INTRODUCTION The support of openings in weak sandstones can be achieved by spraying on a liquid grout which will soak in and harden to form a shell. In the St. Peter sandstone of the Minneapolis-St. Paul area of Minnesota compressive strength is increased from about 0.7 MPa (100 psi) to over 7 MPa (1000 psi) to depths of 152 mm (6 in.). A shell of this strength and thickness can pro¬vide support much as shotcrete does but at lower cost. If the spray-grouted shell is inadequate for the support needed, it provides a good base for shotcrete application, which is often difficult in weak or friable sand¬stones because the fresh shotcrete peels off along with a thin layer of sandstone. The spray-grouted technique was initially developed at the Civil and Mineral Engineering Dept. of the University of Minnesota using funds provided by RANN Div. of the National Science Foundation. It was used as temporary support in a 3-m (10-ft) wide, 3700-m (12,000-ft) long storm water drain tunnel by the Minneapolis Sewer Construction Dept. Much of the field development at this construction project was carried out with the cooperation of the personnel of the city of Minneapolis. It also was used for temporary support in a 3.3-m (11-ft) wide, 1800-m (6000-ft) long storm water tunnel built in 1978-1980 for the Minnesota Dept. of Transportation in Minneapolis. In 1975, 2000 m (6500 ft) of 1.5-m (5-ft) wide utility tunnels were spray-grouted for final lining. A 50-m (150-ft) long, 1.2-m (4-ft) wide test tunnel built at the university in 1974 was sprayed for half its length and is being observed for long-term behavior which to date (1981) is good. GROUT MATERIALS The requirements for the liquid grout are more severe than those for injection grouting. Besides being able to penetrate the rock and develop sufficient strength, it must have the following properties: (1) be nontoxic, noncombustible, and have a low odor for spraying under¬ground; (2) have controllable viscosity and setting time for adjusting to the permeability of the sandstone and the required depth of penetration; and (3) must "wet" the sandstone and develop capillary "draw" to penetrate to the required depth. A sodium silicate-based grout with the proper setting agent meets these requirements in the local St. Peter sandstone which has a uniform grain size dis¬tribution curve with D,,, = 0.1 mm, permeability of about 10 to 20 darcys, a porosity of about 25%, and less than 5% of silt size or smaller. It is 97 to 99% pure SiO2. The grout mix consists of Philadelphia Quartz Co. Type N sodium silicate and Celtite 55 Terraset Spray Grade (SG) distributed by Celtite Inc., Cleveland, OH. A volume mix ratio of 100:9:125 for sodium silicate to setting agent to water produces a grout with two to four centipoise viscosity, and initial set at 20°C of 20 min. Setting time is temperature dependent, being longer at lower temperatures, but can be adjusted by varying the setting agent concentration a few percentage points. APPLICATION The application is simple. Spray the grout on the surface until the desired penetration is achieved. Penetration rates of about 5 mm (0.2 in.) per min. are realized in the St. Peter sandstone for up to 152 mm (6 in.) of penetration (30 min. of spraying). The set time must be longer than the spraying time. The spray nozzle should be moved back and forth at a rate that minimizes runoff due to surface buildup. Both a single large hand-propelled nozzle and multiple small machine propelled nozzles have been used successfully. The pumping and mixing equipment used consisted of: (1) a hand-held, hand-pumped, 11-L (3-gal) gar¬den sprayer for test patches (mix by shaking); (2) 76-L (20 gal) batch mixing in barrels with small electric pumps for spraying and mixing; (3) two component pumps consisting of Hypro Model 5300 piston pumps (Hypro Pump Co., St. Paul, MN) on a common shaft driven by an electric motor. The sodium silicate is premixed with a portion of the water and the setting agent is mixed with the rest of the water. The two components are combined and mixed just before the nozzle; and (4) a proportioner metering the setting agent just before the nozzle with the water and sodium silicate premixed and pumped from the surface. The proportioner permits the bulk of the grout to be pumped through a single pipe or hose with only the setting agent stored underground. This is efficient and low in cost. COST The grout mix costs about $0.20/L ($0.75 per gal) in 1978 dollars. Filling all the voids 100 mm (4 in.) deep (25% initial porosity) would have a materials cost of about $5.40/m2 ($0.50 per sq ft). The labor cost of application is usually less than the material cost for normal tunnel jobs. A pump and proportioner cost less than $1000. Approximately forty years ago, the military services began a realistic investigation of the problems involved with the replacement of high pressure gaseous systems with liquid oxygen systems. The program was temporarily discontinued because of numerous State-of-the-Art problems. Ten years later, interest in the liquid oxygen breathing concept was revived. Initial testing of this concept was completed in 1946. The ensuing years have seen the general acceptance of many cryogenic breathing systems for airborne applications. The inherent features of weight savings (approximately 70%) and space savings (approximately 80%) make it very desirable for high performance military aircraft. A typical aircraft system consists of a storage container with appropriate integrated control valving (the liquid oxygen converter), a heat exchanger, breathing regulator, and oxygen mask. Normally the liquid converter is located in the aircraft wheel well for easy access by ground crew personnel and the breathing regulator is mounted in the cockpit where the pilot can connect his oxygen mask. An aircraft system such as this will provide the pilot with eight hours of breathing oxygen after a 24 hour standby period. Early in 1960, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration sought a means of providing a cooling system for their personnel involved in fueling the rockets used in the space program. The progress results of a pilot plant study on the effects of ball top size and other mill operating parameters are reported. Test series on taconite and quartzite crude ores using a 1.7m diameter primary mill in closed circuit with a vibrating screen indicate clear trends on the improvements of mill throughput and power consumption when using larger diameter balls. Possible effects on mill liner and ball consumption as well as future research plans are discussed.

