Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a serious environmental problem in mining activities. Prediction is the first step for evaluate the potential of acid generation and there are some possible methods to estimate it. They are described as static tests, which examine the balance between acid producing and acid consuming materials, and kinetic tests, which attempt to predict drainage quality over time. Static methods are very simple and give a qualitative classification of the ores based on their potential to generate acid drainage. The characterization of ores to determine their acid producing potential is vital for the prevention of long term environmental liabilities. Laboratory tests were conducted under different methodologies to predict the acid producing potential of sulphide overburden, ore materials and tailings from a deposit of copper ore.

The principle oxide minerals of molybdenum are wulfenite (PbMoO4), ferrimolybdite (Fe2(MOO 4)3.nH2O), powellite (CaMoO4), and ilsemannite (Mo304). Wulfenite is found in Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, California, and Montana. It is also found in the states of Sonora and Chihuahua, Mexico. Prior to 1915 wulfenite ores were the primary source of molybdenum. The solubility of wulfenite in hot sodium sulfide was first noted by Bonardi(1) during attempts to sulfidize wulfenite material prior to flotation. He identified lead sulfide and soluble sodium molybdate as reaction products. Bacon (2) sulfidized wulfenite in preparation for flotation and by X-ray analysis found the reaction product to be lead sulfide. Holmes(3) made an extensive investigation of the extraction of molybdenum from wulfenite concentrates by leaching. Nearly 100% molybdenum extraction was possible from -100 mesh samples leached for 15 min with 10% sodium sulfide solution at room temperature. Molybdenum extraction from -100 mesh samples after leaching 30 min at a temperature of 45°C using 2, 4, and 6% sodium sulfide was about 32, 79, and 98% respectively. The extraction showed little sensitivity to time, temperature, or particle size using 10" sodium sulfide solution.

Gold mine effluents are often characterized by a high concentration of copper, ammonia and cyanide derivatives (mostly cyanates and thiocyanates). While non-acutely toxic to birds, this water can be acutely toxic to fishes and invertebrates. In many jurisdictions, the effluent requires further treatment in order to pass a mandatory requirement to be non-lethal to species like the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) or Daphnia magna. Using actual mine water, it has been demonstrated that aerated moving bed biofilm reactors will biodegrade the ammonia, cyanides, cyanates and thiocyanates, thereby removing the toxicity associated with these components. By removing copper by precipitation the water can be made to pass acute toxicity tests. Tests have demonstrated that the process is stable between 4 and 25 C, with no significant changes in the treated water composition. Once the biomass is acclimatized, the process is resistant to upsets and requires very little inputs except for phosphorus and air. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that an anoxic reactor can be added downstream of the aerated reactors to remove nitrates if required.

Calcium-based scale precipitation is a common problem in mill reclaim waters. An accumulation of these adherent deposits can result in a rapid reduction in water flow, loss of pump efficiency and eventual interruption in ore production. Heap leach applications can also experience the added problems of plugged sprinkler heads, blinded leach pads and fouled carbon columns when scale control is not maintained. The primary cause of scaling in precious metal recovery is the relative insolubility of calcium carbonate. The presence of the calcium ion and bicarbonate alkalinity is common in almost every water source. If the temperature or pH of the water is allowed to increase, the bicarbonate breaks down to carbonate and combines with calcium by the following reaction: Ca +2 +2HCO3 ? CaCO3 + H2 + CO2

The leaching behavior of rhenium in ammonium iodide solutions with iodine as oxidant has been studied. Experiments were carried out in an autoclave. The effect of stirring speed, temperature, pH of the solution, iodine and iodide concentrations on the dissolution of rhenium was investigated. It was found that high temperature and high pH of the solutions were essential for the efficient leaching of rhenium. The dissolution rate was found to be dependent upon the concentration of iodine and iodide. It was concluded that the dissolution of rhenium under the conditions studied was controlled by mass transfer of iodine with an apparent activation energy of 15.77 kJ/mole.

