It is a distinct privilege to have the opportunity of addressing this group today. Although I, myself, am not a mining engineer, I have always had profound admiration and respect for those of you who each day live and work according to the tenets of Murphy's Law. Murphy, as some of you may know, was an Irish philosopher whose sole contribution to his field was the observation, "In the mining industry, if anything can possibly go wrong, it will!" You have heard this afternoon a variety of papers, touching on or describing in some detail imminent problems which presently face the coal industry. Many of these problems show no signs of diminishing. Actually, there is good reason to believe that they will intensify as governing bodies pass additional enabling legislation and regulatory agencies adopt more stringent "Rules and Regulations". In many cases, these groups are seemingly oblivious or indifferent to either cost factors or technical problems involved in achieving the desired goals.

The ever increasing costs of labor and supplies have made it imperative that operators of open pits look for some way in which to cope with these increases. One of the most logical ways to increase the efficiency of an operation is by the introduction of larger haulage equipment, as generally haulage costs are the greater portion of the over all expenses. These larger haulage units require larger shovel units. In the late 1930's and the early 1940's large mining, quarrying and heavy construction operations had more or less standardized on the 4 to 6 cubic yard shovels. During this same period the haulage units were generally 22 to 27 tons. Some ten years ago 9 - 13 cubic yard shovels along with plus 50 ton haulage units were introduced by manufacturers in an effort to enable operators to decrease costs.

Ore crushing facilities at the Phelps Dodge Morenci Reduction Works became operational in January of 1942. This plant, with a capacity of 25,000 tons per day, was part of a project started some five years earlier with development of the Morenci Open Pit Copper Mine. In the following year, World War II's heavy copper demands prompted an 80% expansion in concentrating capacity to 45,000 tons per day resulting in a doubling of the secondary crushing plant. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, grinding capacity was again expanded to the present 60,000 TPD. This time the then 20 year old crushing plant was obliged to meet a 20% increase in production demand with no additional equipment. The ore, principally a medium hard monzonite porphyry, is dumped from 40 yard rail cars into an ore pocket over the primary crusher at a rate of approximately one car per minute. The primary crushing flowsheet, Figure 1, has remained essentially unchanged over the years. Equipment consists of a 40 by 16 foot grizzly set on a 40° incline and having 6" openings, a 60" gyratory crusher nomin¬ally set at 62" + 1" on the closed side and two 72" by 38' panfeeders which load crushed ore and grizzly undersize at a rate of 4,000 tons per hour onto a twin 54" belt conveyor system for delivery to the coarse ore bin. Ore is distributed across the bin by two single side discharge tripper cars. Bin capacity is extremely limited at 23,000 tons of which only 12,000 is available or "live".

The U1h Shaft Project is a design/build subcontract to construct one 6.1 meter(m) (20 feet [ft.]) finished diameter shaft to a depth of 321.6 meters (m) (1055 ft.) at the Nevada Test Site (NTS). Atkinson Construction was subcontracted by Bechtel Nevada(BN) to construct the U1h Shaft for the Department of Energy (DOE). The project consists of furnishing and installing the sinking plant, construction of the 321.6 m(1055 ft.) of concrete lined shaft, development of a shaft station at a depth of 297.5 m(976 ft.), and construction of a loading pocket at the station. The outfitting of the shaft and installation of a new hoist may be incorporated into the project at a later date. This paper will describe the design phase, the excavation and lining operation, shaft station construction and the contractual challenges encountered on this project.