This paper discusses the influence of frother type and dosage on recovery/selectivity in coal/sulfide mineral flotation as a function of particle size. It is shown that different frother structures do exhibit quite different but consistent performance characteristics depending on the underlying particle size ranges involved as well as the dosage levels of both the frother and collector. The data presented on existing commercial frothers end some new special purpose experimental frothers is used to illustrate some general operator guidelines on proper frother selection and use.

This paper reports on recent modeling efforts to analyze the eastern U.S. steam coal market with a cross-sectional econometric as well as a quadratic programming approach. The background to coal modeling is examined first. The particular aspect of the steam coal market to be modeled are then presented and the corresponding coal model described. Both empirical results and rigorous mathematic pertubation analysis are presented. Conclusions are then drawn regarding potential modeling applications in the policy area.

The Kubota surface melting system has been under development since 1975. It has found commercial application on the melting of municipal sludge, and ash from solid waste. The melted product has physical properties allowing its use as a substitute for aggregate in cement and asphaltic construction. Long-term stability, appropriate taxation and incentive policies are essential to attract and stimulate investment in the mineral sector. An outline of Ontario's $4.6 billion industry and associated tax incentives is presented. Producers are offered incentives under The Mining Tax Act, federal and provincial income tax acts for exploration and development by reducing Me after tax cost to 13-25¢ for each dollar spent. The Mining Tax Act provides generous processing incentives which have positive effects in enhancing investment and economic advantages of building processing facilities. Non-mining companies and entrepreneurial individuals can receive 25% of eligible exploration expenditures in grants/tax credits under the Ontario Mineral Exploration Program.

