(Visitor) The levels of serum vitamin C in the blood of mineworkers were determined on the first and fifth days of the normal heat-acclimatization period (i.e., before and after exposure to heat) and again after I, 2, and 4 months of underground employment. Supplementary vitamin C was administered to the men during the heat-acclimatization period. Six groups of 20 men featured in the study and, except for one of the two 4-month groups, all the values were obtained after a full shift of underground work. It was found that adequate levels of serum vitamin C were maintained during the heat-acclimatization period, and the 250 mg of vitamin C given daily to each man must therefore be regarded as sufficient. The serum vitamin C decreased significantly with time of exposure to underground conditions, showing that the vitamin C utilized during heat stress is more than that provided in the men's diet. At the end of 4 months, not a single subject had more than 0,4 mg of serum vitamin C per 100 ml, most of them having only 0,3 mg per 100 ml; 90 per cent of the men had had more than 0,4 mg per 100 ml during the acclimatization period. It is therefore recommended that the mineworkers' diets should be supplemented with 100 to 200 mg of vitamin C per man per day.

E. H. D. Carman: The results achieved at Buffelsfontein Gold Mining Company Limited are very encouraging and it seems certain that as far as the conventional uranium recovery process is concerned solvent extraction must entirely supplant the old resin ion exchange process. The operational costs given by Mr Meyburgh indicate that the chief cost items in solvent extraction are reagents. In other words 38.4 per cent of the operational cost at Buffelsfontein is due to the replacement of the organics lost from the plant. It is reported from a wide field of experience that loss, particularly of amine, is a direct function both of the quantity and nature of finely divided suspended solids in the pregnant solution and the extent to which the design of the mixers causes the formation of secondary dispersions which do not easily separate in the settler. There is in addition the unavoidable loss of amine due to its solubility in the aqueous solution which is thought to be about 4 p.p.m. In order to minimise solvent losses therefore, efficient clarification at the head of the solvent extraction plant would appear to be a most important requirement. For this reason the newly erected plant at West Driefontein Gold Mining Company Limited has two Funda Pressure Filters each with a filtering area of 540 sq. ft. which are together designed to handle up to 440 g.p.m. of filtrate. This plant has not yet been commissioned but preliminary testing indicates that suspended solids in the sub micron size range which do not settle even on protracted standing of the solution, will rapidly blind the clarifiers. This should not affect solution clarity but frequent backwashing adds to the cost of precoating. The difficulty was countered in the laboratory with continuous additions of filter aid in addition to the precoat but, as Table 11shows, cost of filter aid is high and its use will have to be optimized against organic losses due to less efficient clarification. This will need much careful observation over a relatively long period of time. Costs shown in Table 11 are based on Mr Meyburgh's figures adjusted to probable conditions at West Driefontein Gold Mining Company Limited. The assumption based on small scale testing is that it will cost 5.2c/ton in filter aid to clarify filtrate to a level of about 5 p.p.m. of suspended solids, in order to restrict the amine loss to 10 p.p.m. which is likely to be equivalent to an entrained organic loss worth approximately only 2.6 cents per ton. Of course poor clarification as mentioned earlier is only one of two or even more causes of organic losses and it seems obvious on the above basis that the operation and economics of pressure clarification will need close investigation. A second important consideration at West Driefontein has been the design of the pump-mixers which must perform the dual function of phase mixing and providing the necessary hydraulic gradient for counter current flow of the two phases. The arrangement is shown in Fig. 1.

