The hazard of rock bursts and rock falls as experienced in South African gold mines is examined in the light of recent research findings. The problem areas include high fatality rates, losses in production and equipment, and a detrimental influence on the recruitment of labour. The nature of the hazard is analysed, and it is shown that rock bursts are strongly related to the spatial rate of energy release by mining but that rock falls are not. The role of blasting and geological discontinuities is discussed. Practical rock-burst control strategies are compared, including the use of stabilizing pillars, back-filling and, in particular, techniques for reducing the frequency and severity of accidents resulting from large rock bursts. The latest stope-support experiments and their potential implications to mining are consid~red. It is concluded that a better understanding of the rock-burst and rock-fall hazard has resulted from the industry's research efforts. The findings can be applied towards obtaining an improved underground environment for men and machines.

This paper is the first in a series of three dealing with this subject and also with the rate of oxygen removal from the slags in the presence of solid carbon and with the physicochemical properties of the reduced slags. For selected members of the system, the melting temperatures and primary crystallization products were determined. as were the viscosity and the electrical resistivity of the corresponding melts. All the experiments were conducted in a neutral atmosphere. Where determined, the primary phase was found to be either perovskite or magnesium aluminium titanate. The composition variable exerting the most pronounced influence on viscosity or resistivity was found to be the basicity expressed as the mass ratio (CaO + MgO)jSiO,. The ratio CaOjMgO became important only at Iow basi<:ity values. Although generally there is a direct proportionality between log (viscosity) and log (resistivity), slags h&apos;lving either a very high silica content or a very high titania content have anomalously Iow electrical resistance.

The adsorption of gold from cyanide solutions onto constituents of the reef, and its role in reducing the efficiency of the gold-recovery process by M. R. URBAN. M.Sc. (Chem. Eng.) Rand (Visitor). Ph.D. (Cape Town) (Fellow) Evidence for the adsorption or re-precipitation of gold from cyanide solutions onto gangue minerals of the Witwatersrand reefs has been gathered over a number of years by various investigators. The evidence from tests using radioactive tracers is conclusive and indicates thlt adsorption contributes about 0,1 g/t to the total gold loss from conventional reduction works. The loss is a function of the alkalinity and cyanide concentration of the solution, and it appears to be affected by the extent of time between milling and cyanidation. The heavy minerals appear to be the strongest adsorbers, and the clay minerals somewhat less strong adsorbers. A sensitive qualitative test based on thin-layer chromatography permits the extent of adsorption and desorption to be readily determined.

Wet high-intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) for the concentration of gold and uranium was tested on many Witwatersrand cyanidation residues, and on some ores and flotation tailings. The results varied, but many indicated recoveries of over 60 per cent of the gold and uranium. The main source of loss is the inefficiency of WHIMS for material of smaller particle size than 20fLm. The recoveries in the continuous tests were lower than those in the batch tests. The continuous tests indicated an operational difficulty that could be experienced in practice, namely the tendency for wood chips and ferromagnetic particles to block the matrix of the separator. It was decided that a solution to the problem lies in the modification of the separator to allow continuous removal of the matrix for cleaning. A system has been developed for this purpose and is being demonstrated on a pilot-plant scale. Promising results were obtained in tests on a process that combines a coarse grind, gravity concentration, and WHIMS. In the gravity-concentration step, considerable recoveries, generally over SO per cent, of high-grade pyrite. were obtained, together with high recoveries of gold and moderate, but possibly important, recoveries of uranium. A simple model describing the operation of the WHIMS machine in terms of the operating parameters is described. This should reduce the amount of empirical test work required for the optimization of operating conditions and should provide a basis for scale-up calculations. The economics of the WHIMS process is discussed.

SYNOPSIS Changes in the national productivity (gross national product per head of the population) have been assessed in order to derive a target figure for the required annual increase. The conclusion reached IS compared with the targets of the economic development programme of the Republic. Productivity and management structure in the gold mining industry is then analyzed together with investment in plant, machinery and equipment for rock handling purposes. The conclusion is drawn that productivity improvement does not appear to have accorded with the massive expenditures in plant and equipment, and in augmented management. The productivity of the manufacturing and construction sectors of the economy has been examined. The principal difficulty is that the main avenue of approach is the value of product divided by the total labour force. This introduces inflationary questions, and the use of a suitable deflator becomes of prime importance. Severa1 different methods of assessing the productivity improvement in the industrial sector have been used with what is regarded as a comparatively high degree of compatibility. Improvements in productivity in the manufacturing industry up to 1966 appear, from the information available, to have substantially exceeded comparable figures for the mining industry. There is however evidence that thereafter productivity of the manufacturing industry has not maintained this satisfactory rate of increase. If the economy is to achieve the planned rate of expansion, there is no doubt that greater attention to this aspect will be required in the future than has been accorded to it in the past.

