Under a contract awarded by the U.S. DOE-PETC, the Pennsylvania Electric Company and New York. State Electric and Gas Corporation are conducting a test program to evaluate and optimize the performance of a two-inch air-sparged. hydrocyclone (ASH) for cleaning fine coal. The test program is being conducted at the Homer City EPRI Coal Quality Development Center, utilizing Upper Freeport coal classified to minus 0.15 mm as the process feed material. A matrix of experiments has been conducted to establish the influence of significant design and operating variables (including overflow and underflow orifices, inlet slurry pressure, airflow rate, and reagent dosage) on the production of deep cleaned coal. Performance of the ASH is being compared to conventional froth flotation, utilizing advanced techniques and selected flotation reagents. This paper focuses on work completed to-date to optimize the performance of the air-sparged hydrocyclone for cleaning fine coal. INTRODUCTION The Pennsylvania Electric Company (Penelec) and New York State Electric and Gas Corporation (NYSEG) have been evaluating advanced fine coal cleaning processes for the production of compliance grade coal (1.2 pounds S02/million Btu). Laboratory bench-scale froth flotation results were compared with results of advanced flotation processes as performed by various organizations, utilizing the same coal feed. Among the processes evaluated, the air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) - developed by Dr. Jan Miller at the University of Utah - was considered to offer the best potential for retrofitting into an existing coal preparation facility because of the increased capacity per unit volume. The ASH has been shown to process over 100 times the throughput of conventional froth flotation cells. In May of 1988, Penelec/NYSEG was awarded a contract from the Department of Energy's Pittsburgh Energy and Technology Center (DOE-PETC) to optimize the performance of a five cm (two inch) ASH for producing compliance grade coal from raw classified minus 0.150 mm (1.00 mesh) Upper Freeport coal, and to compare its performance with conventional froth flotation utilizing advanced techniques and selected flotation reagents. The test work is being conducted at EPRI's Coal Quality Development Center (CQDC) in Homer City, Pennsylvania, utilizing a circuit processing 0.10 to 0.25 tons of coal per hour. Other members of the Penelec/NYSEG contract team include the University of Utah, Advanced Processing Technologies, Inc., Davy Dravo, Kaiser Engineers, Ebasco Services, and Management and Technical Systems. ASH DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION The ASH-2 System is a five cm ID (actually 4.76 cm) air-sparged hydrocyclone manufactured by Advanced Processing Technologies, Inc., under license from the University of Utah, for the purpose of research, evaluation and development. A schematic drawing of the air-sparged hydrocyclone is presented in Figure 1. Basically the air-sparged hydrocyclone consists of two concentric right-vertical tubes, a conventional cyclone header at the top, and a froth pedestal at the bottom. The inner tube is a porous tube through which air is sparged radially. The outer nonporous tube simply serves as an air jacket to provide for even distribution of air through the porous inner tube. The slurry is fed tangentially through the conventional cyclone header to develop a swirl flow in the radial direction. Air is sparged through the jacketed, inner porous tube wall and is sheared into small bubbles by the swirl flow. Hydrophobic particles in the slurry collide with these bubbles and, after attachment, are transported radially into a froth phase which forms on the cyclone axis. The froth phase is stabilized and constrained by the froth pedestal, thus moving towards the vortex finder of the cyclone header and discharged as an overflow product. Hydrophilic particles generally remain centrifuged in the slurry phase and are discharged as an underflow product through the annulus created by the froth pedestal.

1. INTRODUCTION The safe disposal of tailings is the most important environmental question facing the uranium mining industry today. This is because tailings present a major long term radiological hazard as they contain about 71% of the radioactivity originally in the ore. The magnitude of the problem can be appreciated by considering the quantity of tailings involved. For example, projections of milling programs in Australia indicate that there will be 100 million tonnes of tailings produced by the year 2000 (Levins 1980). The United States currently has in excess of 100 million tonnes and by the year 2000 will have between 900 and 1700 million tonnes (Landa 1980). Present options for tailings rehabilitation include leaving them above ground, returning them to the mine or placing them in specially excavated pits. In any event, the tailings will be covered with earth and revegetation attempted. This will remove the problems of airborne radioactive dust and water erosion of the tailings, at least in the short term, but diffusion of radon-222* from the tailings may still occur. The Atomic Energy Control Board of Canada (1981) has proposed a maximum allowable radon flux from rehabilitated tailings of 0.074-0.37 Bq m -2s-1(2-10 pCi M-2 s-1); the exact level is to be determined "after discussion with other regulatory agencies and the industry". The United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC 1980) has been more restrictive in recommending a maximum flux of 0.074 Bq m -2s-1 (2 pCi m-2s-1). As a guideline they also suggested a minimum depth of covering material of 3 m to achieve this surface flux for tailings typically found in the western milling regions of the United States. The design of rehabilitation schemes is aided by a knowledge of radon transport through tailings piles. In this paper we present the results of a theoretical analysis and experimental study of radon diffusion through selected Australian tailings and cover material. The minimum cover criteria of 3 m is reexamined in the light of these findings. [ ]

