A new method of slaking lime has been developed by DENVER EQUIPMENT DIVISION of Joy Industrial Equipment Company and patented under U. S. Patent 4,261,953. The new method utilizes an attrition machine, commonly used in mineral processing circuits as a sand scrubbing device, to slake lime. The scrubbing effect of the attrition slaker continuously produces a fresh reactive surface so that further slaking may occur. This process allows for utilization of slaking all grades of burnt lime and most grades of dolomite lime. Testing indicates that poor grades of water usually not considered for this service can now be tolerated using the attrition slaker. The slaked lime produced is of higher quality, faster reacting and much less apt to produce scaling problems than previously experienced. The attrition slaker can be combined with a spiral classifier and ball mill to eliminate any need for grit handling or grit removal. The attrition slaker can be designed for all burnt lime tonnages up to the limit of 175 tph and 1" pebble lime size. Control can be maintained easily with minimal operator assistance. The equipment, the principals of process metallurgy, and the above topics will be presented.

"A computer-based approach to online supervisory control and operations management of bulk materials handling terminals". This paper describes an integrated computer facility supporting the functions and responsibilities of shift operations, scheduling, maintenance and management using real-time interactive techniques. The functions and responsibilities as related to coal export terminals are specifically addressed, although these functions would be equally applicable to other terminal configurations and other commodities. North River Energy Company a previous subsidiary of Republic Steel Corporation commenced development of the Number One Mine in mid-1972. The mine is located in West Alabama and presently employs a total of 632 people. Production capabilities have increased to 1.4 million clean tons of steam coal per year with the newly purchased Longwall System. Washer recovery averages 57 percent. The seam being mined is the Pratt or Corona with an average height of 52 inches and an average cover of 540 feet. The immediate roof is laminated sandstone and the floor is composed of a hard fireclay. Total production out of the mine is provided to Alabama Power Company under a longtime contract.

The Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration held the first MPD Student Video Contest during the spring of 2021. The event showcased the work of 18 graduate and undergraduate students from several U.S. and international institutions. The contest began in January when students submitted a onepage abstract for judging. Over the next several months, they developed a three-minute video that further explained their research findings. Both the abstract and video were evaluated by a panel of judges, and the top-placing participant was recognized at an MPD virtual event held on June 10.

In order to control and dispatch the sewage water coming from 3 tunnels toward 2 downstream sewage tunnels, a large cavern has been excavated in a suburb of PARIS. Located at a depth of 47,00 m, it has been excavated using the NATM procedure through swelling clay, weathered sandstone, and marl and chalk. It is 16,50 m high, 12,40 m wide and 60, 00 m long, with an elliptical cross-section and its two ends are egg-shapped. The final lining of the cavern is composed of 30 to 40 cm of shotcrete, steel ribs and passive anchor bars. The excavation stages and related movements were surveyed by extensometers, pressure cells and convergence devices. The design, method of construction of the cavern and the results of the measurements made are commented.

Two key components make up the core of a rapid excavation operation. They are: the breaking up of the rock and its removal. Owing to the complexity inherent in mechanical rock-breaking and the relative infancy of the art, for a number of years the first of these two components has received virtually undivided attention from the industry. Only recently has some concern been expressed about the technology and the economics of the much ignored second component: muck removal. As the continuous boring machine's percentage downtime continues to trend lower in the future, the need for adequate and more effective materials handling systems in rapid excavation will become increasingly more acute. (1) Recognition of the need for a broader and more far-sighted approach to our problem has been eloquently underscored in the conclusions of the Committee on Rapid Excavation sponsored by the National Research Council: "Ultimate attainment of the desired cost and speed improvements is significantly dependent on recognition of the excavation process as a system whose subsystems are critically inter-related. Substantial amounts of full-scale field testing of integrated driving, muck removal, and support subsystems are required." (2)

