There are many methods available for the estimation of geologic parameters (Popoff, 1966; Barnes, 1980). In the last decade a new and relatively sophisticated technique using statistical theory has emerged: geostatistical kriging (David, 1977; Journal and Huijbregts, 1978; Rendu, 1978). An interesting property of geostatistical estimation is that when a geologic parameter is estimated for a given volume, not only is the estimate generated but an associated measure of certainty is produced as well. This statistical measure of estimation confidence is called the estimation variance. While the concept of an estimation variance is universally considered to be a good idea, mining engineers and geologists do not currently have the tools to incorporate it into their planning and quantitative analysis. This paper attempts to develop and present some of the necessary tools required to incorporate estimation uncertainty into mine planning. Geologic uncertainty is portrayed as an economic business risk. This risk is objectively characterized, and-the associated cost is quantified. Geologic delineation sampling is viewed in this light as an economic commodity with an associated cost and value. A coal mine planning example is used as a focus in this presentation. The data used is real, though it has been modified to maintain data security and project anonymity.

Ground water can pose major engineering and environmental problems to the new generation of large, deep gold mines currently being developed throughout the world. It is important that the potential magnitude of these problems be assessed early in the planning of such projects and that any necessary dewatering and environmental remediation programs be designed at least preliminarily in the feasibility stage. The assessment should begin with acquisition of hydrogeologic data during exploration drilling and be followed by carefully designed and analyzed aquifer tests. Once a sufficiently detailed conceptual hydrogeologic model has been defined, state-of-the-art numerical models should be used to estimate ground-water inflows to proposed pits and underground openings, to design and evaluate the potential effects of various dewatering schemes, to define specific environmental impacts, and to predict pore pressures in highwalls relative to slope stability. The modeling results will indicate which method(s) of dewatering will be most effective both technically and economically. If wells are used, it is imperative that they be as hydraulically efficient as possible. There are new methods of drilling and completing dewatering wells that can help assure maximum efficiency.

Attrition of activated carbon in either the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) or carbon-in-leach (CIL) method of gold extraction can lead to, at the least, loss of expensive carbon that has to be made up, and at the worst, loss of both the carbon and any gold that was attached to it. Carbon attrition therefore represents a significant factor in both the efficiency and cost of the extraction process, and efforts to reduce attrition through process and equipment selection pay dividends. In evaluating carbon attrition potential, one would note that an individual carbon particle is in jeopardy virtually any time it is in motion. Since the motivators of this motion are primary centrifugal pumps, the purpose of this paper is to review the current styles of these pumps now in use and to examine their performance in minimizing carbon attrition.

Gold in many ores occurs in sulphides, which, if the gold is finely disseminated, renders the ore refractory and therefore not amenable to the simple process of milling and cyanidation. Traditional methods of treatment of these refractory ores is to produce a sulphidic flotation concentrate which is roasted to form a porous calcine from which the gold is recovered by cyanidation. The roasting process imposes a constraint of a minimum sulphur grade of the concentrate on the flotation plant, which may lead to a lower gold recovery being achieved in the flotation section. Thermal decomposition of the concentrate by roasting means that the sulphur contained therein has to be treated and disposed of in an environmentally acceptable manner; and, if arsenopyrite is present in the concentrate the environ- mental aspects will be worsened. It has long been recognized that finer milling of gold-bearing materials improves the liberation of gold, especially when the gold particles are very fine. After extensive laboratory and pilot plant investigations (Liddell, Patents), a suitable mill has been developed for the mining industry by Metprotech, which is capable of producing very fine grinds (down to 90 percent passing one m if necessary). In the course of the investigations it has been found that a large number of gold-bearing materials are amenable to fine milling. A specific advantage that fine milling of sulphidic materials has over oxidative processes such as roasting and bacterial leaching is that the sulphides are not decomposed and there is therefore not a sulphur disposal problem. Furthermore, the milled sulphides can become a future sulphur feed source, and can be reclaimed if necessary. A further feature of the Metprotech process is that it is possible to add cyanide to the mill feed

