The Decar Nickel District is a greenfield discovery by FPX Nickel Corp., of nickel mineralisation located in central British Columbia (BC), Canada. The Baptiste deposit is part of the Decar Nickel District and is a unique deposit containing a nickel-iron alloy mineral called awaruite, with over 2-billion tonnes of inferred resource grading 0.12% Davis Tube Recoverable (DTR) nickel. This deposit represents a significant nickel resource. Awaruite is a high density and ferromagnetic mineral, which could be recovered, along with magnetite that is also present in the samples, using magnetic separation. However, there is still a lack of understanding of the properties of the awaruite and its metallurgical response. This information is imperative for the set-up of the variables involved in its concentration. The aim of this paper is to show and discuss the effect of magnetic field strength for the recovery of nickel from Baptiste deposit samples. Magnetic separation at bench and pilot scale with different magnetic field strengths is evaluated as a concentration method for awaruite. Mineralogical information is provided to support the results and also to briefly assess the variability of DTR nickel within the deposit. The Baptiste deposit is unique and will benefit from a sound scientific understanding of the process solution as well as other ongoing work. If successful, the outcome will lead to the development of a mine. With greater than 2-billion tonnes of inferred resource, the mine would represent a significant new source of nickel globally. As an alternative to the conventional flotation method, there has been continual research in an effort to enhance base metal ores and combustibles recovery using ultrasonics. These studies however were largely limited to the pre-treatment of ores for the removal of surface contaminants while the effect of ultrasonics on the bubble and pulp-phase interactions remained somewhat unexplored. Noting this deficiency, this study aimed to investigate the mechanistic effect of an ultrasonic field in an impeller less flotation cell specifically focusing on the bubble-particle interaction dynamics. A lab-scale flotation cell (capacity 1 litre) was designed, involving a vertically oriented ultrasonic probe (20 kHz, rated at 1.2 kW) and operated in the output power range from 1 to 20% with continuous liquid recirculation. Particle suspension was achieved by the combined action of recirculation and ultrasonic pulses. Interactions of coarse size glass ballotini particles (D32 = 314 μm) with bubbles (< 1 mm diameter) in the presence of a surfactant were studied, using high-speed imaging. Application of an ultrasonic pulse in the aqueous medium resulted in the generation of numerous microbubbles which increased with increasing input power and duration of the ultrasonic pulse time. Such periodic pulses introduced at a high level of turbulence in the pulp phase facilitated adequate bubble-particle contacts. Microbubbles played a key role in forming particle clusters which were observed to be floatable even in the absence of any carrier bubbles. When carrier bubbles were introduced, some of these particle clusters attached to the bubble surface and conveniently floated. It was noted that a favourable state of bubble-particle interaction was achievable to produce stable bubble-particles aggregates by suitably controlling the input power and period of the applied ultrasonic pulse. Industrial mining in Zambia started in the 1930s when the world class copper deposits near the border with Katanga were developed. The discovery of these deposits began at the turn of the century when the first claims in the Copperbelt were pegged at Chambishi, north of what became the town of Kitwe1. World War I and the difficulties of raising sufficient capital for such large scale undertakings delayed the exploitation of these deposits. Following this hesitant start, a large copper mining complex was built, resulting in the development of five major towns, all highly dependent on the mining and beneficiation of copper and cobalt. Copper became so important to the country that, on independence, the only non-mining town to make it onto a list of the top six was the capital, Lusaka. From commissioning of the mines to the end of the colonial period in 1964, copper production increased to just over 640 000 t annually2 (see Figure 1). After the establishment of the new Zambian state, production continued to increase, supported by a benign legislative environment and strong international copper prices. The government of Kenneth Kaunda was intent on improving the conditions of the rural poor and reducing unemployment in urban areas. To this end, the government embarked on an ambitious project of refocusing Zambia&apos;s economy away from the colonial role of commodity supply to one of decentralized mass employment. The Copperbelt industrial complex was key to the success of this approach, and in 1969 the Zambian State acquired a 51 per cent stake in Zambia&apos;s two main copper producing companies: Roan Selection Trust and Rhodesian Anglo American Corporation. The former became Roan Consolidated Mines Ltd (RCM) and the latter became Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines Ltd (NCCM). In the year they were nationalized, the mines produced at least 720 000 t of copper? and employed approximately 48,000 workers (see Figure 2)2-4. The subsequent economic policies of the Zambian Government depended heavily on the state&apos;s ability to monopolize the proceeds of copper mining.