Introduction Although autogenous grinding applications date back to the early years of mineral processing when tumbling-type mills were first used, there has been a renewed interest in this type of grinding over the past few decades. A review of the historical aspects of autogenous grinding is provided which follows the development of the various types of mills and processes. Wet and dry grinding operations using either autogenous or semiautogenous mills, including the Aerofall mill, are described. Em¬phasis has been placed on the test work required to evaluate the feasibility of using autogenous or semiautogenous grinding for a spe¬cific application. The factors which must be considered to establish the appropriate design criteria for these types of grinding circuits are discussed in detail. Successful application of these grinding circuits results from a thorough test program, a careful analysis of the test results, and a practical engineering approach to the design of the process flowsheet and milling equipment. Certain pebble milling applications, where the pebbles consist of the ore or rock itself, can be classified as autogenous pebble mill grinding, or better known as ore-pebble mill grinding. In the generic sense, pebble milling includes those grinding operations using a tum¬bling mill in which the grinding media consists of various types of pebbles, either ore or other pebbles, instead of metal balls. Conse¬quently, this subject is covered separately in Chapter 5, Pebble Mills. Operating data from many of the installations located throughout the world are included in this chapter. Our appreciation is extended to those companies who contributed this important information. History of Autogenous Grinding F. C. BOND Autogenous grinding, the grinding of ore by itself rather than by special metallic or nonmetallic grinding bodies distinct from the ore, has an old and honorable place in the art of mineral processing. It antedates the use of the rod mill and is only a few years younger than the development of the continuously fed rotating tumbling mill in which it is accomplished. Its history71, 72 is inextricably bound up with that of gold mining. Every important early development of autogenous grinding took place on ores of gold, except in one case of silver ore. In common with many other features of modern mineral processing, autogenous grinding would have been greatly retarded if the winning of gold had been so small a part of mining in the past as it is today. Gold unlocked the secrets of rock-on-rock grinding. In years past gold ores were crushed in stamp batteries and then flowed over copper plates covered with mercury which amalgamated the gold. The McArthur Forrest cyanide process for the dissolution of gold in a dilute alkaline cyanide solution appeared in 1890. With finer grinding it recovered more gold than could be won by amalgama¬tion alone. The first response was to stamp in cyanide solution and finer mesh screens guarding the stamp discharge. However, the fine screens greatly restricted the tonnage stamped, and they wore out rapidly. Rotating tumbling mills70, 73 were the obvious choice to grind the coarse product from stamps. Many of these were Gates tube mills; more than 1,000 of these were sold between 1907 and 1913. They were made in 6, 51h, and 5 ft diam, with lengths of 20 and 22 ft. The 5 x 22-ft size was the most popular. The term tube mill did not refer to the mill shape, but included all tumbling mills using grinding pebbles. The flint or chert rocks found along the coasts of Denmark and Normandy are probably the most durable and resistant to abrasive and tumbling wear of any on earth. They were much used in the early tube mills. The early linings were all silex or Danish flint blocks, cemented into place with portland cement. Local hard stones or cast iron blocks were also used later. The cast iron liners carried lifters and were not bolted to the shell, but were held in a tight circle against it by steel wedges hammered home between them. The first ribbed metal liners designed to hold grinding pebbles pounded into them by the mill action were developed at El Oro, Mexico, about 1905. These and the Forbes, Komata, and Tonopah types, as well as the Osborne type developed in South Africa within about five years, were very successful in reducing liner wear. They sometimes lasted two years or more, and equalled or exceeded the life of silex lining at a lower cost. Some of the types were patented. The pioneer name recorded in the history of autogenous grinding is that of Kenneth L. Graham. In 1907 at the Geldenhuis Deep Ltd. mine near Johannesburg, he ran a comparative test on two tube mills. One mill used pieces of the common gold ore, or banket, and the other used the customary imported Danish pebbles as grinding media. He published the first account of autogenous grinding.'' In a test lasting 81 days the ore pebbles showed a definite saving over the Danish pebbles. Graham's historic paper also describes the invention of B. Chew of the Crown Deep Mines of the first trammel to be attached to a grinding mill discharge. The