Vermiculite is the mineralogical name generally applied to a group of hydrated, trioctahedral ferromagnesian aluminum platty or micaceous silicate minerals. In microscopic particles the mineral as mineral is differentiated from montmorillonite by a higher Si:AI ratio of approximately 3:l and a higher layer charge and higher cation exchange capacities. Commercial vermiculite, the vermiculite which is mined, beneficiated, and discussed in this chapter, is an important industrial mineral which is formed by the alteration of macroscopic particles of biotite and iron-bearing phlogopite. In natural form it has the size and shape of mica, while possessing the ion exchangeable properties of zeolites and some clays. Within the internal structure of vermiculite lie water molecules, which when rapidly heated to high temperature, transform into steam causing the vermiculite particles to increase in volume. This process of thermal exfoliation produces a lightweight product which finds use in various construction products, agriculture, horticulture, and other industrial applications. In exfoliated form it has the low density and biological inertness of expanded perlite, while maintaining a chemically active surface. Most of the uses of vermiculite are for the thermally exfoliated material. In addition, the cation exchange potential of vermiculite and its layer-silicate structure are properties which can be used as the basis for numerous products including intumescent coatings and gaskets, inorganic films, and the treatment of nuclear and other toxic waste. When chemically and physically modified, it possesses some properties common to organoclays and synthetic compounds. In high purity concentrates and manufactured products, these properties can be altered and optimized in applications to produce superior performance. GEOLOGY Mineralogy Vermiculite was first described as a mineral by Thomas H. Webb in 1824. Webb believed vermiculite to be a variety of talc and described its diagnostic property of thermal exfoliation thusly: "If subjected to the flame of a blowpipe, or that of a common lamp, it expands and shoots out into a variety of fanciful forms, resembling most generally small worms having the vermicular motion exact." Observing that with one exception, all commercial vermiculite has formed by the alteration of iron-bearing phlogopite, a simple definition of vermiculite might be the alteration product of trioctahedral micas, macroscopic particles of which display marked exfoliation when heated rapidly to temperatures above 374°C (the critical temperature of water). The first vermiculite described was found near Worcester, MA, but it was later pointed out by Brush (1866) that vermiculite had been known for some time in Japan as a children's novelty. Because the techniques for mineral analysis were somewhat primitive com- pared to those routinely available today, and because the structure and crystal chemistry of the micas and related minerals were not widely understood, the early literature generated at least 20 "new" minerals which were nothing more than variations in the color and chemistry displayed by vermiculite. Trade names such as Dugarlite, Mandolitem, Strong-LiteTM, and Zonolitem are sometimes used to denote commercial vermiculite, thermally exfoliated vermiculite and their products. Vermiculite particles resemble mica and vary in color from colorless through tan and green to black, depending on the chemical composition. Most physical and optical properties are close to those of biotite, with perfect basal cleavage, hardness between 1.5 and 2.5 Mohs, and specific gravity between 2.2 to 2.8. Fine-sized particles will feel talcose, especially when wet. However, for commercial vermiculite the diagnostic test is that of thermal exfoliation. Vermiculite can display a wide range of compositions, depending on the composition of the original mica and the change of chemistry during weathering and ion exchange. Chemical data for some commercial vermiculites are given in [Table 1]. There are numerous analyses for vermiculite given in the literature, and the analyses of vermiculites from commercial deposits will fall within the range indicated by the average analysis in the table. Many analyses separate the adsorbed water (H2OP) from crystalline water and water as hydroxyl (H20+). The basis of separation of adsorbed water is generally considered to be 100°C. However, hydrate water within the vermiculite interlayer begins to be lost at 75°C and lower. Therefore, measured water content and loss on ignition are combined in the table as H20[total].

