This paper discusses the replacement of AEROFLOAT ® 1 25 promoter by AERO ® 5688 promoter at Sonora Mining Corp.'s California Mother Lode concentrator. Flotation concentrate is trucked 120 miles to a leach plant in Nevada, so the reduced mass resulting from higher gold grades and reduced talceous gangue and barren pyrite resulting from this change in promoters has brought about a major decrease in shipping costs. Preliminary laboratory testing indicated that free milling gold and controlled amounts of pyrite could be floated using Aero 5688 promoter with reduced dosages of Aero 350 xanthate.2 Extensive plant trials confirmed that the new reagent suite could indeed maintain gold recoveries while reducing total mass. Improved froth characteristics also improved operating flexibility in treating various ore types, and overall reagent costs have been reduced.

The function of the geological engineer is to assist in mine planning and operations by collecting, interpreting, and applying geologic data to the solution of engineering problems. The geologist supports this effort by collecting additional geologic information specifically useful to the engineer. This use of geologic information reinforces the value of mine geology to the mining process beyond the traditional role of orebody definition. Work discussed includes: evaluation of caving strategies at the Climax and Henderson mines; support definition and slope stability at the Climax mine; and some uses of geology in cavability estimation for the Mount Emmons project.

Simulation has established itself as an accepted tool for the design and optimization of complex minerals processing plants. This paper addresses the use of simulation as a tool for the design and optimization of carbon-in-pulp and carbon-in-leach (CIP/CIL) plants. The complex, interactive nature of CIP/CIL plants makes detailed experimentation an expensive and time consuming approach to CIP/CIL plant design and/or optimization. This paper discusses a simulation-based software tool that can make the process of CIP/CIL plant design and/or optimization much more cost effective. Many of the issues and problems pertaining to the use of simulation for CIP/CIL design and operation are generic. Thus, this paper also attempts to highlight generic issues that must be solved before simulation will become a more widely used design and optimization tool. Requirements for the application of simulation for CIP/CIL plant design and optimization are highlighted. Similar problems and issues can be identified for most mineral processing plants.

This paper will deal with some of the considerations which, were involved in the design and construction of the uranium mills in the Elliot Lake area . These plants, eleven in number, range from 1500 to 6500 tons per day milling capacity. Most references are with respect to the seven plants in the Rio Tinto Group which have a combined milling capacity in excess of 20,000 tons per day. In dealing with such abroad subject as mill design, one has the choice, of covering a few specific problems in great detail, or else attempting to cover many subjects superficially and briefly. In preparing this presentation, an attempt has been made to compromise on these extremes, and to select some interesting illustrations which are of general interest in the field of mill design, and of value to persons concerned with mill design broadly, beyond the field of uranium mills.

"With the final goal of ultrasonic application to ion exchange in a resin-in-pulp (RIP) system, the feasibility of an indirect ultrasonic application with a submersed ultrasonic probe was investigated first for the enhancement of ion exchange in the following resin-in-solution (RIS) system: Lewatit MonoPlus MP 600XL in an artificial solution with 106 ppm uranium. Ultrasonic radiation enhanced the ion exchange efficiency without mechanical degradation of resin. For 3.6 g/L of resin, the enhancement was 79 percent after 10 min of ion exchange and it gradually decreased to 11 percent at 60 min. In addition, a preliminary test of the mechanical stability of the resin in the RIP system showed little mechanical fracture of the resin due to ultrasound, which indicates that indirect ultrasonic application by a submersed ultrasonic probe is applicable for RIP systems. IntroductionIn uranium ore processing, the ion exchange process has been used on a commercial scale for preconcentration and purification (Gonzalez-Luque and Streat, 1984). The ion exchange process is divided into two processes: (1) a resin-in-column process with the uranium-bearing solutions passed through columns containing resins and (2) a resin-in-pulp (RIP) process with the leached ore pulp exposed to resins. The latter does not require the separation process of leach liquor and ore solids, which reduces process costs. This process, which has been developed commercially since 1955, has a certain drawback. The adsorption rate and efficiency in the RIP process are relatively low, so numerous contacts between resins and leached ore pulp are needed, which adds to the cost (Merritt, 1971). It is necessary to study methods to reduce process costs.Ultrasound can intensify mass transfer, increase the rate of chemical reactions, and change reaction pathways (Thompson and Doraiswamy, 1999; Luque de Castro and Priego-Capotem, 2007; Adewuyi, 2001; Luque-Garcia and Luque de Castro, 2003). It has great potential in chemistry and is especially considered to be a promising method for enhancing mass-transfer-limited processes, such as ion exchange. Enterzari and Tahmasbi (2009) reported the effect of ultrasound on water softening by ion exchange. Band et al. (1997) proposed a modulated ultrasound application to water desalination with ion-exchange hollow fibers. These reports revealed that ion exchange kinetics could be enhanced by the application of ultrasound. As for hydrometallurgy, Feng and Aldrich (2000) reported that the elution of an ion exchange resin was enhanced by the use of ultrasonication."

