In 2015, 40 longwall mines provided nearly 60% of the US coal production from underground mining methods. This represents a substantial yet gradual increase from just under 50% over the last 5 years. As a result of this increased production share, the percentage of ground-fall-related fatalities in longwall mines has also increased when compared to all US underground coal mines. Additionally, about 80% of ground-fall-related fatalities have occurred in areas where the roof was supported. In an attempt to better understand the status quo of current US longwall support practices, a sample of 25 longwall mines were visited representing nearly 50% of the currently active longwall mines representing all of the major US longwall-producing regions. The resulting data was obtained from a wide variety of overburden depths, geologic conditions, mining heights, ground conditions, support practices, and gateroad configurations. The data collected is reported using both qualitative and quantitative methods. Results from the research update previous efforts in classifying mining accidents and injuries as well as current support practices presented by this author at the 2017 Society for Mining, Metallurgy, & Exploration Annual Meeting. This data provides a necessary background for future research aimed at further reduction of ground fall accidents and injuries.

Prologue Antoine Marc Gaudin (Fig. 1) was truly a giant in the field of mineral processing, and his shadow is still cast long on our profession. "Tony," as his students affectionately called him (but never to his face), came to the United States in 1917 and enrolled at Columbia University where he studied under Professor Arthur F. Taggart. Later, as a lecturer, he wrote his classic comminution paper (Gaudin, 1926). This important work led to his appointment as an associate professor at The University of Utah, where he conducted highly original work on flotation fundamentals that is still widely quoted today (Gaudin et al., 1928-30). In 1929, he was appointed Research Professor of Ore Dressing at the Montana School of Mines in Butte. Shortly thereafter, he published his first book, Flotation (Gaudin, 1932). Because Gaudin could so quickly cut through the fog to get to the essence of a problem, this is still a valuable reference book. It is a valued part of my personal library, and I consult it frequently. Over the next decade, he conducted an outstanding graduate research program at Butte, but, more importantly, he honed his undergraduate lectures and produced the century's outstanding text in the field, Elements of Mineral Dressing (Gaudin, 1939). The rapid acceleration and sweeping consequences of what we have all come to characterize as "the ecology movement" has marked a period of serious trial and challenge for the mining industry. It has blossomed into a major factor in our daily business and added a significant new dimension to the problems we must meet and overcome as businessmen. It has become an important new consideration at a time when we must continue to cope with our traditional problems such as rising costs, competition at home and abroad, and the always vital necessity to continually develop new and better technology to produce more minerals more efficiently and more economically. The body of law embracing environmental quality control grows each day, becomes more complex and offers more contradictions. And there is little relief in sight. The requirement to comply with sound environmental regulations -- or challenge unrealistic legislation -- has placed a major burden on the private sector. The economic significance of enacted and proposed environmental regulation is pressing management in the mining industry to some hard decisions -- basic day-to-day business decisions and decisions which acknowledge the undoubted long-term effects of the new laws.

During the past three years the New York Trap Rock Corporation has been restricting blasting operations to days when favorable atmospheric conditions prevailed. By favorable atmospheric conditions is meant the absence of temperature inversions or isothermals in the lower atmosphere or under 6,000 feet altitude. Strong wind and wind shear can also cause conditions unfavorable for blasting. As a result of this practice, there has been a marked decrease in the number of blasting complaints received. The New York Trap Rock Corporation operates four stone quarries on or near the Hudson River within 60 miles of New York City. The Company supplies approximately 7,080,000 tons of high grade, crushed and graded aggregate, rip rap and by-products to the New Pork City area annually, This stone is carried to the market by a fleet of company owned deck &cows which are moved by tugs of a subsidiary towing company. Stone from two of the quarries is diabase: and, from the remaining two, dolomite.

The Moon Creek Reclamation Project provides a case study in the development of creative cleanup solutions for an abandoned lead and zinc mine and mill site located in northern Idaho. Innovative design features include construction of a 88,000 cubic yard combined waste containment facility on soft in-situ tailings, water-balance cap, limestone gravel drains, a geocell mattress for stability, and a below-grade scour protection berm. The stream, including a wetlands buffer, will be relocated within an existing road alignment and rehabilitated to provide trout habitat. These elements allow for the integration of reclamation and stabilization measures into an effective site design.