Since AlphaGo defeated the best human player in the game of Go in 2016 - something thought to be an impossible achievement - machine learning, deep learning and reinforcement learning have caught the attention of scientists, the media and the general public alike. This recent development in machine learning (let us remember that neural networks have been available for decades now) opens new possibilities in the areas of modelling and process control. However, little has been reported in the minerals processing industry about these new possibilities and opportunities. This paper presents and introduces the topic of reinforcement learning and the different platforms that allow its implementation. The paper shows the consequences of using reinforcement learning for the specific area of process control and optimisation. As an example, the authors present the use of reinforcement learning for the control of a SAG mill closed with a pebble crusher using industrial data from an operation. A comparison with advanced model-based process control is provided, showing the benefits and shortcomings of reinforcement learning as a new control and optimisation technique. "Reference materials have always been important for validating and controlling analytical methods', They have recently become even more important as quality requirements have become more stringent and customer demands for properly verified and controlled results increase. Clients, especially from the resource exploration industry demand critical validation of all results reported. Mintek has been producing geological and semi processed ore references since the early 1970's and recently due to increase in demand other manufactures have entered the South African Market.This paper describes Analytical challenges from the customer's perspective. The customer being the metallurgist, mine geologist, environmental scientist and geologists from resource companies. Reference Materials and their appropriate use and good understanding of them can aid greatly in building confidence in the results, choosing the right Laboratory for a project, deciding which set of results arc correct and providing evidence to the customer's clients that the results obtained are the very best possible.Throughout the world there are hundreds of reference materials produced by over 80 organisations and these are mainly ores, rocks, semi processed ores, metals, and many more. Mintek is one of the top 10 producers with over 75 products. Many of these producers including Mintek and their respective standards organisations belong to the ISO REMCO committee and their respective work groups. This committee's main task is to draw up guide lines for the use, manufacturing and certifying reference materials. In South Africa a mirror committee has recently had its inaugural meeting the function is to give clear mandate to the South African representative on the main ISO REMCO committee, the South African delegate bas an opportunity to influence the contents of the guides.Tile SARM program has since the year 2000 increased its sale three fold, the question is why? There is more accountability needed in our world. That means Analytical results have to be the very best possible and risks associated to them must be well quantified. Consider that the risk of wrong results of wrong decisions made from a result is trivial to laboratory, in comparison to the laboratories customers. The consequence to a laboratory could be a loss of income or some one may lose their job. To the customer he may dig up 1000 of ton's of rock with nothing in it or worse still don't mine it when the grade is high enough. This is seriol1s money."

In considering the available reserves of coal, the author points to the importance of improved recovery, and defines three extraction ratios: the geological extraction ratio (or exploitation factor), the economic extraction ratio (or mining factor), and the geometrical extraction ratio (or volumetric extraction factor). The quality control of a two-stage coal washing process involves several complex components that need to be modelled accurately, to enable autonomous control of the process. The first objective is to develop a method to track the material through the washing process, while ensuring accurate washing prediction models are used. This was achieved through a digital twin model of the Grootegeluk 1 coal processing plant. The model is the amalgamation of manipulating and combining of data-sets from the plant historian, geological wash tables, and mining dispatch servers. This information is then used to control and set the processing medium densities of all 15 modules on the plant, 10 modules in the primary wash and 5 modules in the secondary wash. This controller has been successfully implemented and controlled the plant for 10 days.

Antimony oxide ores are important antimony resources, but their recovery is still a problem. In this paper, the adsorption behaviour and mechanism of dodecamine and quaternary ammonium salt on the surface of cervantite and quartz were investigated. The flotation behaviour of cervantite and quartz using quaternary ammonium salts and dodecylamine as collectors was studied by single mineral flotation experiments. The adsorbed amount was measured and infrared spectroscopy was used to study the ability of several cationic collectors to float cervantite and quartz. The results show that quaternary ammonium salts can simultaneously float the cervantite and quartz. It is difficult to achieve separation of the two minerals using quaternary ammonium salts as collectors. At pH>10, dodecylamine can float quartz but not cervantite, which can achieve reverse flotation separation of the two minerals. The difference between the abilities of quaternary ammonium salts and dodecylamine to float cervantite and quartz lies in the different ionisation properties of the two reagents. Quaternary ammonium salt is a strong electrolyte that is completely ionised in the pulp and exists mainly in the form of quaternary ammonium ions. Although surfactants have proven to increase metal extraction by improving solution flow in porous media, these reagents have not been widely adopted in heap leaching operations because of potential incompatibilities with downstream processes that are subject to surface properties. The BASF leaching aid, LixTRA 118, was previously found to have no significant effect on post-leach operations. This study evaluated its performance in ores of different particle size distributions and the impact on acid consumption and metal recovery. Column leach studies, carried out on a copper oxide ore and mixed oxide–sulfide ore, showed that the effect of LixTRA 118 was more pronounced in ores with wider particle size distributions than in those with more uniformly sized particles. Solution percolation rates increased by up to 18% in the presence of leaching aid, and increased copper recovery and acid consumption. Improved wetting facilitated the kinetics of acid diffusion at macroand micropore level. There was no significant effect on iron recovery

