Rockbursts and rockfalls cause very large safety and productivity losses in underground mines. One of the major unsolved problems of safe, economical rock support in underground mining has been that of maintaining anchorage during dynamic rock loading conditions or seismic related occurrences. It is recognized that the large displacements and high strain rates in excavation walls and underground structures cannot be countered by increasing the strength of stiff rock-reinforcing systems but must be accommodated by introducing yieldability into the support elements. This paper introduces a low cost yieldable support system which provides viable solutions to dynamic support loading. Such system should not only provide a feasible and more effective rock mass stabilization strategy but improve mine safety and reduce losses.

This paper deals with the causes and mechanisms of massive pillar failure in a room-and-pillar mine that employed nine-entry panel system using supersection technique under a cover ranging from 91 to 168 m (300 to 550 ft). Chain pillar squeeze and large roof-to-floor convergence were first observed at the belt transfer point on the very inby side of the main entries. It propagated outby quickly and within 24 hours it had covered an area approximately 1,250 m long by 762 m wide (4,100 x 2,500 ft). The failure was caught and stopped by a solid barrier pillar. Using computer modeling, the study indicated that the massive failure was initiated due to a combination of undersized chain pillars in some panels and weak immediate floor. Also, the study shows that the massive pillar failure expanded to a large area because of no barrier pillars between some panels and between mains and panels. Based on the computer modeling, alternative mine plans have been proposed to avoid such problems.

Today mine shaft and slope contracts include a greater amount of ancillary work such as level and pump stations, loading pockets, rotary and side dumps and connecting raises. This ancillary work requires the application of a number of construction methods often for short periods and often at short notice if the contractor is to maintain a profitable operation. In the next decade, the number of shafts that will be sunk by a boring method will outnumber those sunk by traditional methods. This will be particularly true of the deeper shafts where water problems are minimal. The increase of bored shaft work will not decrease the work completed by the shaft sinking contractor but it will change it. A greater emphasis will be placed on the speed of construction of station and other ancillary work. To meet this challenge the contractor requires full information on the ancillary work as well as the shaft work at an early date, preferably pre-bid. The two examples discussed in this paper illustrate the importance of early information. The two main factors of shaft ancillary work construction are sequence and ground support. This paper describes two examples completed recently by The Cementation Company of America Incorporated in Arizona. The first described is a Rotary Dump-Ore Pocket-Ore Pass complex and the second described is the excavation of the Main Station Level in a 2 Station-Loading Pocket-Ore Pass complex. Experimental results obtained from large scale (7 tons), long-term (500 days) leaching of low tenor copper sulfide ores were interpreted by a geometric model involving the movement of a reaction zone through the ore fragments. The postulated leaching mechanism involved mixed kinetics and included diffusion of the reacting species through the host rock and a chemical reaction at the surface of the mineral particles. Ore properties which were considered were ore particle size and shape, grade of ore, and mineral content. Excellent agreement between the mixed kinetic model and the laboratory leaching results was obtained when minus ½ inch ore particles were not included in the leach. Also, a satisfactory prediction of copper recovery from plus ½ inch ore with a different particle size distribution was made; however, it was necessary to modify the shape factor in the model. Predictions of copper recovery from an ore sample which included the minus ½ -inch fine fraction and leaching for 460 days was 56.5 percent, and the recovery from leaching was 47.0 percent. The presence of fines caused channeling and uneven solution distribution and inhibited the leaching rate.

