The paper introduces a new rock mass cuttability classification (RMCC) system for roadheaders used in coal mines. It includes performance prediction models for both axial and transverse roadheaders, based on six parameters: uniaxial compressive strength, Cerchar abrasivity index, volumetric joint count, strike and dip of joints, joint aperture, and groundwater condition. The study validates the RMCC system through field and laboratory measurements, showing high correlation coefficients between net cutting rates and RMCC indices.

INTRODUCTION Urban tunneling in soil poses a unique set of problems to planners, designers and contractors. One of the important concerns is the impact of tunneling on the environment: not only the effects of noise, vibrations, construction traffic and surface traffic diversions, but also the effects of ground movements and dewatering on existing structures and facilities. Underpinning or other protection of structures often consume more than 10% of the total construction cost of an urban rapid transit tunnel, and another unknown percentage is expended on construction procedures designed to minimize these environmental effects. Ideally, many basic planning and design decisions should be based on reliable predictions of ground movements due to tunneling. Some of these decisions are: the choice of tunnel alignment and depth to minimize risks and effects of ground movements; selection of schemes to protect existing structures through soil improvement or underpinning, or outright acquisition and possible' demolition; relocation of utilities; selection of procedures for construction monitoring and project control; and the choice of construction and lining methods. To make rational decisions of this nature, the owner and his designers must perform analyses that will balance risks and costs of a variety of alternatives; but to make meaningful risk analyses, they must employ rational methods of predicting ground movements and their effects and must know the reliability of these predictions. Of course, the risk analyses also must consider politics, public relations, insurance and liabilities.

"More than 6,300 people attended SME’s 2016 Annual Conference & Expo in Phoenix, AZ and many of them made the trip to the conference to take part in the excellent technical sessions that are presented on a yearly basis by the Society.Holding true to form, this year’s conference was full of options. In fact, this year there were 121 technical sessions and 751 presentations to chose from. The following is a sample of some of the technical sessions as seen through the eyes of the editors of Mining Engineering and SME technical papers.SME Sections Sharing Success: Changing thePublic Perception of MiningThis session was a workshop on how several local sections were effective in getting the message out to their communities and schools about the value of the extractive minerals industry. Several sections shared their outreach successes, including the Mining in Society merit badge activities by the Minnesota Section by Julie Lucas and SME’s participation in the World Scout Jamboree in Japan by Frank McAllister.Dan Alexander highlighted activities by the Pittsburgh Section, such as preparing minerals kits and pamphlets for elementary school classes and regional science fairs. The West Virginia University Student Chapter used the kits as handouts at their local gem and mineral show. The mining executive works in a cyclical industry. His employment is subject to the vagaries of the marketplace. Boom and bust has always been the industry's story. "Big oil" failed in its mining effort. This left emotional and financial scars on many mining families. One must remember that mining executives always play a high-stakes game. Given the cyclical nature of the mining industry, mining executives need to take care of their own financial security. The mining executive that does not plan for his financial security in this cyclical business is playing Russian Roulette with his future. Take a look at those people who have reached their later years with the mining industry. One usually finds three categories of people. Those few in the first group have been fortunate enough to have worked for one company. They have survived the winnowing process of cyclicality, political problems, and takeovers. They have reached normal retirement age. For them, the retirement years are usually comfortable. People in the second group have worked for those same mining companies. But these people have been forced out by early retirement. Or they have been laid off for cyclical, takeover, or political reasons. The third group includes those who have held many positions in the mining industry. Probably not until their later years are they fully vested, if at all, in a pension program. The first small group, then, is the exception. The others, unless they have taken care of their financial security, are doomed to later years of financial problems, stress, and unhappiness. Too late in life, many realize the harsh realities of failure to plan and implement a personal financial program. Mining executives go to some of the world's leading mining schools, to learn how to make money. The curriculum is technically strong. Most mining graduates are familiar with the intricacies of discounted cash flow, present value, and the Hoskold formula. But few of these same mining schools require courses on personal financial planning. Such courses could give mining students a realistic foundation and the mechanisms with which to cope with their cyclical profession. An executive has only three sources of money. He can make money at work. He can put his money to work. Or he can get money from charities, such as government programs. Of these three sources of money, money at work has the best chance of providing financial security in later years. The mining executive must think of the day when he will be too old to work and contribute to the market place. At this point, the quantity and quality of his investments will determine whether his later years will be secure. Along with the Mining Engineering Handbook, two key books should be included in the mining executive's library. These are Venita Van Caspel's The Power of Money Dynamics and Benjamin J. Stein's Financial Passages. These books contain the basic concepts of personal financial planning so critical to an individual's financial survival. Venita points out the simple formula that is the key to financial independence: Time + Money + American Free Enterprise (Rate of Return) = Opportunity to Become Financially Independent Chart 1 shows that this is not a trite formula. The chart shows the dramatic effects of compounding over time. The chart also shows at various yields what a $2000 a year Individual Retirement Account (IRA) contribution will accumulate. Chart 1 (from Money magazine) is based on the future value of an ordinary annuity. It shows that the key to amassing a small fortune by the time a person reaches his 50s is starting to save methodically in his 20s. This, coupled with the highest yields consistent with safety of principal will ensure financial security. There are significant effects from compounding money over time. Every year the decision is put off to save for later years will cost a person dearly by the time he reaches his 50s. For example, consider the decision to put off for one year a $2000 IRA investment at a 12% return. Starting it at age 31 instead of 30 will cost the executive almost $100,000 by age 65. What if the executive waits until age 35 to get started with his $2000 a year investment? He will then lose nearly $400,000 by age 65. Stated another way, the executive costs himself this $400,000 simply because he did not invest $167 a month for five years. $167 a month - that's less than an inexpensive second car payment. This $400,000 pool of money could provide the executive a $40,000 a year income at age 65, assuming a 10% return on invest-

