INTRODUCTION Only in recent years have the environmental hazards associated with mining and tunneling operations been fully acknowledged and determined remedial action undertaken. The nature of these excavation operations leads to a wide diversity of hazards spanning mechanical, electrical, chemical, environmental, and physiological. The most insidious of these are unquestionably the environmental ones which have the greatest long-term effect and are the most difficult to pinpoint and monitor. It is the atmospheric contaminants that lead to a significantly greater illness and mortality rate among miners. Dust is the most prevalent, hence most important of the atmospheric contaminants. Respirable particles lead to diseases characteristic of many mining operations: coal workers pneumoconiosis, asbestiosis, silicosis, talcosis, anthrocosis, etc. But toxic and suffocating gases can be equally insidious and the most innocuous pollutant, methane, leads to the most imminently disastrous results of all - explosion and fire. This means that truly effective monitoring of the environmental hazards in tunneling cannot be limited to a few simple standard check measurements. It must include the most precise measurements we can make for specific, documented hazards and even for factors, such as noise and heat stress, not immediately obvious as hazards. The Federal Metal and Nonmetallic Mine Safety Act and more recent Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards are clearly designed to match such effective monitoring. The Mount Gunnison No. 1 Mine of the West Elk Coal Company (wholly owned subsidiary of ARCO Coal) had secured contracts to provide low sulfur, high Btu steam coal to various utility companies. This called for the development of the B-Seam at the Mount Gunnison Mine located some 400 feet below the operating F-Seam workings being mined with conventional room and pillar techniques. The B-Seam, to meet production goals, will be mined by a new 600-foot longwall machine making a 13-foot high cut. American Mine Services was awarded a competitively bid contract to drive two 2000-foot, 13-foot by 16-foot slopes at -15 percent, sink a 16-foot diameter ventilation shaft 400 feet between the F- and B-Seams, install a 60-inch conveyor in one of the slopes, remove 7000 feet of existing conveyor and rehabilitate 7000 feet in two entries to accommodate the placement of the longwall machinery. The slope portals were located 7000 feet in by the surface portal. Unique to the project was the placement of work shops and other infrastructure 7000 feet underground with an entry height of 6 feet. The $7 million contract was completed in less than one year using a mix of permissible (Schedule 31) and standard (Schedule 24) LHD equipment, all pneumatic jumbos and shaft sinking gear.

The Acid Drainage Technology Initiative (ADTI) was initiated in 1995 by federal agencies, the National Mining Association and the Interstate Mining Compact Commission to identify, evaluate and develop cost- effective and practical acid drainage technologies. In 1999 ADTI was expanded through the addition of the metal mining sector group, which began organization efforts in 1998. ADTI addresses drainage quality issues involving metal mining and related metallurgical operations and acid drainage from coal mines, for abandoned, active, and future mines. ADTI is a technology development program. It is not a regulatory or policy development program. The guiding principle of ADTI is to build a consensus among industry, federal and state regulatory agencies. ADTI is focusing these efforts on technology development and technology transfer in the areas of mine drainage sampling/monitoring, prediction, avoidance/remediation and modeling.

This report refers to the Chicago Deep Tunnel Contract 13A, which was the first contract let in the City of Chicago requiring the construction of deep drop shafts for the transportation of high level sewage to the deep tunnel system. The basic contract required the contractor to construct certain drop shafts designed to deliver surface and high level sewage to the deep tunnel system approximately two hundred feet below. The design of the drop shafts was in a degree affected by their proximity to the existing deep tunnel. The tunnel, approximately three and one-half miles long, was to have five shafts dropping sewage at five locations. Four of the drops were approximately one-half mile apart and spaced from the dead end of the tunnel. One shaft divided the remaining two miles from the existing work shaft at the southeast end of the tunnel wherein a 220' deep pumping station was to be built. The existing tunnel had been built some time previously and all dewatering had stopped, allowing the tunnel and main shaft to fill with water. According to the plans, the drop shafts were all between fifty and ninety feet north or south of tunnel center line, and located in heavily built-up residential and industrial property. This then defines the problems: How do we control the water. If we excavate from the top down, how do we handle the slurry and the muck from five locations. An overview presentation of the fast-track start up of Cerro Colorado, a new copper heap leach project in Chile's Atacama' desert. A brief explanation 'of location of the property, exploration history, geol-ogy, reserves and development are presented. The overview includes mining, crushing, agglomeration, and the solvent extraction-electrowinning recovery process. Challenges and requirements specific to heap leach systems will be addressed and analyzed. A detailed description will be given of the mobile heap leach conveying and stacking systems used in the building of heaps for on-and off-pad operations.

