The purpose of this project was to compare two underground, batch coal haulers ? battery haulers and shuttle cars ? in order to determine the more viable machine to implement. The specific standards for battery haulers were investigated and compared to the requirements of shuttle cars in order to identify the unnecessary expenses related to the legal requirements that are attached to the machines. Costs such as running costs, capital costs, and maintenance costs were researched and compared over a typical life of machine. Average production rates and breakdown times were obtained and used to determine which machine would be more reliable in achieving the required annual production.

Gentlemen, I think that many of you here, who have to do with the design of mines in an age where costs and difficulties generally, are increasing at a rate which we find almost impossible to keep up with, I would agree with you that we are fortunate to have a band of people like Professor Starfield, and others who are dedicated to producing the tools, and methods which we need to sort out these problems. I am sure that you would agree with me, that the old rule-of-thumb methods are finished forever, that we can never go back to the methods which served us in the past, when we were close to the surface and had not met the conditions which we are meeting now, and which we are going to meet in an increasing degree in the future. It is to people like Professor Starfield, with these clear, completely logically described new methods, that we look for the solution of our problems in the future. I think the whole problem of layout of any mine, is one where you can reliably prognosticate what you are likely to find in a variety of circumstances to meet the wide range of things which must happen when you consider the costs in these modern operations. The demand for rare earth elements (REE) is increasing rapidly owing to the emergence of new cleanenergy and defense-related technologies. China’s dominates the world production of REE. In this paper, we review the ore characteristics of four typical REE deposits in China and discuss the conventional beneficiation techniques, including gravity and magnetic separation, flotation, and hydrometallurgical processing of these ores. Some of the latest laboratory findings and industrial applications, as well as the development of novel reagents for REE processing in China are presented. The REE beneficiation technologies developed and employed in China could constitute a good case study for many other emerging projects being explored around the world.

In almost all branches of industry, machinery and equipment in operation cause vibration. Some sources of vibration affect only the operator’s hands, fingers, and arms, while others have adverse effects on the entire -body. Various types and numbers of machines are utilized in the mining sector, and operators with them are exposed to mechanical vibrations caused by the mining machinery they use. A field study was conducted to evaluate the vibration risks to the operators using mining machines in open pit mines. Vibration levels and whole-body vibration (WBV) measurements using various types brands, and models of construction equipment were evaluated in three different mines in the west of Turkey and compared to the the criteria specified in the EU 2002/44/EC directive and ISO 2631-1 (1997) standards. The results showed that operators using mining machinery for 8 hours were exposed to WBV levels below the EU limit (1.15 m/s2), while 44% of these operators were exposed to levels above the EU action limit (0.5 m/s2). Measurement data collected from the working environment and the recommended improvements that need to be made to reduce WBV exposures are presented.

Cappadocia is not only a region of Turkey with historical and touristic importance. During the cutting and processing of volcanic tuff, quarries in this region release large amounts of tuff into the environment that is viewed as waste. The release of this waste constitutes an economic loss and contributes to environmental pollution. However, through experimentation with deformation, weight per unit of volume, water absorption, uniaxial compression strength, modulus of elasticity, and point load strength index, volcanic tuff and marble dust composite materials can be produced for use in the building sector. In this study it was observed that, as the percentage of volcanic tuff dust in the mixture increased, the water absorption rate of the material increased, and uniaxial compression strength and point load strength decreased. The produced composite samples used in this study were kept for a predetermined number of times per day, and no deformation in the surface characteristics of the materials was observed. In a statistical parameter analysis, averages, variances, standard deviations, coefficients of variation, and skewness coefficients were calculated. Covariance changes between experimental parameters were also determined. In this study, two types of volcanic tuff dust, that is, yellow and red, were produced during the production of tuff-marble dust composite material. When the percentage of either type of volcanic tuff dust was increased, an increase in water absorption was observed. It was also observed that when the percentage of volcanic tuff dust was increased, uniaxial compressive strength and point load strength decreased. Furthermore, the physical and mechanical properties of the materials obtained by mixing different colored tuff powders and marble powders in different proportions were evaluated using statistical parameter analysis.

