Lonmin Platinum installed a concentrated mode dual-alkali scrubber at the smelter in Marikana in 2002. The dual-alkali scrubber was the technology of choice at that time as a sulphur fixation plant, due to the perceived benefits of handling both the high SO2 concentrations of converter off-gas and the swings in SO2 concentration that are linked to Peirce-Smith operation. Owing to current and impending legislative requirements for air quality and waste, Lonmin is currently considering additions to the dual-alkali plant, but is also evaluating alternative technologies for sulphur fixation. This paper reviews the decision of Lonmin to install a concentrated mode dual-alkali scrubber and presents plant performance achieved. It also describes the important control variables and sensitivities of the plant, and the final product that is produced by the operation of the plant. The legislative requirement that drives the Lonmin technology evaluation is also discussed.

SYNOPSIS Wet high-intensity magnetic separation was examined as a method for the recovery of copper and lead from Tsumeb flotation tailings. Bench-scale and pilot-plant tests were conducted and, despite the very low magnetic susceptibilities of all the complex copper and lead minerals, copper and lead recoveries of over 60 per cent and almost 50 per cent respectively were obtained at a combined copper and lead grade of up to 13,5 per cent. The recoveries were found to be practically independent of magnetic induction in the range 0,5 to 2,2 T, and the grade of the magnetic concentrate decreased with increasing magnetic induction. The grade of the magnetic concen¬trate improved when the flowrate of the slurry was increased, and desliming was found to have a profound effect on the. metallurgical process. Particles smaller than 10 µm were not recovered, and their presence in inefficiently deslimed samples impaired the overall performance of the magnetic separation

The term geostatistics was introduced by Matheron (1960) to cover the development and application of mathematical and statistical models which take specific account of the spatial structure of a 'regionalised' variable. In ore valuation the relative positions of available ore values within an ore body or portion thereof, can only be ignored in the unlikely case where there is no significant pattern of association or correlation between them - that is, if they do not disclose any significant spatial structure. A structure might not be evident in the available data, e.g. where the spacing of the available values is relatively wide such as in surface drilling on a new deep gold mine. However, practical selective mining considerations could dictate the need for eventual underground valuation on a scale much smaller than that represented by this spacing and the possibility of a significant structure on such a smaller scale cannot then be ignored. Some spatial structure must be present wherever the average variability among the values of check ore samples from the same, adjacent or nearby grooves or of borehole cores from the deflections in the same borehole, is lower than the overall variability for ore values within the whole ore body. Another practical check on the presence of a spatial structure is where it is evident that there is or will be a significant variation in the ore grades for individual ore blocks. Any correlation between peripheral and follow-up internal ore block values also provides evidence of a spatial structure, and hence the regression techniques covered in §1.16-1.2 1 can be accepted as the first application of the geostatistical procedures. The spatial structure of a regionalised variable can be studied and measured by the pattern, usually a decreasing function, in the level of correlation or of the covariance between pairs of values as the distance or lag between the values increases, that is, by the correlogram or covariogram (Krige, 1968, 1969, 1976; and Fig. 18). In geostatistics, for various practical and theoretical reasons (Matheron, 1960, 1971), the measure most commonly used is the semivario- gram, which increases as the lag increases. The semivariogram and covariance values are interrelated and for the lognormal- de Wijsian pattern used extensively for gold ore valuation both measures as well as their relationship can be defined on a fairly straightforward basis. Provided the underlying as- sumptions are realistic, the choice of measure - correlogram, covariogram or semivariogram - will be dictated mainly by convenience. Paragraph 2.2 will cover some general geostatistical terms and $2.3-2.12 will deal mainly with the theoretical side of the lognormal-de Wijsian model for spatial structures. Wherever the relevant variable lends itself to normalisation via the 3-parameter lognormal distribution (see 51.9) the de Wijsian semivariogram model is also likely to be suitable and will provide substantial advantages in application. Various practical applications will be covered in Section 3. Although confined to the lognormal-de Wijsian model, much of the theory covered and the general approach is applicable to all spatial structures. [ ]