The Copper Creek area, part of the Bunker Hill District, Pinal County, Arizona, lies within the southwest porphyry copper province of North America at the intersection of a northwest trend and an east-northeast trend of Laramide porphyry copper deposits. The Copper Creek area has been mined and explored for copper and molybdenum since the early 1900?s. The majority of this work focused on the more than 400 surface exposed breccia bodies. In the 1960 to 1970?s deeper drilling discovered a deep porphyry copper-like setting. Redhawk Copper currently has NI 43-101 compliant resources of about 0.652 billion pounds of measured and indicated and 2.745 billion pounds of inferred copper equivalent in breccia hosted and porphyry style deposits. Two porphyry copper orebodies, the North and Central MM orebodies, have been found through regional and structural geologic works, about 5 Km south of Chuquicamata, under a gravel bed of approximately 100 m and in the west side of the West Fissure. The mineralization is emplaced in a coarse granodioritic porphyry, predominantly with sericitic alteration. In the North MM ore-body, with 200 million metric tons of 1.0% Cu, the mineralization is mainly chalcopyrite, bornite, digenite and molibdenite. In the central MM orebody, with 700 million metric tons of 1.3% Cu, there are large veins of enargite, chalcocite and bornite, the last one increasing in depth, separated by chalcopyrite and pyrite zones; in these veins there are interesting gold and silver values. Both orebodies have an upper enrichment of chalcocite and covellite, with pyrite envelope. According with these characteristics, the MM orebodies could he the upper part, with sericitic alteration, of the Chuquicamata porphyry copper system, displaced by the West Fissure system movements, but we couldn't eliminate the possibility that MM can be a new orebody, different of Chuquicamata.

In 1873 Barton tines Corporation mining Garnets for Abrasives. From providing bulk Garnet Concentrate the technology has advanced to the sizing and classification of micron sized particles utilizing a Barton process. Processing of Garnet involves extensive quality control at all steps, first to insure product purity and secondly to insure the correct size range. Barton Mines produces about 30 different sizes of Garnet products to lead the world in the manufacture of technical abrasive Garnet. This paper will examine the present technology of Garnet Abrasive Manufacture and the specification to which the sizes are produced as well as some of the markets served.

The dewatering of flocculated clay suspensions by compression in a centrifugal field has been investigated. The results are evaluated with regard to both direct applicability to centrifugal dewatering, in solid-bowl centrifuges for example, and indirect applications to gravity sedimentation systems. It is well known that sediment consolidation under gravity depends on structural characteristics such as permeability and on the "self-weight" of overlying sediment layers. An important objective of the study has been to evaluate the self-weight effect using centrifugal forces to simulate consolidation in deep sediments. In this way, small-scale laboratory tests can be used to predict the rates and limits of sediment compression in industrial systems such as thickeners and settling ponds. Experiments have been conducted in which the sediment mass and initial structure were maintained constant while the effective sediment weight was varied by centrifuging at different speeds. The effects of initial structure have also been studied using controlled variations in flocculation conditions.

In this work, the slurry flow in the ball mill is solved with Navier-Stokes' equations and the marker and cell technique (MAC), which tracks the fluid-free surface. Considering different planes in the radial and axial directions, this numerical approach leads to the direct calculation of the slurry velocity profile, mill holdup, and volumetric flow in the ball charge and pool. The MAC technique takes as input, the results of a direct three-dimensional simulation of the motion of grinding media, and in turn, provides a detailed knowledge of the hydrodynamics of slurry flow through the porous structure of ball load. This technique is a new approach to the mass transport problem that overcomes the limitations of indirect studies such as residence time analysis and holdup measurements.

Technical service is assuming an increasingly important role in the sale of asbestos fibre,, Manufacturers are examining raw materials more closely than ever before in order to, obtain the most efficient usage in their processes. Asbestos is one of the more difficult materials to evaluate and consequently has been are of the last to be subjected to evaluation. The main problem encountered in the evaluation of asbestos fibre is that minor differences in grade and texture are not shown up by chemical analysis, and are identified only by specialized physical analyses or actual production use. However, such minor differences become more critical as manufacturing processes are made more efficient, and many purchasing agents and plant chemists are applying a closer scrutiny to their supply of raw asbestos fibre. Many processes have been formulated around grades and qualities of asbestos fibre, which were standard some time ago, but which may now be subject to modification and improvement.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has extensive experience estimating the cost of mining and mineral processing operations as an ongoing part of its information and analysis studies. With the increased interest in remediation of mine wastes, the USBM is developing a methodology to expand its cost estimating expertise to include costs of various remediation techniques applicable to mineral processing and mining wastes. By integrating waste remediation costs with existing USBM cost estimating systems for mine and mill operations, a comprehensive system for cost engineering studies will be developed.

