In some rural regions of Peru, artisanal gold mining is currently an essential activity as it provides an important source of income. In the Huanca region (Ayacucho Department) gold deposits are not attractive for mining companies due to their reduced size, but they have enough interest for artisanal mining because of the ease and low cost of mining operations. Artisanal gold mining represents an important damage for the environment, because operations related to amalgamation processes using Hg result in special environmental problems besides the typical ones commonly associated to all mining activities. A preliminary sampling has been made in soils, materials from tailing ponds and surface water of the Acarí River, at the site of the Huanca village, according to networks specially designed for the particular conditions of the area. Studies accomplished revealed high mercury concentrations in soils and tailings. Chemical analyses of soils directly collected in the area of the active or abandoned ?quimbaletes? show mercury concentrations ranging from 15.3 mg?kg-1 to 44.2 mg.kg-1. Mercury concentrations in soils decrease as a function of distance from the before mentioned sources. Water quality of the Acarí River that flows through the area does not present important changes as a consequence of the mining and processing operations.

Bucketline dredges are machines for excavating large relatively unconsolidated or weakly consolidated materials from below water level. They are at the upper end of the capital cost range and the lower end of the operating cost range for placer mining machines and have digging capacities, typically, of from 100 cubic yards of bank measure material per operating hour for a shallow digging dredge carrying 2 cubic foot buckets to 1500 cubic yards per hour for a large deep digging dredge with 33 cubic foot buckets. Bucketline dredges used in the mining industry have their mineral processing plants mounted aboard the digging hull. Since dredges are high capital cost items, they require large ore reserves, typically at least ten years. Because of their high capital cost they are usually operated around the clock and for as many months of the year as weather conditions will permit. Typically a well run dredge operating year round would be expected to operate for 600 hours per month. Dredges operated in cold climates cannot operate when the weather freezes the dredge pond or the gravels, and dredges operating at sea cannot operate when high waves might batter the digging ladder against the bottom or upset the mineral extraction process.

Soda ash is the common name for sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), an alkali compound that is the 11th largest inorganic chemical in terms of production of all domestic inorganic and organic chemicals, excluding petrochemical feedstocks. Despite that most people have never heard of soda ash, it is an important industrial compound used to manufacture glass, chemicals, soaps and detergents, pulp and paper, and many other familiar consumer products. Natural alkalis have been used by mankind for thousands of years; however, their industrial manufacture dates back to only the latter half of the 18th century. Natural deposits of sodium carbonate have been known as early as about 3500 BC, when the Egyptians used natural soda ash in making glass. They also mixed lime and soda ash to make sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) that was combined with silicate minerals found in the Sinai desert. This made a soluble silica, which when added to aluminum-rich silt from the Nile River, produced a silica- aluminate cement mortar with excellent bonding properties for construction. The Romans in the first century AD also used natural soda ash in glass manufacture but expanded its use medically for the treatment of colic pains and skin eruptions, and in the making of bread. Elsewhere, people used the ashes of wood to obtain their source of alkali. People learned over time that different types of wood yielded various ashes with different properties; therefore, various plants were burned specifically for their ashes. Ash from plants grown in salt-bearing soils (such as saltwort) and from kelp and other seaweeds, especially Spanish barilla, were so different from ashes obtained from other vegetation that it became known as soda ash (due to its sodium content) versus pot ash, a potassium-based alkali ash. About 13 t of barilla ashes produced 1 t of sodium carbonate and 14 kg of iodine as a byproduct. The difference between these two ashes was relatively obscure until Duhamel Dumonceau made the distinction clear in 1736. The word soda ash developed from common usage and is perhaps more well known today than its synonym sodium carbonate. One of the primary ores of soda ash is trona, a sodium carbonate-bearing mineral that's name is traced back to Arabic origin. Trona also is known internationally by other names such as urao (Venezuela), kaum (Nigeria), natron (from Greek nitron and Latin natrium), and szekso (Hungary). The beginning of the Industrial Revolution in Western Europe in the late 18th century soon put a strain on the availability of raw materials to meet consumer demands. One of these scarce materials was soda ash. Because of the Seven Years War with England and the Napoleonic wars with other parts of Europe, France could not obtain sufficient quantities of Spanish barilla or other supplies of vegetable alkali to meet the growing demand. Efforts were needed to synthesize soda ash. In 1775, the French Academy of Sciences offered a large prize of 2,400 livres to someone who could find an inexpensive method to make soda ash. In September 1791 at St. Denis, Nicolas Leblanc (1742- 1806), a French chemist, developed such a technique using salt, sulfuric acid, coal, and limestone. The French Revolution interfered with its development, and his patent and factory were confiscated with Leblanc receiving only token compensation. Napoleon returned his factory to him; however, Leblanc was not able to raise enough capital to reopen it, and he committed suicide in 1806. A small, but not particularly successful, Leblanc plant was established in England in 1814. It was not until 1823 when the process first became commercially successful in Liverpool, England. The process was introduced in Germany in 1843 and in Austria in 1851 (Harness and Coons, 1942). Soda ash production by the Leblanc process reached its peak of about 599 500 t in 1880, after which it began to decline as the Solvay process became more popular. The Leblanc process was used to a limited extent in Europe during World War I but had disappeared by World War II. The Solvay process, also known as the ammonia-soda process, was developed by Alfred and Ernest (1 838-1922) Solvay in 1861 based on a concept by Fresnel that had been known since 1811. For the next 50 years, the implementation of the idea evaded industrial chemists because no large-scale and economic means could be found to commercialize the concept. Although Ernest Solvay was unaware of the existance of an ammonia-soda concept, he solved the problems by utilizing carbonating towers. The Solvay process produced soda ash from salt, limestone, and coke, with ammonia as a catalyst. With a capital of 136,000 francs, the first plant was built by the Solvay brothers at Couillet, Belgium, in 1863 with production commencing in 1865. Synthetic soda ash production amounted to 1.5 tpd in 1866, but reached 10 tpd by 1872. They patented their use of carbonating towers in 1872 that had made ammonia-soda manufacturing a successful continuous process. Their second plant was built in 1872 at Dombasle, France. In 1874, the first Solvay plant in England was built at Northwich by Ludwig Mond, the namesake of Brunner Mond and Co. (formerly Imperial Chemical Industries), the company that currently operates the two English Solvay plants. In the United States, William B. Cogswell in February 1879 heard a presentation on the Solvay process and sailed to Europe to meet with the Solvay brothers to seek their support for using their process in New York. At first, the brothers were not interested; however, Mr. Cogswell was persistent and ultimately gained their support. The Solvay Rocess Co. was formed Sep. 2 1, 1881, and construction began immediately on the first Solvay plant at Geddes, near Syracuse, NY. The plant came onstream Jan. 10, 1884, and produced 11 180 t in its first year of operation. In 1910, rotary calciners were installed that increased capacity to 1 000 tpd. By 1930, plant capacity was up to 2 400 tpd. The facility remained in continuous operation for more than 100 years. By 1939. 