"Mining has always played a key role in the improvement of the quality of life, but also, it has been a source of environmental and social conflict. Despite the great progress in social responsibility and sustainability experienced in recent decades, the public image of mining remains low and mining projects and operations must face growing difficulties and demands, which results in increasing capital and operating costs. In practice, the objective of a mining company is to create value for its shareholders and therefore, the best approach to Sustainability would be to foster those drivers aligning sustainability and shareholders value, this is, the “Business Case for Sustainability” (BCS). Only under this assumption, convergence of corporate strategy and sustainability may be assured. This paper discusses partial results of a Research Project being carried out at the Catholic University of Chile, aiming to develop a social and economic model for the effective integration of the values of sustainable development in the strategy of mining companies and their stakeholders. INTRODUCTION Mining is fundamental for the wellbeing of our everyday life. But as important as these benefits are for humanity, the mining Industry has had negative environmental and social impacts. For these reasons, a closer relationship between “Sustainable Development and Mining” is more necessary than ever. The Brundtland definition of Sustainable development does not have a clear relationship with mining, but it provides the context. Under a strict interpretation of the Bruntlandt definition, stating that “Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” [10], mining would not be sustainable because the minerals are non-renewable resources. However, this research focuses on how mining can contribute to the sustainable development in the territories where the projects take place. In other words, this research follows the publication titled “Berlin II Guidelines for Mining and Sustainable Development” [9], which stated that “A mining project that is developed, operated and closed in an environmentally and socially acceptable manner could contribute to sustainable development. Critical to this goal is ensuring that benefits of the project are employed to develop the region in a way that will survive long after the mine is closed”. The potential conflicts between mining stakeholders arises from the interpretation of the concept “developing, operating and closing a project in an environmentally and socially acceptable manner”, and the impact on the economic objectives of mining companies. Nevertheless, the ability of mining companies to control new demands and expectations of stakeholders has threatened the implementation and continuity of their projects and operations. To deal with these issues this research analyses the “Business Case for Sustainability” (BCS). It refers to the process leading to a business and social-economic environment whereby shareholders value may only be optimum under a business strategy which fully integrates the values of sustainability. In the model proposed, the Business Case will start when the benefits are higher than the costs. Benefits not only associated with efficient use of resources, also benefits associated with avoiding difficulties to continue with the mining projects such as strikes, heavy penalties, loss of investment, and so on."

DOUG HALBE: We're not quite to the end of our session, but we're close. We've had a lot of fun with some of these spill ideas. But these are serious problems, and I think we might be able to benefit by continuing to compile these. Several years ago, the metallurgists at the various operations of Gold Fields Mining Company had a newsletter that came out every two months for several years. This publication consisted of short articles by the staff at the various operations, plus a few others, on problems they'd had and how they solved them. One very useful article, "Things We'd Have Done Differently at Chimney Creek," was written shortly after start-up. John Marsden was the editor and John Mansanti contributed to it, as did Jim Arnold (our distinguished co-chair) and Mike Gleason. I would be interested, with the permission of the audience, in editing that article to make it a little bit less abrasive and putting it into the record here. I think it's a useful SME function to maintain a list of things we've done wrong in plant design, things we don't want to do again. If we have another open session in the future, would others be willing, even anonymously, to contribute, bring slides, and say "Hey, look at the goofs we made?" [laughter, followed by support from the audience] Okay, we'll plan on that. And we'll try to include the Chimney Creek list in the transcript of this session-perhaps edited a bit.

