The mining industry is presently one of the most heavily capitalized industries in the U.S. (U.S. - Statistical Abstracts, 1979). U.S. sales of new mining equipment (not including environmental, preparation, or long distance transportation equipment) are projected to reach approximately $5 billion/year in 1980 (Frost and Sullivan, 1979). Of these new equipment sales approximately 30 to 40 percent of this equipment will be used to replace old equipment. Therefore, an increase of efficiency in the use of equipment replacement capital could have substantially positive effects for the U.S. mining industry. This is very critical in these times of restricted capital availability, double digit inflation, burdensome governmental regulation, and rising foreign competition in the mining industry. This paper examines the numerous factors that constitute the typical mine equipment replacement problem. A computerized, mathematical model is formulated to utilize historic cost and production information to predict equipment cost versus age for the existing and potential replacement machines. Another part of this computerized model determines the best equipment replacement strategy that accomplishes estimated production goals at a minimum discounted cost. This computerized model is an easily used, consistent method of determining the optimum replacement age for any equipment unit or fleet of equipment at a mining operation.

The Bethlehem Mines Corp. is a captive mining subsidiary of Bethlehem Steel Corp. Its coal production is tied to the demands for and production of steel, a situation that has to balance between the following two extreme strategies: (1) either the mines are designed and operated for some optimum production level and the demand fluctuations within the steel corporation are met by supplementary corporate coal sales and purchases, or (2) the mines absorb all the demand fluctuations, regardless of the effects on mine costs. A rational definition of the best strategy between these extremes is, of course, needed but is very difficult to formulate in view of the complexity of the many factors that would have to be included in the analysis. Consequently, rather than setting profit targets for each given mining division and/or individual mine, the practice evolved to set production targets for producing specified tonnages of coking coal for shipments to the ovens located at the corporation's iron and steelmaking plants. This in turn leaves the mines with the dilemma of having to explain demand-related cost-per-ton fluctuations while essentially depriving them of the ability to control profit through tonnage optimization. In the early 1970's, the coal prices rose significantly, while other factors led to sagging productivity in underground coal mining. Thus, the role of Bethlehem's coal operations in the corporate profit picture gained in relative importance. This, in turn, sparked a closer attention to the coal mining cost structure and factors controlling productivity. At the same time, the drastic increase in the capital needed to open a new mine also increased the amount of planning required to minimize risks. All of this called for more well-defined, quantitative operating data. Bethlehem therefore launched, in the early 1970's, a number of innovative steps that, as the future may show, represented pioneering contributions to the growing sophistication of North American underground coal mine planning and management control practices. This case study describes the changes that led to the current implementation of a novel production reporting system at Bethlehem's coal mines. These changes took place in two distinctly different phases. The current system that resulted from the Phase II developments utilizes, of course, experience gained earlier and is expected to be amplified to incorporate more advanced concepts and technology as future experience dictates.

The future is uncertain. In these circum- stances how can we rationally decide whether to commit funds to an investment that may or may not turn out to be successful? To date no certain answer to this problem has been found, nor is one likely to be found in the future. At best we can attempt to assess the possible outcome in terms of probability, taking into account all sources of information that may be available at the time the decision must be made. This subject is addressed with some trepidation and much humility. Any attempt to fore- tell the future is by its very nature controversial. The purpose of ' this .chapter is to present a proposed rationale for decision making under uncertainty which relates the probabilistic risk of the investment to the capacity of the firm to absorb possible unfavorable consequences if they should occur. It is not the intention to propose a cut-and-dried methodology but rather to examine the conceptual philosophy on which a methodology may be based.

