Investment decision for large mining projects imply an enormous financial risk and therefore, require a more complex risk evaluation methodology taking into account all sources of uncertainty from each process in the project value chain. Generally, the main sources of risk are those related to uncertainty on grade and other techical variables of the orebody. In this study, conditional simulation is applied to develop a risk management model to quantify and to manage financial risk associated to uncertainty on the grade of the orebody. The model was validated in case study on a real porphyry copper orebody in Chile.

Significant economic benefits can result when rock mechanics is applied within a practical framework and integrated within the other engineering functions of the mine organization. This requires management support and understanding of rock mechanics as a practical tool to help attain high standards of safety, productivity and resource recovery. For such an approach, a long-term geotechnical program is needed in most operations to build an adequate data base and to ensure that design and ground control issues are handled in a cost-effective manner. This paper presents a summary of four case studies where significant economic benefits were realized with the help of rock mechanics. Although cost savings were not computed, the economic benefits are obvious and clearly impacted the mine operations favorably.

Quartz has been of interest in occupational health for years because it can cause silicosis after prolonged exposure. New OSHA regulations (Air Contaminant; Final Rule) list perlite as a nuisance dust. They conclude that perlite is nontoxic when air-borne total particulate concentrations are 15 mg/m3 or below and when quartz content is less than 1% crystalline silica. OSHA has established an 8-hour PEL of 15 mg/m TWA for total perlite dust containing less than 1% quartz. OSHA has established a 5 mg/m3 TWA PEL for respirable perlite. These limits will protect workers from significant risk of eye, skin, or other physical irritation. This regulation is based on a Group 2A classification as a probable carcinogen in humans, at the 0.1% crystalline silica level, by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC 1987a, b). IARC found sufficient evidence for carcinogenicity of crystalline silica in animals and limited evidence in humans. Perlite is not listed as a carcinogen by OSHA or the National Toxicology Program.

Aguas Argentinas,1 a consortium managed by Lyonnaise des Eaux of France and operator of the world’s biggest privatized water supply and waste water collection system for the City of Buenos Aires, a city of 9 million people, was faced with the daunting task of providing new service to 1.6 million more people in the first five years of their 30 year concession. Aguas Argentinas elected to use the Negotiated Compressed Process - NCP - for the fast track implementation of a 15000 meter, 3,5 meter diameter tunnel, a key component of the infrastructure master plan. NCP was developed by Klohn Crippen for the $200 million international railway tunnel between Canada and the United States. The conceptual design of the project was performed by Safege Montgomery-Watson, who engaged Klohn Crippento assist with the NCP, the preparation of the tender documents, and implementation of theproject during construction. The process included the purchase by the client Aguas Argentinas of two sophisticated 4 metre diameter earth pressure balance tunnel boring machines from Herrenknecht of Germany. Construction of the tunnel is being performed by the consortium Wayss & Freytag (Germany) and Sollazzo Hnos S.A. (Argentina). The water tunnel is being built with a one pass, bolted segmented gasketed reinforced concrete liner. The purpose of this paper is to describe a transferable methodology for this innovative contracting procedure, the project organization and quality control plan for this important world class tunnel project which is designed to service one of Latin America’s largest metropolitan areas.

The Mining Foundation of the Southwest will hold its 14th annual American Mining Hall of Fame awards banquet Saturday, Dec. 7, 1996 at the Leows Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson, AZ. Each year, preceding the Arizona Conference of SME, the Mining Foundation sponsors this banquet to honor outstanding contributions by people in the mining industry. A permanent display of honoree vitae is located at the Arizona Historical Society in Tucson. Each year, one living award recipient and up to two honorees from mining’s history are chosen by the hall of fame committee and the board of governors of the Mining Foundation. In 1989, the foundation also established a medal of merit to recognize outstanding individual technical and professional contributions to the mining industry. And, in 1995, an award was created to recognize contributions made by companies and individuals in partnership with the mining industry. This year’s inductee is Richard de J. Osborne, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Asarco. He will also be the featured speaker at the banquet.

