With the rapidly growing use of hydraulics in mining equipment, maintenance personnel should be familiar with the various components in hydraulic systems. Hydraulic systems do wear out - the fluids they transport are hot and turbulent, the equipment they power often imposes tremendous pressure pulsations and bending stresses, and the working environment is harsh. Therefore, even though hydraulic hoses are made of remarkably trouble-free components, they do need to be replaced periodically. There must be coupling methods that allow hoses to be replaced without disturbing other components. Couplings must also provide a variety of leak-resistant connections between hoses and other components in the hydraulic circuitry. Threaded Connection and Seals Hydraulic coupling thread ends and sealing arrangements are standardized, with many types available. Their outward appearance varies, but coupling configurations are recognizable by examining threads and seals and comparing them to the examples provided here. Iron Pipe Thread There are two kinds of iron pipe threads normally used in mining equipment circuitry - National Pipe Tapered Thread for Fuels (NPTF) and National Pipe Straight Thread Mechanical Joint (NPSM). The NPTF seal is the engagement of the coupling threads, called thread interference. When tightened, the tapered thread of the male fitting binds into that tapered thread of the female fitting to form a relatively leakproof seal (Fig. 1). In the NPSM seal, there is a 30° angle seat machined into the end of the male NPTF fitting. This seat engages with a mating 30° angle cone on the inside of the female fitting. Female NPSM fittings have straight threads, as opposed to the tapered threads of the NPTF fittings. However, most NPTF solid male fittings also have a 30° angle seat enabling them to be used with NPSM female fittings (Fig. 2). JIC and SAE Fittings Joint Industry Conference (JIC) and Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) seals are formed by joining two mating, conical metal surfaces. The coupling threads are used to bring and hold these surfaces together to form a leak-resistant seal. A JIC connection is a solid male threaded end, with a 37° machined male nose, mating with a 37° female flare seat. When connected, the mating surfaces are held together by the threads, but the threads do not form the seal. The female seat is created by flaring a tube end or machining the interior surface of a stem to 37°. A female JIC has a swivel nut, allowing the sealing surfaces to be joined together without twisting a hose or twisting the seats against each other (Fig. 3). JIC couplings are frequently used on low, medium, or high pressure hydraulic circuits on mining equipment and machinery. The SAE connection is similar in appearance and sealing characteristics to the JIC system, except the angle of the machined male nose and female flare seat is 45° (Fig. 4). "O" Ring Fittings Seals for "O" ring fittings are formed by compressing an "O" ring against an exposed machined surface on a mounting block or hydraulic component part. INTRODUCTION The demand for specialty metals in industrial applications is in it's healthiest state since the late 1970'8, and several specific markets are recording record sales. Such metals as gold, silver, zirconim., titanium, beryllium, gallium, germanium, the platinum group, and the lanthanides accounted for sales in excess of $2 billion in 1985 among the end uses covered in this report. Although specialty metals as a group have suffered the effects of recessionary pressures in the past, these metals have proved more resiliant than such large volume metals as copper and nickel. This is due to the unique physical properties they possess which makes the threat of substitution or replacement through technological development uneconomic. The outlook for these specialty metals is optimistic in electronics, catalysts, ceramics, and alloys, and their specialty status results .in a combined average annual growth in demand of 7% through 1990. WHAT MAKES THESE METALS SPECIAL? Such characteristics as electrical conductivity, corrosion resistance, catalytic activity, thermal stability, and optical properties allow the term specialty to be applied to these metals. More importantly, all of these metals possess more than one of these qualities, as shown in Table 1. [ ] These five major functions are important in the end uses for these metals, although the specific applications vary somewhat. Conductivity in term of low or high electrical resistance is of obvious importance to electronics manufacturers. Producers of circuit boards or semiconductors require such metals as gold, palladium, platinum, and gallium due to their low electrical resistivity. However, these producers also require such metals as beryllium in the oxide form for insulation components because of the compound's low electrical conductivity. Although the lanthanides' conductive characteristics are not particularly attractive in electronics, they are of great importance to alloy manufacturers producing permanent magnets for automotive and computer applications. Corrosion and wear resistant properties are extremely attractive to a number of end-use industries, particularly in view of the estimate by the United States Bureau of Mines that $10 to $50 billion in losses are experienced by U.S. industry due to equipment corrosion and $100 billion due to equipment wear. The strength of high purity titanium and zirconium make these metals the obvious choice for corrosion and wear resistance particularly in the chemical processing industry, where the ability to maintain integrity in corrosive environments is a must. Heat exchangers, nuclear control rods, and a number of parts in jet engines have benefited greatly from the use of these metals. However, such other specialty metals as beryllium, and the lanthanides also improve the wear or corrosion resistance in various products. For example, a beryllium-copper alloy contact maintains it's spring like character, and does not loose this character after repeated use, which could result in the loss of an electrical contact. Lanthanide, in the form of cerium oxide, is commonly employed in alloys used to produce catalytic converter casings for the purpose of reducing damage by corrosive road salt. In some instances, the catalytic activity of several of the specialty metals assists in the economic production of other materials. Variations in designs between belt cleaner systems are so wide that it is impractical to establish a dimensional stan- dard. The number of variables that affect the efficiency of belt cleaners is too great to assume a required number or style of cleaners for broad classifications of bulk solids or typical applications. The amount of carryback remaining on the belt is more dependent upon the characteristics of the bulk solid and the physical parameters of the conveyor system than it is on tonnage of material conveyed. Therefore, a performance-based standard is proposed. Three levels of cleaning performance are proposed: • Level I cleaning is general specified when concerns about carryback are not critical. Cleaning systems normally associated with achieving a Level I performance are single or double cleaner systems with one-piece blades undergoing poor to average maintenance. Frequent cleaning of the carryback that falls from the return run will likely be required. • Level II cleaning is generally specified when carry- back is of concern but does not create a safety or environmental problem. Cleaning systems normally associated with Level I1 performance are multiple cleaner systems with segmented blades undergoing the manufacturer's specified maintenance. Regular but infrequent cleaning of the carryback that falls from the return run will likely be required. • Level III cleaning is generally specified when con- cerns about carryback are critical. Concerns range from safety to environmental to product contamination. Cleaning systems normally associated with achieving a Level 111 performance are multiple cleaner systems in conjunction with at least one low- volume water spray. Scheduled inspection and the manufacturer's specified maintenance would have to be performed to maintain a high level of cleaning performance. Difficult-to-clean bulk materials may require the use of a washbox system with multiple cleaners using a combination of low-volume eater sprays to lubricate the cleaners and high-volume sprays to keep the washbox and discharge piping freely flowing. Further addition of a water and sludge recycling system reduces the amount of water that ends up in the product to a negligible amount. Very infrequent cleaning of the carryback that falls from the return run will be required. PURPOSE The purpose of this proposal is to propose a standard method for specifying belt cleaner systems based on user expectations and equipment performance over time. DEFINITION In bulk solids handling by conveyor belt, carryback is the material that adheres to the belt after the belt discharges its cargo. PROPOSED STANDARD Required Basic Good Practices There are a number of basic design and operating principles that are good practice for the selection, installation, and maintenance of belt cleaning systems on conveyors in order to achieve "standard belt cleaning performance over time. 1. The Belt Cleaning System shall be designed to meet the performance requirements based on the worst operating conditions and worst bulk solids proper- ties that are expected. 2. Each conveyor discharge point shall be designed to readily accept the manufacturer's recommended minimum number of belt cleaners. In addition, the discharge chute shall be designed to accept, with minor modifications, at least one additional cleaner if it is required.