Three coal samples, selected out of eight with well characterized surface properties, were used in flocculation tests and synthetic mixture of coal and silica was used in the selective flocculation experiments. Coal wettability and flocculant type were found to have a strong effect on the flocculation results.

In order to meet federal air pollution guidelines, it is necessary to remove a considerable quantity of sulfur from many North American coals. This may be accomplished by oxidizing the sulfur to water soluble forms, followed by washing the coal. Selective oxidation of the various sulfur forms can be accomplished through the use of a variety of types of bacteria. In this paper, the various bacteria and their requirements are described, and processes using bacteria to remove coal sulfur are discussed.

New underground coal mines have become increasingly expensive to open. A simple drift mine producing a raw coal product can cost as much as $50 million while a new shaft mine producing a washed coal product can cost up to $200 million. As a result, few if any speculative new mines are constructed. Normally, a long term coal supply agreement is needed to justify new mine projects. Negotiating a supply agreement prior to production start is difficult. Pricing must be based on estimated rather than historic costs and coal quality must be estimated from core hole samples versus actual shipments. Further in todays competitive coal markets, there is little margin for error in either price or quality.

Finnish mining traditions date back 400 years. The country was then one of Europe's major iron producers. Most of the mines in current operation, however, were started during the last 20 to 30 years. The Finnish mining industry must make do with limited resources. Deposits are usually low grade and small in size. Open-pit methods are used where possible. But thin ore bodies and harsh winters can impose severe restrictions. Underground mining is often the only option. Despite these handicaps, Finnish metal miners produce copper, nickel, zinc, vanadium, iron ore, cobalt, and ferrochrome. Ironically, the success of Finnish mining is rooted in a crisis the industry faced several decades ago. Mining costs were rising. High grade mineral deposits were nearly exhausted. It was vital that Finland develop new mining machinery and methods that afforded higher productivity. Cooperation between the Finnish mining industry and its equipment manufacturers was good. Partly as a result, the Finnish mining industry has turned itself into one of the most modern and efficient in the world. The Finns did this while continuing to meet the stringent safety and environmental requirements in force in the Nordic countries. Today, the share of domestic raw materials used by the Finnish metallurgical industry is decreasing. So the country increasingly depends on imports of ores and concentrates. To better provide these imports, Finnish mining companies have expanded their foreign operations. And, while importing raw materials, the mining industry has been exporting its technological and equipment know-how and expertise. Mining methods Conventional mining methods and machinery are used in surface mines. Drilling is the exception. It is done with Tamrock hydraulic track drills and 100 to 150 mm-diam (4 to 6-in.-diam) drill holes. Pumpable slurry explosives are used in larger open pits. Underground, sublevel stoping with open stopes is the most common mining method. It accounts for about 80% of all underground stoping. The main benefits of this method are low production costs, high mechanization, and easy control. The best productivity figures exceed 10 t (11 st) per man-hour, including all mining personnel. The development of cable bolting has made it possible to use sublevel open stoping even in relatively weak rock. Cut-and-fill methods, such as concrete-pillar stoping, inclined-wall stoping, and traditional cut-and-fill have also been used, combined with sublevel caving and room-and-pillar methods, according to local demands. Various fill materials and stabilization components have been investigated and tested for cut-and-fill methods. Sublevel open stopes are often later filled, to stabilize the surface or to allow pillar recovery.

