Analytical models for transient groundwater phenomena, such as those of Theis, Cooper, and Jacob, are important but often limited tools for aquifer evaluation and drawdown prediction. Most were developed using simplifying assumptions which compromise their treatment of complex boundaries and most also contain functions that are mathematically complex and difficult to solve explicitly. Examples of such functions are the Bessel functions, the exponential integral, and similar well functions for leaky confined and water table aquifers. This paper describes the joint use of simple numerical techniques and numerical approximations of these functions to extend many analytical models beyond their conventional applications. The enhanced analytical methods represent many hydrologic problems more easily and realistically, permit a wider range of application, and often provide insight into the response of pumped groundwater systems without the need to resort to more complex numerical flow models. Use of the enhanced analytical methods usually requires the use of microcomputers due to the large number of computations. Examples presented here are the development and extension of type curves and the determination of drawdown distributions.

Laboratory and pilot plant investigations have indicated that copper recoveries of 50% can be achieved with fine grinding and flotation of a copper reverberatory furnace slag, Microscopic and microprobe studies indicate that the recoverable copper is in the form of matte, chalcocite, and metallic copper; the percentage of copper in particles appearing to be copper-free was from 0.23 - 0.54%.

Soft ground tunneling poses major challenges to the underground industry. Most of soft ground tunnels are in highly urbanized areas, often include limited cover, and include a strong trend of increasing diameters. Therefore, soft ground tunneling works can sometimes cause inevitable ground movements and settlements that may lead to damages to adjacent buildings, roads, structures or utilities; many of these being “lifeline” infrastructure assets. Tunneling operations, Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) advance rates, and face pressure control can significantly increase or decrease such risks, depending on how well the TBM and operational parameters are applied to the ground conditions. Additionally, the risks of impacting existing infrastructure are heightened in many parts of North America because of cobbles and boulders. To date there is no standardized guideline that determines appropriate tunneling rates nor operator’s guidelines, to ensure safe tunnelling in soft ground. The paper analyzes tunneling records from completed soft ground tunnels to determine a relation between ground conditions, tunnel cover, TBM cutters maintenance and TBM advance rates. The records are discussed to draw several mitigation measures to be adopted during tunnelling, to reduce risks of settlements, over excavation or sinkholes.

U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) studies show that 43.5% of surveyed coal preparation plant workers had noise exposures exceeding the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration permissible exposure level of 90 dB(A). Sound levels around vibrating screens in these plants often exceed 90 dB(A). NIOSH is currently developing noise controls for horizontal vibrating screens. To characterize noise sources, NIOSH researchers performed sound pressure level (SPL) measurements on a vibrating screen at their Office of Mine Safety and Health Research laboratory in Pittsburgh. The results show that the entire screen contributes to noise below 1 kHz, and the vibration mechanism housings are most significant above 1 kHz. Constrained layer damping (CLD) treatments and an enclosure were used to reduce mechanism housing noise in this range from 1-10 kHz. These were evaluated using sound power level measurements according to ISO 3744. The CLD treatments reduced the A-weighted sound power level by 3.1 dB in the 1 to 10 kHz one-third-octave bands. A panel-on-frame vibration mechanism enclosure using various types of panels further reduced the A-weighted sound power level from the CLD configuration in the 1 to 10 kHz one-third-octave bands by 3.7, 4.0, and 3.9 dB for aluminum, steel, and Dynalam™ panels, respectively. The combination yielded a 7 dB reduction from baseline in A-weighted sound power for the same frequency range.

Because of the nature of the breakage in the Barmac vertical spindle impactor, the 80% reduction ratio is very small, so that when an energy efficiency is calculated from Bond's method, it appears to be very low. However, the product size distribution contains a high proportion of fines. It is argued that the production of these fines accounts for the high energy consumption, and Bond's method is modified to account for this, by considering the crusher to be, effectively, a number of smaller crushers in parallel, each having a different reduction ratio.

The purpose of this paper is to provide a method for analyzing the sequencing of mining production processes and predicting the effects of any planned changes. Included is a description of the development and utilization of a project-scheduling simulation that combines analytical scheduling with stochastic-activity durations. The simulation is demonstrated in two realistic examples: a longwall face-to-face transfer sequence and the effect of varying advance rates on longwall development sections. Statistical data that can provide a basis for more informed production decisions are generated in the form of project activity/path criticality and project-duration distributions. In both examples, a quantitative risk assessment, regarding subjective decisions in underground production sequencing, is presented.