For the REM (Réseau Express Métropolitain) project, a 2500 m tunnel was built using a tunnel boring machine (TBM) under the Montreal Pierre Elliott Trudeau Airport (ADM). Although the geology under the Montreal Airport (ADM) would have been suitable for an excavation with a hard rock machine, the rst section reuired an earth pressure balance (EPB) TBM due to the soft soil located under wetlands. After excavating 280 m, the TBM was blocked in a transition zone of unconsolidated, water-bearing soils directly above the underlying bedrock. A free air intervention was not possible due to these geological conditions. After several failed attempts to create a slurry cake for hyperbaric interventions, a ground freezing system was designed and implemented, incorporating angled pipes drilled from outside the wetlands to directly in front of the cutterhead. This paper discusses the engineering reuired to form a frozen, water-tight zone in front of the cutterhead using liuid nitrogen. It also describes the complex method of replacing the disc cutters while holding the ground freezing system active in a manner protecting the health and safety of the workers.

Environmental monitoring requires major effort and expense but management of data receives less attention. A modem database system can manage hydrochemistry, water levels, meteorology, geology and downhole geophysics data and is flexible to allow the storage of ad hoc data. Reports can be customized by the user and derived data generated from input values. The production of high quality maps with contours and hydrochemical diagrams is an essential part of the reporting process. These maps integrate directly with the current site survey information. These facilities are best provided by storing the data in an industry standard database such as Oracle or Access to which customized AutoCAD and Microsoft Office routines make direct SQL calls.

Using a fuzzy logic controller, a signal applied on the processes may be generated through a linguistic protocol expressing an operator's intuitive control strategies. In this work, fuzzy logic controller and PID controller imposed upon the feedback liquid level control systems for a stirred tank are studied and compared. The construction factors including the shape of membership functions, number of fuzzy variables, number of inputs, number of rules, and different defuzzification methods are considered in design and formulating the fuzzy logic control strategies and algorithms. From the analysis of the strategies and control performances, an optimum controller may be generated by making use of the best combination of these fuzzy construction factors.

Blasting in geothermally high temperature ground and/or extremely reactive ground is an increasing common challenge for surface and underground mines. Many current PETN based non-electric and electronic detonators have manufacturer published in-hole temperature limits ranging from 55°C to 65°C (131°F to 150°F). When confronting blasthole temperatures above the manufacturer published limits, operations may request site-specific guidance and qualification for use. The advised safe loading window for in-hole PETN based detonators is often too short to be practicable for production blasting. To overcome limitations of PETN based initiation systems, surface mines with high temperature ground and/or reactive ground are known to load blastholes with a qualified high temperature bulk emulsion that are top primed with a cartridge of temperature qualified detonator sensitive emulsion plus an RDX detonating cord downline. As there is no in-hole delay detonator in this system, blasthole timing is accomplished with surface delays. Although this system is safe, top priming and surface delaying does influence floor quality and top size fragmentation, and safe loading windows times reduce blast block size and increase blasting frequency. A mining company with a site characterized by geothermally high temperature ground plus highly reactive ground employed a blasting system like the one described above. The site desires to improve blasting performance by moving to an in-hole delay initiation system that can withstand the site ground conditions. At the request of the mining house, DynaEnergetics developed an electronic initiation system for application in geothermally high temperature ground and/or extremely reactive ground conditions. The DynaEnergetics IGNEO high temperature electronic initiation system is rated for in-hole use in ground up to 150°C (302°F) for 48 hours. The detonator consists of a high strength detonator with an HMX base charge and thermally resistant downline. To make up a primer, the detonator is inserted into a booster charge assembly that is fitted with a small HMX shape charge. This high energy primer is designed to be compatible and reliable for firing bulk emulsions, including those with high percentages of urea inhibition to combat reactive ground. Up to 1000 detonators may be programmed in 1 ms increments up to 1500 ms. The system is controlled by a digital firing panel that can be used with either a wired or wireless trigger. The system enables high temperature and/or reactive ground sites to utilize in-hole delay initiation and realize the associated performance benefits.