The eastern U.S. contains vast reserves of thin seam coal deposits, particularly in the Appalachian mountain region. These typical 355 to 710 mm thick reserves are difficult or uneconomical to recover with present technology. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is developing technology that would allow nearly 100% recovery of thin seams in these mountaintop regions. This paper details the research that has been conducted on these new techniques and presents results of testing on a cross-ridge full-scale physical model.

Activities in offshore mineral exploration In Australia are increasing almost daily, at such a rate that this report will rapidly become out of date. At the time of writing, February 1967, there were no commercial discoveries of offshore minerals reported in Australia, although there has been definite encouragement in many fields. While this initial encouragement has not revealed any commercial mineral deposits offshore hopes are running high in Australia for success in 1967. Why should mineral deposits be expected offshore in Australia in the first place? The reasons are many. The minerals to be discovered also are many. The reasons are based on the history of alluvial and beach mining activities in Australia's past and at the present time, and on the physical environment of the vast Continental Shelf which surrounds the continent. A brief examination of the two primary features which are necessary before offshore mineral exploration can be contemplated should be, undertaken. Two favourable environments are necessary; firstly a Continental- Shelf to form a physical environment for the accumulation of the mineral deposits, and secondly a favourable political-legal environment to give the exploration companies adequate protection during exploration, and suitable long term arrangements for the exploitation of the deposits after discoveries have been made. A proactive design and construct approach was used to remediate the Warm Springs Ponds Complex near Anaconda, Montana under "Superfund". The pond complex is used for treatment/settlement of heavy metals and is a repository for 19,000,000 cubic yards of tailings, precipitates and associated sediments. Remediation has resulted in treatment/settling capacity for flows up to the 100-year flood (3,300 cfs); expansion from 5 to 11 ponds in series requiring 12.5 miles of new or improved embankments with associated hydraulic structures; flood protection for the 0.5 Probable Maximum -Flood (PMF) (70,000 cfs); and closure of exposed tailings along with aquatic and terrestrial habitat enhancement.

Newmont has delineated a 600,000+ ounce gold reserve in the Cargo Muchacho Mountains. This is a desert range underlain by Proterozoic(?) Tumco Formation (gneiss) intruded by Jurassic granitic plutons, and cut by low angle shears of the late Cretaceous Chocolate Mountain Thrust event. Gold, associated with pyrite, quartz veinlets, and propylitic alteration, is emplaced along low angle shears. The mineralizing system, enriched in tungsten, copper, zinc and arsenic, was active during Eocene time. Gold reserves are found in eleven areas as moderate to high tenor deposits that may be mined by open pit and underground techniques. Eastmaque Gold Mines Ltd. is developing the deposit.

Surface force measurements based on atomic force microscopy (AFM) are used to describe the wettability of surfaces, specifically kaolinite basal plane surfaces at a high resolution. The kaolinite particles (~500 nm) were ordered with either the silica tetrahedral face exposed or the alumina octahedral face exposed, and surface force measurements were made between a hydrophobic diamond-like-carbon (DLC) tip and the kaolinite faces at pH 4, which is around the isoelectric point of the DLC tip. Under these conditions, the effect of electrostatic interaction should be eliminated and only van der Waals interactions and hydrophobic-hydrophobic interactions are expected to contribute to the surface force. The wettabilities of the surfaces were determined from the magnitude of the surface force. Wettabilities of the kaolinite basal planes thus determined were compared with the corresponding wettabilities of talc and mica surfaces, which are well-known to be naturally hydrophobic, and hydrophilic surfaces, respectively. The results reveal that the silica tetrahedral face of kaolinte has a modest level of hydrophobicity, which may be due to the lack of hydrogen bonding sites. In contrast, the alumina octahedral face showed no hydrophobicity, since a layer of surface hydroxyl groups is present at the alumina face, resulting in a relatively strong interaction between this surface and water molecules. It is expected that, with a better understanding of the surface properties of kaolinite, further improvements in flotation separations and dewatering may be achieved.