INTRODUCTION The planned 166 kilometer (103 mile) Metro rapid rail transit system in Washington, D.C. is being designed and constructed by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. At the present time, 112.6 kilometers (70 miles) of this system is in operation and contains 21 route-kilometers (13 miles) of rock tunneling, and 14.5 route-kilometers (9 miles) of soft ground tunneling. An additional 2.4 kilometers (1.5 miles) of single track tunnels in rock are planned and 6 additional contracts will consist of some 8 kilometers (5 miles) of twin tunnel, resulting in 16 additional linear kilometers (10 miles) of single track tunnel in soft ground. The Authority plans, upon its evaluation and the recommendation of the General Engineering Consultant, to include an alternative design incorporating the convergence confinement method of construction known as the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), for Sections E-5, E-6e and E-8a of the E-Route. The Metro system is constructed in a variety of geological conditions and crosses the boundary of two major geographic provinces. Alkaline pressure oxidation (POX) is an oxidative pre-treatment option that is commercially used for high-carbonate sulfidic gold ores. The high carbonate grades within the feed ore shifts the ideal operating pH to a basic regime. Compared with acidic POX, alkaline POX typically requires additional steam input due to a lower sulfur oxidation load and a high rate of in-situ carbon dioxide generation that needs to be vented along with steam. The cost of this steam addition is the largest differentiator between acid POX operation and alkaline POX from a cost comparison. However, alkaline POX can offset these costs through reduced acid usage for pre-acidulation and decreased alkali reagent consumption for subsequent neutralization. This paper reviews the specific operating cost impacts of acid/base consumption between alkaline and acidic POX with ores which require pre-acidulation, the overall economics of alkaline POX, and the regimes in which alkaline POX is economically favorable. The findings aim to guide industry professionals in making informed decisions for alkaline POX adoption by providing a summary view of its operational benefits and costs, contributing to the development of cost-effective and sustainable gold ore processing techniques.

North America had an Important role in the early development of sampling theories. Unfortunately many progressive ideas were soon frozen into a series of guidelines based on the philosophy that "honest sampling only requires good judgment and practical experience". Such a philosophy appeared to be good enough In the early age of the mining Industry; however, it became quickly necessary to find new approaches. During the last thirty years, Pierre Gy's sampling theory provided tremendous breakthrough in the comprehension of this new science, nevertheless went unnoticed in North America. Sampling always generates complex problems and as the philosopher and mathematician Descartes suggested: "A complex problem can often be dissociated Into a series of several simpler problems, only then you try to solve those one by one". The only way to solve sampling problems is to consider each component of the overall sampling error: components of a continuous model such as long-range quality fluctuations, periodic quality fluctuations, weighting fluctuations; components of a discrete model such as materialization errors, delimitations errors, extraction errors, fundamental errors, grouping errors, and segregation errors. PAST AND CURRENT PRACTICES Many sampling methodologies have been developed, improved, and standardized during the first half of this century. Accordingly, sampling equipment has been proposed, selected, and used by standards committees. Today, there is a tremendous variety of sampling methodologies and corresponding tools offered to anyone with limited experience in sampling and it is very easy for a chemist, metallurgist, geologist or miner to spend considerable money in equipment transgressing the most basic rules of sampling correctness. Sampling stations that never worked properly in modern plants often cause engineers to abandon them and return to a primitive form of grab sampling.

The stability of shale gas wells drilled through current and future coal reserves can be compromised by ground deformations due to nearby longwall mining. Depending on the longwall-induced rockmass permeability, the high-pressure explosive gas from the damaged well may reach mine workings and overwhelm the mine ventilation systems. This study uses geomechanical models to estimate the rockmass permeability induced by mining. A two-panel longwall model of a deep, 341-m-cover mining site in southwestern Pennsylvania is constructed in 3DEC to explicitly model the rockmass by a Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) technique. Stress-induced fracture apertures and permeabilities are calculated across the model and are validated against permeability measurements. A Fracture Flow Code (FFC) is developed to use these results to predict potential inflow to the mine should a gas well breach occur. One hundred DFN realizations are simulated, and the results show that for a gas pressure of 2.4 MPa, the average of the predicted inflow rates to this deep-cover mine is 0.03 m3 /s, significantly lower than the average inflow of 0.92 m3 /s for a shallow-cover mine (145 m deep) studied in the previous work (Khademian, et al. 2021). Much has been published concerning the subject of coal preparation as related to electric power generation however it is always a most vital topic for both utilities and coal producers, It also constitutes a field of study that is never finished since new concepts and changing demands continually require altered perspectives. One graphic illustration that has been used to emphasize the rapidity with which times are changing is the fact that during World War I, a station that consumed 1000 tons per day was looked upon as a large central station, while today some single generators require 1500 tons during the same period, For further emphasis, at that time a 20,000 horsepower turbo-generator was a mighty large machine; today, a unit of this size is planned for driving the boiler water feed pump required for a single large main unit. During the past ten years alone, electric utilities have more than doubled their percentage of coal consumed as compared to the total market. They now account for approximately 40% of the United States consumption and one-third of all production including export, Conversely, approximately 70% of all U. S. steam electric generation is by coal and this percentage is expected to increase. It is further predicted that utility consumption will increase from the current 160,000,000 tons per year to between 400 and 500 million tons in 1975 which is approximately equal to todays total production