10 Solvay soda ash plants were in operation in 6 States throughout the nation. The Syracuse plant was officially closed Jan. 6, 1986, with total shutdown completed by Feb. 1986. Ironically, this facility was the first Solvay plant as well as the last. Other than the first Solvay plant beginning in 1884, the majority of US soda ash supplies during the 19th century came from imports. The remainder of the US supply

9.1 INTRODUCTION There are approximately 70,000 abandoned coal mines nation¬wide, which is about 35 times the number of underground coal mines presently operating. The US Bureau of Mines estimates that there are over 8 million acres of undermined land due to the extraction of coal, metals, and nonmetals. Subsidence has affected more than 2 million acres, and more than 99% of the subsidence is related to underground coal mining. There is reason to believe that some of the remaining 6 million acres of the undermined land have a high potential to subside. The expansion of housing, highways, commercial structures, and other facilities has required the use of many areas that are underlain by abandoned coal mines, and this growth will continue. Many subsidence problems are derived from the collapse of aban¬doned underground coal mines. There are numerous abandoned mine workings in the anthracite fields of northeastern Pennsylva¬nia, in the Appalachian bituminous fields, the Illinois Basin, the Rock Springs, Wyoming area, and other areas of the United States (Gray et al., 1976). Various room and pillar patterns of mining have been used in the dipping anthracite seams and the nearly flat-lying bituminous seams with considerable variation in the per¬centage of coal extracted. The progressive deterioration of pillars, mine floors, and mine roofs after long exposure to air and water may later result in the collapse of strata over the mine entries, the crushing of the remaining coal pillars, or the bearing failure of the mine floor beneath the coal pillars. Subsidence then results as the collapse reaches the ground surface in the form of differential strains, depressions, cracking of the ground, and sinkhole devel¬opment. Subsidence over active longwall mines, which occurs concurrently with mining or is completed within a short period following coal extraction, has been studied extensively over the past decade. On the other hand, subsidence over abandoned coal mines receives little attention by the researchers, mainly because it is difficult to predict and takes place decades after mining has ceased. The techniques of investigating the subsidence events over abandoned coal mines are similar to those employed for active mines except that at the outset, it is necessary to determine whether or not the subsidence events are mining-related (Chugh et al., 1986; Cummings and Singh, 1986; Peng and Hsiung, 1986). This calls for the identification and confirmation of abandoned mine workings under or near the affected surface structures. Gen¬erally old mine maps, if available, are acquired, the surface bore¬holes are drilled for confirmation of the accuracy of the mine maps and determination of the potential for continued subsidence. Sub¬sidence monuments are established and periodic surveys con¬ducted to determine the amount and trends of surface movement in and around the affected surface structures; surface boreholes are used to investigate the integrity of the underground structures (i.e., roof, coal pillars, and floor) by TV camera. They are also used for monitoring the vertical and horizontal movements of the subsur¬face strata by Sondex (FPBX) and inclinometer (PFBI), respec¬tively, for determining the continuity of the subsidence events. Tape extensometers, crackmeters, etc., are used to monitor the development trends of major cracks in the structures or on the ground. These data are used to identify the causes of the subsidence events. Finally, abatement methods are selected to stabilize the structures. It must be noted that most subsidence events over abandoned coal mines are reported after the fact, and investiga¬tions are begun some time after reporting, that the subsequent measured movements are generally much smaller than that at¬tained in the active mines, and that due to lack of knowledge about the damage conditions and the exact location of the abandoned mine workings with respect to the affected surface structures, the precise causes of surface subsidence or surface structural damages are in most cases very difficult to identify. 9.2 TYPES OF SURFACE SUBSIDENCE According to Gray et al. (1977), after examining 354 incidents of subsidence above abandoned mines in the Pittsburgh metropol¬itan area, the subsidence features have a mean diameter (i.e. the average of long and short dimensions) from less than 1 ft to 1600 ft, with 84% less than or equal to 15 ft; the subsidence features have a depth ranging from less than 1 ft to 48 ft, with 89% less than 25 ft; 66% of the subsidence features are deeper than they are broad. Nearly 59% of the subsidence features occur with overbur¬den less than 50 ft thick and 81% less than 100 ft thick. No subsidence features occur with overburden thicker than 450 ft (Fig. 9.1). Occurrence of subsidence incidents varies from imme¬diately to more than 100 years after mining (Fig. 9.2). In analyzing the characteristics of approximately 3000 chim¬ney subsidence features along the Colorado Front Range, Matheson and Eckert-Clift (1986) examined historical aerial photographs on 4- to 14-year intervals between 1937 and 1967 and found that the majority of observable surface subsidence features occurred within 30 to 40 years after mining. According to Gray et al. (1977), the most prevalent subsi¬dence features over abandoned mined land are sinkholes, with depths of more than 3 ft, and troughs or sags, usually less than 3 ft deep. Sinkholes are steep-sided pits, while troughs are shallow depressions much wider in area than sinkholes. A. SINKHOLE SUBSIDENCE A sinkhole is caused by the collapse of a mine roof that works its way upward. If it is not arrested during the process it will eventually reach the surface and emerge as a sinkhole. The process is governed by the thickness and character of the overburden, the width and height of the mine openings. Sinkholes are usually 3 to 20 ft deep and may be 2 to 40 ft in diameter, although most are fewer than 16 ft across (Gray et al., 1977; DuMontelle and Bauer, 1983). Newly formed sinkholes have steep sides with straight or bell-shaped walls. At times, they appear to be conical in profile with the apex upward. If the topsoil collapses, the top portion will widen to form an hour-glass shape. Sinkhole subsidence usually occurs over abandoned mines less than 165 ft deep (Hunt, 1979). Matheson and Eckert-Clift (1986) found that chimney sink¬holes are likely to occur when the ratio of overburden thickness to mining height (h/m) is less than 4 to 5. When h/m is between 5 and 10 to 11, the potential occurrence of chimney sinkholes decreases rapidly. When h/m is more than 10 to 11, less than 10% of the mine openings that collapse will induce sinkholes on the surface.