"This study evaluates the efficiency of using mechanochemical reduction to assist the extraction of zinc from zinc ferrites by alkaline leaching. The transition of zinc ferrite into a metastable state after mechanochemical reduction with metallic iron contributes to the ready dissolution of zinc from the activated zinc ferrites in alkaline solution. Zinc ferrites were mechanochemically reduced under conditions of Fe:ZnFe2O4 mole ratio of 2:1, using 5 mm diameter stainless steel balls as the activation medium at a mass ratio of balls to raw materials of 25:1. Subsequent leaching in 6 mol/L NaOH solution at 90°C resulted in more than 70% Zn extraction. These results may be used to further develop a hydrometallurgical process for recovering zinc from zinc ferrites in alkaline solution.IntroductionZinc is an important nonferrous metal required for various applications in batteries, solder, dielectric materials, and piezoelectric materials. High-grade, easily concentrated ores are becoming scarcer: to meet world demands for zinc, it is necessary to develop economical and environmentally safe metallurgical technologies that use secondary materials such as leach residues of roasted zinc concentrates and electric arc furnace dusts. The zinc in the majority of these wastes occurs in the form of zinc ferrite (franklinite, ZnFe2O4), which is very stable and insoluble in most acidic and alkaline solutions (Langova and Matysek, 2009; Youcai and Stanforth, 2000).Several pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes (Jankovi et al., 2014; Langova and Matysek, 2010; Morcali et al., 2012; Shawabkeh, 2010) have been proposed for the treatment of zinc ferrites. Pyrometallurgical methods are costly owing to high energy consumption and their emissions of toxic gases are considered an environmental problem; hydrometallurgical methods are preferred for process economy and environmental reasons (Copur et al., 2004)."

"Although oxygen is widely employed as the oxidant of choice in gold leaching by cyanide, its low aqueous solubility presents some drawbacks in practical application; hydrogen peroxide has therefore been considered as a possible alternative. The aim of this investigation was to study the catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide, which generates an oxidizing intermediate species, and to understand its effect on cyanide destruction. Operating conditions that facilitated the effective decomposition of hydrogen peroxide were established by varying the pH and catalyst type and concentration. The oxidizing intermediate, detected using an indirect technique, was found to be the hydroxyl radical (OH?). OH? is commonly generated in acidic solutions, but this work demonstrated that it is also produced at the alkaline pH values necessary for cyanide gold leaching. The effects of free and complexed iron and copper catalysts on the oxidation and consumption of hydrogen peroxide and cyanide were also investigated. It was shown that the cyano complexes of Fe(II) and Cu(I) are also effective as decomposition catalysts. Hydrogen peroxide concentrations above 0.01 M decreased the free cyanide concentration, which was attributed to the probable formation of the cyanate anion (CNO-). Although cyanide consumption increased due to its oxidation in the presence of OH?, excessive cyanide consumption in the presence of copper was attributed primarily to its complexation by the unstable copper(I) cyanide species. Rate constants for the decompositions of H2O2 and cyanide by ferrocyanide and copper cyanide were calculated; the latter was identified as being a better catalyst. In this paper, the effects of dynamic loads on the geometry of the failure zone occurring around underground openings, excavated in deep and massive rock masses, have been investigated. Following an elasto-plastic stress analysis of a two-dimensional underground opening under static conditions, dynamic loads have been applied. In the static and dynamic analyses, FLAC2D computer program has been utilized. Maximum ground acceleration value is selected as an input parameter. An index determining the relative size of the yield zone around the opening has been used for comparison of instabilities. In diesem Bericht wurden die Auswirkungen von dynamischen Lasten, auf die Geometrie der Bruchzone in der Umgebung von Untertagehohlräumen, die in tiefen und massiven Gebirge aufgefahren wurden, untersucht. Nach einer elasto-plastischen Spannungsanalyse eines zwei-dimensionalen Untertagehohlraumes unter statischen Beanspruchungen, wurden dynamische Lasten aufgebracht. Für die statischen und dynamischen Analysen wurde das FLAC2D Computer Programm verwendet. Die maximale Bodenbeschleunigung wurde als Eingabe Parameter gewählt. Zum Vergleichen der Unstabilitäten wurde ein Index verwendet, der die relative Grösse der Bruchzone in der Umgebung des Hohlraumes bestimmt. Dans ce papier, l’influence des chargements dynamique sur la géométrie de la zone en rupture observée autour des cavités profondes excavées dans des massifs rocheux ont été étudiées. Des chargements dynamiques ont été appliqués, dans le cas d’une modélisation bi-dimensionnelle de l’excavation d’une cavité profonde, sur la base d’une analyse élastoplastiques des contraintes en conditions statiques. Le code de calcul FLAC2D a été utilisé pour les analyses statiques et dynamiques. La valeur maximale de l’accélération du sol est choisie comme paramètre d’entrée. Un indice déterminant la taille relative de la zone sollicitée autour de la cavité a été utilisé pour comparer les différentes instabilités.