Modifying the hydrophobicity of clay is necessary to accommodate large mycotoxin molecules such as zearalenone (ZEN). In this study, tricaprylmethylammonium (TCMA) chloride and common corn oil were used to modify clay. The results indicate that more than 90 percent of ZEN could be removed using clays modified by TCMA and corn oil at acidic and neutral pH due to the expansion of intergallery spacing as a result of TCMA surfactant intercalation within the clay-forming layers. The removal percentage depends on the pH and amount of clay used. Complete removal can be achieved at acidic pH and small clay amount.

In this study, various rib bolting scenarios were investigated to better understand the effectiveness of the support systems. A coal mass constitutive model is implemented to a distinct element method (DEM) code, and rib factor-of-safety (RibFOS) analyses were performed by applying strength reduction for the coal matrix and explicitly modeled face cleats. Ribs with various overburden depths and mining heights composed of solid banded bright coal were considered. Different scenarios such as rib bolt length and number of bolts were studied to quantify the effect of primary rib support density on rib stability. As a result of the unsupported coal rib analyses, a decaying exponential relationship is proposed between the mining height-overburden depth and the RibFOS. The developed coal rib models clearly show the coal-rib bolt interaction and illustrate how the addition of rib bolts restricts the movement of the coal rib. The results reveal that the strength-reduction method in DEM code with the coal-mass model can aid in the development of practical primary sup- port charts, which can help in the rib support design process.

The main reasons for the development of higher heat levels in German coal mines are the increasing depth of working with the con- sequent higher rock temperatures, increased use of electrical equipment, and increasing coal output due to concentration and mechanisation of workings. In place of the normal decentralised underground cooling plants, schemes and pilot plants have been developed to produce the required cooling capacities in central air cooling units, which then supply the cold air to the underground working points where needed.

Coal in most refuse ponds including those owned by Consolidation Coal Company can be recovered by froth flotation techniques. Laboratory studies show that the flotation conditions required for coal recovery varied greatly from pond to pond. The variables found to be most important for high coal recovery and low product ash were: a) the amount and type of flotation reagents and b) the degree of conditioning before flotation. Coal recovery at a rate of 0.504 kg/s (2 tons/hr) was demonstrated at a pond site employing a mobile froth flotation unit.