This paper discusses system integration and installation of High-Tec systems in underground mines. ABB has the capability to be a System Integrator and co-operates with partners in different areas of technology. Today it is difficult to find one Company that is responsible for the complete Automation System. The design of the system is also dependent on the caving procedure that is currently being used in mines. Most of the engineering must be done during the feasibility study and the design phase. Any mistakes made during these phases will be costly to rectify in the commissioning phase. The paper will also include a presentation of the benefit of using Automation in an Underground Mine, and the importance of integration with the people component. Most of the experience and discussions in this paper are from different technologies that have been developed in Scandinavia and adopted from LKAB in Kiruna. The author of this paper was responsible for the Automation projects in Kiruna Mine during1994 - 1999. These projects include: • Broadband communication of data, audio and compressed video in one data stream. • Control System for Haulage -1045m • Automation of Load Haulage and Dumping machines (LHD) • Control of Production Drilling Rigs from a Central Control Room.

Several aspects of the behaviour and properties of backfills consisting of cemented cyclone underflow tailings are illustrated by means of examples, and guidelines are given on the optimization of the performance of cemented fills. The stretch characteristics of the geofabric used to contain freshly placed backfill are described, as well as the relationship between these characteristics and the forces acting on retaining barricades. The properties required to achieve a self-supporting, stable free face in cemented backfill are explored, and a graphic relationship between stable height and shear strength is presented and compared with that for uncemented (classified) tailings. After a description of the characteristics of Witwatersrand quartzite gold-tailings backfill and commonly used cements, the process of drainage and air entry into backfill is outlined. Following this, the early-age gain in strength and the shear-strength characteristics, as well as the compressibility characteristics of cemented backfill, are described. Two phenomena that are potentially damaging to cemented backfill are seismic effects (or blasting acceleration) and the closure that takes place during the curing of cement. Investigations show that neither of these phenomena is actually significantly deleterious to gold-tailings backfill: liquefaction does not Occur as a result of seismicity, and hydration of cemented fill is not significantly impeded by closure.

An approach to the design of a tailings disposal system is presented using an example from a platinum project on the eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex as a base case. The design is driven by two inputs: namely, maximizing water recovery and minimizing power cost, expressed as cubic metres and kilowatts per ton of solids deposited on the tailings storage facility respectively. The approach considers low-, medium-, and high-density platinum tailings and uses material-specific aspects such as thickening and rheology to determine the most economical option. An analysis based on direct capital and operating cost (water and electricity) shows that the medium-density scenario results in the lowest total cost per ton of tailings deposited, even though this system results in the highest electricity consumption per ton of tailings deposited. As the cost of water and electricity is likely to increase in the future, the higher-density tailings disposal options become more economical, with the paste option the preferred option.