All technologies move through a cycle from infancy to maturity. Thickened tailings have moved into the young adulthood phase of its development. Many mining companies like the idea of reducing their water-taking and water disposal issues. This limits the risks associated with traditional surface water-covered tailings facilities and the reduced dilution possible through underground disposal of thickened or paste tailings. Just as home theater systems advertised as ?plug and play? are rarely quite that straightforward, implementing and improving a thickened-tailings system has its challenges. However, the technology has also developed in recent years so it is more accessible. Some success factors have emerged because of the new technologies. Is thickened tailings the right solution? The first step in success with thickened tailings should be whether it is, in fact, the right solution for a particular mine. And, if so, what type of thickening is best. The answer depends on several factors, including: ? Grain size: The grain size that is optimal for maximizing mill recovery is some-times not suitable for thickening. Other mineralogical factors, such as mica content, may also influence whether the tailings are suitable. ? Water issues: Available water does not always have the purity necessary for the process. Another issue to consider is that if water is in short supply, as is increasingly often the case, thickening may be a way to reduce the need to both take and dispose of water.

Lateritic gold has been the object of study only for a very few years, though nuggets have been mentioned in earlier works even as early as 1984 by Hartt in Brazil. In Mato Grosso State, lateritisation is intense, as is common in all tropical forest areas of the world. Exploration has revealed the presence of recoverable "nugget gold" of variable sizes (30 - 200 gms) but frequently of good size (0 - 40 gms), especially near Cuiaba and Alta Floresta regions. In both of them the host system is a lateritised breccia indicative of a fault or shear zone breccia, though in different lithological domains. The Cuiaba occurrences are phyllitic and show a profile as follows, from top to bottom: 1) Compact ferralite crust. 2) Oolitic to pisolitic compact crust (+ some gold). 3) Mottled concretionary laterite crust. 4) Lateritised "eluvial material" (gold nuggets). 5) Mottled patchy to banded laterite. 6) Banded lateritised phyllite with lenticular to banded goethite. 7) Altered red goethitic phyllite, with quartz veins (+ fine gold). 8) Unaltered grey phyllite with quartz veins (Protore). The Alta Floresta-Juruena River occurrences are volcano-sedimentary and show a profile as follows: 1) Deep brown siltitic, argillaceous and arenaceous material with organic matter (+ gold). 2) Modular and concretionary laterite, compact and indurated, with arsenophyrite in quartz fragments (gold nuggets). 3) Band with silty-clayey matrix and arenaceous in nature. 4) Bedrock meta-arcosian arenite. 5) Volcano-sedimentary with rhyodacites and andesitic basalts, with intercalations of arkosic and greywacke nature. Breccias and quartz veins, and granites associated in different portions (Protore).

Recovery performance may be measured in absolute terms or in relative ones that relate the actual mining outcome to what was expected. Consideration is possible in terms of the control exercised by the operator. The eventual mineral output is the only figure known with complete certainty. The paradox is that, while performance is judged against the sampling, the reverse also applies. The R/Efactor and its four component factors are the best overall measures of performance. The choice of equipment for sampling and mining is very important. The sampling process may introduce errors and the sample density may lead to poor mining block selection. The resulting recovery performance is most visible on a regression curve. Changes in the cutoff grade must also be taken into account to avoid unrealistic production targets. Estimation methods incorporating different mathematical assumptions and techniques may cause over-or underestimation of the grade and volume. If the selective ability of the mining equipment does not match the size of the reserve blocks, the performance will be compromised. The treatment plant efficiency, the throughput rate and the degree of bedrock clean-up also affect performance. The maximization of throughput does not yield the optimum results. Marine conditions, which are outside the operator's control, affect not only operational availability but also performance. Examples are provided from actual operations for various commodities, showing the relative magnitude of the different effects upon performance.

The historic Getchell property, near Golconda, NV, is being mined from the Getchell Main Under- ground workings, a footwall extension of the Getchell open-pit deposits along the Getchell fault. Drift-and-fill techniques are used to extract the ore through a ramp access. The adjacent Turquoise Ridge deposit is under development by two vertical shafts. These two mines will continue to provide feed to the Getchell's 2.9 ktld (3,200 stpd) mill/autoclave circuit. This will take Getchell Gold from its current production rate of 6.2 t/a (200,000 oz/year) to more than 12.4 t/a (400,000 oz/year) by 1999.

