"INTRODUCTION Tunnel is a closed space structure and it is necessary to ensure the sufficient time and route for safe evacuation for the tunnel users in case of a tunnel fire. In order to do so, damages and collapse of the tunnel linings and the secondary disasters can be avoided. Furthermore, the road tunnel is one of important infrastructural facilities and stopping its function for a long time for a tunnel fire could cause a great economic loss. Therefore, the tunnel structure shall be the one which can be repaired as soon as possible, and the fire protection methods need to be selected among those which enable the service to start as early as possible. The necessity of the fire protection works is evaluated for the tunnel structure with the consideration of the expensive tunnel construction cost and the economic effects of the tunnel service. Naturally, the fire protection works, which can protect the tunnel linings from the tunnel fire with small repairs, are inevitable. Design engineers of the fire protection works estimate the scale of fire from the degree of damages on the linings and its repair cost, the effect of fire extinguishers placed inside of the tunnel, the secondary disasters in accordance with the tunnel lining damages if any, and the ratio of fire protection cost calculated from tunnel operation cost. Based on this information, the engineers design the fire protection works according to the permissible limits Among the design cases of the tunnel fire protection in Japan, as shown in Table 1, there is no cases that used the fire temperature-time curve to design the fire protection works for large fire caused by vehicles catching fire. However, the most of cases used 30-60 minutes for fire duration based on the entry prohibition of dangerous goods carrying vehicles or the effect of early fire fighting. This paper will study the variation between different methods used for fire protection in road tunnel in Japan to evaluate them and try to found some recommendations. Especial l care will be attention to Polypropylenes (PP) which is starting to be applied lately."

Introduction Treatment of ores to recover metal and mineral values results in waste materials usually in the form of dilute slurries. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) investigated a technique for dewatering phosphatic clay waste by flocculating with polyethylene oxide (PEO) and dewatering the resulting floes on a static screen and/or trommel screen (Schemer et al., 1985). In the investigation, it was determined that PEO was far superior to polyacrylamide polymers for this type of dewatering. This paper discusses reasons for this superior performance. Comparison of PEO with polyacrylamides Dewatering experiments were conducted by adding PEO solution from a burette to a stirred clay slurry. The dewatering endpoint was characterized by rotation of the floc mass as a unit, a clear supernate, a maximum floc size, and a minimum floc volume. Additional water was removed from the floes by hand squeezing (Schemer et al., 1985). The clays investigated were sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and aluminum exchanged montmorillonite and attapulgite. Nine commercially available (Superfloc) polyacrylamides were compared with PEO at two polymer concentrations. Results are summarized in Table 1. The solids content of the dewatered clays ranged between 24% and 33% and was highest for PEO-treated material. These results and the data in Table 1 indicate that PEO is superior to polyacrylamide in terms of polymer dosage required. Superflocs 16 through 128, like PEO, are nonionic and should give similar results to those for PEO if the flocculation mechanism is the same for both type polymers. Superflocs 204 through 214 are anionic with increasing anionic character from 204 to 214. Generally, the anionic polymers gave the best results for the polyacrylamides tested, but in terms of dosage they were not as good as PEO. Correlation between flocculation and dewaterability of waste slurries The overall mechanism for mechanically induced clay dewatering is not completely known, but certain observations can be made. For instance, when a polymer is adsorbed on a clay such as montmorillonite, the polymer desorbs interlayer water. Polymer adsorption is driven by favorable entropy changes associated with this water desorption. It is also known that the -CH2-CH2- links of the PEO chain are sufficiently hydrophobic to lead to physical adsorption of the polymer (Theng, 1979). For montmorillonite slurries, the sheet-like fundamental particles, called tactoids, consist of a small, variable number of aluminosilicate layers together with interlayer water and exchange ions. The flocculation process consists of adsorption of polymer on the tactoid. Loops and tails of polymer that extend into solution then adsorb on another tactoid, forming a bridge. Mechanical action, induced by hand squeezing or in a trammel, joins the bridged tactoids face-to-face and edge-to-edge to form regions of high density. Similar orientation effects are observed for the needle-like attapulgite crystals (Schemer et al., 1985). Proposed flocculation model Generally, statements concerning flocculation and dewaterability apply to both PEO and the polyacrylamides. However, PEO has additional interaction with the clay material when compared with polyacrylamides. PEO is a polymer with repeating -CH2-CH2-O- groups and interacts with montmorillonite through a water bridge whose strength is greatly influenced by the exchange ion. Due to the intrinsic variability in orebodies, similar metallurgical behaviour of all material sent to the concentrator is expected to have some variability. Still some specific ores have anomalous performance which can severely impact on the concentrator’s production of metal, in this case copper. The study first will show the mineralogical characteristics of “usual ore” and of this specific “abnormal ore” which will have to be processed by the concentrator in the future. After that base conditions on both ores and flotation test procedure will be explained. Later the different alternatives tested regarding collectors and modifiers results will be compared. Finally, after discussing the different results with different reagents and considering operational variables of the concentrator, Floticor PD 702 is recommended to obtain the best copper recovery without increase in excess mass recovery.