"Due to the time-consuming nature of froth testing in a laboratory environment, practical limitations require the development of a method of applying a single set of performance test data (Visintainer and Whitlock, 2012) obtained for a single froth pump at a given speed to a range of froth pump speeds and sizes, % air content and liquid viscosities. Head, efficiency and flow all vary as functions of both liquid viscosity and air content. As such, it is necessary to develop a technique that can be used to interpolate from existing test data in order to predict froth performance for pumps of various sizes running at variable speeds. Details of the technique developed in order to achieve this goal, as well as the insights gained from analysis of the resulting regressions, are discussed. Additionally, comparisons are made between the performance predictions of this test-derived method and those of the Hydraulic Institute standard for the effects of liquid viscosity on centrifugal pump performance (ANSI, 2010).IntroductionPump performance data (Visintainer and Whitlock, 2012) has been collected for a froth pump using an experimental loop outfitted with an array of pressure transducers, mass flow meters, an inverted U-loop, magnetic flow meter and an assortment of other instrumentation. Experiments were performed on pure water, water and air, pure corn syrup, and corn syrup and air. Data was obtained for % air contents of 0-30% and viscosities of 1- 15,000 cSt at eight specific valve positions (eight different flows as a percentage of best efficiency flow points) and the viscosity was changed by allowing the system temperature to increase during testing. The test pump is a 710-mm diameter impeller, GIW HVF, open shrouded, vented design that has its discharge axis oriented at 45° upward from the horizontal. The general application of memory cutting technology to shearers is improving the intelligence of the working face, but it has its limitations. It is only suitable for conditions where the environment of coal seam is changing slowly. It compensates for the cutting height by changing the fuselage attitude, and frequently adjusts the height to control the learning cutting trajectory, but due to the problems of shearer control and height adjustment accuracy, it cannot adapt to and compensate for the change of cutting height in a timely manner, resulting in poor cutting accuracy. Introduction In contrast to the general type of crushing mechanism in which the crushing surfaces alternately approach and withdraw from each other, described earlier in this section, and continuous-pressure break¬ers such as rolls and roller mills that will be described in a later chapter, impact crushers load by striking pieces of rock while in free fall and hurling them at high speed against stationary surfaces. Because the impact crusher depends for its effectiveness upon high velocity, wear is greater than in the slower-moving jaw and cone¬type wear parts, and for this reason its use is strictly limited to rela¬tively soft, friable, and sticky rocks that are characteristic of many nonmetallic mineral deposits. A few of these are phosphates, lime¬stone, barite, clay, asbestos rock, and coal. However, several examples of their use on soft lead-zinc and precious metal ores have been known. Although the use of impact crushers is expanding today into the range of ores containing as much as 15-18% silica, Taggart16 set the practical limit at 5%, and in the 1940s and 1950s several installa¬tions in the US and western Europe exceeded the limits of economical maintenance and were quickly superseded by the slower-moving, con¬ventional crushers. A rock that tends to be plastic or bouncy in a jaw or gyratory crusher when the force is applied slowly to reach ultimate strength, may become brittle with rapid loading and thus increase the effective¬ness of the applied forces. For this reason it is to be expected that as the quality of hammers, grates, plates, and cages improves with advances in steel technology, the use of high-speed crushers of this kind will increase. Terminology Modern usage differentiates between the impactor and the hammer mill, the former relying primarily on the impact of hammers (fixed or free-swinging) and secondarily upon pieces striking one another or steel surfaces; the hammer mill relies on both the centrifugal impact force of free-swinging hammers and the attrition and shear action between these hammers and well-placed grates suspended at the bot¬tom just below the hammer circle. The hammer mill, because of its grate discharge, restricts discharge of oversize rock to the grate open¬ing, while at the same time providing a trap for removal of tramp iron or other uncrushables. The impactor discharges free, so generally works with a screen to control product sizes. The question of terminology, impactor vs, hammer mill, creates difficulties because the similarities appear to outweigh the differences by far; if one were to list the similarities in order of importance and then the differences, he would be forced to conclude that they would best be dealt with as a single kind of crusher. Taggart16 gave it four names and added "as it is variously known," but it must be remembered that in 1945 the machine was nearly exclusively of the flailing-hammer type, while today the fixed-hammer rotor is also com¬mon. In this chapter the terms impactor and hammer mill will be used where they seem to apply. It is perhaps unfortunate that this terminology is being confused with rock breaking at the mine, usually with hand-held tools, e.g., the article "High-Energy Impact Rockbreaking" by Grantmyre and Hawkes, CIM Bulletin, August 1975. General Description Impact breakers, impact crushers, and hammer mills accomplish material breaking and reduction primarily through impact action of the material with fixed or free-swinging hammers revolving about a central rotor. The material to be crushed enters through an opening at the top or top side known as the "feed opening" or "hopper opening" and falls into the path of rotation (hammer circle) of the hammers. Initial breakage is accomplished in midair by collision of the dropping feed material with high-speed hammers. The second stage of breakage occurs when the pieces hit plates or breaker bars which line the crusher boxlike frame. Hammer mills rely further on a shearing and attrition action between free-swinging hammers and grid bars or grates at the crusher bottom which restrict discharge of oversize material until it is broken sufficiently to pass through the grid opening. The term hammer is used in reference to the piece which strikes the material, whether it is fixed on the rotor or free-swinging. It

Much has been written in the mining technical magazines about the caving system. Many of these articles were published in the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining Engineers prior to World War II. In recent years little has been written on mining methods or on the detailed planning always required. Block caving had primarily been used to mine deep copper ores in Africa, the United States and in Chile, although other ores had been mined by this same system. Asbestos ore had been caved in Canada, tin ore in Bolivia, molybdenum ore in Colorado, iron ore in Wyoming and Sweden, and limestone in California.

