This study was undertaken as a part of developing treatment alternatives for waste materials, primarily waste rock and roaster tailings, from sites contaminated with mercury (Hg) mining wastes. Leaching profiles of waste rock over a range of different pH and oxidation-reduction (Eh) conditions were performed. Since iron (Fe) is present in large quantities in mining wastes, the effect of Fe on leaching of Hg was also determined. Results show that the Hg concentration increased as the pH of the suspension increased until a pH value of 10.65. Thereafter, the Hg concentration decreased sharply. The Hg concentration, in presence of Fe decreased significantly (1/10thto 1/100th). Kinetics results show a relatively slow rate of leaching in presence of ferric ions. The results obtained from the present study are being used to predict the fate and stability of Hg present in the environment, and will therefore, be useful in dictating the nature and suitability of any remediation treatment.

4.1 INTRODUCTION There have been numerous methods developed for predicting the final subsidence and final displacement profiles (Voight and Pariseau, 1970; Brauner, 1973a; Kratzsch, 1983). But for discus- sion purposes, they can be classified into six categories: theoretical, profile function, influence function, graphical, physical, and numerical modeling. The theoretical method employs mainly continuum mechanics theories and attempts to explain the mechanisms that lead to sur- face subsidence. Many models using nearly all kinds of material behavior have been developed. These include elastic (Salmon, 1963; Berry, 1964), plastic (Pariseau, 1968), viscoelastic (Iman, 1965), and elastoplastic (Dahl, 1969). The Profile Function Method is essentially a method of curve-fitting against the measured subsidence profiles in a particular mine or region. There are more than 20 profile functions developed empirically for nearly all major coalfields in the world. These include, to name just a few representative ones: Hungary (Martos, 1958), Japan (Hiramatsu and Oka, 1968), Russia (Avershin, 1947), United Kingdom (Wardell, 1965), and USA (Peng and Chen, 1981; Karmis et al., 1984). The NCB's graphical method in the subsidence Engineers' Handbook (1975) also belongs to the profile function method. The influence function method was first proposed by Bals (1931/1932). It was further developed in various periods and stages by Knothe (1957), Liu and Liao (1965), Brauner (1973a) and Marr (1975). This method is now widely used in various parts of the world. The physical models include sand (Litwiniszyn, 1959; Pariseau and Dahl, 1968) and gelatin (King and Whetton, 1958; Khair et al., 1986). They are used mainly to study the parameters that control subsidence behavior. The most popular numerical method is the finite element technique. It can simulate nearly every conceivable material behavior, inhomogeneity, bedding planes, anisotropy, and various boundary conditions. This versatility is absolutely necessary considering the ever-changing geologic and mining conditions encountered. In the following sections, only those methods that have been applied to US coalfields will be discussed. Furthermore, the methods for prediction of several key parameters such as maximum subsidence, maximum possible subsidence, and maximum displacement are discussed first, because they are the key parameters to be used in the profile function, influence function, and graphical methods.

Computer controlled drilling is now proven technology. It was first introduced by the development of the Furuholmen system for a prototype three boom tunneling jumbo in Norway in 1978. Now, 13 rigs with this concept are in operation in Europe, 3. in mining in England and. 10 in tunneling elsewhere in Europe. The system is also adapted to roadheader guidance. Practical experience has shown that the computer control system makes it possible to drive tunnels with a more accurate contour thus reducing the total amount of rock excavated, and where a full concrete lining is required a reduction in concrete volume is achieved. The total tunneling economy is improved. In the future we expect to see a wider range of instrumentation on jumbos, from the simple direction instruments to computer guidance systems for monitoring only, as well as fully automatic drilling to a programmed drilling pattern. More compact and reliable electronics will be available. Systems with low power consumption will fit easily into flameproof applications. Cabling complexity will be reduced by connection of sensors to serial signal lines.

Microtunneling methods were utilized beneath pile-supported clarifier basins to replace settlement damaged sludge drain lines at the Jones Island Wastewater Treatment Plant in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. To minimize the risk of blockage and expensive recovery of a microtunnel boring machine against pipe piles or construction debris, a Soltau RVS 80 was utilized. This machine allowed the alignment to be initially bored with guided 114-mm diameter rods to ensure proper alignment and lack of obstructions. Casing pipe was then installed by jacking 1-m long, 305-mm diameterclay pipe along the rods and behind an auger head. This case history also discusses how 2.4-m diameter precast concrete pipe was used as a one-pass sinking caisson for workshafts and new cleanout manholes.