"In Crossrail’s Farringdon station, compensation grouting was successfully utilized to mitigate the surface settlements induced by the tunneling works. The main focus of this study was the platform tunnels, which were approximately 300m long each and were enlarged to platform size using sequential excavation method (SEM) from the existing TBM running tunnels, initially supported using sprayed concrete linings. The rear grouting injections were carried out at a typical distance of minimum 5m above the completed, fully strengthened shotcrete lining hence inducing some additional stresses. In-tunnel monitoring using surveying targets was performed systematically to ensure that no excessive distortion of the initial shotcrete lining occurred. 3D finite element analyses were utilized to back calculate the actual “effective” pressure that was imposed on the completed shotcrete rings against the additional measured in-tunnel displacements due to the compensation grouting episodes. Additionally an assessment of the theoretical, “maximum” allowable grouting pressures that would lead to overstressing of the lining is presented. INTRODUCTION As part of the back analysis performed for the SEM tunnels in Farringdon station, an investigation of the effect of compensation grouting on the two constructed platform tunnels was undertaken. The platform tunnels were 10.6m high by 11.4m wide and approximately 300m long each. They were enlarged to their final shape from the existing TBM tunnels using SCL methods. This study utilized 2D and 3D finite element (FE) analyses in order to back calculate the observed tunnel crown displacement, assessing the equivalent grouting pressures during the rear injection episodes of the concurrent grouting operations. The results provide a useful reference for the order of magnitude of the grouting pressure load cases that can be applied in the numerical simulation of similar cases. The Jerritt Canyon Joint Venture project is located about 80 km (50 miles) north of Elko, NV. It produces approximately 9.3 t/a (300,000 oz/year) of gold. The joint venture is 70% owned by Independence Mining and 30% by Meridian Gold. Independence Mining is the operator. The Jerritt Canyon Joint Venture started operations in 1980 by mining a series of open-pit mines. The discovery of deeper ores during early 1990s made it neccessary for the operation to mine a large portion of its annual production by underground mining methods. Underground production started in 1993 at the West Generator Mine. This was followed by the Murray Mine in late 1994. Two additional underground projects are being developed. Underground mining at Jerritt Canyon is scheduled to produce about 3.9 t (128,000 oz) in 1997.

With today's high energy costs per million BTU's, far greater emphasis is placed on increasing thermodynamic efficiency in the use of energy. America has long since discarded its previous golden age of "low cost energy" in the past ten years. Energy costs are now a very significant percentage of operating expense in industrial operations. Public utilities have felt the same influences of increasing costs in energy for the generation of electricity. Not only has the input energy expense increased seriously, but as pointed out by Blackmore in a paper, fuel costs were 53.4% of the total operating costs for American Electric Power Company.

The exploration geologist is frequently confronted with the problem of allocating his resources, i.e., exploration effort, among various areas. Although geologic, financial and logistic considerations influence the allocations, no objective criterion is usually given which determines the optimal allocation. Maximizing the gain in information, subject to the constraint of a limited exploration budget, is used as the objective criterion to allocate reconnaissance effort. The information function, I(x), quantifies the expected gain in information, where x is the scale of exploration. To calculate the information function the following data are necessary: 1. The probability that an area contains a target must be estimated. 2. For each scale of exploration, four probabilities must be estimated: the probability that an anomaly is produced by the target; the probability that an anomaly is not produced by the target; the probability that an anomaly is produced by a barren area (false signal); and the probability that an anomaly is not produced by a barren area. Alternatively, the barren area can be replaced by other targets. To illustrate the allocation model, the optimal number of line kilometers/line spacing per area is determined for an aeromagnetic survey for iron in Egypt.

T e mechanization of industry to reduce labor costs and to improve product quality is affecting he scale industry as it has affected many other industries. With increased emphasis on higher production rates many operators are experiencing difficulty in overcoming production problems where weight is a factor. Unfortunately, the scale industry has not shown the development over the last twenty-five years that other instrument industries have. For centuries the balance scale has been the standard and the workhorse of most weighing operations. In recent years considerable effort has been applied to designs to make balance scales more acceptable to industries employing automatic or semi-automatic processes. For the most part the designers have not attempted to replace the basic scale but toautomate functions of material handling and human judgement. Modern dump scales, for example, will accept material from a conveyor until a preset amount of material is on the scale, At this time the scale turns off the conveyor, dumps the load of material and repeats the operation with any desired timing. These improvements have helped industry. Even the scale observer has been replaced with devices which observe the scale reading and operate on weighed objects according to their weights. In spite of' the application of automation to the material handling, the balance scale has not been completely satisfactory. One reason for this is fairly evident when one considers the construction of the scales. Inherently, they are slow devices because of the inertia of the beams. The beam scale, primarily a static measuring device, is at the best limited to slow dynamic measurements.