ABSTRACT: In the south of the Island of Gran Canaria (Spain) there appear layers of swelling clays inside volcanic formations of a fonolitic type, down to depths as low as 500 m, with thicknesses of 1 to 3 m. Two tunnels (each of length 1,500 m) have been built in these zones (ignimbrites and swelling clays), work on which started in the ‘70s. The construction has been influenced by phenomena of expansivity and decompression. Presented below are the problems that arose, the field and indoor studies conducted and the numerical optimisation of the lining. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Im Süden der Insel Gran Canaria (Spanien) kommen im Inneren vulkanischer Formationen phonolithischen Typs in Tiefen von bis zu 500 Metern 1 bis 3 Meter dicke Blähtonschichten vor. In diesem Gelände aus Schmelztuff und Blähton begann man zu Beginn der siebziger Jahre, zwei Tunnel von jeweils 1.500 Metern Länge anzulegen. Die Bauarbeiten standen unter dem Einfluss von Dehnungs- und Dekompressionserscheinungen. Der folgende Text enthält eine Darstellung der aufgetretenen Probleme, der durchgeführten Feld- und Laborstudien und der numerischen Optimierung der Tunnelauskleidung. RESUME: Dans le sud de l’Ille du Gran Canaria (Espagne) on a détecté des couches d’argile gonflante dans l’intérieur des formations de roches volcaniques fonolitiques, à la profondeur autom des 500 m, avec épaisseur de 1 à 3 m. On a perforé deux tunnels (de longueur 1.500 m chaque un) dans cettes zones (igniumbrités et argiles gonflantes), chantier qui comenza pendant les 70’. La construction on a influencé pour des phénomènes d’expansivité et de décompression. Dans cette communication on présente les problèmes presentes, les études de chantier et théoriques realicés et l’optimisation numérique développé pour dimensionner le revêtement.

INTRODUCTION During the past decade a wealth of knowledge has been acquired about the mechanisms and reactions responsible for the physical properties of metals. In the field of steels, in particular, research of a fundamental nature has enabled us to interpret mechanical properties such as hardness, brittleness, creep strength, etc., in terms of atomic interactions. So rapid has been the development of physical metallurgy in some fields that publications are often outdated by the time they appear in print. The development of new steel products has been rather empirical by nature in the past and only during the past few years have new products been "designed" in terms of known physico-metallurgical phenomena. However, although this is a great stride forward it should be added that the development of a commercially successful product is a far more complicated process. In addition to the physico-metallurgical background this requires consideration of factors such as low production cost, market research and probably most valuable of all, an interested end user to co-operate in the development. This paper deals rather briefly with three of the most recent developments in steels in Britain with which the author has had some association. The main purpose of this is to demonstrate how the improved properties of the new product are based upon established physico-metallurgical phenomena. Generally speaking a commercially successful product of the type described here offers similar properties to that of an existing product at lower cost or has improved properties or features such as greater ease of cold forming, at similar cost. ULTRA-FINE GRAIN STRUCTURAL STEELS The development of higher yield strength structural steels dates back over a considerable number of years and has led to a variety of types. The one described below contains niobium as a grain refiner in an otherwise conventional mild steel matrix. By controlled rolling in a strip mill considerably increased yield strengths are obtained. In Fig. 1 are shown somewhat diagrammatically the relative hardening effects of carbon and manganese on ferrite. It will be seen that strength is enhanced by the solid solution hardening effect of manganese and the pearlite content. An obvious limitation of high pearlite content is a lack of cold workability and weldability. Manganese has to be restricted to low levels for the same reasons. The two other mechanisms which are known to impart higher strength are precipitation hardening and grain refinement. Precipitation hardening is impractical in most cases for structural steels and it is therefore clear that only grain refinement remains as a potentially useful strengthening mechanism.