"Understanding the airflow patterns in and around the longwall panel can help to identify poorly ventilated areas that may be prone to methane accumulation. Ventilation network modeling provides quick simulation time, and flexibility in adjusting airway parameters and ventilation controls. Such modeling is effective for analyzing linear ventilation networks in underground mines, but cannot compute flows in caved areas of hard rock mines or longwall gobs. The use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) enables a more detailed investigation of the interaction between the airflows in these caved areas but requires much longer computational times, designing complex meshes and determination of a variety of modeling parameters. Airway friction factors and ventilation controls are simple to implement in a network model but can be difficult to model and adjust in CFD. This paper will focus on using mine ventilation network simulation to identify and analyze key parameters that are affecting airflow distribution in and around the longwall panels, prior to more detailed analysis with CFD modeling, using the example of a longwall coal mine. INTRODUCTION In longwall coal mine ventilation systems common in the U.S., the main purpose of bleeder ventilation is to dilute methane gas and prevent the formation of explosive gas mixtures in the caved, poorly ventilated gob areas and adjacent mine workings. In longwall operation, these critical areas include the development headings inby the longwall face, and the gob. Methane-air explosions in these areas may be ignited by spontaneous combustion, rock-on-rock friction and other sources. Although rare, ignitions due to rock-on-rock friction caused by roof falls caving into the longwall gob are possible and were suspected in the Willow Creek mine explosions in 1998 and 2000 (Elkins et al., 2001; McKinney et al., 2001). Rock-on-rock frictional ignitions are difficult to prevent, as they occur in inaccessible areas. Therefore, rendering the gob area inert is essential to prevent the formation of explosive mixtures. Research by Gilmore et al. (2015) and Brune et al. (2015) has shown that gob inertization can be a difficult or impossible when using bleeder systems, since the flow of gases through the gob depends on the gob permeability and the amount of fresh air leaking from the face and the immediate roof caving conditions cannot be controlled by the mine operator. Having the ability to predict the location where explosive gas zones (EGZs) form inside the gob will be helpful for designing the best ventilation setup to minimize explosion and fire risks."

This paper reviews the process control systems used in early commercial pelletizing plants, traces the development of these systems into present day practice, and briefly outlines advanced automation concepts being considered for future installations. It deals specifically with controls for the balling circuit, pelletizing machines, and related material handling and combustion equipment. The importance of instruments for visual observation and data logging is discussed, and the potential use of computer control is evaluated.

This study emphasizes the importance of understanding the factors that influence the throwing of flyrock in mining operations, a significant hazard to both workers and nearby structures. Moreover, it highlights how blasting engineers, when estimating flyrock occurrences and their travel distance, typically rely on input parameters such as powder factor (PF), hole length (HL), subdrill (SD), spacing (S), hole diameter (D), burden (B) and stemming length (ST), while overlooking crucial factors like velocity of detonation (VOD) and charge per bank cubic meter (CPBCM). Through analysis using support vector machine (SVM) modeling in MATLAB, the study underscores the impact of including or excluding VOD and CPBCM on flyrock throw distance.

Recent research by the investigators has evaluated the oxidation roasting of refractory gold concentrates in the presence of hydrated lime. (Taylor, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993). These results have indicated that it may be possible to roast concentrates in such a way as to contain nearly all of the sulfur and arsenic in the roaster calcine and that cyanidation may be possible. To further evaluate the behavior of this type of roasting system a laboratory cyclone reactor was built and operated using pyrite and hydrated lime as a .model system. Approximately 50 years ago, the principle of cyclone firing entered practical boiler construction. The appeal of the cyclone configuration was that it afforded the flash combustion process greater efficiency due to turbulence-induced increased mass transfer, heat exchange, and combustion rates.

The Robbins Mobile miner has been in development for more than ten years. Two machines have been trialed in mining environments. While day to day performance to date has fallen short of the levels anticipated, instantaneous performance has been impressive for given rock conditions and continues to encourage further development. The Pasminco mobile miner has been committed for a 1.8km main decline extension at Broken Hill. M.I.M. Holdings, parent company of Mount Isa Mines, owner of the first mobile miner, are considering a new machine for McArthur River. Robbins, Pasminco, and The Centre for Mining Technology and Construction have, joined forces to accelerate development of .mechanical rock cutting techniques in general, and of the Mobile Miner in particular.

