Reduced downtime and maximized availability of mining machines are the key factors in optimizing production rates. As technology moves industry towards an age of ?intelligent machines? it sets the foundation for change in mining equipment design, functionality, and maintenance. Recent mining machine designs are integrating more and more electronic components into the core functionality of individual piece of equipment due to regulatory and legislative requirements, such as TIER rating, as well as from a safety aspect such as personal detection systems. This paper describes the use of existing on-board electronic equipment to increase machine availability through automated maintenance planning and diagnostic fault-finding capability. The automated maintenance planning takes place on the machine itself in order to be independent of the mine?s infrastructure, while the diagnostic capabilities allow for reduced downtime. The paper also presents a concept to transfer operational data to surface to be able to optimize planning of maintenance and to reduce downtime. Case studies are presented where such systems have been commissioned and are currently in operation, the possibilities of this technology application for the future are examined.

It is widely accepted that the type of grinding media has an impact on the grinding chemistry and subsequent flotation behaviour of the sulphide minerals being separated. There are countless laboratory investigations demonstrating that inert grinding media produces more oxidizing pulp potentials, reduced levels of grinding media corrosion products, and superior concentrate grades and valuable metal recoveries. However, taking these results to industrial scale has proved difficult. This paper provides details of the protocol developed and used during a high-chrome grinding media plant trial. It describes the test regime employed to measure changes in pulp chemistry as well as concentrate grades and recoveries to produce a statistically meaningful result. The work also highlighted the need for close cooperation between the metallurgists on site and the researchers conducting the trial. To demonstrate the protocol, data gathered during a plant trail in a PGM concentrate will be presented describing the changes in pulp chemistry and metallurgical response observed.

The Bond standard grindability test provides a Work Index that is widely used to estimate the energy required for grinding, but the test cannot be applied to fine materials such as plant tailings and middlings. For such materials, a comparative grinding test must be used in which a reference material from an operating plant is ground in a laboratory mill to determine the 'equivalent' energy consumption per revolution of the laboratory mill. As the Bond grindability test mill and its operating conditions are specified, its equivalent energy consumption per revolution should be a constant, here designated as B. Once B has been determined, the mill can be used to estimate the grindability of fine materials without the need for reference materials. A value of B can be calculated from any Bond grindability test, and 245 tests that were conducted at Mintek were examined to determine its value. A wide range of values was found, but most of them were grouped around 198 x 10- 7 kWh/rev, which is taken as the best estimate of B that is available at present. Values of B that are not close to this figure are obtained from materials for which the Bond grindability test gives misleading or 'spurious' Work Indexes. These spurious Work Indexes lead to the apparent departure of B from its true value. Some limitations of the Bond grindability test arise from its use of a mill without litters and of screening, instead of classification, to close the circuit.

In this investigation, which was conducted at the Metallurgical Research Plant, Lulea, Sweden, a series of experiments were carried out using a water-model to simulate the gas rinsing of a ladle containing liquid metal. The factors examined include the effect of gas flowrate, the position of a porous plug or lance, the immersion depth of the lance, and the geometry of the bath at the time of complete mixing. Mixing times were recorded by conductivity measurements. The results showed that there is a threshold level for mixing above which no advantage is to be gained from an increase in the gas flowrate. It is suggested that the results can be applied to rinsing ladles in working situations, the levels being approximately 270 dm3/min for 40 t ladles and 780 dm3/min for 150 t heats. The optimum siting of the lance or porous plug is a position that is three-quarters of the internal radius from the centre of the ladle with the lance penetrating as deeply as possible into the ladle. The best design of liquid bath is that having a diameter-to-height ratio of I. An equation was developed for the calculation, by dimensional analysis, of the time required for mixing during gas rinsing, and a comparison of the calculated mixing times with the results from production trials shows a satisfactory agreement (with a correlation factor of 0,91). Thus, an equation is available for the calculation of the stirring time needed to completely mix the bath in production situations.

This paper sets out to consider a specific type of corrosion protection system, which is referred to as a Duplex Coating system. The dictionary describes a duplex system as consisting of two elements or a “twofold” composition. The duplex system described in this presentation is such a two-part corrosion protection coating, viz, hot dip galvanizing as the firm base or primer, followed by a top paint system designed to combat severe corrosive environmental conditions encountered in nature. In principle, the duplex system is a cost effective and balanced, designed coating that is suited to the environmental conditions and service life requirements.

