The need to provide better mine roof support and control in longwall tailgate entries prompted the Bureau of mines to search for a replacement product for wood cribs. Their search isolated steel-fiber-reinforced concrete (SFC) as the most effective replacement. Through successful laboratory and underground mine tests, handmade SFC cribs proved to be a viable and more effective roof support system. However, to ensure wider usage, U. S. Steel Mining Co. initiated a joint development and evaluation program with Burrell Construction Company in order to mass produce SFC blocks of reasonable dimension, weight, and cost. Small specimens and full-size cribs were evaluated during this program to determine their compressive strength and post failure characteristics. After considerable testing and adjusting of various concrete mixtures, a final formulation for the SFC crib blocks was selected. That formulation permitted the construction of SFC cribs possessing a nominal crib strength of 3200 psi (22.1 x 106 Pa) and a nominal modulus of elasticity of 1.0 x 106 psi (6894.76 x 106 Pa). These SFC cribs can support from 3.5 to 14.5 times as much load as a wood crib, depending on the size of the wood crib being replaced. Both laboratory and limited mine tests, conducted by U. S. Steel Mining Co. have shown the SFC crib to be an economical and effective means of roof control.

Conducting full-scale fire experiments in underground mines is difficult and expensive. Sometimes, it is impossible to carry out fire tests in mines due to the danger they pose to mine workers and the underground facilities. However, understanding the potential occurrence of fires in a mine and their dynamics is critical to developing an appropriate emergency evacuation plan, fire suppression, and firefighting techniques. In this study, a numerical fire model using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with fire dynamics simulator (FDS) 6.7.6 was developed to examine the influence of tunnel bifurcation on maximum temperature beneath a tunnel ceiling. The model was validated using full-scale experimental data. The maximum ceiling gas temperature predicted using FDS and measured maximum smoke temperature during the experiment shows good agreement. The study shows that bifurcation could lower the maximum ceiling temperature of fire-induced smoke in a subsurface environment. The findings from this study apply to the broader field of ventilation and fire life safety in tunnels and other underground environments.

A proper choice is made by correctly estimating the relative importance of each of these requirements and selecting s rope which has those qualities best suited to withstand the combination of destructive forces expected under continued service. A wire rope should possess: 1. Strength sufficient to support the maximum load expected and with s proper safety factor. 2. Ability to withstand bending and to resist bending fatigue without failure of the wires. 3. Ability to withstand surface abuse such so abrasive wear, pounding, and wire scrubbing. 4. Ability to withstand abuse such as crushing and distortion.

Introduction This paper attempts to describe the characteristics of the industrial minerals segment of the minerals industry that make it different from the other segments. Also described are the trends, strengths, and shortcomings in the industrial minerals segment. This may help professionals in the minerals industry determine if there is a place for them in industrial minerals. Industry Overview It is difficult to generalize when describing the industrial minerals industry. Some products, such as cement and potash, are produced exclusively by large, well capitalized and technically sophisticated companies. Others, such as sand and gravel, are generally produced by small, family-owned companies operating on a shoestring budget. Still other products, such as feldspar, are produced by both types of companies. Not only are the companies vastly different, the products and marketing of their products are also different. Industrial mineral products are sold based on their physical characteristics (abrasives), or their chemical characteristics (trona), or both (glass sand). Marketing can be direct by the producing plant, a corporate office handling products form several plants, or through distributors. The geologic, mining, and processing skills needed can be minimal or sophisticated. There can even be large differences in the technical skills needed in two plants producing the same product. One feldspar producer may only need to mine and grind his ore, while another may use a delicate flotation process. One easy generalization is that there are industrial mineral operations in all geographic locations. A second is that industrial minerals offers more opportunities to entrepreneurs than the metals field because of the variety in the sizes and types of operations. Industry Growth Industrial minerals must be considered a mature industry. Consequently, little exciting growth can be expected. Over the past 30 years, industry sales have grown at a rate of 6.2%, compared to a 6.7% growth rate of the GNP (Kliff, 1978). A 3.8% growth rate has been forecast for the remainder of this century. The fortunes of those plants producing a product for local consumption will depend on the prosperity of the local economy. The fortunes of those plants that sell into the national market will depend on their competitiveness in their industry. Major industrial mineral products are shown in Table 1. The first three commodities account for 66% of the industrial minerals market. Typically, deposits of stone, sand and gravel, and the limestone, silica, and clay needed for cement are easy to find and mine. Role of Mining Engineers and Geologists Because a sophisticated techcical knowledge of geology or mining is not required, very few geologists and mining engineers are employed in industrial minerals. Geologists working for these companies function less as geologists than managers and executives dealing with permitting and land acquisition. Likewise, mining is done mostly by open-pit methods. It is generally supervised by an individual experienced in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment, not a mining engineer trained in rock mechanics or computer methods of mine planning. What of the geologists and mining engineers employed by the industrial minerals industry? Many gained their positions as a result of their experience dealing with the regulatory agencies that control the operations of all mines and mills. Their technical expertise in geology or mining becomes only a side benefit. An atmospheric ammoniacal thiosulphate leach system was developed to recover gold and silver from residues of the ammoniacal oxidation leaching of sulphidic copper concentrates. Extractions of 88 - 95% Au and 83 - 98% Ag were attained within 2 to 4 hours at 40 - 60°C in thiosulphate leaching of the oxidation leach residues of Manitoba chalcopyrite concentrates analyzing 24.6% Cu, 0.18 oz/ton Au and 4.26 oz/ton Ag and a complex British Columbia chalcopyrite/tetrahedrite concentrate analyzing 18.5% Cu, 0.27 oz/ton Au and 276 oz/ton Ag. Parameters affecting the Au and Ag solubilization included thiosulphate, ammonia, and cupric ion concentrations, temperature, retention time and the degree of Cu extraction and sulphide oxidation in the primary oxidation leach. The precious metals were recovered from the thiosulphate liquors by zinc dust cementation.