"Qatar’s capital Doha is undergoing major infrastructure improvements including a multiphase stormwater management program. Although located in an arid climate, Doha experiences flooding during rainfall events. Dewatering operations and rising groundwater levels add to the management needs. To address those needs, construction of the Musaimeer collection tunnel along Doha’s southern rim is being followed by a marine outfall tunnel connecting a pump station to a dispersion field 10 km offshore. Qatar’s geology is characterized by sabkha deposits, a series of predominantly weak and karstic rock strata that creates challenging conditions for mechanized tunneling, as highlighted by the uncontrolled flooding of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) used on the Doha Metro tunnels. Risk associated with these challenges is magnified for the outfall tunnel by drive length, sub-sea elevation, and a single access point. This paper describes the outfall exploration strategy and design decisions made in light of experience gained during the collection tunnel construction. CONTEXT – STORMWATER MANAGEMENT PROGRAM Qatar has an arid climate with an average annual precipitation of less than 100 mm. Precipitation is mostly confined to the winter months when rare, but occasionally heavy rainfall events easily lead to flooding in Doha’s metropolitan area. Its coastal location and flat topography a few meters above the sea level mean that the depth to the groundwater table is generally shallow. The karstic aquifers in the regional dolomite and limestone series contain groundwater of high salinity, which is not suitable as a potable water source. For supplying Doha’s population of more than 900,000 (2014) with potable water, the Ras Abu Fontas seawater desalination plant is operated about 10 km south of the city. This potable water production capacity is crucial for Doha’s development and – in conjunction with overirrigation and leaking sewage tanks – is also the root cause for rising groundwater tables that have been observed over the past years."

Cathodic protection using impressed current was employed to reduce mill wall wear during ball milling. Wear rates were determined from weight-loss measurements made on four 1-in.-diam mild steel coupons that were installed flush with the interior surface of the mill wall. Grinding tests were conducted on quartz, pyrite and quartz-pyrite mixtures at pH levels of 4.6, 7.1 and 9.2. Cathodic protection was shown to reduce mill wear by 30% to 60%. An examination of the coupon surfaces using scanning electron microscopy showed that cathodic protection greatly reduced pitting corrosion. The presence of a sulfide mineral, such as pyrite, was found to increase the wear rate significantly, possibly due to galvanic interactions. It was also found that the wear rate is significantly higher than the sum of abrasive wear and the corrosive wear, due to a synergistic effect.

The essential foundation upon which to build an effective marketing program in industrial minerals is the ability to produce competitively mineral products meeting precise customer specifications and to ship them promptly and on schedule. Without this prerequisite, all the other factors in a second marketing program-creative sales management, energetic solicitation, advertising, technical service, new products, etc.are without meaning. The primary image to be created in the mind of customers is that of the reliable and prompt supplier of mineral products at competitive prices and of standard, uniform quality. With this favorable image implanted, it becomes possible to integrate the other essential factors into a strong marketing program; and without this image, little can be accomplished. After having .made provision for the basic product ion position outlined, there are then two fundamental considerations in the design of a successful marketing program for industrial minerals. The first of these is that the number of potential customers for the typical industrial mineral product is, relatively small, and indeed compared to the number of customers for consumer products, the number is actually minute. The second consideration is that the customers for industrial minerals are manufacturers and producers rather than consumers. These two factors lead to a necessity that the marketing program be specifically and uniquely tailored to fit the individual mineral product to be sold and to conform to an existing pattern of distribution.

LKAB owns and operates two of the largest underground mines in the world in Northern Sweden. In Malmberget, with a production capacity of about 30,000 t/day of iron ore, the current main 815 m haulage level is rapidly approaching the end of Its life and plans are being made for its replacement on the 1000 m level. Due to the separation of the orebodies, trucks have been chosen for transporting the ore from the orepasses to the crushers. The trucks currently in use have a capacity of 120 tons. To increase the efficiency of the loaded haul, the new main level will have a favorable slope from the drawpoint locations to the crushers. From the new level the crushed ore will be transported by conveyor to the 815 m level for hoisting to the surface. The paper discusses the planned mining and transportation system.