The Hansen orebody is a large (1 2 million kg U3O8, 0.08% U3O8 average grade) sandstone-type uranium deposit in the Eocene Echo Park Formation of central Colorado. The deposit occurs in carbonaceous braided-stream sandstones that are part of a wet-alluvial-fan complex that prograded eastward across a narrow strike-slip basin. The Echo Park basin is one of a series of basins that formed along the east side of the Colorado Plateau as it was translated northward during the Eocene culmination of the Laramide orogeny. The valleys of east- and southeast- flowing perennial streams, whose courses were transected by the subsiding Echo Park basin, were filled with permeable volcanic and sedimentary rocks during construction of the Oligocene Thirtynine Mile volcanic field. These paleovalleys funneled large volumes of uranium-bearing ground waters through the braided-stream facies of the wet alluvial fan. Uplift of a basement horst downfan from the Hansen orebody reduced transmissivity and helped maintain a reducing environment in the Hansen area; this later became an important factor in preservation of the Hansen orebody. The horst also deflected uranium- bearing ground waters upward into the Oligocene Tallahassee Creek Conglomerate where they formed the Picnic Tree orebody (1.1 million kg U3O8, 0.09% U3O8 average grade) in an altered ash-fall tuff that is essentially barren above the Hansen orebody. Several potential source rocks for uranium are present and range in age from Proterozoic quartz monzonites of Silver Plume age to lower and upper Oligocene ash-flow and ash-fall tuffs. Uranium may have been contributed to the Hansen orebody several times from different sources. Uranium and thorium analyses of ash-flow tuffs indicate that ample uranium was released during cooling and ground-water leaching to form several Hansen orebodies. The host sandstones are conspicuously altered, and their initial high permeability has been greatly reduced by precipitation of intergranular cements, especially clays and opal C-T. The alteration and cementation mineral assemblages and the chemical composition of stagnant ground waters recovered from pump tests indicate that uranium deposition occurred under alkaline, reducing conditions preceded and/or accompanied by bacterial production of framboidal pyrite.

Glass sands fall into that extremely select category of mineral deposits that requires a fantastic degree of natural concentration (95% +) of a single component before they can even be considered as ores suitable for further refinement. The combination of geological factors that has produced such an environment of "mineralogical single-mindedness" has appeared only rarely. Factors that require consideration in the economic evaluation of a potential glass-sand deposit can be grouped into three categories: 1) geological (e.g., size, shape, structure); 2) petrographic (e.g., grain size, accessory minerals, nature of iron contaminants); 3) geographic - political (e.g., proximity to consumer, size of market, zoning restrictions). Of particular con ern is the nature of the iron contamination. Iron-bearing species appear as 1) accessory mineral grains, either detrital or authigenic, 2) cements, 3) grain coatings, and 4) quartz-grain inclusions. Selection of the cheapest form of beneficiation requires precise information on the mineralogy of the iron species and their detailed petrography. Because of the antipathetic relationships, in many parts of the United States and Canada between the geographical locations of glass plants and the geological distribution of glass sands, the selection of ac suitable source for a particular glass plant may be dichotomous. One may seek either an exceedingly pure "classic" type glass sand that is relatively distant and whose cost includes a major transportation charge or a relatively proximate and somewhat "impure" source whose cost includes a substantial fee for beneficiation.

By international standards, Indian coal seams are not very gassy. In some of the major coalfields such as Singareni, Wardha, Pench, Chirimiri, Rewa and Talcher Coalfields practically no methane is emitted from the coal seams. Even in the coalfields of Ranigang, Jharia, Bokaro and Karanpura, all of which are situated in the basin of the Damodar river, only a few mines are faced with excessive gas emission problems. But the number of such mines is increasing as deeper reserves are being worked and already the exploitation of some of the best quality coal reserves in the country is held up pending measures for control of methane emission in these mines. Even in mines having no previous history of gas emission, methane has been met near dykes and faults. This was dramatically revealed by an explosion in Dhori colliery in 1965 wherein 268 persons got killed. Until that time, Dhori colliery was considered as a non-gassy mine but on that fateful day gas came to the workings through a freshly exposed fault plane. Similar incidences of ignition of firedamp in so-called non-gassy mines have also occured in the past, for example, in Chapui Khas and Samla Dalurband collieries, but the casualty figures were not as high. After the Dhori explosion, all Indian coal seams have been declared to be gassy, whether presence of methane is detected in the workings or not.

The seismic refraction technique is probably the most popular geophysical method of bedrock profiling in geotechnical site investigations but is somewhat restricted by the inherent assumptions in the method. This paper describes how Hales' method of profile interpretation is modified to overcome the assumptions of increasing velocity and layer thickness with depth when only first arrival data is available. A further expansion of Hales method enables presentation of refraction data in a form whereby bedrock features, such as changes in velocity, relief and dip in particular, are more readily recognized. Characteristic curves of the more common bedrock features are presented as an aid to bedrock feature recognition.

