Microwave pretreatment can improve grindability by weakening brittle particulate material prior to size reduction. The differential thermal expansion experienced by multiphase materials during rapid heating can also promote damage in the grain-boundary region, which may ultimately translate into enhanced liberation. The effect of microwave pretreatment on the breakage characteristics of different ores has been studied using the Ultrafast Load Cell. The energy accumulated during impact (fracture energy) and the particle stiffness have been measured for untreated and microwaved ore samples. It has been observed that microwave pretreatment can weaken brittle multiphase particulate material, as observed by reductions in fracture energy and increase in damage.

With the demand for higher grade feed by the American steel industry and the depletion of the direct shipping ores from the Marquette Iron Range and elsewhere, there was a need to develop the low-grade orebodies. The large reserve of fine grained oxidized iron-formation at the Tilden Mine has been the object of research and development efforts to concentrate the iron oxides as far back as 1949. Preceding the present mining-concentration-pelletizing complex, about 6,500,000 long tons of direct shipping siliceous ore were shipped from the Tilden Mine. Following development of the concentrating and pelletizing flowsheets, engineering and construction was initiated to develop the mine and construct concentrating and pelletizing facilities to produce 4,000,000 LTPY of pellets from this low grade crude ore. Operations started in late 1974 with Algoma Steel, J&L Steel Corp., The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company, The Steel Company of Canada, Ltd., Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp., and Sharon Steel Corp. as participants. Cleveland-Cliffs operates and manages the operation. Due to the non-magnetic nature of the ore and the fine grinding required to liberate the iron oxide minerals, this crude ore was not amenable to concentration by conventional methods. The iron oxides of the Tilden orebody have a grain size of less than 25 microns and recovery of the finer, well-liberated iron oxides is essential. Conventional methods of des liming employing cyclones or thickeners were not feasible because of the excessive loss of iron oxides in the finer fractions.

Introduction Project scheduling . . . . • What is it? • Why is it done? • Who does it? • How is it done? • When is it done? These are some of the questions that will be addressed in this paper. It is intended that by exploring these questions, an understanding of project scheduling, its purpose and benefits can be achieved. The purpose of this article is not to describe in detail "how to schedule", but rather to give an overview of the scheduling function on a project. A successful scheduling effort is dependent upon the people responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring the schedule, and the tools and procedures that are used. These three elements are integral components of project scheduling. What is it? A schedule is the integration of network relationships, resource constraints and the calendar. The schedule identifies when the activities "will" be done, while the network states when they "must" be done. Networking techniques are the most widely accepted scheduling tool for complex projects. The benefit of the network is the simplicity in illustrating, presenting and analyzing the dependency relationships of a project. The logic network is the foundation of the schedule. When calendar dates are applied to the logic network, it becomes a schedule which provides the basis for evaluation of project status, forecasting the occurrence of events and controlling the project. The sequence of activities that requires the longest time to complete determines the overall duration of the schedule. This longest sequence of activities is called the "critical path". The "critical path method" (CPM) is used to describe this particular schedule network methodology. The two common conventions of CPM networks are the "arrow diagram met hod" (ADM) and the "precedence diagram method" (PIM). There are arguments in favor of each of these two methods, and usually the one that is used is a matter of personal preference, project directive or corporate procedure.

"INTRODUCTION Shield tunnelling is often used in constructing underground infrastructure in cities due to the ability to limit settlements and damage to existing buildings. However, in an urban environment with soft overburden and buildings on pile foundations such as the North-South Line project in Amsterdam, there is a tendency to design the tunnel well below the surface and below the pile tip level in order to reduce interaction between tunnelling process and piles. This results in deep tunnels and deep station boxes. When the tunnels are located close to the surface and above the pile tip level, this would reduce the required depth of the station boxes and the construction cost. Moreover, other benefits of shallow tunnels are the low operational cost in the long-term and shorter traveling time from the surface to the platforms. Still, the tunnels should be constructed in such a manner that existing buildings are not structurally damaged, which results in a minimum required distance between tunnelling process and existing buildings. In this paper, the extent of the area that is influenced by tunnelling will be investigated in order to determine the limit distance from tunnelling to existing foundations without inducing too large building deformation. From analysing empirical data of many shield tunnels, Peck (1969) firstly presented the settlement trough on the surface induced by tunnelling in soft soil as a Gaussian distribution. This is also confirmed by other authors (Cording and Hansmire, 1975; Mair et al., 1993; Ahmed and Iskander, 2010). In this study, the Gaussian curve is used to investigate the ground movement when tunnelling in order to find the effects on existing structures. Based on the results from centrifuge test and empirical data, Mair et al. (1993) showed that the subsurface settlement profile distributes as the Gaussian curve also. The width of settlement trough at the depth z depends on the depth of the tunnel z0 and a coefficient K depending on depth. Other studies by Moh et al. (1996), Grant and Taylor (2000) and Jacobsz (2003) based on Mair et al. (1993) proposed a limited change of K in various kinds of soil."