Another record year vas experienced by the mining industry as the value of nonfuel minerals production soared to $23.5 billion-up 15% from the previous year. Based on preliminary estimates by the Bureau of Mines, US mine output was the basis for about $225 billion worth of minerals-derived materials. Metal mining accounted for $8.5 billion, or 36%, of the total. Of the 22 metals produced in the US, 11 showed quantity increases, while 16 had value increases. Business Week's survey of 1200 companies (Mar. 17, 1980, pg. 81) revealed that 21 metals and mining companies had sales increases of 30% with earnings up 104%. Higher prices and increased demand for metals were primary factors behind the improved performance. The steel sector reported a 30% decrease in earnings for the year, but the slump was primarily the result of a $383-million loss for US Steel coupled with a 17% decrease in earnings at Inland Steel. Other firms did well in 1979, with earnings up 279% at Interlake and 269% at Kaiser Steel. Major obstacles facing the steel industry included substantial tonnages of dumped and subsidized imports, environmental expenditures, runaway inflation, and price controls. Turning to nonmetallic production, of the 49 commodities reported by the US Bureau of Mines, 29 had higher outputs and 39 had increased values. While production statistics may seem encouraging, government regulations continued to stifle industry efforts to develop needed new capacity. A case in point may be publication of the Environmental Protection Agency's simplified procedure to streamline five permit programs by consolidating them into one. The five included: hazardous waste management, national pollution discharge elimination, dredge and fill, underground injection control, and prevention of significant deterioration. The new procedure, published by EPA in the Federal Register, took 149 pages. AMC's J.A. Overton, Jr., noted that (MCJ, Nov. 1979, p. 39) to visually depict the complexity of the proposed regulations, Sell Oil Co. developed a flow chart mapping a path through one section. The chart required 10 days to map and two weeks for two draftsmen, using computerized drafting techniques, to plot the results. Overton said, "Perhaps the greatest service EPA has performed in preparing its proposal is to demonstrate again that federal regulations have become a complexity compounded by confu¬sion that culminates in a conundrum." While regulatory agencies promulgate new regulations, the lack of a cohesive government minerals policy remained a matter of significant importance to mine management. A non-fuel minerals study to provide input to the Administration for a national minerals policy program was a dismal shock, according to Rep. Jim D. Santini (D-NV). He said the first phase of the program, which was to identify industry problems, failed to come to grips with the hard decisions necessary regarding these problems, their impact, and their interrelationship. Santini said the report failed to acknowledge government's role in the process and absolved the government of any adverse influence on the domestic minerals industry. In response to the phase one report, eight senior mining executives testified before Santini's House Subcommittee on Mines and Mining concerning mineral supply, access to foreign sources, environmental protection, conservation and recycling, national security, and capital formation. By year's end, Rep. Santini promised to prepare a hard-hitting committee report on problems affecting the non-fuel minerals industry to provide a better base for subsequent policy recommendations (MCJ, Jan. 1980, p. 34). On the technological front, interest again centered on mechanization, automation, and scaleup to improve and expand production. Computer use increased for calculation of ore reserves, mine planning, operations research, and mineral processing.