4.1 THE GENERAL COMPOSITION AND PROPERTIES OF CLAY-BASED GROUTS Clay-based grouts are visco-plastic systems; they are made by adding structure-forming reagents to a clay mineral mortar. Small amounts of cement and various chemical ad¬ditives constitute the reagents. If necessary, fillers also are added. The distinguishing feature of clay-based grouts is that throughout their entire stabilization period they do not form a crystallized structure as does cement grout. The structure of stabilized clay-based grouts does not deteriorate during minor rock movement or upon the initiation of blast¬ing during the construction of a shaft or a drift. Because they can possess good rheological properties during the ini¬tial structure-forming period relative to cement grouts, clay¬based grouts are not easily eroded from large fractures and karstic cavities by flowing ground water. In addition, their finely dispersed clay particles facilitate a greater fracture penetration capacity, especially in dual porosity rocks. Numerous investigations of the structural-mechanical and rheological properties of clay-based grouts by STG have demonstrated that the most effective grouts for pre¬venting the inflow of ground water into underground work¬ings are grouts that have a cement content of 8 to 10% (90 to 120 kg/m3) of the clay grout by mass. The grout should have a density of 1.18 to 1.30 T/m3. Various additional substances and chemicals can be added as additional fillers and structure-forming reagents. In pure ground water at temperatures above freezing, sodium silicate in the amount of 0.8 to 1 % by mass normally is the only structure-forming reagent that is necessary if the proper clay is selected and if it is available. The production process for making clay-based grout is divided into two stages: 1) the production of an initial clay mortar with specified properties and 2) the production of a clay-cement additive grout mixture using the initial grout along with the structure-forming reagents, including the ce¬ment. The properties of clay-based grouts depend on the phys¬ical-mechanical properties of the initial clay mineral, the properties of the cement and the properties of the chemical reagents that are added. 4.1.1 TECHNOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF CLAY-BASED GROUTS The dynamic shear stress' To, the viscosity 11, the static shear stress2 0, the maximum shear stress of the structured that the rheological and structural-mechanical prop¬erties of clay-based grouts must fall within the following limits: the dynamic shear stress To = 50 to 200 Pa; the viscosity -9 = 0.02 to 0.07 Pa sec; the static shear stress 0 = 150 to 600 Pa; the plasticity strength Pm of the structure one minute after preparation (according to P.A. Rebinder's method) equals 150 to 500 Pa. The plasticity strength 10 days after preparation is ? 0.15 MPa. The general relationship of the change in the structural strength of clay-based grouts relative to stabilization time is shown in Fig. 32. The figure shows that the structure-form¬ing process for clay-based grouts is characterized by three stages. These stages correspond to the time periods required for conducting the principal operations during the injection of the grout into a fractured aquifer as described below. Stage I, corresponding to the time period T1, reflects the small development of structural strength during early stabi¬lization. During this time, the structural strength must not preclude the capability to pump the grout. The time Tl must correspond to the length of pumping time from the moment water is shut off and mixing occurs until the pump stops forcing the grout through the manifold block and pipeline into the fractured rock as described subsequently herein. Stage II, corresponding to the time interval T2, reflects a sharp but controllable increase in the structural strength of the grout. The length of time period T2 is controlled by the addition of appropriate reagents. Stage III produces the final value of the structural strength. This final strength is used to design the dimensions of the isolation curtain. Consequently, the development of grouts is guided by two principal criteria: 1) the grout must develop the highest possible structural-mechanical properties and 2) it must be able to be pumped by a piston pump prior to final stabili¬zation. The gradual depletion of high-grade sulphide mineral deposits has turned the attention of the mineral industry to the recovery of metals from the oxides and silicates. Anionic (fatty acid) and cationic collectors have in some cases made flotation of non-sulphides possible, although in general, flotation of oxide ores is not as yet an economic process. Consequently, many attempts have been made to sulphidize the surface of the relevant oxide mineral and thus make it amenable to flotation. (1) (2) (3) In recent years, Bautista and Sollenberger(4) have investigated the conversion of a number of oxides to sulphides by reacting them with molten sulpur. This paper presents the results of investigations carried out at the School of Mineral and Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Minnesota to study the flotation characteristics of some sulphidized minerals. It is divided into two parts; Part I describes the sulphidization of a number of oxides and a silicate, and Part II presents the flotation behavior of the products of sulphidization.