Over the next two decades there will be significant trade and development opportunities in China for mining, engineering, equipment, and construction companies interested in becoming part of the development of China's chemical and fertilizer industries. At last count, China's phosphate ore reserves of 11.8 Gt (13 billion st), ranked fourth in the world behind the US, the USSR, and Sahara-Morocco. However, a recent statement by the head of the Ministry of Geology and Minerals, Sun Daguang, claims that with increased prospecting in the last few years, China's phosphate reserves now rank first in the world. Whatever the actual size of its known and potential reserves, China's present phosphate processing capabilities fall far short of demand, while the substantial progress that has been made in this area points out the severity of the problems that still remain. Since 1949 China has developed 181 mines and increased its phosphate concentrate production from 10 kt (11,000 st) to 10.86 Mt (11.97 million st). By the 1980s, China was the third largest chemical fertilizer producer in the world-although this claim is slightly misleading as China's nitrogen/phosphate potassium ratios are far from average world ratios and even further from US standards. According to the Sixth Five Year Plan promulgated in 1982, the country's development plans emphasize the expansion and upgrading of key energy and industrial sectors, including that of fertilizer production-specifically phosphate and potash. Within the framework of the plan, the Ministry of Chemical Industry's development priorities are to: • Increase potash production by 150% to 50 kt (55,115 st). • Raise phosphate fertilizer production 21.2% to 2.8 Mt (3.1 million st), 46 kt (50,705 st) of which will come from new projects constructed and completed within the Sixth Five Year Plan, with projected new production of phosphate concentrate and complex fertilizer in the next decades totaling 500 kt (551,146 st). • Commence work to increase phosphate ore production by 8.33 Mt (9.18 million st). Facilities for 2.43 Mt (2.68 million st) will be completed and come on stream by 1985. • Commence work to increase iron pyrite ore production by 3.69 Mt (4.07 million st), facilities for 2.9 Mt (3.2 million st) will be completed and come on stream by 1985. • Verify 600 Mt (661 million st) of new phosphate ore reserves. Since the promulgation of the Sixth Five Year Plan, Chinese authorities have announced that 70 key construction projects will receive top priority in the implementation of the plan. These projects include five in the chemical industry area, including the construction of four fertilizer plants in Urumqi (Xinjiang), Zhenhai (Zhejiang), Beijing, and Lucheng (Shanxi), and a pyrite mine in Yunfu (Guangdong). In addition, by 1985 the state will expand or construct three major phosphate mines: Wangji in Hubei, Kaiyang in Guizhou, and Kunyang in Yunnan. Fertilizer Ratios In 1982, China's fertilizer production was slightly higher than 12 Mt (13.2 million st) and consisted of 80% nitrogen, 19% phosphate, and 0.19% potassium. By 1985, state officials project that fertilizer production will reach 13.4 Mt (14.8 million st) and consist of 78.4% nitrogen (10.5 Mt or 11.6 million st), 21.2% phosphate (2.8 Mt or 3 million st), and 0.39% potassium (52.3 kt or 57,605 st). To attain the world average using the country's 1985 projected production level for nitrogen, China will have to double its 1985 phosphate production to 5.76 Mt (6.35 million st) and increase its 1985 potassium production almost 80 times to 4.1 Mt (4.5 million st). These numbers demonstrate the seriousness of the fertilizer production problem in China today and the long-term nature of the problem's solution. Development Examples Yunnan is the third largest phosphate-rich province in China with verified deposits of 1.9 Gt (2.1 billion st). Despite this abundance, the province only mines around 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of phosphate rock annually. In June of this year, Yunnan announced its intention to initiate 39 development projects within the next two and a half years, requiring an estimated $200 million worth of foreign investment. "INTRODUCTIONIn view of a global trend towards urbanization, more and more trunk sewers and combined sewer overflow tunnels (CSO) with medium to large diameters and the corresponding link sewers are currently built and under design. Shielded tunnel boring machines using segmental lining as tunnel support represent an efficient solution for construction of new wastewater and supply tunnels. Especially in the field of sewers, the durability of concrete structures both exposed to any groundwater present on its exterior and to aggressive waste water as well as gases on its interior is a key requirement. Despite thorough research on segmental lining and mechanized tunneling machinery, conventional thermoplastic liners show comparatively minimal progress in terms of practical advancements. This is in contrast with the development of the latest segment embedded high density polyethylene (HDPE) system. Based on experiences achieved, this paper discusses the latest development of an integral protective lining system in respect of material characteristics and its adaptability to both project and customers’ demands. Reviewed performances, as the bondage behavior of the embedded HDPE system at axial stress loads due to acting thrust cylinders during ring build as well as the ability to drain pressurized water behind the embedded membrane, tested at full scale segments, are also presented. The paper is round off by presenting first details of sewer projects endeavoring to utilize this cutting-edge solution for an integral concrete protection, which will be commenced beginning of 2016.CASE HISTORIES ENCOURAGE ADVANCEMENTS Past experience has shown that unprotected concrete surfaces as well as chemical based linings such as coatings, sprayed linings and cured in-place-systems cannot reach the desired life times. Also the fact that in deep tunnel sewer system hardly maintenance is possible, a durable and maintenance free system is required which only can be reached by applying mechanical anchored HDPE (CPL)."