first known account of autogenous grind¬ing printed outside of South Africa was the description of the Graham test in Mining and Scientific Press's The use of grate- vs. overflow¬discharge was also described at this time." The news of this successful test appears to have had immediate effect, for by the end of 1908 the number of tube mills on the Rand had increased from 72 to 120.76 Presumably, most of these mills were now using autogenous grinding. The ore was principally a hard conglomerate of quartz peb¬bles cemented by silica, and was eminently suitable for use as a grind¬ing media. It is unfortunate that in South Africa the new autogenous process continued to be called by its old name of pebble milling, since the name does not distinguish between grinding with ore and grinding with extraneous pebbles. For increased clarity the former is called rock pebble milling. The first historical stage in the development was what is now designated as secondary autogenous grinding, or rock pebble milling. It consists of grinding a feed all passing 'A in. or finer with ore pebbles about 2 to 4 in. in diameter. The next stage to develop was that now called intermediate autogenous grinding, where larger amounts of larger pebbles about 5 in. in size were used to grind ore which had been crushed to about rod mill feed size or somewhat finer. It was developed on the Rand and in other places where coarse stamp screens were used to increase mill tonnage. In many cases the early secondary and intermediate autogenous mills have now been replaced by conventional ball mills and rod mill-ball mill circuits, with the object of further increasing grinding capacity. The third stage to develop is designated as wet primary autogenous grinding, in which run-of-mine ore or a primary crusher product is all fed to the autogenous mill together. It developed many years later indepen¬dently in the United States and in South Africa. The fourth and most recent stage is that of dry primary autogenous grinding, which developed in the United States and Canada. All four stages originated in gold mining. The first use of commercial autogenous grinding outside of the Rand apparently took place five years later in 1912 at the Santa Gertrudis gold mine at Pachuca, 55 miles northeast of Mexico City. A discussion of fillers would not be complete without allotting adequate time to that unique and different mineral material, diatomaceous silica. Historical references to its use challenge the aesthetic aspect of man's curiosity; whereas modern scientific tools have provided a dimension of measurement that has motivated many of its more recent applications. A brief review of what is already known is in order. The diatom is a unicellular, plant-like, microscopic organism, related to the algae1. Its natural function appears to be that of a food for other marine or lacustrine organisms, The diatom's "claim to fame" from an industrial viewpoint is dependent on the fact that it secretes an opaline siliceous skeleton that must survive, chemically and structurally, the geologic processes that caused its formation in the first place; its subsequent demise, burial, consolidation, and alteration; and finally, its ultimate exploitation by man--in somewhat that order. In addition to its siliceous nature, the skeletal structure of the diatom possesses a variety of shapes, patterns, and sizes that have not only been the intrigue of microscopists for decades, but have served to set diatomite apart as an industrial mineral; and have reserved for it applications that cannot be satisfied by any other material. Its chemical inertness, its intricate structure, and its intrinsic hardness-coupled with fineness and friability-- are generally known and have accounted for its application in a wide range of filtration and filler uses. The increasing use of the electron microscope has considerably expanded our knowledge of heretofore unseen secondary and tertiary structure of submicron dimension in the diatom valve. The development of electro-sensing methods of particle size measurement which seem to supersede sedimentation and microscopic techniques has portrayed size distribution in a more realistic light. Interest in the surface chemistry of these silica structures has further strengthened our understanding for certain uses. Thus, new tools and ideas have made possible the introduction of diatomite into such sophisticated technologies as that of chromatographic supports, its improved utility in paint applications for the control of gloss and sheen, and its usefulness in the entirely new concept of "Dry Acid Concentrates." Each of these applications has been discussed elsewhere before people particularly interested in analytical chemistry, in paint, and in liquid handling, respectively, where the diatom has been a means to an end. The emphasis here, before the mining fraternity, however is on diatomite as a raw material with reference to the uses mentioned above. It is therefore toward an awareness and understanding of diatomite properties pertinent to these newer filler applications that this paper is directed.