A computer model, which quantitatively utilizes the relationship between the interactive and dynamic processes of methane drainage, mining, and ventilation, is presented. The model includes simulation of the coalbed methane reservoir for prediction of gas-emission rates under the influence of degasification wells and longwall mining, ventilation network-generation, and ventilation simulation. As mining progresses step-wise through the coalbed-methane reservoir, the ventilation network is created and subsequently simulated, iteratively determining fan requirements to safely reduce methane concentrations. The model can be used to quantitatively study the effectiveness of methane degasification on the ventilation system in a longwall panel.

"The tunnel sector is excavated into a rock mass heavily affected by tectonics, defined as a regional fault. The rock around the tunnel support undertakes the non – elastic deformation and gradually detaches from the rest of the non affected rock mass, moving inside of the excavated area and tending to fill up the whole space. The initial solution of using stiff support consisting in double steel ribs I12 with circular shape in the upper part and straight vertical pillars in the lower part has proved to be inadequate. Based on the calculations of the subsidence phenomena and a mathematical model, the proposed alternative support was provided by special circular steel ribs – SG-23 –that allows a limited rib deformation (by relative slip between the arch segments) in order to mobilize the contact between the rock contour and the inner face of the rib - not only for the deformed rib but also for the neighboring ribs. 1. The dam is equipped with three radial gates with flap gates with a span of 12 m each and the height of (6 + 3) m. The western coast of South Africa hosts a significant diamond resource within gravels associated with paleo-shorelines, channels and transgressive lag deposits. Diamonds were transported from the Kaapvaal Craton to the coast largely during the late Cretaceous via the paleo-Orange river systems. On shore and near shore environments are underlain by Proterozoic metamorphic and granitic rocks which provide gully and pot hole-type traps associated with paleo-channels, basins, bays and beaches. Inner and mid-shelf environments are covered by diamondiferous, poorly lithified upper Cretaceous and Tertiary sediments. The upper Cretaceous gravels were reworked along the sediment-starved coast during much of the Tertiary. Reworking was mainly achieved during marine flooding events which produced lag gravels along the paleo-shorelines. This process reworked the diamonds from low-grade Cretaceous gravels and concentrated them in higher-grade Tertiary gravels.

Classical apparatus for granulometric separation generally have limited applications which are found either in the level of the size of separation or in that of the accuracy and the efficiency of the separation or in that of the rate of feed. In industrial practice, the classification of the products of coarse dimensions generally poses no problems. On the contrary, the separation of fine particles presents some difficulties, however the apparatus is used (mechanical classifiers, curved screens and sieves, hydrocyclones, etc...). These difficulties are due to hprfections of separation, rather high cost prices, and sometimes large amounts of recycled materials.

Solid-bowl (decanter) centrifuges are used extensively to dewater slurries in a wide range of industries. However, the application of decanters as classification devices is not as common. In this study, the performance of a continuous, pilot-scale, solid-bowl centrifuge was evaluated when classifying an ultrafine coal slurry containing nearly 60% material less than 10 µm. The test conditions included centrifuge howl and scroll speeds, volumetric feed rate, solids concentration and pond depth. Centrifuge performance was evaluated using size selectivity curves and the corresponding performance parameters, along with product yields and solids concentrations.

Longwall mining is popular in underground coal production in the United States due to higher production rates and safety concerns. Because of the extreme complexity, it is necessary to plan an adequate design to achieve a safe and efficient working place. The proper sizes of yield and abutment pillars and panels can be determined by simulation using numerical modeling techniques. By means of three-dimensional modeling, stresses to be imposed on the pillars, panels, gob, and powered supports can be analyzed. In this study, an initial three-dimensional finite element model was developed and then modified into four different models. Using these models, the numerical outputs of distributed stresses on three different sizes of yield pillars, three different sizes of panels, and two different sizes of abutment pillars were compared and analyzed to determine the most adequate pillar and panel sizes. Progressive failure theory based on the Hoek and Brown failure criterion was used to determine redistribution of stresses in the yielded and failed areas in the longwall mine.