At this 5th U.S. Mine Ventilation Symposium I would like to focus your attention on safety and the contribution of the ventilation engineer over the past 50 years. This conference affords us the opportunity to express, to listen, and to learn. As ventilation engineers it is indeed an exciting time--a time that not only stimulates our imagination but also pin points our aims in our quest to obtain zero fatalities by the year 2000, the goal expressed by William J. Tattersall, Assistant Secretary of Labor, Mine Safety and Health Administration. In the past, coal mine ventilation has often been unfortunately synonymous with explosions and resulting fires. Those not familiar with us do not recognize the painful evolution of the coal mining industry and particularly the evolution of mine ventilation. To put my presentation into perspective, I recently reviewed a U.S. Bureau of Mines Bulletin No. 586 - "Historical Summary of Coal-Mine Explosions in the United States 1810 - 1958 prepared by H. B. Humphrey Mining Health and Safety Engineer. This bulletin was published in 1960. Mr. Humphrey stated "In 1946, factors contributing to the explosions occurring from 1941 to 1945 were: (1) The rapid increase in the use of electrical equipment at face regions where gas and dust are most likely to be found; (2) the increased demand for coal with the desire to obtain maximum tonnage per machine at minimum cost, which in many mines has resulted in neglect of even rudimentary precautionary measures; (3) multiple-shift operation without provision of time for adequate maintenance of equipment, effective rock dusting, and testing for gas; (4) decrease in supervision owing to demands on supervisors for maximum tonnage and loss of competent supervisors to other employment; (5) lack of effective supervision, owing to numerous new conditions, some of them war-connected; (6) inability to obtain adequate equipment repair and replacement parts; (7) shortage of labor and inadequate training of coal-mine workers; and (8) failure of both miners and mining officials to show regard for safety in changing from hand-loading to mechanized methods". Most of the eight factors listed by Mr. Humphrey continue to affect our work lives as mining engineers. The increased demand for coal with the desire to obtain maximum tonnage per machine at minimum cost has never changed. The local and regionalized coal industry of the 40's is today competing against the world coal market. Our mines work or shut down based on cost. This has always been the case. During the five year time-frame Mr. Humphrey was documenting, 345 miners were killed in major explosions. A major explosion was one in which five or more miners were killed in a single accident. In addition, 105 more miners were killed in minor explosions for a total of 450. What a wanton waste of life. What fears, anxieties, miseries, and sufferings were created by these accidents. However, we must remember and keep in mind that the coal mining company officials, engineers, and foremen, the governmental agencies- federal, state, and local - were using the technical tools and knowledge available to operate the mines as safely as they could. Obviously mine ventilation engineering technology was woefully inadequate.

I have been asked to give you the National Coal Association's (NCA) view of the future of the coal industry. However, before discussing the outlook for the future I would like to set the stage by taking a brief look at how the industry has changed over the last decade. In 1977 the coal industry was in the midst of a period of steady growth. Although most of the gains in the early and mid 1970's occurred in the west, the industry was still predominately eastern, with eastern production accounting for 76 percent of the 697 million total tons produced in 1977. The labor force was nearing a high - at over 220,000 workers, and the number of active mines was also at a decade high of over 6,000. Productivity on the other hand was at a low. The average miner produced 1.80 tons per hour, and labor relations were also at a low point. Projections for coal's future were very optimistic, mainly because of the unprecedented growth in coal use by the utility industry. In 1977 the 477 million tons of utility coal accounted for 68 percent of U.S. coal production, and the utility industry planned on 129,000 MW of new coal-fired capacity over the next decade. Consumption of metallurgical coal at coke plants was the second largest market at 78 million tons; the industrial and residential market consumed 70 million tons and exports were at 54 million tons. But in retrospect, a lot was happening in 1977 that signalled many changes in the coal industry: - Amendments to the Clean Air Act were passed, which required that utilities take an entirely different approach to meeting New Source Performance Standards at new plants, and required that standards be set for industrial boilers as well; - the Surface Mining and Reclamation Act became law; -electrical generation, despite the optimistic forecasts, was nearing the end of a period of close to five percent annual growth; -1977 ended and 1978 began with the longest coal strike in U.S. history. -crude oil imports in the U.S. reached an all time high as did both total consumption of petroleum products in the U.S. and oil consumption at utilities. The high level of oil imports set the stage for the oil price increases of 1979 and 1980 which resulted in an immediate increase in demand for coal, not only in the United States, but world wide. Labor strikes in Australia and Poland sent foreign buyers to the U.S. literally in droves, and quickly made the U.S. a force in the world steam coal market. The U.S. coal and transportation industries responded to this overwhelming potential demand for coal. In a very short time, the capability had been developed to mine and transport the 1.2 billion tons of coal that forecasters said would be needed by the mid 1980's. What was not anticipated was that the economic effects of sharply higher oil prices would dampen demand for energy, especially for electricity, as quickly as we have seen; that coal industries in other countries would respond as rapidly as the U.S. coal industry, and at a rate