Considerable success has been achieved in recent years in reducing concentrations of respirable dust in UK coalmines; thankfully this has been reflected in significant improvements in pneumoconiosis statistics. However, continuous increases in mechanisation and in rates of working, accompanied by more stringent dust regulations, necessitate the introduction of improved and often more sophisticated methods of dust control. The increased application of exhaust ventilation and air cleaning techniques seems likely to be the most important step forward in dust control in coalmining during the next few years. A typical drivage in a UK mine is not more than 16 ft (5 m) wide and is supported by steel arches. In the past the majority of such roadways were driven by the conventional means of blasting and loading. Since the main purpose of ventilation was to clear blasting fumes and to provide adequate scouring of firedamp, not surprisingly it was usual to have 'forcing' ventilation. Present systems of operation are making increasing use of heading machines and it is not surprising that well over half of all drivages are now ventilated by exhausting methods. (1) The great majority of coal getting in the UK is from longwall faces, usually in seams of less than 6 ft (1.8 m) thickness. Although this method of min¬ing has many advantages in terms of safety and productivity, dust control is made more difficult because of the need for men and machines to work in the same ventilation stream. Much emphasis has been placed on improving the design and methods of opera¬tion of longwall machines to reduce dust production, and improved ventilation has provided greater dilution, and in consequence, reductions in dust concentration. On all machines water is now fed through internal galleries to the cutting elements. Unfortunately, one of the difficulties associated with mining thin seams is that there is some unavoidable cutting in the roof or floor and in many seams there are faults to be traversed and dirt bands which must be removed with the coal. Under these conditions it appears that the use of exhaust ventilation and air cleaning offers the most promising way of achieving satisfactory dust conditions.