Hydrodynamic investigations in exploratory boreholes and grouting holes are conducted for the purpose of obtain¬ing information about the hydraulic properties of the hydrostratigraphic section to be intersected by the proposed underground workings. The information obtained from the investigations provides the basis for calculating the hydrau¬lic coefficients of fractured permeable rock, the dimensions of the anticipated grout isolation curtain(s) around the un¬derground workings, the number and location of grouting holes, the injection pressure modes, and also the volume(s) of grout that will be required (Anon., 1976, 1978). The following data on each aquifer are obtained from the investigations conducted in monitoring and grouting bore¬holes and the analysis of the results: 1) the top of each hydrostratigraphic unit, 2) the thickness of each unit, 3) the ground water fluid potential distribution in each unit, 4) the coefficient of permeability, 5) the piezoconductivity, 6) the fracture porosity, 7) the geometry of the fractures in the rock, 8) the elasticity-compressibility coefficient of the fractured rock, 9) the chemical composition of the ground water, 10) the direction of flow of the ground water, and 11) the expected inflow rate of water into the shaft, drift or tunnel. STG uses its DAU-3M type flowmeter to conduct in¬vestigations of directions of flow in vertical, inclined and horizontal drillholes. The DAU-6 instrument is used to de¬termine the direction of flow of ground water in each frac¬ture or fractured aquifer. Various singular and double DAU type packers are used for pumping and for injection studies (tests) and for flowmeter investigations. Normally the instruments enumerated above permit in¬vestigations to be conducted in each separate aquifer with¬out reinforcing the holes with casings. On the basis of these investigative data, both the hydraulic properties of unfractured rock and the hydraulic properties of the fractured rock are estimated. Dual porosity rocks require special attention because they tend to segregate the grout. 3.1 FLOWMETER INVESTIGATIONS IN BOREHOLES The STG flowmetric methodology is based on the mea¬surement of the ground water flow rate through the borehole by hydrostratigraphic interval after the disturbance of the hydrostatic equilibrium in the "hole-aquifer system" (after pumping or injecting). The relationship of the head changes to the discharge into or from a particular hydrostratigraphic unit obtained during the tests serve as the basis for calcu¬lating the hydraulic properties. Flowmetric investigations facilitate the determination of the number of aquifers, their depths, their thickness, the hydraulic properties of the fractured rock and the magnitude and direction of the flow of ground water. 3.1.1 FLOWMETER HARDWARE STG conducts flowmetric investigations in boreholes using its DAU-3M-108, DAU-3M-73, DAU-3M-57 and DAU-3M-44 instruments.' They have respective external diameters of 108, 73, 57 and 44 mm. The type of flowmeter selected for use depends on the borehole geometry and the technological scheme for carrying out the investigations. Boreholes with a drilling diameter of 76-93 mm are inves¬tigated with the DAU-3M-73 flowmeter; boreholes drilled by bits with a diameter of 112 mm and more are investi¬gated using the DAU-3M-108 flowmeter. The DAU-3M¬108 and DAU-3M-57 instruments are used for flowmetric investigations with a packer. 3.1.1.1 The Downhole Sensor The sensor design of the DAU-3M-73 hole flowmeter is shown in Fig. 2. The design of the DAU-3M-108 instru¬ment is similar to the design of the DAU-3M-73 instrument. The frame of the flowmeter sensor shown in Fig. 2 consists of a casing, an upper and lower centering mount and two rings to which the guiding rods are attached. The upper rods are built into the connector bushing; the lower rods are built into the coupling sleeve. The borehole cable is attached using a half-coupling, a packing ring and a constriction nut. Thus, the frame of the flowmeter sensor is made so that the free passage of water to the impeller is facilitated along with the necessary rigidity. The primary moving component of the flowmeter is the double-bladed impeller, which rotates on cobalt-tungsten pivots and agate thrust bearings. Special extended air cham¬bers protect the supports of the impeller from the action of the borehole fluid which may contain fibrous and abrasive particles. The air located in the chambers shields the sup¬ports from direct contact with the borehole fluid when the sensor operates in a borehole. The hollow casing of the impeller serves the function of a lower cap. The upper cap is attached to the casing using a threaded connector; it is affixed also with a lock-nut. Biotechnology has become a household word of the nineties, and it is expected to become as important in the next century as the computer is in the present. Numerous books and articles portray biotechnology developments as nothing less than a scientific revolution. Almost everywhere one looks new biotechnical breakthroughs are being reported that offer almost limitless opportunities to harness the force of living things to produce materials and manipulate their properties. Biotechnology has been broadly defined as any applications of biological organisms, systems, or processes to manufacturing and service industries. This seemingly new technology is, in fact, one of mankind's oldest scientific activities (Table l), which has been recently revolutionized by techniques of genetic engineering that arose out of basic research in biology, biochemistry, genetics, and information sciences. From fields as old as agriculture and medicine to those as new as monoclonal anti-bodies, transgenic plants, or biocomputers are encompassed by biotechnology. Like most human endeavors, industrial minerals play critical roles in biotechnology. In addition biotechnology holds real potential to improve extraction and beneficiation of certain industrial minerals themselves. BIOTECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW Companies using established biotechnical techniques make up large and diverse groups such as agriculture, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals. The massive US Pharmacopia (Anon., 1990a) provides detailed specifications for minerals used in medicines. Alumina, zirconia, apatite, and bioactive glass have seen service as implant materials (Williams, 1990) and new uses for minerals in health sciences are being actively researched. Agriculture produced $361 billion worth of food and drink during 1991 in the United States; organic chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and enzymes accounted for $68, $59, and $42 billion, respectively (Anon., 1992a). It is not possible to separate the contributions of industrial minerals to biotechnical products, but they represent a very large and rapidly growing new field of uses. The new biotechnology has nearly 300 small companies, plus 15 established companies with 742 biotechnology-related firms (Dibner, 1991b). Revenues exceeded $2 billion in 1990 and are expected to grow to $50 billion by 2000 (Anon., 1992c), with worldwide sales exceeding $100 billion (Burrill and Roberts, 1992). Federal research amounted to $3.4 billion in 1990 (Anon., 1992b). The United States is the world leader in biotechnology, but other countries have large, well-funded programs. Despite debate about safety, obstacles to new biotechnology products are declining (Embers, 1992, Gibbons, 1991). Fifteen biotechnology drugs valued at $1.2 billion (Thayer, 1991a) are on the market, and more than 100 are in various stages of testing (Edington, 1992). Many diagnostic tests are also in use or development (Demain, 1983, Anon., 1992). Large scale efforts to produce or transform important chemicals are also underway (Ng et al., 1983, Hinman, 1991), and research into geologic uses of biotechnology has begun. Much has been published about microbial mining, oil recovery, desulfurization, bioremediation, and other geologic aspects of biotechnology, but this chapter is the first attempt to explore interactions of biotechnology and industrial minerals. This chapter examines uses of minerals in biotechnology; how biotechnology can be used to discover, recover, and beneficiate industrial minerals; and speculates on some potential, but as yet untried uses. Definitions What exactly does the word biotechnology mean? Bud (1989) states that the first use of the term was by Karl Ereky in 1919 to cover the interaction of biology and technology, and in 1933 the term was used in Nature. After citing seven different definitions, Smith (1988) concludes that biotechnology is a series of enabling technologies involving practical applications of organisms or their subcellular components to manufacturing and service industries or to environmental management. Walker and Cox (1988) suggest a definition of "the practical applications of biological systems to the manufacturing and service industries and to the management of the environment." Primrose (1991) says that it is "the commercial exploitation of living organisms or their components." There is essentially an older broad use of the term and a new use. The US Office of Technology Assessment (Anon., 1984) uses a broad definition that includes any technique that uses living organisms (or parts of organisms) to make or modify products, to improve plants or animals, or to develop micro-organisms for specific uses. Definitions are different, but they all have several fundamental elements that include the control, management, or manipulation of living things for commercial, industrial, or useful ends. While such a definition encompasses all of agriculture in practice the "new" biotechnology is restricted to processes involving microorganisms-plant and animal cells, or enzymes. Many consider biotechnology to be recent, but it is one of our oldest technologies as evidenced by the prehistoric origin of brewing, cheese-making, and other techniques. [Table 1] gives some of the important developments in the history of biotechnology. Smith (1988) breaks down historical developments of biotechnology into four phases: 1) prehistoric with no understanding of underlying processes; 2) nonsterile processes; 3) sterile processes after 1940; and 4) genetic and recombinant DNA technology deliberate design of special organisms or processes.