"THE CHALLENGE The 14km long, Arlbergtunnel, closed for public traffic during summer 2015, receiving a comprehensive and substantial renovation from 2015 to 2017. The main works discussed here, carried out during 2015, comprise 37 drill and blast SEM/NATM emergency escape tunnels from road level to the ventilation duct plenum have to be constructed as well as eight additional lay-by niches and three transformer tunnels. This presentation comprises the construction ventilation design, designed according to national regulations, suitable for 150 employees working 24/7 simultaneously at more than 40 single working sites lined up along the tunnel. The ventilation-system chosen was utilising two existing shafts for intake/discharge and a cross passage to surface, to handle a total fan power of 1.600kW. DESCRIPTION OF RENOVATION WORKS Linking Tyrol and Vorarlberg, two Federal States of Austria, the Arlbergtunnel is a single tube two-way road tunnel with vent duct plenum, constructed in the mid-1970s. According to latest EU legislation, additional escape exits have become obligatory. The existing seven cross passage links to the adjacent Arlberg Railway Tunnel, with average spacing of about 1.500m constructed in 2007, an additional upgrade to shorter escape spaces of approx. 400m was now required to comply with the updated legislation. Additional transformer tunnels, lay-by niches and small niches for emergency maintenance use, cleaning and other purposes, as well as a the installation of a new fire main in the invert, coupled with the simultaneous replacement of virtually the entire power and signaling cables, generated several dozen small and large single sites distributed along the 14km of tunnel.Purpose of the 37 walkable emergency escape tunnels is to reach the “upper deck” of the Arlbergtunnel, the vent duct plenum. These have an 180deg curve in plan, inclined at 10% and approx. 60m (65yd) long tunnels, excavated using drill and blast method starting from road level and working upwards to the level of an “intermediate soffit”, the vent duct plenum in the crown of the tunnel. The vent duct plenum is separated into a fresh air part and an exhaust air part, shown in Figure 1. The escape tunnels end with a pressure door in the fresh air section of the ventilation duct plenum. From there illuminated signs show the shortest escape route to the safe area between the road tunnel and the railway tunnel, as shown in Figure 2."

Bleeder entries are critically important to longwall mining for the moving of supplies and miners as well as the dilution of mine air contaminants and must stay open for many years. In this study, standing supports in moderate cover bleeder entries were observed, numerically modeled and instrumented by researchers at the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The measurements of the installed borehole pressure cells (BPCs), standing support load cells and convergence meters, and roof extensometers are presented in addition to the numerical modeling results and visual observations made by the NIOSH researchers in the bleeder entries. The results include the effects of multiple panels being extracted in close proximity to the instrumented site as well as over one and a half years of aging. As expected, standing supports closer to the longwall gob showed the greatest load and convergence. The roof sag appeared generally independent of the proximity to the longwall gob. The BPC readings were driven by both the proximity to the gob and the depth into the pillar. The results of this study demonstrated that the entry roof can respond independently of the pillar and standing support loading. In addition, the rear abutment stress experienced by this bleeder entry design was minimal. The closer the mine development, pillar or supports are to the gob, the greater the applied load due to rear abutment stress.

Extraction of valuable resources from complex orebodies will become more common. This is obvious for two reasons. First, the cleaner and more readily processed ores have continually been depleted through centuries of mining. Second, new technologies have evolved for effectively handling complex ores. One of these new processes has been in place at Sunshine since 1984. Based on sulfuric acid oxygen pressure leaching with nitric acid as an oxidizer, this patented technology allows silver and copper to be efficiently recovered from a complex sulfide concentrate. As efficient as it is, this process represents novel technology found nowhere else on an industrial scale. As such, a research program was undertaken in 1989 to optimize this leach process and to better understand it. From this study, several potential plant improvements were found and recommended. As a result, two of these options, nitric acid replacement by sodium nitrite and concentrate regrind are now used in day to day operation at Sunshine. Patenting of these changes was recently accomplished (1). Thus, the development, perceived mechanisms, plant integration and potential applicability of this technology will be covered in this paper.

A parametric study was conducted to establish the optimum operating conditions for the column flotation of fine coal. The parameters examined in this investigation included collector and frother dosages, feed solids content, and the volumetric flow rates of feed slurry, air and wash water. Despite the wide range of conditions studied the experimental data were found to fall along single grade-recovery curves, just below the maximum separation predicted by the release analysis technique. The deviation of the parametric test data from the release curve was attributed to the nonselective entrainment of mineral matter associated with poor froth washing. The operating point on the characteristic recovery-grade curve was found to be primarily determined by feed rate and aeration rate.

In late 1971, the Sun Company, then known as Sun Oil Company, acquired a large surface mineable federal coal lease with the thought that those coal measures within its boundaries would provide a future feedstock of either coal or coal liquification. Our Cordero lease was one of the last Federal coal leases let before the recent decade long leasing moratorium. Because of the tremendous demand for compliance steam coal for the electric power industry, a decision was made to develop the property to serve that market. In 1974, Sunoco Energy Development Company (SUNEDCO), the non- oil and gas energy unit of the Sun Company, began engineering studies for development of the lease. The mine was originally designed at a 12.0 million ton per year capacity. The Cordero Mining Company was formed to mine and operate the property. Construction of the facilities adjacent to the lease began in January 1975. Due to the Sierra Club versus Department of Interior Secretary L. B. Morton suit, work within the lease was delayed until mid-1976 when pre-stripping of the overburden began.