"Phosphate rock contains traces of rare earth elements (REEs) and can be a secondary source of these critical materials as large tonnages of phosphate rock are mined annually. Attention has mostly focused on the extraction of REEs from phosphogypsum, which contains more than 70 percent of the REEs reporting to phosphate concentrate, with only limited work conducted on REE extraction from sand tailings and slime even though they account for 16 percent and 15 percent, respectively, of REEs mined with phosphate matrix.In this work, phosphate flotation tailings were upgraded by gravity separation and froth flotation. Gravity separation was conducted using a laboratory shaking table, while flotation was conducted in a Denver D-12 flotation cell. The concentrated tailings were then leached by nitric acid followed by REE extraction with solvent and ion-exchange resin.The sand tailings were assayed as having 2.6 percent phosphate (P2O5 ) and 198.1 µg/g REEs. It was found that the shaking table could produce tailing concentrate assayed as having 8.6 percent P2O5 and 616 µg/g REEs but with only 20 percent REE recovery, while the froth flotation produced froth concentrate assayed as having 8.1 percent P2O5 and 368.2 µg/g REEs with 63.5 percent REE recovery. Leaching the flotation concentrate with 5.2 M (25 percent) nitric acid followed by extraction with solvent and ion-exchange resin yielded precipitates with REE contents of 0.926 and 0.314 percent, respectively, compared with 0.716 and 0.213 percent when table concentrate was used.IntroductionRare earth elements (REEs) consist of a group of 17 elements: the 15 lanthanides along with yttrium (Y) and scandium (Sc). They are rare not because of their scarcity in the Earth’s crust but because they are rarely found in economic and mineable deposits. REEs are called “seeds of technology” because of their importance to some critical technological industries such as renewable energy, hybrid cars, electronics and batteries. On average, an electric car or a hybrid car contains about 10 kg of REEs (Grasso, 2012; Radhika et al., 2011).REEs are usually categorized into light (LREE) and heavy (HREE). LREEs consist of lanthanum (La), cerium (Ce), praseodymium (Pr), neodymium (Nd), promethium (Pr), samarium (Sm), europium (Eu), gadolinium (Gd) and scandium (Sc), while HREEs consist of terbium (Tb), dysprosium (Dy), holmium (Ho), erbium (Er), thulium (Tm), ytterbium (Yb), lutetium (Lu) and yttrium (Y). About 200 minerals contain traces of REEs, but only three are considered economically significant: bastnasite, with the formula La,Ce(CO3)F; monazite, with the formula(Ce,La,Nd,Th)PO4; and xenotime, with the formulaYPO4 (Jordens, Cheng and Waters, 2013)."

There are many aspects of a grinding mill supply and installation that can result in the mill not operating as intended, resulting in unplanned shutdowns, poor reliability and headaches for all concerned. One of the largest aspects, both in criticality and physical mass, is the mill foundation; if not properly specified, designed and constructed the mill operation will be compromised. The mill foundation starts with the design specification and loading diagram supplied by the mill builder. The importance of understanding these documents and how to apply them is critical for the start of any mill project. When designing mills with a GMD the foundation must be properly modeled to ensure that all interactions of the mill and motor structures, foundation and subsurface strata behave in the intended fashion. All of the previous efforts can be laid to waste if the construction of the mill foundation is poorly handled. Mill foundations are typically the most massive concrete structure at a processing plant and can easily cause nightmares for inexperienced contactors. This paper explores some of the more important facets along the lifecycle of the grinding mill foundation.

The Copper Flat Property is located approximately 6 miles NE of the small town of Hillsboro in Sierra County, N. M. (Fig. 1). Hillsboro was the center of considerable mining activity in the late 1800's and early 1900's following the discover, of gold bearing vein deposits and later discovery of, placer gold along the east slopes of the Animas Hills. The Copper Flat orebody is a porphyry type deposit occurring in a small quartz monzonite porphyry stock that has intruded the center of a circular andesite plug (Fig. 2). The primary ore mineral is chalcopyrite. By-product values are contained in gold, silver and molybdenum.

Anenopyrite, both pure and in some cases associated with pyrite, was laboratory roasted either isothermally or at a constant heating rate, at temperatures mainly between 723 and 923 K and under environments of air, sulfur dioxide, oxygen and argon, as well as S02/02/H20/N2 mixtures. The mineralogy, arsenic contents and in some cases surface areas of the calcines were evaluated so as to provide an enhanced understanding particularly of the conditions under which the important transformations to pyrrhotite and magnetite occur. A thermodynamic analysis is also undertaken to rationalize the observations and provide some guidance for the operation of commercial roasters.

