The term "tender tundra" is a myth---a well-developed myth, but contrary to the fact. Any area that supports herbivores must have a plant base to supply food, In Alaska, herds of caribou migrate and live north of the Arctic Circle. And, if there is enough growth in the moss and lichens and arctic grass to support a caribou herd, the "tender tundra" can heal after it has been disturbed by mining. Another myth is that Alaska is an ice box. Actually, many areas In the state---particularly the Interior---have a high agricultural potential. Nevertheless, the fact remains: whether it is reclaimed by advancing the productivity from forest to agriculture or is allowed to remain a wild-life habitat, Alaskan land will revegetate. Reseeding speeds reclamation, but left to nature, native species will reclaim the land whether it was disturbed by forest fires, roads, villages, or mining. In fact, it is impossible to find many of the old gold mining camps.

Exploration for ore deposits in southeastern Missouri in the 1950's resulted in the important discovery of lead, zinc, copper and silver in 1955. Further discoveries in the area led to the naming of the Viburnum trend. It has sometimes been referred to as the "New Lead belt" to distinguish it from older lead-producing areas to the east. As presently developed, the "trend" is 35 miles long, running north and south about 50 miles west of the Lead belt. Galena (lead) is the principal ore mined, with lesser quantities of sphalerite (zinc), chalcopyrite (copper) and silver recovered as economic by-products. The ore body is as much as 140 feet thick and 1,200 feet wide, and is found in the Bonneterre Dolomite (Upper Cambrian) at depths ranging from 700 to 1,200 feet. Since its discovery many companies have engaged in exploration and several major companies have developed new mines and constructed mills and a smelter in the area. The first mine in the Viburnum trend came on stream in 1960, but as more mines came on stream and others reached capacity, lead production increased to the point that the Southeast Missouri Lead district produced 432,576 tons of lead in 1970 to become the world's largest lead-producing region (Missouri Geological Survey and Water Resources, 1971). The Viburnum trend area with its rolling, heavily forested hills and numerous clear running streams is in the Clark National Forest of the Missouri Ozarks. Until the recent development of its mineral resources, the area was sparsely populated and nearly unmarked by the activities of man. Metallurgical evaluation of autogenous grinding of Anaconda's Berkeley Pit ores indicated that tonnage throughput increases, at a finer flotation feed size, were possible by converting autogenaus mills to steel ball mills. In addition, initial test work showed that the improved grind resulted in slight recovery gains in subsequent flotation processing.

In general, it cannot be assumed that the strength of coal pillars remains constant over long time periods. Field observations indicate that a coal seam, especially when it contains a parting layer, deteriorates over time, reducing load-bearing capacity of the pillars. This paper discusses a unique approach to determine the time dependent strength of coal pillars in the field. Three coal pillars that were developed 5, 15 and 50 years ago were chosen for the study. Holes were drilled in coal and parting layers in each pillar and the strength profiles were determined for each hole using the Borehole Penetrometer. The strength data were treated statistically to establish time dependent strength equations for different layers. The results can be used to help estimate the loss of pillar capacity over time.

Machine breakdowns and maintenance delays are large contributors to lost production and increased operating costs in the mining industry. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating the applications of expert system technology to diagnostic and predictive maintenance tor mining equipment. This will help increase mining productivity and decrease operating costs, by reducing the frequency of equipment failures and repair times. The Bureau has begun this effort by applying expert system techniques to the diagnosis of hydraulic system problems on a continuous mining machine. This paper discusses the development of the hydraulic diagnostic expert system.

The mining industry is one of the foundations of modern society, providing not only the raw materials needed to maintain a contemporary lifestyle, but also serving as a basis for the development of future technologies. From the most basic components of an appliance to the materials needed to design an electric car or a space rocket, each raw material has gone through a painstaking procedure of extraction and processing, and ways to make this process more efficient will be of great help to meet an ever-increasing demand for minerals. One of the biggest challenges when extracting mineral resources is to measure the variability of the mineral body prior to processing. Comminution is the most power-demanding stage, and the lack of geometallurgical testing, often for financial reasons, may result in an inefficient operation. The Geopyörä Rock Breakage test was developed with the objective of making mineral variability data more accessible by providing both standard comminution parameters and rock mechanical properties at low cost, and with a modest sample size, allowing a larger number of samples to be tested to reduce uncertainties and assure productivity. The objective of this paper is to present the results of an extensive validation of this new rock breakage method against two of the main tests currently in use, namely the SMC® and Bond ball mill work index tests. More than 100 samples have been tested and the results compared, showing that the new method can accurately estimate the parameters of the traditional tests. This confirms that the new test is a reliable tool for comminution and geometallurgical tests.