Phosphate reserves have been and still are a controversial subject. Some published estimates are particularly conservative and have caused concern in government and political circles that southeastern phosphates are a dwindling resource. "Ores and ore bodies" are a function of economics that relate to a time/demand factor. The history of phosphates and other mineral commodities is one of mineral deposits (resources) ever becoming ore (reserves) via a long term logic based on price, supply, and demand factors operating through time and improved technology. Projections indicate that southeastern phosphates are sufficient for several centuries of operations at present production rates.

Chemical and physical properties of thiol collectors are reexamined to compare the prospects of heavy metal-thiolate or disulphide surface reaction products acting as actual collector species. Recent evidences for the existence and importance of each of these types of adsorbed species on sulphide minerals are also discussed. A conclusion is reached that partial coverage by chemisorbed heavy metal thiolate is often sufficient to confer practical levels of hydrophobicity and floatability. Only on a few highly conducting and "noble" sulphides does adsorbed disulphide-type collector oxidation product appear to be significant.

A program has been carried out over the last two years to apply the technology of High Gradient Magnetic Separation (HGMS) to the problem of mineral beneficiation and specifically oxidized taconite iron ores. This program, supported by the RANN division of the National Science Foundation, has consisted of a laboratory program at the Francis Bitter National Magnet Lab- oratory at MIT and a pilot investigation at the Hanna Mining Company Research Laboratory. 1 The laboratory tests were conducted using several batch type high gradient separators and a continuous separator with a rotating matrix which was constructed at the beginning of the program. The high field magnets available at F.B.N.M.L. were used for investigations above 10 kG but most of the test work was performed in the range of this field value. Ore samples were contributed by several iron ore companies and consisted of oxidized taconites having goethite and hematite as their principal components.

"INTRODUCTION The Jefferson Barracks Tunnel is in the final stages of design and is expected to go out to bid in the summer of 2016. The project is located in south St. Louis County along the west bank of the Mississippi River, about 13 km downstream of the St. Louis Gateway Arch. The project consists of a deep sanitary sewer tunnel, a deep pump station and several intakes. The intakes will divert sanitary flows into the tunnel and the tunnel will convey the flows by gravity to the Lemay No. 3 Pump Station, which will pump them up into the Lemay Waste Water Treatment Plant. The tunnel is about 5.4 km long and will be lined with 84-inch (2.1 m) fiberglass pipe. It drops at a gradient of 0.1 percent from south to north and will be bored through strong limestone using a hard-rock tunnel boring machine (TBM). The diameter of the TBM is anticipated to be about 3.4 m. The Owner’s original concept was for a relatively shallow tunnel so as to minimize construction and pumping costs. The preferred alignment ran close to the river, next to the existing force main, which was to be abandoned. Keeping the tunnel close to the force main would reduce the amount of shallow sewer work needed to connect the existing feeder sewers to the new tunnel. Several geotechnical investigations were performed, with shallowly focused geophysics and the borings all going exactly down the conceptual tunnel depth. Limestone bluffs run along the Missouri side of the river. These bluffs are pockmarked by sinkholes and riddled with karst. Large, well-known caves occur both north and south of the alignment. Karst features, including deep crevices and possible caves, were found in those early geotechnical investigations. Many of these features extended well below the level of the Mississippi River and would have been encountered by the tunnel. If a large crevice or cave were encountered, then the inflow of mud and water into the tunnel could have been large and possibly uncontrollable. Something had to be done to mitigate this situation. Pre-excavation grouting was considered, but the program would have been huge and extremely expensive. Using a closed-face TBM with bolted and gasketed lining was also considered, but that too was both risky and extremely expensive. The Owner could have abandoned the tunnel altogether and built a new force main, but that would have brought a whole new set of problems and was undesirable to the Owner. The last option was to move the tunnel away from the karst."

