It is difficult to remove cadmium from raw indium using only electrolytic refining because their standard potentials are similar. In this paper, physical and chemical methods were used to remove Cd from raw indium. Indium metal is vacuum refined for two hours at 400°C with a vacuum pressure of 20 Pa. In this process, 99.70% of the Cd can be removed. The removal rate of Cd reaches 90% to 95% when indium is further smelted for 10 minutes in a 20% glycerin solution of KI and I2 at 180°C. When pre-indium is electrolytic refined in an In2(SO4)3-H2SO4 system, in which the indium content is 80 to 100 g/L, the pH is 2.0-3.0 and the current density is 80 to 100 A/m2, the contents of the impurities decrease and the purity of the indium product reaches 99.99%.

The resulting diversity permits tunability of collector chemistry to meet a range of flotation problems. Several attributes of the new collectors are presented.

This paper describes the design and construction of a 22.86 m (75 ft) long jacked tunnel, which was successfully installed, despite difficult mixed face conditions at Metro-North’s Westport Station, in Connecticut in the fall of 2003. The tunnel utilized what is believed to be, the first application of a steel grillage system within the United States. This grillage was installed before the jacking started and allowed the tunnel to be jacked under four live railway tracks, which included the Acela high speed line, without affecting train operations. The clearance between the top of the tunnel and the rails was only 0.9 m (3 ft).

Banks frequently manage large privately owned mineral land trust accounts for estate heirs. The bank has a fiduciary obligation to follow the “Prudent Man Rule”, which requires that trust properties be managed at least as well as a prudent and knowledgeable owner could. However, banks may not have internal staff proficient at mineral property values, lease contracts, royalties, mining practices, etc. This is an opportunity for experienced geologic consultants and certified minerals appraisers to provide needed help. Items valuable to Trust managers may include: 1. Marketing privately owned mineral trust lands to mining or oil & gas firms, assuring competitive offering prices and terms; 2. Negotiating favorable new mineral lease and purchase-option contracts; 3. Monitoring progress of mining, royalty payments, land reclamation, and environmental clean-up work; 4. Balancing future mining income with later industrial, commercial or housing development, timber harvest, etc.; 5. Assuring that Depletion Allowance tax advantage is taken for actual mine royalty payments, but not for annual non-mining lease (rental) income; 6. Appraising in-ground mineral value for bank audits, estate tax valuations, and equitable property division between heirs; and 7. Serving as expert witness, representing the legal interests of the bank, trusts, and the mineral heirs in litigation. Banks do welcome reliable advice which assists them in achieving the “Prudent Man Rule” and improving mineral income to their land Trust accounts.

In January we published a questionnaire asking about the content of MINING ENGINEERING and about your interests. At the same time we hired an outside firm, READEX Inc., of St. Paul, MN, to send the same questionnaire to a sampling of about 1000 US members, selected on an nth name basis, so that we could have some preliminary numbers for the Annual Meeting in February. READEX sent us the final results of its survey in March. At that time, 525 responses of the 992 surveys sent out had been returned, for a 52.9% response, an extraordinarily high return for a low-key (no incentive for return) random sampling. On May 7, we cut off on tabulating returns from the magazine so that we could report the results to you in this issue. At that time, we had 594 questionnaires returned. Our 594 and READEX's 525 (we have assumed that relatively few people returned both), represent a 1119 return, about 3.5% of the approximately 32,000 who received the January issue of ME. About ME Through responses to the questionnaire, we were hoping to learn more about you, your interests, and how the magazine could better serve you. Those of you who responded, told us something positive-you look at or read the magazine. Of the 1119 respondents, 1068 or 95.4% indicated that they had read or looked through the November and/or December issues. Those of you who refer to the magazine once are 466 or 42.6%. Those of you who refer to the magazine two or three times are 559 or 51.1%. Those of you who refer to the magazine four or more times are 68 or 6.2%. How much time do you spend reading the magazine? Of those responding to this question: 186 spent up to 1/2 hr 16.6% 590 spent up to 1 hr 52.7% 292 spent 1-2 hr 26.1% 51 spent more than 2 hr 4.6% In an informal survey among our staff, we determined that most people spend 1/2 to 1 hr reading magazines to which they subscribe at home. Does that match your experience? Many of you, 764 or 69.4%, clip your magazine for further reference. Also, many of you, 513 or 64.2%, do not pass your copy on to another reader, indicating perhaps that you are clipping it or receiving the magazine at home. Those magazines that are passed on reach: 2 people - 159 - 20.0% 3-5 people - 95 - 11.9% 5 or more - 31 - 3.9% Answers to what portions of the magazine you find useful indicated that the top three were Industry News, feature articles, and Technical Papers; see Table 1. The "other" category included advertising-display, classified, and employment-Coming Events, product information, Washington Survey, new books, the reader service card, and Engineering Fundamentals. Of those responding, 797 or 75.3% indicated a preference for dual notation of SI (metric) with English units; 228 or 21.5% preferred all SI units; while 34 or 3.2% preferred SI with dual notation of other metric units. Based on the preliminary numbers reported by READEX for this question, the MINING ENGINEERING Committee in February voted to return to a policy of dual notation. This decision has been implemented. We asked for your appraisal of the technical level of the magazine. Of those responding, 78 or 7.4% indicated it is too technical, 147 or 13.8% indicated it is not technical enough, and 836 or 78.8% judged it to have the correct tech¬nical level. In response to the question about whether you like to read an occasional feature that is not technically oriented, 32 said no, but an overwhelming 97% (1024) said yes. The phenomenon of zero order production of fines associated with the batch comminution of monosize feeds in tumbling mills has been examined in the context of the size discretized population balance model. It has been shown that the model admits zero order production kinetics only in an approximate sense. The necessary and sufficient conditions for approximate zero order production of fines have been obtained. As these conditions cannot be expressed in terms of the model parameters Sj and Bi,j alone,. several examples have been used to illustrate some of the important characteristics of the zero order production systems. One of the important characteristics of these systems has been identified as a "weak necessary condition", and the other as a " favourable condition ".