INTRODUCTION Radcont is a program designed by the author of this paper for the industry to use as an instrument for radiation contamination evaluation and ventilation planning system. Radiation in mines are associated with the mining of gold and gold bearing minerals, as uranium and thorium is incorporated in the mining of these minerals. Radiation contamination in South African mines is not a new concept as it was investigated by the Chamber of Mines in the early 1960's and found not to be hazardous at the time. Since some of our mines export scrap metal to customers abroad, it came to light (1991) that some of the scrap metal was radioactive. The authority that oversees the nuclear aspects in South Africa is the Council for Nuclear Safety (CNS). They investigated these matters and found that the mines needed further information regarding radioactive material and the handling of these contaminated materials. As the various mines were licensed (with various conditions incorporated) thereafter, the mines had to do their own investigations as to what extent their properties (Surface and underground) were radioactively contaminated. Some mines were found to be highly contaminated over the years of operation and controlling conditions were installed and measures installed to reduce the contamination levels. One of the conditions when issuing a licence by the Council for Nuclear Safety (CNS), is that a screening survey be carried out to determine the radiation exposure levels and corrective action to be taken if necessary. These surveys must be done by a person trained in the required procedures for such a survey. The person must also measure the risk correctly and assess the results properly. In such a survey, the internal and external exposure levels must be determined to assess the total exposure of persons working in those conditions and take appropriate action if necessary. When doing such a survey, hundreds and more likely, thou- sands of data points are recorded. In order to assess the data recorded, various integrated and difficult calculations need to be made, and takes up enormous amounts of time. (This excludes the interpretation of the results ) The following explanation of the program shows the different parts of such a survey assessment calculations to be done. The paper details the program layout and the different sub- sections within the primary program. It must be stated that the program, as with any other program, is as accurate as the data inserted into the data base. The program and details thereof are given under the following headings: 1. TOTAL EFFECTIVE DOSAGE WITH REGARDS TO: • GME required gravimetric results obtained (mg/m3) • Thick layer or total contamination measured (Bq/m2) • Dry condition surveys with dust loads taken as a Standard l0mg/m3 • Wet conditions survey with dust loads taken as l mg/m3 • Airborne long lived alpha and beta activities as determined by analysis in Bg/m3 • LTD (Thermoluminescent Dosimeter). Results as obtained from the SABS (South African Buro of Standards) are recorded in this section for each month of the year for each individual worker. An average dose is then determined at the end of the year. • Bucket measurements as recorded. • Smear samples (Loose contamination). As determined by Electra or by analysis • Occupational factors for Metallurgical and Engineering occupations in and around the Metallurgical facilities of your mine. • All underground dosage determination and calculations. The rapid decay and disfiguring of stone monuments in urban and desert rural areas has challenged conservators to protect stone surfaces from premature decay. They attempt to halt the natural process of stone decay and possibly to restore the original strength lost mostly by chemical weathering and the loss of binding cement. Ageneral solution is not possible because the physical and chemical characteristics must be considered for different stone types. The failures of stone preservation and restoration are greater in number than the cures. The need for repair of stone decay goes back to evidence of Roman replacement of decaying stone. The presence of excess water in buildings has long been recognized. Moisture tends to enter masonry from air in humid climates, a most important but often underrated factor (Fig. 1) suggesting that sealing should be the answer. Undesirable staining and efflorescence result in accelerated scaling. Today, the great variety of chemicals available to the modem conservator for sealing. consolidating, or hardening stone fall into two very different categories: surface sealers and penetrating stone consolidants, or a combination of both. SEALERS Sealers develop a tight, impervious skin which prevents access of moisture. Surface sealing has saved monuments from decay by eliminating the access of atmospheric humidity. Pressure tends to develop behind the stone surface by moisture escape. Efflorescence, crystal growth action, and freezing can cause considerable spalling (Anderegg, 1949). Flaking results when moisture is trapped behind the sealed surface. Yellowing and blotchiness are also frequently observed. The following sealants are in common use today: linseed oil, paraffin, silicone, urethane, acrylate, and animal blood on stone and adobe. Extensive cracking and yellowing has resulted soon after application. In the past many such treatments have created more problems than cures: 1. Linseed oil and paraffin have been in use for centuries. Embrittlement and yellowing occur rapidly because these are readily attacked by solar ultraviolet radiation. 2. Animal blood as paint has temporarily waterproofed adobe mud and stone masonry. The origin of blood paint has a religious background rooted in the Phoenician and Hebrew cultures. Instant water soluble dried blood can substitute for fresh blood. Winkler (1956) described the history and technique of the use of blood. 3. Silicones have proven very effective and are long lasting. In contrast, acrylates, urethane, and styrene are generally rapidly attacked by UV radiation (Clark et al., 1975). Sealing of Different Rock Types Granitic rocks have a natural porosity traced to 4.5% contraction of quartz, during cooling of the parent magma, compared with only 2% contraction of all other minerals; protection against the hygric forces may require waterproofing of granite in some in- stances. The Egyptian granite obelisk in London is an example. Soon after its relocation from Egypt to London, Cleopatra's Needle was treated, in 1879, with a mixture of Damar resin and wax dissolved in clear petroleum spirit; surface scaling became evident after half a year of exposure to the humid London atmosphere. The treatment of the ancient granite monument from Egypt has denied access of high relative humidity (RH) in London to the trapped salts inherited from the Egyptian desert and has protected the monument from decay (Burgess and Schaffer, 1952). The sister obelisk set up in Central Park, New York City, has fared less favorably because similar treatment was done too late, only after the salts hydrated and hundreds of kilograms of scalings disfigured the obelisk surface (Winkler, 1980). Surface coating of other common stones may be needed. Crystalline marble absorbs moisture from high RH atmospheres: dilation may ensue when curtain panels bow as the moisture starts to expand during daily heating-cooling cycles. A good sealer may prevent the moisture influx provided that no moisture can enter from the inside of the building. Limestones, dolomites and all carbonate rocks are subject to dissolution attack by rainwater, especially in areas where acid rain prevails (Fig. 2). The interaction of sulfates in the atmosphere with the stone can be halted by waterproofing to avoid the formation of soft and more soluble gypsum. The stone surface attack can be diminished if nearly insoluble Ca-sulfite crusts can form, instead of Ca-sulfate. Replacement of fluorite or barium compounds at the stone surface acts as a hardener, rather than a sealant. Sandstones have generally high porosity and rapid water travel can occur along unexpected routes and from any direction. Any surface sealing may do more damage by scaling and bursting than if the stone is left without treatment. Sealing of sandstones is therefore not advised at any time. Testing the efficiency of sealants: Several authors discuss waterproofing materials, silicones, urethanes, acrylates and stearates, as to their water absorption, spreading rates of water on the treated surface, water vapor transmission, resistance to efflorescence, and general appearance (Clark et al., 1975). De Castro (1983) measured the angle of contact of a microdrop (0.004 cm3) on a stone surface as characteristic of the wettability. The design of an ore-processing plant requires a high degree of cooperation among the geological, mining and metallurgical engineers. The purposes of this section are to provide mill design information most commonly needed by the mine planners and management, and to summarize the kinds of information that must be supplied to the mill designer to enable him to provide a suitable plant. 