Knight Piésold and Co. hosted its annual roundtable discussion on March 17, 2011 at the Stockman Hotel and Casino in Elko, NV. The theme for Roundtable 2011 was, ?High density tailings, paste, and filtered tailings,? although the topic may well have been subtitled, ?Don?t prematurely rule out any technologies before they are given their day in court.? Bryan Ulrich, Knight Piésold?s local representative, as well as Tom Kerr from Knight Piésold?s office in Denver, CO, were on hand to help facilitate the discussion. Ulrich and Kerr are senior vice president and president of Knight Piésold?s U.S. practice, respectively. The event played host to more than 30 attendees from several western states. Attendees included personnel from a dozen mining properties and various corporate offices. There were also attendees from manufacturing and specialist consulting firms who have been providing services to various high-density tailings, paste and filtered tailings operations worldwide. It may be noted that the term ?filtered tailings? is used in this discussion. Alternative terms, such as ?dry stack? or ?dewatered tailings,? should be avoided whenever possible, as such terms tend to give a false sense about the nature of the material since these materials typically still retain a significant amount of moisture.

Despite lower prices and the uncertain future of nuclear power, uranium continued to be the big attraction in 1979 exploration activity. Uranium again dominated exploration programs across the US-not only in primary producing states such as New Mexico and Wyoming, but in potential producing areas from the northern counties of Minnesota to the Grandfather Mountain region of North Carolina. The moratorium on uranium leasing was lifted in Colorado and Montana, and exploration activity intensified accordingly. In Wyoming, what may be the biggest uranium deposit in the state was discovered by Anaconda Copper Co. near Jeffrey City, but in general, there were few major discoveries and activity was concentrated on existing exploration programs. The Department of Energy expects 1979 uranium exploration expenditures to total $339 million, compared to the $314 million spent by industry in 1978. Surface exploration and development drilling in 1979 is estimated at 16.1 Mm, up slightly from 1978 figures. Gold demanded its share of the spotlight in 1979. Soaring prices lured prospectors, investors, operators, and speculators to Alaska, California, Colorado, and Washington in a small-scale gold fever. Exploration for molybdenum remained strong in Alaska, Colorado, and Washington, where mineralization at the Mt. Tolman prospect is now estimated at 816 Mt averaging 0.09% copper and 0.10% molybdenum disulfide. Again this year, one of the major deterrents to exploration was the drive to set aside huge areas of land as wilderness preserves. In Alaska, where Interior Secretary Cecil Andrus has withdrawn millions of acres under the Antiquities Act, BP Alaska decided to close its Anchorage office, reportedly due to the lack of public lands available for mineral exploration. In both geophysical and geochemical activity, the year is best characterized as one of consolidation and development of previous advances in the state of the art, without any fundamental breakthroughs. Many companies were active in the development of instrumentation. Continuing interest in spectral IP resulted in the introduction of two instruments, one by Phoenix Geophysics, the other to be announced shortly by Geotronics Corp. Radiometric and borehole logging equipment received considerable emphasis, reflecting the continued interest in uranium exploration. The research is located within Asuncion and Cospan districts, which according to their geological features in contrast with previous studies pointing out Au, Mo and Pb anomalies create an environment of prospective interest. The objective is to use ASTER Satellite Images to identify ore-bearing hydrothermal alteration zones. To do this, processing techniques such as the combination of bands by RGB 943 and 461, band ratio 4/6, 4/5, 5/8 and 2/1 to identify advanced argillic, argillic to phyllic and propylitic alterations. In addition, indices defined by Ninomiya were used as a third technique in order to reinforce the data obtained from the previous techniques. The results in the study area are confirmed by the SAM spectral mapping technique using spectral signatures from the USGS library. Identifying kaolinite, alunite and pyrophyllite, assemblages of the advanced argillic alteration. Concluding in 3 areas of interest with the band ratios, 5 areas with the Ninomiya indexes and 9 areas validated with SAM, which were contrasted in 13 areas of prospective interest with well-marked argillic alteration.