"The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health completed a 15-month study at an underground limestone mine crusher booth that evaluated three research parameters: (1) the effectiveness of a filtration and pressurization system for improving the air quality inside the operator booth, (2) the relative effectiveness of ? > 99 and ? > 95 experimental prototype filters in the system, and (3) the performance of three different cab pressure monitoring devices. The protection factor was quantified monthly using particle counters in the respirable dust range of 0.3 to 1 µm particle size, and gravimetric dust samples were gathered at the beginning and end of the overall study. Under static (closed-door) conditions, the filtration unit offered a gravimetric calculated protection factor between 10 and 31, depending on the filter type and loading condition. The monthly particle counting analysis shows that the ? > 95 filter offers a protection factor nearly five times that of the ? > 99 filter, where n = 15 samples. The booth pressure monitors were tested and proved to be a valid indicator of system performance over time. IntroductionDesigned and installed correctly, enclosed cabs, operator booths and control rooms offer mine workers protection from noise and physical hazards, such as flying rock and debris, as well as a more comfortable environment in regards to temperature and humidity (Organiscak et al., 2016). While it is easy to quantify the operation of a cab’s air-conditioning unit by measuring the temperature, or observe whether the cab offers protection from flying debris, it is somewhat more difficult to quantify its performance in reducing respirable dust hazards.The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting applied research to improve the air quality inside the enclosed cabs of mobile equipment, resulting in the mathematical modeling of enclosed cab filtration systems (Organiscak and Cecala, 2008). The same principles that govern the performance of filtration systems on mobile equipment are applicable to stationary enclosures such as operator booths and control rooms (Noll, Cecala and Hummer, 2015). While stationary enclosures are similar to mobile cabs, the work area can be significantly larger. Workers in booths and control rooms also tend to stay within the enclosure for a greater percentage of the day as opposed to workers on mobile equipment who enter and exit frequently."

An extensive program of marked ball wear testing (MBWT), laboratory corrosion studies, and worn ball surface analyses has been used to gain insight about the role of corrosion in the overall wear process. In some environments, localized corrosion is observed; the actual wear mechanisms in such cases are pitting/spalling and abrasion. Factors affecting the occurrence of pitting include the abrasiveness of the ore, corrosivity of the slurry, corrosion resistance of the media, and galvanic coupling effects. Elimination of pitting substantially improves overall wear resistance. When pitting is not observed, the contributions of general corrosion are significantly less.

An efficient state-of-the-art dynamic model to simulate and predict the rate of water production in longwall coal mining operations was developed as a tool for mine planning purposes. The model can also provide an estimate of any potential resultant hydrogeological impacts of an operation via an array of element-specific single-valued parameters referred to as the field rating indices. The computational procedure was designed to fully exploit the benefits of hydrogeotechnology and use a combination of conceptual, physical, empirical, and numerical approaches to define, characterize, analyze, and evaluate flow controlling properties of fractured rock systems. The model presented here provides a dynamic prediction method for highly fractured flow; a practical tool in mine and water control planning; and a cost-effective means of assessing, based on the best available technology, the impacts of mining on the water resources within a mining environment to satisfy local and federal regulatory requirements. Unique features include consideration of laminar and non-darcian flow domains in double-porosity-pressure hydrogeological media.

In this paper the main subsidence- ground-structure interactions and an overview of the response of surface structures to subsidence ground movements are presented. The purpose of the paper is to augment our understanding for more effective application of available data as well as to highlight the essential site conditions in building response. The data presented general1 y applies to houses to structures up to 2-3 stories high and no more than several hundred feet in length. Superstructures of these buildings are supported by exterior (wood-frame or masonry) bearing walls with the interior floor loads carried by essentially one row of interior columns. This paper is not directed towards the response of tall buildings, steel-framed structures, or building types commonly associated with schools, churches, libraries, etc.

