"SummaryFor more than a century, ground freezing has been a construction technique used in stabilization of ground by means of lowering the temperature of surrounding soil strata. This technique is used in circumstances where conventional grouting method is unable to achieve the degree of consolidation required to prevent settlement and water ingress during the execution of underground excavation. Whilst ground freezing is effective in imparting self-supporting characteristics to the excavation profile, it poses significant challenges when it comes to the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) where sprayed concrete is used to support the freshly excavated ground. Sprayed concrete, if used in an appropriate manner, provides a fast, efficient and structurally-reliable means of supporting the structure, especially in underground construction. The evolvement in sprayed concrete technology is attributed to the development of concrete know-how, improvement of spraying technique with the use of automation spraying equipment, more in-depth understanding of sprayed concrete behavior and enhancement of materials used in production of high quality sprayed concrete Not only has this markedly escalated the prominence of sprayed concrete on wider perspective,. the positive development has also pushed sprayed concrete beyond its boundaries, enabling it to be embarked on area of application not considered possible decades ago. Nevertheless, sprayed concrete, for all its placement versatility, still depends largely on the technicality provision very similar to concrete to achieve the required quality. Parameters such as raw material grading composition, curing temperature and cement quality are some of the factors that can easily sway the quality of concrete from one extreme to another. Conducive ambient temperature is critical in ensuring optimum hydration of concrete. This is more important in sprayed concrete where temperature plays a pivotal role in influencing the early strength and long term strength development. The low temperature imposed by ground freezing is everything but ideal for competent hydration to take place. This paper outlines how the innovative use of sprayed concrete helps to overcome the adverse ambient temperature in the construction of a 110m underground pedestrian walkway utilizing ground freezing technique in Hong Kong."

INTRODUCTION In Canada, radium-226 is removed from uranium mining and milling effluents by the addition of barium chloride to precipitate barium-radium sulphate. Large settling ponds are provided to effect solid-liquid separation. However, the barium-radium sulphate precipitate [(Ba,Ra)S04] is a fine, slow-settling crystalline solid which is not easily removed by simple sedimentation systems. Consequently, settling pond effluents may contain appreciable quantities of particulate or suspended radium-226, depending upon the specific pond system and/or the time of year considered. Also, current technology is expected to be incompatible with ultimate disposal goals since safe recovery of the barium-radium sulphate sludge from the settling ponds may be difficult to achieve (IAEA, 1976). Under the auspices of Environment Canada, a Government-Industry Mining Task Force established a Radioactivity Sub-Group in 1974 to assist in the development of effluent regulations and guidelines for the uranium mining industry. Among the recommendations of the Sub-Group was the need to seek more effective methods of radium removal, including development of physical--chemical treatment systems as an alternative to settling ponds. In response to the Sub-Group recommendations, a bench scale feasibility study began in March 1976 at the Wastewater Technology Centre (WTC) of Environment Canada. The bench scale work was expanded and accelerated in 1977 with financial assistance provided by the Atomic Energy Control Board. The results of this study indicated that coagulation and flocculation of the (Ba,Ra)S04 precipitate greatly increased settling rates (Wilkinson and Cohen, 1977). Subsequently, a research program with a larger scope was initiated in January 1978; this program is jointly managed and funded by government and industry as indicated in Table 1. The principal goal of the Joint Government-Industry Program is the development of a physical-chemical process to reduce the radium-226 content of uranium mining and milling effluents. The following effluent radium-226 activities were established as targets for the program: 0.37 Bq/L (10 pCi/L) as total radium-226; 0.11 Bq/L (3 pCi/L) as dissolved radium-226. Iodine, a grayish-black nonmetallic element, with a density of 4.9 g/cm3, is a solid at ordinary temperatures. It is a member of the halogen family, along with fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and astatine. Iodine melts at 114°C. and at 184°C it is volatilized to a blue-violet gas that has an irritating odor. It does not occur as an element in nature, but occurs as iodates, iodides, or other combined forms. It is the 47th most abundant element in the earth's crust. Iodine was discovered by Bernard Courtois in 1811. He observed an unknown substance in the crude soda ash that results from the burning of seaweed. Samples of this unknown substance were identified to be a new element, and in 1813 Gay-Lussac named the substance iode, from the Greek word for violet color. The world production during 1989 and 1990 [(Table 1)] is estimated to be about 16 million kg per year (Lyday, 1991), of which about 30% is consumed in the United States. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY Compounds of iodine are minor constituents in seawater and brines, in certain marine organisms, and in minerals of the Chilean nitrate deposits. Seawater contains approximately 0.05 ppm iodine, and certain marine organisms, such as seaweed, sponges, fish, and some brown algae, are able to further concentrate iodine (Lyday, 1989a). Some seaweed can extract and accumulate iodine up to 0.45% of their weight, on a dry basis. The northern Chilean nitrate deposits, in the Atacama Desert, contain the following iodine minerals: lautarite, Ca(I03), (calcium iodate); dietzeite, CaJIO,), (CrO,) (calcium iodate-chromate); and bruggenite, Ca(I03), . H20 (Erickson, 1981). Various subsurface brines also contain iodine compounds. Some gas-field brines in the United States and Japan locally contain 30 to 1 300 ppm iodine. Several coals in Germany also contain iodine compounds. Iodine has been recovered from brines mainly in Japan and the United States, but also in Java, Indonesia, Italy, England, and the former USSR. Iodine has also been recovered from seaweed in Ireland, Scotland, France, Japan, Norway, and the USSR. Seaweed was a major source of iodine for the world in the first half of this century, and it remains as a large resource. The reserves and future resources of iodine are large, even excluding the resources in seaweed and seawater, and are shown in [Table 1]. Analysis Iodine as the free element can be detected by the characteristic blue color it gives to a starch solution. Quantitatively it is determined as the free element by titration with standard thiosulfate solutions using starch as an indicator. Colorimetric methods are also applicable. PRINCIPAL PRODUCING COUNTRIES Major iodine-producing nations are Japan, Chile, the USSR, and the United States, with lesser amounts being produced in China and Indonesia ([Fig. 1; Table 1]). Annual world production in 1989 and 1990, respectively, is estimated at 15.6 and 16 million kg. In Japan and Chile, the production of iodine depends on production of other materials, such as natural gas or nitrates, respectively, whereas in US operations (in Oklahoma) iodine is the major product recovered from natural brines. Chile was for a long time the principal world producer of iodine from its nitrate-fertilizer operations, but in recent years Japan has become the world leader with increased production of natural gas and associated iodine-rich brines.