INTRODUCTION The General Chemical Soda Ash Operation located near Green River, Wyoming produces about 4.5 Mt of trona per year. In July 1989, Mine Ventilation Services Inc. performed a ventilation survey of this complex trona mine which had thirteen active panels spread over 36 square kilometers. The ventilation survey and subsequent study showed that the intake shaft air velocities were at their practical limits (Wallace and Rogers, 1987). The need for additional intake capacity was immediate. The ventilation network modeling delineated the best location for this new intake shaft as it applied to the 5 year ventilation plan. Unfortunately, this location, 6.5 kilometers from the soda ash processing plant, would make heating this intake air very costly. Presently, the intake air is heated by heat exchangers which use waste heat from the plant. Air heating during the winter months is necessary for miner comfort and to prevent potential freezing of water lines in the mine. It was decided to examine the feasibility of heating the air geothermally by coursing it through an old production panel. This method of air heating has been used in this region with good results at the Stauffer Chemical Operation (now Rhone-Poulenc) (Moore, 1985). In 1990, a geothermal heating study examined four different production shaft/panel configurations and a workable design was found. The operators at the General Chemical Soda Ash Operations acted on this design and began raise boring a ventilation shaft in the Spring of 1991. This paper describes the ventilation system, briefly, and the geothermal heating studies performed. Findings of the 1990 geothermal studies are then compared to field data acquired in the Winter of 1992. THE VENTILATION SYSTEM The ventilation system at General Chemical had four shafts serving the mining horizon in July 1989; three of these shafts are located at the Northwest end of the mine. The active work areas had progressed to the South over the past years and supplying ventilation has become increasingly difficult. The 6.1 meter diameter #3 Production shaft and the men and materials compartment of the 6.1 meter diameter #2 Split Shaft had reached their air velocity limits. Conversely, the 4.6 meter diameter #5 Exhaust Shaft was under utilized. Ventilation studies showed the conversion of the 3.7 meter diameter #1 Exhaust Shaft to an intake would provide adequate intake capacity for two years. The next option to improve ventilation was the addition of an intake shaft at the southeast part of the mine at the intersection of H Mains South(H-M-S)and J Mains East(J-M-E) (See Figure 1). A service shaft has been planned for the extreme Southeast end in the late 1990's. Ventilation network analyses showed this interim intake shaft would have to be at least 2.5 meters in diameter to postpone the service shaft construction beyond 1995. The greater the size of the borehole, the further the construction could be postponed. In October 1991, General Chemical commissioned the 4.57 meter diameter #4 Ventilation Shaft near the junction of H-M-S and J-M-E as shown in Figure 1. The L95 panel would be used for air heating as described in the geothermal heating section to follow. GEOTHERMAL STUDIES Geothermal heating studies were performed by MVS Inc. in May 1990. Using a modified code of CLIMSIM, an underground mine climatic simulation model, several different shaft/panel configurations were examined to see which would provide adequate air heating during the winter months. CLIMSIM simulates heat flow into a single underground airway. The program was used to evaluate the heat flow to and from the airway surface and to calculate the resulting change in dry bulb temperature of the ventilating air. CLIMSIM uses inlet air conditions, airway characteristics, and rock thermal properties input by the user to predict the variation of psychrometric and thermodynamic parameters along an underground airway.

