(Fellow) The influence of energy-recovery systems on the rise in temperature of water going down mines is examined. It is concluded that the, cost benefit of such systems, deriving partially from the reduced temperature rise in situations where cold water IS sent underground from surface, would more than justify the installation cost.

SYNOPSIS For some time, Vaal Reefs South has operated blindhole borers successfully as an integral part of the mining cycle of operations. To date, over 13 000 m of mechanized boxholing has been completed, and from time to time impressive performances have been achieved. The paper describes the machines, the modus operandi, and the structure of the boring organization at the Mine, with some of the results recorded. The Mine recently took delivery of two new machines with interesting design features. The introduction and early experiences with these two machines are also described.

This paper reviews the history, sources, mineralogy, extraction metallurgy, conversion, and enrichment of uranium in South Africa. Over the past 40 years extraction plants were built at 27 sites, an9.over 140 kt of uranium have been produced. Older plants have had to adapt to changing market conditions, no single technology has had the opportunity to become entrenched, and costs have been reduced to a third of those of the original flowsheet. The research efforts aimed at developing the country s nuclear raw materials have been particularly rewarding, as they have enabled South Africa to become a world leader in the extraction of uranium from low-grade ores and to develop methods for uranium enrichment and the production of nuclear fuels.

Two column flotation cells have been installed as single-stage rougher cleaners at Batu Hijau. The objective was to provide additional residence time in the cleaner circuit to maintain maximum recovery during high mill throughput and high feed grade periods. Installation of the columns has allowed the relatively coarse, well-liberated rougher concentrate and the relatively fine, low-grade scavenger concentrate to be treated separately, improving metallurgical performance in the cleaner circuit. Plant results show that the columns produce a high-grade concentrate at an average stage copper recovery of approximately 80 per cent. There is also indication of increases in both overall plant copper recovery and final concentrate copper grade. In addition, the operability and stability of the cleaner circuit has greatly improved.

Occurrences of hazardous events (explosions of methane or coal dust, fires, outbursts) have been investigated and presented as a flow of events in time. It has been shown that flows of hazardous events in a long time span are homogeneous, stationary and no-after effect flows and can be considered as stationary Poisson flows. A flow of CH4/coal dust explosions that had happened for the last 27 years in Ukraine was analyzed. The explosions have been statistically processed. Practicability of agreement of statistical and theoretical data on mathematical expectation and mean square deviation of time interval between explosion and the explosion intensity has been stated. Probability of an emergency event in time is expressed through an exponential function, while mathematical expectation of an accident and mean square deviation of time interval between successive explosions are in inverse proportion to the accident intensity. Accident probability for practical purposes can be determined as a product of accident intensity by calculated time interval.

Most diamonds are liberated from their ores by crushing. Diamond and other coarse grained mineral ores require carefully optimised crushing circuits. Recent advances in computer technology have made possible the on-line capture of crushing plant performance data and, hence, the accurate empirical modelling of the crushing process. Such models are used in simulation studies to determine the optimum operating conditions for a given plant. A system is described which allows operating data from mineral treatment processes to be logged. Up to 16 channels of data may be recorded simultaneously at sampling rates in the kiloHertz range per channel. A data storage and analysis procedure is described which allows the system to make full use of its sampling capabilities.

A kinetic model framework for single particle kinetics in combined diffusion and adsorption processes is presented. The framework applies to the general case in which both diffusion and the adsorption reaction play important roles in determining the overall rate in processes where the migrating species can both adsorb and accumulate. The technique, which should be applicable to a wide range of reaction mechanisms, consists of an iterative integration procedure for the coupled diffusion and reaction equations. The case of a reversible linear adsorption reaction rate is developed. In order to verify the technique as a legitimate method of model development, an analytical solution for the identical case is derived and compared to the numerical solution. Excellent agreement exists between the two solutions.