Your assessment of the minerals business. The global mining industry is strong. I am convinced it will continue meeting the mineral needs of the world population for the foreseeable future. Two developments have greatly enhanced the industry’s ability to produce low-cost minerals. Technological innovations have resulted in increased productivity. And there has also been a dramatic expansion of the number of favorable countries in which to explore and mine. Capital expenditures have flowed to the low-production-cost mines and development projects as well as to the exploration projects and stable countries having the best potential for valuable mineral discoveries.

Ground calcium carbonate (GCC) and chemically precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) have become important mineral-based commodities in recent years. GCC manufacturing generally requires high purity and high brightness deposits of marble, chalk or limestone as the stone source. PCC usually uses limes made from lesser quality limestone deposits. GCC products have a wide span of particle size, with a d50 size ranging from sub micrometers to as large as several inches such as those used in landscaping. PCC products are typically limited to less than 10 µm (1,250 mesh). Each PCC product has a narrowly distributed size range. GCC and PCC products tend to have higher levels of whiteness com-pared with other traditional filler and extenders, such as kaolin and talc. Published statistics of GCC production volume often vary due to the exclusion of certain size range GCC products. According to Roskill’s latest estimate, world GCC capacity was believed to exceed 56 Mt (62 millionst) during 2004 for all grades.

All aspects of precious metals processing were featured at a symposium held Oct. 3-6, 2007, at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson, AZ. Although billed as "Precious Metals Processing: Advances in Primary and Secondary Operations," the symposium also looked at economic, regulatory and environmental issues affecting the precious metals industry. The symposium was sponsored by SME; The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS); and the International Precious Metals Institute (IPMI). It included workshops, technical presentations, guest speakers and social activities. Mining industry management, process engineers, equipment manufacturers, consultants, metals marketers, academics and others involved in the precious metals industry attended the conference. Needless to say, with gold nearing $25.721g ($800/oz) and platinum pushing $41.801g ($1,300/oz) at the time of the meeting, the mood among the attendees could not have been more positive. The symposium was privileged to have Father Ernest S. Sweeney, professor of Latin American History at Loyola Marymount University, as a guest speaker. Sweeney, a Jesuit priest, provided a colorful account of the history of mining in Arizona and the surrounding region of North America (Fig. 1). He described the importance of the mining industry and said, "To go down into the bowels of the earth to extract its riches for the benefit of all of us is an awesome task deserving our sincere respect and gratitude." However, he warned the industry that: "The ever increasing de¬mands on the mining community for the protection of the environment calls for endless efforts to maintain ethical standards in a business filled with risk, uncertainty and frustrations." Sweeney noted that the Spanish conquest of the Americas was driven by the three fundamental motives of "God, glory and gold." He noted that gold was the basic, most powerful driving force of the conquest and occupation of the Spanish empire. The first European to explore Arizona was the Franciscan missionary Marcos de Niza. He came to Arizona in 1539 in search of the fabled Seven Golden Cities of Cíbola. Sweeny noted that Spanish explorers were consumed, as Cortes himself described it, "with a burning fever that only gold could cure." Sweeney told the story of some of these early explorers, including Francisco Vázquez de Coronado who "mounted an expedition in pursuit of gold and rich empires to conquer." Coronado passed through Arizona and discovered the Grand Canyon. "Coronado returned to Mexico exhausted, bankrupt and disillusioned, but with a wealth of new knowledge of the borderlands of the Spanish empire," said Sweeney. He then described the colorful history of early gold, silver and copper exploration and mining in Arizona, including the famous tale of the Lost Dutchman's Mine. Led by a surge in coal production and prices in recent years, Colorado’s mining industry is taking part in the same revival as others states and the world. Not too many years ago, the state’s industry was languishing in the same doldrums as the rest of the mining world. Ironic for a state whose history was based on mining. Now, however, Colorado’s mining can boast increased production in all commodities produced, along with prices that allowed companies to expand, increase work forces and post improved shareholder value. So there was a lot of optimism at the Colorado Mining Association’s (CMA) 107th National Western Mining Conference in February. The conference, held in Denver, attracted more than 500 attendees and 39 exhibitors. The theme was Colorado Mines the World.

