The American Society of Association Executives is a professional society composed of nearly 10,000 individuals who serve as salaried executives on the staffs of more than 6,500 associations. Represented is the full range of international, national, regional, state and local associations...including trade associations, professional societies, philanthropic organizations and others. The dramatic growth of ASAE during the past 15 years is a manifestation of the growth of the association movement during the past two decades. This is not to imply that associations are a new phenomenon, because they have existed for thousands of years. Ancient civilizations show evidence of groups formed for mutual protection and advancement. In the transition from ancient to medieval time, trade associations and guilds came to serve an important function for the craftsmen and merchants they represented, encouraging the growth of new industries, improved processes and education.

Rock mass properties testing for determining strength parameters is an integral part of geomechanics. These tests are performed either in a laboratory environment or in a field (in-situ). The authors share their experience in using numerical modelling in simulating the laboratory test procedures. This approach helps studying the rock breakage and failure mechanism more efficiently and provides a high degree of visualization. Moreover, imperfections and discontinuities can be easily incorporated in these models. This capability of providing arbitrary fractures and discontinuities facilitates in building a large knowledgebase of rock strength and failure mechanisms. This knowledgebase may then be used to generate heuristics for determining rock strengths for rock mass with fractures and discontinuities.

Experiments conducted with a 75-mm-diem hydroryclone have shown it is possible to obtain an iron ore concentrate containing 60% Fe. 2.65% SiO2, and 4.0% Al2O3 from Barsua iron-ore washing-plant slimes. About 60% of the iron values are recovered from slimes containing approximately 49% Fe, 8.9% A1203 and 11% SiO2. The obtained products can be used in the sinter feed for iron and steel making. The key to achieving process success lies in establishing the correct cut point (d50) of the hydrocyclone through the manipulation of operating and design variables, such as spigot and vortex finder diameter, solids concentration and operating pressure. The cyclone efficiency is represented by the partition curve. The cyclone performance, evaluated mathematically from the reduced efficiency curve, is represented by the equation Y = 100[1 -exp(-axb)], where: •X = did 50, •Y = corrected of efficiency (%) and •a and b are constants.

Convergence measurement across the 17.4-m (57-ft) high shaft station/loading pocket at Mt. Taylor provided continuing verification of stability and safety. Three levels of instrumentation, consisting of three lines each, were installed and monitored. The instrumentation showed that the flexible lining restrained the adjacent rock. The flexible lining consisted of pea gravel with neat cement between rock and liner plate, wooden crush blocks between liner plate and steel ring beams. The loading pocket is elliptical, 11.6 x 9.6 m (38 x 31.5 ft) inside diameter. The crush blocks were designed to allow 15 cm (6 in.) of convergence. Maximum predicted convergence was 7.0 cm (2.75 in.), and 5.7 cm (2.25 in.) was measured. Convergence measurements also demonstrated decreasing deformation with respect to elapsed time and distance from the measurement station to the temporary bottom of the shaft excavation.

The oxygen consumption method utilises an oxygen sensor to monitor the gas-phase oxygen concentrations in sealed chambers filled with reactive waste rock with subsequent confirmation of the oxygen content by gas chromatography. Results of experiments utilising low sulphide (<0.5w1%) waste rock yielded reproducible oxygen consumption rates on the order of 10-10 mol O2.kg-1. s-1. Petrographic analysis of the waste rock material indicated that the dominant sulphide mineral is pyrite (FeS2). Assuming a stoichiometry of 1.75 moles of O2 per mole of SO4 sulphate release rates were inferred to be between 6 and 18 mg SO4 kg-1 wk-1 Typically these results are 2 to 3 times greater than measured sulphate release rates from humidity cells. Our findings suggest that this techniques offers a rapid. cost efficient method for determining sulphate release rates in waste rock piles, even at low sulphide concentrations.

Direct mineral carbonation was investigated as a process to convert gaseous CO2, into a geologically stable final form. The process utilizes a slurry of water, with bicarbonate and salt additions, mixed with a mineral reactant, such as olivine (Mg2SiO4) or serpentine [Mg3Si2O5(OH)4]. Carbon dioxide is dissolved into this slurry, resulting in dissolution of the mineral and precipitation of magnesium carbonate (MgCO3). Optimum results were achieved using heat-pretreated serpentine feed material and a high partial pressure of CO2 (Pc02). Specific conditions include 155°C, PC02 = 185 atm and 15% solids. Under these conditions, a 78% conversion of the silicate to the carbonate was achieved in 30 minutes. Process mineralogy was utilized to investigate the appropriate feed characteristics, identify the process products and interpret the mineral dissolution and carbonate precipitation reaction paths. The Jabali zinc deposit in Yemen contains at least 9.4 Mt (10.4 million st) of ore at a grade of 10.7% zinc, 2.2% lead and 77 g/t (2.2 opst) silver. The zinc occurs as smithsonite with minor hydrozincite. The Jabali ore does not produce a zinc concentrate of sufficient grade to be acceptable to a conventional zinc smelter, and it has been necessary to formulate a less-conventional development plan. This involves the construction of a mine and concentrator at Jabali and a metal production facility using a new flowsheet designed specifically for the treatment of oxide material at Yanbu, Saudi Arabia. To give the facility the necessary economies of scale, the Jabali concentrate will be supplemented by feed from other deposits, this may be either oxide or sulfide material. The paper outlines the geology and proposed mining and treatment operations at Jabali, presents the flowsheet for Yanbu and estimates preliminary costs for both operations.

