The Nucoalyzer (On-Line Nuclear Analyzer) is a new method recently made comercially available for monitoring the elemental composition of a process stream. Applications for the Nucoalyzer include grading ore on a conveyor belt before or after it has gone through primary crushing, monitoring the slurry being transported in a pipe to the concentrator, and monitoring the stream of concentrate or the tailings from the concentrator. The Nucoalyzer may also be used at the smelter to monitor elements in the feed that include copper, sulfur, iron and silicon where a uniform feed is desired. The advantage of the Nucoalyzer over most other techniques are (a) it performs the measurement directly on the process with no sampling necessary, (b) the analysis can be performed on streams of particulate and slurries, and (c) the system does not have to make contact with the material it measures. These Nucoalyzers are operating at coal fired power plants and several more are about to be placed in service. This paper discusses the principles of operation of the Nucoalyzer, our experience in the field, application of minicomputers to data reduction, and potential applications in the ferrous and non-ferrous industries.

Concentrate flowrates have been measured for the flotation of -100 mesh Lower Kittaning coal in a computer controlled 0.076 m x 3.5 m pilot flotation column. The variables studied were recovery zone height), air flow rate, and solid feed concentration. The size distribution of concentrate and tailings samples were determined. The results obtained show that the concentrate flow rate was independent of collection zone height, but dependent on the gas flow rate, solid loading and particle size. New correlations for column carrying capacity and yield are provided as a function of these fundamental operational parameters.

Bio-treatment of uranium contaminated soils from Fernald using the bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was investigated. The experimental results showed that extraction of uranium upto 99 percent from soils were obtained with 10 percent pulp density suspension and with addition of iron (3000 mg/l) after bio-remediation time of seven days. Application of the results to industrial practices is discussed.

As a result of higher levels of production and greater depths the underground mining industry in the UK is encountering hotter climates in some workplaces. It is widely known that high heat and humidity in an underground workplace will result in reduced performance and may also seriously impair the health and safety of the workforce. It is therefore of paramount importance that the underground environment can be effectively predicted in order that sound decisions can be made to reduce the effect of climate on working personnel. Over the years numerous computer programs have been developed to predict the climate in underground mines. One such important program, developed by McPherson, is CLlMSlM TM which is a prediction model of heat and mass transfer along a single roadway. This paper describes the development of a computer model, called DRIVE, to predict the climate in single entry drivages. This program incorporates the theory established by McPherson for the development of CLlMSlM TM. This involves the algorithm for unsteady state heat transfer. Throughout the development of DRIVE underground measurements have been taken to correlate the program. DRIVE will predict the changes in psychrometric and thermo- dynamic conditions along the drivage depending on a number of parameters. Firstly, the type of auxiliary ventilation system employed such as forcing, exhausting, overlap. Secondly, the addition of heat and moisture due to autocompression, machinery, strata, fissure water, oxidation, broken rock, fallen rock, refrigeration equipment, lighting, personnel, service water. Truck fleet dispatching plays a crucial role in reducing operational costs and fulfilling operational targets in open-pit mining operations and is subject to large uncertainty arising from the operating cycles of trucks and loading equipment. This paper proposes a reinforcement learning-based truck dispatching system. Reinforcement learning is a machine learning area that deals with learning an optimal sequential decision-making strategy in an uncertain environment. An open-pit load-and-haul simulation is developed that also captures the truck movements and interactions in the shared road network, and a Neural Network is successfully trained to suggest truck dispatching decisions in a real-time manner.

The Mississippian Salem Limestone, from which dimension stone is quarried in Indiana, is principally a calcarenitic rock formed of fossil bryozoans, echinoderms, and specimens of Endothyra. Numerical associations of the fossils, binding materials, oölitically coated fossils, and voids were determined by counting points on the surfaces of 278 thin sections of the limestone. Median sizes, coefficients of sorting, and skewness numbers were computed from measurements made of constituents in these thin sections. Many other samples and numerous exposures of the Salem and contiguous parts of adjacent formations also were studied. The organisms that furnished the skeletal material for formation of the Salem Limestone were chiefly gregarious and communal. Salem rocks are formed of nearly whole skeletons, of dismembered or slightly damaged skeletons, and of skeletons thoroughly ground up, because currents in the Salem sea varied in their ability to move and damage these materials. Locally the sediments are of uniform grain size because of sorting by currents and because related organisms grew to similar sizes. Rocks of the formation contain different proportions of the fauna both because the animals lived in these proportions and because their skeletons were mixed together by currents. The proportional relationships between members of the fauna were constant locally and for short periods of time. Study and mapping of the faunal associations, numbers of oölitically coated fossils, bedding structures, and size parameters enables geologists to suggest sedimentologic histories and sequences in areas of various sizes. Interpretations based upon such areal studies are necessary for evaluation of the dimension-stone potential within the Salem Limestone.