The flotation plant tailings at Kamoa Copper Mine concentrator were found to contain a high proportion of extremely fine particles. The potential issues with settling these fine solids were resolved by the use of a poly-di-allyl-di-methyl ammonium chloride (DADMAC) coagulant, Flobead DB 45 VHM, in conjunction with a standard anionic polyacrylamide flocculant. This paper outlines some of the issues encountered and how they were resolved at the Kamoa concentrator. The potential to use this process and technology at other sites is also considered

The study proposes the Ambidextrous Leadership-Technology Adoption (ALTA) model, which integrates leadership styles such as transformational, transactional, adaptive, and ambidextrous leadership into the technology adoption process. This paper focusses on the identification of operational opportunities in a 1100 tph pellet plant to reduce the specific energy consumption in its comminution circuit, which is designed to process magnetite ore and produce pellets to be used as raw material in the iron and steel industry. The assessment is carried out through a frequency analysis for three of the four processing lines of the plant, consisting of one ball mill each with an installed power of 4.5 MW and 280 tph of mill throughput design capacity. The methodology, as described in this paper, facilitates the visualisation and quantification of plant performance and provides a good first approach to prioritise alternatives for optimisation. In a pellet plant, grinding is a critical stage due to its high energy consumption and its major impact on the physical properties of the iron pellets, which quality depends to a large extent on grind size and Blaine index. From the evaluation that was performed it can be concluded that production line 2 has the lowest specific energy consumption of 15.1 kWh/t, while line 1 has the highest with an average of 16.6 kWh/t for the same type of ore. On the basis of the results and current operational practices, it is recommended to increase the average mill throughput from 240 tph to 265 tph, translating into specific energy reduction of 10%, without affecting the chemical and physical properties of the final product. The implementation of an HPGR for regrinding the magnetic concentrate is proposed to assure adequate specific surface area in case grinding coarser becomes an alternative, which would also be beneficial for the subsequent water recovery stages. Consideration is given to the problem of the estimation, from limited data, of the likely grade and tonnage for a new mining property that is to be exploited by the selective mining of two metals that have substantial contributions to make to the total revenue. In particular, the case of a new gold and uranium mine in South Africa is analysed as follows. (I) The applicability of the underlying lognormal bivariate model for different support (i.e. ore unit) sizes is examined. (2) The necessary parameters for the bivariate lognormal models for different block sizes are estimated from abundant chipsampling data from a section of the Hartebeestfontein Gold Mine using alternative approaches, and the results are compared. (3) A method is given for obtaining the necessary parameters for a tonnage-grade relationship relative to a joint pay limit from the very limited information likely to be available at the end of the exploration stage of a gold mine, and the results are compared with those obtained from the large volume of data available from a minedout area.

Submerged arc furnaces and electric smelters are applied in numerous metal and slag production lines. Particularly in ferroalloy and non-ferrous metal production, like silicon metal, platinum group metals, calcium carbide, and copper, the units are an essential part of the production technology. Most of these electric furnaces are considered to be highly energy-intensive units. The high level of required electrical power is defined by the process. SMS developed several measures to reduce the overall electrical energy consumption of these metal production lines. In particular, the following measures contributes to a lower energy consumption: improved electrical efficiency with intelligent design and application of components, minimizing the heat losses from the furnaces with a balanced cooling/refractory systems, minimization of process steps (such as elimination of agglomeration), recovery of energy, process optimization (resulting in higher metal yield) and the achievement of higher recovery rates, enlarging furnace capacity to reduce heat losses, and maximizing the power-on time. This paper gives an overview of the above-mentioned solutions.

SYNOPSIS A prototype collimated radiometric face scanner was tested in the Harmony Gold Mine. The results obtained during the pilot study indicate that in situ radiometric uranium assays are statistically indistinguishable from those obtained conventionally from channel chip samples. In addition, the study demonstrated that reasonably reliable gold estimates can be deduced from the radiometric measurements, by use of the ratio of gold to uranium within a mine. The instrumentation, calibration procedures, and background determination are described briefly.