Introduction Although innovative coal extraction technology can be approached from many angles, this paper focuses on three: innovation in response to rising costs, to changing mining conditions, and to regulatory issues. Before exploring these three subjects, however, a basic question needs to be raised. Why Innovation? Coal is widely heralded, and quite correctly so, as the United States' "ace in the hole." It has been said that the U.S. is to coal what the Arabs are to oil. The implication is that we have nearly inexhaustible reserves - that coal is cheap, plentiful, and easy to extract. Indeed, because our current productive capacity is estimated to be 15-20% greater than demand, we have been given a false sense of security about the ease of future coal extraction. Therefore, innovative measures are being concentrated on developing technologies for the demand side of coal, including power generation, synthetic fuels, and industrial applications. What is often forgotten is that the unit cost of producing energy from these new technologies depends critically on the cost of the coal feedstock -in some cases the coal consumed accounts for more than one-third the total cost. Thus, while the developers of the end-use technologies struggle to improve the overall thermal efficiency of their process by one or two per¬centage points to make the energy produced competitive in the marketplace, they often are unaware of the risk of a 3 to 6% increase in coal costs wiping out the expensive, hard-earned results of their research. Energy planners are just beginning to realize that coal is not a uniform commodity available at low cost in infinite quantities. Coal is a heterogeneous material whose cost and quality vary widely with local conditions. To produce the massive amounts of projected coal-based energy at reasonable costs, we urgently need devel¬opments in extraction technology, as well as in end-use technology. Thus, coal extraction, coal conversion and utilization, and end -use energy consumption must be viewed as highly interdependent parts of an energy supply network (Fig. 1). And current emphasis on conversion and utilization must be balanced by more emphasis on upstream technologies, including coal extraction. Even more important, the impacts of innovation (or the lack thereof) in any one technology area in the energy supply network need to be discussed and understood by those working in each of the other areas. Why innovation in coal ex¬traction technology? Figuratively, we are all in the "coal boat" together - geologists, miners, transporters, processors, power producers, distributors, and consumers. Innovation is required from each of these sectors to overcome the obstacles that prevent greater use of our most abundant national energy resource. All other links in the coal energy supply network depend on large volumes of coal produced at reasonable costs. Declines in productivity, therefore, must be reversed; the more difficult mining conditions that will be encountered call for new methods and equipment, and regulatory issues must be resolved if the coal ex¬traction link is to be a strength rather than a weakness in the planned U.S. transition to an economy based more on coal and less on imported petroleum. "Highwall miners continue to be implemented by operations to increase recovery, improve margins, and justify higher stripping ratios as high quality surface reserves become increasingly rare. Many times, operations facilitate projected underground operations by leaving an intact highwall for development purposes. These facts result in larger highwalls that are left standing for increased periods of time prior to reclamation. As a consequence, worker exposure and risk is also elevated, resulting in higher potential for accidents or fatalities relating to surface highwalls. Highwall stability is a complex issue, dependent on both geologic and mining factors. Dynamic numerical modeling offers the capability to assess possible stability issues related to blasting-induced ground vibrations. Research has been conducted to evaluate the effect of highwall stability due to ground vibrations from blasting events. Additionally, the relationship of amplitude and frequency, and their impact on highwall stability is investigated. The results of this modeling indicate that amplitude has little impact on stability. However, frequency has a significant impact on highwall stability. INTRODUCTION The number of mining fatalities has declined since 2010, and 2016 is currently on pace to continue this trend (MSHA 2016). This decline can be directly correlated to the decline in surface mining activity and the overall decline of the coal industry. However, since 2002 the percentage of surface coal mine fatalities associated with highwall activities remains relatively high, constituting approximately 15% of all surface mine fatalities. 2014 was the first year with a highwall failure fatality since 2011. Most recent surface coal mining fatalities are associated with machinery and haulage. Table 1 provides a summary of the total surface coal mining fatalities, and the number of highwall failure fatalities dating back to 2010.Highwall stability is a complex issue, dependent upon geology and geologic discontinuities within the rock mass, along with highwall geometry, standing time, and applied stresses. Another possible concern that has not been previously investigated is the effect of blasting-induced stresses on highwall stability and the stability of web/barrier pillar systems as a result of ground vibrations from blasting events. Many modern surface coal mines employ numerous extraction fronts that rely on blasting for primary rock breakage. This results in highwall and highwall pillar systems experiencing blasting-induced stresses of many different types and magnitudes."

Friction Rock Stabilizers, trade name II Sp 1 it Sets'" have been under research and development by the author and the Ingersoll-Rand Company since February of 1973. The United States Bureau of Mines and the Mines Enforcement and Safety Administration as well as many mining companies have cooperated in field testing the device. Split Set rock anchors are distinctively different from the widely used mechanical rock anchors or fully grouted rock anchors. They control ground movement internally in a manner that allows controlled deformation during the early phase of the ground reaction curve but then, as secondary creep develops, anchorage per unit length increases and they serve to strengthen and stabilize the opening for long periods of time. The history of research and development of the Scott Split Set rock anchor system with accompanying laboratory and field test data is presented in this paper.

Since start-up in 1985 the Cannon Mine has produced and shipped a 170 g Au/tonne (5 oz Au/ton) flotation concentrate to various smelters for gold and silver recovery. Several processed have been investigated to economically produce dore' at the mine site from the refractory concentrate. This paper describes recent laboratory and pilot scale test work utilized in the process design and engineering feasibility study of a 73 tonne/day (80 ton/day) pressure oxidation and CIL facility. The designed pressure oxidation circuit utilizes a series of vertical autoclave units operating at 170°C (338"F) and 1.4 MPa (200 psig). Projected operating costs are discussed.