"This paper presents the results of a comprehensive study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) to evaluate the effects of longwall-induced subsurface deformations and permeability changes on shale gas well integrity and safety under shallow cover. NIOSH researchers selected a study site over a southwestern Pennsylvania coal mine, which extracts 1,500-ft-wide longwall faces under 482 feet of cover. One in-place inclinometer well and three permeability monitoring wells were drilled and installed over a 125-ft by 275-ft centers abutment pillar. In addition to the inclinometer well and monitoring wells, surface subsidence measurements and underground coal pillar pressure measurements were conducted as the first 1,500-ft-wide longwall panel on the south side of the abutment pillar mined by the site.A number of FLAC3D finite difference simulations (Itasca Consulting, 2017) were conducted to estimate surface subsidence, coal pillar pressure increases, and horizontal displacements in the in-place inclinometer (IPI) monitoring well. Comparisons of the FLAC3D finite difference simulation results and the surface, subsurface, and underground instrumentation results show that the measured IPI casing deformations are in reasonable agreement with those predicted by the FLAC3D models, and that the measured surface subsidence and underground pillar pressure are in excellent agreement with those predicted by the 3D models. Measured permeability changes were incorporated into a preliminary calculation to evaluate the effect of a hypothetical shale gas well leak on longwall ventilation. Results from this 2018 research clearly indicate that under shallow cover, the measured horizontal displacements within the abutment pillar are at least one order of magnitude higher than those measured in a 2017 study under deep cover and slightly higher than those measured in a 2014 study under medium cover. This research represents a very important step and initiative in utilizing the knowledge and science obtained from mining research to improve miner and public safety as well as the safety and health of the workers in the oil and gas industries"

INTRODUCTION Rapid transit systems involving near surface tunneling in hard rock are becoming more numerous, especially along the northeast corridor of the East Coast. Tunneled systems are under construction in Washington, D.C. and are being planned for Atlanta, Buffalo and Baltimore. Near surface tunneling is defined for this paper as being that in which the crown is 100 feet or less below ground surface. For Rosslyn Station, the total cover ranged from 52 to 70 feet. The rock cover, however, ranged from 40 to 50 feet which is slightly less than the station height and about two-thirds of its width. Rosslyn Station (Fig. 1) is the only station excavated completely in hard rock in the Virginia portion of the 98.5 mile Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's (WMATA) rapid transit system. The station site, oriented in a north-south direction beneath a main thoroughfare and flanked by multistory office buildings, was fixed by the need to serve a dense population center at a specific location and geologic conditions were a secondary consideration in siting. There was no previous underground rock excavation in the Washington Metropolitan Area of the size and scope of Rosslyn Station that offered a practical case history guide to the geologic conditions and excavation problems to be encountered. Following an in-depth scenario and strategic planning exercise in 1997, Noranda's mine production goal was set at 500,000 tonnes per year of both copper and zinc metal within five years. There had been no recent discoveries, reserves were shrinking and things had to be done differently and quickly. Change is now continual in our program but here is what we did first: Combined the exploration and business development groups Formed teams to search for and respond to opportunity Made our geologists more business minded and our engineers more optimistic Went global Set clear thresholds, farmed out the marginal properties, fast tracked the others Focused reconnaissance exploration where we had a clear competitive advantage Became a "flexible" partner to both juniors and seniors Is it working? A number of successes, near successes, and outright failures are discussed. The main result is a much higher rate of opportunity flux which is essential for success in the mining industry.