"To extend the variety of lump ores that are used in the COREX shaft furnace and to optimize iron ore blending, the original evaluation method for iron ores that was proposed by Voestalpine AG has been improved. Physicochemical and metallurgical properties of iron ores, including Sishen lump ore and CVRD pellets, which are currently used in the COREX process, and three other lump ores, were assessed and compared. Ore matching principles were proposed and five optimized iron ore blending schemes designed and verified by laboratory experiments to prove the effectiveness of the improved evaluation method. The replacement of Sishen lump ore by the alternative L2 and L3 lump ores without varying the proportion of CVRD pellets could improve the degree of reduction and rate of metallization, and decrease the bonding index. Based on the results of laboratory test work and industrial- trials, an ore blending scheme of 60% CVRD, 20% L2, and 20% L3 is recommended for use in the COREX process. IntroductionIn recent years, problems such as environmental pollution and a shortage of coke and coal resources for blast-furnace ironmaking have become increasingly apparent. Based on sustainable developments in the iron- and steelmaking industries, the environmentally friendly COREX smelting-reduction process with low energy consumption was developed and introduced (Zhou and Du, 2013; Song, Lv, and Yin, 2015; Xu et al., 2016; Kurunov, 2010). The evaluation system for lump ore that was proposed by Voestalpine AG recommends that only Sishen lump ore from South Africa be used in the COREX process, because of the stringent physicochemical and metallurgical property requirements. This situation significantly hampers improvements to the technical and economic aspects of the COREX ironmaking process, especially in China (Eberle, Siuka, and Bohm, 2006). No theoretical or technical basis has been provided for the evaluation system, and the assessment approach for iron ores also presents problems that need to be discussed and resolved.The COREX process consists of two reactors: the prereduction shaft furnace and the melting gasifier as shown in Figure 1 (Wu et al., 2017). Pellets and lump ores which are charged to the prereduction shaft should have a good reducibility and metallization with a low degradation index (Li et al., 2016; Wu et al., 2011; Kumar et al., 2009; Kang, Gupta, and Sahajwalla, 2007). The properties and microstructure of the iron ore pellets which are required to achieve a high productivity and a lower fuel rate in the COREX process have been investigated (Umadevi et al., 2011). Some efforts have also been made to investigate the behaviour of lump ores in the COREX shaft furnace, including the disintegration characteristics and the reduction degradation (Umadevi et al., 2011; Zhou et al., 2015; Xu et al., 2013; Li, Feng, and Zou, 2013; Hou et al., 2014). However, few studies have focused on the optimization of ore blending for partial or total substitution of the expensive Sishen lump ore by other, cheaper lump ores to reduce the production cost. The technology for the utilization of blended lump ores in the COREX process is still in its early development stages (Zhou et al., 2017; You et al., 2017)."

The fines produced is not suitable as feed material for the subsequent rotary kiln and the electrical arc furnace. The need for briquetting the ferronickel ore is premised on the minimisation of fine particles in the rotary kiln as well as improving charge permeability in the furnace, and improving overall process safety. Briquetting may be defined as an agglomeration method in which fine particles are compressed under pressure. It consists of three different technologies: vibropressing, roller pressing and stiff extrusion. The current study focuses on evaluating the performance of ferronickel briquettes generated, using roller-pressing technology. Physical properties, chemical properties and metallurgical properties of the briquettes were used to evaluate their performance and quality. Standard ISO tests for iron ore pellets were used. Size degradation as a result of reduction was measured using the ISO 4696-1 test. The decrepitation of the briquettes at the point of entry into the rotary kiln was evaluated using the ISO 8371 test method at a temperature of 700oC. The degree of reduction was evaluated using the ISO 4695 test procedure. Average green briquette compressive strength of 559 N was reported at a moisture content of 16% with an average drop number of 19.1. Increasing the moisture content has a detrimental effect on both the compressive strength and the green briquette yield. The drop number is expressed as the number of drops until breakage, when a briquette is dropped from a 1 m height, decreased with an increase in moisture content. Raise-boring experiences in the gold mines of the Anglo American Corporation Group by J. W. WILSON and P. C. GRAHAM Published in the Journal, October, 1972. Discussion by F. H. Guise-Brown., B.Sc. (Min. Eng.) (Member) INTRODUCTION Messrs J. W. Wilson and P. C. Graham are to be congratulated on an excellent paper containing several thought-provoking remarks. The concept of allocating a machine and equipment valued initially at some R300 000 on an experimental basis is courageous, and the results obtained could be of interest to the mining industry as a whole. The Gold Fields of S.A. Group approached this problem differently. In pioneering the start of this work in South African gold mines, they considered that expenditure of this magnitude would be warranted only if the proposition was viable right from the start. To this end, a Robbins R41 was purchased expressly to assist in the duplication of part of the No. 1 shaft system of the Doomfontein Gold Mine. Mr M. J. Koortsl has summed up the initial results of this work and given some preliminary costing, but inflation since that period has made these figures somewhat out of date.