Disposal of solid and liquid wastes from mining and milling operations has become a focus of attention in recent years. Consequently, the geotechnical engineer is more frequently associated with design of disposal facilities. Jack Wulff, a representative of one consulting firm with experience in this field, talks with ME about the geotechnical engineer's contribution. Mr. Wulff, mine and mill waste disposal today is receiving more attention-and many more dollars-than in the past. Regulatory agencies have promulgated demanding requirements concerning mill waste (especially uranium mill waste) and specialist consultants are frequently being called in to design disposal systems. What can the experienced geotechnical engineer add to the development of waste disposal facilities? It's true that geotechnical engineers have recently become more visible in the minerals sector, but we've been around mining for a long time-as foundation engineers for mills and mine support buildings, and for geotechnical aspects of open pits, pipelines, railroads, roads, and so forth. We've also designed water supply dams, which could be considered recursors of tailings dams and other forms of disposal systems. Let me show by example what geotechnical engineering can contribute to waste disposal facility design. I recently was asked to look at several small wastewater impoundments which had failed. The design of the earth embankments appeared, at first glance, to be rather conservative. They were only about 3.4 m high, the slopes were 3 to 1 (horizontal to vertical), with about 24 m of bottom contact with the earth foundation. But there had been three episodes of dike failure in a few months, all upon initial filling. The problem was the nature of some material in the foundation that was also used as structural fill-a dispersive clay that readily deflocculated and eroded on contact with water, especially with seeping or flowing water. The design did not include the defensive measures required to use such materials confidently in water retention structures. Apparently, the designer did not recognize the potential problem posed by the unusual soil characteristics. That's the sort of engineering information fundamental to geotechnical engineering, but not necessarily a part of the civil, structural, or mining engineer's professional training or experience. This difference in expertise is not simply a matter of factual knowledge-it also affects the design process. The structural engineer can design a structure to fit the client's functional needs and can specify the materials (grade of steel, PVC, concrete, etc.) to meet the demands of the design. The geotechnical engineer's design process is somewhat different, since we work with natural materials, not man-made materials produced according to specification. We first have to establish what kinds of materials are available (usually directly from the chosen site, since importation of materials becomes expensive). Then we determine the engineering properties and characteristics and, finally, design the structure to fulfill the client's requirements within parameters dictated by available materials. In brief, the geotechnical engineer works with naturally-evolved, not man-made, materials and uses design techniques developed to accommodate that fact. Because no two sites are exactly alike in configuration, structural (geologic) characteristics, or available materials, there will be unique design and judgmental questions to be resolved on virtually every project. You said that water retention dams could be considered the precursors of tailings dams-you probably had a specific technical relationship in mind. There's a very strong carryover of methodology from earth dam design, where the technology developed and where it has become very refined. The most serious problem for on-line coarse particle size measurement from a conveyor belt by image analysis is the overlap phenomenon that occurs between adjacent particles. A methodology is developed and described in this paper to estimate the sieve size distribution from the overlapped projected particle images as might be obtained from a conveyor belt. Two aspects of the overlap problem have been taken into consideration. First, several image processing algorithms were studied to find the most suitable technique to separate the projected overlapped particle images for narrow sized particles. These image segmentation algorithms include two-dimensional thresholding, edge detection and Watershed discrimination techniques. The other aspect of the overlap problem is related to the determination of the general kernel function for the partial particle images obtained from the projection of the overlapped particle bed. In this regard, a computer simulation technique was applied to mimic the overlapped particle bed for narrow sized particles, then the general kernel functions of the partial particle images were determined.

Excessive emissions of methane from the coal seams can have a serious adverse effect on both safety and productivity of longwall coal faces. Mechanization of coal faces has increased production possibilities to the extent that normal ventilation systems may not be able to ventilate coal face areas in order to lower methane content in the air to within legal limits. Production increases may therefore be prohibited for this reason, especially in gassy seams. Methane drainage from the coal seam by means of long holes and before production starts can act as a useful remedial action. In this paper a two dimensional mathematical model has been produced. The model that is based on finite elements, simulates a methane drainage system where the resultant risk is linked to the coefficient of diffusion, coal permeability, holes pattern and the duration for which the seam is subject to drainage. It is concluded that methane drainage of this type can assist in achieving production increases in many coals seems, especially where high gas content is a virtue of the seam.