Although safety and skills training has long been recognized as an essential element for reducing injuries and improving productivity, the research literature lacks definitive reports documenting the specific value of such training. The training literature presents a variety of testimonials as to the "benefits of training," but lacks data that specifically tie that training to the performance of the worker.

A computer package has been developed which is capable of evaluating alternative production schedules (long and short range) of an open pit mine once the ultimate pit limits have been defined. The model user can choose the best alternative according to cash flow considerations and the particular mining conditions. The package involves a combination of simulation for long range production scheduling and linear programming for short range scheduling. The simulation model based on an iterative technique, maximizes the profits within each long scheduling period (eg. year or sixth month period), and at the same time defers stripping as long as possible. A minimum exposed ore quantity is kept at the beginning of each mining period. The final long range schedule satisfies a set of constraints for each period, mainly ore quality and quantity constraints for ore and waste. An interactive smoothing procedure at the end of each period results in a schedule that is feasible in terms of mining practice. Finally a cash flow analysis model carries out cash flow calculations so that the user can select the best alternative. The linear programming model, based on a certain number of shovel regions, defined interactively by the model user, calculates the optimum production schedule for each short period under consideration, so that a set of constraints is satisfied.

Some of the most difficult coal mine roof in the U.S. can be found in the Illinois Basin. Factors contributing to the high roof fall rate include: weak moisture-sensitive roof rock, high horizontal stress, and limited longwall mining. The depth of cover ranges from 90-1,000 ft and roof damage from horizontal stress can be severe. Moisture sensitive-roof rock is common above the Springfield-Harrisburg Herrin #5 and #6 seams in the Illinois Basin, and contributes to roof skin deterioration. The roof fall rate increases significantly in the humid summer months. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has shown, using lab and field studies, that highly moisture-sensitive roof rock can be directly correlated to poor roof conditions. Controlling the skin is the key to reducing rock fall injuries, and roof screening is, by far, the best remedy. Illinois Basin coal operators have been successful in reducing the number of rock fall injuries in recent years. NIOSH has documented best practices for screen installation which has resulted in safe, efficient operations. Other solutions to skin failure include: the use of denser five bolts per row patterns to reduce spans between bolts, systematic supplemental support in intersections, straps and large pans protecting operators, and air conditioning to remove moisture from the intake air.

A proven high grade reserve of gold mineralization located in Mexico is evaluated to determine which gold recovery process is best suited for this deposit. The processes evaluated are; Heap leaching, Vat leaching and a CIP circuit. All qualify as viable options, however each one presents a different economic picture which is impacted substantially by the financial constraints of the project. Taking this into consideration the most economic process was selected.