INTRODUCTION Volcanic tuffs on and adjacent to the Nevada Test Site (NTS) are being considered by the Department of Energy (DOE) for the possible geo- logic disposal of high-level radioactive wastes. The Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations (NNWSI) project was established in 1977 to evaluate such disposal. Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), one of the participants in the NNWSI project, has as one of its responsibilities the development of a rock mechanics program for the Nevada site. SNL conducted three small-diameter heater experiments in welded and nonwelded tuffs in G-Tunnel on the NTS, to investigate the thermal (heat transfer) and hydrothermal (thermal- induced water migration) behavior as part of the rock mechanics program. These two aspects were investigated to increase knowledge about the behavior of tuff so that predictive capabilities are available for use by repository designers, waste-package designers, and performance analysts. Also, knowledge of the behavior of the tuff is invaluable for planning and designing future in situ experiments at Yucca Mountain, the candidate site for the repository. The evaluations of these three experiments is the subject of this paper. Designers, analysts, and experimenters are seeking a better understanding of the behavior of tuffs under the influence of thermal loads expected from radioactive-waste storage, because of two physical features peculiar to tuffs. First, tuffs are inherently porous because of the manner in which they are deposited (Smith, 1960). Tuffs utilized in G-Tunnel testing have porosities ranging from 15 to 46%, which cover the ranges of expected porosities in the target horizon at Yucca Mountain. It has been established that the G-Tunnel tuffs have similar bulk, thermal, and mechanical material properties to those at Yucca Mountain (Zimmerman et al., 1984), thus, G-Tunnel testing can be used to evaluate the effects of porosity on the thermal and mechanical behavior. The second feature is that tuffs above the water table contain pore water that influences the thermal properties of the rock; displacement of the water must be accounted for in repository designs and analyses. For example, G-Tunnel tuffs, located some 600 m above the static water level, have saturations in excess of 60%. Similar percentages are expected at the target horizon in Yucca Mountain (Zimmerman et al., 1984). The presence of and the removal of the pore water affects the thermal behavior of the tuffs, and these three experiments were designed first to determine the phenomenological behavior and then assess influences on predictive capabilities. The focus in this paper is to present the results and evaluations of the experiments as they apply to improving predictive capabilities. The thermal aspects are emphasized by comparing the measured temperatures (in and around heater emplacement holes) with calculations of predicted temperatures using numerical models, so that the effects of significant parameters can be evaluated and integrated into future predictive models. Observation of the hydrothermal aspects is needed to assess the effects of loss of pore water and subsequent migrations on the temperature fields during the heating, and also to define the expected environment in the vicinity of the outer metallic surface around the waste. The metallic boundary can be either the outer shell of the waste package system, which is the main engineered barrier for waste containment, or the borehole liner. A final decision has not been made as yet about the necessity for lining boreholes; thus, the emphasis is on predicting the characteristics of the environment around the outer metallic surface. Although the concept of centrifugal recovery has been around in one form or another for many years, it has not been until recent times that it has become clearly understood and properly put into perspective. Simplistic in theory, it is when one begins to examine the variables involved that the true complexities of this matter begin to emerge. In creating an enhanced g force concentrator, there are many aspects both positive and negative that are encountered. Many conditions that are inherent to all conventional 1 g concentrators do not apply to centrifugal concentrators and therefore very few cm factors exist between them. In developing this technology, virtually all principles were proven by method of trial and error. Among the topics discussed are the effect of g force enhancement on particulate behavior with respect to size and shape, density, enrichment, fluidization, and the "teeter principle". In addition, we will discuss the physical effects of g force enhancement with respect to manufacturing in the areas of abrasion, bearings, and vibration. In discussing the recovery parameters of centrifugal concentrators we will draw direct comparisons to various other recovery methods, outlining the conditions most favorable to their application.