Rock melting technology can provide in-situ glass liners in nuclear waste package emplacement holes to reduce permeability and increase borehole stability. Reduction of permeability would reduce the time and probability of groundwater contacting the waste packages. In-creasing the stability of the storage boreholes would enhance the retrievability of the nuclear waste packages. The rock melting hole forming technology has already been tested in volcanic tuff similar to the geology at the proposed nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada.

The Alligator Ridge mine is a near-surface gold mine located in a remote area 113 km (70 miles) northwest of Ely, NV. The deposit was discovered in 1976 by a lone prospector working under a grubstake contract for Amselco Minerals Inc. Evaluation of mine potential proceeded quickly. Favorable drilling results led to feasibility and mine design studies by the end of 1978. Mine construction began in early 1980. By September of that year, the process plant was fully operational. The first gold was poured a few months later. Alligator Ridge is designed to produce 1.9 t (60,000 oz) of gold each year. The projected mine life, based on proven reserves, is to mid-1988. However, Amselco is actively conducting exploration nearby for additional reserves to extend the mine's life. Amselco, a subsidiary of the British Petroleum Co., is based in Denver, CO. The company is mine operator and jointly owns the project with Nerco Minerals Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Pacific Power and Light. Alligator Ridge is Amselco's first US mining operation. Geology Alligator Ridge, so named because it appears in outline to be an alligator at rest, contains disseminated micron gold embedded in iron-streaked siltstones. Although definitive conclusions have not been drawn on age and origin, the gold ore bodies are probably young by geological standards. They were formed in a recent volcanic period still evidenced in parts of Nevada by geysers and hot springs. As these superheated solutions rose through the permeable siltstones, they deposited minerals in the rock and formed the present gold ore bodies. During 1977, an extensive soil geochemical sampling program with additional geologic mapping and outcrop sampling were conducted. The results generated several drill targets. Initial drilling was performed in November and December 1977, and ore grade mineralization was encountered in the first drill hole. The Alligator Ridge mine is unusual in relation to other and more recent western US mineral discoveries in that it occupies an area that had no previous mining history. The ore deposits are hosted in upper Paleozoic sedimentary rocks that consist predominantly of a thick carbonate sequence. The main ore host is the Devonian-Mississippian Pilot shale, which occurs locally as a sequence of thin bedded calcareous, carbonaceous siltstones and claystones. The maximum observed thickness of the Pilot section in the mine area is about 140 m (460 ft). Rocks in the Alligator Ridge area have been folded into a series of low amplitude anticlines and synclines that strike north-south and plunge to the south at about 20°, with limbs that dip nearly 20°. The folds have been truncated and deformed by later high-angle faults that generally strike northwest. Although multiple stages of movement are evident on the fault systems, the youngest period of activity is along the major northeast trend. The predominant structural pattern in the area is of the basin- and range-type high angle normal faults. Alligator Ridge is actually a horst block between two basin and range faults. Vantage Ore Deposits There are three principal ore deposits within the Vantage Basin and several smaller satellite mineralized areas. The three Vantage deposits are encompassed in a mineralized zone that covers an area 915 m (3,000 ft) long and 305 m (1,000 ft) wide. All mineralized zones have been outlined by more than 600 rotary drill holes, with an average depth of 150 m (500 ft). Mineralization occurs in both carbonaceous and oxidized rocks. The carbonaceous gold-bearing material is not amenable to current heap leaching practice. Therefore, only oxidized ores are now treated. The carbonaceous gold-bearing material is segregated and stockpiled as it is encountered during mining. During the next 15 years, US coal production is expected to double, with the increased production evenly divided between the East and the West. Along with greater production, coal export markets should increase dramatically from East, West, and Gulf Coast ports. The annual overseas export capacity of US coal-loading terminals is expected to rise from 147.1 Mt (162.1 million st) in 1981 to a minimum of 278.1 Mt (306.6 million st) in 1985, according to the US Maritime Administration. Increased coal production and use will lead to more development of import and export terminals, a vital link in the coal transportation chain. With continually escalating capital costs and the competitive markets that the terminals will serve, a well designed and efficient terminal is necessary. This article begins a two-part series that presents concepts presently used in coal export terminal design. Part I looks at site selection