Carbon dioxide, a by-product of combustion reactions, is a greenhouse gas linked to climate change. At Michigan Technological University, we have studied the capture of CO2 using alkali scrubbing solutions in a pilot scale packed bed counter-current scrubbing column. To do this, we have simulated flue gas by combining streams of CO2 and compressed air. Real flue gas has impurities such as CO, SO2, and NOx, and has lower levels of O2 than our simulated flue gas. In order to study CO2 capture from a real flue gas, the Department of Chemical Engineering worked with the Facilities department to install a pilot scale scrubbing column in the Michigan Tech steam plant. Experiments were conducted using a sample stream of the flue gas from the boiler in the steam plant. Data collected from these experiments were compared to the data collected from identical experiments conducted on simulated flue gas in the lab. The capture efficiency of the real flue gas scrubbing column is discussed in this paper. BACKGROUND The most common equipment used to separate CO2 from a flue gas stream is a counter-current packed-bed scrubbing column. The department of Chemical Engineering at Michigan Technological University has two such pilot scale columns. In order to study the effect of impurities found in real flue gas, one is installed in a controlled laboratory using a simulated flue gas created by mixing CO2 and compressed air. This column will be used to establish a baseline for percent capture analysis and is displayed by figure 1. The second scrubbing column is identical to the first, and is installed in the Michigan Tech central energy plant. The plant produces up to 130,000 lb/hr of 80 psig steam to provide hot water and heat for campus buildings. A typical wintertime load burns around 25,000 SCFH of natural gas; this load releases 1.4 metric tons of CO2 per hour. The flue gas the steam plant produces is roughly 7.5% CO2 by volume. In order to study CO2 capture from this flue gas, a tap has been installed on the main exhaust duct which draws a sample of the flue gas into the pilot scale scrubbing column. Figure 2, a simplified diagram of the steam plant, shows that the tap was installed between the economizer and the stack condenser.