There is a set of settled ideas in the field of the mechanics of rock mass joints, that need a deep revision, after the last experimental works of several authors. In this paper, this theme is approached under several viewpoints, like the following ones: the essential influence of the mating or mismatching of rock joints on their strength (different strength models are applicable to these two situations, one leading preferably to normal scale effects, and the other to inverse scale effects); Patton's model is a bad formulation of the joint strength, whenever there is a dilation effect in the slidings (actually, the essential consideration of the amplitude of the roughess isn't made by any limit equilibrium model, like Patton's model); the joint strength increases as the width perpendicular to the sliding direction is reduced (previous works of other authors suggested the independence of the strength on that width); the reduction of the anisotropy of the roughness, as the sample symmetry and sample dimensions increase; there is no scale effect in the discontinuity mechanics, if there is no roughness heterogeneity; when only the same roughness and undulation orders are involved in the tests, shorter samples have larger peak displacements and lower shear stiffnesses than larger samples (usually, the contrary is admitted). For all these reasons, there isn't an easy correlation between the small scale tests and the natural large joint scale. Only "in situ" large scale tests have some representativeness. All the above mentioned questions are correlated to each other. Es gibt eine Menge eingewurzelter Ideen im Gebiet der Mechanik von Felsklüften, die, nach den letzten experimentellen Arbeiten von mehreren Verfassern, eine tiefe Überprüfung benötigen. Abstract This paper presents the results of a series of creep tests performed on a total of nine samples of Lac du Bonnet granite from the Underground Research Laboratory near Pinawa, Canada. Each of the nine samples were subjected to stresses in excess of 80% of the average uniaxial compressive strength of the granite and were maintained at that level of constant loading for periods of time ranging between a few minutes and several months. Acoustic emission was recorded in order to monitor the development and accumulation of brittle microfracture damage in the samples throughout the long-term loading. According to previously published theoretical predictions and field results, as well as similar experimental results of creep tests in granite, samples should fail when loaded to 70% of their UCS for an extended period of time. Six of the samples did not fail when subjected to stresses in excess of 80% of their UCS over periods of several months and were subsequently subjected to uniaxial compression to failure. The average strength of the samples that had previously been subjected to long-term loading were comparable to the average published strength of this rock. Three of the nine samples had increased end confinement and these three samples failed under long term loading. Résumé Cet article présente les résultats d'une série d'essais de fluage de roche exécutés sur neuf échantillons de granite de Lac du Bonnet, du laboratoire souterrain de recherches près de Pinawa, Canada. Chacun des neuf échantillons a été alors soumis aux charges au-dessus de 80% de la résistance à la UCS moyenne du granit et a été maintenu à ce niveau du chargement constant pendant des périodes s'étendant entre quelques minutes et plusieurs mois. L'émission acoustique a été enregistrée pendant les essais afin d'obtenir des indications des dommages pendant le chargement à long terme. Selon des résultats théoriques précédemment édités et les résultats expérimentaux semblables des essais à long terme en granite, échantillons devrait échouer si chargé à 70% de leur UCS pendant une période prolongée. Six des échantillons n'ont pas cassé quant ils ont été soumis aux charges au-dessus de 80% de leur UCS et ont été plus tard soumis à la compression uniaxiale à la rupture. La force moyenne des échantillons qui avaient été précédemment soumis au chargement à long terme étaient comparable à la force éditée moyenne de cette roche. Trois des neuf échantillons avaient augmenté le confinement de fin et ces trois échantillons ont cassé sous le chargement à long terme. Zusammenfassung Dieser Artikel beschreibt die Resultate von Kriechversuchen, die an neun Proben aus dem Lac du Bonnet Granit des "Underground Research Laboratory" bei Pinawa in Kanada durchgeführt wurden. Jede der neun Proben wurde Drücken unterworfen, die mehr als 80% der einaxialen Druckfestigkeit des Granites entsprechen. Diese Drücke wurden für verschiedene Zeitspannen von wenigen Minuten bis zu einigen Monaten auf einem konstanten Niveau gehalten. Wider Erwarten trat bei sechs der Proben kein Versagen ein, als sie mit über 80% ihrer einaxialen Druckfestigkeit über mehrere Monate belastet wurden; daher wurden sie im Anschluss bei einaxialer Kompression zum Versagen gebracht. Die mittleren Festigkeiten der im Langzeittest verwendeten Proben sind vergleichbar mit den normalerweise für diesen Gesteinstyp angegebenen Festigkeiten. Drei der neun Proben versagten unter der Langzeitbelastung; diese drei Proben hatten eine erhöhte Endflächenreibung.