INTRODUCTION In the USA regulatory agencies have adopted standards which limit the allowable concentration of ore dust in underground uranium mines. The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists has recommended a threshold limit value for silica which has been incorporated by reference in federal regulations (30 CFR 57, 1980). The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) imposes a limit for unprocessed uranium ore dust for reducing the exposure to radioactive materials from inhalation (10 CFR 20, 1980). We have been unable to trace the origin of the NRC standard. Recently the ICRP has published recommendations concerning limits for intakes of radionuclides by workers (ICRP, 1979). We have used the ICRP methodology to compute the dose equivalent commitment to lung and bone from inhalation of insoluble ore dust particles. These values were used to derive air concentrations which would provide an acceptable risk for induction of cancer from occupational exposure. Results indicate that the new ICRP recommendations are more restrictive than the present NRC standard for radioactivity. The maximum allowable dust load in a uranium mine will depend on both the concentration of silica (% Si02) and the amount of radioactivity (% U308). We have combined these standards assuming complete independence of biological hazard to establish boundary conditions for which either silica or radioactivity is the dominating factor. Based on these results we present suggestions for analysis of ore dust to insure compliance with regulatory agencies. SILICA STANDARDS Silicosis, fibrotic lung disease produced by crystalline silica, was one of the earliest forms of occupational disease to be recognized. The pulmonary lesions caused by silica, silicotic nodules, consist of concentrically arranged bundles of collagen fibers. Fusion of these nodules results in progressive massive fibrosis causing alveolar changes which decrease ventillation and blood flow in the lungs. The current Threshold Limit Value (TLV) for mineral dusts is based on the concentration of free silica. The standard is expressed in three forms: (1) Particle count standard: TLV (mppcf) = 300/(% Si02 + 10) (mppcf = million particles per cubic foot) (2) Respirable dust mass standard: TLV (mg/m3 ) = 10/(% respirable Si02 + 2) (3) Total dust standard: TLV (mg/m3 ) = 30/(% Si02 + 3) The most commonly used form is the respirable mass standard. These curent values for silica are based primarily on epidemilogical studies of Vermont granite workers and other occupationally exposed workers. In the Vermont study no cases of silicosis were seen in individuals employed after dust control measures were initiated and whose subsequent exposure averaged less than 5 mppcf. The free silica concentration in the airborne dust to which these workers were exposed averaged 25%. A concentration of 10 mppcf of granite dust is considered equivalent to 0.1 mg/m3 quartz. The current respirable mass standard allows a maximum silica concentration of 0.1 mg/m3. NIOSH (1974) has recommended a reduction in the current TLV for respirable silica to 0.05 mg/m3 Si02. As with radiation standards, the TLV for mineral dusts is an upper limit for time weighted average exposure. It is recommended that dust concentrations be maintained as far below the TLV as current practices permit. RADIATION STANDARDS The present concentration limit for airborne natural uranium in ore dust prior to chemical separation is 75 µg of uranium per m3 of air ( 10 CFR 20, 1980) . This corresponds to 1.85 Bq/m3 (50 pCi/m3 ) of natural uranium, U-238, U-235 and U-234 and is equivalent to 3.7 Bq/m3 (100 pCi/m3 ) of gross alpha activity with radioactive equilibrium between the long-lived alpha progeny through Ra-226. The origin or basis for this standard is not known, but it presumably includes both chemical toxicity and risk from somatic radiation injury. Recently the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP, 1977) has published recommendations concerning the objectives and criteria for limiting radiation exposures. This was followed b y a revision of the limits for intake of radionuclides by workers (ICRP, 1979; ICRP, 1980). The previous compilation of limits for internal emitters was published by ICRP Committee II in 1959 (ICRP, 1959). Existing reports on the effects of mine subsidence on water wells and springs appear to be inconsistent. Some report quick and complete recoveries to pre-mining conditions while others indicate long-term or permanent effects. It is clear that topographic and geological factors as well as precise position with regard to the mine are important in determining probable effects of subsidence on aquifers. Ridgetop aquifers which are well above regional base-level are much more susceptible to disturbance by mining activities than those located topographically lower. Effects seen are attributed largely to increased permeability, both horizontal and vertical. of the aquifer rocks. The deeper aquifers usually show short term losses or water-table declines. but the effects on the ridge-top aquifers persist for longer periods or may be permanent. Subsidence enhances permeability. so that infiltrating water moves much faster to lower levels. causing pond and stream losses and declining levels in wells as well as declining flows of springs of the higher aquifers, while increasing levels and flows of the lower aquifers. Additional effects are shifts of spring locations caused by minor tilts due to differential subsidence and redirection of shallow flows by changes of horizontal fracture permeability. These effects are seen as mining of a panel progresses beneath the site. and are often repeated when adjacent panel mining fronts pass the site. Analysis of water well level and spring flow records indicates that the effects are greatest at the edges of longwall panels in the tensional regime. These effects are amplified for locations close to topographically steep terrain and in close proximity to fracture traces mapped from medium-to small-scale aerial images.

DuPont’s Florida Plant has been mining in northeast Florida and supplying titanium-bearing minerals, zircon and staurolite for over 50years.The site has successfully implemented and “sustained” a land reclamation/habitat enhancement program that goes beyond regulatory requirements and standard industry practices. However, the term sustainability has been used by so many organizations, many with divergent viewpoints, that it is important for a mine to develop its over-all concept and approach to sustainable operation. As a foundation, the outstanding reclamation efforts at DuPont’s mine will be presented followed by a broader look at the overall sustainability strategies and tactics used at the site.