"Surface settlement adjacent to sensitive structures is a challenging issue in the tunnel engineering. In this study, 3D simulation of TBM excavation has been performed with the FLAC3D code and then the results compared with real monitoring data. Sensitivity analysis was carried out for all parameters affecting the surface settlement, such as the tail void grouting pressure (Pt), the face pressure (Pf), the tunnel diameter (D), overburden (q), shield thickness (t) and the length of the shield (L). The results show that the face pressure, tail void grouting and tunnel diameter have a considerable effect on the maximum ground displacement.In this paper, the monitoring data from Mashhad Metro was used to verify the numerical simulation. Data monitoring for about 47 sections between A2 and D2 stations was selected and a multiple regression analysis was performed. Based on this analysis, an empirical relationship was obtained for the coefficient of regression relationship which confirmed the sensitivity analysis.INTRODUCTIONThe surface settlement due to tunnel excavation is a complex issue, since the surface displacement is a function of several parameters that they are related to the excavation method, soil characteristics and TBM elements. Prediction of deformation is a very important issue, especially in urban areas, since these displacements may be affected the superficial structures. In recent studies, one of the most popular empirical relationships that is used to predict the surface displacement has gussian curve that it was suggested by Peck [1, 2]. An analytical relationship was proposed by Chow that its base assume was isotropic of soil, that surface settlement can be estimated based on the tunnel geometry and the shear modulus(G) [3]. Besides these methods numerical approaches such as the Finite Element Method (FEM) and the Finite Difference Method (FDM) have been used over the last twenty years, since numerical modeling has a high capability to simulation a complex soil conditions and irregular geometry [4]. In this study, all aspects of the EPB-TBM on Mashad Metro Line 2 were modeled and the most important influences on surface displacement in urban areas were determined [1, 3]."

A coupled finite element geomechanical- hydrology code is currently under development for application to the problem of predicting groundwater disturbances associated with mine subsidence. The structural-fluid coupling is addressed by calculating the subsided mine geometry, with emphasis placed on determining the strata disturbance and locating damaged regions, for input into a hydrology code, which determines localized volume flow rates and aquifer fluctuations. Benefits from coupling will be best realized when field measurements, an additional aspect of the study concurrent with analytical investigations, indicating the relationship between increasing rock strain and increasing permeability are incorporated into hydraulic material descriptions. From the mid-1980s through 1997, Echo Bay Alaska evaluated reopening the historic Alaska-Juneau (AJ) gold mine. Their original proposed project underwent numerous modifications in order to minimize the potential for significant environmental impacts. One of the major modifications involved changing .the tailings disposal method from a conventional tailings impoundment to submarine tailings disposal (STD). In 1995, the U.S. EPA began work on a Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) to assess the impacts of the STD proposal. Key features of the STD impact assessment included fate and transport modeling to determine the extent of tailings deposition and the use of ecological risk assessment to predict marine impacts during deposition and ecosystem recovery following STD. A key feature of the SEIS regulatory process included a rulemaking proposed by EPA to exempt the AJ tailings from effluent regulations. Critical to success in moving the project forward was early development of an interactive working relationship with other regulatory agencies and the public.