This paper investigates the recovery of platinum group metals (PGMs) from a dilute cyanide leach solution containing base metals, in a manner similar to that used for gold extraction in a typical CIP process, and focuses on both the adsorption and elution stages. The carrier-phase extraction of precious metals using activated carbon offers significant advantages over other processes in terms of simplicity, the high pre-concentration factor, rapid phase separation, and relatively low capital and operating costs. As a sorbent, activated carbon is still by far the most important material because of its large surface area, high adsorption capacity, porous structure, negligible environmental toxicity, low cost, and high purity standards. Adsorption tests were performed on a pregnant alkaline leach solution (0.15 ppm Pt, 0.38 ppm Pd, 0.1 ppm Au) resulting from cyanide extraction performed in column leach tests. The initial adsorption rates of platinum, palladium, and gold were very fast and recoveries of these three metals were approximately 90 per cent after 2 hours and 100 per cent, 97.4 per cent, and 99.9 per cent respectively after 72 hours. The parameters that influence the extraction of PGMs and Au were examined to assess their relative importance during the adsorption process in order to provide the basis for process optimization. The concentration of thiocyanate was not identified as significant factor for PGMs adsorption, while nickel concentration was the most significant extraction process parameter. Base metal cyanide complexes adsorb and compete with the PGM complexes for sites on activated carbon, and while copper adsorption can be minimized by adjusting the residence time, nickel adsorbs at approximately the same rate as that of the PGMs, influencing the loading capacity and adsorption kinetics of the PGMs. The feasibility of eluting platinum and palladium cyanide complexes from activated carbon using an analogue of the AARL process was investigated. Platinum and palladium elute from activated carbon almost to completion in 4 to 5 bed volumes at 80°C, while the elution of gold at this temperature is slow, with a significant amount of gold still to be eluted after 16 bed volumes. Cyanide pre-treatment was found to have a significant influence on PGM elution. Higher cyanide concentration in the pre-treatment step results in more efficient elution up to a point, and experiments suggest the possibility of an optimum cyanide concentration, beyond which elution efficiency starts decreasing.

"SynopsisThe development of plasma technology at Necsa started in the early 1980s, when the applicability of high-temperature plasmas in the nuclear fuel cycle was investigated. Since 1995, this plasma expertise has expanded to other industrial applications, for example mineral beneficiation, nanotechnology, fluorocarbon production and waste treatment, all of which are also of relevance to the nuclear industry.Necsa has demonstrated the manufacture of plasma-dissociated zircon, zirconium metal powder, carbon nanotubes, silicon carbide (SiC), zirconium carbide (ZrC) and boron carbide (B4C) at the laboratory and pilot plant scale. These materials are commonly used in the nuclear industry. Zirconium alloys are used as fuel cladding material for nuclear fuel assemblies.Necsa manufactured the monomer tetrafluoroethylene (TFE), using 150 and 450 kW DC plasma systems, from which the polymer polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) was synthesized for use in filters and as seals in nuclear plants. With the nuclear renaissance at hand, it was demonstrated that plasma technology can be used to produce hydrofluoric acid (HF), which is used in the manufacture of fluorine gas (F2) for the production of uranium hexafluoride (UF6) directly from the mineral calcium fluoride (CaF2) without the use of sulphuric acid as in the conventional process. The recovery of valuable uranium from nuclear waste such as filters, oils, and solids with plasma processes will also be discussed. The destruction of low-level nuclear waste by a plasma gasification system can reduce the volume of this waste by several orders in magnitude, resulting in huge savings in the storage costs. Another product of plasma technology is the encapsulation process for nuclear waste and the production of vitrified product, which could be used as filler material for medium-level nuclear waste.IntroductionDuring the 1980s, a plasma research and development programme was launched at the erstwhile Uranium Enrichment Corporation of South Africa (UCOR) at Valindaba outside Pretoria. The main purpose of this programme was to develop alternative and more economical processes for the processing and manufacturing of uranium compounds used in the nuclear fuel cycle. The conversion of UO2 (as received from uranium mines) to UF6, which is needed for enrichment, conventionally involves several laborious, expensive, chemical processing steps. Plasma processes can eliminate several of the intermediate steps. Enriched UF6 is converted to UO2, which is pressed into pellets that are used in nuclear power plants. Plasma technology could also be used in a modified and optimized conversion process."