This paper presents tunnel design considerations for the SR75/282 Transportation Corridor Project in Coronado, California. The project is managed by the City of Coronado in cooperation with Caltrans and the US Navy and may include a one-mile long twin-tunnel section with two options: a 36.5 foot diameter twin-bored tunnel or a twin cut-and-cover box. The alignment crosses the Coronado Fault, and design provisions were needed at the fault crossing to maintain life safety and prevent rapid inundation of the tunnel in the event of fault rupture. These provisions are discussed along with considerations related to liquefaction and ground shaking. The project is currently in the planning stage with construction to start around 2012.

Proper analysis of washabiity data can lead to the development of a maximum yield coal preparation plant flow sheet. Simulations, as simple as spreadsheet mass and water balancing, are important in examining yield maximization and middlings liberation. Key to such attribute tracking flow sheet simulations is the distribution model, expressing the probability of a species reporting to the product stream. There are many such models in the literature. This paper examines a functional form that can represent or fit most of the proposed distribution functions.

Inter-Mountain Labs, IML, performed a study comparing mining waste rock sample analysis by Net Carbonate Value (NCV) and Modified Sobek acid-base accounting procedures. The study looked at 468 waste rock samples and compared the data for Neutralization Potential (NP), Acid Generation Potential (AGP), Net Neutralization Potential (NNP), and the ratio of NP/AGP. The study found that a majority of the samples were below 50 Tons CaCO3/kTons. This subset of ?low-level? samples was also examined separately for Acid Base Accounting parameters. The analysis compared the NCV procedures to the Modified Sobek procedures and concludes that the NCV procedures are as protective of the environment as Modified Sobek procedures.

"Mining used to be a business primarily focused on the technical aspects of getting valuable ore out of the ground and extracting the minerals efficiently. Without denying the importance of these skills, a narrow focus on technical issues is no longer enough to guarantee success when it comes to exploiting rare earth element (REE) deposits. Molycorp failed to enter the global REE market in a successful manner, while none of the many REE exploration projects has turned into an active mine so far and none is expected to commence operations in the near future. Accordingly, the world of REE is far more complex compared to other commodities. This paper looks into the REE industry to identify the factors that can connect potential U.S. REE mines to the market. The ability to break free from past thinking and become future-focused is a key driver. Mining of REE is pointless without a corresponding value-adding chain, while developing a value chain without first establishing an uninterruptible source of REE is also senseless. The mining sector must be based on the REE value chain and vice versa, along with the establishment of a market channel for the REE products that come out of the mine. INTRODUCTION It has been seven years since rare earth elements became the subjects of front-page headlines. It was when the controversial Chinese export policy for these critical commodities was epitomised in a maritime border dispute with Japan in September 2010 that resulted in the big REE crisis and price spike of 2011 (Barakos et al, 2016c; Mancheri, 2015). The world was dismayed, especially in REE-importing countries, such as the United States that was and is still totally dependent on Chinese production and exports (Barakos et al, 2016c; Kennedy, 2015). The short-lived alarm initiated a treasure hunt by way of exploration for REE deposits all over the world. The continuously growing demand on the one hand and the Chinese sovereignty of the REE-market on the other, led the rest of the world to explore their own REE resources. In just a few years, more than 400 projects were initiated to explore REE deposits outside of China (ERECON, 2015; Goodenough, 2016). The prices of REE, however, dropped rapidly and at the moment of writing this paper are in 6-year lows, at the level of the price average before the 2011 crisis (Barakos, 2017). The viability of even major established producers is being challenged, not to mention the development prospects of potential REE-market entrants (Barakos et al, 2016b; Rollat et al, 2016). Production cutbacks and industry consolidation in China impel REE market experts to forecast that prices have already reached their lowest point and have nowhere to go but up (Adamas, 2015; Roskill 2015). Yet, expectations for increased REE prices are limited and drastic changes are unlikely to happen in the near future, as there is still excess supply in the overall REE market (Barakos, 2017). Nevertheless, the low prices of rare earths are not the only reason that potential producers are struggling to enter the global REE market. Among other parameters, the separation of the individual elements seems to be the most important factor, as it is technically challenging and expensive to build and to operate."