28.1-BASIS OF DESIGN NORMAN WEISS 28.1.1-SIZE OF PROJECT The size of the project generally is expressed in tons of ore milled per day, but company policies differ widely in this respect, a few adhering to this set figure but many expecting the design capacity to be liberal. To some companies that follow the latter practice a 25,000-tpd milling plant that cannot reach 30,000 or 35,000 tpd without major additions is a disappointment. The engineers responsible for planning the operation must know what is intended. Equally important are operating schedules, particularly the number of operating days per week and shifts per day for ore delivery, crushing, grinding and processing. Hours per shift also are an important factor in design, particularly in the case of ore delivery, and the percentage lost time expected for maintenance, cleanup, inspection, preventive maintenance shutdowns, and many others, has to be taken into account. Frequently, the ore deposit will vary in hardness and grade to such a degree that the capacity of the mill will vary widely from year to year and cannot be expressed as a fixed figure. but rather as an average over a calculable period, such as 10 yr, or as a specific daily capacity over the first 2 yr, next 4 yr, etc., or some similar projection. A good example of this kind of situation is Asarco's Mission operation 15 mi southwest of Tucson, Ariz., described by Weiss and Vincent.' where the major rock types differed widely in hardness, so that a change in the proportion of these types in the mill feed could have imposed difficult design problems if a constant tonnage rate had been expected. 28.1.2-EXPECTED LIFE The life of a mining operation depends upon the size of the deposit and the rate of mining. The latter is a policy decision based on an economic analysis which, in turn, is based on many factors.' From the point of view of mill planning, the estimated life of the operation determines many criteria and affects many decisions on strength of structures and degree of protection of men and materials, the quality of the materials-handling and process machinery, the type of delivery systems for ore to the mill and concentrates to the smelter or market, and many others. Costly installations that may be excellent investments for a 20-yr project may be wasteful for a 5-yr operation. An example is the comparison of different methods of crushing or grinding. Take single- vs. multiple-stage grinding-the former may be found more economical for a 5-yr operation, and the other, more costly, method more economical for a 15 to 20-vi- life.

INTRODUCTION In the past three decades, world trade has grown from less than $100 billion per year in the years following World War 11 to slightly more than $300 billion in 1970 and over $2,000 billion in the early 1980s. Adjusted for inflation, the real growth of world trade in 1972 dollars increased from less than $175 billion per year in the early 1950s to slightly more than $342 billion in 1970 and almost $700 billion per year by the early 1980s. Thus trade as a whole has increased a little more than twofold in real terms in the past decade." Mineral commodities constituted approximately 20% of the value of total world trade in 1970, and significantly more than that proportion in terms of physical volume. By 1980, de- spite rapidly rising petroleum prices, mineral commodities accounted for roughly 18% of the total value of world trade. Crude oil alone ac- counted for about 16%, making it the single most important commodity in international trade. The worldwide recession of 198 1- 1983 brought a dramatic decline in both volume and price of crude oil, shrinking the impact of mineral commodities to roughly 10% of the value of total exports, worldwide, in 1982- 1983. The decline of mineral commodities as a pro- portion of the value of world trade in the decade 1970- 1980 is due largely to the increasing importance of manufactured goods and consumer products such as automobiles and electronic items. During this period, mineral commodity trade expanded roughly sixfold in terms of current dollars to an estimated $350 to 360 billion in 1980. This was equivalent to doubling the real value of mineral commodities in international trade in the 1970- 1980 period in constant dollars. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has expanded the traditional definition of mineral commodities to include semifinished products such as iron and steel (in addition to iron ore), refined metals such as copper, lead, zinc, aluminum, and tin, concentrates, scrap, and petroleum products. Since large quantities of essentially mineral derivatives travel in this form, it is reasonable to use these expanded definitions in stating the role of minerals in world trade. Thus minerals in world trade comprise 30 to 33% of total export trade in all commodities during the period 1976- 1980 (see Table 1.3.1). In addition, the U.S. Bureau of Mines estimates the value of all mineral commodities consumed in the world (at the national level) and compares this value to total worldwide commodity consumption. By this system, mineral commodities range from 30 to 40% of all commodities consumed each year in all countries during the period 1976- 1980 (see Table 1.3.2). The growth in export trade in mineral commodities by commodity group is shown for the period 1976-1980 in Table 1.3.3. These data parallel the swings in worldwide economic activity during the same time period. "Diesel particulate matter (DPM) remains a health concern in many underground metal/nonmetal mines, and has been regulated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration since 2002. While the NIOSH 5040 standard method for DPM monitoring is required to demonstrate regulatory compliance, the FLIR Airtec DPM Monitor can serve as complementary engineering tool. It is a handheld instrument that offers near real-time measurements. As part of an ongoing field study, the Airtec has been used to survey elemental carbon concentrations (a proxy for DPM) in an underground stone mine. Via “spot-checking” and more prolonged area monitoring, this effort was aimed at determining spatial and temporal DPM variation in several key locations. INTRODUCTION Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is the solid fraction of the exhaust emissions from a diesel engine. It is largely made up of elemental and organic carbon (EC and OC, respectively), which can be measured as proxies for estimating mass concentrations of DPM. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) considers DPM to be a health hazard and potential carcinogen [1]. It is believed to cause and/or exacerbate respiratory illness upon inhalation, deposition, and retention in lung tissue [2]. Since DPM exists in both the micro- and nano-particulate ranges, it can surpass typical auto-immuno defense mechanisms that keep larger particles out of the respiratory system [2]. Relative to other occupations, the DPM exposure potential for underground miners is high because these individuals work in enclosed environments where diesel powered equipment is frequently used [3,4]. A variety of engineering and administrative controls have been devised to reduce DPM exposures in underground mines, and increased airflow is often a key component of control strategies. In large-opening mines, which are most common in the metal/nonmetal sector, DPM abatement via increased ventilation can be especially complex due to moving and controlling the large air quantities [5]. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has regulated DPM exposure in metal/nonmetal mines since 2002. The final rule limits personal exposure to total carbon (TC, which is the sum of EC and OC) to an eight-hour time weighted average (TWA) of 160 µg/m3. To demonstrate compliance, operators must use the NIOSH 5040 Method [6]. However, the Airtec DPM Monitor (FLIR Systems, Inc., Nashua, NH) was developed as an engineering tool to provide near real-time measurements of both EC and TC for tracking personal exposures [7]. The portable Airtec works by capturing DPM on a filter and successively measuring laser extinction on the filter as DPM accumulates; the EC fraction of the DPM is dark, and so as it accumulates the filter becomes darker and absorbs more laser light [8]. The laser extinction value is directly correlated to EC, but since EC and TC are generally observed in consistent proportions (i.e., TC = EC*1.3), the Airtec is also programmed to display TC as a TWA [9]. There have been multiple studies conducted to validate the Airtec and the instrument has been adopted by some mine operators as a tool for their health and safety programs [3,8]."