Introduction Until recently, there were many jobs for mineral engineering graduates. Traditionally, minerals-related career paths available to university graduates stem from rather standard offerings in the disciplines of mining, metallurgy, petroleum, geology, geophysical engineering, and mineral economics. Within each discipline, there exists many career opportunities. In fact, until fairly recently, the most difficult decision for most graduates was choosing among all the available alternatives. Unfortunately, this relative state of euphoria changed quickly and dramatically within the minerals sector. Within two or three years, graduates from minerals-related engineering disciplines found it exceedingly difficult - and then almost impossible - to secure employment in the minerals sector upon graduation. At the same time, there were dramatic reductions in production requirements and, ultimately, mine closings. This resulted in massive layoffs and often termination of professional personnel possessing significant and valuable industrial experience. Obviously, this worsened an already bad employment picture for those hoping to begin a career in minerals. Certainly, there is no universal agreement on what the future offers for the US minerals industry or the career opportunities associated with it. However, there are a number of considerations that deserve study by students, faculty, administrators, and industrial personnel before minerals-related career paths are chosen. Where Will the Jobs Be and How Many? Everyone is aware that the minerals industry is very cyclic. It is not surprising then that job opportunities for new graduates also fluctuate. Typically, there is a two-to-four year lag between industry's engineering manpower needs and the academic community's ability to produce this talent. Due to the response lag, there will necessarily be years when supply and demand do not match. Employment Projections It is extremely difficult to anticipate what the key career paths might be within the next few years. Considerable speculation remains with respect to whether activity in the US minerals sector over the short-, intermediate-, and long-term will improve, remain status quo, or further deteriorate. However, some information pertaining to the prospects for career opportunities in mining engineering was offered by Tingley and Ghose (ME, Sept. 1983, p. 1274) from a study performed by Fenvessy and Schwab. Results from this industry-sponsored survey suggest that the US will experience 700 more mining engineers than needed in 1985, 1300 in 1990, and 1800 in the year 2000. These conclusions were based on the assumptions that future graduate levels remain flat and demand increases 3.6% annually. Educators quickly argued that depressed job markets, coupled with university student mobility, would negate the assumption of flat mining graduate levels in the immediate future. Student Mobility Student mobility from one engineering discipline to another is high. This is perhaps best demonstrated by the tremendous growth in programs such as computer engineering and computer science at the expense of enrollments in the more traditional engineering programs. The ability and willingness of students to quickly change engineering disciplines in response to existing and perceived job market demands have created significant student, faculty, and resource dislocations within universities nationwide. Introduction The choice of using a dump or heap leaching process or a fine grinding-agitation leaching process is based on the grade and tonnage of the ore body. Low grade ore and small tonnages are best treated by a low-cost method, such as dump or heap leaching. Permeability, however, is the critical factor in a successful leaching operation, regardless of tonnage or grade. Without permeability in the leach bed, no percolation, no dissolution, no extraction, and no success are possible. Solution delivery to the ore is also essential. Solute-to-mineral contact is a requisite. The solute must be effectively strong and not be depleted in active dissolvers, such as acid, ferric iron, cyanide, and oxygen. It must also be moving across the mineral to be dissolved. No pockets of stagnant solution can be allowed. A third factor is recovery of the now-dissolved metal in the pregnant liquor. All such liquor should be gathered at a reasonable metal concentration to make further pumping and processing worthwhile. Control and recovery of pregnant solutions are probably the most ignored factors of solution mining. This stage in recovery is historically where many operations either fail or become viable. Permeability A permeable heap is normally achieved by taking into account heap building/construction and agglomeration/pelletizing. Even though heap building is critical for good permeability, it will not be discussed here. It has been described in detail by others. Instead, this analysis will concentrate on agglomeration and pelletizing. Differences between agglomeration and pelletizing are emphasized. Agglomeration is referred to when small particles are being attached to larger particles -the ore presents a complete size distribution. On the other hand, pelletizing is a process where all particles are fine (less than 850)µm or 20 mesh), as with mill tailings. The difference is important from two points of view: • Mechanical devices used to achieve the desired attaching action; and • Binder dosages. Mechanical Devices Due to the absence of large particles that fines can become attached to, pelletizing should be done in a centrifugal-action-based device, such as an inclined rotating plate, a rotary drum, or a series of belt-transfer points. In agglomeration, large particles play a part as a natural nucleus for the attaching action of fines. Hence, a tumbling action as strong as for pelletizing is not required. Common methods to accomplish agglomeration include: • Cascade belt system with either all belts moving forward or some of them moving forward and at least one moving backward; • Combination of belt plus inclined vibrating chute; • Large concrete mixer drum; and • Belt discharging directly onto stockpiled ore. The proper agglomeration system will depend basically on the size distribution of the ore and the amount and type of clays present. In all of the agglomerating systems described, the tumbling action takes place at the transfer points either from belt to belt, or from belt to inclined chute ore belt to ore pile. Usually, two or three mixing bars at each transfer point are also included to help the mixing action. Plows to move the ore around on a moving belt are also used.

Located near Ely, Nevada, the Robinson Mining District has produced gold since 1868 from the Ruth? porphyry copper system. Gold occurs in at least seven different deposit types, including porphyry copper ore, silica-pyrite replacements along favorable horizons, fault controlled silica bodies, intrusive breccias, stockworks in bornfels and in retrograde skarns. In all of these the primary controls localizing gold ore are structural .preparation and permeable hosts. Indicator elements associated with gold are Ag, As, Te, and to a lesser extent Sb and Tl. Pb, Zn and F are peripheral to gold or with it depending upon position within the system. The district has produced 87,000 kg (2.8 million ounces) of gold thus far. An additional 19,300 kg (620,000 ounces) of reserves are established, and well over 31,100 kg (1,000,000 ounces) of reserves are anticipated. I

This paper summarizes the current research trends in the ventilation design for the construction of very long tunnels, and presents the results of leakage flow measurements in three auxiliary ventilation systems. The study includes an estimation of an important design parameter, namely, the leakage path resistance, and a discussion of its effects on the overall efficiency of a ventilation system. A sample problem is used to illustrate the calculations.