Platinum production in Southern Africa amounted to 80% of world production in 2005with a small increase from 5 117 000 ounces to 5 275 000 ounces. For the seventh consecutive year the platinum market is on course to record a moderate deficit in supply. This is reflected in the price increase from a trading range US$860 to US$880 in June 2005 to an excess of US$1 200 in September 2006. Southern Africa, with its extensive platinum reserves, will continue to be the dominant platinum producer and has a number of new mines in an advanced stage of planning. The slogan ?Platinum Surges Ahead? was selected to describe the exciting and vibrantnature of all aspects of platinum mining, beneficiation and marketing. This conference will cover these aspects from exploration and orebody delineation, through mine design, development and operation to mine closure; mineral beneficiation, marketing and compliance with the Mining Charter will also be subjects for discussion and debate. It is also anticipated that the issue of overall increases in productivity, through the introduction of technology, will demonstrate Southern Africa?s status as a premier mining district. It is my pleasure to welcome delegates from abroad and locally, on behalf of the SAIMM, to the Second International Platinum Conference ?Platinum Surges Ahead?. I trust that you will find the proceedings informative and value adding and will participate in the discussions and debate in order to obtain maximum benefit from the conference. I am sure that the post-conference tours will be interesting and of great benefit to participants. Finally, a big word of thanks to the members of the Organising Committee, the management and staff of the SAIMM, and to our willing sponsors, without all of whom this conference would not have been possible.

The following notes have been compiled to assist authors in the preparation of papers for presentation to the Institute and for publication in the Journal. All papers must meet the standards set by the Council of the Institute, and for this purpose all papers are referred to at least two referees appointed by Council. STANDARDS FOR ACCEPTANCE To merit consideration papers should conform to the high standards which have been established for publication over many years. Papers on research should contain matter that is new, interpretations that are novel or of new significance and conclusions that cast a fresh light on old ideas. Descriptive papers should not be a repetition of well-known practices or ideas but should incorporate developments which would be of real interest to technical men and of benefit to the mining and metallurgical Industry. In some cases a well prepared review paper can be of value, and will be considered for publication. All papers and particularly research papers no matter how technical the subject, should be written with the average reader of the Journal in mind, to ensure wide interest. The amount of textbook material included in a contribution should be the minimum essential to the argument. The length of a paper is not the criterion of its worth and it should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with the lucid presentation of the subject. Only in very exceptional circumstances should a paper exceed 15 pages of the Journal (15 000 words, if there are no tables or diagrams). Six to ten pages is more normal. NOTE: Papers in the Journal are printed in 10 point type, which is larger than the 8 point type used on this page. For special publications Council may decide on page sizes smaller than A4 used for this Journal. The text should be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side only on A4 size paper, leaving a left-hand margin of 4 cm, and should be submitted in duplicate to facilitate the work of the referees and editors. LAYOUT AND STYLE Orthodox sequence Title and author&apos;s name, with author&apos;s degrees, titles, position. Synopsis, including a brief statement of conclusions. Title: This should be as brief as possible, yet give a good idea of the subject and character of the paper. Style: Writing should conform to certain prescribed standards. The Institute is guided in its requirements by: Collins, F. H., Authors & Printers&apos; Dictionary-Oxford University Press. Hart, H. Rules for Compositors and Readers. Humphrey Milford (familiarly known as the Oxford Rules). Fowler, H. W. & F. G. The King&apos;s English-Oxford University Press. General: A few well selected diagrams and illustrations are often more pertinent than an amorphous mass of text. Over-statement and dogmatism are jarring and have no place in technical writing. Avoid the use of the first person, be objective and do not include irrelevant or extraneous matter. Avoid unnecessary use of capitals and hyphens, while punctuation should be used sparingly and be governed by the needs of sense and diction. Sentences should be short, uninvolved and unambiguous. Paragraphs should also be short and serve to separate basic ideas into compact groups. Quotation marks should be of the &apos;single&apos; type for quotations and "double" for quoted matter within quotations. Interpretations in the text should be marked off by parentheses ( ), whereas brackets [ ] are employed to enclose explanatory matter in the text. Words to be printed in italics should be underlined