This paper describes variations in feed characteristics, preparation techniques, response to induration and product quality in pelletizing magnetite concentrates, earthy hematite ore fines, and specular hematite concentrates in grate kiln systems. The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company manages plants processing these various materials on the Marquette Iron Range in northern Michigan. The operations include the Humboldt Mining Company, Marquette Iron Mining Company, Empire Iron Mining Company and the Pioneer Pellet Plant. The combined output of the operations is approximately 9,000,000 long tons per year. The Humboldt Mining Company, owned by Ford Motor Company and Cliffs, produces pellets from a specular hematite concentrate. The Empire operation, which processes magnetite ore, is owned by Inland Steel Company, McLouth Steel Corporation, International Harvester and Cliffs. The Pioneer operation, which processes earthy hematite ores, is a joint venture of Republic Steel Corporation, McLouth Steel Corporation, Bethlehem Steel Corporation and Cliffs. The Marquette Iron Mining Company, owned by hones and Laughlin Steel Corporation, International Harvester, Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corporation and Cliffs, produces pellets from specular hematite concentrate at the Republic Mine and Eagle Mills Pellet Plant. With the exception of the Eagle Mills plant, the operations employ the grate-kiln pelletizing system. Descriptions of the Empire, Pioneer and Republic operations, which have a combined capacity of 7,200,000 tons per year, are given in the paper.

According to the scientific views formed by the middle of nineteen seventies there should be no possibility of commercial diamondiferous kimberlites in the north of the west European platform. However a later analysis of the geological data gave rise to the concept that diamond bearing kimberlites would be present in the north but on the mineralogical level they would differ from kimberlites of South Africa and Yakutia. Further investigations resulted in the confirmation of these conclusions and with discovery at the beginning of 1980 of diamond bearing kimberlite pipes in the Arkhangelsk region.

An airborne dust cloud is an ensemble of particles of varied size, density, shape and states of aggregation. An understanding and quantifying of the dispersion and deposition of the dust generated in mines is essential to the development of measures for reducing worker exposure to dust. In coal mining, the major portion of the dust is generated during the cutting of coal using either a shearer or a continuous miner. The major phenomenon affecting ambient concentration is the deposition of dust. Particle deposition may take place due to the effect of gravitational, inertial, electrostatic, and thermal forces, and mechanisms such as Brownian and eddy diffusion, and inertial impaction. The three major mechanisms of deposition in turbulent flow in mines are diffusion (Brownian and eddy), sedimentation and inertial impaction. The mechanisms determining particle deposition are size dependent.

The capability for on-line measurement of the quality characteristics of conveyed coal now enables mine operators to take advantage of the inherent heterogeneity of those streams and split them into wash and no-wash stocks. Relative to processing the entire stream, this reduces the amount of coal that must be washed at the mine and thereby reduces processing costs, recovery losses, and refuse generation levels. In this paper, new approaches for optimal control of the segregation process, using time series models and empirical distributions, are presented and demonstrated using field data.

The sulfur dioxide emitted in low concentrations in flue gases from the combustion of sulfur-containing coals and fuel oils is a significant factor in contamination of the atmosphere with sulfur dioxide. A review of methods for treating gases containing high concentrations of sulfur dioxide shows that they are seldom satisfactory for purifying flue gases. Processes developed specifically for treating flue gases using liquid absorbents are costly and may cause localized pollution, because the cooled flue gases can settle in the vicinity of the stack. Bench-scale research is being conducted to investigate the use of dry absorbents for sulfur dioxide removal at temperature levels of about 250°- 300° F. and 600°-650° F. Alkalized alumina has been found effective for treating simulated flue gas and Is regenerable by hydrogen, carbon monoxide, or producer gas. Other metallic oxides have been tested as absorbents also. Chemically impregnated activated carbons removed sulfur dioxide from the gas at 265° F. Vanadium pentoxide is effective as a catalyst for oxidizing of sulfur dioxide in the simulated flue gas at temperatures lower than have been used commercially for gases with higher concentrations of sulfur dioxide. Conversions of sulfur dioxide to trioxide wore studied as a function of temp- erature over a range of about 570° to 750° F.