Written contribution by J.F. Curtist The paper is an interesting exercise in the application of mathematics to a theoretical situation presumed to oc¬cur underground. However, some of the assumptions on which the calculations are based are unlikely to occur in any actual mining situation. Assumptions made in the paper Objections to these assumptions are noted seriatim. (1) `it is assumed that any loading-rate effect will be small and can be ignored' (p. 3). A loading rate of the order of 50 kN-12 per cent of the maximum load-is customary to prevent the props being dislodged by the blast. (2) `it is unlikely that all the props will be installed with their full stroke available, but for the purpose of this analysis, it is assumed that this is the case' (p. 3). A more reasonable assumption would be that, with the most careful selection of prop length and the most rigid control of stope width, the available stroke length would on average be reduced by the order of 70 mm on installation-20 per cent of full stroke. (3) `each support unit supports a block of 3,3 m2 bound¬ed by vertical fractures with zero cohesion that are parallel and at right-angles to the stope face respec¬tively' (p. 5). Joughin and Jager have shown this to be an unwar¬ranted assumption in respect of the positioning, the direction, and the dip of the fractures present in a stope in rockburst conditions. If, as assumed, there was `zero cohesion' between such blocks, the removal of a hydraulic prop in row 3 supporting such a block would ensure that it fell out before a profile prop could be installed in the same position. (4) `the height of each of these blocks is 3,0 m, the volume of each block is 9,9M3, the mass of each block is 27 225 kg' (p. 5). The concept of individual props being affected by dis¬crete blocks of known and uniform dimensions of relatively low ground velocities (less than or equal to 2,16 m/s) acting in line with the axis of the prop is one that lends itself to neat mathematical calcula¬tions. It does not, however, bear much similarity to the actual conditions that are exposed underground in excavations where rockbursts occur. Over many decades, numerous feasibility studies have demonstrated, that the production of sulphuric acid remains the most viable option of sulphur recovery from smelter off gas and abatement of SO2 emissions to the atmosphere. This is particularly more pronounced as smaller but more concentrated off-gas flows are to be treated from smelters, and enhanced sulphuric acid processes be-come available. Off-gas handling systems represent a significant capital and operating cost burden to the metallurgical operation. Modern pyrometallurgical smelter processes for sulphide ores based on the use of oxygen-enriched air, produce relatively small off-gas flows with high SO2 concentrations in the smelter gas of 30?60 %-vol. of SO2. This is a prerequisite for substantial cost reductions in the smelter off-gas handling and treatment system. As an alternative to sulphuric acid production, numerous scrubbing concepts with alkali or dual-alkali combinations as well as organic absorbents have been proposed. Also the reduction of the SO2 to elemental sulphur has frequently been studied. Very few of those alternative processes have been built in industrial scale, but all were generally characterized by none sustainable operation due to cost reasons, problems with issues related to chemicals used and by-products or poor availability. Thus the traditional concept of converting the SO2 to sulphuric acid is most common, although regarded as un-economic, but is at least a proven, environmentally sustainable and reliable way of sulphur gas processing. With the high acid price levels these days, operating companies are even able to generate significant revenue with their otherwise ?fatal? acid. Even though smelter gas is available at high SO2 concentrations, in a conventional acid plant one would add large amounts of air to dilute the gas down to a suitable concentration of 12?13 (14) %-vol. SO2. Dealing with higher SO2 concentrations in smelter acid plants is not feasible, as the gas exit temperature of the catalytic oxidation step would exceed the allowable limit for the catalyst. Hence those conventional acid plants are characterised by the use of large equipment, i.e. high capital cost, high energy consumption and limited flexibility. The newly developed LUREC® process can handle off-gas with significantly higher gas concentrations, even in excess of 25 %-vol. SO2. It is entirely based on well-proven equipment and unit operations. The first industrial application, operating with 16?18 %-vol. SO2 will be presented in this paper, along with the fundamentals of the process. It will be demonstrated that the process requires inherently lower capital cost, fewer operating cost, offers better energy recovery and lower emissions as compared to conventional design. While most existing smelter acid plants would have some built-in spare capacity, any significant increase of smelter capacity, say of 30%, can basically not be accommodated without installing an additional parallel new acid plant unit. An add-on LUREC® module can remove any such restriction, while simultaneously de-bottlenecking the existing acid plant. The paper also discusses the present status of the add-on technology for smelter acid plant expansions with respect to technical boundary conditions of different process alternatives as well as economic and environmental aspects. Application of the LUREC® process to modern smelter acid plants operating with high SO2 gas concentration, will lead to a substantial reduction of the specific size of the gas processing equipment and equivalent savings in capital and operating cost. The LUREC® process is patented worldwide by OUTOTEC.