The Jim Bridger Mine is operated by Bridger Coal Company and is located in Sweetwater County, 35 miles (56 km) northeast of Rock Springs, Wyoming (USA). The general location of the mine site is shown on Figure 1. Bridger Coal is a joint venture of NERCO Coal Corp, the operator, and Idaho Energy Resources Company. The permit boundary encompasses in excess of 20,000 acres (81 km2) and is nestled against the western side of the Continental Divide. Production started on July 3, 1974, and the mine has produced approximately 90 million tons (82 million t) while moving approximately 450 million cubic yards (344 million m3) of virgin earth. Annual production averages 5 to 7 million tons (4.5 to 6.4 million t) of run-of-mine coal. Coal is consumed on site by the Jim Bridger Power Plant, a 2,000-megawatt generating station, and the electricity is transmitted to the Pacific Northwest power grid (Oregon, Idaho, Northern California, etc.).

Total world energy consumption is projected to continue its strong growth of recent years. Because coal is the most abundant fossil fuel, it will likely remain an important energy source, particularly for power generation, into at least the early years of the next millennium. Clean coal technologies are available today that can economically reduce air pollution, primarily SO2 NOx and particulates, and for the higher efficiency technologies, CO2, from power generation. U.S. Department of Energy analyses show that the adoption of clean coal technologies could decrease carbon emissions worldwide while creating a strong export market with attendant creation of jobs in the U.S.

This paper will cover the problems confronting an owner when planning and estimating the cost of a proposed tunnel. Three factors are known: the length, size and the time allocated for the completion of the work. In general the difficulties encountered when driving a tunnel in California are the greatest at the lower elevations and in the Coast Range and are minimal in the Sierra Nevada mountains particularly in granitic formation. The writer will discuss the experience gained from observing the driving of about 120 miles of tunnel in California as well as the repairs of some tunnels. SIZE OF TUNNELS It is known that a small tunnel may be more costly to drive than one of somewhat larger dimensions. This fact was found to be true when a tunnel about 4,000 feet long was constructed to eliminate 7 miles of canal. The formation was lava so it was anticipated the ground would be self supporting because of the small bore. Actually the tunnel required support for most of its length and working conditions were poor. It became apparent that a larger size could have been driven at no additional cost and probably in less time. A composite material consists of two or more dissimilar components. These dissimilar components retain their identities when mixed together and contribute to the properties of the composite. A composite usually consists of two parts, the matrix and the reinforcing material, or extender that is added to the matrix. Typical materials used as the matrix in composites are metals, polymers, and ceramics. The reinforcing material can be added for any number of reasons. For instance, if the matrix is expensive, an inexpensive filler may be added to the matrix to lower the cost of the product without sacrificing properties. An example of this is calcite (CaC03) which is added to systems such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), to lower the cost. Reinforcements may also serve as a means to enhance the properties of the matrix material. For example, carbon fibers are frequently added to plastics to increase their strength, and glass spheres may be added to plastics to improve flexural strength. Mg(OH)z is added to polymers to give the property of fire retardancy. The latter is the focus of this paper.

The Ship Canal Water Quality Project includes a 2.7-mile, 18-ft and 10-in internal-diameter tunnel that extends from Ballard to Wallingford, two popular neighborhoods in the West of Seattle. During the TBM Main drive a 12' × 12' boulder with variable strength up to 47,000psi was encountered resulting on signicant damages to the Cutter ead. The rst part of this paper describes the design and construction of an underground recess in front of the TBM to create a safe working environment for the TBM repairs. The second part describes an injection campaign performed to seal an unforeseen water inow appeared during the excavation of the 11 Avenue Diversion Structure.