All underground openings are three-dimensional, and in many cases it is not valid to analyse two-dimensional sections. This has been a problem in the past owing to the magnitude and complexity of three-dimensional stress analysis. In this paper a three-dimensional boundary element approach, using non-conforming quadratic elements, which is specifically applicable to underground excavations, is described. In addition, the philosophy of application of stress analyses is discussed. Three case histories are presented to demonstrate the practical nature of the approach as a tool in solving mining problems.

Actual observations of rockburst damage, together with some theoretical considerations, strongly suggest that conventional approaches to the design of tunnel support are inappropriate where there is a significant seismic risk. The present widely used support systems, which are based on stiff, fully grouted re-bars, are inadequate where rock displacement velocities exceed 1 m/s. It is shown by means of a simple conceptual model that yielding of the support elements is essential to ensure their survival when they are subject to the high strain rates typical of severe rockbursts. The model proposes that the total load in the element is an impulsive tensile force imposed and sustained by a single 'tributary' block ejected from the tunnel wall. The stability of the system is determined from a comparison of the kinetic energy developed by the block with the energy of deformation absorbed by a grouted steel tendon. A novel test procedure was developed for the validation of this approach, and for an examination of the energy-absorbing capacity of stiff and yielding tendons. The results of an initial series of tests showed that the recently developed cone-bolt is an effective yielding device. It absorbs twenty times more impulsive-load energy than is consumed by the complete fracture of grouted re-bar of equivalent strength, and it remains totally unscathed. Importantly, the results demonstrate that the ejection model is not merely an explanatory concept, but can be used as a representative and valid design method.

A class of gravity separation unit operations in ore-dressing relies for its operation on the production of a stratified bed. Heavier material gravitates downwards, and separation is achieved by splitting the ore horizontally, with the recovery of a dense stream and a lighter stream. The important ore-dressing unit operations that fall in this class are the jig, the Reichert cone and the pinched sluice. A new quantitative model based on Mayer's potential theory is developed here. This model is developed completely for the simple case of binary mono-size particulate materials, but the extension to units operating with feed material distributed over particle size and density is discussed in principle. The model can be used to predict the performance of these units and is very suitable for simulation. The model is tested successfully against experimental data obtained from a batch jig and a Reichert cone.

Applying non-explosive expansion material (NEEM) is one of the safest methods for rock fracturing, especially in a hard rock quarry. An experimental study was conducted to determine the pressure exerted by NEEM in a hole, which is necessary for analysing rock fracturing, particularly in a numerical modelling. Stress distribution was developed in a thick-wall cylinder in order to measure the tangential strain on the external boundary. In the experiments, nine pipes of different materials and varying diameters were selected and then loaded internally with a general type of NEEM. Through electrical strain gauges, the tangential strains were recorded on the external boundary of the pipes. The results obtained from these tests and existing data from previous researchers were utilized for the statistical analysis. A new experimentally-derived formula is proposed for determining the pressure exerted by NEEM by multiple parameter regression with a high correlation coefficient. The proposed model has a nonlinear form with three independent parameters i.e. the hole diameter, the time, and the modulus of elasticity of the material.