Airborne geochemistry became a reality with the advent of a high-sensitivity airborne gamma ray spectrometer with large volume NaI (TI) crystal detectors. Small variations in the concentration of potassium (as K40), thorium (as T1208) and uranium (as B1214) along the flight lines can be determined by measuring the gamma radiation with a sensitive airborne spectrometer. Small volume crystal spectrometers are useful only for detection of major surface uranium (Bi214) variations, but the large crystal volume system is an airborne geochemical exploration method capable of locating hydrothermal mineral deposits. Radioactivity as a guide to ore has been discussed in the literature by Damon (1950), Gross (1952) and others. The theoretical basis is that potassium, thorium, and uranium are concentrated in late stage solutions during magmatic crystallization. Thorium and uranium are concentrated in late stage liquids because their large atomic radius and high ionic charge prevent them from entering into the crystal lattice of common rock-forming minerals (Rankama and Sahama, 1950). Potassium, which has a large ionic radius and small charge, also can be concentrated in the high water content late stage fluids (Heier and Adams, 1964). A large proportion of uranium and thorium in rocks occurs around grain boundaries of the essential rock-forming minerals (Hurley, 1950). Uranium and thorium substitute for zirconium in zircon, a comparatively early forming mineral. However, most of the thorium and uranium is concentrated in residuals where they can be fractionated and incorporated into allanite, monazite, xenotime, and other minerals.

The magnetite orebody at Pea Ridge strikes NE-SH and dips at about 800 to the SE. The ore is high grade magnetite with a strike length of over 600-m and a maximum width of over 180-m on some of the levels. The shape and the mineral content of the iron orebody have been fairly consistent so far. The iron ore and surrounding basement rocks are Precambrian in age. These rocks are usually very competent, about 400-m of sediments lie over the ore.

The formation of surface films on pyrite has been studied through electrochemical techniques of cyclic voltametry and AC impedance measurements. The characteristics of the surface films depend upon the conditions of oxidation and the source of pyrite. At potentials near 0.0 V, some pyrites have large values of polarization resistance showing a certain degree of passivity. Some pyrites show more passivation than the others, however. On oxidation, metastable phases of Fe(OH2) and Fe(OH3) form which transform to more stable 3 phases on aging. The growth of surface films near the corrosion potential of pyrite follows a linear kinetics which is attributed to a chemical (or an electrochemical) reaction as the rate determining step. The surface film is considered to be a hydroxide or an oxide rather than sulfur because the later is expected to be limited to a monolayer in alkaline solutions. This study has also demonstrated that AC impedance measurements can be used to study the growth characteristics of films at mineral/ solution interfaces.

The production of synthetic fuels from coal has been pioneered by South Africa. South Africa made a decision in 1975, due to the threat of an oil embargo, to proceed with the construction of Sasol Two, then followed by Sasol Three. South Africa has large coal but little indigenous petroleum reserves. The indirect coal liquefaction process used by Sasol since 1955 is the only commercially demonstrated method available for producing transport fuels from coal. The new plants consume 27 million tons per year of coal from a single mine that now produces transport fuels in sufficient quantities for energy independence.