Three run-of-mine bituminous coals, ranging in rank from low volatile to high volatile A, were floated at nominal -28 mesh (590 µm), -100 mesh (150 µm), and -400 mesh (37µm) feed particle sizes with selected pyrite depressants and a dispersant. For the three coals tested, pyrite and ash -forming minerals were usually rejected best at -100 mesh feed particle size. Depressant additions tended to improve flotation selectivity between pyrite and coal. When joint dispersant-depressant systems were used at -100 mesh (150 µm) feed particle sizes, the total sulfur content of the clean coal decreased further. For a comparable coal yield, less fuel oil collector was required for the flotation of -100 mesh coal than was required for the flotation of either -28 or -400 mesh feed.

Sol-gel processing is rapidly becoming an important process for producing such advanced materials as high activity catalysts, fiber optics and ceramic precursors. These materials can be tailor made with properties unique to sol particles as well as the gel aggregates by controlling production of the sol, the formation of the gel, and the removal of the interstitial fluids. This paper presents colloidal and kinetic principles of sol generation and gel formation. Hydrolysis of alkoxides provides the best means of controlling sol production and electrostatic stabilization enables the formation of the most homogeneous gels. Gelation occurs by hierarchial aggregation which produces inhomogeneities much larger than the sol particles. Colloidal and kinetic principles can be applied to reduce the size of the inhomogeneities and obtain high performance transparent insulation and new ceramic composites.

Bismuth, "the green metal," has become an important substitute for lead. The uranium industry was never really dead, anti-nuclear activists just wanted the world to think it was. And diamonds are fast becoming a miner's best friend. These commodities and others were discussed in May 1997 at the 47th Annual Minerals Processing Division meeting, held at the Broadmoor resort in Colorado Springs, CO. The meeting was put on by the SME Colorado subsection and was attended by about 115 people. In addition to the above three commodities, attendees learned more about the state of the copper industry, as well as lead and zinc and gold and silver. The program also included discussions of molybdenum, platinum and project financing. The following is a summary of some of the presentations.

The McKinley Mine is located in the northwest New Mexico, in McKinley County, approximately 25 miles from Gallup. The mine is operated by The Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Co. (P&M), a wholly owned subsidiary of the Chevron Corporation. P&M is headquartered in Englewood, Colorado. Since the McKinley Mine began operations in 1962 a total of 83,391,000 metric tons of coal have been sold through 1990. The 1991 production was approximately 5.000.000 metric tons. The mine operations are contained on a 109.000 square kilometers lease area of which 44.000 square kilometers are on the Navajo Nation. The present customer base consists of four utilities and one industrial account, all of which are located in Arizona. The utility customers are the Arizona Public Service Co. Cholla Station at Joseph City, The Salt River Project. Coronado Generating Station near Joseph City, and The Tucson Electric Company, Irvington Generating Station in Tucson. The industrial customer is the Stone Container Corporation, Snowflake Paper Mill.