istorical records suggest that the gathering of geologic information in China began more than 2,000 years ago. Modern-day geological work in the nation started in the early part of this century but it progressed rather slowly. Before the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC), there were only 800 people engaged in geological work and only 200 trained geologists among them. According to Minerals and Mining in China, many accomplishments were achieved within China's mining industry during the period of years between 1949, the founding of modern China, and 1997. These include: ? The number of types of minerals with verified reserves increased from 18 (pre-Liberation) to 162 (today). ? Mineral deposit localities grew from 5,123 (pre-Liberation) to nearly 200,000 (today). Of these 200,000 localities, more than three-quarters have verified mineral reserves. ? Minerals extraction and processing contribute to 31 % of the total industrial output value of China (today). ? Regional geological maps at a scale of 1:1,000,000 covering the entire country have been completed, while regional geological and hydrogeological maps at a scale of 1:200,000 covering two-thirds of the country have also been finished (today). ? Before 1949, China was regarded as an oil-poor country. Since the 1950s, China has developed an extensive petrochemical industry. It is largely government-owned except for a limited number of joint ventures. The central government maintains active control over China's most productive fields, including the Daqing field in the Songliao Basin of northeastern China and the Shengli and Liaohe fields in the Bohai Basin of northeastern China. ? Employment in the minerals industry engaged in geological exploration increased from 800 (pre-Liberation) to 1 million (early this decade). The new report provides an overview of the current political and economic situation in China and discusses how this affects the minerals industry. China is in transition between a socialist planned economy and a market economy. This makes it difficult for non-Chinese to keep track of developments. Minerals and Mining in China is divided into 14 chapters that contain detailed statistics, including data on the geographical location and extent of known mineral reserves, production rates, local technical personnel, imports and exports. The report reveals which companies are already active in the area by profiling 50 major investment projects in China's metals and minerals industry. According to its author, China possesses one of the world's largest mining industries, ranking among the leading producers of several metallic and nonmetallic resources. The Chinese mining industry is extraordinarily complex. It has evolved into an overwhelmingly large bureaucracy that was, until the 1980s, shrouded from and misunderstood by the international community. To date, more than 160 types of minerals have been discovered in China. But a significant portion of the minerals and energy base remains largely unidentified and evaluated. And despite China's large reserves of mineral resources, with a population of more than 1.2 billion people, the country ranks among the lowest in the world in terms of proven reserves per capita. In addition, mining recovery rates in China average about 50%, significantly

Roof bolter operators may be exposed to high respirable dust concentrations on continuous miner sections with blowing face ventilation when bolting is performed downwind of the continuous miner. One solution to reduce the high respirable dust concentrations is to use a canopy air curtain (CAC) to deliver clean air from a filtered blower fan directly to the bolter operators under the canopies. The influence of CAC installation in the airflow and dust dispersion around the location of the roof bolter operator can be evaluated by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This study, performed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), considers two scenarios: (1) a roof bolting machine in the center of the entry for installation of the fifth row of bolts from the face, and (2) a roof bolting machine positioned close to the face for the installation of the last row of bolts. In both scenarios, the bolting machine is placed in an environment which contains 6.0 mg/m3 of respirable dust and is ventilated by a blowing curtain with 3,000 cfm (1.42 m3/s) of air. This environment is used to simulate the roof bolter machine operating downstream of a continuous mining machine. Two operation positions are simulated at the same bolting location: dual drill heads in the inward position for two inside bolts; and dual drill heads in the outward position for two outside bolts. The influence of the CAC on airflows and dust dispersion is evaluated with the CAC operating at 250 cfm (0.12 m3/s). INTRODUCTION Roof bolting machines are used to drill bolt holes into the roof of an underground mine at specified patterns and to install roof bolts to secure the roof from falling. At times, the roof bolting machine is also used to install rib bolts; however, only the roof bolting operation was considered in this simulation. Though the roof bolting operation drastically improved the safety of miners from roof falls, some roof bolter operators are experiencing health problems associated with respirable dust. Based on recent statistics [1], following a low point in the late 1990s where the prevalence of coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP) in miners with 25 years or more tenure was approximately 5%, CWP now exceeds 10% for miners with 25 years or more of tenure. In central Appalachia (Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia), 20.6% of long-tenured miners have CWP and 4.5% have progressive massive fibrosis, the most severe form of CWP. CWP, also known as black lung, is an occupational respiratory disease that has no cure and can ultimately be fatal. The only way to prevent the incidence of black lung is to eliminate miners’ exposure to respirable coal mine dust. Current U.S. regulations require that the overall respirable dust concentration to be 1.5 mg/m3 or less for a full-shift sampling if respirable quartz is not present; otherwise, the standard is 10 divided by the percent quartz (not to exceed the 1.5 mg/m3 respirable dust standard) [2, 3].

Zimbabwe The Republic of Zimbabwe is situated in south central Africa and north of the Tropic of Capricorn. The country is land-locked, bounded on the north by Zambia, on the south by the Republic of South Africa, on the east by Mozambique and on the southwest by Botswana. Nearly 400,000 sq km in area, Zimbabwe is bigger than both France and Spain and nearly three times the size of England. The outstanding physical feature is the central plateau, known as the highveld, which is about 650 km long and 80 km wide at an elevation of +1,200 m, and on which the Jena Mines is located. Because of its elevation and inland position, Zimbabwe's climate is temperate, generally drier and cooler than is normally expected in the tropics. Zimbabwe's population is in excess of 10 million. English is the official language, with Ndebele and Shona being the main ethnic languages. About one million people live in Greater Harare, the capital city. The basic unit of currency is the Zimbabwe dollar, which has depreciated substantially over the past few years. Currently (November, 1995), the exchange rate is $US 1.00 = $Zim 9.00, compared with $US 1 .OO = $Zim 2.50 in 1991. Project Area The Jena Mines Complex is situated in central Zimbabwe (Figure 1), in the Silobela area of the lower Gweru River valley. The mine site is 270 km from Harare by paved and gravel road. The Jena Mines property consists of a single rectangular (8 km by 5 km) shaped mining lease with an area of approximately 40 sq km (Figure 