The solving of complex metallurgical flowsheet calculations by hand is, at best, a tedious job which often proves that engineers, too, make mistakes. The high cost and long lead time associated with manual flowsheet solutions have led several organizations involved in research, development and construction of extractive metallurgical processes to search for computerized systems which will solve flowsheet calculations. Although design flowsheet programs have been developed by the chemical industry, the ability to solve flowsheets involving particulate solids is usually overlooked. A new computer applications system has been developed at Fluor Mining and Metals which has been designed to accommodate the type of design flowsheets required by the minerals industry. By employing the sequential modular computation technique, a library of metallurgical pro- cessing routines may' be accumulated which are used by a universal executive system. This technique enables rapid solution of new process) .flow- sheets with only a minimum of additional programming effort. The implementation of the FLEXMET flowsheet solution system is the subject of this paper. Some of the major features of the system which are examined include interactive input data handling, automated flowsheet calculation order arrangement, flexible accomodation of unit operations models and advanced management of recycle and specification control calculations.

INTRODUCTION The paper presents a broad overview of the geotechnical site studies required for siting uranium tailings dams. These studies, which are interdisciplinary in nature, touch upon such related fields as: hydrogeology, hydrology, and seismicity. Tailings dams are commonly used to develop tailings ponds for the storage of the waste products generated by mine milling operations. In the past, most tailings ponds have been developed either above ground on dry land, or in existing lakes. In the United States a majority of the uranium mines are located in arid or semi-arid regions and past practice has been to store the wastes above ground on dry land (1,2). Currently, the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (N.R.C.) recommends below ground disposal of uranium waste products, although they indicate that they will consider above ground alternatives (3). In Canada many of the existing uranium mines are located in a wet environment and past practice has been to use small lakes and depressions as tailings ponds (1,4). However, current practice in Canada leans towards above ground, dry-land storage (5,6,7), and the Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB) guidelines (5) indicate this to be the preferable method. In B.C., where a moratorium on uranium mining has been declared by the Provincial Government, there are no existing uranium tailings ponds. However, both the formerly proposed Birch Island and Blizzard uranium developments would have used dry land storage. Most of the existing non-uranium mill wastes in B.C. are stored behind tailings dams on dry land. The waste products delivered to the tailings pond comprise, the ground-up rock that remains after most of the uranium values have been removed and the excess chemicals used in the milling process. These waste products, which are called "tailings", are normally mixed with water to produce a slurry and then pumped to the tailings pond. Since the uranium recovered constitutes only a small percentage of the ore (usually less than 1%) (8), large quantities of waste rock and associated transportation water are discharged into the tailings impoundment area. Consequently, relatively large tailings pond areas are required for the uranium tailings. In recent years, major advances have been made in the design, construction, and operation of non-uranium tailings storage facilities (9,10,11,12,13,14, 15). 6.1 INTRODUCTION A surface structure will suffer damage when the additional stresses induced by ground deformations associated with surface subsidence, plus the original stress introduced by construction de¬sign, exceed the strength of the structural elements. In this con¬text, there are two methods available for preventing and control¬ling surface structural damage: one is to strengthen the structure and the other is to design the mining operations such that ground deformations at the structure site can be reduced to an acceptable level. Mining operations include panel layout and mining tech¬niques. These methods are detailed in this chapter. It must be noted that most prevention/control methods men¬tioned in this chapter are used in the countries where the reference papers are cited. In the United States, the coal operators are not required to take those measures mentioned in this chapter. Some of the methods described in this chapter cannot be implemented with¬out changes in the current mining practice as permitted by laws. In addition cost of implementing those methods are not considered here. 6.2 PANEL LAYOUT As shown in Figs. 2.9, 2.10, and 2.11, permanent ground deformations in a subsidence basin mainly concentrate near the edges of the underground opening, and can be divided into four zones. A structure located in different zones will be subjected to different types and magnitudes of