The prospects for near-term growth in coal demand are exceptional: the federal government recently targeted 141 oil- and gas-fired generating units for mandatory conversion to coal; coal-to-synfuel developments are proceeding at a steady clip, with construction of a $1.2 billion gasification plant to begin this year in Beulah, ND; uncertainty over nuclear power and stratospheric oil prices enhance the steam coal market; the export market is ripening; and an influential new political force (the Senate Coal Caucus and Congressional Coal Group) is flexing its muscles on Capitol Hill. But the rosy picture is muddled by signals, often conflicting, sent out by federal agencies. Although EPA can be credited with relaxing its grip on the Clean Air Act, its sulfur dioxide control strategy is still often at odds with the Administration's call for domestic energy (coal) development. B. R. Brown, president of Consolidation Coal Co., sums up the situation: "Every mule is pulling in a different direction." Often in the midst of the fray is the small operator who has been hardest hit by the stagnation of coal markets. Layoffs, shortened work weeks, and mine closures were rampant in the eastern and midwestern coal fields, even among large producers. The longstanding boom in western coal was tempered during 1979 by a noticeable slowdown in announcements of new mine construction. The prognosis: Eastern coal will remain in the doldrums for quite a while to come as it works off some 90 Mt of overcapacity. Midwestern coal will fare no better due to the regulatory-influenced appetite of midwestern utilities for low-sulfur western coal. This displacement should ease, though, as new power plants equipped to burn high-sulfur coal come on line in the years ahead. In the West, the National Coal Association projects production to increase a healthy- 10% this year, although mine-to-market transportation looms as the single largest stumbling block to marketing efforts. Fatalities Up 40% in 1979 The National Coal Association estimated total coal production in 1979 at 671 Mt, an increase of 13% over 1978. Of this total, the East and Mid-west accounted for 476 Mt (71%) and the West produced 195 Mt (29%). With the consistent rise in western production playing against flat outputs in the East and Midwest, underground mining's share of total production continues to slip and is expected to account for only 38-39% in 1980. Incidence of deaths and injuries at US coal mines soared in 1979 over 1978 rates. MSHA figures (still subject to final adjustments) reveal a death rate of 0.07 per 200 000 man-hours, up 40% over 1978's 0.05 figure. MSHA chief Bob Lagather attributed the death incidence to the large number of new coal mines put on line in 1978, which he estimated at between 350 and 400. Nonfatal injuries rose to 8.48 per 200 000 man-hours, up about 15% from a 1978 rate of 7.35. In absolute numbers, MSHA counted 144 fatalities and 18 111 lost-day injuries during the 1979 calendar year. The 144 coal mining deaths in 1979 is the highest number of coal fatalities at US mines since 1975.

Introduction In 1987, the US economy continued to grow steadily, reaching an annual rate of $4.6 trillion in the last quarter. The value of domestically processed mineralbased materials rose slightly to $250 billion. The value of US metals rose sharply to more than $7 billion. Industrial minerals rose slightly to $18 billion recycled scrap was valued at $4 billion. Metal prices rose sharply toward year-end. A number of mining and metal companies experienced increased profitability, fostering more optimism about the future. Consumer demand strongly affects mining because the US economy is relatively saturated with long-lived products. Consumer, mortgage, and federal debt continue to rise. 244 million citizens already possess 170 million licensed motor vehicles and 100 million dwelling units. New car production fell 9% to 7.1 million units, but truck and bus production rose 9% to 3.8 million units. New housing starts fell 10% to 1.6 million units. Excess productive capacity exists not only in the US, but also in many other countries. Consequently, the US mineral industry is encountering stiff competition from others, as well as increasing competition from newer engi¬neered materials. Domestic production of plastics rose 9% to 25 Mt (27 million st) - on a volume basis, double all metals. Some 7% of petroleum goes to make petrochemicals including plastics. Imports of nonfuel mineral-based materials in 1987 were valued at $37 billion and exports at $24 billion. Imports supplied a significant proportion of total US consumption of several important mineral materials, including many classified as strategic and critical. In December, the Congress mandated that any major changes in stockpile goals be made only by law, and that the Department of Defense submit annually detailed stockpile supply/demand analyses. Concern about apartheid in South Africa continued, resulting in increasing interest about chromium, manganese, platinum-group metals, cobalt, vanadium, and gold. The National Critical Materials Council continued to monitor the US materials position. The Defense Production Act, authorizing priorities and allocations, supply expansions, voluntary agreements, and the National Defense Executive Reserve continues in effect through Sept. 30, 1989. Under the DPA, the US Bureau of Mines maintains the Emergency Minerals Administration. Further consultations were held with Canada to strengthen the North American defense industrial base. Coal production, 60% from open pits, rose 2% to 825 Mt (910 million st) valued at $21 billion. Nearly four-fifths was burned to generate 56% of US electricity. Exports included 42 Mt (51 million st) of metallurgical coal and 24 Mt (27 million st) of steam coal, with a total value of $3.3 billion. Domestic petroleum production fell 5% to 480 Mm' (3 billion bbl). Uranium mining, including recovery from phosphates, fell 4% to 5.9 kt (6500 st). Nonfuel minerals Major metals: Raw steel production - a major consumer of many minerals - rose 7% to 79 Mt (87 million st). Domestic iron ore production rose 11% to 44 Mt (48 million st), about 96% pelletized. Net imports, though, fell 8% to 11 Mt (10 million st). Raw steelmaking capacity fell 6% to 102 Mt (112 mil-

Over 10 million tourists have visited Vietnam in 2016. Travel and tourism accounted for 9.3% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2014. At the same time, as with many other resource-rich developing countries, Vietnam has been developing its extractive resources sector as a means of promoting the country’s social and economic development. In 2015, mining was the third largest contributor to GDP, and accounted for 8% of Vietnam’s gross domestic product. Vietnam is the third largest mineral producer in SE Asia. Although it produces zinc, nickel, bauxite, and manganese, coal mining is its most developed sector. The country has over two hundred coal mines, and total reserves of approximately 6 billion tons. Quang Nihn Province, where the World Heritage Site Ha Long Bay is located, is a very important tourism destination. It is also a coal-rich region where mining extraction and processing have been active since the early 20th century. Vietnam is signatory of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The country is aware of the importance and the challenges involved in managing the extractive sector in a way that does not undermine its tourism industry and yet that contributes to the country’s sustainable development. To this end Vietnam is taking actions towards implementing more advanced coal-mining extraction and processing techniques. The country is furthermore promoting a responsible mining sector, and is investing in programs that foster environmental protection and sustainable tourism. This paper examines the case of the Ha Long Bay region and the project involved in relocating the Hong Gai coal preparatory factory from a seafront area to a mountainside area. This paper provides a preliminary review of the initiatives adopted by the government of Vietnam to address the existing challenges that have resulted from a focus on promoting the country’s socio-economic development through the exploration of its rich coal endowment. Furthermore, it also describes Vietnam’s legal and policy frameworks. In conclusion this study identified that Vietnam has drafted a National Action Plan to implement the Sustainable Development Goals. The country is also taking an integrated approach to implementing the SDGs agenda and that it is assigning responsibility to a variety of ministries to achieve SDGs’ specific targets. Furthermore the country is changing policies and the legal framework in order to facilitating the execution of the work of agencies that are responsible for implementation, regulation and enforcement. In this respect, the approval of the National Action Plan on Sustainable Development Goals is another important step in that direction. While the decision of supplying its internal market with high quality coal helps minimize negative environmental impacts in Vietnam, exporting low quality coal to other countries does not help resolve the problem of CO2 emissions globally. With respect to the 2030 Agenda, this may be considered a temporary solution since to achieve the SDG goals, Vietnam will have to consider other sources of cleaner energy in order to align with the Sustainable Development Goals # 7 on affordable and clean energy.