In recent years attempts have been made to develop software packages for shallow seismic refraction data analysis. In most cases, mainframe computers were used which were generally non-interactive, did not support graphics and were unfriendly to operate. With these facts in mind, a user-friendly interactive processing package written in PASCAL has been developed for the IBM PC. The package allows the following operations to be performed. (1) data tying, equalisation of reciprocal and common shot times; (2) overburden velocity analysis; (3) refraction leg identification on time-distance plots; (4) elevation correction of refractor data; (5) forward and backward phantoming; refraction leg extrapolation; (6) 'bedrock' velocity analysis; (7) 'time-depth' plot computation; (8) depth calculation. Numbers (6) - (8) above involve Palmer's generalised reciprocal technique of refraction data interpretation. The program is extremely flexible and makes much use of interactive high resolution graphics and 'popup' onscreen menus. The velocity analysis sections have statistical routines built in to provide error estimation. The programs allow data interpretation to take place in the field with a portable microcomputer while the data are still being collected; this is obviously not possible with any cumbersome mainframe-based software. Hence it becomes possible to see the effects of varying the data collection parameters (such as geophone spacing) upon the resulting interpretation and so enable adjustments to be made where necessary. Hard copies of the data may be obtained at all stages of the interpretation process using a small (A3) plotter, or the graphics may be dumped to a dot- matrix printer if a suitable plotter is not available.

"The objective of the study was to determine the type and distribution of rare earth elements (REEs) in the phosphate flotation concentrate from the Esfordi flotation plant in central Iran, in order to understand their leaching behaviour. Samples of the concentrate were prepared and analysed using XRF, XRD, ICP, and EMPA. The Ce, Nd, La, and Y contents were 5608, 2227, 1959, and 679.7 mg/kg, respectively. The main REEbearing minerals in the concentrate are fluorapatite, monazite, and xenotime. Apatite is the chief mineral of the concentrate and the ratio of apatite to monazite is greater than 60. From EMPA analysis, monazite contains a much higher proportion of REEs than apatite, but more than 50% of the REE content of the concentrate is in apatite, as this is the main mineral constituent of the concentrate. During the leaching of REEs in the phosphoric acid production process, more than 99% of the total rare earth values report to the large amounts of phosphogypsum (CaSO4·2H2O) formed during the dissolution reaction. Accordingly, two process options are suggested for treating the Esfordi concentrate. In the first option, the concentrate is treated with 98% H2SO4 at 200–300°C. After digestion and water leaching, phosphorus and REEs are precipitated out of solution. In the second option, the concentrate is treated in a pre-leach stage. The process residue from the pre-leach stage is then subjected to acid digestion at elevated temperature for phosphoric acid production.IntroductionThe rare earth elements (REEs) comprise a set of 17 chemical elements in the periodic table, specifically the 15 lanthanides plus scandium and yttrium. REEs and alloys that contain them are used in devices such as computer memory, rechargeable batteries, cell phones, catalytic converters, magnets, fluorescent lighting, and many more (Krishnamurthy and Gupta, 2004). China supplies about 94% of the REE demand, with the remaining 6% coming from Russia and Estonia, the USA, India, Malaysia, and Brazil (Zhanheng, 2011). Increased industrial development in China has prompted the Chinese government to limit annual export quotas to approximately 35 kt of rare earth oxides (REOs), while non-Chinese annual demand is expected to reach 80 kt by the year 2015. This constriction of supply is being met by the development of many new rare earth mining projects, each of which has its own unique mining and processing challenges (Jordens, Cheng, and Waters, 2013). One of these projects is the Esfordi phosphate project, which is located in Yazd Province in central Iran. The concentrate from the Esfordi flotation plant contains 1.2–1.5% REEs."