As production of ground limestone increased our Company found it had an enviromental problem with limestone dust from our hammer mills. With the quarry and processing plant situated within 1 klm of a small township of 5000 people dust collection became essential. Regulations under the Clean Air Act 1972 also had to be complied with. Prior to this any demand for lime flour had been met by the use of a small drier and ball mill. Both expensive to operate. Dust emitting from the mills would amount to over 4000 tonnes per year. The cost savings were obvious. We had a better product which was essentially a by-product. Faced with a surplus of a very useful, but difficult product to handle we considered the possibility of disposing of it on the agricultural market.

All of Canada's older uranium mining areas have been intensively prospected and known outcrops have been repeatedly examined. The only ground in these areas which has not been explored is that which is covered by water or other overburden. The discovery of new mines in these areas will, in the author's opinion, depend on the development of new geophysical or geochemical tools capable of locating uranium deposits which are-buried beneath tens to hundred of feet of overburden. Such tools would be extremely useful in Saskatchewan's Cluff Lake and Wollaston Lake areas. Uranium has recently been discovered in significant quantities in these regions but exploration is made extremely difficult and expensive by an almost uniform overburden cover. The author's experience has been confined to Canada but apparently a subsurface uranium prospecting method could be widely exployed in the western United States and Australia as well. Radon-222 measurements have been used for more than a decade on practically a worldwide basis in an attempt to obtain a useful method for subsurface uranium prospecting. It is well known that ha-222 produced by buried uranium deposits can diffuse through an overburden cover so that it can sometimes be detected at surface. An advantage of this method of prospecting is that Rn-222 can be detected with a simple scintillation, ionization or semiconductor detector. One of the essential weaknesses of the method is that the mean diffusion path length of Rn-222 is limited by its very short (3.8 days) half life. For a deeply buried deposit, vitually all of the Rn-222 atoms will decay before reaching surface and, therefore, such deposits cannot be expected to produce a detectable radon anomaly. Thus, except in unusual cases where groundwater or ground air flow assists the movement of radon towards surface, the depth of exploration is probably limited to ten or twenty feet of overburden cover. The high solubility of Rn-222 in water is also a source of difficulty. In an area where overburden covers bedrock with water saturation of the lower overburden levels, the radon will simply dissolve in the groundwater, and soil gas readings at surface will indicate falsely low

The dissolution behavior of silver in ammoniacal solutions with cupric ammine as an oxidant has been investigated using a rotating disc electrode. The rates of dissolution of silver were determined by an electrochemical means as well as a direct measurement of silver ions reported in the bulk solution as a function of time. The variables investigated included stirring speed, temperature, concentration of lixiviants, and pH of the solutions. The rate of dissolution under the conditions studied' was found to be controlled by an electrochemical reaction at the liquid/ solid interface with an apparent activation energy of 48.07 kJ /mole. The rate was found to be a half order with respect to the, concentration of cupric tetra-ammine, Cu(NH3)l+.; The results were explained in terms of a mixed' potential theory.

About 1/3 of the world's supply of phosphate rock is produced in a relatively small area of the Florida peninsula east of Tampa. Until this past year, a circle with a radius of about 25 miles and centered on Bartow would encompass the major producing areas. During the past year producing areas have opened in North Florida which promise to vie with the Polk-Hillsborough County area in terms of proven reserves. In addition, new phosphate production is planned for counties to the south and west of the present fields. From the existing production areas, however, more than 19 million long tons of phosphate were mined in 1965. As mining engineers most of you probably are familiar with the methods of mining and beneficiating the pebble phosphate rock. You thus recognize that, although some water quality problems may arise from these processes, there is no potential air pollution problem. To make an economically useful product, however, further processing must take place. It is from this additional processing that potentially damaging materials may be discharged to the atmosphere.

reserves are exploring to increase them.. Uranium exploration projects are known to be active or planned also in Guayana, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Bolivia, and Uruguay in South America; in the UAR, Nigeria, Angola, Mozambique, Malawi, Kenya, and Somali in Africa; and in Greece, Iran, Pakistan., Indonesia, and New Zealand. The above list, to which several might be added makes a total of at least 43 nations actively interested in exploration for nuclear raw materials. As we consider the distribution of the world's uranium resources, it is interesting to note that roughly one third of the total occurs in deposits that are economically dependant upon another product. The very large reserves of South Africa could not be produced for uranium alone, but gold has carried a sufficient part of the total cost that uranium can be recovered profitably. Approximately 40 percent of the US reserves, or 120,000 tons, are estimated as by-product recovery from porphyry copper and phosphate operations, but these reserves are not presently in production. The remaining two thirds of the world's uranium reserves have been sought, developed, and produced primarily for their uranium content. Those deposits are estimated to contain 613,000 tons of uranium oxide recoverable at less than $10 per pound. Nearly half of that uranium occurs in unmetamorphosed sandstone hosts, mostly of late Phanerozoic age--the Colorado Plateau type. About 30 percent is contained in the quartz pebble conglomerates of southern Ontario, Canada, and 20 percent is in magmatic-related deposits--veins, contact deposits, mineralized breccias, etc.