A phase-species classification is suggested for the mathematical models of flotation kinetics. Important models are discussed and the structure of their rate constants and parameters is analyzed. Split or enhancement factors are formulated for different kinetic models. The steady state dynamics of the flotation circuits can always be described in terms of these factors. For simulation of circuits, feed is characterized in a formal manner starting from a multivariate distribution of particles in flotation rate, size and mineral content. Synthesis of optimum circuits which simultaneously searches for the best process variables and structural parameters from a generalized master network is described. Trends in the areas of search algorithms, role of middlings and feed identification etc. are indicated.

The practice of nonsulfide minerals flotation can be best characterized as an evolutionary blend of scientific theory and art. Although extensive fundamental studies have been carried out in the past several decades, and significant theoretical aspects have been developed, plant practice has developed the art form, often ahead of the theory, which is somewhat in contrast to sulfide minerals flotation. Several excellent review articles have been published in the past highlighting both the theoretical aspects and plant practice. An overview of nonsulfide flotation is presented here. Major differences in sulfide and nonsulfide flotation are highlighted. An assessment of the state of nonsulfide flotation, recent advances made in flotation processing, and industry needs are also given.

The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers is seeking empirical slope data from mining companies and other organizations to help establish guides for engineering Judgment in crater excavation for canals and other civil works. Slopes from about 100 open pits and other excavations range in heights to greater than 1000 ft. Factors known or expected to affect stability (and optimum slope inclination) are: geological structural orientation, geological structural ordering, method and technique of blasting, design life of slope, groundwater conditions, depth of excavation, climate, and height. These and other more subtle factors appear to combine and produce an overall effect brought out best on a family of empirical curves relating slope height and inclination.

Though the mining industry is beset with problems-a broad slump in metal prices, a rash of acquisitions and takeover attempts, rising capital costs, and an aggressive Canadian energy program-there was an under-current of optimism at the 1981 AMC conference that's been missing at industry meetings in recent years. The industry anticipates a turnaround in the 1980s, buoyed perhaps by the new spirit of cooperation from the Reagan administration. For the first time in years, it appears that Washington and the mining industry share mutual goals for developing the nation's resources. A number of prominent Reagan officials were on hand during the three-day conference in Denver, September 28-30, to reassure conferees that restrictions plaguing energy and minerals development would be eased. Interior Secretary James Watt and other government speakers promised cooperation in bringing balance to federal public lands policies, a review of regulations that have hampered the industry, and prompt action on domestic minerals policy. Daniel N. Miller, Jr., assistant interior secretary for energy and minerals, said, "It is our intent to dismantle the overhearing bureaucracy that has stifled mineral and energy exploration. We know that Interior's rules have shackled the mining industry in recent years, and we know that those rules must be eased." Miller noted that the administration will not permit mining on national park lands or wildlife refuges, but added that "we must assess a variety of uses of public lands ... we will restore lands to multiple use where practical." EPA administrator Anne Gorsuch assured industry representatives that the administration intends to work within environmental laws and with Congress to review and revise water, soil, and air pollution policies. "We have a strong commitment to see that there are major mid-course corrections" of air regulations, Gorsuch said. Support from these "new friends in Washington" will be crucial in light of the serious problems pressuring the industry. Copper prices have plunged to almost three-year lows and prices for molybdenum, gold, and silver have slumped. Earnings are down and today's high interest rates prevent a quick turnaround. Companies are on edge after the recent takeovers of Kennecott, St. Joe Minerals, and Texasgulf Though the companies may benefit from the major injection of capital that large energy firms can provide, many observers fear the new parent companies won't be willing or able to survive the cyclical metal markets. Arco and Gulf Resources, for example, have been criticized for closing Anaconda's Montana copper facility and the Bunker Hill unit in Idaho, respectively. Canada's national energy program has brought additional pressure on the industry. This policy, which emphasizes Canadian majority ownership of the country's energy sources, resulted in acquisition of Texasgulf's Kidd Creek lead-zinc-silver complex by Canadian and French interests. In response, the American Mining Congress adopted two resolutions on takeovers. One calls for the US government to review laws regulating tender offers and takeovers "to better ensure that principles of fairness and sound investment policy govern such transactions.'' The other asks the government to demand "fairness and reciprocity" as a basis for US policy governing international trade in minerals and investment relations with other countries. AMC's shopping list included four other priority goals, aimed primarily at the Interior Department: • Prompt implementation of Interior's efforts to bring order and balance to rules governing access to public lands for exploration and development. • Statement by the President of a comprehensive and coherent domestic minerals policy. • Amendment of the Clean Air Act to remove impediments to productivity and barriers to economic development that are not necessary to essential goals of the act. • Development of new approaches to better achieve worker health and safety in the most cost-effective manner without penalizing productivity. Almost 6000 mining industry executives attended the 1981 convention-the largest in AMC's 84-year history. As in years past, the conference offered a wide spectrum of presentations-nearly 100 papers in 26 sessions-ranging from commodity forecasts to the latest technical achievements. New Administration Stockpile Goals The minerals availability session included a presentation on management of the minerals stockpile by Paul K. Kruege r of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Krueger notes that rather than providing incentives for development of a domestic raw materials industry, the government has "a history of providing disincentives to industry." In mining industries, he adds, the rate of productivity growth has been -6% over the last six or seven years. Krueger feels there will be a major change under the Reagan administration. In Chile there are significant amounts of gold in flotation tailings that could be recovered, being heap leaching the most promising alternative. In order to determine the feasibility of treating these tailings by this method, a detailed study is carried out using 4 representative samples. After defining the best conditions an economic evaluation is done for a plant treating 200 tpd, sensibilizing with respect to parameters such us gold price, tailing grade and capital costs. The results show that it is technically feasible treat these gold tailings by heap leaching with gold extractions over 70 %. It is also economically feasible for gold grades higher than 0.5 g/t and gold prices over 350 US/oz.