"The oxidative leaching of chalcopyrite in ammoniacal solutions has been evaluated using electro-analytical techniques and controlled bulk leaching studies. The anodic dissolution process has been established to be a sevenelectron transfer process under nitrogen in ammonia–ammonium sulphate solutions and ammonia–ammonium carbonate solutions, which suggests that the sulphur is oxidized to thiosulphate and the copper and iron released as Cu+ and Fe2+ in these systems. The deportment of Fe2+ and S2O3 2- is affected by choice of the ammonium salt used in the leaching process. In the perchlorate salt, only five electrons are transferred, supporting formation of different sulphur species as proposed for the sulphate and carbonate salts. Scanning electron microscopy and energydispersive spectroscopic analysis of the mineral surface after leaching indicate presence of an iron–sulphur surface layer completely free of copper in the sulphate system, an iron-rich surface layer in the perchlorate solutions, and absence of surface layer build-up in carbonate solutions. XRD analysis of a bulk leach residue from leaching in ammoniaammonium sulphate solutions showed the surface layer to be mostly amorphous (90%). The crystalline content (10%) is composed of 95% polymorphs of anhydrous iron oxide hydroxide FeO(OH). Choice of ammonium salt and the hydrodynamic environment of leaching have been shown to influence the presence or absence of the surface product, as well as its nature. IntroductionHydrometallurgical processes for copper extraction provide a viable route to recover the metal from mixed and low-grade ores, as well as overcome the environmental challenges faced by the traditional pyrometallurgical processes. Chalcopyrite is not only the most abundant of the copper sulphides, but also the most stable, making it recalcitrant to hydrometallurgical processes. Hence, hydrometallurgical processing of chalcopyrite continues to be an attractive area of research due to the vaguely understood surface chemistry of the mineral in different aqueous media. Different routes for hydrometallurgical treatment of chalcopyrite can be followed. These include thermal treatment prior to leaching, direct leaching and direct electrochemical leaching (Venkatachalam, 1991). Direct leaching of chalcopyrite can be carried out in various solution systems, as reviewed by Roman and Benner (1973) and Venkatachalam (1991). Ammoniacal solutions are attractive and effective lixiviants that form stable amine complexes with some base metal cations while rejecting iron. Leaching of chalcopyrite in ammoniacal solutions in the presence of an oxidant is possible due to the stabilization of copper (I) and copper(II) by ammonia at elevated pH levels. In oxygenated ammonia solutions, it has been suggested that chalcopyrite dissolves according to Equation [1] (Beckstead and Miller., 1977a):"

A large body of work exists discussing the impact of grinding media on mineral flotation. Generally, the work indicates that a change to a less electrochemically active grinding environment has positive benefits on downstream processing. There is a fear, however, that these benefits may not be realized when treating low sulphide containing ores, typified by UG2 style deposits. A series of experiments was developed to test the flotation response of UG2 ores using the Magotteaux Mill® to determine if measurable differences in the pulp chemistry could be discerned using a range of grinding media types. Further, the flotation responses of the contained sulphides (chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite) were determined. The data collected provided strong evidence that the grinding environment can significantly influence the pulp chemistry and flotation characteristics of all sulphide minerals, even when the ore contains less than 0.5 per cent total sulphide. The results show that the change to an inert media type produced a substantial improvement in the flotation rate of all sulphide minerals, as well as the PGMs.