External control of the electrochemical potential of a bed of mineral particles was investigated by the US Bureau of Mines as a method for controlling particle interaction with organic collectors and, thus, flotation response. A cylindrically shaped, 200- to 300-g bed of sulfide mineral particles was used as the working electrode in an electrochemical-flotation cell. In a pH 9.2 sodium tetraborate buffer, chalcocite floated with ethylxanthate at applied potentials [=] - 0.25 V (versus the standard hydrogen electrode) ; pyrite floated at potentials [=] 0.15 V. Differential separation of a chalcocite-pyrite mineral mixture was obtained by controlling the potential, but the flotation response of the mixture did not follow the behavior predicted from measurements on the individual mineral beds. Chalcocite dissolution products had a deleterious effect on chalcocite-pyrite separation by activating pyrite so that it floated below the potential (~ 0.13 V) at which xanthate is oxidized to dixanthogen. A pyrite bed activated with a copper(II) sulfate solution exhibited a flotation response with a potential dependence between that of chalcocite and pyrite. Pyrite dissolution products had no effect on chalcocite flotation.

INTRODUCTION TO COAL MINE PRACTICES To illustrate the trends and the proportions of the various methods used to mine coal underground, Fig. 1 is useful. However, of all the underground coal mining practices in the US, room-and-pillar mining still accounts for 96.5%. This percentage is divided as follows: conventional, machine cut-33.0%; conventional, hand cut -1.7% : and continuous mining-61 .8%. As was stated in Sec. 1, Chap. 7, the term "development" means different things to a coal miner and a metal miner. Though some of the ideas and concepts presented in the first two chapters of this section are valid for all types of mines, they apply particularly to mines using noncoal methods. In coal mines (and many other mines using coal mining systems) development refers to that phase of the mining cycle which advances several entries through the virgin seam, forming pillars by cross- cutting between the parallel entries. Because in the past, coal seams (as well as seams of potash, trona, oil shales, gilsonite, salt, and some uranium) have been much more uniform in their thickness, continuity, and quality, and because they often cover large areas, it has been possible to develop the room-and-pillar mine completely from a preplanned, systematic approach with a minimum of surface drilling information. As the better coal seams of the midwest and east are being depleted (or eliminated because of high sulfur), seams of poor quality and continuity will have to be mined. Also, seams that are not nearly so well known at greater depth will have to be taken as well as some of the steeply pitching and folded seams of the west. The American coal miner is only now feeling the need to do a much more complete job of prospecting the geology of the coal seams than he has ever done before. This is the only way that the risk of unknown rock conditions can be minimized. In many ways, surprises in the rock or coal seams are much more of a disaster to the coal miner developing a room-and- pillar mine than to his metal mining counterpart. Be- cause of the multiple entries, the complex set of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety regulations, and the totally dedicated design of coal mining equipment, coal mining systems do not have the flexibility to easily overcome changes in the seams mined or the rocks around them. Thus, if a wide parting of rock shows up unexpectedly in the middle of a coal seam entry being milled away by a continuous miner, it will either have to slowly "chew" through it, convert to a conventional mining system, or stop that particular entry. Likewise, if suddenly the coal disappears completely and in its place are the remains of an old creek bed, the "want" or "wash out" as it's called will usually have to be mined right along with the coal, by the same methods and with the same soft rock equipment, or the entry will have to be abandoned. For reasons such as these, coal seams today should be drilled from the surface just as thoroughly as the ore bodies in metal mines. Having once determined a more precise location of where the coal seams are located and which are suitable for mining, the engineer must still take a systematic approach to planning the mine as completely as possible. The initial series of entries must be planned to be driven either from the side hill portal or from the bottom of the shaft or slope. In either case, they should usually intersect the area close to the midpoint of the mass to be mined.

Recently water insoluble alcoholic solutions of alkyl hydroxamic acid collectors have been shown to be particularly effective in the flotation of coarse feed material sampled from phosphate operations in Florida, North Carolina and Utah (Miller et al., 2000). The experimental results indicate that high separation efficiencies can be achieved in single stage flotation with these new collectors. In some cases the concentrate grade reached 34% P2O5 with 93% recovery from single stage bench scale flotation experiments. Critical aspects of the composition and structure of these new collectors are discussed with respect to their effectiveness in phosphate flotation. The wetting characteristics at fluorapatite, francolite, dolomite and quartz surfaces are being investigated with the new collector. Finally, other surface chemistry considerations in the development of these new collectors for phosphate flotation are discussed.

The conventional role or exploration, development and grade control is examined in this paper within the context of the many and varied types of gold occurrences which are found at the Dome Mine. The account endeavours to trace the development of the total ore evaluation process, from diamond drilling through the exploration and drifting stage, to the stope development and planning phase of the operation, with an emphasis on sampling techniques and assaying procedure. The concept of ore reserve calculations is developed and the practice of grade control is described.