Oil from shale has been produced in foreign countries for more than a hundred years; however, except for short-lived, small operations, no commercial quantity of oil shale has yet been produced in the United States. Efforts to develop a viable oil shale process have been underway domestically for many years. At the present time, with the need for energy so urgently upon us, almost a dozen development ventures are underway or planned in Colorado and Utah. Of these several ventures, only Colony Development Operation has completed the development, testing and design of a ready-to-go 50,000 barrel per day com¬mercial project. Colony is a joint venture of the Atlantic Richfield Company, Ashland Oil Company, Shell Oil Company and The Oil Shale Corporation, more commonly known as TOSCO. TOSCO is the exclusive licensor of the TOSCO II retorting process and other oil shale technology, which includes mining, crushing and spent shale disposal techniques. This paper will deal, however, with only the materials handling aspects of the commercial oil shale operation. Oil shale handling for this infant industry is unique in that an understanding of the physical characteristics of the ore and the demands on material handling to the plant must he understood. Colony Development has completed ten years in the research and development of techniques and processes for mining, crushing and retorting raw oil shale and the disposal of spent or processed shale. A great deal has been learned about oil shale, in many cases confirming our intuitive analyses and the work of others, but more specifically we have brought it all together to a point where equipment performance and the specifications have been established and a design for the first commercial plant is now mature.

With increased levels of automation, capitalization, and empowerment of citizens, the traditional axis of labour versus capital or national government versus capital, upon which the allocation of benefits from a mining project was traditionally based, has shifted primarily to a capital versus community axis. In light of this paradigm shift, it is critical for the sustainability of mining that economic indicators be considered at the pre-feasibility, feasibility, and permitting stages of a project. Such indicators should emphasize the ?ripple effect? of the economic impact of a capital-intensive mining investment on a region due to outsourcing, as well as the diversified spin-off opportunities and the technological advances that can be exploited by local communities.

In 1989, for the third consecutive year, both the production and consumption of coal in the United States reached record levels. Domestic coal consumption totaled 806.5 Mt (889 million st) in 1989, a 5.4 Mt (6 million st) increase from the year before (Table 1). US coal exporters also had a banner year. For the first time since 1982, exports ex¬ceeded 91 Mt (100 million st). US coal production in 1989 rose by a surprising 27.3 Mt (30 million st), reaching 889 Mt (980 million st) for the year. To a certain extent, the sizable difference between production and demand growth was due to smaller consumer stock withdrawals. Coal consumers withdrew only 12.7 Mt (14 million st) of coal from their stocks in 1989, com¬pared to 22.7 Mt (25 million st) in 1988. Despite strengthening coal consumption, exports, and production, coal prices to all domestic sectors declined slightly during the year. That essentially continued the trend of the past several years. On the labor front, the United Mine Workers of America struck the Pittston Coal Group in 1989. It was a bitter work stoppage that was not settled until February of 1990. This was the first major coal strike since 1985. The strike also precipitated a series of wildcat outages by UMWA members in June and July. At their peak, more than 40,000 UMWA members participated in the wildcat strikes. Except at Pittston, however, most miners were back to work by August. It is estimated that perhaps 4.5 to 9.1 Mt (5 to 10 million st) of coal production was lost due to the Pittston and associated wildcat strikes. However, some of this production may have been recouped by other coal companies not affected by the wildcat strikes, and by the affected companies after the strikes ended.