Phelps Dodge’s Candelaria copper-gold mine is located 20 km (12miles) south of Copiapó in northern Chile’s Atacama province (Region III) (Fig. 1). The Candelaria Mine is about 800 km (500miles) north of Santiago and 75 km (47 miles) east of the Pacific Ocean. Its elevation is 600 m (1,970 ft) above sea level. The Copiapó River Valley is 6 km (4 miles) northeast of the mine site. It is the only major source of water in this arid region. The average rainfall is 14mm/a (0.5 in./year). During 1995, the mine produced 521.4 kt (574,800 st) of copper concentrate containing 150 kt (165,000 st) of salable copper and 3 t (98,800 oz) of gold. The 1995 unit cash cost was less than 50 cents/lb of copper. This makes Candelaria one the world’s lowest cost copper producers.

Lack of visibility from large, open-pit haulage truck cabs has become a serious safety problem. Anaconda conducted a research program to develop a low cost system to alert haulage truck operators to small vehicles present in blind areas. Several systems were developed and tested. As open-pit haulage truck size has increased, so has the size of the blind areas. Mine utility vehicles, pickup trucks, and cars are concealed within these blind areas and become safety hazards. Figure 1 shows the typical blind areas of a 136 t (150-ton) haulage truck. The areas of greatest concern are at the rear center and front right corner of the truck. In these "no visibility" areas many small vehicles have been crushed by large haulage trucks at various mine sites. In most instances, the occupants escaped the vehicle before it was destroyed. But injuries and death have occurred. In most cases, the accidents were attributed to negligence or carelessness by the small vehicle driver. The limited visibility problem still exists, though, and a solution is needed. Initial Solution The usual plane mirror on the driver's side and the convex mirror on the right front of the haulage truck allow only limited rear visibility. The typical, right side convex mirror is generally small and difficult to locate at a glance. This convex mirror also presents an image that distorts distance perception. These mirrors are of¬ten broken and immediate replacement not demanded or made. The US Bureau of Mines, in a contract with M.B. Associates, San Ramon, CA, developed an improved visibility system. It consisted of a larger, left view mirror and unique, blind area viewer. The large 230 x 690 mm (9 x 27 in.) left mirror has a small convex spot mirror near the bottom. The entire unit can be quickly replaced if broken. The large size provides a full view of driver orientation features such as the rear tire and the top of the load bed. The right 300 x 410 mm (12 x 16 in.) mirror has a convex surface and is quite rugged. The 510 mm (20 in.) spherical radius presents the operator with some distance distortion, but objects in its view are easily seen. The "blind area viewer" consists of a modified fresnel lens that allows the driver to "look around the corner." Installation of three of these lenses on the front of each haulage truck is rec¬ommended for adequate blind area coverage. This system significantly increases an operator's field of view and allows viewing of objects within about 3 m (9.8 ft of the truck. Many open-pit mines are nor mounting on smaller vehicles a long whip with a flag and lamp or both. This increases vehicle visibility to haulage truck operators. The whip is permanently attached to the mine vehicle. It can also be magnetically attached to transient vehicles. The whip system. though, is inadequate for visibility in the critical rear and right front blind areas. Alternate Solutions All of these visibility aids as¬sume an attentive driver. In addi¬tion, areas such as the rear blinc, area are not covered. Based on the inadequacy of existing visibility systems, Anaconda made a com mitment to further the truck de¬tection technology. The best ap¬proach was considered to be ar active system. It would notify the haulage truck operator that an en¬croaching vehicle is present. Sev¬eral systems were considered, in¬cluding ultrasonics and elec¬tromagnetics. For the ultrasonic system, com mercial and in-house design were looked at. Designing an( building transducers with the spe cific beam shape to match the haulage truck blind spots re¬quired a major technological breakthrough. False alarms ap¬peared difficult to prevent en¬tirely. They were caused by pass¬ing, trailing, or leading vehicles a., well as nonthreatening objects. The stable domestic supply of gallium, indium, and germanium has been identified as a critical need for the United States. Electric arc furnace dusts, processed to recover zinc, produce a residue that could be a potential source of these critical materials. An industrial zinc leach residue was characterized to determine its particle size, chemical composition, and predominant mineral phases. Heated, atmospheric, agitated leaching using sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid was examined to determine the extractions of gallium, indium, and germanium as a function of concentration and temperature. Extractions of gallium were found to be similar to iron in all experiments. The maximum percentage of Ga, Ge, and In leached into solution were 71%, 63%, and 48%, respectively.