US coal production increased 3% to a record 832 Mt (917 million st) in 1987, according to preliminary Energy Information Administration (EIA) data. Most of the increase was due to the unusually warm summer and the increased coal-fired electricity demand for air conditioning. Drought conditions in the Northwest lowered hydroelectric generation, contributing to the higher use of coal by electric utilities. However, excess production capacity and increased competition from natural gas added further downward pressure on delivered coal prices, continuing the declining price trend of the last several years. Coal production by region Appalachian coal production reached 402 Mt (443 million st) in 1987. This is about 3% more than in 1986 and just short of its 1984 peak. Virginia produced 7% more than its 1986 level, due to increased coal-based electricity demand. Smaller percentage increases were attained in eastern Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Ohio and Alabama were the only major coal-producing states in Appalachia that produced less coal in 1987 than in the previous year. In the Interior region, 1987 coal production reached a record 182 Mt (201 million st), about 2% above 1986. Illinois is the largest coal-producing state in that region. Production there fell about 3.7%, primarily because of lowered demand at electric utility plants in Alabama and Tennessee. However, this was more than offset by production increases in western Kentucky, Texas, and Indiana. After falling slightly in 1986, coal production in the West resumed its upward trend to a record 248 Mt (273 million st). Wyoming is that region's dominant coal producer. It mined 7% more coal than in 1986. Wyoming's increase offset the 11% decline in New Mexico production and smaller declines in other Western states. Coal consumption and prices Domestic coal consumption reached a record 759 Mt (837 million st) in 1987. Most of the increase resulted from the unusually warm summer that led to higher than normal peak demands for electricity in the third quarter. Electric utility coal consumption was also boosted by the below-normal hydroelectric generation that resulted from low water levels in the Northwest. These factors more than offset the effects of increased nuclear power generation and competition from natural gas. As a result, coal provided 56.9% of electric utility generation in 1987, compared with 55.7% in 1986. Electric utilities consumed a record 651 Mt (718 million st) of coal. While electric utility coal consumption increased, the average cost of coal to utilities was down, from $1.58 per million Btu in 1986 to $1.52 in 1987. The average price of coal delivered to utilities in 1987 was $35.09/t ($31.84 per st), the lowest since 1981. Coal prices were held down by a glut of coal supplies and by a decline in the average price of natural gas to electric utilities. Coal consumption at coke plants in 1987 was 2.6% above the 1986's 32.5 Mt (36 million st). This increase reflects steel's recent resurgence. Coking coal demand, though, was reduced by the increased use of continuous casting and electric furnace technologies. The average price of coal delivered to coke plants fell from $56.02 to $51.35/t ($50.83 to $46.59 per st). Coal consumption in the industries other than coke plants amounted to 68.2 Mt (75.2 million st) in 1987, slightly less than in 1986. Coal lost part of its market share to natural gas, which was priced favorably relative to coal. The average price of coal delivered to manufacturing plants was at its lowest level of the current decade. It fell from $39.50/t in 1986 to $37.27/t ($35.84 to $33.81 per st). Residential and commercial coal consumption fell to 6.2 Mt (6.9 million st) that is 9.8% below 1986 and the lowest since 1980. This decline is also attributed to the relatively low price of natural gas in 1987. Coal stocks Coal consumers held 169 Mt (186 million st) of coal stocks at the end of 1987, 5.9% above the 1986 year-end level. Most of this increase was due to stockpiling by electric utilities in anticipation of a possible strike by the United Mine Workers of America early in 1988. Stocks at electric utilities increased to an estimated 154 Mt (171 million st) at the end of 1987, 5.6% higher than the previous year. This was much lower than 1984's stock buildup. Coke plants increased their coal stocks by 30% in 1987 to 3.5 Mt (3.9 million st), rebounding from the unusually low inventories of 1985 and 1986. Geostatistics has been applied in many mining feasibility studies throughout the world during the last decade. Recently geostatistics has begun to be applied to the field of mining processes by attempting to aid in the definition of the best mining policy. For a feasibility study the grade-tonnage relationships give a reasonable order of magnitude estimate of the ore reserves within the deposit. But the reserves that will actually be recovered, will vary depending upon the mining methods and the technical means used. The profit earning capacity of the mining project is determined by a great many factors, such as for instance: accessibility of reserves to extracting machines, the haulage distance between the mine and the mill, the variability of produced ore (tonnage and grades) which could necessitate stockpiles or blending areas?

U.S. Bureau of Mines researchers conducted field studies at an abandoned copper-gold mine tailings impoundment. Pore water quality was analyzed in the vadose and saturated zones. Three statistical procedures were employed to summarize the variability within and between the two zones. The results indicated that linear combinations of those variables reflecting sulfide oxidation and aluminum-silicate weathering best summarized the variability in each zone, and that the zones were most different on the basis of sulfide oxidation variables. The geochemical computer code WATEQ4F was used to assess the solubility status (saturation index) of minerals. Saturation indices of sulfide oxidation and aluminum-silicate weathering minerals were different in the two zones. It was demonstrated that the statistical analyses produced similar and complementary results to the geochemical code.