Introduction The 150 MW circulating fluidized bed (CFB) power plant described in this article is the product of recent Bechtel experience in the industrial power and steam market, where the economic feasibility of fluidized bed projects has been proven. The ability of CFB boilers to burn low grade fuels makes it possible to burn low ranking coals or coal wastes. These include anthracite culm, coal mine rejects, and coal wash-plant-waste slurries. This article also addresses the impact of fuel characteristics on plant design. This includes solids handling, steam generation, sulfur capture, and auxiliary load requirements. The uncertain economic environment in which utilities must now operate has shifted the industry's interest away from large, base-loaded generating units to small, more versatile installations. Utilities now consider purchasing new generating capacity in smaller increments and staging its deployment to correspond with demand increases. In this way, they lower their risk in the increasingly hazardous art of long-range load forecasting. This strategy has many advantages. Multiple, smaller units have inherently greater turndown capability and better availability than a single larger unit of the same size. In addition, the smaller units will each have better cycling capability. And, with CFB combustion, the smaller units will have greater fuel flexibility. General plant description The 150 MW powerplant described here is a grassroots CFB unit. Fluidized bed technology differs from conventional combustion techniques. With CFB, solid fuel, together with inert material such as sand, gypsum, limestone, or ash from the fuel, is kept suspended in the combustion chamber. This is done by using the action of the fluidizing air distributed below the bed. Fluidization promotes the turbulent mixing conditions required for good combustion. The turbulence causes the entire mass of solids to behave like a liquid. The result is improved mixing. This allows heat to be generated at a lower and more uniformly distributed temperature that is below the ash fusion temperature of most coals. The fluidizing mechanism offers several other advantages over conventional combustion. There is less volatilization of alkali compounds, which cause deposits on boiler tube surfaces. And there is less sensitivity to the quantity and nature of the ash in the fuel. The low combustion temperatures prevent vitrification of the ash particles and minimize problems associated with furnace slagging. The ability to select from many fuels is one of the major advantages of CFB combustor technology. Fuels that can be burned in CFB plants to produce steam and electricity include: low grade coals with high ash or sulfur, lignite, peat, wood and pulp products, biomass, refuse, anthracite culm, petroleum coke, and oil shales. The plant's turbine cycle uses superheated steam at 12.4 MPa (1800 psi) and 538°C (1000°F), with single reheat to 538°C (1000°F). Two high pressure and three low pressure, closed, feedwater heaters are furnished. So is a deaerator, which is an open, direct-contact heater. The CFB plant exceeds EPA's New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) for air emissions. The design limits sulfur dioxide (SO,) emissions to 0.25 kg/GJ (0.6 lb per million Btu). Recent mining regulations have increased the need for detailed engineering and environmental information pertaining to the hydrogeologic environment in mining areas. The cost of obtaining such hydrogeologic information has also increased. After mineralization of potentially economic grade ore and tonnage has been identified, and after completing preliminary mining feasibility studies (suggesting that development is merited), a second exploration phase can incorporate a simple, cost-effective baseline hydrogeologic data reconnaissance program that is limited but useful. Using exploration drill holes only, this program can provide a direct indication of where ground water is encountered. Also, reasonable estimates can be made on the relative production of water from various water-bearing strata, a composite potentiometric surface map can be prepared, and the general chemistry of the ground water can be characterized. This article outlines what typical baseline hydrogeologic data are needed and describes how it can be easily obtained during exploration drilling. Introduction Major engineering and environmental ground water parameters can be identified early in a project by using, drill hole data obtained from a mineral exploration program, designed by the mine geologist and hydrogeologist. Most importantly, data obtained in the exploration drilling program can be used to design a logical, defensible, and cost-effective baseline ground water data reconnaissance and monitor well program, which would be required for mine design and ultimately for mine permit approval. Drilling Where possible, exploration drill holes should be drilled with conventional rotary drilling equipment using air or, if necessary, water as the drilling fluid. Rotary air or water drilling generally allow good delineation of the first major saturated or water-bearing zone. If mud must be used during drilling, distinct hydrogeologic zones can still be defined, although the task may be considerably more difficult. Water Levels Static water levels can be obtained from selected exploration drill holes at specific depths while additional boreholes are drilled. Such measurements should not, however, be conducted until the hole has been developed with air (no water) and has stabilized at each of the depths to be measured. Such water-level information can be particularly useful when more than one aquifer exists. Where mine development is eminent, the hydrogeologist should install 50-100 mm (2-4 in.) diameter PVC casing in select drill holes. The PVC should be slotted, gravel packed, and properly sealed so additional hydrogeologic data can be collected for specific hydrogeologic zones at a later date. Such data could include water level information, permeability estimates based on injection and /or pumping tests, and water quality data. Where casing is not installed in drill holes, or when the drill holes are abandoned, the holes should be properly grouted and back-filled to the ground surface to prevent potential future ground water contamination. Monitoring Air Lift Water Production Estimates of the relative production from various water-bearing strata can be obtained from selected exploration drill holes. If ground water is encountered, its air lift (ground water flow) production can be measured at distinct intervals using a surface water flow measuring device, such as a portable Parshall