A significant news item appearing in a coal mining journal in November 1969 stated simply that a Caterpillar D-333-CNA engine had received Bureau of Mines Schedule 31 approval. This item occurring at the time a new mining property in Martin County of East Kentucky was being prospected and prepared for mining, resulted in the manage-ment of Martin County Coal Corporation asking the question, "Why not use diesel equipment in our new operation?" Martin County Coal Corporation is part of the A. T. Massey Coal Company, Incorporated organization. The property being developed is on a 17,500 acre leasehold obtained from Pocahontas Land Corporation and lies in the Wolf Creek area of Martin County. The Norfolk and Western Railway Company built a 24-mile railroad into this undeveloped section of Kentucky to tap a huge reserve of steam coal. Duke Power Company is the customer who will take all of the production from Martin County Coal Corporation mines which ultimately is projected to be 2,000,000 tons annually. Four coal seams, all above drainage, are included in the lease. The Middle Coalburg and Stockton are being deep mined now and it is in those mines that the diesel haulage equipment was introduced. This paper will endeavor to trace the steps loading to the introduction of the first diesel-powered Wagner Mining Equipment Company ScoopTram in a coal mine in America. It will further elaborate on the features which make this unit a very versatile and useful utility unit as well as the safety features which are incorporated in the machine. Cu-As feedstocks are among the most problematic copper sources that have been avoided over the past years. The high arsenic content of such ores/concentrates combined with their refractory nature have directed the metallurgical industry towards developing efficient technologies for the treatment of high-arsenic copper ores/concentrates. As the most important member of Cu-As-S mineral system, enargite (Cu3AsS4) is frequently encountered in some of the important copper deposits. Several hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical processes have been examined for the treatment of enargite concentrates, but currently, no commercial operation exists. In an effort to develop an original processing option, an acid bake-leach process has been identified and applied to an enargite concentrate containing ~67% enargite, ~27% pyrite (FeS2), ~3% chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), ~6% sphalerite (ZnS) and <1% galena (PbS). Sulfuric acid baking of this concentrate resulted in the transformation of the concentrate to S8, As2O3, HFe(SO4)2?4H2O, PbSO4 and Cu0.47Fe0.53SO4?H2O, all of which (except elemental sulfur and PbSO4) dissolved during the water leaching step. More than 87% Cu and 64% As were leached when the concentrate was baked at 200°C over 7 h with a sulfuric acid to concentrate weight ratio of 1.6. Less than 1% As was lost to the gas phase. Upon water leaching, copper and arsenic were released to the solution at a concentration ratio of about 3:1. While enargite is very reactive during the sulfuric acid baking reaction, other minerals present in the concentrate such as pyrite, galena, and sphalerite may compete to consume sulfuric acid and be converted into their corresponding sulfates at different levels. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate phase transformations during the acid bake-leach process for the treatment of an enargite concentrate, and to study the effect of sulfuric acid dosage on the extraction of Cu, Fe, and As. In this regard, the concentrate, baked concentrate, and the leach residues are characterized and a conceptual process flowsheet is described for the acid bake-leach process for the treatment of enargite concentrates.