The importance of the chemical and physical properties of lime has been overlooked for years although the quality of lime plays an important role in the production of steel. With the introduction of the oxygen injection process these properties have been re-evaluated. The CaO, MgO, S, and P2O5 contents of lime are important, but so are the physical properties such as granulation, reactivity with respect to slag formation, and the degree of burning. Soft burnt lime enhances de-phosphorisation and de-sulphurisation, and facilitates the smelting process in general, mainly due to its large specific surface. Special lime, prepared as briquettes from quicklime and fluxes or as pellets from limestone and various fluxes with or without binding agents, clearly accelerates lime dissolution during the slag formation process, lowers the melting point, and enhances de-phosphorisation, de-sulphurisatlon, and de-carburisation even more than soft burnt lime. The introduction of special limes in the oxygen injection process for steel production has opened up new fields for commercial exploitation of slags as well as improved operational techniques.

A mine is essentially a series of operations, including drilling and blasting, crushing, milling, flotation, and leaching, that are interconnected and therefore interrelated, with the performance of one operation affecting the performance of another. Optimizing each stage separately without considering the whole system often causes potential economic benefits and energy savings to be missed. However, the PIO methodology is a thorough approach which considers these individual process activities within the context of the whole process. The basic principle is to optimize the process as a whole, rather than each process step in isolation from the others. Metso?s Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) group offers a global consulting service for the mining and construction industries. A significant amount of this consulting work involves process integration and optimization (PIO) studies. When conducting a PIO study, every aspect of the process is considered. In addition to drilling and blasting, transportation, handling and storage, crushing, screening, grinding, flotation, separation, and recovery, other aspects including equipment utilization and energy consumption and even greenhouse gas emissions are also included if necessary. In a PIO project, it is very important to understand what type of material is being processed at any point in time. That is, which domain or domains is the material part of? This is necessary in order to observe the effect of different ore sources (and the blending of sources) on concentrator performance. Linking the ore from the pit to the concentrator required the development of an ore tracking system. As a result, PTI developed a radio-frequency based material tracking system called SmartTag?. This system allows tracking of ore from its source through blasting, run-of-mine (ROM) pads, crushers, intermediate stockpiles, and finally into the concentrator. Using the SmartTag? system, definitive correlations can be made between the performance of the plant and the plant feed characteristics, including the domain from which the feed ore originated. Since its commercialization in 2007, SmartTag? has been used in the majority of PTI?s consulting projects and several permanent systems have been installed worldwide1. Successful applications of the SmartTag? system have encouraged development to allow the system to be used in a wider variety of plants, in particular plants with finer crushing and screening stages. This paper describes how the SmartTag? system is being utilized by PTI and the benefits being gained by its use in PIO projects, as well as presenting some case studies.

"The PGM smelting industry is known for operating at significant high superheats. Both the slag and matte phases that separate via gravity need to be tapped out of the furnace in a safe and efficient manner, which can be achieved only through sound tap-hole management practices. This paper gives an overview of the tap-hole management approach followed in the operations at Lonmin’s Western Platinum Smelter.Five circular AC furnaces are operated, with each furnace comprising essentially a crucible and auxiliary equipment. Within the crucible, slag and matte tap-holes are situated at different elevations. The slag phase is tapped at a higher elevation than the matte phase. At the three older furnaces, tapping is done by the conventional method of lancing open the tap-hole and closing it with a dolly. However, at the two newer furnaces, tap-holes are opened and closed with the aid of a drill and mudgun.Tap-hole management can be divided in a number of aspects. In order to achieve a safe opening and closure every time, Lonmin distinguishes between three important aspects - the design of the tap-hole system, the operating practices followed, as well as care and maintenance. This paper briefly describes the tapping channel and cooling requirements for handling superheated matte, together with the difference in design of the matte and slag tap-holes. Mention is also made of the importance of auxiliary equipment, which includes the launders, fume extraction, granulation water, and mudgun and drill units. Improvements made to the matte tapblock design are discussed.The monitoring, alarm, and safety systems related to matte and slag tapping are described. Tap-hole life and different wear mechanisms are mentioned. Tapping can be done safely only if the tap-holes and equipment are maintained properly. Mention is made of the tap-hole refractory repair practices, and the improvements made in order to reduce repair time as well as to extend the time between deep repairs. The importance of the correct tap-hole clay selection in order to nurse the tapping channel after each tap is also discussed.The paper finally touches on some research and development work that was done in order to improve the monitoring of the condition of the tapblock by means of fibre optic temperature sensors"