It is not my intention in this paper to review recent developments in the mineral processing industry which might fall under the above heading, but to refer to some of the research that I have done over the past 25 years or so. To begin with then, my student days at the Camborne School of Mines, the year 1952. Equipment from the last century was still in everyday use at the local tin mines. At South Crofty Ltd a steam beam engine 100 years old was pumping mine water from 2000 feet, the motive force being conveyed from surface to the pump at the bottom of the mine by a 14 inch square pitch pine rod joined with forged iron straps, steam winders were still in use, and in the mills, stamps ground the ore, and the cassiterite was recovered by equipment with exotic names like "buddies, kievs, and round frames." And to equip us students for the brave new world, we included in our practical mineral dressing a day's test programme with a Californian stamp -- experience that I am still waiting to put to good use!

Reflections on over ten years experience handling bituminous coal from railroad cars to ground storage and lake vessels. The arrangement of the facilities is described but the basic theme of the discussion is the experience gained and lessons learned from facility operation. The Great Lakes provide the maritime environment for the economical transport of vast quantities of raw materials from their source in the Upper Lakes (the Mesabi Range, for instance) to Lower Lake Ports. Lake Erie, because of its proximity to the steel centers , blossomed with the great ports that now line its southern shore - Toledo, Sandusky, Lorain, Cleveland, Huron, Ashtabula, Conneaut and Erie.

Arizona, in 1966, has continued to be the site of an extensive and intensive search for metallic mineral deposits. Over fifty separate entities--companies and individuals--have been actively engaged in mineral exploration programs, both large and small, in the Basin-and-Range portion of the State. Certainly, copper has been primarily responsible for the major efforts, although associated gold, silver, and molybdenum mineralization also has been important in the economic evaluation of potential copper deposits. It is not difficult to explain why the Basin-Range portion of Arizona is receiving such attention. Part of the story, undoubtedly familiar to most, can be illustrated by reference to three graphical presentations. For example, Figure 1 shows Arizona's annual copper production for the period 1955-1965, inclusive, and it demonstrates that new records of production have been accomplished in each of the past 6 years and in 9 of the last 11 years.

There are large areas on all of the continents with environments which are favorable for deposits of zinc and lead of Mississippi Valley type. In the developed countries, these environments have for the most part been quite thoroughly explored for the near surface deposits, and it will be necessary to direct more effort to the search for deeper buried deposits from which much of our future production must come. The difficulties of exploration for deep ore of this type are many and formidable, but the area of permissive environments beneath deep cover is many times as great as the area of the known near surface ore districts. It is a reasonable assumption, therefore, that numerous deposits wait for discovery and development. The finding cost, however, is certain to increase, and it is essential that concepts and techniques of exploration be improved if we are to sustain a reasonably strong productive capability into the 21st century. Exploration for deeply buried deposits requires at the outset relatively large areas of favorable geologic environment. The favorable horizons must be within economic limits of depth for the exploration as well as for the mining techniques which are currently available; and there must be some condition, design or strategy which will assure the explorer a reasonable chance of obtaining maximum benefit from discoveries which he may make.

The Ontario Division of The International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited, operates five underground mines and one open pit on the rim of the Sudbury Basin located in the Province of Ontario, 230 miles northwest of Toronto. Four of the mines, Frood-Stobie, Creighton, Murray and Garson, lie on the South range of the Basin within a 10-mile radius of the City of Sudbury; the fifth mine, Levack, is on the North range, about 30 miles northwest of the city. The ores are mined primarily for nickel and copper, the principal minerals being pentlandite and chalcopyrite. Other elements recovered from the ores in varying quantities are platinum, palladium, ruthenium, iridium, rhodium, cobalt, selenium, tellurium, iron, sulphur, gold and silver. In 1962, the total underground ore production was over 10,800,000 tons which was mined mainly by blasthole and caving methods with the remainder by cut-and-fill, square set, and undercut-and-fill techniques.