Power draw of the mill has been accepted as an indicator of the performance of the mill, yet the problem of predicting power under a given set of mill operating conditions still remains to be solved. In the literature, this problem of predicting power is attributed to a lack of knowledge with regard to the motion of the charge. Here a DEM based model is used to analyze the motion of the charge. The resulting information is used to predict the power draw of the mill. A 16-ft diameter mill is simulated. A factorial design study of the variables-mill speed, lifter configuration and ball size distribution-as independent variables is taken up. The power draw as a response variable is analyzed to establish the best operating condition of the mill.

It is important to realize that lending institutions have a very different risk-profile from that of an equity investor. For bank financing, a feasibility study must address the concerns of the lender and these can be summarized under the four 'PI Is: Project, Performance, Product and People. Generally, feasibility studies focus on the measurable project risks associated with a new venture, but frequently insufficient emphasis is placed on key risk areas such as ore grade and metallurgical recovery. Before accepting full or even partial non-recourse risk, financial institutions will demand evidence that the project was constructed according to specifications and within budget and that its Performance within agreed limits has been demonstrated. Product risk should be discussed in detail in any feasibility study. For industrial minerals, penetration of the market can be critical to success and for commodities with volatile prices, the sensitivity of the cash flow to a range of prices should be carried out. Methods of reducing price risk such as long term contracts or, in the case of gold, forward selling should be carefully evaluated. The People risk is rarely discussed in feasibility studies, but can be a key element. Few projects turn out to be faithful copies of the study and the ability of the operator to identify

"Truck-shovel systems are the dominant material loading and haulage machinery in open pit mining operations. Optimal selection, sizing, and allocation of this capital intensive equipment is highly desirable for both achieving production targets and improving the mine’s economics. In this study, discrete event simulation technique was applied for modeling material transportation in Golegohar open pit iron ore mine in Iran. Direct observation of the material loading and haulage for duration of three months resulted in statistical modeling of the operation in the form of probability distribution functions. These probability models were used as the inputs of a stochastic simulation model constructed in GPSS/H simulation language. The model was validated through comparison with the actual operation and was used to test different what-if scenarios and sensitivity analysis of the current system. Some modifications in the number of trucks, shovels, and dispatching strategies were proposed. Simulation resulted in considerable improvements in the mine’s production and economics.INTRODUCTION There are three different mechanisms of discrete, continues, and hybrid material transportation in open mines, including but not limited to: i) in-pit crusher and conveyor belts (hybrid), ii) slurry piping (continues) and iii) truck-shovel system (discrete). Although, each mechanism has its advantages, the truck-shovel system is the dominant method of material loading and handling in open pit mines owing to its high production rate, excellent flexibility, relatively low operating and capital costs, and good maintainability. General objectives of optimal equipment selection include: i) meeting the long and short term requirements of production rates, ii) human & equipment safety, iii) environmental protection, and iv) economic operations (Figure 1).The two most important decision factors on a truck-shovel system selection and sizing are the equipment geometry and size. Geometry (equipment width, weight, turning radius, swing angle, etc.) is mostly controlled by mine’s designs and layouts, as well, as operational constraints. After selection of a favorable geometry based on the constraints; the next step is to select the equipment manufacturer. Once the geometry and manufacturers are selected; the next step is to decide on models (e.g. Bucket size) and required number of each unit"