singly. For small capitals they are to be underlined DOUBLY and for large capitals TREBLY. If there is any problem in producing formulae accurately by typewriter they should be inserted by handwriting in ink in the copy forwarded by authors. Abbreviations and symbols are laid down in British Standard 1991. Abbreviations are the same for the singular and plural, e.g. cm for centimetre and centimetres, kg for kilogram and kilograms. Percentages are written in the text as per cent; the symbol %is restricted to tables. A full stop after an abbreviation is only used if there is likely to be confusion of meaning. Metric System: The Systeme International d&apos;Unites (S.I.) is to be used for expressing quantities. This is a coherent system of metric units derived from six basic units (metre, kilogramme, second, ampere, kelvin, and candela), from which are derived all other units, e.g. the unit of force is the newton (N) for kilogramms metre per second per second (kg m/s&apos;). Always use the standard metric abbreviations. Commas must not be used for separating groups of digits. For ease of reading digits should be grouped in threes counting from the decimal point towards the left and the right. Illustrations: Drawings and diagrams are to be in black India ink and should be about 18 cm wide. When submitting graphical representations avoid a fine grid if possible. Curves should be in heavy line to stand out. Lettering too should be bold as a reduction in size is often involved in the printing process. (A single column is 8.5 cm wide.) Numbering of tables should be in Roman numerals: I, 11, etc. and figures in Arabic numerals: Fig. I, Fig. 2, etc. (Always use the abbreviation for figure.) Photographs should be black and white glossy prints. As a guide to the printer the author should indicate by means of notes in the typescript where tables and figures, etc. are to appear in the text. Paragraphs: A decimal system of numbering paragraphs may be used when the paper is long and complicated and there is a need for frequent reference to other parts of the paper. Proof correction: Galley proofs are sent to authors for the correction of printers&apos; errors and not for the purpose of making alterations and additions which may be expensive. Should an author make alterations which are considered excessive, he may be required to pay for them. Standardsymbols as laid down in British Standard 1219C shoulrl be used. SYNOPSIS It is most important that the synopsis should provide a clear outline of the contents of the paper, the results obtained and the author&apos;s conclusions. It should be written concisely and in normal rather than abbreviated English and should not exceed 250 words. While the emphasis is on brevity this should not be laboured to the extent of leaving out important matter or impairing intelligibility. Summaries simplify the task of abstractors and therefore should present a balanced and complete picture. It is preferable to use standard rather than proprietary terms. FOOTNOTES AND REFERENCES Footnotes should be used only when they are indispensable. In the typescript they should appear immediately below the line to which they refer and not at the foot of the page. References should be indicated by super-script, thus. . .1 . . .2. Do not use the word Bibliography. When authors cite publications of other societies or technical and trade journals, titles should be abbreviated in accordance with the standards adopted by this Journal. GENERAL The Council will consider the publication of technical notes taking up to three pages (maximum 3 000 words). Written contributions are invited to the discussion of all papers published in the Journal. The editors, however, are empowered by the Council to edit all contributions. Once a paper or a note has been submitted to the Institute, that document becomes the property of the Institute, which then holds the copyright when it is published. The Institute as a body is, however, not responsible for the statements made or opinions expressed in any of its publications. In pyrometallurgical processes, metal oxides are reduced from molten slag through carbothermic reduction. It is of interest to evaluate the reactivity of the carbonaceous materials towards substances such as slag. Characterization techniques such as coal petrography can provide insight into the influence of feed coal properties and how they potentially dictate reductant performance. This study aimed to compare the petrographically determined organic composition of coal to reductant reactivity. Two South African medium-rank C bituminous coals and one anthracite sample were investigated together with high-carbon ferromanganese industrial slag. The reductant reactivity tests were conducted at 1500°C in a muffle furnace to assess the potential of carbonaceous reductant in reacting with the main slag components. SEM-EDS was applied to understand the extent of MnO (and to a lesser extent, SiO2) reduction from the slag. Coal 2, consisting of a greater proportion of vitrinite (59.5 vol% on a mineral matter-free basis and 54.7 vol% including mineral matter) was the most reactive reductant. The anthracite sample, with the highest inert maceral proportions (71.8 vol% including mineral matter and 76.8 vol% on a mineral matter-free basis), was the least reactive reductant.