Introduction Asamera Minerals (US) Inc. and its joint venture partner, Breakwater Resources Ltd., discovered ore grade gold mineralization on their 20 km2 (5000 acre) Wenatchee, WA land position in February 1983. Due to the high grade nature of the discovery ore and the known reserves of ore in the "B Reef' and "B West" zones previously outlined by other companies, a decision was made to construct a mine/mill operation near the known ore occurrences. Further drilling in the discovery area quickly expanded known gold occurrences to more than 3.6 Mt (4 million st) with tentative in-place ore grade of 7 g/t (0.25 oz per st) and minor silver values. Based on existing knowledge of the ore body and the rapidly increasing ore reserve, a decision to build a 1.8-kt/d (2000-stpd) mine and mill complex was made in the second quarter of 1983. A schedule was devised to begin immediate mine development, shaft sinking, environmental and land use permitting, and mill and tailings dam construction (Fig. 1). Meeting the scheduled startup date, April 1, 1985, required a fast track schedule in all areas. To this end, Asamera purchased the Oracle Ridge Partners concentrator. This was an assemblage of new equipment designed for use as a copper concentrator in southern Arizona. The purchase contained all of the major mineral dressing equipment - crushers, screens, rod and ball mills, etc. and an engineering package. It did not include most of the other required items, such as buildings, conveyors, pipelines, tanks, and pumps. At the same time, core samples were sent to two independent process development laboratories for initial flowsheet development. Due to the refractory nature of the carbonaceous ore, cyanide leaching was not feasible. Flotation was selected as the concentration process. Further testing showed that autoclaving of the flotation concentrate followed by cyanidation would result in overall recovery of about 85% gold. A mine manager was hired to begin assembling an operations staff, hire an environmental consulting firm, and begin mine development. Environmental and land use concerns were major obstacles due to the mine's close proximity to a city of 20,000 people. These concerns had to be rapidly defined so as to mitigate any adverse impacts from and mining processing operations. Baseline data dealing with weather, air and water quality, and sound were measured before start of mine construction. Concentrator and flowsheet development remained static until October 1983 while definition drilling and mine development proceeded. In late October, a process engineer was hired to coordinate development of a process flowsheet, purchase the remainder of the concentrator equipment, prepare a concentrator construction contract, finalize concentrator detail engineering, and combine environmental and process requirements with a tailings dam design. Process development There were only 17 months remaining to mill start up from the hiring date of the process engineer. Therefore, the process flowsheet had to be finalized rapidly. To accomplish this, samples of drill core from the highest grade (and therefore potentially the most commercial) ore zones were sent to an outside metallurgical laboratory to confirm beneficiation tests on the flotation process. Test results again showed that flotation would provide about an 86% gold recovery. Therefore, all further testing was concentrated on flotation and autoclave/cyanidation of flotation concentrates. Focusing on a well known process such as flotation was important in accomplishing the rapid design and construction of the concentrator. If, during these next phases, we were continually changing design concepts, layout, and process flow, the mill startup would have been delayed many months. Once a process flowsheet is selected the process engineer must obtain the process criteria needed to design the beneficiation system. For example, it was known in early December that the Oracle Ridge rod and ball mills were too small to grind 1.8 kt/d (2000 stpd) of Wenatchee ore. A decision had to be made to purchase a large, used ball mill and convert the Oracle Ridge ball mill to a rod mill. The process engineer must be cognizant of the process criteria needed to size and select equipment. If not, the process engineer must use the professional services of the equipment manufacturing companies to review the requirements that the equipment is asked to perform. For the Wenatchee system, this resulted in the adaptation of a ball mill to a rod mill with a weight limit of grinding rods to protect the mill bearings and drive trains. When a decision is required, the process engineer has to present the facts and options in a manner that allows a rapid decision. This information must include costs, equipment availability, and effect on the construction schedule. At the Cannon mine, there were process development details that resulted in decisions similar to the ball mill purchase. These included an increased flotation residence time from eight to 25 minutes, an increased thickener area requirement, a high pressure tailings pumping system, and area constraints in plant layout. All of these decisions had to be timely and required assistance from manufacturers' service engineers, and knowledge of the alternate costs and effects on construction completion. Recent mining regulations have increased the need for detailed engineering and environmental information pertaining to the hydrogeologic environment in mining areas. The cost of obtaining such hydrogeologic information has also increased. After mineralization of potentially economic grade ore and tonnage has been identified, and after completing preliminary mining feasibility studies (suggesting that development is merited), a second exploration phase can incorporate a simple, cost-effective baseline hydrogeologic data reconnaissance program that is linited but useful. Using exploration drill holes only, this program can provide a direct indication of where ground water is encountered. Also, reasonable estimates can be made on the relative production of water from various water-bearing strata, a composite potentiometric surface map can be prepared, and the general chemistry of the ground water can be characterized.