INTRODUCTION The LG-2 project is one element of the La Grande Complex, an integrated development of hydro-electric potential being constructed in north-western Quebec by the James Bay Energy Corporation. The project is located on the La Grande River about 65 miles east of Fort George on the James Bay coast and 600 miles north of Montreal. It comprises a 525 foot high dam, 81,000 feet of dykes, spillway and river diversion works and a 16 unit underground powerhouse that will have an installed capacity of 5,328 MW. The power installations at LG-2 represent approximately half of the total potential for the complex. When completed in 1982, LG-2 will rank as the largest underground powerhouse in the world. Studies and site explorations for the project were begun in 1971, construction commenced in 1973 and the roll date for the first machine is scheduled for February, 1980. GENERAL ARRANGEMENT OF POWER INSTALLATIONS As shown in Figure 1, the power installations are located on the south bank of the river about 4 miles downstream from the main dam. Wireless technology is a hot topic for anyone involved in the design, operation, maintenance or upgrading of mines or mineral processing plants because wireless technologies overcome barriers that have prevented many useful data inputs. Wireless communications can contribute to worker safety, satisfy environmental concerns, support plant security, track human and physical assets, and improve equipment maintenance. The cost structure of wireless is compelling and users can realize savings ? up to 90 percent less installed cost than wired instruments ? since wireless technology eliminates the need for expenses associated with cabling, engineering, construction and documentation. Many applications previously considered too expensive have become economically feasible with wireless. Two examples are continuous monitoring of safety showers to notify operators when one has been activated, and monitoring effluents to ensure environmental regulations are being met. In many cases, wireless transmitters can be installed where wired devices were too expensive to justify, or were not feasible due to physical or technical barriers. Examples include monitoring temperature measurements inside a rotating reactor or monitoring process variables in a tough, corrosive environment too challenging for a wired solution. Wireless also gives operating personnel mobility with the ability to communicate from remote or hard-to-reach zones. According to a recent Venture Development Corp. survey covering radio frequency (RF) of microwave industrial monitoring and control products, these features are contributing to the expected nationwide growth rate for industrial wireless applications of 19 percent annually from 2007 to 2012 (Taylor, 2008). At the same time, mineral producers have many questions about wireless systems including their applicability, reliability and security in this industry. Just what can wireless do? Is it secure and reliable? Can these instruments stand up to the rigors of the industry? Can wire-less technology provide the flexibility needed for mining applications?

Numerous Colorado mountain tunnels that date to the late 1800s convey water to the farming and urban communities of the eastern Front Range. Repairs to these remote facilities, often located in public lands at altitudes of 11,000 feet or more, require detailed planning, close coordination with multiple agencies, and creative execution. The N20 to N25 Tunnel (basic) segment was the second tunnel contract awarded for construction by The PB/MK Team. This project embodied 3.9 km (2.4 miles) of tunnel and was located within the northwest quadrant of the 86.9 km (54 mile) long main collider ring. The contract required the excavation and initial support of a 54.3 m (178 vlf) deep ventilation shaft, a connecting horseshoe shaped Adit and TBM starter tunnel and 3,865 m (12,680 If) long main collider tunnel with a 4.3 m (14 ft) minimum finished diameter. This paper discusses the construction methods, equipment utilized and the production achieved in the construction of the ventilation shaft, connecting adits and the main collider tunnel.

In Europe, novel low-cost excavator-mounted Multi Tool Miner (MTM) systems, consisting of cutter head, hammer, bucket and drill attachments permit one unit to perform multiple tasks replacing several purpose-built machines. At the Weser Tunnel in Germany, cross-passages between the twin tubes were excavated in frozen ground with a remote-controlled mini-excavator equipped with a quick-change cutter head, ripper tooth and bucket. In Switzerland at the N2 interstate near Basel, W. Dietrich AG enlarged a 2-lane tunnel to three lanes with a cutter head mounted on a special excavator. Blasting and heavy hammers were not permitted due to the closeness of the “live” twin tube. At the N20 Zurich bypass, the Joint Venture of Jaeger, Frutingerand AHB excavates highway tunnels, some with extremely large cross sections, conventionally. A cutter head mounted on an excavator removes the rock shattered by blasting precisely to the pay line, thus preserving the rock’s self-supporting capacity preventing subsidence and damages to water resources and buildings on the surface under low overburden.

Although there has been an increased interest in the electrokinetic properties of coal (1) research on the subject is still in an early stage of development (2,3,4,5,6,7) To the author's knowledge, no electrokinetic studies have been made on coal lithotypes - particularly anthracite lithotypes. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the double layer properties displayed at the anthracite/water interface (whole coal and lithotypes) as determined by streaming potential methods, It is hoped that this investigation and related future investigations will provide correlations from which the surface properties of any coal can be predicted and then related to surface dependent processes such as froth flotation and flocculation. Another aspect of this research, undertaken to determine the physical and chemical parameters necessary for anthracite lithotype differentiation, was previously published (8). The number of parameters involved, lithologic, organic and inorganic, and the wide divergence of these parameters within an individual coal limits the practical utilization of the results, however, the results are of value and of interest in guiding theoretical developments. Keeping the limitations in mind, the results are analyzed in terms of their application to froth flotation processes and are used to indicate the feasibility of making a lithotype separation by flotation.