Many minerals processing operations result in crushed rock being mixed with a liquid. Sometimes, the rock particles have to be dried before the next process begins and there may be a considerable distance between the equipment carrying out these processes. Bateman Engineered Technologies (BET) developed, patented and commercialized a method of simultaneous pneumatic conveying and drying. A joint project to assist with optimizing the process is under-way. Part of it is a numerical simulation of the process. The simulation is done using a dedicated program written in MATLAB, (commercial software which is widely used in engineering). It accounts for heat and mass transfer as well as particle transport. The main part of the program consists of a loop containing a series of equations which are evaluated sequentially. During any particular iteration, the properties are changed one at a time. Since the properties are changing relatively slowly, this method gives good results. The outputs of the simulation are consistent with the operational experience of BET’s engineers. The output is very comprehensive and all numerical. Since the program is currently being used for research purposes, flexibility is very important. Thus the output is converted into a spreadsheet file. Variations in the output quantities are displayed graphically using MS Excel. Some simulation could have been done using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. The advantages and disadvantages (technical, financial and skills requirements) of the two approaches for this particular type of simulation are compared briefly. Right now the South African mining industry is a high-profile, vital contributor to the nation just as it has been for the past one hundred and twenty-six years since the discovery of diamonds-perhaps even further back if the mining of copper, iron ore, tin, and other minerals in earlier centuries is included. The media in 1995, as has been the case over the years, bear testimony to the complex interactions between the industry and its stakeholders: shareholders, government, employees and their unions, training and educational institutions, researchers, markets, the public, and suppliers of goods, services, and infrastructure. The pressures and challenges that the industry continues to face can be summarized as safety and health, competitiveness, and social and environmental responsibility. There are no surprises here. The motivation for the industry to perform well in these areas is clear; the focus I intend to bring is on the most important tool required for success-that of good mining engineering. This Address sets out - to review the mining aspects that have been discussed in South Africa during the first five years of the decade, a discussion that shows the return of the country as an important mining forum, confirms the role of professional institutes and associations in the development of mining engineering, and brings current relevant issues into focus - to highlight the vital role of mining engineering in the industry, and to identify priorities for the remainder of the decade - to provide the prospective mining engineer, the mining-engineering student and trainee, and the practising mining engineer and mine manager with a better appreciation of the mining-engineering discipline. institutes and ssociations

The purpose of this paper is to develop an expert system for hydraulic excavator and truck selection in surface mining. Hydraulic excavators and trucks are finding increasing applications in mining operations. Hydraulic excavators are extensively used especially when bringing electricity to rural areas is difficult and for small-scale mining. This paper describes an expert system, which selects the optimum hydraulic excavator truck configuration such that unit production cost is minimized and technical constraints such as geological, geotechnical and mining constraints are satisfied. The system has four modules: user interface, rules and an methods, databases and output module. The expert system in this study is developed within KappaPC shell. It supports object-orientated technology for the MS Windows environment. The software provides a very useful tool to practitioners, saving time and cost. Equipment selection is a recurring and expensive problem of mine planning and often involves interdisciplinary experts from different fields. It is very difficult and expensive to bring together all these experts. The capabilities of the expert system developed are illustrated in the paper. The software overcomes the difficulties of selecting the proper equipment for surface mining operations, which is very important, and results in substantial savings. Equipment databases for hydraulic excavators with 15-59 yd3 capacities and trucks with 35-360 tons are constructed and these databases are used to select the proper configuration. This study is concerned with the electric potential induced by deformation, fracturing and sliding of non-piezoelectric geomaterials. In experiments, the acoustic emissions together with electric potential measurements were also measured in order to see how the so-called seismic electric signals are associated with new fracture occurrence and propagation and sliding in case of existing discontinuities. The outcomes of this experimental study may explain why such electric potential variations may occur during the fracturing and sliding of non-piezoelectric geomaterials. On the basis of these outcomes, their possible implications in geo-engineering and geo-science are discussed. Ce travail concerne 1e potentiel électrique produit par la déformation, 1a fracture ou le glissement du matériel géologique non-piézoélectrique. Aux expérimentations, on a mesuré 1es émissions acoustiques avec le potentiel électrique afin de constater la relation entre les phénomènes de glissement ou de formation et de propagation de nouvelles fractures le long des discontinuités existantes. Les résultats de ce travail expérimental expliquent pourquoi de telles variations de potentiel electrique se produisent durant le glissement ou la fracture du matériel non-piézoélectrique. Sur la base de ces résultats, on a discuté de leurs éventuelles implications dans les domaines de 1a géologie et de 1a géo-ingénierie. Diese Studie befasst sich mit dem elektrischen Potential das durch die Deformation, Bruchbildung und Gleiten von nicht-piezoelektrischen Geomaterialien induziert wird. In Experimenten wurden die akustischen Emissionen zusammen mit elektrischen Potentialmessungen gemessen, um zu sehen, wie die so genannten seismischen elektrischen Signale mit neuer Bruchbildung und Ausbreitung sowie Gleiten im Falle von vorhandenen Diskontinuitäten verbunden sind. Die Ergebnisse dieser experimentellen Untersuchungen könnten erklären warum elektrische Potential Schwankungen während der Bruchbildung und dem Gleiten von nicht-piezoelektrischen Geomaterialien entstehen. Auf der Basis dieser Ergebnisse, wurden ihre möglichen Implikationen in Geoingenieurwissenschaften behandelt.