For most geologists and miners the term asbestos refers to a group of highly fibrous silicate minerals that readily separate into long, thin, strong fibers of sufficient flexibility to be woven; these fibers are heat resistant and chemically inert, and possess a high electric insulation and therefore are suitable for uses where incombustible, nonconductive or chemically resistant material is required. The US Mining Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) specifically refers to the naturally occurring minerals chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, termolite asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, and actinolite asbestos as asbestos if the individual crystal fragments have the following dimensions: length-greater than 5 µm; maximum diameter-less than 5 µm; and a length to diameter ratio of 3 or greater. Since asbestos has been identified as one of the ten most carcinogenic substances (a cancer-causing agent), it has become, for many government regulatory agencies, a major issue concerning banning emissions to the environment. Very few recent issues have caused as much concern for the crushed stone industry as asbestos. Complicating the problem is the fact that several federal and state bureaus have greatly compounded the confusion because each has become involved in the asbestos dilemma. Simple solutions to a very complex problem have been proposed by these various governmental groups. In addition to governmental bungling is the fact that public interest groups have been able to use federal and state laws that have been enacted with a strong environmental bias to foment even greater complexities. Such is now the state of the asbestos problem. No con- firmed health risk has been associated with low-level exposure, namely crushed stone in an unbound form; a methodology for sampling and analyzing for asbestos has not been developed; a precise definition of what is asbestos does not exist, nor does a concensus among the various government groups as to what course of action to pursue. Pure asbestos as it is mined for commercial purposes does not exist in the properties mined by the crushed stone industry. Where the six asbestiform minerals do appear (to date we've been referring mainly to chrysotile in serpentinite formations in Maryland) the amount of the asbestiform mineral present is generally quite small. They generally appear in scattered, miniscule amounts. In the case of Rockville Crushed Stone in Montgomery county, Mary- land, the chrysotile is less than 1/2 of 1% of the rock deposit. No health risk has been identified with such minute quantities of asbestos minerals. MSHA standards for the occupational health and safety of quarry workers are being met; and there is every indication that normal background levels of asbestos, throughout the surrounding countryside, are as high or higher than levels measured on roads where the rock is used in pavement or base. The problem and the controversy lie with improper terminology on the part of so-called public interest environmental groups, aided and abetted by some governmental agencies who, to be charitable, we can best describe as uninformed. The news media frequently has fanned the issue, unintentionally we'd like to think, by quoting these misinformed authorities and not bothering to question the facts or adequately report balancing information handed to them. It is much better copy to talk about an asbestos cancer scare, than to deal with rather mundane measurements and descriptions that are hard to understand. At the heart of the issue is the improper use of the word asbestos. Instead of being confined to the geological description of the six asbestiform minerals-chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, termolite asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, and actinolite asbestos-the word asbestos is also wrongly used, but too-frequently to identify many other minerals that happen to have elon-

Studies have been carried out with the High Pressure Roller Mill, HPRM, to produce calcium carbonate minus 10 micron. This paper presents the optimization of the specific grinding force of the HPRM system for a maximum energy utilization when limestone is ground. In addition, experimental tests of producing carbonate minerals using the HPRM as a pre-crusher are described in this paper.

Since the discovery of 'potash in the Carlsbad area in 1926 and the start of mining operations in 1931, "first mining," operations have been carried on. This is a room and pillar system in which approximately 62% of the total ore is removed. Or the basis of ore reserves and rates of extraction, the life of the mine in the early; days was estimated to be well over 50 years, however, even with an increase by additional ore reserves, it became increasingly apparent that the life of the mine was being shortened considerably by increased production. Further cause for the shortening of mine life was due to the exceptionally weak back over the northeast quadrant of the main orebody which had .caved in on first mining up to a height of 8 feet. Thus, in 1953 the decision was' made to begin pillar pulling, also called, second mining or final mining, and in December of 1953 this program was started after much discussion.