In the early 1960's the feasibility of mathematical modeling was demonstrated in Northern Rhodesia and southwestern United States, where techniques were developed to use these models in a new approach to aid engineers in the estimation of ore reserves, mine designs, and financial evaluations. These rudimentary models closely followed the manual methods, producing ore reserves and production schedule estimates that were as accurate as the manual methods, yet were many times faster. Mines evaluated and designed using these new tools gradually came into operation during the 1970's and entered the phase at which production scheduling and ore-grade control became day-to-day problems. Management expected the number of operational engineers to be small because small planning engineering staffs had produced the original designs and operated the smaller high-grade pits. Unfortunately, the tools needed by the mine engineer to perform short-term production scheduling and ore-grade control were labor intensive; they had not yet been generally computerized. Several attempts to use the original or exploration model for these two functions were futile. While an exploration model based on data from exploration work proved sufficiently precise for overall mine design and long-term production scheduling, the model lacked the precision required for short-term scheduling and grade control.

The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed an active proximity warning system called hazardous area signaling and ranging device (HASARD) for warning workers as they approach known dangerous areas around heavy mining equipment and other dangerous work zones. HASARD is composed of a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter generates a 60-kHz magnetic field using one or more wire loop antennas. Each antenna is adjusted to establish a magnetic field pattern for each hazardous area. The receiver, which is worn by the worker, is a magnetic field strength meter. The received signal is compared against preset levels that are calibrated to identify levels of danger. The receiver outputs can include visual, audible and vibratory indicators, and it can also be made to disable machine functions. HASARD was field tested on a Joy 12 continuous miner, a Komatsu 210 M Haulpak and on a high wall launch vehicle. Slight modifications were made for each application. HASARD provided warnings as designed, and it proved to be rugged enough to withstand the harshest of production environments.

Golder Moffitt and Associates (GMA)", were commissioned to reassess a large metallic low grade orebody. One of the aims of the study was to estimate recoverable reserves. Recoverable reserves are here defined as ore reserves for a specific mining block size. The mining block is that block on which the decision that the material is ore or waste is made. Recoverable reserves take into consideration mining methods. New methods for solving this type of problem were recently developed in Geostatistics and so for this reason GMA called for the technical assistance of the Centre de Geostatistique (C.G). The complete estimation was done using the geostatistical techniques and programs of the C.G together with some of the programs of GMA. As the mine was in production at the time the study commenced it was-possible to make frequent checks on the estimated values using blast-hole data. The ore reserves were also estimated using the more conventional interpolation method of inverse square of distance weighting.

For the past few years, the Cyprus Bagdad Copper Company began experiencing a significant "ore-dilution" problem from its low grade open- pit copper mine located at Bagdad, Arizona. To pinpoint the causes of this dilution, a study was initiated to investigate as well as to improve in-pit ore-waste selection-procedures using conditionally simulated ore-bodies. Prior to the actual use of conditional simulation; a comparison of different estimation methods for a mined-out area in the pit was performed. Specifically, kriging estimates were compared against the original estimates of the company which were based on the polygonal approach. The results of this comparison clearly identified part of the so- called "ore-dilution" problem, which was the initial over-estimation of average ore grades from blast rounds, using the polygonal approach. The results from the use of conditionally simulated orebodies demonstrated that the "ore-dilution" problem can be reduced by more than half if in-pit ore- waste selection is based on the kriged estimates rather than the polygonal estimates. This simulation study also showed that the current use of the polygonal approach has the effect of shipping a larger tonnage of lower grade material to the mill.