Barbaro et al. (1990) implemented a tedious study aimed at delineating the short-scale spatial variability of sulfur in a coal seam. It is not possible, however, to extend their conclusions to any other coal seam or use theirs in any other fashion, because the background geology was not presented. Nor were the conclusions accompanied by geological interpretations in the paper. In addition, an unfortunate printing error occurred where the total sulfur (determined by High Temperature Combustion) variogram in Fig.3 was duplicated in Fig. 2 instead of the seam height variogram. A more serious error, however, has been committed in the definition of the variable, seam height. What is defined as seam height by Barbaro et al. (1990) is, in essence, mining height, and is not a regionalized variable that should be studied by geostatistical methods directly. Despite the fact that the variable, seam height, is not defined in the paper explicitly, the following quotation discloses the fallacy: "All roof rock that exceeded 1.8 m (6 ft) from the floor was not taken because the longwall was operated to not mine more than 1.8 m (6 ft) unless the coal seam height exceeded 1.8 m (6 ft)." From this definition, the seam height, and therefore the sampling height, is equal to the actual coal thickness, if the coal thickness is greater than 1.8 m (6 ft). Otherwise, it is equal to the sum of the coal thickness plus the thickness of the roof rock that complements the thickness to 1.8 m (6 ft). In the latter case, the seam height is constant and equal to 1.8 m (6 ft). It is possible to conduct a variogram study on a pool of samples that are realizations of two different variables. But the conclusions derived would not belong to any one of the two variables uniquely and, therefore, do not possess any significance. Geostatistical analysis is irrelevant for the sum of multiple regionalized variables formed by arbitrary selections. In a two¬seam setting, for example, the mining height, as defined by the thickness of one seam at one location and the thickness of both seams at another location (due to quality and/or minimum thickness considerations perhaps), should not be used in the calculation of one common variogram. The two seams should be modeled separately. They can then be combined according to the specific purposes of the study. On the other hand, if a constant is added to a regionalized variable (to incorporate dilution perhaps), the variogram of the new variable will not change. Barbaro et al.( 1990), surprisingly, does not give any geologi¬cal interpretation of their results despite the fact that most of them can be explained by the origins of sulfur in a coal seam. The presentation of the results of a geostatistical study with no reference to the geology of the deposit is uninformative. It may also be misleading for the potential users of geostatistics. It is not unusual to find nuggets of pyrite in coal seams. In such cases, pyritic sulfur will probably display a spatial structure for only a very small distance that will appear in the experimen-

INTRODUCTION The effect of stress concentration in coal seams leads to a sudden release in the form of rock bursts. This effect is controlled along many lines, but the most efficient methods consist in preventing the accumulation of energy in the seam or in the roof. The over- burden weight resulting from mining is the main cause of excessive stresses in a seam. An additional weighting of roof takes place due to formation of abutment loads. The accumulation of energy in the roof takes place where thick sandstone beds occur in overburden strata. An essential problem is to watch, with appropriate measurements, the stress of coal and roof rocks, and to conclude, on this basis, the degree of rock burst hazard. The methods for determining the stresses in a coal seam are quite well developed at present. Let me mention here the seismoacoustic methods, or borehole overcoring measurement methods. On the other hand, an examination of the state of stress in the roof rocks is almost impossible at the actual stage of development of the measuring technique. Hence, the model of stresses in roof was analyzed and determined theoretically. Based on this model, a technology for roof fracturing was developed which aims at destressing rock masses in a planned way. The essentials of the fracturing method consist of a controlled breaking of sandstone roof beds in order to: - prevent the excessive weight on the pillar - prevent a spontaneous breaking of roof beds at a limiting state followed by sudden energy release. High pressure fluid infusion is used to release buildup of stresses. THEORETICAL AND RESEARCH BASES According to the tests carried out by A. Kidybinski by the method of finite elements, isobars of stresses occurring in the roof over the working face are shown in [Fig. 1]. The results indicate: - the highest values of compressive stresses occur in the roof directly over the seam, at a distance of about 5 m ahead of the working face - at a distance of about 22 m above the seam there is a line of transition of compressive stresses into tensile - within the tested roof area, the highest tensile stresses occur at a vertical distance of 35 m, and at a horizontal distance of 20 m from the line of the working face. H. Gil (1) determined the pres- sure initiating the fracture of roof rocks by the formula: [ ] On the basis of results of analysis of isobars, and of the initiation of failure stress formula (1), isobars may be designed for a given roof class. Assuming for sandstones the Poisson ratio equal 0.3, a field of failure stresses presented in [Fig. 2] is obtained. In this figure it can be seen in which areas the effects of sandstone breakage may be obtained with the operation of a determined hydraulic pressure. To use formula (I), the knowledge of Rr is still necessary. This value may be determined in two ways: - taking a sample and testing it in the laboratory, if there is access to roof rocks in the existing openings, - drilling boreholes in the roof from surface and examination of the rock mass by using hydraulic breaking, if there is no access to roof rocks.

The comminution laws The grindability of the ores or minerals is an important factor that could not be deduced from their mineralogical characteristics (Testut, 1958). Many theories have been proposed to determine the amount of work required in a comminution operation as a function of the nature of material, size and shape of the minerals before and after of comminution. The most important laws are proposed by Rittinger, Kick and Bond. According to Rittinger (1867), the work is directly proportional to the new surfaces produced during the comminution. Kick (1885) believes that the work needed to produce similar modification is proportional to the volume or mass of the material. Bond, during his 25 years of experience and research, reached to the conclusion that on the average the energy required for a known comminution is between the Rittinger's and Kick's laws (Bond, 1952). According to Bond's Third Theory, the work input is proportional to the new crack tip length produced during the particle breakage, and equals the work represented by the product minus that represented by the feed. The work input is given by the following equation: [111W = 1 Owi( FP FF(1)] where W is the The energy input to the mill, (kWh/st); F is the Feed size based on 80% passed, (µm); P is the Product size based on 80% passed, (µm); and W; is the Work Index, (kWh/st) Methods to determine the Bond Work Index Various methods have been proposed by Bond to determine the Work Index. There are some problems with the Standard Bond Grindability Test: •Requiring a special mill. •Requiring a relatively large amount of sample. •Being relatively time consuming and tedious. [ ] During the recent years, numerous attempts have been made to install faster and easier methods to determine the Work Index. A complete description of these methods is presented by Yap et al. (1982). Determining the Bond Work Index by a new size ball mill During the recent years, researchers at the University of Tehran determined the Bond Work Index, using the Anaconda simplified methods by its Denver 305- x 127-mm (12 x 5-in.) laboratory wet ball mill. The equation used to calculate the Work Index for the above mill containing 16.12 kg (35.5 lbs) of steel balls is as follow: [1 _ 1-1W;=0.54x [P [)(2)] In addition, an attempt has been made to determine the Bond Work Index similar to standard Bond ball mill procedure but by a different ball mill, smaller and in consequent portable and less laborious than the Bond ball mill. Method description Just as the standard Bond grindability test, this method is a locked-cycle dry grinding and screening process that is carried out until steady state condition is reached. Test equipment The test is conducted in a special ball mill, called the New Size Ball Mill (NSBM). The mill is scaled down with a coefficient of two-thirds from the standard Bond ball mill. It measures 200 x 200 mm (8- x 8-in.) inside (instead of 300 x 300 mm or 12 x 12 in. in Bond ball mill). Just like the Bond