The practical and effective pulp distributor here presented is believed to be of a completely new and innovative design. It was developed at the San Nicolas Plant of the Marcona Mining Company in Peru, where it has been thoroughly plant tested using iron ore slurries of a particularly abrasive nature. It has proven to be superior to the apparatus originally installed, or to any observed in operation elsewhere. In plant practice the capacity and efficiency of many process units such as screens, magnetic separators, and jigs are strongly affected by the loading pattern, and for better results the flow of pulp must be proportioned across the receiving lip in equal quantities per unit width. The distributors originally installed on the drum magnetic separators in San Nicolas proved to be unsatisfactory, and several trial modifications failed to show any improvement. As is usually the case, feed rates were being steadily increased, and appreciable losses to tailings resulted. A check of the distributors on the market discloses no reasonable substitute, so efforts were directed toward devising an entirely new type. Required was a positive type of action which would guarantee that the pulp flow be spread equally along the length of the drum. Discussion As indicated, the motivation for development was simple necessity. The plant in San Nicolas crushes, grinds, and concentrates magnetic iron ores of a particularly abrasive nature, and depends largely on magnetic separation to obtain a marketable product. Feed to the numerous drum magnetic cobbers and finishers varies from rod mill discharge at a nominal minus ten mesh to a ball mill fine grind of seventy percent minus three hundred and twenty-five mesh. The use of tank cells over the years has provided a means for low cost, space efficient, extra capacity in existing flotation circuits. In some cases, new plants have selected tank cells as the machine of choice. Typical tank cells use high efficiency impellers for mixing, which results in low power draw. Unfortunately, these mixers have poor aerating characteristics that compromise metallurgical performance. This has all changed with Outokumpu&apos;s new flotation concepts. Outokumpu has recently developed the HG or High Grade flotation cell that can provide higher recovery with better selectivity while maintaining the simple operation of conventional cells.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is investigating biodegradation of cyanide as a means of decommissioning heap leach operations. Biological oxidation decreased weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide in process solutions1from 50 to 170 ppm down to 0.1 ppm. The tests were conducted both in trickling column reactors, using quartz as the growth surface, and in upflow columns, using activated carbon as the growth surface. In addition, exploratory tests indicated that bacteria will destroy residual cyanide in leached ore. A flowsheet has been proposed for closure of heap leach operations in which the metals processing portion of the plant, possibly the carbon adsorption columns, or a collection pond is used as a bioreactor. The cyanide in the process solution is destroyed in the bioreactor and the treated water is used to rinse residual cyanide from the spent heaps. The water is recycled until the effluent WAD cyanide concentration meets discharge standards.

This report describes Koppelman&apos;s work to develop the K-Fuel® Series C Process used to dry and stabilize Powder River Basin coal. It also contains summaries of the results of bench-scale and pilot plant tests conducted to prove the Series C Process. The process is being used by the KFx-Thermo Ecotek partnership for a 500,000 ton per year commercial plant that has been constructed near Gillette, Wyoming. The plant is presently undergoing shakedown.

Disseminated Au-As-Hg mineralization is localized along the Getchell Fault system at the Getchell Mine in north-central Nevada. Replacement ore bodies occur in Cambrian carbonaceous limestone and limy shale beds. Cretaceous granodiorite, dacite porphyry, and andesite porphyry dikes parallel the fault zone and are spatially associated with the mineralization. Hydrothermal alteration and mineralization occur continuously along 4-5 km of the fault system, and extend more than 1 km down-dip. Alteration consists primarily of removal of carbonate and deposition of quartz, pyrite, and carbonaceous material. Marcasite, sericite, kaolinite, calcite, barite, and fluorite are common. Gold content reaches more than 43 ppm in parts of the altered zones and averaged 9.3 ppm in the mined ore bodies. For the mineralized zones as a whole arsenic averages 0.28%, and occurs primarily as realgar, orpiment, and arsenopyrite. Mercury (22 ppm) is finely disseminated and mercury-bearing minerals are seldom recognizeable. Accessory mineralization includes antimony (100 ppm), copper (47 ppm) , lead (18 ppm) , molybdenum (10 ppm) , tungsten (16 ppm) , and zinc (50 ppm) . Geologic field studies and K-Ar dating suggest that the mineralization is related to a hydrothermal system produced by the granodiorite and related dikes.

The compositions and natures of the materials charged to a blast furnace, as well as their respective distributions within the furnace, are known to int1uence furnace performance. However, fifteen years ago, there was little reason to believe that any significant variation of these parameters had been overlooked. Nor was there any particular reason to believe that olivine might be a particularly useful raw material for blast furnace applications.

The continued decline In the production of synthetic soda ash (sodium carbonate) due to high costs and associated environmental factors, has improved the world demand for natural soda ash. The largest resource of natural soda ash is the mineable trona deposits of Southwestern Wyoming. Wyoming trona, a lacustrine evaporite of Eocene Age, is mined by five producers which process over 90% of the United States and 20% of the worlds soda ash. Total world consumption of soda ash is forecast to grow 1% annually. Increased expansion into foreign market&apos;s is absorbing the domestic overcapacity.

Prompted by the need to conserve energy and reduce operating costs, Agrico Mining Company has made two significant improvements in the transportation of phosphate ore from the mine to the beneficiation plant. One improvement involves a change in a slurry pipeline system which substantially reduced pumping energy, and the other improvement is a major innovation for the phosphate mining industry which involves the transportation of the ore by railroad. This paper briefly describes these two projects.