INTRODUCTION The first phase of the Los Angeles Metro Rail Project consists of 7.1 km of subway and stations running through downtown Los Angeles from Union Station to MacArthur Park. Contract A146, Tunnels from 5th/HILL Station to 7th/Flower Station, involves tunnel construction through the heart of downtown Los Angeles. The alignment of the tunnels passes beneath twelve buildings, ranging from a 3-story below grade parking structure to numerous 12 to 14 story buildings. The soil along the alignment is alluvium, consisting of silts and clays, clean sands and gravels located above the ground water table. Because of unstable ground conditions, which led to excessive ground losses in several instances, and because of the potential for excessive building settlements, it became necessary to design and perform a program of chemical grouting. The chemical grouting program was designed such that tunneling could proceed on a one shift per day basis, with chemical grounting being performed on the remaining two shifts. Each day 21,000 to 31,000 liters of sodium silicate grout were injected through sleeveport grout pipes installed 18 m deep through the tunnel face. Tunnel advance rates of 12 m per day, 60 m per week, under full chemical grout cover were achieved. The chemical grouting program virtually eliminated both ground loss and settlement and permitted successful excavation of the tunnels. In 1989, worldwide total mineral industry activity registered advances from 1988. The advances may not have been as noteworthy as in 1988, but they can be regarded as a worthy theme for this article. The momentous political events throughout the centrally planned economy world had only a modest impact on actual 1989 industry performance. But these events have such potential for worldwide changes in economic activity in future years that they dwarf the actual happenings of 1989 in the minerals industry. Perhaps most significant factor here is the rapidity with which these changes have occurred. The end of World War II saw the almost immediate division of the world into major economic blocs. Since then, mineral industry activities and other industrial operations have been governed, to a considerable extent, by this partitioning. The developed market economy nations have operated as a group, the centrally planned economy states as another group. And these two groups essentially have vied for recognition in mineral industry operations in the developing economy states of Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The boundaries of these country blocs were fixed in the late 1940s and early 1950s. They were not markedly altered in the ensuing 40 years. We have seen the establishment of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, the continued Arab-Israeli confrontations in the Near East, the upheavals surrounding the rise of Moslem Fundamentalism in Iran, and the establishment of Soviet-oriented governments in Cuba and Nicaragua. These events have had notable effects on the world economy. But they have done little to change the pattern of market economy states functioning as a competitive bloc with the centrally-planned economy countries.

This paper describes the development of a Windows-based interactive mine ventilation simulation software program at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). To enhance the operation of the underground ventilation system, Westinghouse Electric Corp. developed a program called WIPPVENT. While WIPPVENT includes most of the functions of the commercially available simulation program VNETPC from Mine Ven- tilation Services Inc. and uses the same subroutine to calculate airflow distributions, the user interface was completely rewritten as a Windows application with screen grap-hics. WIPPVENT is designed to interact with WIPP ventilation-monitoring systems through the sitewide central monitoring system. Data (e.g., air quantity and differential pressure) can be continuously collected from the underground ventilation remote-monitoring and control system and from the mine's weather stations (psychrometric data). Furthermore, WIPPVENT incorporates regulator characteristic curves specific to the site. The program utilizes this data to create and continuously update a real-time ventilation model. This paper discusses the design, the key features and the interactive capabilities of WIPPVENT.

Arapiraca ore deposit has a mixed chalcopyritelbornite mineralogy, with a copper head grade of 0.7%. The reserve size does no allow profitable exploration by grinding/flotation. The technical feasibility of exploring the reserve by heap leaching was studied. Preliminary agitation tests indicated 85% copper recovery. To simulate heap leaching, column tests were performed. The tests included different ore types and acid addition levels. Operating at pH range 1.6-1.8, 67% copper extraction was achieved. Also, it was found an empirical correlation between the operation pH range, copper extraction and acid consumption.

Falconbridge Limited is developing a major nickel mine at Craig which lies between 600 m, 915 m and 1500 m below surface and is accessed on the 600 m and 1250 m levels of Onaping Mine. To supply adequate ventilation for mine development and initial ore production, two raises, 1200 m long are to be driven in norite and granitic gneiss. Falconbridge has purchased a Robbins 97RL Raise Drill and a string of 330 mm drill pipe to ream these raises in 600 m legs at diameter. The paper describes the introduction of deep hole, large diameter raise boring technology into Falconbridge operations involving contractors and specialists in the technology.

The use of a laboratory-scale magnetic fluid-based separator for coal separations was examined. A Frantz laboratory magnetic separator was modified by fabricating new pole pieces of the appropriate geometry to provide the proper magnetic field gradients. Two separation chambers, which were constructed out of Plexiglas, were designed to fit between the pole pieces. A commercially available, water-based, ferro-magnetic fluid was used as the separating medium. The separating density was changed by varying the intensity of the electromagnet. Both batch and continuous separations were made using 0.59x0.50 and 0.18x0.15 mm coal. The results are compared to those obtained using organic liquids.