INTRODUCTION The term, chelate, from the Greek for 'claw,' has its origin in the pincer-like representation of more than one atom of a single ligand bonded to the same metal atom, forming a ring-like structure. Depending on how many attachments exist on the sphere of coordination around the metal ion, ligands are referred to as bidentate, tridentate, tetradentate, pentadentate and hexadentate According to Calvin and Martell (1952) and Somasundaran and Nagaraj (1984), chelating agents must contain suitable functional groups, and their location within the ligand molecule must enable ring formation that is sterically possible. Typical structures that meet these requirements have been given by Fuerstenau and Herrera-Urbina (1988) and are listed in Figure 1. As noted, the functional groups of these reagents contain electron donor atoms such as oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur. Basic groups, such as amino (-NH,), are those that contain an atom with a lone pair of electrons. Acid groups are those, such as carboxylic (-COOH) which lose a hydrogen ion and coordinate with the metal atom. Examples of each of these types chelating reagents are given in Tables 1-4. The specificity of chelating agents for various metal ions has long been known and was utilized early in the search for new flotation collectors. In 1927, Vivian used ammonium nitrosophenylhydroxylamine as a collector for cassiterite. Holman (1929) tested dimethylglyoxime as a collector for nickel oxide. He also suggested taurin as a collector for oxidized lead ores. DeWitt and von Batchelder (1939) suggested the use of oximes as flotation collectors. Gutzeit (1946) conducted an extensive investigation on the use of chelating agents as collectors and as depressants for gangue minerals. The subject of this discussion is timely. The U.S. phosphate industry is suffering the throes of depression. It's plight is a matter of widespread concern. The future role of the U.S. industry in world markets is of particular interest. If we should prognosticate phosphate supply-demand on the basis of recent history, we would face a puzzling choice of scenario. In 1980, perhaps the best year ever for U.S. phosphate, 54.6 million metric tons of phosphate rock entered the market place. Of this, more than half was exported -- divided almost equally - as rock or phosphate fertilizer. During the last half of 1981 the situation had begun to change.