Serrana's deposit contains three types of ore: oxidized, micaceous and silicate-carbonate. The results presented refer to characterization and fundamental studies performed on fractions resulting from the purification of five samples from the silicate-carbonate type collected in the mine. Each type was purified and submitted to mineralogical characterization, zeta potential determinations, and microflotation experiments. The samples, with exception of the barite, are mineralogically complex and the selectivity between apatite and gangue minerals is poor. Under the current state of art, it is impossible to feed the plant with the silicate-carbonate ore, unless it is blended with the standard oxidized ore.

The US mining industry finished the traumatic 1980s with a strong economic performance. Worldwide economic growth and capital spending led to tight metal markets. So, 1989 metals prices were generally higher than average 1988 prices. Financial markets' volatility resulted from US junk bond defaults, heavy US savings and loan losses and effects on the US budget deficit, higher energy prices, and the seemingly intractable problems of some debtor countries. Moreover, the events in Eastern Europe promise fundamental changes in the world economic system for the 1990s. US mining companies that survived the decade had weathered economic changes that, at one point, reduced industry employment by 40%, drove oil companies to divest or liquidate recently acquired mineral subsidiaries, and led to substantial write-offs of reserves. Canadian and other international minerals firms experienced similar industry upheavels. The forced modernization and capacity rationalization produced an internationally competitive US industry. For example, even though 1989 US copper production was 27% greater than in 1980, industry employment was less than half the 1980 level. The steel industry and other minerals industries showed similar productivity improvements.

The safe, productive exploitation of coal in multiple-seam situations requires specific design technology. At present, there are two general design approaches that the mining engineer can use to analyze the multiple-seam problem in question, either simple empirical relationships or complex numerical models. Often, the empirical approaches are too general for the specific problem and the numerical models require too much time and expertise for the practicing engineer. In this paper, a new program designed for quickly and easily calculating the stresses, strains, and safety factors associated with basic multiple-seam mining situations is presented. The program implements a simplified, two-dimensional boundary-element method in order to model the complex multiple-seam stress and displacement interactions. The program incorporates automatic coal and gob property generation to simplify the input, and inherently calculates pillar safety factors to enhance the output.

The City of Los Angeles will rehabilitate approximately 9 miles of its North Outfall Sewer. This sewer was constructed in the 1920s as an unreinforced concrete semi-elliptical sewer. One of the methods for rehabilitation is to approach the sewer as a pre-excavated tunnel and install pre-cast segmental liners to provide a single pass corrosion resistant, structurally self sufficient project. The estimated cost for this project is $46 million. The project has completed the pre-design study, and the design is now underway.