A major bauxite belt was discovered and evaluated from 1969 to 1974 by P. T. Alcoa Minerals of Indonesia in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. The proven reserves of beneficiated bauxite are 800 million tons averaging 38.6% AA1203 and 3.0% RSiO2. Inferred reserves of washed bauxite are in excess of 2 billion tons. The bauxite occurs as capping of low lying hills which were formed during the post Paleogene peneplaination stage. The overburden varies from 0.6 to 3.8 meters and the nodular bauxite horizon from 2.2 to 5.2 meters. The deposits were formed by the in situ weathering of predominantly acidic and basic intrusive rocks.

There are similarities, and differences, in the surfactants used in cosmetics and detergents. In both applications anionic surfactants constitute the major category. Their main function is to clean, i.e. remove grease and particulate matter from fibrous or hard surface substrates. Cationic surfactants are used for conditioning substrates. Nonionic surfactants can function as a substrate cleanser but are seldom used as such in cosmetics; however, selected non-ionics are often employed as a primary emulsifier. Several specialized nonionic surfactants are used as a secondary surfactant in formulations to promote foaming and emulsification. Specific examples and modes of action of surfactants will be presented.

This paper presents an application of analytical hierarchy pro- cess (AHP) to predict the ranking of three beneficiation methods for a low grade, bulk gold deposit located in the interior Alaska. Seven criteria (attributes) were used for evaluating each beneficiation method. For each criterion a matrix of pairwise comparison between methods was developed. The normalized eigenvector of each matrix scales the beneficiation methods with regards to that criterion. An overall scale is constructed by weighting the scales of all the criteria. Methodology used also indicates a measure of inconsistency. This measure is useful in identifying possible errors in expressing judgments as well as actual inconsistencies in the judgment themselves. The outcome of the pro- cess is the best or optimum beneficiation method, considering all the necessary objectives, criteria, and alternatives in a single integrated framework.

"Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of an open-pit mine has several challenges. A good quality mesh of the model domain is a pre-requisite for convergence in solution. Good quality tetrahedral meshing and insertion of prism layers in faceted open-pit mine geometry is complicated due to presence of numerous vertices and ridges. Presence of vertices and ridges result in poor quality tetra elements and holes in prism layers, which cause instability in the model. Good quality pit bottom prism mesh elements significantly improve the formation of velocity boundary layer and thermal boundary layer at the pit bottom. This results in an expected temperature dependent micrometeorological buoyancy flow in the pit. Whereas, model geometry without a prism layer, results in abrupt temperature gradient near pit bottom. Buoyancy flow and recirculation have significant effect in lifting mechanism of fugitive dust particles generated near pit bottom. Representative initial and boundary conditions and selection of appropriate turbulence model have significant influences on the simulation results. In this paper, three-dimensional models of open-pit mines are developed using commercial CFD software (CRADLE-CFD). Important constraints and various consequences in modeling complex open-pit geometries are presented. INTRODUCTION Application of Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to model an open-pit mine to predict fugitive dust and pollutant concentrations in and around a mine is relatively new. In former Soviet republic (USSR), Baklanov [1] and Belousov [2, 3] presented numerical models of pollutant transport in open-pit mines in Arctic regions. In recent years, advances in mathematical and computational fields have enabled better modeling of pollutant dispersion phenomenon around mines using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Several CFD software packages have been used by various researchers to model the pollutant transport in open-pit mines. Works by Alvarez et al. [4]; Lowndes et al. [5]; Silvester et al. [6]; Torno et al. [7]; Choudhury and Bandopadhyay [8]; Collingwood et al. [9]; Raj et al. [10] and Flores et al. [11]; are examples of application of various commercial and open source CFD packages (COMSOL, ANSYS, OpenFOAM) to model pollutant transport in open-pit mines. These researches provided a strong background for additional research involving CFD modeling of open-pit mines. Due to the limitations of computational times and capacity, 3D modeling and various aspects of fugitive dust dispersion in open-pit mines remained unexplored."