"The Anglo American Platinum Rustenburg Base Metals Refiners (RBMR) is the largest producer of nickel cathode in South Africa. It treats slow-cooled matte to recover a platinum group metal-containing magnetic fraction for downstream processing and a nonmagnetic fraction to produce nickel and copper cathode, cobalt sulphate, and sodium sulphate. The refinery was recently expanded from 21 to 33 kt/a nickel. During the ramp-up phase, the sulphur removal section was found to be a constraint to throughput. Nickel hydroxide is precipitated from nickel spent electrolyte by addition of sodium hydroxide, and filtration of the nickel precipitate allows sulphur to be removed from the circuit as aqueous sodium sulphate in the filtrate. The filtration fluxes were found to be limiting the circuit’s capacity. An obvious solution would have been to install additional filtration capacity at significant capital cost and long lead times. RBMR chose rather to first initiate a collaborative project with Anglo American Technical Solutions to better understand the impact of process conditions on filtration characteristics and to evaluate whether the filtration flux could be increased by improving the quality of the nickel precipitate.A deeper understanding of nickel hydroxide precipitation chemistry and kinetics in the context of high nickel and sodium hydroxide concentrations was developed, guided by precipitation theory and confirmed by laboratory tests and plant observations. It was found that the filtration rate could be significantly improved by modifying the precipitate characteristics. A new precipitation process was engineered and retrofitted into the existing plant. Since start-up of the new precipitation system, the available capacity of the sulphur removal section has more than doubled, and control of the process has improved with the better agitation. This paper describes the theory and results used to design the new agitation system, as well as the impact of the change on capital investment, operability, and process efficiency."

"The behaviour of employees is an essential issue in the field of occupational health and safety. Safe behaviour is to a large extent determined by, apart from motivation and preventive actions, an employee’s attitude towards hazard. Thus, attention should be given to defining employees’ attitudes, and following that, to the possibility of correcting and shaping these attitudes in relation to hazard and obeying occupational health and safety regulations. The authors have focused on the analysis of employee attitudes to health and safety regulations in Polish coal mining companies, taking into consideration earlier research on the behaviour of selected employees. The paper presents the methods used to identify Z-type (passive) behaviour. Next, this behaviour is analysed to identify differences between a Z-type employee (enslaved) and other employees. To conclude, the paper presents a list of possible motivational tools that may be used to encourage occupational health and safety in Z-type employees. IntroductionThe technical state of equipment and conditions in the workplace greatly influence occupational safety. However, the deciding factor influencing the rate of accidents in the workplace is the frequency with which employees practise risky behaviour. Factors such as the social conditioning of conduct and motivation for organizing safe work conditions have been included in the notion of creating a positive culture of work safety. This notion has been approved as one of the main goals in management (Studenski, 1996).Safe behaviour is to a large extent, apart from motivation and preventive actions, determined by an employee’s attitude towards hazard. All actions undertaken in the field of occupational health and safety, including training, motivational systems, or imitation of behaviour resulting from a high culture of occupational safety in a given work environment, will not bring about the desire effects if workers have an inappropriate attitude towards occupational health and safety regulations."