In the last two decades, acid iron ore pellets have established their predominant position as the iron-bearing burden material for blast furnace ironmaking in North America. It is a general practice that pelletization plants are asked to produce pellets of certain chemical composition and in a narrow range of sizes. A minimum amount of fines created during handling and transportation is desirable. Such a requirement is often expressed indirectly by the minimum compression load causing a pellet to break. The behavior of pellets inside a blast furnace, of course, is very important for a smooth and efficient operation. Before its melting in the lower part of a blast furnace during this period of several hours the behavior of pellets depends on their properties after induration as well as conditions inside each furnace. Among properties of indurated pellets, the ability to maintain their physical integrity in the burden and to be reducible are most important. To maintain the integrity of pellets (i.e., minimal low temperature breakdown, swelling and softening) so that there will be adequate overall permeability for certain wind rate and local permeability for gas/solid contact for reduction. A higher reducibility will moderate the adverse effects of swelling and softening and contribute to a smooth operation and efficient use of heat and reductants in a blast furnace. An article devoted to the relationships between the quality of iron ore pellets and blast furnace practice has been published elsewhere(1); therefore, no further discussion is needed here. The mechanism of strengthening of iron ore pellets during firing has been the subject of investigation of many authors(2). There is no doubt that the bridging of the growing hematite grains, particularly starting with magnetite concentrates, is very significant in the production of strong pellets. Recently, there are many reports from blast furnace operators that they have noticed the adverse effect of LTB in their plants. It is obvious that the strength derived from bridged hematite grains may disappear when hematite is converted to magnetite with thorough breakdown of grain structures. It is suggested that some other strengthening mechanism may be required in order to improve the LTB index of acid pellets. The influence of porosity on both compression strength and reducibility follows regular patterns. It has been suggested(1) that the amount of liquid slag in pellets during firing determines to a large extent the porosity, hence, indirectly, strength and reducibility.

The term bauxite was first used by O.P.A.P. Dufrenoy in 1845 for an ore which was discovered by Pierre Berthier in 1821 near the village of Les Beaux de Provence near Arles in southern France. His data suggested that this mineral was an alumina hydrate with two molecules of water. However, it was subsequently shown by thermal analysis that the mineral was a fortuitous mixture of the mono-hydrate and the tri-hydrate. Diaspore had been previously discovered in 1801 and gibbsite in 1822. The term was however retained as a rock name. The name of the village was changed to Les Baux around 1885; Sainte Claire Deville suggested that the mineral name should reflect this, and it was changed to bauxite (Bracewell, 1962, Rkgnier, 1988). Mining of bauxite began around 1860 in the Auriol region in the Bouches du Rhine area in the south of France. This ore was transported toMarseilles by carts and was processed in the Salindres plant, which at that time was the only plant producing alumina using the Deville process and aluminum by the chemical process. During that period white bauxite (low iron content) was particularly sought after for the production of aluminum sulfate, refractory bricks, and quick setting cement. Export of bauxite from France began in 1880 and was initially delivered to Chemische Fabrik, Goldschmischen near Breslau, and to Guilini's Ludwigshafen plant in Germany in 1885. These companies produced alum and aluminum sulfate (RCg- nier, 1988). The next bauxite mining operation was in Antrim County in Northern Ireland in 1873. This was first used for the manufacture of alumina refractory bricks and quick setting cement (Bracewell, 1962). It is important to emphasize that initially almost all of the bauxite which was produced came from France and was mainly used for non-metallurgical purposes. At that time even the production of alumina was mainly for use as a mordant in textile dying. However, with the development of the Hall-Héroult process, the alumina which was available was increasingly used for smelting to aluminum. In spite of this the demand for non-metallurgical bauxite continued to increase and a set of applications were developed. These include refractories, abrasives (including the recently developed proppants), high alumina cements, aluminum chemicals, activated bauxite, and alumina. It became increasingly evident that the high alumina-low alkali raw materials have special advantages. The question however was one of cost benefit. Chin (1989) has pointed out that the non-metallurgical operations have been traditionally grafted on a bauxite/alumina/aluminum industry tree. This article describes and analyzes the history of research into the origins of the uranium-vanadium(-radium) deposits of the Paradox Basin. For several decades after their discovery in 1881, research was desultory and almost entirely descriptive, fluctuating with demand for vanadium and radium. Systematic geologic descriptions, accumulated between 1910 and 1950, supported rapid progress during a government-backed surge of research in the 1950s, when uranium was the chief commodity of interest. Most of the major theoretical innovations date from this decade, including the use of concepts from solution chemistry to identify the conditions and constrain the processes of deposit formation and alteration. Research from this time was highly influential in geology at large, providing the model for sandstone-hosted uranium deposits worldwide and numerous new minerals and mineral structures. After about 1960, mine production remained high but research dwindled, and most new advances were to the details of the hydrothermal model of ore formation rather than its core concepts. By the end of the 1960s, the deposits were understood to have formed at the mixing interface of an oxidized, metal-bearing water with a reducing fluid of debated origin. Research was desultory over the ensuing decades; the source of the metals and the nature of the chemicals constituting the trap were not clearly established. They remain questions today, as do factors like the relationship between ore mineralization and the geologic history of the basin. (More in the full paper.)