The Bond ball mill grindability test is one of the most common metrics used in the mining industry for ore hardness measurements. The test is an important part of the Bond work index methodology for designing and measuring the efficiency of mineral grinding circuits. In spite of being called “Bond’s Law,” the work index equations are not a law of nature; but rather an empirically measured regression of a large data set collected by the Allis- Chalmers corporation in the period between 1930 and 1952. As a regression, it is valid within a specific “calibration space,” and great care is required when deviating the test procedures or observing results that are outside of that calibration space. This paper is a collected summary of other works by the Authors that describe feed sizes, product sizes, quality control checks, and other information about interpreting the test and using its results. Examples of adjustments that are sometimes required when using the test are: changing the test product (P80), and coping with a feed that is too fine to apply the “proper” feed preparation steps (such as is sometimes observed from HPGR or SAGDesign product testing). Related metrics, like the Morrell Mib value and Levin B value will be discussed, along with recommendations for their use on design projects. The intended audience is any user of laboratory work index test data.

Carlin Gold Mining Company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Newmont Mining Corporation and is located 76 kilometers north west of Elko, Nevada. Multiple bench open pit mining methods are being used to mine 24.5 Mt of ore and waste per year. Mining started in 1964 and up through 1983 Carlin has mined 138 Mt of ore and waste and has milled 13.8 Mt of ore. Selective mining of carbonaceous and oxide ores together with a good grade control program have been key factors in the success of the operation. This paper will present the raining methods and the mining equipment being utilized to make Carlin Gold Mining Company a very profitable operation while mining and milling low-grade gold ore.

Perhaps the hottest item on the agendas of most state legislators this year is the state budget. The main question: Where will all the dollars come from to finance health care programs, state jobs, unemployment compensation programs, and on and on? This is especially so since people are out of work, business bankruptcies are up, sales are down, and incoming revenues from some sources have decreased or dried up. A sure bet is that state taxes will be increased in some form or another. The mining industry could face increased income taxes, property taxes, severance taxes, or even a host of new taxes (if the state does not already have them) like a gross receipts tax, investment tax, or tax on revenues made outside state borders. That's bad news for an already depressed industry, even though increased taxes may be the least of the industry's worries in the current economic climate. While reopening existing mines and developing most new mineral projects depends primarily on higher commodity prices, new taxes still could pose long term concerns for mine project development. Just how mineral tax law impacts a project is not easy to figure. It involves a complex set of calculations based on interpretations of numerous federal, state, and local tax laws that change almost annually. At best, projections of tax effects for the life of a mine are educated guesses. At the same time, projections are necessary to evaluate the economic feasibility of a mineral project. At a recent Technology Transfer Seminar, the US Bureau of Mines introduced a computer software program designed to evaluate the feasibility of a mineral project and to determine the tax effects on the project's discounted cash flow rate of return (DCFROR). The program, called MINSIM, began in 1967 as a 200-statement FORTRAN II program for evaluating a hypothetical large-scale open-pit gold mine. This single-commodity oriented program employed discrete simulation techniques and a continuous DCFROR was used to measure the effect of changes in revenues and costs. Over the past 15 years, MINSIM has developed into a program 70 to 100 times larger than the original. Basically, it will analyze costs and parameters specific to an identified deposit, then determine the DCFROR. Or by using a specified DCFROR, it will determine the primary commodity price required to attain that specified rate of return. MINSIM, which is explained in detail in this article, is available from the Division of Minerals Availability, USBM free of charge. Written in FORTRAN IV, it comes on punch cards or magnetic tape and is compatible with most major computer systems. The MINSIM Program The main objective of any freeenterprise mining venture is to make a profit. To determine profitability of a given project, alternate methods of operating and financing must be evaluated. That is the purpose of MINSIM. While there are a number of methods of evaluating the economic profitability of a mining project, MINSIM uses the Discounted Cash Flow Rate of Return (DCFROR) method as its major criterion because DCFROR considers the time value of money and gives the truest measure of profitability. One disadvantage is that the calculations are deposit oriented. In other words, MINSIM analyzes only those costs and parameters specific to the deposit. It cannot be used to evaluate the overall corporate picture. The program is designed to simultaneously handle five different commodities and a leach operation for any type of mining project. For example, analysis of a coal project would include only one commodity-coal at the mine mouth. Analysis of a copper operation might include numerous commodities-from the raw material to the refined product. Input MINSIM considers capital investment-recoverable exploration, acquisition, and development costs; depreciable capital investments such as mine plant and equipment, mill plant and equipment, and infrastructure costs; all general and commodity specific operating costs; and the cost of alternate financing methods. The program has the capacity to incorporate different types of depletion allowances, numerous commodity-dependent severance taxes, variations of property taxes, and many methods for calculating state or provincial taxes. There are even many different ways to calculate federal and national taxes. The capacity to handle tax variations is generated from an internal subroutine in the program called the "open file." The user can reconstruct, customize, or evaluate any kind of tax desired. Outputs Given this kind of capacity for numerous input parameters, MINSIM is capable of the follow¬ing major outputs:

Extraction of crude ores and minerals inevitably produces various by-products either as a result of nonusable residues or as waste by-products from process operations. Thus for each 100 tons of coal extracted in a strip mine operation, one can expect to produce 25 tons, or more, of mine refuse. In addition, the amount of ash produced from the burning of coal will represent 10 to 20 percent of the weight of coal burned. With the advent of lime/limestone scrubbers now being installed on many power plants, an additional by-product is produced that in most instances is equal in volume to the sluiced fly ash. Statistics developed by the National Ash Association have indicated that sluiced waste from power plants in the United States currently exceeds 25 million tons per year (dry basis). Overall mineral industry statistics (copper mines, etc.) indicate better than 200 million tons per year. In the past it was general practice to send most of these waste materials to holding ponds or lagoons simply as a means of disposal or "throwaway" of unwanted by-products. Unfortunately modern society has reached a stage where these large quantities of waste materials are creating monumental environmental and economic problems that need urgent attention. Among these problems are concern for loss of future usable land, pollution of ground water, loss of potential mineral reserves, and loss of opportunities to recycle or use these by-products for the benefit of future generations. An example of the latter is the serious shortages of construction quality aggregates that can be replaced with some of the by-products produced from waste materials from the extractive and chemical industries.

The current study investigates the effect of microwave processing on low-grade banded iron ore using charcoal, coking coal, and non-coking coal. Charcoal showed better microwave heating response at low temperatures, and the coals exhibit better heating response at higher temperatures. Low carbon dosage ~ 12% is sufficient to generate concentrate with 61.8% iron grade and ~6% for 94.8% iron recovery comprising of magnetite phase suitable for iron-making applications. The process separation efficiency of ~ 95% is achieved at 6% carbon dosage and decreases with an increase in carbon due to formation of the fayalite phase. The metallization degree showed a strong dependency on reductant dosage and achieved amaximumvalue of 22.7%at 18%charcoal. The comparison of ore with pure iron oxide and the synthetic mixture of iron oxide indicated that the underlying bonding due to banded structure enhances the Joule heating during microwave irradiation and thereby aids in attaining higher temperature and better separation.

This paper will present a review of the underground leaching of remnant copper mineralization left as a result of the block cave mining operation at the Lakeshore Mine in Casa Grande, Arizona.

High-value materials, such as gold, platinum and other precious metals, are subject to loss through unauthorized removal from mines, smelters, refiners and other places where such materials are processed. A study by Gastrow (2001) determined that between 1994 and 1998 an average of 603 kg/a (1,330 lb/year) of gold was stolen from South African mines and subsequently recovered. This does not include the gold that was stolen but not recovered. At 2011 prices, 603 kg/a (1,330 lb/year) of gold would be worth approximately $33 million. Mine security personnel believe that the unrecovered stolen gold far exceeds what is recovered (Gastrow 2001). Traditionally, metal detectors have been used to screen personnel leaving secure areas to discourage such unauthorized removal. However, with the current near-record prices of gold, platinum and other precious metals, it has become worthwhile for people exiting a facility to walk out with quantities of product that are too small for ordinary metal detectors to register, resulting in substantial financial losses.