A fuel cell is an electrochemical engine that converts the chemical energy of a fuel, such as hydrogen, and an oxidant, such as oxygen, directly into electricity. The emerging fuel cell industry may represent a major opportunity for the global platinum mining industry. This is because low temperature fuel cell systems use platinum group metals as catalysts. Fuel cell vehicles may become the most important driver of future platinum demand within years of their commercialization. A great number of factors impact on and drive the diffusion of fuel cell vehicle innovation. Such drivers range from energy security to environmental concerns and the technological development of fuel cells and systems. Such factors and drivers of fuel cell vehicle diffusion are combined with the generic ?body of knowledge? on ?technology forecasting? and ?diffusion of innovation? to design a framework that provides a holistic approach to the analysis of this complex enterprise. An attempt is made in this paper to address the following questions: Which types of fuel cells require platinum group metals? Which types of fuel cells will achieve dominant design status? Will fuel cell vehicles diffuse successfully? How big will the impact of successful fuel cell vehicle diffusion be on future platinum demand? How well do fuel cell vehicles compete with incumbent technologies such as spark-ignited and compression-ignited internal combustion engine-driven vehicles? How soon will oil depletion start to drive the diffusion of fuel cell vehicles? How important is hydrogen as a fuel? What impact does the inadequate hydrogen fuelling infrastructure have on fuel cell vehicle diffusion? The paper contains some initial results of a research project that has the aim of producing a schedule of future platinum demand generated from fuel cell vehicles. A progressive karst formation and its influence upon engineered structures in the ‘phil-karst’ rock mass draw a tunnel engineer’s special attention to a long-term stability and the maintenance issues. Karst sinkholes of any size beneath the railway bed cause train wrecks or long interruptions in train traffic during rehabilitation work. The collapse of cave roof, called a ‘doline’, is in general connected to the cave by the gradual dissolving of the rock, developing into subsidence and sink-holes. The principal conclusions obtained from the field experiments are as follows: It is found that the development of karst cavity shows a relationship with a structural geological line and it is necessary to define the dominant directions of joint and geological layer (formation). The relation-ship between the water flow and joint direction can be used as an indicator of cavity presence in their direction. In addition the direction of in-situ stress can play a role in the development of karst cavities. A risk map of karst scenario is produced for the tunnel supporting systems with rock type classifications in water-soluble karstic rock mass. Eine fortschrittliche Karst-Formung und sein Einfluß auf angelegten Strukturen in der Phil-Karst-Felsenmasse wecken einem Tunnelingenieur eine besondere Aufmerksamkeit zu einer langfristigen Stabilität und der Wartungsausgaben auf. Karstensinkhöhlen in irgendeinen Größen unter dem Eisenbahnbett sind die Ursache der Zugeszerstörung oder der langen Unterbrechungen in Zugverkehr während Rehabilitationsarbeit. Der Zusammenbruch von Höhlendach, d.h. ein “doline”, ist im allgemeinen an die Höhle, die durch das allmähliche Auflösen des Felsen zu entstehen ist und sich in die Subsidence und Sinkhöhlen entwickeln, angeschlossen. Die Hauptschlüsse, die von Feldenprüfungen erhalten wurden, sind folgendermaßen: es wird gefunden, daß die Entwicklung von Karstenhöhlung eine Beziehung mit einer strukturellen geologischen Linie zeigt und es notwendig ist, die vorherrschenden Richtungen von Gelenk und geologischer Schicht (die Formung) zu definieren. Die Beziehung zwischen dem Wasserablauf und der gemeinschaftlichen Richtung kann als ein Anzeiger von Höhlungsanwesenheit in ihrer Richtung benutzt werden. Zusätzlich kann die Richtung von In-Situ-Spannung eine Rolle in der Entwicklung der Karstenhöhlungen spielen. Für das Tunnelunterstützungssystem, welches mit Felsentypenklassifizierungen in wasserlöslicher Karstic-Felsenmasse, ist eine Risikokarte von Karstenszenar hergestellt. Une formation progressive de karst et son influence sur les structures tracées dans la masse de roche "phil-karst" retiennent l&apos;attention particulière des ingénieurs de tunnel aux problèmes de la stabilité à long terme et du maintien. Les creux de karst de toute la taille sous le chemin de fer causent les accidents de trains ou de longues interruptions pendant le travail de réhabilitaion. L&apos;effondrement du plafond de caverne qui s&apos;appelle "doline" s&apos;est, en général, connecté à la caverne par dissolution progressive de la roche, en devenant l&apos;affaissement et les creux. Les conclusions importantes venant des experimentations sur le terrain sont suivants: d&apos;abord, le développement de la cavité de karst montre le rapport avec la ligne géologique de la structure et il est nécessaire de définir les directions dominantes du joint et la couche(formation) géologique. La relation entre l&apos;écoulement de l&apos;eau et la direction du joint peut être utilisé comme un indicateur de la présence de la cavité dans leur direction. De plus, la direction sur place peut contribuer au développement des cavités de karst. Le plan risqué de karst s&apos;est produit pour le système d&apos;appui du tunnel avec les classifications du type de roche dans la masse de roche karstique qui est soluble dans l&apos;eau.

While the refractory lining contains the process on a steady-state basis, the tap-hole must provide a channel for transport of molten materials at discreet intervals, with thermal cycling as routine. The tap-hole introduces a discontinuity in any lining, and this fact can lead to failure in the region around the tap-hole before general lining failure occurs. Hence there is a need for a rapid and reliable tap-hole repair technique that can be readily implemented in conjunction with all types of linings. The UCAR®V Repair supplied by GrafTech is a durable solution capable of repairing all types of lining designs and has been extensively utilized in the ferroalloy industry. More than 20 UCAR®V Repairs have been successfully performed in South Africa alone. This paper describes the system in general and reviews recent repairs and their unique challenges.

The mechanism of the flow of tailings slurry is examined, and a mathematical model is derived to describe the flow. Predictions based on the model are then compared with the flow that actually occurred near the shaft at Bafokeng after the No. I tailings dam had failed. The predictions are found to be of acceptable accuracy.

The theory of firing of electric detonators is developed insofar as it affects the design of blasting circuits. Practical values for the firing conditions suited to detonators of local manufacture are tabulated. The design principles of blasting circuits are outlined.