ground deformations. In laying out the panels, Table 5.1 and Figs. 2.9, 2.10, and 2.11 could be taken into consideration. Attempts could be made to avoid placing the structure on a location where the ground deformation to which that structure is sensitive is at its maximum. Therefore rational design of the panel is the simplest way to reduce structural defor¬mations. Panel design involves the determination of panel dimension, panel edge location, direction of face advance, and use of yield chain pillars. A. Panel Dimension Since longwalls in the US employ a multiple-entry system, where rows of chain pillars are left unmined, subsidence over those chain pillars is usually smaller. Therefore, whenever possi¬ble, the panel dimension could be designed such that a major structure or structures are over those unmined chain pillars, be¬tween adjacent panels, or some distance beyond both ends of the panels. At the center of the supercritical final subsidence basin, a structure will not be subjected to any final or permanent ground deformations. In order to create such a condition, the panel width must be such that the structure will be located beyond the major influence zone of the final subsidence basin, the minimum dimen¬sion of which must be: [ ] where L is the width or length of the final mined out gob, t is the width or length of the structure to be protected, h is mining depth and [ ] s is the angle of full subsidence. B. Panel Edge Location Wherever there is a permanent panel edge, there are large ground deformations induced on the surface on both sides of the permanent panel edge. Therefore whenever possible the panel di¬mension should be designed such that the permanent panel edges could be located in the areas with the least impacts. In terms of permanent edge location, it is best to eliminate any permanent panel edge under a structure or groups of structures. If this cannot be done, the panel should be lengthened to reduce the number of permanent panel edges, or narrower multiple panels advancing in the same direction in a staggered manner could be employed. If the structures are located in Zones II and III, the longer dimension of the structure must be parallel to the nearest perma¬nent edge (Fig. 6.1). But in Zone IV, the longer dimension should be tangential to the corner of the permanent panel edge. If the structure is inclined to the permanent panel edge, it will be sub¬jected to twisting and shearing. C. Direction of Face Advance The direction of face advance should be parallel to the long axis of the structure. But if the structure is to be located at or close to the center of the final subsidence basin, the direction of face advance should be perpendicular to the long axis of the structure. Careful choice of the direction of multiple face advance is the most effective way to reduce structural deformation and thus dam¬age. This applies the principle of overlapping and cancellations of ground deformations, due to multiple face advance, at the right time and at the right intensity, e.g., opposing tilts, concave and convex curvatures, tensile and compressive strains are induced simultaneously on the structure to be protected by two or more faces. D. Use of Yield Chain Pillars In US longwall panels there are generally two or three rows of stiff chain pillars between the panels. The combined width of the chain pillars ranges from 100 to 350 ft(30 to 107m). depending on mining depth. In general, surface movement above the chain pil¬lars after the panels on both sides have been extracted is much smaller, as compared to that in panel center. Thus in order to create critical or supercritical width of opening and eliminate sur¬face bumps over the chain pillars, yield chain pillars may be em¬ployed (Jarosz and Karmis, 1986). However if yield pillars are to be used, it must be designed such that it yields totally right after the panels on both sides have been extracted. Unfortunately cur¬rent yield pillar design techniques cannot predict when and how much it will yield. In summary, whenever possible attempts could be made to lay out the panel in such a way that surface structures are located above chain pillars between panels or above solid coal beyond both ends of the panels. In those areas the surface structures will most likely be unaffected, or if affected, the damage is so minor that no remedial measures are necessary. 6.3 CONTROLLED MINING TECHNIQUES Several mining techniques are available for reducing the sur¬face ground deformations of specific types. Part of Capital Improvement Project SE-754 tendered by New York City Department of Design and Construction included installation of a 96-in. (2.47 m)diameter sewer by pipe jacking methods. The pipe selected by the Contractor, EIC Associates, Newark, New Jersey, was a glass-fiber-reinforced thermosetting resin pipe installed in two reaches: 72 m (235-ft.) and 222 m (728-ft.). The machine selected for the excavation was an open face shield. This paper describes the set up of the tunneling operations, subsurface conditions, progress of excavation, pipe performance and other details of the project including unexpected difficult ground conditions that were encountered during excavation and how these conditions were overcome.