Introduction In October 1983, Rio Algom Ltd. decided to develop the East Kemptville tin deposit. This decision was the result of intensive geological and metallurgical evaluation work, as well as careful studies of environmental and marketing aspects. The property is located about 54 km (34 miles) northeast of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, near the village of East Kemptville. Geology The geological setting is a granitic intrusive at the contact with metasediment. The tin mineralization is in the form of cassiterite (SnO2), which is about 80% tin. Sulfides are associated with the deposit containing silver, copper, and zinc, which are recoverable as byproducts. The mineralization is associated with quartz veins and greisen alteration. In the center of the deposit, the zones are so close together they have the appearance of a massive or porphyry type deposit. Ore Reserves The mine plan is based on 56 Mt (62 million st) at 0.165% tin. Up to the ninth year, mill feed will average about 0.2% and lower grade material will be stockpiled. In later years, the average grade will be 0.16% tin. A 0.08% cutoff grade is planned for the entire 17 years of production. East Kemptville is a relatively low grade tin deposit, and only a combination of favorable circumstances has made it economic. • The ore body is situated at, or very close to the surface, permitting mining by open-pit methods at a very low stripping ratio. • The tin occurs in relatively large crystals that allow for good recovery by gravity techniques. • It is ideally located in a well-settled area, with all essential infrastructural requirements already in place. • The positive and cooperative response from various governmental agencies involved are encouraging. Mine Plan The mine plan incorporates an initial pit, followed by three expansions to the ultimate pit. Mining will be at 14 kt/d (15,000 stpd) and will include 9 kt (10,000 st) of ore plus 5 kt (5,500 st) of waste and low grade. After five years, the mining rate will increase to 21 kt/d (27,500 stpd). It is planned to drill vertical 165-mm (6.5-in.) blast holes on a 6-x 6-m (20- x 20-ft) pattern. Bulk slurry explosives will be used to break the rock. Loading will be with hydraulic shovels into 70 t (77 st) haulage trucks. The trucks will deliver the ore to a 13 x 20 m (42 x 65 ft) gyratory crusher, where it will be crushed to 150 mm (6 in.). Secondary and tertiary cone crushers will be used to further crush the ore to 13 mm (0.5 in.). Process Design Tin extraction technology is practically unknown in North America, but Rio Tinto Zinc, which has a 53% ownership in Rio Algom, is involved in tin production in the UK. Rio Algom has used this experience and expertise in metallurgical evaluation work and in tin-related aspects of plant design. Mineralogical and metallurgical test work have been performed, both on laboratory and pilot plant scales. Mineralogical work was done largely in the UK, the laboratory test program was carried out at the Lakefield research facility in Ontario, and pilot plant work was conducted in Australia. This program has resulted in significant improvements in recovery and concentrate grades, over best projections that could be made before this work was carried out. Concentrating Process The concentrator is being designed to process about 9 kt/d (10,000 stpd). The first step is to reduce the size of the ore to -700 µm (-24 mesh) in a rod mill/ball mill grinding circuit. The ball mill will operate in closed circuit with high capacity banana-type screens. The European Economic Community (The Common Market) is now shifting from I a coal oriented to an oil oriented economy. The proportion of energy supplied by oil has increased from only 13% in 1950 to 38% in 1962, and will approach 50% by 1970. In the past five years Common Market petroleum demand has in- creased 15% per year compared with only 3% per year in the United States. This rapid shift to oil can be explained by looking at oil's competition, First; there is simply not enough other energy - European coal, natural gas and hydro-electric power - to meet the demand, Secondly, oil?s primary competing energy in the Common Market is coal, and Community coal is high-priced - it costs more than two and a half times as much as U. S, coal at the pithead. The third reason for the shift to oil is consumer preference for the ease of handling, convenience and cleanliness of liquid fuels. As these reasons suggest, much of the shift to oil and the resulting growth in demand would have occurred whether or not the Common Market organization had existed. On the other hand, the Common Market has stimulated the use of oil by causing a higher rate of energy consumption, and oil has been the beneficiary of most of this growth.

The Minerals Industry makes heavy demands for and on its Material Handling equipment. It also gives progressive management the opportunity for considerable savings, ad consequently increased profits. In some cases, cost of Materials Handling amounts to 40°/o of the total cost of the ultimate product. Handling costs are hidden in overhead, indirect labor, excessive maintenance, productive workers performing handling tasks, and, a great many more. Even though Materials Handling is the oldest occupation of mankind, it is only within the past twenty years that it has emerged as a specialized field. While this industry has made full use of all types of mechanical and vibratory conveyors, pneumatic conveyors in their proper application can be a distinct asset. me use of pneumatic conveyors by this industry however is limited- to a certain extent by the particle size of your products through the various phases of manufacture, as well as their bulk density. However, with increasing knowledge of the fluidization of dry materials, their use is becoming more wide spread.