Controlling worker dust exposure on longwall mining systems is difficult because the working face area serves as an immediate return during the mining cycle and the amount of airborne dust generated is directly related to production. Since improvements in longwall mining technology have significantly boosted production levels, additional technology is needed to control the airborne respirable dust generated at present and future production levels. One concept to reduce longwall worker's dust exposure is to maintain two splits of air at the face -- a clean intake split in the workers walkway, and a return (dusty) split over the face conveyor. The U. S. Bureau of Mines has recently investigated a concept to overcome the visibility handicap of face partitions by utilizing a permeable polyester mesh. The mesh material was anticipated to provide adequate air-splitting capabilities as long as the pressure differential between the face and worker walkway was minimal. Initial testing of this concept at the Bureau's Lake Lynn Laboratory showed that notable reductions could be achieved with a 1/8 in (3.18 mm) and 1/16 in (1.59 mm) mesh opening size. Dust reductions at 100 ft (30.5 m) and 200 ft (61.0 m) downstream of source were 58 and 36 pct, respectively, for the 1/8 in mesh and 79 and 55 pct, respectively for the 1/16 in mesh. Longwall application of the 1/8 in mesh showed similar results to the Lake Lynn Laboratory tests. A flame retardant mesh was used underground with portable lighting mounted on the shearing machine for face side lighting.

If you have ever driven on the Autobahns of Western Germany, you are well acquainted with the "fast lane." There is no speed limit; there are only two lanes in the direction you are going, and if you choose to drive in the fast lane, you had better be prepared to drive faster than anyone or someone will tailgate you with a constant screeching horn until you move to the "slow lane." The prize for this mastery of the fast lane is some kind of a "macho" feeling and getting to your destination sooner than your competitor. This has some comparisons with today Is liquid-sol id separation. We've certainly had our moments in the fast lane but we've also had other countries forcing us into the slow lane at times. It can be very embarassing when someone almost runs over your back and then shakes a fist at you as you shakily scatter to the much slower and overcrowded lane. Because of necessity, there will be many new improvements and added requirements in the next decades into the 21st century and beyond. Those countries and industries that can maintain the pace in the fast lane will be successful while the others may well be relegated to the non-competitive lane. Before considering what will be the challenges in the future for competitive liquid-sol id separation performance, it would be wise to review progress over the past forty years in this area. The author has to admit his ancient age and believes he can act as an evaluator of these many advances. The Upshur Complex of Island Creek Coal Corp. consists of approximatly 35.000 acres of both surface and deep mine researves located in Upshur County West Virginia. The principle seams on the researve are the Middle and Lower Kittanning. Other mining in the area during the late 1960's and early 1970's produced surface mines that exhibited severely acidic drainage characteristics both during the mining phase, and after reclamation was completed. The Buckhannon River, the principal drainage for the area, is a high quality, lightly buffered stream, that is periodically stocked with trout. Because past mining had caused post mining acidic discharges and the Buckhannon River was a valuable recreational resource, mining permits for the area were put on hold by regulatory authorities, until solutions to the acid mine drainage questions could be addressed. In 1978, the director of the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources appointed a Task Force consisting of Industry, Regulatory. and Academlc participants. This Task Force was charged with gathering information and evaluating field procedures used during mining to prevent acidic mine drainage. In 1979, the group published a document titled "Suggested Guidelines for Mining in Potentially Acid Producing Overburdens" which summarized material handling and mining procedures that could be employed to help prevent the occurrence of post mining acid mine drainage. In 1982, a Technical Advisory Committee was appointed consisting of well known researchers in the field of acid mine drainage prediction and prevention. The group was charged with the task of conducting research in the field of acid mine drainage prevention. Mining conducted at the Upshur Complex between 1979 and 1986 employed various acid mine drainage preventative techniques recommended in the suggested guidelines manual and techniques concurrently being researched by the Technical Advisory Committee. Costs for the various techniques were documented and the resulting post-mining water monitored. The results of these evaluations are used by Island Creek in the planning of future mining operations in potentially acid prodcuing environments

A geostatistical approach is proposed for the design of infill drilling programs. The method consists of the following four major steps: developing geological favorability models, delineating mineralization and ore envelopes, classifying resource potentials, and designing infill drilling patterns. Geological modeling develops the permissible geological zones in which infill drilling is designed. Modeling mineralization and ore envelopes establishes criteria on the potential blocks to be drilled. The blocks that are included within the ore envelopes are considered in the infill drilling. The following four types of resource potentials are used in this analysis: measured, indicated, possible and barren. Blocks in the indicated category are the top targets to be confirmed in infill drilling. Blocks of possible resources may be considered exploration targets. The algorithms involved in the analysis include indicator favorability analysis, indicator kriging and ordinary kriging. A case study on a gold deposit of the Carlin type is presented to demonstrate the methodology. The deposit was originally delineated by a sparse drilling program with about 230ft of average spacing. The infill drilling design, based on the new method, suggests a significant reduction on the number of holes from a regular-grid infill drilling pattern.