The influence of Iscor coke and Delmas coal on the reduction of Mamatwan manganese ore to ferromanganese was examined by use of a variation of the 'stationary charge in controlled environment' (SCICE) technique. The charges of Mamatwan ore and the appropriate reducing agent were heated to temperatures between 1300 and I600 °C and either allowed to cool immediately the required temperature had been reached or held at that particular temperature for periods of up to ... hours. The heating rate was 350°C per hour, the particle size of the ore was between 2,83 and 12,7 mm, and the particle size of the reducing agent was between 2,83 and 6,35 mm. After being allowed to cool in air, the reacted charges were examined by optical microscopy, X-ray-diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and electron-microprobe analysis. No significant difference was found between the changes observed during the reduction of Mamatwan manganese ore by Iscor coke and by Delmas coal. A hypothesis is advanced to explain the mechanism of formation of the Fe-Mn-C alloy.

"In the case of feasibility assessments or feasibility studies, an important point of discussion is often how to calculate the capital (CAPEX) and operating expenditure (OPEX) of a plant. Generally, there is also the request to know how the CAPEX varies when the size of the plant is increased. Nowadays, many databases give an indication of specific equipment costs in relation to the production rate. These data are based on cost information from equipment suppliers and have to be continuously updated by the owner of the database. The approach presented here is a model which allows sizing of process equipment, for example a leach tank, based on process data in combination with the calculation of mechanical properties. Furthermore, it calculates the CAPEX based on construction material cost and adequate machining surcharges. Thus, a single cost model for a leach tank is adequate for both copper and other hydrometallurgical plants and stays valid with changing construction material prices. To summarize, the advantage of this model is the more versatile approach and thus the flexibility due to the inclusion of design aspects, process and mechanical engineering aspects and an updatable database. The database, which is in regard to material cost and is the basis for the cost estimation, is easily updatable from commonly accessible data. This model thus approaches the procedures of an engineering company when designing a plant and executing a cost calculation. INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgy nowadays plays an important role in processing of primary and secondary resources. In copper metallurgy, hydrometallurgy accounts for roughly 20 % of worldwide primary production, especially in the case of oxide or low copper-containing ores. Zinc smelters changed their method of production from a pyrometallurgical-dominated concept decades ago to mainly hydrometallurgical routes today. Gold production processes using leaching, especially, have a long history without any development which would not be competitive if not based on hydrometallurgical concepts (Pawlek, 1983; Winnacker-Küchler, 2006)."

This paper describes the extraction of gold, as the anionic aurocyanide complex, from solution by strong- and weakbase anion-exchange resins. The effects, on the rate of extraction and the loading capacity for gold, of parameters such as pH, temperature, ionic strength, agitation, and the presence of competing anions are reported. The elution and regeneration of strong- and weak-base resins will be examined in a second paper. A third paper in this series will present the results of several smallscale pilot-plant investigations carried out with strong- and weakbase resins In cyanide pulps from various South African gold mines, and will compare the metallurgical performance of resin-In-pulp with that of the carbon-in-pulp process.

Thickening is an essential process in the mining industry and currently one of the most costeffective technologies for recovering water from tailings streams. Improved performance of thickeners can lead to significant energy savings, and increased recovery of water close to the mill. Its performance is directly affected by the rheological properties of slurry at the raking zone. To further understand the dynamics of slurry inside thickeners, a multiphase particle-in-cell method (MP-PIC), is used to investigate its behaviour on a sliding channel. Parameters like particle-size distribution (PSD), rheological properties, and domain discretisation were benchmarked to study its influence on highly dense flows. The slurry concentration by weight of the samples ranged between 60 to 70% of solids by mass, under which conditions it is known to behave like a non-newtonian fluid. An experimental flume, 0.2 m wide and 2 m long, was used for validation under different angles and slurry composition. Visual analysis of the slurry height and shape, as well as velocity measurements, were compared with numerical data. The preliminary results show the ability of MP-PIC method to represent different types of highly dense flows, while still being computationally affordable and practical for industrial use.