The major parameters affecting dust flow at a longwall face are dust generation rate, air velocity and quantity distribution at the face, and the characteristics of the dust such as particle size distribution, density etc. Previous studies have identified the longwall shearer as the major source of the airborne dust in the faces. In this study, the effects of dust generation rate and shearer speed on the levels of ambient dust concentration are investigated. A series of experiments were performed under controlled conditions in a full scale simulated longwall face at the Lake Lynn Laboratory mine of U.S. Bureau of Mines using characterized bituminous coal dust. A trickle-duster was moved up and down the longwall face to simulate the shearer. In each experiment, a known amount of dust was dispersed by the trickle-duster into the air and the average dust generation rate was calculated. At the same time, gravimetric respirable and total airborne dust samples were collected and air velocity measurements were made along the face. The experimental conditions, data, and results are presented and discussed in this paper. The airborne dust concentration and air velocity data indicate that the concentration increases and air velocity decreases with distance from headgate for the first half of the face. Towards the tailgate, the air velocity increases with increasing distance but the dust concentration levels off with some variations. The data show that a higher dust generation rate results in higher dust concentration levels. More importantly, the data show that the rate of increase of airborne dust concentration is higher than that of dust generation rate. For the same air velocity distribution and dust generation rate, lower speed of the dust source results in higher airborne dust levels at the face.

In 1991, LTV Steel Mining decided to close an open-pit taconite mine in northeastern Minnesota using a passive-treatment approach consisting of limiting infiltration into the stockpiles and wetland treatment to remove metals. More than 50 Aft (55 million st) of sulfide-containing waste had been stockpiled adjacent to the mine during its 30 years of operation. Drainage from the stockpiles contained elevated levels of copper, nickel, cobalt and zinc. Nickel is the major trace metal in the drainages. Before the closure, the annual median concentrations ranged from 1.5 to 50 mg/L. Copper, cobalt and zinc are also present but they are generally less than 5% of the nickel values. Median pH levels range from 5 to 7.5, but most of the stockpile drainages have pH levels greater than 6.5. Based on the chemical composition of each stockpile, a cover material was selected. The higher the potential that a stockpile had to produce acid drainage, the lower the permeability of the capping material required Covers ranged from overburden soil removed at the mine to a flexible plastic liner. Predictions of the reduction in infiltration ranged from 40% for the native soil to more than 90% for the plastic liner. Five constructed wetlands have been installed since 1992. They have removed 60% to 90% of the nickel in the drainages. Total capital costs for all the infiltration reduction and wetlands exceeded $6.5 million, but maintenance costs are less than 1 % of those for an active treatment plant. Because mine-drainage problems can continue for more than 100 years, the lower annual operating costs should pay for the construction of the wetland-treatment systems within seven years.