Some basic terms used in cost management and accounting include: - Cost. A sacrifice made to acquire goods or services, measured by the price paid. Technically, the sacrifice is called a cost until the benefits from the goods or services have expired, at which time the sacrifice is called an expense. In this text, the terms "cost" and "expense" are used interchangeably. - Revenue. An increase in the value of the firm resulting from the sales of goods and services. - Income. The excess of revenues over costs for a specified period. The term is often used with modifiers to indicate specific quantities on an income statement (e.g., pretax income; net income). - Activity. A measure of production work. Traditionally, physical production volume (tons of ore or units of product) has been used as the measure of activity. Other measures include direct labor hours, equipment operating hours, and quantity of materials or supplies consumed. - Responsibility center. A segment of an organization that is responsible for a specified set of activities. In mining, individual operating divisions can be treated as responsibility centers, known as profit or cost centers. Departments within a division are generally treated as cost centers. - Cost center. A portion of an organization having responsibility for achieving specified levels of cost. - Profit center. A portion of an organization having responsibility for achieving specified levels of profit (revenues and costs).

Wastes related to abandoned mine sites can constitute important potential pollution sources, depending on their mineralogical and geochemical characteristics and volume. Mine waste disposal sites contain a diverse variety of wastes including overburden material and waste rocks, the ore which cannot be economically removed and wastes from the smelting processes when they are accomplished at the mine site. These materials are usually heterogeneous in size, mineralogy and metal concentrations. Asturias, in northern Spain, has an extensive mining history and, in consequence, there are abundant unreclaimed and derelict mine sites with abandoned mines and spoil heaps of different age, morphology, content and dimensions. In these spoil heaps, waste materials are subjected to the intense action of a humid environment, so the instability of sulphides and sulpharsenides results in the production of acid and metal-rich leachates, which are incorporated to surface water or infiltrated through the land reaching groundwater bodies. The mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of the stored materials are key data to evaluate if they represent an environmental risk. Mineralogy and geochemistry of wastes and the particular specific environmental conditions of each site affect the rate of weathering and therefore the metal release. The characterisation of mine wastes is a necessary step in order to establish suitable assessment strategies with the aim of reducing the leaching, transport and widespread of ecotoxic elements from mining wastes to the environment (surface water, sediments, soils and air). As a consequence of the weathering of As-rich mineral phases, high arsenic contents are commonly detected in effluents from mine voids and spoil heap leachates.

Canadian junior mining companies whose gold exploration and exploitation programs take them across the border into the western United States should be prepared to deal with the myriad of title issues involved in acquiring unpatented gold mining claims. The purpose of this paper is to serve as an introductory outline for Canadian junior mining companies to mining laws of the United States, as well as to relevant laws of some of the western gold mining states. Topics will include the five w's (who, where, what, why and when) of Canadian junior mining companies1 rights and responsibilities in acquiring interests in U.S. gold mining properties by claim staking, lease or purchase. Historic terms of common parlance among U.S. miners, such as "claimjumping" are defined and discussed. Various legal doctrines, such as "pedis possessio" and "good faith" in the location of claims are covered as well. Controversial subjects of contemporary interest are addressed in some detail, such as whether to locate a bulk-mineable disseminated gold deposit with placer claims or lode claims, and whether lodes may be staked over placers. By thus heightening the awareness of Canadian junior mining companies, it is hoped that they can be properly prepared to avoid title disputes, and to win lawsuits when they are unavoidable.