The production sequence optimization of open pit mine is a procedure that reflects the exploitation conditions over life of mine. These conditions are determined by the geological characteristics of the deposit, requirements of the mining and processing technologies and economic parameters of the exploitation. From a technological point of view the production sequence optimization deals with two aspects - spatial and time. Each of them plays a tremendously important role in searching for the optimum solution of the problem. This paper treats the time aspect of the production sequence optimization. This aspect is revealed in the context of the problem of the working zone formation of the open pit mine in time. The problem formulation places an accent on the determination of the theoretically possible time distribution of the waste and ore quantities of each bench of the open pit mine. A mathematical solution to the problem has been developed based on combinatorial analysis. The solution provides a multi-variant investigation of the production sequencing with the use of an optimization model developed as a linear programming formulation. The model objective function uses the Net Present Value as a criterion for assessing the effectiveness of production sequencing. A case study is provided for the conditions of Assarel copper open pit mine (Bulgaria) to illustrate the applicability of the approach. The results obtained reveal the complex nature of the variation of the Net Present Value as a function of the mining factor.

I'm glad this meeting is being held in New York. First, because the city is close to my home in New Jersey, only 35 minutes from Times Square ..... if I were to come to Times Square between two and three in the morning. Otherwise it takes two hours. But even more important is the fact that all of you good people from around the country and around the world will enjoy the unique experience of that warm friendly atmosphere in the greater metropolitan area, something that you won't see any place else on the face of the earth. Seriously, the greater metropolitan area has been a large part of my industrial, cultural and spiritual experience. There are many aspects of it which I find disagreeable but on net I would rather live in this area, at least for the time being, than any other area of the United States. As a consultant I find contact with financial institutions, corporate headquarters, information sources and a great many production and research facilities a valuable asset to my activity.

The production and consumption of industrial minerals in the United States traditionally have played important roles in mining and in the supply of the bulk of basic raw materials to the economy. This diverse group of minerals extracted and consumed by a variety of industries accounts, on a weight and volume basis, for most mineral-based products consumed in our economy. Industrial minerals form the bulk of the basic raw-materials feedstock for most of the construction, agricultural, and inorganic-chemical-manufacturing sectors, and a good portion of the transportation, manufacturing, organic chemical, and service sectors of the U.S. economy. In this presentation, I discuss current estimates of the amount and value of industrial minerals mined compared with all mining in 1997. I then present a summary of 1997 production of industrial minerals by several end-use industries. This is followed by a historical perspective of the consumption of industrial minerals as a subset of all basic materials, with special emphasis on the aggregates industry. The presentation concludes with a look at the geographic distribution of industrial mineral operations in the United States and some thoughts about the future.

The ever-increasing demand for steel and the subsequent depletion of high-grade ores requires the massive utilization of low-grade iron ores. In the present study, an iron ore slime sample containing 56.1% Fe was investigated using physical beneficiation, carbothermal reduction, and a microwave-assisted process; however, physical beneficiation and microwave exposure were found to be inefficient as they yielded lower iron recovery. Using coconut shell as an alternative reductant was found to be promising and does not lead to the formation of higher iron oxides, such as fayalite and wustite phases. The microwave-assisted carbothermal reduction was found at par with conventional reduction, saving time and heating. The optimum magnetic concentrate obtained in both carbothermal reduction routes (microwave and muffle furnace: Fe grade, Fe recovery, and yield of 64.3, 97, and 84%, and 67, 99, and 83%, respectively) are suitable for alternative iron-making or blast furnace units.

With the recent demand for increased coal production there has been a corresponding increase in the horsepower of the shearing machines. The resultant increase in the machine haulage pull has heightened the incident of haulage chain breakage resulting in machine downtime, but more seriously the danger to face personnel. This paper discusses the application of chainless haulage to longwall mining and describes the systems currently available.

Over the last decade new constraints have emerged in the metallurgical industry which challenge the very basis of design and construction of smelters and refineries. The hackneyed designs of the past will not now serve the revised objectives of: - minimal cost of ownership - improved productivity - reduced energy consumption - greater flexibility in feed or product - minimized recycle loops and by-products - more stringent environmental control The impact of these constraints has been channeled constructively into process intensification - exemplified at the large scale by the introduction of flash smelting technology and at the smaller scale by the application of rotary process vessels and converters for augmented heat and mass transfer. The design of successful process plants depends on the understanding of the unit operations and their interactions which is the discipline of systems engineering. With the advent of increased process intensification the importance of a systems approach to process design and implementation becomes paramount. This paper describes the systems approach with specific reference to medium scale projects in the primary and secondary metallurgical industry.