Biohydrometallurgica1 processes in the areas of coal desulfurization (Hoffman, M.R., et al., 1981) and recovery of metals from metal sulfide ores (Lundgren, D.G. and Malouf E.E., 1983) are well known. In addition other areas of potential interest to the mining industries have been outlined (Spisak, J.F., 1979). For instance, scientists involved in this interdisciplinary field have endeavored to apply microorganisms to the problem of effluent sulfate disposal. This chapter assesses the feasibility of utilizing a particular two stage anaerobic microbial process to convert effluent sulfate to orthorhombic sulfur. Strong emphasis is given to the possibility of substituting this bioprocess for alternative gypsum synthesis and disposal methodologies commonly practiced by companies which emphasize sulfuric acid or ammonium sulfate leaching processes.

It is shown that dewatering of fine coal particles (D50 : 21 microns) is enhanced near the point of zero charge. The coal surface is modified by the addition of copper ions and adjusting pH to precipitate surface active metal hydroxy species which promote agglomeration and produce low moisture cakes. Filtration kinetics data are used in calculating filter cake parameters from an integrated form of Darcy's law. The influence of copper ions and pH on filter cake parameters and correlations among them are presented.

This paper describes the development and testing of the RAMEX excavation system. Incorporating a synergy of low velocity, high energy impact and kerf cutting, this machine offers a competitive alternative to drilling and blasting in hard rock. It is a boom mining machine that incorporates the features of a lightweight roadheader and it can mine nearly any shape opening in hard rock. The RAMEX Tunneler has been developed to satisfy industry demands for a non-explosive, flexible, continuous and rapid underground rock excavation system. It will produce minimum ground vibration in the urban environment and allow the flexibility necessary for thin seam mining conditions. It will also reduce initial ground support costs and has a minimum impact on rock integrity. Developed by RAMEX Systems with cooperative research provided by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, this system, could produce the next step in the continuing evolution of mechanical mining systems.

Rather than reiterate what is well known about the flotation of the non-sulfide minerals, emphasis has been placed on those separations which are not so effective. These difficult separations are largely connected with problems of selectivity in the flotation of the base metal oxides, the other slightly soluble minerals, the insoluble oxides and the naturally floatable minerals. INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Reclamation is conducting a research program to investigate, develop, and test polymer-impregnated concrete tunnel support and lining systems for gravity flow, circular cross-section water conveyance tunnels. This system consists of segmented precast rings, backfilled with concrete. Polymer-impregnated concrete is conventional precast concrete which has been impregnated with a liquid monomer. The liquid monomer is subsequently converted to a polymer by thermal-catalytic or radiation methods. The polymer is a solid plastic which fills voids and microfractures within the concrete, resulting in greatly improved strength and modulus of elasticity and reduced permeability, which in turn increases the durability of the concrete. The immediate goals of the program are to develop techniques for the fabrication of precast concrete segments, test single segments to determine physical and mechanical properties, assemble the segments into a support and lining system, load and test the full-scale system, evaluate specific applications, and develop design criteria and construction procedures. Dust produced during blasting in a copper/nickel based mine was studied and characterized. A stope utilizing the crater blasting technique, or the vertical retreat mining (VRM method), was examined. Two dust monitors were used to measure an airborne dust produced during blasting operations. The data collected in situ was primarily used to formulate the boundary value problem for a generalized equation that describes the transportation process of airborne dust from all places where dust is produced by the VRM mining method. The field data was also used to define the analytical forms for the initial and boundary conditions, to provide a simple and reliable equation for flow of dust in a stope vicinity, and to identify the non-measurable constants. The effects of the amount of blasting material and of the ventilation system in use on dust concentration are also discussed.

In relation with the construction of the Sölk power station in Steiermark, Austria, tenders were called in October, 1976, for the construction of the 12-km "Donnersbach collector tunnel" by "Steirische Wasserkraftund Elektrizitäts AG". The specified showed both conventional blast tunneling as well as mechanical excavation with a tunneling machine, diameter 3.55 m. Total construction time from the date of the invitation to tender was given as 4 years. Part of the project was the construction of a concrete circular tunnel lining 20 cm thick. In 1977 the contract was awarded to "Arbeitsgemeinschaft Donnersbach", a joint venture formed by two companies, G. Hinteregger & Söhne, Salzburg, and G. Hinteregger, Bregenz. It provided for the project to be carried out with a tunnel boring machine. GEOLOGICAL DATA The entire tunnel was to be bored through a complex of the garnet mica schist group of the Wölz schists formations. These range from highly quartz-bearing to quartzitic mica schists, with thick, discordantly interstratified beds of marble and dolomite.