In South Africa reprocessing used oil into industrial fuel is commercially attractive. The reprocessed product is sold as a substitute for heavy fuel oil that is derived from crude oil (Rose Foundation, 2008). The objective of this investigation is to evaluate the use of petroleum products such as oil, petrol and diesel in Driefontein Gold Mine. The recovery of oil through recycling has costs implications to the mine while the release of petroleum hydrocarbons due to the poor management of the use of petroleum products has potential to cause pollution and negatively affect soil and water. Environmental legislation such as the Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act (Act 28, 2002) requires that such negative impacts to the environment be rehabilitated. The rehabilitation cost of pollution caused by petroleum products to the environment increases operational costs in business. Field assessment is conducted to identify the main sources of petroleum product contamination such as leaks in piping, overfills and petroleum spills. The areas that require mitigation would be mapped in the study. Recommendations for mitigation measures will focus on using the best practicable environmental option (BPEO) as well as the best available technology not exceeding excessive cost (BATNEEC). The recovery of oil from the mining industry is generally low and very poor. In this study, the effect of proper management of petroleum products to the mine?s operational costs is investigated and compared to there mediation costs of the impacts caused due to poor management of these products. The study investigates the financial benefit that could be obtained from proper environmental practices and efficient usage of petroleum products in the mining.

Underground mining in high rock-stress environments can induce unanticipated dynamic rockmass deformation, posing a serious risk to the workforce. Data collected by seismic networks are imperative for the design-as-you-mine process. Often an inappropriate assessment of the seismic hazard is done when unnecessary data are included in analytical techniques, particularly short-term time frames. Depending on the methodology or application of data analysis and interpretation, some of the information may not be relevant and even detract from the objective. By using the spatial event clusters associated with active workplaces to define the shape and size of the polygons for data selection for subsequent analysis, a problematic subjective component can be eliminated. The mining of tabular reefs in South Africa, be they gold- or platinum group metals, is very extensive, and underground workplaces are often widespread. Production stoppages are very costly, especially for marginal mines, so there is just cause not to evacuate an entire operation’s workforce following the occurrence of a large mining-induced seismic event. A rationale based on the damaging peak particle velocities (PPV) of the past seismicity can exclude the unaffected underground personnel and allow a quick orderly withdrawal where required. Micro-deformation may precede rockbursting, which can occur on-shift close to the workface. A mine-wide array of geophones suitable for the accurate location and analysis of seismicity may not be able to detect these higher-frequency emissions. Inexpensive but fit-for-purpose accelerometers, providing real-time, continuous measurement of acoustic rockmass deformation near the workplace, integrated through underground and surface communications networks, are shown to record ‘rock-talk’, clearly distinguishable from the instrument background noise, which can be in the order of hours leading up to an imminent damaging seismic event.

The difference in the magnetic properties of minerals is the basis for magnetic separation. All minerals can be generally classified as ferromagnetic (strongly magnetic), paramagnetic (weakly magnetic) or diamagnetic (non-magnetic). Magnetic separation can be conducted dry or wet. The majority of the applications of wet magnetic separation in the mining industry are based on the wet drum magnetic separator. The wet drum magnetic separator has been in use for over 50 years and its design is based on a rotating drum installed inside a tank. Inside the drum are stationary, permanent magnets arranged in an arc to provide the magnetic field. These magnets can be of the ceramic ferrite type providing a low intensity magnetic field or of the rare earth type providing a high intensity magnetic field.

The environmentally acceptable disposal of fine-particled mining and industrial wastes by the formation of hydraulic- fill slimes dams is becoming an increasingly important aspect of the total mining endeavour. Relatively little is known of the behaviour of waste slurries during deposition. n order to validate the borehole analysis valuation procedure commonly used in the South African gold mining industry, a simulated orebody was used to create borehole values which would serve as data for the procedure. After confirming the distribution, calculating the variance size of area relationship, estimating the block variance, and calculating a profit measurement for each set, comparisons were made to the known population parameters. Results show only one overall bias (in the estimation of the lognormal third parameter), which is carried throughout the analysis. The remainder of the analysis is unbiased, validating the procedure.

AUTHORS' REPLY TO DISCUSSION In his contribution to our paper Dr Lloyd makes two criticisms: The first criticism, as we interpret it, is that the agglomerate flotation process that we described is not really necessary because previously described processes effect almost the same results or could be made to give the same results by including sufficient paraffin in the reagent combination.