M.S. Azun The article unfortunately has some serious flaws negating the usefulness of the paper. The authors claim that kriging (linear kriging) is superior to other methods such as polygon. This is not the case. The deterministic methods (referring to polygon, ID, IDS, etc.) should not be compared with the statistical methods (linear kriging, disjunctive kriging, etc.) because they differ not only in their assumptions, but also their tools used in estimation. Thus, they give different results. By comparing the results of deterministic methods and linear kriging, the authors conclude that polygon, IDS, and linear kriging give an average thickness close to the value obtained from realizations. Besides, they argue that linear kriging gives less variance than the others (Fig. 2). The first conclusion is expected, due to the well-known central limit theorem. The second is the result of the statistical properties of different estimators. Thus, the comparison presented in the paper is rather meaningless because the authors have failed to follow basic statistical procedures. The numerical results of different approaches to an estimation problem cannot be generalized. In conclusion, the paper is not a meaningful contribution, and sadly, quite erroneous. Reply by E.Y. Baafi and Y.C. Kim The two key contentions made by M.S. Azun regarding the paper are: deterministic methods should not be compared with statistical methods and, hence, the results are erroneous; and the paper does not make a meaningful contribution. The first contention is an academic one. Most practitioners in ore reserve estimation could care less whether the tool they are using falls under a deterministic or a probabilistic method, so long as it gives the desired answers. It is probably for this reason that, whenever any new tool such as linear kriging is introduced to practioners in the mining industry, they would like to see a comparison test performed between the existing and the more familiar tools with a new and "strange" tool. Only when a new tool passes such a test, the generally conservative mining community would begin to utilize the new tool to its advantage. The second contention, is a subjective one. The final judgment should be left up to the readers within the mining community. If kriging is accepted more among practitioners, partly due to the paper, then the paper makes a practical contribution to the state-of-the art in ore reserve estimation. Finally, M.S. Azun entirely missed two main points in the paper. The first is that any comparative study of kriging vs. Polygonal or IDS should be performed for local estimation and not for global estimation. In the past, kriging was frequently compared with other existing tools in its performance on global estimation. Such results were nearly identical due to the central limit theorem effect, which further prevented the acceptance of kriging by practitioners. The second point is that a single case study using an existing property, as it was frequently performed in the past, is not sufficient because results depend not only on the tool itself, but also on the nature of the mineralization.

INTRODUCTION Truck haulage of muck in underground mining operations has been in use around the world for many years. From the late 1.950s into the early 1970s, haulage by means of load-haul-dump (LHD) units challenged haulage by means of trucks, and, to a large degree, LHD units dominated the trackless concept of moving mate¬rial underground. However, beginning in 1975, the emphasis began to shift back to the use of trucks, with LHD units assuming the secondary role of loading the trucks. Over the years, several manufacturers have been offering trucks with capacities ranging from 4.5 to 45.4 t (5 to 50 st) and with features that specifically address the constraints of underground operation. TRUCK TYPES Three different types of trucks are available for use underground, namely the tip dumpers, telescoping dumpers, and push-plate dumpers. The following para¬graphs describe each of these three types. Tip Dumpers Tip dumpers are designed to lift the truck box, using gravity to dump the load out the rear of the box. The primary application of these trucks is in the haulage of muck to the surface. However, these trucks also may be utilized underground, if a chamber is provided to accommodate the raised truck box at the dumping point. Fig. 1 illustrates a four-wheel drive truck with a 10.0-t (11-st) capacity; this truck is only 1.9 m (6.25 ft) wide and is designed specifically to follow narrow and winding vein courses. Fig. 2 illustrates a two-wheel drive tip dumper with a 24.5-t (27-st) capacity; this truck operates on 12% grades with firm dry surfaces and in modes both loaded-up and loaded¬down. Telescoping Dumpers Telescoping dumpers specifically address the constraints imposed by low back heights, and they represent an optimization of compressed envelope size with maximum payload capacity. Figs. 3 and 4 illus¬trate a typical telescoping dumper with a capacity of 18.1 t (20 st). Fig. 3 shows the box in position for carrying the load, and Fig. 4 shows the same truck with the box in the full-dumping position. Fig. 5 illustrates the loading and dumping cycles. Fig. 6 illustrates an approximation of how an LHD unit with an eject-o-dump (EOD) bucket would be used to load over the rear of this type of truck. Fig. 6 shows a low-profile telescoping truck in the first stage of loading, with a 6.8-t (7.5-st) LHD unit equipped with an EOD bucket. A loader with a smaller capacity and a narrower bucket would allow the bucket to fit inside the truck box and would achieve an even lower loading height than that illustrated. Gen erally, an LHD unit equipped with an EOD bucket and teamed with a telescoping dump truck can be used with a lower back height than could any other front-end loader and truck team. Push-Plate Dumpers Push-plate dumpers are similar to telescoping Bump¬ers, except that they do not have the two-stage box. Instead, push-plate dumpers utilize a single push plate to discharge the load out the rear of the box. Gen erally, these units are limited to payload capacities of about 9 t (10 st). Fig. 7 illustrates a typical push-plate dumper.