The market prices received by producers of internationally traded commodity metals have been, and continue to be remarkably volatile and unpredictable compared with most other traded goods and services. This volatility results in an erratic financial performance on the part of producing companies, disruptive and often inflationary cost changes for consumers, unreliable tax revenues and export earnings for host governments and severe social and economic pressures on local, sometimes remote, communities which are dependent on the activity in question. Generally speaking, price volatility appears to be associated with the inability of the metal producing side of the industry to regulate the volume of supply in a manner that is consistent with metal demand, which in turn reflects broad macroeconomic and industrial developments around the world. This statement does not purport to apply to all metals or to all instances of volatility of course. Price movements may occur as a result of pure speculation or even illegal manipulation of the commodity markets. Embargoes, boycotts and other politically induced supply changes may contribute. Threatened or actual strikes also cause artificial swings in sales volumes and prices. How- ever, most of these developments are of a short-term nature. Yet metals price cycles may last for several years, as demonstrated by the extended copper price trough from 1981 to 1986. This paper deals with price volatility which reflects long-term economic cycles and the adaptive processes that exist within the industry in response to such cycles. Special emphasis is placed on the role of forecasts and forecasters in these processes. It should be said at the outset that this reflects the personal experience of one forecaster working in private sector commercial consulting practices that are independent of producers, consumers and host governments. However, the experience does cover the entire period since 1973 and has involved working with a substantial majority of the major companies that supply high volume commodity metals. By way of background it should be stated that the post-1973 world economy has provided a challenging environment for forecasters. One cannot be precise about the forecasting record of either industry insiders or outside consultants, financial analysts and academic forecasters because comprehensive records have not been kept, or if they have the results are too embarrassing to be published. Institutions such as the World Bank have published forecasts of the prices of major commodities on a regular basis and these have, presumably, had some influence on financing decisions in the industry. This record along with our own experience and numerous discussions with metal producers, major consumers and host governments permits certain generalizations to be made. The most important of these is that during the early 1980s. from about 1980 through 1985/6, the forecasters system- atically and substantially over- estimated metal prices. While some fore- casters did correctly anticipate a recession in the early 1980s and some consequential decline in prices, the magnitude and duration of the decline was far greater than anyone foresaw. This systematic forecasting "failure" appears to have occurred independently of the forecasting methodology employed. Moreover, its extent cannot be explained by obvious factors such as incorrect macroeconomic assumptions. Application of an SEM-based methodology suggests a reason for past contradictory results on the relationship between quartz and coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP). Results indicate that coal seams with the same bulk analysis of quartz have different amounts of surface-available quartz. Our research shows that the amounts of pure and surface-available quartz in a respirable dust vary directly with the rank of a coal seam, except in the case where rock materials are mined. The estimated amount of surface- available quartz therefore provides a measure of the quartz-related fibrogenic potential of a respirable dust.

"NIOSH has observed that many control rooms and operator compartments in the US mining industry do not have filtration systems capable of maintaining low dust concentrations in these areas. In this study at a mineral processing plant, to reduce respirable dust concentrations in a control room which had no cleaning system for intake air, a filtration/pressurization system originally designed for enclosed cabs was modified and installed. Eighty-seven percent of submicron particles were reduced by the system at static conditions, meaning that greater than eighty-seven percent of respirable dust particles should be reduced. The particle size distribution for respirable dust particles are greater than for submicron particles, and filtration systems usually are more efficient in capturing the larger particles. A positive pressure near 0.02 inches of water gauge was produced which is an important component for an effective system and minimizes particles (e.g. dust) from entering into the room. The intake airflow was around 118 cfm, which is greater than the airflow suggested by ASHRAE for acceptable indoor air quality. INTRODUCTION Chronic overexposure to respirable silica dust (particle diameter < 10 microns) leads to a progressive lung disease known as silicosis. Workers who develop silicosis have an increased incidence of lung cancer and pulmonary disorders. In June 1997, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (1) found sufficient evidence to declare that inhaled crystalline silica in the form of quartz and cristobalite is carcinogenic. Mining is one of the leading industries for occupational exposure to silica dust (2-7). Control rooms located in dusty areas in some mines are of particular concern (8). Many mineral processing operations utilize operator’s compartments and/or control rooms to house workers who are performing particular job functions. Most industrial processing mills have rooms where a worker looks out over the facility and has direct control over the product flow throughout the entire building. In addition, primary crusher operators are often located in a compartment from which they are able to view the primary crushing function. Their job is to control when trucks dump into the primary jaw crusher and the rate of feed of the ore from the hopper into the crusher. Many of these control rooms and operator booths do not have filtration systems capable of cleaning air entering the control room or booth, which can result in elevated concentrations of dust in the room or booth. To reduce the dust concentrations in these rooms, it would make sense to clean the entering air with filtration/pressurization units similar to those proven to provide a clean environment in enclosed cabs."