INTRODUCTION This paper discusses the design of the subsurface nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada; and possible concepts for construction of the subsurface facility. Subsurface construction at Yucca Mountain is planned to last for 20 or more years, and may be accomplished using tunnel boring machines (TBM), drill and blast methods, raise bore machines, and roadheaders. The design of the subsurface facility includes approximately 107 km (66 miles) of tunnels and drifts. The vast majority of the repository will be excavated with TBMs. Design and construction concepts for the subsurface repository discussed in this paper are based on the License Application that was submitted to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) on June 3, 2008. The License Application was subsequently docketed by the NRC in September 2008. When a Construction Authorization is received from the NRC, notices to proceed with subsurface construction at Yucca Mountain will be issued by DOE. The Yucca Mountain site is located in the Mojave Desert approximately 150 km (90 miles) northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada. The site is on federal land in southern Nevada and is shown in Figure 1. Yucca Mountain is a ridge of volcanic rocks com-posed primarily of solidified volcanic ash. Previous underground construction work at Yucca Mountain included excavation of two tunnels using two different TBMs. The first tunnel, the Exploratory Studies Facility (ESF), is a 7.62 m (25 ft) diameter tunnel that is 7,877 m (25,843 ft) long and was described by Morris and Hansmire at the Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) in 1995. The second tunnel, known as the Enhanced Characterization of the Repository Block (ECRB), was a TBM drive of 5.0 m (16 ft, 5 in.) in diameter and 2,681 m (8,796 ft) long. The second tunnel was excavated in 1998 and was described by Fulcher, Eastlund and Copeland at RETC 1999 and is named the East?West Cross Drift in that paper. (These previously excavated tunnels are shown in Figure 2.) In the volcanic rock formation where the vast majority of the planned repository will be con-structed, previous tunneling conditions were generally very good.

When addressing Germany’s resource supplies, we need to distinguish between those domestically available and imported ones. Resource extraction ostensibly competes with the designation of protection areas. However, the parallel existence of wildlife and plant life, and operations in the areas used for resource extractions is continually underestimated. The European Commission has compiled guidance documents facilitating the extraction of resources from protected areas. With regard to resource productivity, the market appears to be the appropriate instrument for minimising resource consumption. Policy makers are now called upon to create a legal framework leading to a consensus accepted by society.

The roles of pulsating mechanisms such as the amplitude and frequency of the jig cycle are well established in jigging. Also well established are the roles of the size ratio and the volume fraction of the feed. In iron ore beneficiation plants, these process parameters are optimized to achieve the highest efficiency. However, the role of one of the more important feed characteristics, the liberation characteristic of the feed, has not been studied in detail. Evaluation of the liberation characteristics is difficult because the required washability test is not viable for iron ore feed. In this paper, a new method is proposed in which the liberation characteristics are measured through a separation efficiency value. In the new evaluation method, jigging parameters such as amplitude and frequency of the jig cycle are optimized from the fundamental understanding of the process dynamics and feed characteristics such as size distribution. Then, feeds with different liberation characteristics are tested to evaluate the liberation characteristics of feed in jigging.