Today's coal mines are turning more and more to belt haulage as the key system to transport coal out of the mine. The advantages of using belt for both intermediate and main haulage are numerous. Belts are reliable high capacity haulage mediums that can be utilized at low operating costs. They are adaptable to rolls in the coal seam and can handle relatively steep grades. They are not noisy, operate with a minimum amount of labor, and are easily extended and retracted. Belts require the least power of any haulage medium, are easily controlled by push- buttons and interlocks, and present low fire and safety hazards. Belt haulage can also be the largest source of operational problems for mine management when not installed correctly. This chapter and Chap. 6 concentrate on proper installation of both the static and dynamic components of efficient belt haulage. This chapter looks at the static system component, composed of the belt drive, its installation and operation, as well as belt takeup and transfer point construction. These components do not change readily over the life of the installation, hence the term static system. Chap. 6 discusses the dynamic system of belt line construction, which includes belt splicing, breaking down and reanchoring the tailpiece, and extending the belt line, plus operational and maintenance items for belt operation. This chapter is divided into three major topics. The first is a general discussion covering the points necessary for designing an efficient haulage system; the second looks at installing belt drives, head rollers, and takeups, and the third discussion centers on installing efficient and effective transfer points along the haulage system. Each will address the design and construction issues facing the engineer or construction supervisor in charge of installing the system. Before looking at the static system, it may be useful to review some of the basic design factors and considerations of all belt haulage systems. The material usually carried on an underground belt is a mixture of raw coal and rock, commonly known as run-of-mine (ROM) coal. This mixture has certain material characteristics that guide the mining engineer to the final and proper belt selection. The characteristics looked at most frequently are: 1) Angle of Repose is the angle at which the material will freely make a pile. Most ROM coal averages a 35"-39" angle of repose. 2) Angle of Surcharge is the angle a pile will assume on a moving conveyor. This ranges from 5" to 15" less than the angle of repose in most materials. For ROM coals, 25" is the average angle of surcharge. 3) Flowability, which determines the maxi- mum cross-sectional area needed to carry any given material on a belt. It is measured by the angles of repose and surcharge of a material and also serves as an index of the safe incline angle for the belt line. These characteristics, plus practical engineering research and development work are defined by an organization called the Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association (CEMA) for most bulk materials. CEMA also provides a code for each classified material depending on the characteristics above and the subjective considerations of the average size to be encountered, the abrasiveness of the material, and any miscellaneous characteristics (oil resistive, corrosive, etc.) which may be important. "Numerous aspects of underground construction, from structural stability to construction costs, depended on the tunnel quality, including blast damage and the Excavation Damage Zone. Accurately quantifying the extent and severity of damaged rock is a problem. Recent technical developments in the field of Measurement While Drilling (MWD), including software for on-board logging and on-site analysis, have shown potential for rock-mass characterization. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and P-wave velocity measurement have also improved and show similar potential. This paper explores the use of MWD, GPR and P-wave velocity measurements and uses them in techniques for excavation damage characterization and prediction. The paper is based on data collected from a small underground waste-collection site in central Stockholm, Sweden. The data is correlated against rock-mass characteristics and their responses are evaluated. Results indicate potential for excavation damage characterization for all tested techniques, which could minimize blasting damage and improve the over-all tunnel quality. 1 INTRODUCTION During underground excavation the rock mass is influenced in many ways. The Excavation Damage Zone (EDZ) is a result of these influences. The EDZ can be defined by an irreversible change in rock mass properties, for example increased permeability. EDZ is influenced by the excavation method, the rock mass properties and the in-situ stresses in the area of the tunneling. Since the 1990s research has been done on the EDZ by Emsley et al. (1997), Christiansson et al. (2005), Olsson et al. (2009), Ouchterlony et al. (2009), Ittner et al. (2014), and Siren et al. (2015). Based on past literature the EDZ have in this paper been separated in the following subzones: 1. Failure Zone or over-break is the area outside the planned tunnel profile, including the Look-Out and hole deviation. This zone consists of fracture networks (both natural and blasting-induced), that caused rock fall-outs. The extent of the over-break can be determined by volumetric scanning and photogrammetry and the half cast factor can be used as a damage indicator. 2. The Damaged Zone is split into three parts and but the quantity and depth of damage is difficult to measure. Although it can be visualized by sawing of rock slices in the tunnel wall (Olsson et al. 2009), diamond coring (DC) or P-wave velocity reduction (Jern 2001): a. Inner Damage Zone (Crush Zone): It is located directly around the drill hole, and is caused by the shock-wave energy of the detonation. The micro fractures in the Crush Zone produce a white-wash (rock dust) in the half cast. b. Transition Zone: This zone consists of micro fractures that connect and form macro fractures, both radially and parallel to the tunnel wall. The macro fractures are caused by the gas expansion during the detonation of the explosive; it increases the pressure in the (micro) fractures and creates the macro fractures. Seismic reflection, rock slicing and core drilling can be used for the examination. c. Progressing Zone: In this zone the existing radial fractures propagate due to the increase gas pressure inside these macro fractures. Examination methods are seismic reflection, rock slicing and core drilling. In addition, the Peak Particle Velocity (vibrations) could be used to estimate the depth (Tesarik et al. 2011)."

"INTRODUCTIONProject-related studies showed that lab tests are a helpful tool for the planning of EPB tunneling and soil conditioning in cohesionless soils. This type of ground commonly represents the extended application range for EPB shields, which demands for a treatment with additives. Considering soil conditioning with foam, so far, approaches exist for the investigation of the foam quality and of the conditioning behavior of soils (e.g. (EFNARC GUIDELINES 2001 2003)), but not any standards for testing procedures related to soil conditioning. State-of-the-art research on the topic is and was conducted for example in Bochum (Germany) cf. (Budach 2012; Maidl 1995), in Lyon (France) cf. (Quebaud et al. 1998), in Oxford and Cambridge (Great Britain) cf. (Borghi 2006; Peña Duarte 2007), in Delft (Netherlands) cf. (Bezuijen and Schaminée 2001), in Turin (Italy) cf. (Borio 2010; Peila et al. 2013; Vinai 2006), and in Aachen (Germany) cf. (Vennekötter 2012). Additionally, applied science is reported by the tunneling practice and suppliers of conditioning agents. Although the research focus in all these and further studies varied, similar test methods and test series were applied. A standardization of essential properties and testing methods (setup and procedures) however did not take place. The results from laboratory testing can only function as index values for practice because in the studies, production and application of the conditioning agents mainly takes place under atmospheric conditions. Nevertheless, the tests enable basic understanding of feasibility as well as processes and interactions going on during soil conditioning. For recommendations for standardized and reproducible testing see (Budach 2012; Budach and Thewes 2015).The most extensive investigations on the flow behavior of soil-foam mixtures have been performed by using the slump test from concrete engineering, cf. (DIN EN 12350-2 2009-08), which originally is applied on evaluating the workability of fresh concrete. Although this test does not describe the actual flow behavior, it rather represents an index on the workability, very much experience exists with this test method. Besides others, the workability – or flow behavior – of the EPB support medium certainly is a major factor of influence on the properties of the material in the excavation chamber and thus, for effective tunneling with EPB shields, cf. (Galli and Thewes 2014). For a summary of various investigations on the workability of conditioned soils using the slump test and resulting recommended slump ranges see (Budach 2012; Vinai 2006). Thereof, slumps between 10 and 20 cm have been reported as suitable workability for EPB applications. However, there is actually not much known about the real flow behavior of soil-foam mixtures related to rheological properties such as the viscosity (?) or potential yield stresses (t0). These physical values are necessary for a realistic determination of face pressure, for the design of required torques, and for an evaluation of the material flow at different locations in the excavation chamber, in the screw conveyor or on the conveyor belt. To generate a linear pressure distribution at the tunnel face, as it is assumed a priori, a low-viscosity fluid is favorable, whereas in the screw conveyor, a high-viscous fluid is needed for a controlled pressure decrease. On the conveyor belt, yield stress plays an important role preventing deliquescence and spilling from the belt. Attempts in characterizing the actual flowing of soil-foam mixtures have so far only been made by few researchers, the application of rheometry is rare."