The impact of surface coal mining on the geologic materials and ground water in different geologic settings is being investigated by the Illinois State. Geological Survey at three abandoned surface mines in Illinois. At a site near Ottawa in La Salle County, the overburden prior to mining consisted largely of pyritic shale; sand was the major component of the overburden and spoil at a mine near Coal City, Grundy County. Clays, lacustrine silts, and some shale and limestone were the dominant premining overburden materials at a mine near Harrisburg, in Saline County. Ground-water elevations at Coal City and Harrisburg are approximately at premining levels, whereas at Ottawa they are near the base of the spoil. Ground-water quality has deteriorated at all three sites, especially at Ottawa and Harrisburg.

Introduction One hundred years ago, a recent college graduate created the US aluminum industry. He found an economic way to crack the primeval bond that makes the metal so special. Aluminum doesn't "rust" - oxidize progressively. Rather, when exposed to air, it instantly forms a gem-hard but microscopic oxide coating. This seals off oxygen from the metal underneath. Scratch it and the seal reforms instantly. That tight chemical bond is the reason the metal is not found in nature; it exists only as a compound. The bond had to be broken to free the shiny metal. But once it is free, that self-sealing protection, alongside a remarkable strength-to-weight ratio, offers a marvelous material. Until 100 years ago, finding a way to do that economically was a challenge that defied science. Then it was solved, in a remarkable coincidence, on both sides of the Atlantic. And the way was paved for a material that would become the second most widely used metal in the world. Until that time, aluminum was a rare and precious metal. But then two young scientists independently invented the process that took aluminum outside the laboratory and into applications ranging from pots and pans to spacecraft. Discovery of aluminum Other major metals - copper, iron, lead, gold, and silver - had been used for thousands of years. But aluminum was entirely unknown until 1782, when French chemist Antoine Lavoisier suspected its presence. It was not actually discovered until Sir Humphry Davy, in England, detected it in clay in 1807. It was first isolated as a free metal only in 1825, by Denmark's Hans Christian Oersted. For years, laboratory methods yielded aluminum only in tiny amounts costing about $1200/kg ($545 per lb) - $13,333/kg ($6000 per lb) in today's dollars. Methods developed by French scientist Henri Sainte-Claire Deville in 1854 cut the cost to about $200/kg ($90 per lb). King Frederick VII of Denmark had a helmet of aluminum and gold. And Emperor Napoleon III of France reportedly served his most exalted guests at a state dinner with aluminum plates. He left the lower ranks to dine from pure gold. Deville and others continued to reduce production costs. But the price of aluminum still rivaled silver - $31/kg ($14 per lb) versus about $35/kg ($16 per lb) for silver. Then in 1884, a 2.8-kg (6.25-1b), 230-mm-tall (9-in.-tall) aluminum pyramid was cast as the tip of the Washington Monument. It was probably the first architectural use of aluminum. And it is still there after more than a century. The attractive properties of aluminum were obvious: it is lightweight but strong, conducts heat and electricity, reflects light and other electromagnetic radiation, and resists corrosion. But its commercial promise was blocked by its cost. In 1885, the price of aluminum was $17.70/kg ($8 per lb). It stayed there for the next couple of years until the Hall-Heroult process brought it down sharply. Hall-Heroult process lowers aluminum costs The characteristic that kept aluminum hidden so long continued to thwart chemists. Aluminum clings to oxygen so tightly that it is never found as a free metal in nature, and it is hard to break that bond chemically. The best chemical methods of the 1880s required sodium, and sodium itself was expensive. At Oberlin College in Ohio, chemistry professor Frank Fanning Jewett advised his students that anyone who could make aluminum inexpensive would do humanity a favor and get rich as well.