Diesel engines are a major source of underground miners? exposure to nitrogen dioxide. In an effort to reduce the exposure of underground miners to regulated and unregulated diesel emissions, primarily particulate matter, mining companies in the U.S. are retrofitting existing and introducing new engines with various exhaust aftertreatment technologies. Different aftertreatment devices, or changing the operating temperature of a selected device, can have unexpected effects on the concentration of nitrogen dioxide emitted by a diesel-powered piece of equipment. This paper provides an overview of the effects different exhaust aftertreatment technologies available to the mining industry have on no2 emissions.

Cleaning of low-rank coals can have several meanings, depending upon the definitions of the terms "low rank" and "cleaning." In general, low-rank coals would be lignite or subbituminous according to the ASTM classification. For the purposes of this summary, cleaning is defined to be any process which materially reduces the proportion of inert material in the coal. For low-rank coals, this often means a reduction in moisture content since moisture is the major inert component in these coals. A brief discussion of conventional cleaning processes is included, as is an extensive reference list.

The Paso Diablo coal project is located in the Guasare Basin in the northwestern region of Venezuela near the border with Colombia. In 1987, Carbones del Guasare SA, a joint venture comprised of Carbozulia and A.A. Antilles Coal (an Arco and AgipCoal joint venture) was formed to develop the Paso Diablo coal reserves for world markets. Regional drilling has indicated a coal resource of more than 6 Gt (6.6 billion st). Further exploration has delineated the Paso Diablo deposit as an area particularly suited for cost-effective surface mining. The calculated economically minable reserves of this area (200 Mt or 220 million st) and the coal quality characteristics are based on extensive core drilling programs. Initial coal mining operations began in August of 1987 and the mine is presently producing at a rate of 1.5 Mt/a (1.65 million stpy). The coal is hauled about 85 km (53 miles) to a barge loading terminal at Santa Cruz de Mara using highway-type haul trucks. There is no straightforward and systematic method for adequately measuring blast damage in on-going mining operations. This paper considers various techniques available for the measurement of blast damage, making particular reference to recent underground hardrock mine studies. This paper concludes by indicating the importance of understanding and accounting for geology and emphasizes the need for a robust damage-audit procedure.

The health and safety of employees, efficiency of the operating system, and production are paramount goals in underground coal mining. The section foreman assumes responsibility for making his part of the total system function to meet these goals. However, section foremen often have not been prepared to assume the full range of their responsibilities upon becoming a supervisor. This paper addresses the full range of section foreman responsibilities and concomitant authority. Management principles that must be mastered by him are presented, and performance expectations as well as criteria for their evaluation are examined. The benefits realized from effective foreman training are discussed.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, has developed a computer image processing algorithm to determine the size distribution of moving taconite (iron ore) pellets. This algorithm interprets line-scan images to measure pellet diameters. Pellet edge detection with a peak light intensity constraint is the basis of this technique. Preliminary error analysis indicates a normally distributed experimental error with a standard deviation of 0.09 and 0.15 for pellet diameters of 0.4 and 0.9 cm, respectively. System accuracy was independent of moving pellet speed below 50 cm/sec. Computer image-based size distributions were found to be in close agreement with standard sieve analysis.

Coconut shells are the most widely used raw material for the production of activated carbon used in the gold production by cynanide leaching. There have been efforts to find alternatives to coconut shells. Shells and stones of certain fruits, have been tested. Although promising results to some extent were obtained, coconut shells remain the main source of activated carbon. Türkiye has become a country of interest in terms of gold deposits of epithermal origin. Four deposits have already been discovered and, mining and milling operations are expected to start in the near future. Explorations are underway in many other areas of high expectations. Türkiye is also rich in fruits which can be a valuable source of raw material for activated carbon production. In this study, hazelnut shells, peach and apricot stones, abundantly available locally, have been tested to determine whether they are suitable for the gold metalurgy. Parameters of carbonization and activation have been optimized. Gold loading capacity and adsorption kinetics have been studied.

A high effective method using a hammer mill, a column pneumatic separator and an electrostatic separator was studied for recycling copper from waste printed circuit board. The factors influencing the copper liberation degree and following separations were discussed. Two different physical separating methods were compared and discussed. Experiment results show that a well-controlled impact action can produce a satisfactory degree of copper liberation at a relatively coarse particle size. Around 90% copper recovery from printed circuit board for coarse particle size can be achieved by using a combination of electrostatic separation and pneumatic separation.