INTRODUCTION Mining of uranium does not differ, in many respects, from the mining of other metals; the ore must be drilled, blasted and transported in an underground or surface mine. Underground mining proceeds by the continuous development and advancement of a network of passages and rooms or stopes from which ore is excavated. As in most mines, rock conditions and ore grades in uranium deposits vary from area to area and between different mines. For mineral benefications of this ore in the mills, use is made of various chemicals, often with toxic or hazardous properties.1 As well as the need to control the more conventional hazards associated with any mining and milling operation, special care needs to be exercised in the mining and milling of uranium because of the radioactive nature of the ore. This requires that we examine closely the radiation hazard areas encountered in the mining and milling of uranium, with the broad overview of some of the basic facts in the radiation hazard control programme. To place the hazard in its proper perspective, we require recognition, evaluation and control of those factors arising in and from the workplace which may cause sickness, impaired health and affect the well being among workers or citizens of the community. The radiation environment in uranium mine is complex and variable. Although uranium ore is only mildly radioactive, it naturally contains a complex mixture of radioactive isotopes. Workers are exposed to external gamma radiation, to some beta radiation and to airborne radon, radon daughters and ore dust. All of these types of exposures warrant considerations in formulating control procedures but, in general, radon daughters are known to present the dominant risk. The basis of dose limitation in radiological protection is risk limitation. Long-term epidemiologic studies of United States uranium miners and that of miners in Czechoslovakia indicate that the incidence of lung cancer can be accounted for by a linear relationship with exposure to radon decay products.2 On the basis of this proportional exposure-risk relationship, a risk coefficient for lung cancer in the range of 1-5.10-4 WLM-1 during the total lifetime, has been estimated by UNSCEAR3 and other researchers. It should be noted that this risk coefficient includes the excess lung cancer risk from external gamma radiation in mines and from other carcinogenic chemical effects, if any, to which the miners are normally exposed during their underground work. It also takes into regard the possible synergistic influences. This paper reviews the occurrence of radiation and its control factors and the development of engineering design features for the environmental control at Denison Mine. NATURAL URANIUM SERIES Uranium is the most common element in the Earth's crust. It is widely distributed in nature in all rocks and is readily measurable in the sea. Hence, radon gas is universally produced in every part of the globe. Mining is patently confined to ores containing more than half a kilogram, or so, per tonne of uranium unless it is combined with other marketable metals. Uranium-238 is the first element in the uranium series. In all, there are 13 radioactive decay products of 238U (Fig. 1), ending up as a stable isotope of Lead-206. The whole basis of the radiological hazards associated with the mining and milling of uranium is dependent on the behaviour of these isotopes during each phase of the process.

GENERAL HYDROLOGIC REGIME The total hydrologic cycle must be considered when evaluating potential ground water problems in a mining environment. Precipitation is the ul¬timate source of all surface water and essentially all ground water. Stream flow during low flow periods often orig¬inates as seeps or stream gains (base flow) where the water table intersects the land surface. A stream that is higher in elevation than the ground water system may lose flow, thereby recharging the ground water system. The magnitude of stream gain or loss is dependent upon the hydraulic conductiv¬ity and related properties of the underlying hydrostratigraphic units. Ground water moves constantly from recharge areas to discharge areas (streams and springs) usually at very slow rates. Large quantities of ground water may be in¬tercepted in many underground mining environ¬ments. Construction of an underground mine in saturated formations may encounter ground water inflows ranging from very small to very large and from continuous to intermittent depending upon the hydraulic properties of the hydrostratigraphic units penetrated. SURFACE WATER VARIABLES Precipitation occurs in different forms, varying amounts, and with a wide assortment of temporal and areal distributions in the various mining dis¬tricts within the United States. Mine inflow can be affected in a matter of hours by precipitation events where there is a direct hydraulic interconnection between the mine and the surface through fractures or a mine opening. The timing, form, amount, and distribution of precipitation should be evaluated in a mine inflow study. A portion of the precipitation that falls in a topographic basin moves as sheet flow to runoff channels (Fig. 1). Some of the precipitation infil¬trates the unsaturated soil zone where it can either move laterally as interflow to the surface system to augment stream flow or move downward as re¬-charge to the ground water system. The unsatu¬rated zone (called the zone of aeration or vadose zone) can range in thickness from essentially zero to a few hundred feet. The saturated zone or ground water system occurs below the water table (zone where hydrostatic pressure is greater than atmos¬pheric pressure) where all the pores are filled with water (Freeze and Cherry, 1979, p. 44). Moisture can be lost from any of the systems (surface water system, unsaturated zone, and ground water sys¬tem) by the processes of evaporation and transpir¬ation which return moisture to the atmosphere. Stream flow consists of runoff and interflow components plus an additional base flow compo¬nent (Fig. 2). Base flow constitutes ground water discharge to a stream. Base flow plays an increas¬ingly significant role as total stream flow declines. Base flow is important because it constitutes much if not all stream flow between periods of precipi¬tation when runoff and interflow have largely dis¬sipated. INTERACTION OF SURFACE WATER AND GROUND WATER SYSTEMS Recharge from a surface water system to ground water systems can occur via unsaturated or saturated flow. The amount of recharge is depen¬dent primarily upon the vertical hydraulic conduc¬tivity of the formations underlying the stream and the availability of water. Streams that flow over low hydraulic conductivity formations lose little water even if the ground water levels are significantly lower than the stream. A ground water system may contribute flow to a surface water system but nor¬mally only by saturated flow. This contribution usually takes the form of seeps, springs, and the base flow of streams.