The ultimate objective of the development work presented in the paper is to devise an appropriate method for relating powered support specification to geological conditions and mining practice, thus enabling the longwall method of coalmining to be successfully implemented throughout the varied coalfields of the world. The paper begins with a review of various methods previously used to determine support rating, each method being analysed with regard to its source, the logic and theory which constitute the method, and subsequent recommendations. An alternative approach is then proposed, the Powered supports being considered to be one of three foundations, sharing load with coal ahead of the faceline which acts as another foundation, and the waste behind the supports which acts as the remaining foundation. The load/deflection characteristics of the coal and waste, which in turn are related to geological conditions and mining practice, are shown to affect the load transfer on to and hence the specification of the powered support. In particular the characteristic of the waste foundation is shown to be affected by the caving mechanism, an alternative form to that mechanism accepted for British conditions being proposed and designated "parting-plane-controlled" caving. A finite element solution for a beam on elastic foundations was used to translate the above concepts into numerical results, these results being compared with data from Indian and Chinese operating conditions. The Indian case study examines the effect of using a conventional chock type of support in a one-web back mode when mining towards a roof break generated ahead of the face, while the Chinese case study compares measured subsidence over a longwall with "blocky" roof conditions with the model results. The comparisons are encouraging, suggesting that the approach used is worthy of further development.

In today?s mining environment, improving production, performance, productivity and profitability is crucial. Production, ancillary, plant and shipping equipment need to be monitored and controlled by online systems delivering production statistics and real-time information to everyone involved, including equipment operators. Traditional systems currently in use today, operate in an iterative mode constantly switching between scheduling and execution. However, the real world tends to change in ways that invalidate such advance schedules. Agent based computing has been hailed as the most significant breakthrough in software development and the new revolution in software. Agent systems are being used in an increasingly wide variety of applications, including complex mission critical systems such as Air Traffic Control. This paper presents the possible ways that multi-agent systems can be applied to mine production and rehabilitation scheduling problems with focus on real time fleet management, plant and equipment performance monitoring, downtime and delay reporting, stockpile management, personnel and equipment tracking and product distribution and transportation.

In attempting to assess the contributions of Antoine Gaudin to the profession which he illuminated for almost a half-century, we will need to examine a very broad canvas. He was active in three significant areas: as a teacher; in research, both through his own endeavors and those of his students; and as a consultant to the mining industry and to the Government. Beyond these specific contributions, there was the major personal influence he had on scores of students, friends, and colleagues in the profession. If a single measure of the man's contribution is to be found, it will be the extent and direction in which he influenced the practice of his profession. To find this we should examine the state of miner- al processing when he began his activities in the 1920's, the progress which has taken place over the past half-century, and the part his activities played in this advance. However, there is a provocative and broader examination which I have chosen to make instead. This is to examine the past century in mineral processing through the lives of three men who, by common agreement, stand on the heights, both in teaching and in their contributions to industry: Robert H. Richards, Arthur F. Taggart, and the man whose memory we honor this evening, Antoine M. Gaudin. Their careers, by coincidence, cover just a century. This is also AIME's first century, and the first century of mineral industry education in the United States. In fact, mineral processing itself on any significant scale in the country encompasses only a century and a quarter. BEGINNINGS OF PRACTICE IN THE U.S. Before the 1840qs, U.S. mining, except for coal and iron ore, was on a small scale and was confined to the eastern states, with processing practically nonexistent. The 1840's saw the beginning of Michigan native copper production, including ore dressing; the 18501s, iron ore production in Minnesota; and the 18601s, lead production and processing in Missouri. But the most explosive event was the California gold rush after 1848, which not only brought tens-of-thousands of fortune hunters to the West, but also catalyzed broad mining activities and processing within the following decades. The heavy oil reservoirs of Alberta and Saskatchewan include sequences of unconeolidated silts and fine sands which respond in an unusual manner when subjected to the high temperature and pore-fluid-pressure associated with steam injection and other thermal enhanced recovery techniques. Apparent transient connections are suddenly established between producers and injectore and there is an associated enhancement in oil (and sand) production. These phenomena have been attributed to local fluidization and piping processes which are known to occur in situations where high pore-fluid-pressures prevent the mobilization of intergranular friction. These breakdown processes may be associated with the penetration of tongues of the heated reservoir fluids with suspended sand into the creep sensitive intact reservoir since the viscosity ratios are sufficiently high for viscous fingering instability of the fluid-fluid interface. A program of laboratory tests has been carried out to measure the strength characteristic of saturated oil sands at a variety of temperatures and fluid pressures. These tests suggest, that in common with the coarser Athabasca sands, the Waseca sands have very little cohesive strength and show the characteristic dilational failure response of dense sands. Some special tests, devised to determine the relative ease with which samples can be fluidized, confirm the expected susceptibility of the fine- sand silts. Both piping and fluidization can be readily induced at in-situ reservoir temperatures and pressures. Analysis of stresses around wellbores suggests that fluid-pressure gradients may be sufficient to initiate piping and that backward erosion along streamlines may link producers and injectors. Such pipes may act as well “adits” gathering oil from the heated reservoir and contributing to enhanced production rates. Mechanical breakdown of the reservoir by drilling, injection and production processes provides a consistent possible explanation for the sand-cut response of production wells.