2). Annual average precipitation is 720 mm falling in the summer months between October and April. Mean daily maximum temperature is 24°C in October and mean minimum is 14°C in July. The southern parts of Zimbabwe have experienced drought conditions over the past four years which has affected water and power supplies. The countryside in the Jena area is generally low relief with a gentle slope to the northwest. The mine site topography is flat with an average elevation of 1,210 m. Zimbabwe Mining Industry Zimbabwe has a long mining tradition, particularly for gold. In the 1,200 years preceding European colonization, it is estimated that about 4,000 ancient mines produced between 600 and 800 tonnes of gold. Since the turn of the century more than 1,700 tonnes of gold have been produced. An excellent infrastructure has developed to support the mining industry. This includes a well- maintained system of paved roads, railway links to major mining areas, an electricity grid covering most of the country, and numerous industries manufacturing a wide range of mining supplies. Jena History The claims in the Jena Mines area are among the earliest registered in Zimbabwe. The gold potential was easily recognized because of extensive ancient (pre-European) workings. European trading beads from the 14th Century have been recovered from anthills in the mine area. Development of the Jena Mines commenced in 1898 and several mines have operated intermittently over the past 90 years. A large number of minerals and chemicals (Table 1), some mineral-derived, are used in the treatment of both potable water and domestic sewage waste water and solids (Anon., 1990). In water treatment there are ten principal process uses as shown in Table 2 (Anon., 1990), which also lists the major chemicals in each process. Since lime (calcium oxide, calcium hydroxide, and dolomitic lime) is the largest chemical (by tonnage) used in water treatment, this chapter will deal primarily with this product. Note that it is included in five of the process uses shown in Table 2, and that indirectly it is also used in at least one other category (taste and odor control, where lime is used with potassium permanganate to provide optimum pH condition). POTABLE WATER TREATMENT Water Softening The biggest use for lime in water treatment involves water softening, where it serves to reduce carbonate hardness caused by dissolved bicarbonate and carbonate compounds. Currently there are more than 1000 domestic water softening plants (Table 3) located in most sections of the country, but particularly in Ohio, other midwestern states, Florida, and Texas, where limestone bedrock abounds (Anon., 1990). Among the other uses for lime in water treatment are coagulation, disinfection, and removal of heavy metals due to high pH softening, removal of certain radioactive and organic compounds and fluorides, neutralization of acidic water, removal of silica, particularly with dolomitic lime, and removal of color. Most of the above advantages accompany water softening, although at some plants lime is used specifically for one purpose, such as silica removal with dolomitic lime, minimizing pipeline corrosion by addition of lime to correct an aggressive water, and others. Hardness in water comprises two types - carbonate hardness, caused by dissolved calcium and magnesium carbonates and bi- carbonates, and non-carbonate hardness caused by dissolved non- carbonate salts, particularly calcium sulfate, calcium chloride, magnesium sulfate, and magnesium chloride. Total hardness is the sum of the carbonate hardness and non-carbonate hardness. Waters are classified as soft (0 to 75 mg/L as CaCO,), moderate (75 to 150 mg/L), hard (150 to 300 mg/L), and very hard (above 300 mg/L). Most water plants strive to reduce total hardness to about 100 mg/L, although in recent years the tendency in some cities has been to allow a little higher value in order to reduce both chemical costs and the amount of water softening sludges produced. There are four basic types of softening plants: lime softening, primarily to reduce carbonate hardness; lime-soda softening, for reduction of both types of hardness (in some plants caustic soda is used in place of soda ash, but it is more costly); split lime-zeolite, where a base exchange mineral is employed in place of soda ash (this system also requires salt [sodium chloride] to regenerate the zeolite mineral); and finally zeolite softening, which is generally used in small systems for private houses and small municipalities. Principal disadvantages of the latter system are its relatively high cost and the salt requirement, which introduces considerable quantities of soluble salts into the waste water discharge system.

"Federal regulations require refuge alternatives (RAs) in underground coal mines to sustain life for 96 hours while maintaining an apparent temperature (AT) below 35°C (95°F). NIOSH research has shown that heat and humidity buildup is a major concern with RAs because they have a limited ability to dissipate heat, and high internal air temperature and relative humidity (RH) may expose occupants to heat stress. The heat transfer process within and surrounding an RA is very complex and is not easily defined analytically nor experimentally. To investigate heat and humidity buildup in RAs, NIOSH conducted multiple in-mine 96-hour tests on a 6-person metal-type RA, a 23-person tent-type RA, and a 10-person tent-type RA. The test results show that when moisture was introduced into the tests to represent perspiration and respiration from miners (wet tests), the average measured internal air temperature at midheight increased by 7.7°C, 9.4°C, and 10.5°C, and the RH approached 95%, 94%, and 88%, respectively. For the dry tests when no moisture was introduced, the average internal temperature increased by 8.4°C, 10.3°C, and 12.6°C, respectively. INTRODUCTION If an accident occurs in an underground coal mine, miners who cannot escape from the mine can enter an RA for protection from adverse conditions, such as high carbon monoxide levels. One of the main concerns with the use of mobile RAs is the thermal environment inside the RA. The metabolic heat of the occupants and the heat released by the CO2 scrubbing system will cause the interior air temperature to increase. Moreover, the humidity within the RA will increase through occupants’ respiration and perspiration and from the chemical reaction within the CO2 scrubbing system. The internal thermal conditions can subject miners to heat stress, which can lead to heat exhaustion, heat stroke, or even death depending on duration and magnitude of exposure. MSHA regulations require that RAs must be designed to ensure that the internal apparent temperature does not exceed 35°C (95°F) when the RA is fully occupied [1]. Apparent temperature (AT) is a temperature-humidity metric for the perceived temperature caused by the combined effects of air temperature, relative humidity (RH), and wind speed. It is used to assess the perception of indoor temperatures when workplaces are not sufficiently heated, cooled, or insulated to provide comfortable or healthy conditions. Before a mobile RA can be deployed at an underground mine for emergency usage, it must be tested to show that its internal AT when fully occupied will not exceed the 35°C (95°F) limit. For practical reasons, RA manufacturers usually conduct their tests at above-ground test facilities. To investigate RA thermal response in an in-mine environment, NIOSH conducted multiple 96-hour tests on a 6-person metal-type RA, a 23-person tent-type RA, and a 10-person tent-type RA in its underground coal mine facility. The work described in this paper could be used by RA manufacturers to determine a final temperature rise based solely on dry and time-reduced testing."