Technological innovation in the minerals industry must be driven by the need to improve performance according to social, as well as environmental, safety, efficiency and production criteria. This paper outlines the possibilities and rationale for incorporating constructive technology assessment into technology research and development within the CSIRO Minerals Down Under National Research Flagship (MDU). The paper develops a process of Social License in Design that attempts to address the future social challenges and opportunities of a technology during development by utilising forecasting techniques and accounting for the perspectives and values of decision makers and likely stakeholders. Interviews with senior technologists and social scientists within MDU reveal the institutional context into which the Social License in Design process is to be situated and highlight key factors that may inhibit or enhance its uptake.

CITY OF EDMONTON Rate of Growth The City of Edmonton has been classed by some economists as being the most progressive City in Canada since the early 50's. The high rise buildings that are changing Edmonton's skyline, the rapidly expanding sewer and water network, and the proposed rapid transit system all indicate the requirements of an ever expanding City. Edmonton, the core of Canada's Energy Empire is the country's seventh largest metropolitan area. Bisected by the 22 mile long park of its magnificent river valley, it sits in the midst of the 50,000 sq miles of riches that have created it. Underneath the City, however, extending down for thousands of feet and encircling it for a radius of scores of miles, lies a fabulous store of petroleum wealth. By the early 1940's, based upon the needs of the farming areas, accompanied by some small exploitation of coal and timber, Edmonton grew to 100,000 people. Then in a short space of 20 years Edmonton shot up to be a city of 450,000. Figure 1 (Slide No. 1) indicates the population growth in the City of Edmonton and the Census Metropolitan Area from 1906 to 1971.

Under sponsorship of the USBM and later of the DOE, a new type of rotary rock drill has been developed by The Bendix Corporation. Originally developed for the production of holes for the installation of longer than seam height roof bolts, the flexible drill is a useful tool for many drilling applications. This drill allows hands-off or remote production of holes for increased drilling speed and greater operator safety in any strata suitable for rotary drilling. The paper discusses various applications and experience for the flexible drill system in coal mining, metal/nonmetal mining, and for general civil engineering uses. Manual, remote control, and automatic roof bolter modules are also discussed.

Mineral processing activities in general reflected the economic ills of 1981 and early 1982, but in some areas the depressed state of the industry resulted in increased activity. As were all aspects of the minerals industry, processing plant operations were severely affected by the recession-prone economy, by sagging prices for primary metal products-copper, molybdenum, nickel, iron, manganese, and especially uranium-and numerous shutdowns and layoffs. Copper production by major producers in Arizona and Utah was severely curtailed; Amax, the major US molybdenum, producer did considerable belt-tightening; and the uranium industry was in a state of disaster. Even the precious metal superstars-gold and silver-were affected, with a steady decline throughout the year in world market prices. Perhaps hardest hit have been newly developed properties, particularly in the uranium industry, and old-line properties where historical development impacts today. No longer can such properties afford the luxuries, for example, of a long haul distance between mine and plant or continued use of antiquated facilities. Surprisingly enough, the very state of the economy has caused increased activity in some sectors of the mineral processing industry. In mill design, although large projects have been tabled, smaller projects have gone on, with innovations in design, often for cost-saving reasons, that will affect future designing approaches. Economic restrictions are impacting on mill flowsheets as researchers look for improvements and better, less expensive techniques. Other unit processes-hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, concentration, materials handling-are impacted by the need for a better, less costly product. Although at the end of the first quarter of 1982, no major environmental legislation had been enacted, rumors persist that there will be a loosening of some of the stricter standards, both in the requirements themselves and in the time allowance for implementation. The year had seen some relaxation in how current legislation and standards are administered. For example, in OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) operations, there has been a shift toward voluntary checking of industry compliance with work rules, rather than emphasis on agency inspections. However, the industry continues to view environmental factors as having major influence on future operations and efforts to design for environmental safety are becoming almost as important as the processes themselves. Throughout the industry there has been a further focussing on project management, recognizing the necessity for tight control of budgets and schedules-and the systems used to effect them. Many modern export terminals are now in construction while others have either been held up or cancelled. Economics and environmental permits have been some of the major problems. Currently under construction are terminals in Newport News, VA; Charleston, SC; and Baltimore, MD. Expansion of existing facilities at Mobile, AL, and New Orleans, LA, is also well under way. A wide variety of systems and components are being used. They include traveling shiploaders, tunnel and bucket wheel reclaim¬ers, stackers and high line trippers, and bottom and side dump-type car dumpers. In the opinion of these authors, technology alone can never give an organization an edge over competitors or provide an industry step change. However, history has shown that technology applied with correct logistics and strategy makes a significant difference. Never has the minerals industry faced such daunting challenges and been in such need of a step change. Application of autonomous systems has been steadily increasing in the minerals industry. Automation technology has changed the mining value chain from exploration to mineral processing and refining. The future state will only see additional in-roads of automation into more processes and the whole system design. To better understand the near-future potential of automation, it is useful to explore and review the current state of automation in minerals development. A review of the state of automation research is given. The review will consider three critical areas: automation technology, system’s engineering and management processes around automation, and the role of human factors engineering in automated and semi-automated systems. The review ends with a discussion on the social and political risks of automation in terms of shared value and sustainable development.