Industrial effluent from various industries contains heavy metals that are a serious threat to humans, flora and fauna in water bodies, and the environment. The heavy metals are dumped after precipitation, which has serious environmental consequences. In this paper, a 2D axi-symmetry CFD model has been developed to study the extraction of chromium ion from industrial effluent, in a hollow fibre membrane, using Alamine 336 as the carrier and kerosene as the diluent. The Navier Stokes equation was used to predict the velocity profile of the aqueous and organic phases, and species transport equation, which considers both convective and diffusive mass transfer, was used to predict the concentration profile of the chromium ion in the computational domain. The distribution coefficient was experimentally determined at a pH 4, which was found to be the optimum pH. Numerical simulations were performed considering 11.11 mol/m3 of initial feed concentration for chromium ions and extractant concentration of 0.2 M. Corrosion of copper in aerated acidic chloride pickling (0.5 M HCl) solutions and its inhibition by 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole-5-thiol (ATT) have been investigated using electrochemical techniques and weight-loss measurements, along with Raman spectroscopy. Electrochemical measurements for copper after varied immersion periods of 0, 24 and 48h showed that the presence of ATT and the increase of its concentration significantly decrease cathodic, anodic, corrosion (jCorr) currents and corrosion rates (KCorr), as well as the dissolution currents at 300 mV vs. Ag/AgCl, while increase polarization resistance (Rp), degree of surface coverage (?) and inhibition efficiency (IE%) to a great extent. Weight-loss measurements after different immersion periods of 6 ~ 48h revealed that the dissolution of copper decreased to a minimum and the corresponding IE% increased with ATT concentration increases. The detection of ATT molecules on the copper surface by Raman spectroscopy indicated that inhibition of copper corrosion is achieved by strong adsorption of ATT molecules onto the copper surface. The aim of the paper is to discuss the possibility of producing aggregates with an increased content of regular particles, as well as to present a method of aggregate production which has not previously been used in the industry. Traditional aggregate production circuits require the application of three or four grinding stages (depending on the particle size of the feed), but for fine particle fractions of aggregates, irregular grains occur on average with a content of 10%. The innovative technological circuit can produce the aggregates with the content below 3%, even in a single- or two-stage crushing circuit. Downstream jig beneficiation of such prepared material results in higher separation sharpness, lower probable error index (Ep) and imperfection (I). The maximum oxygen intakes of samples of about 30 Bantu, weighing less than 50 kg from different tribal groups (Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho and Shangaan) were measured on a treadmill. The mean maximum oxygen intake of the 164 men was 2,12 litresjmin and only 18 men (11 per cent of the sample) had maximum oxygen intakes of 2,5 litres/min or above (the minimum requirement for such tasks as shovelling rocks and tramming it). The samples of the different tribes differ in age, but when the age effect is taken into account then there were no significant differences between tribes in maximum oxygen intakes. An incidental finding was that both age and body weight correlated significantly with the maximum oxygen intakes of these underweight subjects. Not one of the subjects who weighed less than 45 kg or who was older than 40 years had maximum oxygen intakes high enough to permit their being able to do strenuous work underground. It is clear therefore that Bantu who weigh less than 45 kg or are older than 40 years should not be employed on such strenuous tasks as shovelling rock and tramming it.

It started operation underground at Rowland Shaft in early 2002. This paper covers the results of those trials that resulted in more than 1 100square metres of UG2 being mined.

Teck Metals Ltd operates an integrated zinc-lead complex at Trail, British Columbia, Canada. Since 1997, KIVCETTM flash smelting technology has been utilized for the treatment of zinc plant residues and lead concentrates. Trail Operations’ furnace uses four water-cooled jackets for bullion tapping. This paper provides an overview of KIVCET bullion tapping for the past 16 years, and discusses successes and challenges encountered with respect to operations, training, and monitoring.