The mining business has numerous risks: equipment availability, labor disruptions, foreign exchange rate, etc., but one of the more important risks is assessing the geology. Improving the “intelligence” of geology can and will have significant positive effect on reducing mining risk and thus enhancing operational and financial performance. The use of the advanced Radio Imaging Method (RIM-IV) on coal seams and ore bodies can create useful two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) high-resolution images that provide mining engineers with additional intelligence to better plan and improve operations. Improved operational performance will reduce costs and enable mining companies to meet market and financial commitments. For the past decade the underground coal mining industry has been moving toward “super panels” in long-wall mining, and “super sections” for room-and-pillar mining. These mining conventions employ wider faces, longer gate roads, greater room-and-pillar density, and an increased scale in the amount and complexity of mining equipment. An obvious economy of scale exists: amortization of setup investments over greater volume of coal enables mine management to reduce fixed cost per ton. Restricted by equipment considerations, face widths have currently reached about 1,100 ft. Wider longwall panels are planned, with 1,400-ft widths, but this requires an incremental step in hardware that the original equipment manufacturers will soon bring to market. However, longwall panel length has not yet reached its limits, with some panels planned up to 25,000 ft. While longwall panel length is generally dictated by reserve size and extent, practical restrictions in mine planning also include seam thickness, ventilation requirements, or restrictions involving methane drainage. Super panels have certainly enabled the industry to keep pushing the limits of productivity improvement. However, important considerations in mine planning, now and especially in the future, will be driven in large part by geological factors. While larger developments improve productivity and capture economies of scale, the fact that super panels can contain at least four times the area or coal volume means that the probability of encountering serious anomalies is at least four times greater than with the “conventional” panels. Given the increased probability of encountering anomalies, improved assessment of geology is important for super panels and super sections. Proper due diligence requires a thorough and competent evaluation of a mining property and its ore reserve. Using improved geostatistical techniques is most important, and improving the base data for the analysis is equally important. The old cliché “garbage in, garbage out” certainly applies. Also, the quality of coal reserves is (or has been) declining, so, in the future, mining will be in deeper and most likely thinner seams—and these seams appear to contain greater anomalies that threaten efficient operations. To counter the impact of reserve deterioration, the industry is moving toward greater use of geophysical tools and services. Fortunately, tools such as the Radio Imaging Method™ (RIM-IV) system have been improved and can provide the industry with enhanced 2-D and 3-D images of coal seams and ore bodies. To identify and profile the best areas of a coal reserve, geologists, engineers, and mine managers need greater intelligence in the form of RIM-IV tomographic maps of longwall panels and room-and-pillar sections. These images have enhanced the understanding of in-seam features, which in turn has improved operational plans and performance.

High methane liberation and mining depth were two major factors which prompted the development of a high- capacity face ventilation system at Jim Walter Re- sources, Inc., No. 4 Mine. No. 4 Mine, one of four deep shaft mines presently under development, is located approximately 50 miles southwest of Birmingham, near Brookwood, Alabama (Figure 1). The coal seams under development are located in the Warrior Coal Field and include both the Blue Creek and Mary Lee Seams, Depth of cover averages 2000 ft. (610 m) with an average total mining height of 8 ft. C2.4 m). [ ] It is generally accepted that the methane content of a particular coal increases as the overburden depth is increased [l] ; experience to date has shown that the gas condition of the No. 4 Mine is no exception to the rule. To further compound the problem, the over- burden depth, coupled with the relatively soft nature of the Blue Creek coal, has resulted in an initial layout based upon 150 x 150 ft (45.7 x 45.7 m) centers. Considering the above-mentioned mining conditions, the means and the effectiveness of the face ventilation system becomes paramount where productivity is concerned.