Pinson Mining Company was formed to develop a gold orebody located in northern Nevada near Winnemucca. A feasibility study was undertaken in 1979 by a consortium of three Toronto-based mining companies and a Reno-based exploration company. The study indicated a viable project with gold priced above $225 per ounce. A project manager, and mine and mill superintendents, were hired in late 1979 to expedite the development of a 1000 ton per day mine-mill complex. Plant design engineering was contracted with Industrial Design Corporation in Salt Lake City. Three experienced plant metallurgists representing Pinson were stationed in Salt Lake to guide the work of Industrial Design. Among the many design criteria spelled out by Pinson, foremost were bringing the mill on line as quickly as possible at minimum capital cost. Fourteen months after the beginning of design engineering, the completed Pinson mill became operational. Total capital cost, including mine development, was $18 million. The Pinson project has proved to be far more than viable; the entire capital cost will be recovered within 18 months of the mill start-up.

Some of the practices of the mining industry that may place an undesirable stress on the groundwater environment are coming under increasing scrutiny from legislators and regulatory agencies. Among these practices are mine dewatering, the use of tailings ponds, land rehabilitation, and technological innovations such as in situ leaching of waste clumps and ore deposits. Pernichele, noting that 24 states have enacted legislation controlling to varying degrees the environmental effects of mining, has emphasized the importance of assessing the potential for damage to groundwater when evaluating, planning, and designing mining projects. 1 Illinois has enacted legislation requiring anyone opening, operating or abandoning a mine site to obtain a permit from the Illinois EPA. The law is one of the first to require regular monitoring and reporting to a control agency. Legislation has also been recently enacted at the national level that will have a significant impact on the mining industry; e. g., the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 (Public Law 92-500). The stated objective of this Act is to restore and maintain the chemical, physical and biological integrity of the nation's waters. Specifically, according to Sec. 102(a), the Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is required to prepare or develop comprehensive programs for preventing, reducing or eliminating the pollution of the navigable waters and groundwaters and improving the sanitary condition of surface and underground waters. The definition of the terms "pollution" and "pollutant" is of particular significance to those who must comply with PL 92-500. The definitions are quite broad and include most of the adverse water quality effects of man's activities. As defined in Sec. 502(19), "pollution means the man-made or man-induced alteration of the chemical, physical, biological and radiological integrity of water." Within the Act, the list of pollutants includes dredged spoil, solid waste, incineration residue, chemical wastes, radioaetive materials, heat, wrecked or discarded equipment, rock, sand, cellar dirt, and industrial waste discharged into water.

The Bureau of Mines is concerned with all the approximately 60 industrial minerals, although its research program currently is focused on 10 of them--bauxite, chromite, clay, manganese, phosphate, potash, refractories, sulfur, titanium, and zirconium. To alleviate reliance on imported materials, particular attention is directed to those minerals having a potential for production from domestic resources. Another important consideration is environmental problems associated with the production of industrial minerals, principally in mining and mineral processing operations, The Bureau also is looking at the opportunities to substitute more abundant minerals for scarce raw materials such as rutile, fluorspar, and bauxite. In its overall minerals surveillance, the Bureau's mining and metallurgical research and development are coordinated with its minerals information activities from which reviews, projections, and forecasts identify the potential for critical disruptions and short supply situations.

The U.S. Geological Survey has developed mathematical-modeling techniques to assess potential impacts on the hydrologic system resulting from mining of coal and oil shale in northwestern Colorado. Potential impacts of oil-shale mining on ground-water hydrology have been simulated using a quasi-three- dimensional finite-difference model. The model has been used to simulate hypothetical mine-dewatering operations at two proposed oil-shale mines. Dissolved-solids distribution and solute transport were simulated with a three- dimensional finite-difference model that was used to evaluate the effects of flooding in hypothetical abandoned mines. The potential impacts of coal and oil-shale mining on watersheds were investigated using a digital watershed model. This deterministic physical- process model predicts responses of the hydrologic system to modifications resulting from mining in basins having snow as the major source of runoff and recharge. Potential impacts of coal development on surface-water quality were investigated using a river-quality assessment model.