The studied coal mi1e is an underground coal mine located in the northern Wasatch Plateau of central Utah (Figure 1) . Since operation began in 1981, in situ stress conditions have been encountered which differ from the assumed conditions utilized during early mine design efforts. Geologic structures also varied somewhat from those projected during initial geologic interpretations of the area. The encountered geologic conditions combined with the unusual stress conditions prompted a combined study of in situ stress and stress-related geologic structures. The study was conducted in two phases, with phase 1 consisting of detailed underground mapping and analysis of stress-related geologic structures to determine stress orientations from which they originated; and phase 2, consisting of over- coring two sites within the mine to determine present in situ stress orientations and magnitudes. GEOLOGIC ANALYSIS Three types of geologic structures have been encountered in the mine that act as indicators of stress orientations of the geologic past. Two of these structures, faulting, and igneous dikes, are directly measurable in the mine. A third type of structure, photolineation, was detected through remote sensing methods and shoe god correlation to roof conditions in certain areas of the mine. Faults Two major orientations of faulting have been encountered in the studied coal mine, including a system of N 80 W striking normal faults and a system of N 55 to 70 W striking oblique-slip faults. Only data collected from the oblique-slip faults were used for this study due to the fact that these faults offset the N 80 W faults wherever the two systems intersect, indicating that the N 55 to 70 W system was created by a more recent stress field. Figure 2 shows locations within the mine where data were collected from seven locations along oblique-slip faults. Data collection consisted of measurement of fault plane strike and dip, fault slickenside trend and plunge, and slip direction. The data are tabulated in Table 1. The fault data were then plotted on stereo nets to determine the stress orientations present at the td of faulting (Figure 3). The determined stress orientations are 32~0 included in Table 1. "In August 2013, the Appraisal Practices Board of the U.S. Appraisal Foundation issued its “APB Valuation Advisory #4 - Identifying Comparable Properties,” which contains analysis and examples that may suggest a broader meaning of the term “comparable properties” than is current convention in real property value appraisal in the United States and internationally. The advisory is directed at the appraisal of real property of all kinds, including interests in mineral properties, as indicated by the inclusion of two mineral property appraisal papers in the appendix that lists suggestions for further reading.This paper firstly reviews as background the historical meaning of a comparable property, with its perceived constraints, against real-world examples of transacted mineral properties that are adjusted to subject properties to provide market value indications. The advisory’s findings are then examined and evaluated as to whether they may influence and benefit the work of mineral property appraisers, particularly in situations where their sales comparison analyses may be challenged. The conclusion is that the combination of constraints that the advisory’s findings specify for use of the term “comparable” will for mineral properties be met infrequently or rarely. As a result, mineral property appraisers are advised to avoid using the terms comparable or “comp” when referring to transactions of mineral properties that they analyze to derive data for appraising the value of their subject mineral properties. IntroductionA mineral property appraiser rarely finds a sale of a mineral property that meets the literal meaning of the term “comparable sale,” by being directly comparable to the subject property of the appraisal in all factors of significance in the determination of the value of the property interest being appraised. Real estate appraisers have long used a more liberal interpretation of the meaning of comparable sale and its commonly used abbreviation, “comp.” Real estate appraisers compare sales to their subject property on the basis of price per hectare or acre of land and price per square meter or square foot of building floor area. Adjustments totaling to within the range of +30 to -30 percent from the sale property to the subject, before factoring in the property area, have generally been viewed as appropriate for the sale to be considered a comparable sale."

Experience at Energy West Mines in the Wasatch Plateau Coal Field, Utah, has shown that longwall face bursts occur mostly near the tailgate when extracting the third adjacent longwall in a panel section where depths exceed 610 m (2000 ft). It is believed that this is due to a combination of cover depth and side abutment stresses created by the widening of a pressure arch formed by interlocking and bridging of large blocks of" very competent strata. The 60-m-thick (200 ft) Castlegate Sandstone probably plays a key role in pressure arching. This paper presents a back-analysis of the location and magnitude of the stresses associated with face bursts that occurred when mining the 7th Right Longwall at the Deer Creek Mine. Improvement of these conditions may be achieved by widening the longwalls to attain critical subsidence width sooner while mining the second long-wall, and to reduce stresses at the face. Wider longwall faces, however, increase the chance of sandstone channel interception often associated with bursts. Satisfactory mitigation of face bursts beyond cover depths of 610 to 670 m (2000 to 2200 ft) may be difficult without using destressing techniques. The hydraulic fracturing/liquid infusion technique seems to offer the best possibilities for application in longwall mining.