Conventional barrier pillars in underground coal mines are intended to protect mains and sub-main entries for relatively long periods of time. Inter-panel barrier pillars that may be used in especially deep coal mines, say, below 800 m (2,400 ft), are intended to protect longwall panel faces and adjacent panel entries for the life of nearby panels. Barrier pillar failures have serious consequences, especially when failure is sudden and catastrophic. Design of barrier pillars is thus of considerable importance to safety and efficiency of operations. Locally, failure occurs at the limit to elasticity when stress tends to exceed strength. Strength of rock is stress dependent, so an analysis of stress is central to rational design of barrier pillars. There are several approaches to stress analysis for coal mine pillar design that range from the simplified but popular tributary area method including variations that use empirical definitions of the tributary area (volume) to more sophisticated numerical methods such as the boundary element method and the finite element method. Despite ease of use, empirical methods are limited and always suspect when applied to conditions beyond their scope of definition, while boundary element methods do not generally include pillars in the solution domain. The finite element method is not so restricted and thus is a natural choice for conventional and inter-panel barrier pillar safety analyses. Caving of roof strata certainly affects the distribution of stress about longwall faces and nearby barrier pillars. Conventional wisdom that considers roof strata to respond as cantilever beams indicates the longer the span the greater are loads on longwall faces and face supports. Failure of roof beams, caving, shortens spans and relieves face and support loads. The same view is applicable to barrier pillars in that long roof spans outside of barrier pillars leads to higher pillar loads than short spans. Hence, caving should be beneficial to barrier pillar safety. However, the benefit may be small depending on the extent of caving and only in the form of a slight reduction in overburden weight transmitted to the barrier pillar, especially in case of inter-panel barrier pillars. FINITE ELEMENT MODEL Finite element models for stress analysis in rock mechanics are formulated in consideration of physical laws, kinematics, and material laws. These models meet the essential requirements for equilibrium of stress, satisfy strain displacements relations, and in a general sense, relate stress to strain through material laws, often referred to as constitutive relations. The last may be complex and replete with nonlinearities. A de facto engineering material law is the elastic model in the form of Hooke?s law for linear, homogeneous materials that may be anisotropic. A limit to elasticity is imposed by strength in the form of a failure criterion or yield function that accommodates triaxial stress states. Examples used in rock mechanics are the well-known Mohr-Coulomb (MC)criterion, the popular Hoek-Brown (HB) criterion, and the Drucker-Prager (DP) criterion. The first is linear in stress, while the second is nonlinear. Both do not include any effect of the intermediate principal stress. The last is also linear in stress but includes the intermediate principal stress. All show an increase in the major principal stress at failure with confining pressure. In the UT2/3 finite element programs, the failure criterion Y is a nonlinear, anisotropic form and is also the plastic potential [1]: [YJI=+ 11NYJI=+- (1) ] where N is an exponent, usually 2, and J2 and I1 are nonlinear anisotropic forms of the second invariant of deviatoric stress and the first invariant of principal stress. The form (1) reduces to DP when N=1and isotropy prevails. When Y = 1, the limit to elasticity is reached and plastic deformation is possible. The material constants that enter (1) are all computed from unconfined compressive, tensile, and, in case of anisotropy, shear strengths. These latter strengths may be estimated from conventional laboratory test data. Of course, joints in field-scale rock masses induce different values. How different is often a matter of conjecture. For comparative studies, laboratory rock properties seem adequate. Inelastic, that is, plastic behavior occurs with strain beyond the elastic limit. Strain hardening, ideal plasticity, and strain softening are possibilities. Ideally brittle behavior with complete loss of strength is an extreme form of strain softening [2]. Caving may also be considered as strain softening with a less drastic reduction of material properties. As intact roof strata fail, fall, and form a rubble pile below, a new material is formed with greatly reduced elastic moduli and strengths, say, 1/100th of the original intact moduli and strengths. From another viewpoint, caving is simply a natural cut and fill process. Input for stress analysis by the finite element method includes: 1. Preexcavation stress state 2. Geology (stratigraphic column) 3. Structure (major faults, joint sets) 4. Elastic moduli 5. Strengths, and specific gravities of each rock type 6. Excavation sequence Output from an analysis includes distributions of: 1. Stress 2. Strain 3. Displacement 4. Local factor of safety (element fs) The last is defined as the ratio of strength to stress and in view of the failure criterion (1), is the ratio [fsJstrengthJstress=] where the numerator is the maximum possible value and the denominator is the actual value of the square root of the second invariant of deviatoric stress. This invariant is a measure of shear stress intensity but also reduces to uniaxial tensile and compressive strengths as the case may be. Following the Sago Mine accident, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) asked the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center to study several possible methane explosion scenarios in the Sago coal mine. The study used a 1-ft resolution map of the mine to produce a 3-dimensional (3-D) model of a portion of the mine, including the sealed area where the explosion occurred. An advanced 3-D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code was used to calculate the explosion pressures within the sealed area, on the mine seals, and in nearby regions of the mine. Based on the best available information on methane concentrations and assumptions on homogeneity and on layering and mix composition, three separate initial conditions of methane-air concentrations and location were studied. This paper discusses the CFD modeling technique, the results of the calculations, the challenges of conducting this type of modeling, and the advantages and limitations of CFD modeling of accident investigations of mine explosions.