Every operation connected with the working of a deep-level mine has, to a greater or lesser extent, a direct bearing on the costs of production, and hence, profitability of the mine. If adequate mine planning is not done in the early stages in the life of a mine, considerable expenditure can result from the cost of maintaining mine service tunnels, production delays in stopes caused by poor strata control, distortion of fittings in hoisting shafts, rockbursts and so on. In fact, the optimum profitability of a deep-level, hard-rock mine can only be achieved if the layout of the shaft systems, ore passes, tunnels, stoping areas and other underground excavations are designed to withstand or accommodate the rock stress conditions that will be created by mining operations. In South Africa where the deepest mines in the world are located, access to the underground workings of most deep-level gold mines is via vertical shaft systems and a network of tunnels connecting the shaft systems to the stoping areas. In current practice, there are two basic methods of extracting the gold-bearing reef,* namely, the scattered stoping method and the longwall stoping method. The choice of the stoping method is governed largely by the anticipated gold distribution and payability of the reef in the area, the geological conditions, the degree and complexity of faulting and dyke intrusions, the depth at which the gold-bearing reef is to be mined and the inclination and width of the reef. The longwall system was first introduced at the East 717 Rand Proprietary Mines Limited in 1942 in an effort to combat the rockburst hazard which appeared to increase with increase in depth. This mining method became standard practice on that mine for stoping operations 700 ft. below the surface. Since that date, several deep mines on the Central Rand, East Rand and West Wits gold mining areas have adopted this method.

Exploration for mineral deposits in the western United States is increasing annually, and the data generated by this effort are increasingly complex, diverse, and abundant. It is obvious that to make full use of this data base, which is both private and public, the technology of the computer must be involved. To lay out the framework for discussion of the particular uses of computers in all steps of exploration, this chapter will discuss the various approaches to the reconnaissance program which might be considered, the types of data to be acquired, the interpretation of these data, and the generation of recommendations based on this interpretation. Where possible, some of those areas where computer technology is now used will be pointed out. The discussion will cover the extent to which the computer is now utilized in those areas or where it should be brought into the program to aid in these activities. However, this chapter will not present an exhaustive evaluation of this technology, but will stress the exploration job and its requirements, so that subsequent discussion of the technology itself can be placed in perspective.