Watertightness is of central importance in hydraulic and underground structures but has always been associated with a risk, as demonstrated by the very high impact that water inflows have on the damage of linings and infrastructure (Howard, 1991; Sandrone and Labiouse, 2011). Concrete is vulnerable to groundwater and chemical contaminants in the soil. These can leach into the pores and cracks of the concrete and degrade its integrity, causing spalling and corroding the reinforcing steel. Moisture migrating into the building can also degrade structural elements over time and lead to mold and other hazards to occupants’ health. In this connection, the demands placed on the setup and detailed design of the seal depending on the negative influence by water on the one hand and on the other hand on the function of a construction in view to its watertightness classification. Thus, the reliable functioning of a seal is of particular significance in the case of traffic tunnels, which are not easily accessible for all subsequent repairs after the construction in seepage water and especially when located in a pressure water zone (risk–cost assessment). Requirements for the long-term efficiency and quality of underground structures have increased in recent decades. Today, the standard lifetime requirement for an underground infrastructure project is 100 to 120 years and, in some cases, even higher. This calls for high increased attention to the durability of the whole structure and of each individual element. Standards, which started as application guidelines given by the manufacturers, are available in the market since the 1980s and are constantly adapted to the current developments in various technical committees. Differentiations are made between: Manufactures application guidelines, case studies or published articles Test standards for the laboratory to guideline the testing procedures (air temperature, type of test equipment, dimensions, test speed, test duration, concentration, type of liquids, monitoring, tolerances, interpretation of results, documentation, etc.), developed by committees based on material and laboratory experts Application standards, which include test standards but also the related minimum performance requirements (values) for material, processing, and quality assurance (practical tolerances), developed by committees based on a wide range of experts (e.g., designers, construction companies, applicators, manufactures, owners, test institutes, quality engineers) and therefore also based on a wide field of experience, different views and up-dated case studies. Seamounts, submarine banks, volcanoes and undercurrent channels are prominent geomorphic features that have become an important target for minerals research and exploration with the goal of future exploitation. Polymetallic ferromanganese deposits are common types of mineralization on these settings. Co-rich ferromanganese crusts are important as potential resources of Mn and Co, but also Ti, Ni, Tl, REEs, PGEs, and other metals. Many seamounts and channels along the Atlantic Spanish continental margin are known to hold mineral deposits but are poorly studied. This work presents and briefly describes the most recent activities of the Spanish Geological Survey (IGME) on exploration and investigation of ferromanganese deposits along the Atlantic Spanish continental margin. Different submarine areas from the northwestern margin of the Iberian Peninsula to the west off Canary Islands have been surveyed by geophysical, sampling and underwater observations from 89 to 4000 m water depth. The mineral deposits cover a large diversity of submarine geological and geomorphical features: mud volcanoes and diapirs related to hydrocarbon seeps, seamounts associated with hot spot volcanism, hydrothermal vents in active magmatic volcanoes, structural basement highs and banks or contourite channels. Considering the collected dataset, we present the preliminary results of the study of these mineral deposits, including ferromanganese nodules and crusts and phosphate pavements and nodules, which can be considered as potential sources of raw materials.

"The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of reduction temperature, reduction time and binary basicity on the size of metallic iron particles in coal-based reduction products of an oolitic iron ore. The particle size distribution behavior (i.e., cumulative passing percentage and mean size of metallic iron particles) during reduction was investigated in detail. Results showed that the particle size distribution of metallic iron particles was strongly influenced by reduction temperature, reduction time and binary basicity. The cumulative passing percentage and mean size significantly increased with reduction temperature and time in the entire range of the experiments. All curves of cumulative passing percentage versus particle size under different conditions demonstrated a similar trend (continuous increase). The size distribution parameters and mean size slightly increased with increasing binary basicity and significantly decreased when the binary basicity exceeded 1.0. The size of metallic iron particles could be controlled by adjusting the reduction conditions during coal-based reduction.IntroductionThe increasing demand for iron ore coupled with diminishing high-grade iron ore reserves has resulted in the urgent need for innovative technologies in order to use refractory iron ores. Oolitic iron ore is a typical refractory iron ore with tremendous abundance globally. Based on published literature, oolitic iron ore reserves are approximately 140 million tons in Europe, 10 billion tons in China and 66 million tons in Pakistan (Kazmi and Abbas, 2001; Wu et al., 2011; Yu and Qi, 2011; Sun et al., 2013a). Therefore, the efficient exploration and use of oolitic iron ore resources can play a significant role in easing the mineral resource crisis in the iron and steel industry. However, oolitic iron ore cannot be effectively upgraded by traditional beneficiation methods due to its mineralogical characteristics (e.g., low grade of iron, poor liberation of iron minerals and high phosphorus content) (Li et al., 2011b; Sun et al., 2013b).Researchers recently proposed coal-based reduction followed by magnetic separation to recover iron from refractory iron ores (especially oolitic iron ore) and a certain degree of breakthrough was achieved in both theory and practice. In this technology, iron minerals in the ore are directly reduced by coal to metallic iron, which grows into particles of different sizes. After comminution and liberation, metallic iron is concentrated by magnetic separation (Srivastava and Kawatra, 2009; Sun et al., 2013a; Li et al., 2011b; Sun et al., 2013b; Li et al., 2011c; Gao et al., 2013). Sun et al. and Gao et al. used this technology to examine the recovery of iron from oolitic and Bayan Obo iron ores, respectively (Sun et al., 2013a; Li et al., 2011b; Li et al., 2011c). Metallic iron powder with more than 90% iron content was obtained as the final product, which could be used directly in steel production."