Kaolin clay has a broad range of applications with the paper market representing the largest end-use. Calcined kaolin finds application in paper, paint and plastics primarily for its high brightness and light scattering ability. It is well known as an extender for TiO2. Meta-kaolin possesses a unique set of physical and chemical characteristics finding use in both traditional kaolin/calcined kaolin markets as well as other unique applications. This paper discusses the intricacies of manufacture and the key physical and chemical properties of meta-kaolin. Specific applications and the relationship of the physical/chemical properties to end-use performance are discussed.

Paques and Umicore have demonstrated the feasibility of biological treatment of the highly complex Hoboken wastewaters in a1 m3/h pilot plant at Umicore Precious Metals, Hoboken, Belgium. In the first step arsenic was precipitated from copper smelter effluent as As2S3using biogenic produced H2S. Other metals such as copper, lead and cadmium were also removed as MeS to concentrations well below the discharge levels. Subsequently, sulfate and nitrate were removed to low concentrations (<300 mg/l and < 5 mg/l respectively) in high rate engineered bioreactors. Sulfide produced in the sulfate reduction process was recycled to step 1 for metals precipitation. Selenite/selenate was partly removed in the sulfide precipitation step, whereas the excess was biologically reduced and removed as selenium to concentrations <0.2 mg/l.

Much of what is reported was published elsewhere over a year ago (i.e., in their reference: Chi, G., Fuerstenau, M.C., Brandt, R.C. and Ghosh, A., 1996, "Improved comminution efficiency through controlled blasting during mining," International Journal of Min¬eral Processing, Vol. 47, p. 93). There is nothing unusual or significant about a 10% or more difference in grindability between two materials of apparently similar origin and other attributes (such as chemical assays, hardness and specific gravity). Consider also that: • the materials came from different locations in the pit; • only two sets of four blastholes were considered per blast: • spatial orientation with respect to the face and other blastholes was also altered; • only two pairs of data were collected; • the impact of sampling error and bias, • both of which could be significant in this case; and • normal experimental error in parameter measurement and calculation. It is clearly inappropriate to draw any conclusions with regard to cause-and-effect relationships without first presenting a thorough error analysis. A substantial number of randomly selected test and control areas might provide meaningful statistical evidence of the claimed effect of the variables being studied. Even that appears doubtful, however, because Figures 3 and 4 show about as much variation in crushing energy for the two "regular" conditions vs. regular and altered conditions. On a separate, but also important issue, broad experience with autogenous/semiautogenous milling has shown that smaller or weaker feed material results in reduced tonnage. ? Reply Thank you for the opportunity to respond to the comments of Messrs. Mclvor ant Fink. The points raised are addressed in the order of presentation. As the commenters noted, there are parallels between this article and a previous manuscript. The reason for these complementary articles is that the audiences for the two publications are different, although there is obviously some overlap. We believe that the different audiences each profit from the technical aspects of the two manuscripts. We are not in agreement that a grindability difference of 10% is insignificant. The laboratory work is corroborated by data obtained at plant scale, which confirms that an increase in throughput of the same magnitude (between 5% and 10%) is achieved when the blasting pattern is modified, i.e., reduced from 9 to 8 m (29.5 to 26.2 ft). This increase in throughput translates into substantial power savings for ore grinding. No differences in appearance in the rock were noted between the two adjacent areas. Rock in both areas belonged to the same rock mass/block, which was quite homogeneous and without geological features in between that could create drastic differences in comminution characteristics. Given the resources, we would have sampled from all of the holes. Additional data would certainly have been desirable, as would have been additional funding to expand the study. Their comment, "spatial orientation with respect to the face and other blastholes was also altered," is not clear. Figure 1 does not show the initiation sequence. Without the initiation sequence, we do not understand how the commenters concluded that spatial orientation with respect to the face and other blastholes was altered. The commenters may be trying to make the point that the four-hole configurations with respect to the original bench face are not exactly the same. In fragmenting the