As all of us know, the "heat" is on for western coal. The need for western coal is critical if the nation is to reach the goals of Project Independence by 1985. Without the development of western coal, the goals will not be met. It's that simple! That's because 50 percent of our nation's coal reserves lie in the states of North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah. And surface mining is the key to unlocking these reserves. Of the nine states in the coal provinces, five-Wyoming, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota and Arizona-are the best examples since surface mining accounts for 88 to 100 percent of the coal mined in each of these states. Collectively, their annual production more than doubled between 1969 and 1972, rising to 35 million tons per year. And, taken individually, each state's production has more than doubled, also. Total annual production from these five key states could very well exceed 180 million tons per year by 1980-four times the 1972 production level. The biggest producer among the five is Wyoming. Wyoming's production tripled since 1969 to nearly 14 million tons in 1973. So the heat is on for western coal, especially from Wyoming. Now we come to the question of how to mine this increasingly precious mineral. What are the available methods? First, let's take a brief look at several characteristics of western coal deposits.

Strabag, in partnership with Arup, is constructing the Advance Tunnel for the Scarborough Subway Extension (ATSSE); a project by Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario (Sponsors). The 10.7 m internal diameter single bore tunnel represents a significant departure from the traditional arrangement of twin subway tunnels in North America. ATSSE is the first-time steel fibers are used to solely reinforce a tunnel of this size in Eastern Canada. This paper discusses the challenges with design and acceptance of SFRC segments and the state-of-the-art numerical models employed to check the joint performance. The advance procurement approach for TBM and PCTL’s procurement to accelerate the project schedule is also presented.

While the cost of transporting raw phosphate matrix from a pit to a processing plant via slurry pipelines is more efficient than it could be by rail cars, conventional trucks or belt conveyors, it still amounts to many millions of dollars, and in many areas there still exists much room for improvement. By taking advantage of pipeline test data on different slurries, it is possible to reduce costs by optimizing pipeline diameters, operating velocities and slurry concentrations. Better wearing, more efficient pump designs are now available which, if applied correctly, can lead to significant savings. The authors discuss what benefits are possible in relation to the electrical operating and wear maintenance costs and go into some of the factors associated with taking advantage of these benefits, identifying what they see as being practically possible.

The Work Crew Performance Model (WCPM) is a method for designing, implementing, and evaluating? performance improvement strategies for machine operators and other mining personnel. The WCPM offers a practical approach for measuring job proficiency and identifying costly behaviors. It enables interventions aimed at performance improvement, especially training, to be assessed monetarily. Two interrelated elements of the WCPM are emphasized: observational techniques for establishing performance baselines and measuring performance outcomes and cost linkages between job competencies and measures related to profitability. Inter-and intra-subject differences in performance-related behaviors of regular and incidental shuttle car operators were detected during field validation of the WCPM. Downtime data were used as outcome measures to test linkages between performance error rates and cost consequences. Use of a simulation program for analyzing continuous mining face operations showed how common shuttle car operating parameters (e.g., payload, tram rate) can be used as cost-conscious indicators of performance variability and therefore as targets for performance improvement.

The objective of this paper is to back-analyze the August 6th ,2007 collapse at the Crandall Canyon Mine in order to better understand the geometric and geo- mechanical factors which contributed to that collapse. In this work, the LaModel boundary-element program along with the best available information is used for the back- analysis. To initiate the analysis, a six step base model of the mining in he Main West area was developed. This base model included a step for each of the critical stages in the mining of this area. Next, calibrated values for the critical input parameters: rock mass stiffness, gob stiffness and coal strength, were developed and optimized based on the best available information. Finally, the model was used to simulate the final mining scenario. As a result of this back analysis , a number of conclusions can be made concerning the mine design and the August 6th collapse: 1) Overall, the area was primed for a massive pillar collapse because of the large area of equal size pillars, 2) The abutment stress from the active retreat sections and the adjacent longwall panels were significant contributors to the collapse, 3) From the modeling alone, it is not clear exactly what triggered the August collapse, although the active mining is a reasonable assumption.

The last decade has seen the use of powerful computerized Mine-Wide Monitoring (MWM) systems for detecting hazardous conditions in underground coal mines. Recently, the U.S. Bureau of Mines and Jim Walter Resources, Inc. (JWR) expanded the scope of MWM system to include ground control. Single-point extensometers were installed in each of 30 intersections along a tailgate entry. These instruments monitored the rate of roof sag, a sensitive indicator of roof instability. Data were collected by the mine's own computerized MWM system. The paper describes the successful integration of ground control instruments into MWM, the data reduction procedures, and the identification of several hazardous areas.