The market for thermal coal has recently been growing rapidly and it is projected to continue to do so in the foreseeable future. Both the national and international markets often demand high Btu low sulfur thermal coal in order to minimize the cost of utilization and meet the environmental restrictions. High quality thermal coal can be prepared to compete in the utility market by desulfurizing the high Btu midwestern coal and blending it with low sulfur western coal which is usually low in Btu content. The methods that can be used for optimizing the coal preparation plant operating parameters for physically desulfurizing coal is presented.

In addition to the safety and equipment protection requirements, control systems are now called to implement intelligent drive controls derived from dynamic analysis modelling, as well as to provide fast and accurate diagnostics while keeping operator controls simple. These requirements led to the development of a new and innovative approach to control system development. This paper describes the control philosophy used by Conveyor Dynamics, Inc. (CDI) and some of the key features of our approach to the architecture of control systems.

According to the American Coal Ash Association, 105 million tons of coal combustion products (CCP) were produced by the power generating utilities in 1997. Of that total, 1.68 million tons were used in mining applications (ACAA, 1997). Results have ranged from the environmentally beneficial to neutral and, in some cases, detrimental. Twenty years ago coal ashes: bottom and fly ashes constituted nearly all CCPs. With the shift to new emission control technologies at power plants, however, large volumes of new products are being generated. Many do not lend themselves to traditional ash applications such as cement formulation. Many CCP disposal sites are not documented with reliable pre and post application monitoring. In this report we discuss types of CCP, their relevant characteristics and the mining environment. We have attempted to identify a range of documented applications and to draw conclusions about their environmental effects including benefits and adverse impacts.

This paper discusses the relationship between frother types and coal flotation as a function of particle size. It has been found that each frother has a unique size fraction that it will float effectively. This fact is very important when it comes to selecting a reagent scheme that will provide maximum recovery of both coarse and fine particles. Improvements in recovery can be attained when the chemical relationships between frother type and particle size floated are understood. Data from plant evaluations using commercial and developmental frothers are presented to verify the importance of frother types versus size fraction floated.

This paper will deal with the type of rocks so called evaporites, which are sedimentary rocks produced by water evaporation from seas, lakes or marginal lagoons, in warm and arid climates. Salts derived from these deposits are precipitated according to their solubility; that is, the more soluble precipitates first, overlain by other sediments like silts, shales, limestones, sands, etc. The most common evaporites, according to their chemical composition, are : Chlorides Sulphates Carbonates Nitrates Borates Common salt, or halite, sulphates like anhydrite and gypsum, are the most important. Potassium chloride (silvite and carnalite) and potassium sulphate are of great commercial value.

Treatment of refractory gold ores containing arsenic have always presented a major problem in their processing to recover the contained precious metal values. The major difficulties are concerned with lower recoveries, production of hazardous fumes, effluents and residues. Because of'these arsenic related problems, many otherwise economically attractive precious metal deposits and dumps all over the world are not exploited. In recent years, treatment processee for refractory gold ores and concentrates have been explored and a few commercial operations employing roasting or pressure leaching have resulted. Roasting has limitations due to environmental constraints related to off gases. Pressure leaching involving high temperatures (180% to 200%) and pressures (400 psi) is accompanied by high capital and operating costs. An alternate route to roasting for treating pyrite and arsenopyrite ores and concentrates ia the "lime-oxygen hydromet" process carried out at a moderate temperature (100%) and pressure (100 psi). A simplified process for treating such arsenic containing ores and concentrates utilizing low temperature and pressure oxidation is presented. This low cost treatment with compressed air and lime renders arsenic as an inert component in the residue, meeting all the requirements of the EPA Toxicity Test. The precious metal values are then extracted from the autoclaved residue by standard cyanidation. This paper discusses this new development.