INTRODUCTION Boom-type miners mechanize the cutting and loading of a solid face of rock having a compressive strength as high as 124 MPa (18,000 psi). These machines differ from continuous miners in that they can cut much harder rock for any given cutter-motor power. In addi¬tion, a boom miner is more flexible, selectively cutting any cross-sectional configuration from circular to square arched faces, 1.57-rad (90°) turns, and mixed faces. The basic operational concept of these machines, utilizing a rotary cutterhead mounted on a slewing boom, gained importance in Europe during the 1960s, where, due to their specialized use in roadway development in coal mines, they were called roadheaders. Along with continuous miners, boom miners share the ability to fully mechanize the cutting and loading of rock, while eliminating the need for explosives and the shattering and overbreaking of roof and rib rock that is normal with conventional mining methods. The machines are crawler-mounted and most have a gathering-arm load¬ing system that, moves the cut rock onto an internal chain conveyor, subsequently discharging the rock into a transport device such as a shuttle car or a bridge conveyor. Light- to medium-weight boom miners are cutting softer rocks and minerals successfully, including coal, shale, rock salt, potash, phosphate, weak sandstones (e.g., those associated with uranium ore), and other softer ores such as iron. Heavy third-generation ma¬chines have extended rock cutting to much harder ores such as borate, oil shale, and almost all rock associated with coal seams, except for the harder sandstones and limestones. The mention herein of specific manufacturers, brand names, or models is made by way of example only and does not constitute endorsement by the author or The Pennsylvania State University. All costs cited herein are in 1977 US dollars. TYPES OF BOOM MINERS All boom miners utilize drag bits fixed on a rotary cutterhead that is powered by an electric motor mounted in the slewing and elevating cutter boom. The cutter¬head is either a ripping or a milling type, and the machines have evolved through three generations (Boldt, 1977). As shown in Fig. 1, only one boom miner cur¬rently produced can use both ripping and milling cutter¬heads on one machine. Table 1 lists boom-miner models built in large num¬bers and/or successfully used or marketed in North America. Table I excludes machines of which only a few have been produced and none sold in North America, such as those manufactured by Demag, Eick¬hoff, Paurat, and Thyssen-Rheinstahl. The only Ameri¬can boom miners are the F-16 and Super ROC¬MINER"', manufactured by AEC, Inc., State College, PA. Machine Generations Three generations of boom miners can be distin¬guished according to their times of introduction, their rock-cutting abilities, and their weight classifications. Fig. 2 illustrates typical best-practice production rates possible from boom miners for selected cutter-motor power sizes (other power figures can be interpolated). This paper presents a history of a successful three year effort in locating a large, economic deposit of high purity limestone. The exploration program has been carried out by Ernest K. Lehmann & Associates, Inc., geological consultants, for Dravo Corporation, owner of the limestone property which is now under development. The permission of Mr. L. P. Struble, Jr, President of Dravo Lime Company, and Mr. M. W. Robinson, Director of Research and Development, to present this paper is gratefully acknowledged. The limestone property is on the Ohio River near Maysville in northern Kentucky, 60 miles east of Cincinnati (Fig. 1). The area lies at the eastern flank of the Cincinnati Arch, a regional structure where the Lower Paleozoic strata crop out below the adjacent younger sedimentary rocks of the Illinois and Apallachian basins. In general, the limestone formations of the Middle Ordovician High Bridge group offer the best potential for industrial limestone in Kentucky and adjacent parts of Ohio and Indiana. These formations are exposed along the axis of the Cincinnati Arch in central Kentucky. Toward the west, east and north, strata of the High Bridge group are progressively deeper, concealed beneath a succession of interbedded fossiliferous limestone and shale. The High Bridge group limestone formations are shallow-marine deposits largely of tidal flat, shallow lagoon and related environments. Principal lithologies include cryptocrystalline micritic limestone and crystalline dolomitic limestone to dolomite. Shale and bioclastic limestone are subordinate but the proportion of shale increases in the basal formations. Characteristic, is the occurrence of several thin beds of bentonite that serve as regional stratigraphic key horizons.

The Mineral Resources Institute (MRI) has developed a unique process for selective fatty-acid flotation of phosphate minerals from siliceous ores. The process takes advantage of preferential adsorption (over silica surfaces) and high reactivity of fatty-acid collectors toward apatite under slightly acidic conditions (pH 5 - 6.5). The process was successful in upgrading various Florida and North Carolina phosphate samples containing 7.7% to 15.3% P205 and 62.3% to 77.2% siliceous gangue (Insol). The resulting concentrates assayed 28.1 % to 33.1 % P205 and 4.1 % to 9.9% Insol, with high P205 recoveries of 81.8% to 92.2%. Depending on the degree of surface contamination of the silica particles in the flotation feed, one or more cleaning steps, with or without sodium silicate, would be required to achieve higher-grade phosphate concentrates.

Under drastically deteriorated situations, diesel equipment was introduced to some of local coal mines, aiming at higher productivity and better safety. To accommodate various diesel equipment in conventionally developed mines, mining system itself had to be modified; much larger trackless haulage ways were excavated. Possible health hazards of diesel not taken into account at the beginning become a serious concern and effective control measures are being searched for. The purpose of this paper is to study the diffusion characteristics of diesel exhaust in local coal mines. One of the parameters affecting dispersion of diesel contaminants is the coefficient of turbulent diffusion. Since CO2 is known to be closely correlated with other contaminants such as CO, NO, NQ, SO2 and RCD, it was chosen as a tracer gas in a series of dispersion experiments. A large diesel passage as well as a conventional track haulage way were the sites for the experiments. Rectangular dispersion pulses were generated for 30 ~60 seconds and CO2 concentrations were recorded at several locations 50~190 m downwind. The diffusion coefficients calculated graphically vary between 0.10~0.48 m2/s at both haulage ways. The results are analyzed to find any correlation with the air velocity and the distance from the disperser.