Metallurgical balances are fundamental to the successful design and operation of concentration and dewatering circuits. With computerized balance techniques gaining prominence in recent years, it is essential that engineers understand the basic principles that underlie the new methods, as well as the various applications for design of new plants and analysis of existing operations. This chapter discusses two important types of metallurgical balance: (1) steady-state design (2) operating data adjustment Application of computerized steady- state design balancing is demonstrated through the example of a typical copper concentrator flowsheet. Operating data adjustment to achieve a consistent balance is demonstrated for a typical concentrator operation.

Many organizations are realizing that continual improvement in health and safety relies on addressing the potential for various forms of human error. Of these, violations are often the most frequent form associated with accidents. These occur when an individual, or individuals, deliberately contravenes established and known safety rules. They have been associated with up to 90% of accidents and incidents in some industries and yet rarely receive the systematic attention they deserve in the promotion of safety. This paper presents underlying motives which cause violations. These can vary significantly from mine to mine and from job to job. Managers need some measure of attitudes to determine the underlying motives behind violations if they are to determine effective strategies for promoting safe behaviour. Questionnaires form the starting point to address attitudes and the motives behind rule violations. The choice of the most suitable questionnaire, however, will vary from organization to organization. Guidelines on the choice of questionnaire are offered.

1984 saw the 30th anniversary of a momentous event in Soviet geology-the discovery of kimberlites in Siberia, an event that vaulted the Soviet Union to second rank among the world&apos;s producers of both gem and industrial diamonds. There are many legends associated with this story, legends about those who predicted the discovery and those who achieved it in the field. The story told here unfolded during the field campaigns of the 1940s through 1960s, as witnessed by the authors and their companies of an earlier generation. This story illustrates science, chance, and human emotions at work, resulting in a blend of conviction, courage, bureaucratic sniping, and competition for glory. At the same time, it is an illustration of the workings of the Soviet exploration system. In a broader sense, it is the realization of the Russian image-boundless natural wealth, indomitable ingenuity, and the rigid political economic system that permeates the Russian landscape as well as the people. Most accounts of the Siberian diamond saga begin with statements such as, "This discovery confirmed the predictions of...", or "It was a result of predictions of one of the greatest Soviet geologists, Academician V.S. Sobelov...". These are only part of the truth. It had become apparent even in the 1930s that the Siberian Platform contained one of the Earth&apos;s greatest Basaltic provinces, described in a monograph by Sobolev...; and at the end of the thirties, G.G. Moor of the Institute of Arctic Geology found alnoites, similar in many ways to kimberlites. At the same time, the famous polar geologist, N.N. Urvantsev found other kimberlite like rocks in the southern Taymir Peninsula, adjacent to the Siberian Platform. In publications describing these rocks, Moor and Urvantsev mentioned for the first time the possibility of finding diamondiferous kimberlites similar to those in South Africa. Unfortunately, Urvantsev spent little time in the field between terms in concentration camps. Moor was considered by his superiors to be no more than a good descriptive petrographer; they suggested to him that his conclusions should be backed up by more highly regarded specialists. Thereupon, Moor asked Sobolev to coauthor a paper with him and this became the widely quoted prediction about diamonds in Siberia. Another early paper should also be mentioned, an unpublished paper found by M.I. Rabkin in the geological archives of the Norilsk Metallurgical Plant, written by Yu. M. Sheinmann when he worked in the concentration camp there in the late forties. This report placed the probable location of yet-to-be-discovered kimberlites within less than 100 km of their correct location.