FUNCTIONS OF RAIL HAULAGE SYSTEMS The principal application of rail haulage in under¬ground mining is in the movement of ore or coal pro¬duction from near the mining areas out to a processing plant. In some cases, such production haulage may end at a shaft pocket or slope belt conveyor transfer station, depending on the type of mine and the geo¬logical placement of the mineral being mined. Main-Line Haulage The basic reasons for choosing main-line rail haul¬age are high-tonnage production per shift and long haulage distances. The choice between rail and other systems, such as belt conveyors, is not easy and requires an integrated study of many factors: tonnage, distance, grade, product size, number of producing areas, ore reserve, safety, capital cost, operational and maintenance cost, and the mining system. Projecting a main-line rail haulage system for com¬parison with other systems requires a choice of many variables which are interrelated. The project must start with consideration of the mining system, tonnages per day, distances and grades, and loading and dumping conditions. Rail mine cars of different sizes and types are studied. High tonnage demands consideration of wider track gages. A suggested minimum for metal mines is 914.4 mm (36 in.); for coal mines, 1066.8 mm (42 in.). The choice of the train size should be governed by tonnage per shift, physical factors of loading and dumping, cycle time, and the number of trains that can be operated and safely controlled. After the size of the train is determined, the type, size, and specifi¬cations of the locomotive can be selected. The loco¬motive may be trolley, battery, or diesel; selection guides are discussed elsewhere in this chapter. The advantages of rail main-line haulage are high tonnage capacity, flexibility, reliability, safety, low operational and maintenance cost, and dual usage of the system (supply haulage, for example). The dis¬advantages are high capital investment, high installation cost, the requirement for more maintenance facilities, and restriction to certain ore reserves and mine pro¬jections. Supply Haulage Supply haulage is a basic requirement of any mine, but the type and volume of supplies vary with the type of mineral being mined, the mining methods, and the size of the mine. A mine developed for rail main¬line haulage gains supply haulage through the addition of a secondary track system to extend the main line closer to the producing areas. Additional haulage equipment, generally smaller, is also added. It is neces¬sary to design into the rail system more switch bypass points and train control systems. The track system standards demanded by rail main-line haulage con¬tribute to the reliability and efficiency of the supply haulage function, whereas a supply track system to supplement other haulage systems often suffers from poorer track and installation standards. When belt conveyors are chosen for production haulage, a rail supply haulage system is often installed rather than using rubber-tired vehicles for supply haul¬age. The conditions of the seam or ore body create these items for consideration: haulage grade of more than 6% favors rubber-tired vehicles; longer haulage distances favor rail; difficulty in maintaining a smooth roadway favors rail; and movement beyond the end of a rail system generally requires rubber-tired vehicles, making a single system rather than a dual system attractive. Although operation of a supply haulage system may be concentrated on a single shift of a multiple-shift mining operation, proper planning and supervision are required if the haulage is to be efficient. Often the newer personnel at a mine are assigned to supply haul¬age which may add to the difficulty of obtaining maxi¬mum efficiency. Supply haulage by rail offers the advantages of high reliability, lower maintenance, and high efficiency over long distances. The disadvantages are less flexibility, high installation costs, and rubber-tired vehicles for use beyond the inby end of track often required. Personnel Movement The efficient and comfortable movement of the miner to and from his work area has a significant effect on his daily output. Minimizing man-trip time also becomes more and more important as hourly wages increase. Personnel are generally moved over a rail system by one of three methods: a specialized personnel carrier to which a certain number of men who work in a certain area are assigned; a combination vehicle, used to carry personnel but also capable of being used as a light supply/utility locomotive during a working shift; and man-trip cars towed by a supply locomotive. The first and second methods are used in coal mines where long distances make speed and comfort important. The third method is more common in metal mines. Equipment Movement As mining equipment technology has advanced, many mining machines and their subcomponents have grown in size. This trend requires careful planning for adding specialized carriers to handle the movement of larger equipment. Continuous miners, longwall equipment, raise borers, and ventilation equipment are examples of machines which may be difficult to move and which require special handling. The selection of the weight, speed, and operating characteristics of supply locomotives used to move equipment is important. Larger mines may often justify a special group of loco¬motives for this application.

The use of longwall/shortwall mining systems is under increasing scrutiny by the U. S, coal industry as a means to reverse the decline in productivity. The success of these mining systems depends to a great extent upon designing the system hardware to best suit local conditions. Of particular importance in this regard is designing the various elements of the total ground support system, including face, face end, and gate road supports, to accommodate local geologic conditions. This presentation centers on the problem of selecting the face support system. The existing geologic situation can influence the selection of the face support hardware in a variety&apos; of ways. In general terms, these influences can be grouped into the following four areas: 1. The capacities required of the support unit; 2. The roof, coverage supplied by the support units; 3. The flexibility required of the support unit to meet changing geologic conditions; and 4. The required stiffness characteristics of the individual support units both vertically and horizontally. The following will center on the first area, i.e., the required d capacities of the support unit, in particular, the maximum required load density for a particular geologic situation.