INTRODUCTION Technologic progress depends on new and innovative ideas, the practical application of these ideas, and finally as the technology is developed and demonstrated, the engineering improvement or replacement of existing capabilities. In many areas the new ideas, although known, are not immediately put to practical use in all applicable fields. Good technologic forecasting for research and development within the excavation field coupled with adequate technology transfer is necessary to ensure timely application of innovative ideas to remove bottlenecks in the total system. The purposes of this paper are (1) to show the potential ability of technologic forecasting to meet future demands in rapid excavation through the acceleration of excavation rates by research and development in several related technologic fields, (2) to provide a brief review of the initial development of the ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency) Rock Mechanics and Rapid Excavation Program, (3) to draw attention to the research projects completed or underway in the FY 1970-1972 ARPA program and explain where information or program results can be obtained, (4) to summarize the progress and accomplishments of applied research contracts in the rock disintegration element of the ARPA program, and (5) to discuss the research directions planned for the remaining years of the program. The mining complex, which the Mines Gaspé division of Noranda Mines Limited has operated in Murdochville since 1954, includes open pit and underground mines, two mills, one leaching plant and a smelter. The under- ground mining uses predominantly a large scale room and pillar method, rooms 15 m wide, 30 m high and 300 m long being common. Ore production is effected by 4.5 m3 front-end loaders and 32-tonne trucks powered respectively by 225 and 325 kW diesels. Daily dust and gas readings show that air quality can be maintained at an acceptable level with much less ventilation than that normally specified. This paper emphasizes the point that air requirements should be based on Air Quality Standards, thus allowing an operation to benefit from favourable conditions or from improvements such as exhaust treatment, fuel alteration, etc.

"In the Netherlands, the Dutch Tunnel Standard has been developed for the execution of road tunnel projects. The Dutch Tunnel Standard is based on the Dutch Tunnel Law (WARVW) which sets the minimum safety standard for road tunnels in the Netherlands. Uniformity of tunnels and the uniform perception of a tunnel by its users leads to a higher safety level. Therefore, several items in the Dutch Tunnel Standard are specifically developed to ensure safety in emergency situations through the plane of human factors. Taking human factors into account is important in regular traffic situations, but in an emergency situation, this can be vital. In this paper, the development and contents of the Dutch Tunnel Standard are explained in the first part and in the second part, the systems related to human factors are described. DUTCH TUNNEL LAW AND THE NEED FOR THE DUTCH TUNNEL STANDARD In the 90’s of last century and the early 2000’s, several serious accidents occurred in tunnels in Europe. These accidents involved fire and led to many casualties. After these accidents, the European Union decided to change the regulations for tunnel safety, leading to the EU directive 2004/54/EG. The primary goal of this directive is, that casualties are minimized in case of a calamity in a tunnel (e.g. fire). In the Netherlands, the EU directive led to the development of the tunnel law and a tunnel regulation (in 2006) to prescribe the safety features required for a safe tunnel. The new Dutch tunnel law – cited in the Building Act – was meant to make tunnel design easier – but resulted at first in the opposite effect. Tunnel design in the Netherlands and design standards of Rijkswaterstaat Rijkswaterstaat – the executing organisation of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment – is the owner of the tunnels in the Dutch national motorway network, thus owner of the majority of the road tunnels in the Netherlands. In the early years of tunnel building in the Dutch national highway network (approximately 1950 – 1970), Rijkswaterstaat was not only owner, but also designer of its own assets. Most Dutch tunnels are submersed tunnels, because these type of tunnels provide a cost-effective way to make river crossings. Another type of tunnel that is used, is a TBM tunnel. Because of the geological conditions in the Netherlands (merely clay/peat and sand), there are no NATM or drill-and-blast tunnels in the Netherlands. Since the last decades, land tunnels (covered roads) are becoming more common to provide for multiple use of surface space and to meet more modern environmental regulations as traffic increases near densely populated areas. Tunnel lengths in the Netherlands vary from 500 m to 1.5 km for river crossings up to 6 km for the Western Scheldt (bored) tunnel. The lengths of land tunnels vary from 500 m up to 3 km. With these increasing lengths, some safety topics and design topics arise, topics that were non-issues in the past, when tunnels were only used as river crossings."