About Cominco Only the original Broken Hill zinc deposit in Australia is larger than Cominco's Red Dog deposit. Indeed, the third largest zinc deposit in the world is Cominco's own Sullivan mine in British Columbia. The production plan at Red Dog is based on mining 1.9 Mt/a (2.1 million stpy) or ore, to produce 635 kt (700,000 st) of zinc and lead concentrates. At full production, Red Dog will be the largest zinc mine in the Western world. It will also be one of the lowest cost producers in the Western world. And Red Dog will be one of the first major hardrock mines to operate in Alaska in modern times. The Red Dog project will be the third and largest of Cominco's Arctic mining developments in the past 13 years. The company's Black Angel mine in Greenland started up in 1973. And the Polaris mine, high in the Canadian Arctic, began production in 1982. Red Dog is one of the world's great mineral deposits. It is a unique combination of large size, high grade, and a waste-to-ore ratio less than 1:1. The present mineral reserve (Table 1) is estimated to be 77 Mt (85 million st), at a grade of 17.1% zinc, 5% lead, and 82 g/t (2.4 oz per st) of silver. Mine life is estimated at nearly 50 years. Cominco is the largest producer of lead and zinc in the Western world. Cominco's smelter in southern British Columbia is the largest lead and zinc plant in the west. Cominco also produces copper, steel, tin, gold and silver, along with potash, ammonia, urea, and phosphate fertilizers. But Cominco's major products are lead and zinc. At present, Cominco produces more than 10% of the Western world's needs for these metals. Background-Red Dog The Red Dog mineral deposit is located in northwestern Alaska, about 960 km (600 miles) by air from Anchorage, Alaska's largest city. The Red Dog region is home to more than 5000 people living in 11 villages. The largest village is Kotzebue, with a population of about 2500. The village is located about 144 km (90 miles) southwest of the mine. The country around Red Dog features rolling hills, leading into mountains to the north and east. The deposit, at an elevation of 305 m (1000 ft), is in permafrost. But the area is not nearly as cold as that encountered in the Canadian Arctic, or on Alaska's North Slope. At Red Dog, the permafrost is relatively fragile. It can be thawed fairly easily, a factor in engineering designs. Red Dog Creek flows through the mineral deposit. One of the natural phenomena at Red Dog is the presence of significant heavy metal contamination in the creek. This has eliminated all fish in the vicinity of the deposit. The contamination, and resulting mineral stain, led to the discovery of Red Dog. The staining is caused by rain and snowmelt. This leaches the heavy metals from the mineral zone, which comes right to the surface in many places. As mining progresses, this surface mantle will be removed. This will

The oil and gas drilling industry is the largest user of "functional" industrial minerals for well drilling and completion. (Functional industrial minerals can be defined as those used for performance characteristics rather than composition.) This industry's use of industrial minerals involves complex mining, processing, and distribution of products. The cost of these products at the well site reflects the complexity of distribution to typically remote locations and the cost of service. Table 1 illustrates the use of functional industrial minerals by the drilling industry. The total tonnage shown is almost 2 1/2 times larger than the 3.3 Mt (3.6 million st) of kaolin used by the paper industry for filling and coating, another major use for functional industrial minerals. Drilling fluids are an indispensible part of a drilling operation. These fluids perform several functions simultaneously. They cool and lubricate the drill bit, remove formation cuttings, increase the specific gravity of the fluid to counteract formation fluid pressures, provide a filter cake on the wall of the drill hole to prevent drilling fluid loss to the formation, protect the porosity of producing zones, and prevent reaction of the formation or formation fluids with the drilling mud. When porosity of a formation exceeds the ability of the drilling fluid to form a wall cake, it is referred to as lost circulation. Because these fluids are being constantly formulated for changing formation conditions, they require a skilled technician or drilling mud engineer on the site at all times. Drilling fluids are composed of oil or water as the liquid phase, and industrial mineral products and chemicals to control chemical and physical properties. The basic function of viscosity and suspension result from the use of gelling clays and chemical and mineral dispersants; specific gravity of the mud is adjusted with mineral weighting agents; filtration control is maintained by clays and various natural and synthetic polymers; platey minerals and scrap products are used for controlling lost circulation in porous or fractured zones; salts are added to the mud to inhibit shale and clay swelling; chemicals are added for pH adjustment, prevention of corrosion, and as scavengers for formation fluid components. Because of the clay component, drilling muds have rheological properties different from conventional fluids, behaving as Bingham plastic fluids as opposed to the Newtonian behavior of water and oil. Newtonian fluids will begin to flow with the application of any force, however small. Bingham plastic fluids require a finite force or shear stress (yield value) before flow begins. Thixotropy is another property of clay-based drilling fluids. At rest they form a gel structure that suspends the weighting agents and rock cuttings. These gels break down when a finite force is applied and circulation is restored. At the bit where shear rates are the greatest, the viscosity or resistance to flow decreases, so hydraulic pressures and pumping costs are minimized. A drilling rig provides a means of rotating a hollow pipe attached to a cutting bit. A mud pit or tank is used for mixing the drilling mud and its components. I was very glad to see an article on alkali-silica reactivity of concrete aggregate in Mining Engineering. It is a topic that should be reexamined every 45 or 50 years. The last paper (that I am aware of) that examined this topic in Mining Engineering was Rexford (1950), who, at the time, was chief of the Petrography Section, South Pacific Division Laboratory, Corps of Engineers, Los Angeles, CA. The paper was presented at the AIME meeting in Los Angeles in October 1948. Professor Leming's discussion generally reflects the current state-of-the-art; but it provides no references for more detailed information. I wrote a paper titled "How to avoid excessive expansion of concrete due to alkali-aggregate reaction," which was included in the Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Alkali-Aggregate Reactions in Hydroelectric Plants and Dams (Mather, 1995). In it, I emphasized that it was the hydroxide ion (not the alkali ion) that caused the pore fluid in the concrete to dissolve reactive silica, producing alkali-silica gel capable of taking up water, thereby, causing swelling and rupturing of the concrete. Excessive expansion will not occur unless there is a sufficient amount of potentially expansive alkali-silica reaction product and water. However, this will not occur unless there is a sufficient quantity of reactive aggregate and unless there is a mechanism by which the pH of the pore fluid can get well above the normal value of about 12.6. In many cases it is sufficient that the cementitious medium not only contains portland cement but also contains ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS) or a pozzolan such as fly ash, silica fume, metakaolin, volcanic glass or calcined shale - any of which may have been included for economic reasons. If, however, the person selecting the ingredients for concrete knows that the aggregate is reactive (with no alternate nonreactive aggregate available) and if the person knows that the only available portland cement has a high alkali content (i.e., more than 0.6% Na2O.; Na2e = % Na20 + 0.658 x % K20), then it becomes irresponsible not to establish what reasonable precaution one should take. Professor Leming suggests using one of the following: 30% Class F fly ash, 50% GGBFS or 7% to 10% silica fume. My view is that one should prepare test specimens with the cement and aggregate to be used and then expose these both with and without at least two dosages of each of the various alternative materials (slag, pozzolan and lithium salts), so that the required dosage. to control the expansion is established. Then, economic considerations can dictate the final selection. I would point out to the author that GGBFS is not a pozzolan and is not an admixture, but, rather, it is a latent hydraulic cement. An admixture is, by definition, a material other than hydraulic cement. I commend him for suggesting that aggregate producers should become more active in knowing about the reactivity of their products and the precautions needed to permit those products to be safely used in concrete.

The purpose of this paper is to present a viable method of reinforcing rock pillars by utilizing fully grouted reinforcing steel and a cement - fly ash mortar. Although the fully bonded bolt concept is not new as exemplified .by the present widespread use of resin bolts within United States mines and by the use of cement grouted reinforcing used as back pins in the Kiruna Iron Ore Mine in northern Sweden, (1)(2) the method of stabilizing mine pillars with fully bonded reinforcing is new. This method, called the "grout-rebar system", was first incorporated at St. Joe Minerals Corporation's Fletcher Mine in December of 1972. The system was used on an emergency basis before extensive research on the mechanics of the system could be completed. Since December of 1972, however, approximately 206 pillars have been reinforced at Fletcher and the system is currently being used on a regular basis at two other St. Joe mines and at two competitor mines in the area. Basically, this paper is a case study of the efforts, research and results of utilizing the grout-rebar system, on a selective basis, at the Fletcher Mine. In addition to information about the system, this paper will explain in detail the three rock mechanics instruments developed by St. Joe and used to measure and monitor rock movement to validate the grout-rebar system.