Until recently, the volumes delivered and unloaded from heap-leaching pads have been estimated by manual methods at Wharf Resources' South Dakota operation. In August 1989, the Engineering Department acquired the MINE-SURVEY software developed by GEM COM Services, Inc. of Vancouver, Canada, as part of a mine planning/grade control software package. The implementation of MINE-SURVEY for pad control resulted in a cost-effective tool to provide accurate and prompt estimates of ore delivered or unloaded from the pads. Volumes can be calculated in a matter of minutes as opposed to hours or days. Another benefit is the ease of comparison of as-build and designed volumes, plotting cross-section in any orientation, importing into AUTOCAD, validation of ore densities and truck factors. This paper describes the application of the MINE-SURVEY systems in heap leaching pad volumetrics.

The problem of pollution of water by mine drainage is at least as old as the mining industry itself. However, research on the formation, composition, treatment, and abatement of mine water is a relatively recent historical event. At Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., acid mine drainage control has been an important area of work since 1944, at which time BCR began sponsorship of research at West Virginia University. The work at West Virginia University involved a detailed study of the acid mine drainage problem and led to the identification of iron oxidizing bacteria as important factors in the formation of acid mine water. The results of this research were summarized in 1954 by Temple and Koehler (1) who concluded that "no practical solution for the problem" of controlling acid mine drainage is yet known.?

Various types of commercial ion exchange resins were evaluated with respect to their ability to extract gold from cyanide leach solutions. Large differences were found among the various resins in terms of selectivity and gold loading. The hydrophi­licity and the charge density appear to be the main factors that determine the resin characteristics. Polystyrene weak-base resins, such as Dowex MWA-1, exhibited the best all-round performance.

Spent potliners (SPL) were declared hazardous waste under RCRA (K088) in July, 1990. The glass formation characteristics of the SPL was studied. The SPL glassy matrix were analyzed using X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy. Results showed that SPL can be fixed in a glassy matrix with the addition of sand and limestone. The optimum amounts of additives were determined for obtaining the best glass formation characteristics.

One of the prime examples of the versatility of the MARCONAFLO system, which is a body of technology comprising the means to handle, store, load, transport, discharge and reclaim mineral commodities in slurry form, is the direct application of this process to leaching ores. The initial approach was to provide a much improved materials handling system for the transport of copper ores; however, an extensive development program, inclusive of prototype and pilot plant tests, has established that a new leaching concept is possible with this system. Data are presented from the leaching operation of a 25 TPD pilot plant utilizing a copper-oxide ore, mainly chrysocolla. This pilot plant was designed to incorporate true countercurrent flow where the ore is actually in motion, as contrary to vat leaching operations, and the ore being successfully leached is fine crushed ore (3/8-inch x o), contrary to agitation leach circuits. Extractions in excess of 85% of the soluble values are common with only 15 hours of retention time in the MARCONAFLO leaching system.

The freezing and subsequent solidifying of unstable, weak (sands, silts and clays) and/or wet soil to form a desired-shape frozen barrier around a construction area are possibly the main features of the freezing method for shaft sinking. The barrier, along with strengthening the soil, provides a dry environment to ensure sustainable subsurface construction work before placing a permanent lining. The freezing method requires the installation of freezing pipes in boreholes around the construction area and the circulation of chilled salt water through these pipes and has long been a proven technique for dry shaft sinking through unstable and water-bearing seam around the world. As removing heat from the ground is the main feature of the method, an efficient thermal design of the freezing process is mandatory to ensure success of the shaft sinking operation. This applies to both the sustainability and economy of the intended structure. The design presented in this paper is aimed at figuring out the heat-removing ability and operating time of the refrigerative equipment using some simple formulae. The authors adopted a theoretical approach to determine the quantity of heat to be removed from the ground. The amount of energy for the equipment was found to be greater than that for freezing, which proved the validity of the design. The active freezing period was calculated to be 121 days. The authors followed the structural design of the freezing process they proposed in their previous work (Farazi and Quamruzzaman, 2013). Though the first coal seam in the coalfield was encountered at a depth of approximately 352 m in the subsurface, the target depth for cooling and freezing was decided to be 162 m. The formation demands extra care to nullify its risk of the temporary structure collapsing and water rushing in (Farazi et al., 2012). Discussion on the determination of refrigerative equipment parameters was excluded from the scope of this work.