factors and equipment needs, while Part II will examine environmental considerations in building a terminal as well as typical capital and operating costs. The world is nearing the end of the oil era. In a few years oil will not be available to sustain the growth rate and increasing standard of living we have known in our lifetime. The big question is what energy era are we moving into? With the decline of readily available oil reserves and rapidly increasing prices, many countries are trying to switch to alternate energy forms. While intensive efforts to find new oil reserves continue, alternate energy sources such as natural gas, coal, synthetic fuels, nuclear, hydroelectric, solar, and wind power are being developed. Recent indications are that coal is expected to bridge the energy gap over the next 25-30 years until the technology and economics of the alternate energy forms reach satisfactory levels. Use of coal for energy is receiving strong attention due to its long-term availability (200-300 years minimum), relative ease of development, and its low cost per unit of power produced. By the year 2000, it is expected that 25% of world energy supply will be met by direct coal combustion and possibly another 5-10% by synthetic fuel from coal. Coal's expanding share in the world energy market, along with an increase in coking coal requirements, will result in a large increase in the world's seaborne coal trade. Recent statistics and projections for the future are shown in Table 1. This phenomenal development rate includes increases in both coking and thermal coal requirements. Because of the rapid increase of seaborne coal trade during the last 10 years and the even greater projected increase of trade to 2000, various sectors of the coal industry are faced with enormous technical challenges and huge investments in equipment, land, transportation systems, and port facilities. Very large bulk terminals are under development throughout the world. Latest surveys indicate that there are about 30 new coal export and import terminals under consideration and at least 30 existing terminals have expansion programs planned or underway. With the high cost of borrowed capital and rapid inflation rates there is great emphasis on new planning and design techniques to minimize capital and operating costs of coal transportation systems. Terminals A total coal supply system can be considered to consist of one or more mines; a train, barge, truck, or other haulage system; an export terminal; a fleet of bulk carriers; a receiving terminal; and possibly, local inland distribution networks that include barges and railways. Terminals, though only a small link in the total transportation system, play a key role in overall system efficiency. At ports or inland distribution centers, terminals act as transportation links bringing trains, ships, barges, or trucks together for cargo transfer and temporary storage. A well-designed terminal can provide maximum independence between two modes of transportation and optimum freedom for intermodal interference. A terminal acts as a buffer between the two transportation modes by providing sufficient storage capacity so a ship need not wait for its cargo on, for example, a train-by-train basis, but can load immediately from the ready stock. Similarly, a train need not wait for a ship to unload its contents but can dump immediately into storage. The folded Appalachians are a physiographic province of eastern North America extending from Nova Scotia to Alabama. The province strikes through the state of Pennsylvania (see Fig. 1) comprising roughly 20 percent of the state and it is here that the focus of this paper will attend. The province is a thick sedimentary sequence which was compressed into a folded mountain belt by the Appalachian Orogeny which terminated at the end of the Permian. The stratigraphy contains both carbonate and non-carbonate rocks as a reflection of the depositional environment at any specific time and place during the Paleozoic geosynclinal accumulation. Although a great deal of variety and difference exists in the geology from one end to another, a common thread of structural and stratigraphic style exists. Carbonate rocks, limestones and dolomites, comprise a substantial percentage of the total Appalachian stratigraphy and are interbedded with clastic materials such as sandstones, siltstones, and shales. The carbonate rocks are extensively mined and collectively represent a vast economic resource.

We at Colowyo would like to thank you for the opportunity to share with the Society of Mining Engineers of A.I.M.E. the progress of reclamation at Colowyo Coal Company's multiple seam open pit coal mine which is a general partnership of W.R. Grace and Co., and the Hanna Mining Co. First, a brief history of Colowyo Coal Company (Colowyo). The Colowyo operation is located approximately 28 miles southwest of Craig, Colorado, which is in the northwest corner of the state. The Colowyo operation produces coal from a Federal Coal Lease, a portion of which has experienced previous coal mining by underground methods. The underground coal mines were known as the Red Wing Mine and The Streeter Mine, and supplied coal to numerous locations in the Rocky Mountain region.