Introduction With the increasing need to mine lower grade ores, high energy-related costs in comminution are of major concern. Very fine grinding is needed to liberate the fine mineral particles in these ores. Not only is this expensive, but it leads to greater losses in slimes. Gravity concentration techniques become unacceptably inefficient for particle treatment below 25 to 50 µm, and even flotation fails in the ultra-fine range. Ore from the South Crofty mine near Redruth, Cornwall, was subjected to thermal pretreatment in the hope that differential thermal expansion of the minerals would lead to intergranular cracking, and thus enhanced liberation. South Crofty ore contains about 1% tin as cassiterite associated with a complex assemblage of quartz, chlorite, tourmaline, and hema¬tite in granite and slate. Recovery of cassiterite can be as low as 70%, as overgrinding occurs during stage reduction of the material to 1 mm (primary grinding) and 180 µm (regrinding). Cassiterite is present in grain sizes ranging from submicroscopic to + 10 mm, the bulk being predominantly in the range of 50 µm to 3 mm. Experimental Flat polished sections of the ore were photographed in reflected light using a Vickers M17 microscope. The sections were then heated in a Carbolite LMF4 muffle furnace. The heating rate and temperature were monitored by a thermocouple immersed in the bed of particles. Previous work by Sherring (1981) on the same material showed that a 55% reduction in grinding resistance occurred when the material was rapidly heated and cooled through the quartz inversion tem¬perature (573°C), where a volumetric expansion of 0.86% occurs. The samples were therefore heated to 650°C at 26°/min, and were then water-quenched to room temperature. The effect of heat treatment on the mineralogy and fracture network was assessed by examining the same area after treatment. Results Most of the sections examined showed that extensive transgranular cracking occurred as a result of heat treatment. Such cracking, although weakening the rock and hence reducing the work index, would in no way enhance the liberation of the cassiterite from the host minerals. Intergranular cracking, which would lead to enhanced liberation, was difficult to discern under reflected light, but there was evidence of such cracking in some of the sections examined. Figures 1 and 2 are examples of typical sections before and after heat treatment. Figures la and lb - show cassiterite in hematite, Fig. lb, in normal incident illumination, illustrating clearly that after heat treatment, transgranular fracture is evident in the cassiterite. If any intergranular cracking has occurred, it is not evident in this photograph. Figures 2a and 2b show cassiterite in quartz before and after treatment. Fracturing in both minerals after treatment can clearly be seen, and there is evidence of intergranular fracturing. However, protruding "arms" of cassiterite are severed by transgranular fracture. Subgrains of quartz have also been isolated by trans¬granular fracture. There is major transgranular cracking across the wider sections of cassiterite. Discussion The effect of rapidly heating South Crofty tin ore to 650°C, followed by water-quenching to room temperature, has been studied by observing the fracture networks in mineral grains. The choice of 650°C as the heating temperature was influenced by the work of Sherring (1981), who found considerable reduction in grinding resistance after thermal pretreatment of the same ore. Scheding et al. (1981), however, have shown, by means of a crude calculation, that heat treatment cannot be justified solely on the basis of reduced grinding costs. The cost of heat treatment far out-weighs that of grinding, resulting in the combined costs for heat treatment being over six times that for grinding unheated material. The most economically attractive aspect of heat treatment is the possibility of enhanced liberation of the valuable mineral due to increased intergranular rather than transgranular fracture. Grinding costs would be greatly reduced by improved liberation at coarser sizes, and the costs of ancillary processes, such as dewatering and tailings disposal, would be reduced. The most significant economic effect, however, would be in improved metallurgical efficiency. Improved liberation would increase concentrate grades, and recoveries would be higher, particularly in the case of ores where high slime losses are produced due to the excessively fine grinding required to produce adequate liberation. Manser (1983) has shown that only a 1% increase in tin recovery, at the same concentrate grade, would be sufficient to offset heat treatment costs on South Crofty ore. Heavy liquid analysis and shaking table separation have been used to evaluate the effect of thermal treatment on processing (Binns, 1984; Scheding, 1981; Sherring, 1981). However, treatment of unheated and heated samples of South Crofty ore, ground to the same product size, by such methods have shown little evidence of improved metallurgical efficiency after thermal pretreatment. The large amount of transgranular fracturing revealed by reflected light studies helps to explain this lack of improvement. Implementation of post-closure draindown estimates for tailings facilities are important predictive tools for reclamation planning and often influence jurisdictional bonding. Simplified estimates of draindown have been proposed in the past but these methods are not able to capture many of the site-specific nuances as well as operational and material parameters that influence robust draindown estimates. This paper discusses an iterative approach that relies on unsaturated flow models to predict draindown rates and associated pond inventory water balances that track inputs into underdrain pond systems, solution storage volumes, implementation of active evaporation, and necessary recirculation of solution back to the tailings facilities. Specific design criteria such as climate, facility geometry, material properties, and initial conditions, as well as active closure operational considerations that can influence draindown estimate will be discussed. Concepts presented will be valuable for operators, designers, and regulators to guide closure planning and predictive analytical analyses that support draindown estimates.

The standard test methods used to determine the pyrite content of coal and mineral wastes, and their propensity to release acidic drainage, are critically reviewed. In addition to analysis of total sulfur by combustion, test methods using selective oxidation of pyrite by HNO3 and H2O2 are available. The oxidation kinetics of pyrite vary appreciably from sample to sample, and it is difficult to ascertain whether complete dissolution has occurred in heterogeneous materials. The reliability, reproducibility and suitability of different standard test methods were studied, using well characterized ore and coal pyrite samples. The kinetics of pyrite dissolution were also investigated. The results are discussed in terms of the fundamental chemical and physical characteristics of each sample, and the implications for waste characterization are considered.