Automation technology has changed the mining value chain from exploration to mineral processing and refining. The future state will only see additional in-roads of automation into more processes and the whole system design. To better understand the near-future potential of automation, it is useful to explore and review the current state of automation in minerals development. A review of the state of automation research is given. The review will consider three critical areas: automation technology, system’s engineering and management processes around automation, and the role of human factors engineering in automated and semi-automated systems. The review ends with a discussion on the social and political risks of automation in terms of shared value and sustainable development.

INTRODUCTION The process of predicting ground condition with exactitude and of ascertaining appropriate ground control measures is pertinent to each and every excavation. The control and support of soil and/ or rock during and subsequent to excavation is essential in order to overcome or avoid excessive movement, maintain stability or preserve integrity of the excavation, handle or prevent excessive water intrusion or hydrostatic pressure build up, and produce an excavation that is safe and suitable for its intended purpose. The design of support systems has primarily been, until recently, based upon experience and empirical or semiempirical guidelines, which do not lend themselves to thorough analytical calculations giving rise to the desired degree of confidence in design of such systems and consequently, several, if not a majority of support systems, no doubt, are overdesigned. The primary objective of this paper is, therefore, to briefly outline engineering considerations leading towards the design of ground control systems for near vertical excavations extending to shallow depths in metamorphic rock formations. Several engineering considerations including the selection of temporary support systems, technical aspects of design, and the sequence as well as details of construction, are briefly outlined. Prospecting in its modern context means simply the gathering of information on which, to base plans for the utilization of our mineral resources. One prospecting system familiar to T. V. viewers is the pan of the old gold prospector which, while he prospected, could produce the wealth which financed him in his search. Present day geophysical "prospecting" systems, which are based on the real or supposed responses of an ore specimen, to various stimuli finder controlled laboratory conditions, are promoted as means of reducing the cost of prospecting. The universal drawback to all geophysical systems is that they yield "soft" data which are only presumed to be analogous to ore mineralization until they can be calibrated, by conventional prospecting systems, to each actual mineral environment being tested. By this time the system usually is no longer cheap. Since the raw data are too esoteric to be used until interpreted by geophysicists, usually in the light of their own personal theories and experience, the certainty of multiple interpretation is introduced. The concept of prospecting, at St. Joe Minerals Corporation's Viburnum, Fletcher and Brushy Creek mines in the new Missouri Lead Belt, encompasses surface diamond drilling for preliminary exploration, the sub¬sequent development of ore body tonnages and grades and the establishment of mining parameters. The predominantly flat-lying mineralized formation is mined by room and pillar stoping. In an operating mine, jackhammer holer are drilled in backs and bottoms of stopes, and chip samples are taken for assay, concurrent with mining. Thus irregularities in ore bodies or nearby discontinuities are not overlooked which are above or below the general mine

Cyanide leaching is the most common process employed in the majority of the gold extraction plants. These gold extraction plants naturally generate tailings and/or effluents that contain highly toxic cyanides, In geographic locations with excess precipitation and therefore net positive water balance, a portion of these tailings must be discharged. Before these highly toxic cyanide-containing effluents can be discharged to the waterways, cyanide and any other toxic substance must be destroyed. Geographic locations with high evaporation and low precipitation, as in the western USA, result in net negative water balance and therefore these plants can operate with a zero discharge option. However, with the current stringent environ­mental regulations and concerns for bird and wildlife mortality, even these operations may be required to partially treat their tailings to preclude potential harm to wildlife. Furthermore, heap leach opera­tions are now generally required to detoxify the heaps before abandonment. It is, there­fore, apparent that all gold extraction plants may be required to install some form of effluent treatment in order to achieve the above objectives,.