Developing a laboratory procedure for the determination of coal-seam compressive strength has been a subject of discussion for many decades, and the reliability of laboratory determinations is often the subject of debate. A coal seam’s characteristics, the method of sample collection, the specimen preparation method and the testing procedure can often result in drastic variations in the test results. In this paper, the development of a laboratory testing procedure for the determination of coal-seam compressive strength is presented. Two samples that were collected from different coal seams were tested in this study. First, the inherent characteristics, i.e., coal structure. Hardgrove grindability index (HGI), Slake durability index, proximate analysis and mechanical properties (Young's modules and Poisson's ratio), of each coal were determined. The results were used to categorize the coal scams in terms of the characteristics liable to produce variable strength data in typical laboratory tests. Second, two commonly used laboratory specimen shapes, cylindrical and cubical, were tested to determine which shape produced the most reproducible strength values. Third, four loading rates within the static testing range, i.e., 0.007, 0.07, 0.34 and 0.7 MPa/s (1.0, 10, 50 and 100 psi/sec), were used to determine the ideal loading rate. Finally, the number of test samples required to produce strength data within the acceptable standard deviation, considering coal seam characteristics, were established. Background Laboratory testing of coal specimens for the determination of seam compressive strength has been a subject of discussion since the early 1900s. Many researchers have tested coal specimens to estimate coal-seam compressive strength for use in pillar design to insure the safe operation of [ ] mines (Unrug et al., 1986; and Hirt et al.. 1992). Yet, there is a lack of a universal procedure, and, no matter which approach is used, it becomes the subject of intensive debate. A great deal of work has been performed on the subject, and there is much information available in the literature. Some of this work concerns quantifying the influence of specimen shape and size on compressive strength (Bieniawski. 1968: Barron et al.. 1992: Khair and Xu 1994; and Khair 1994). As indicted in the literature, coal is a heterogeneous material, consisting of discontinuities such as cleats and bedding planes, which are likely to produce variable strength results (Holland, 1964; Unrug et al., 1986). Aquifer. A formation, group of formations, or part of a formation that contains sufficient satu rated permeable material to yield significant quan tities of water to wells and springs. Artesian. Conceptual model. A conceptualization of a field hydrogeologic framework that facilitates the development of analytical field testing procedures. The results of the test(s) may force changes in the initial conceptual model. Conductivity, hydraulic. Replaces the term "field coefficient of permeability." The volume of water at the existing kinematic viscosity that will move in unit time under a unit hydraulic gradient through a unit area measured at right angles to the direction of flow, if the porous medium is isotropic and the fluid homogeneous. Confining bed. A body of "impermeable" material stratigraphically adjacent to one or more aquifers; its hydraulic conductivity may range from nearly zero to some value distinctly lower than that of the aquifer. The mechanical energy per unit mass of a fluid at any given point in space and time with respect to an arbitrary state and datum; the fluid potential is proportional to the head. Ground water, confined. Ground water under pressure significantly greater than atmospheric; its upper limit is the bottom of a bed of distinctly lower hydraulic conductivity than that of the material in which the confined water occurs. Ground water, perched. Unconfined ground water separated from an underlying body of ground water by an unsaturated zone. Ground water, unconfined. Water in an aquifer that has a water table. Head, static. Height above a standard datum of the surface of a column of water (or other liquid) that can be supported by the static pressure at a given point. Homogeneity. Hydrogeologic properties are identical everywhere. Hydraulic gradient. Change in static head per unit of distance in a given direction. Hydrostratigraphic unit. A body of material having considerable lateral extent and comprising a geologic framework for a reasonably distinct hydrogeologic system. Isotropy. Surface mining, from ore extraction to processing, requires many types of equipment to obtain the final product. Mine equipment often includes shovels, drills and haul trucks. Ore processing equipment, including plants, mills and concentrators, are also part of surface mining operations. Surface mining operations emphasize production. Production is where the bills are paid and fortunes are made. However, there must be support to keep the equipment operational. To most production people, equipment maintenance is a necessary evil. Maintenance is not glamorous work. It is often neglected when praise is being passed around. It is easy to recognize higher production, greater capacities, faster cycle times or more loads hauled. But who cares if an engine is replaced in 12 hours instead of 48? The answer is, everyone should - from the hourly miner to the mine manager. Surface mining equipment needs constant maintenance work. It must be lubricated, components replaced, electrical problems repaired and other problems addressed. Repair work for any surface equipment takes time away from production. It costs money. Maintenance costs cannot be avoided. However, they can be minimized. Minewide communication should include operations cooperating with maintenance. Traditionally, operations resist surrendering equipment to maintenance if it can continue to produce. The rationale is, every load that can be hauled today is money in the bank. If the unit is taken down, the money is lost. This thinking is prevalent in many surface mining areas, including the mill. "Not on my shift," the operator thinks. "Let the next crew worry about it. The problem with this thinking is in probability and statistics. The longer equipment goes without maintenance work, the higher the probability of equipment failure. When the failure does occur, it is certain to cause the equipment to remain down longer than if the maintenance department had been allowed to take it down. Many mining operations have closed early in their lives because of poor maintenance practices. This has become the industry standard because substandard levels of performance are acceptable. Management believes it gets five to six hours of work from maintenance people during an eight-hour shift. Actually, the industry average is less than two hours of work per shift. Real productivity levels of less than one hour are not unusual. There are few exceptions. However, a daily work schedule (DWS) will increase productivity at many properties by 50% to 100%. A 200% improvement is not unusual. The DWS will work. Maintenance people are among the most intelligent and motivated people on the property. They deserve the chance to be productive. [ ] In preparing a DWS, management needs to understand two productivity principles - the productivity spread and the real maintenance workday.