JAMES DONALD FORRESTER 32.1-EXAMINATIONS The field examination of a mineral deposit or mining enterprise requires a comprehensive effort to determine all natural and man-made factors bearing upon the problem to be resolved by the investigation. Therefore, the purpose to be served by an examination must be fully understood before the engineer assumes responsibility, and before actual field work starts. A clear understanding facilitates planning the approach to the project for maximum efficiency and thorough acquisition of information. It follows, of course, that the engineer has the necessary knowledge and experience to discharge satisfactorily the professional obligations attending the project. Some studies are in herently more complex than others, and the requirements of the problem are not always the same. Some examinations require the detailed investigation of large operating or nonoperating mines or, possibly, of mining districts; others involve more or less reconnaissance studies; and still others rela¬tively small undeveloped mineral occurrences. Likewise, the primary objective of some analyses may be the evaluation of a mineral deposit or a mining property, whereas in other projects the major objective may be guiding mining or drilling work in the discovery of new or hidden ore bodies and mineral-bearing structures. Thus, the possible range of any given examination may extend in varying degree through one, or more, of the following types of procedures: 32.1.1--GEOGRAPHIC ENVIRONMENT Studies of geographic environment should be made to ascertain the general physical situation in the area under consideration and to identify those correlative factors hearing on the, findings resulting from the field examination. This commonly will include determinations of: A. Location of the field area with respect to the state and county in which it occurs and, if feasible, a record of the township, range and section with reference to the principal meridian, and base line (or lines) that apply. For examinations in foreign countries, or in regions outside the continental United States, it is desirable that the field locality, in each instance, be identified with reference to the boundaries of some form of political entity essentially comparable in character to the divisions used in the United States. B. Distances from existing communities and related service centers, via: 1. Roads, both improved and unimproved. 2. Railroads. 3. Navigable waterways. 4. Airports. C. Topographic relief as it will influence the selection of 1. Pit site or positions of underground mine portals or shaft sites, including dump areas. 2. Mill site, including tailings disposal area.

The heavy media process is now being used extensively throughout the world for the gravity concentration of a great number of different minerals. The process is a commercial adaptation of the heavy liquid procedure which has been used in laboratories for many years to separate mineral of different specific gravities. In the heavy media process, a suspension of finely divided particles in water is used to increase the apparent specific weight of the fluid to the desired separating point. The original heavy media process used sand, galena, pyrite and occasionally other materials as the solid constituent of the separating suspensions. As the process developed, the need for a more universal media meeting the following requirements was recognized: 1. High specific gravity. 2. Resistance to abrasion. 3. Resistance to corrosion, 4. Readily reduced to a suitable size consist for suspension in water. 5. Available in quantity at economical price levels. 6. Easy to recover by a simple method.

Although most gold production from primary resources is achieved by cyanidation, many research activities have focused on alternative processes using noncyanide lixiviants. Such research has been prompted by environmental concerns and problems associated with the processing of refractory gold ores. Numerous research projects have been conducted to search for a noncyanide hydrometallurgical process for gold extraction. In this paper, a technical review of gold recovery from noncyanide solutions is presented, and new results are reported. Gold recovery techniques that are considered include activated carbon adsorption, cementation, solvent extraction, ion exchange, and reduction-precipitation.

Experimental results obtained on the recovery of below 0.5 x 10-3m coal fines by flotation employing geometrically similar columns of 0.056m, 0.080m, 0.100m and 0.220m diameter have been presented. The hydrodynamics of such a unit as well as its performance have been related to operating parameters to establish optimum conditions. The results have further been analysed critically in the light of the known relationship on the behaviour of similar systems to assign reasons for the critical factors established in a bid to reduce the empiricism required to be followed in the scale up of such a unit.