Dry air classification is a well-known technique used for decades in the cement industry to separate material in the size range of 0.01-1.0 mm. Additionally, in corresponding dry grinding circuits with effective machines such as High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR), the energy consumption can be reduced compared to wet applications. These dry systems are not state of the art in minerals processing plants, but first prototypes have been installed and an increasing number of projects are starting to evaluate this option. One challenge in this field is the mineral composition of ores, which have, by far, a higher variety in density and size than those of cement. High density particles such as iron- containing ones have higher settling rates than low density silica particles of the same size. The main question to answer in this paper is how to evaluate this effect, so a quantitative method using Mineral Liberation Analyses was developed to calculate two-dimensional partition curves. Additional statistical analyses allow for isolation and quantifying the interaction of density and size, enabling engineers to consider this effect for the sizing of process plants. Reprocessing of historic gold tailings is a common activity in South Africa, while base metal tailings offer similar reprocessing potential. The historic base metal tailings of the Namib Pb–Zn mine (Erongo Region, Namibia) still contain valuable resources of Pb and Zn in carbonate-rich matter. Micro-analysis of primary ore minerals identifies some galena as argentiferous and sphalerite as the principal host of Cd. This study demonstrates that knowledge of primary ore mineralogy helps to reveal the hosts of valuable commodities (Ag, Cd) and that field-portable X-ray fluorescence tools allow precise and accurate determinations of major and minor elements like Zn and Cd in such carbonate-rich material. Although there are limitations to directly determine the contents of certain element (i.e., As, Sb, In), linear correlations allow prediction of the likely abundance of these elements. Providing that the inter-mineral and inter-element relations are understood and there is consistency in sampling and analytical methodology, portable X-ray fluorescence analysis is an effective method to evaluate the chemical characteristics of base metal tailings for a range of major and trace elements.

In this present research, a polymer poly (acrylamide-allyl thiourea) (PAM-ATU) with an average molecular weight 1.66 × 104 g/mol was used as a depressant in the flotation separation of molybdenite from chalcopyrite and galena. The micro-flotation experimental results showed that PAM-ATU exhibited a strong influence on the flotation performances of chalcopyrite and galena, but had little effect on that of molybdenite within a pH range of 9.0~11.0 at a dosage of lower than 6.0 mg/L. The flotation results of bulk flotation tests illustrated that PAM-ATU showed a stronger depression power than sodium thioglycollate (TGA) and sodium sulfide. The comparison results demonstrated that PAM-ATU and TGA had an advantage in reducing galena and chalcopyrite impurities in the molybdenum concentrate, respectively. With the combination of PAM-ATU and TGA, a good flotation separation result was achieved through one roughing operation where the recovery of molybdenum in the froth product was over 75.0%, while the recovery of copper and lead were less than 22.0% and 15.0%, individually. It was also found that a molybdenum concentrate with Mo grade of 46.32%, Cu grade of 0.16%, Pb grade of 0.06%, was obtained by a closed circuit flotation flowsheet of one roughing-three scavenging-five cleaning with a Mo recovery of 77.67%. This study explores the use of backfill in hard rock bord-and-pillar mines to increase the pillar strength and extraction ratio at depth. The use of backfill will also minimize the requirement for tailings storage on surface and the risk of environmental damage. A literature survey indicated that backfill is extensively used in coal mines, but rarely in hard rock bord-and-pillar mines. To simulate the effect of backfill confinement on pillar strength, an extension of the limit equilibrium model is proposed. Numerical modelling of an actual platinum mine layout is used to illustrate the beneficial effect of backfill on pillar stability at greater depths. The magnitude of confinement exerted by the backfill on the pillar sidewalls is unknown, however, and this needs to be quantified using experimental backfill mining sections equipped with suitable instrumentation.

Traditional fire assay dates back over 3000 years and has changed very little over that time. The only improvement is to replace the gravimetric finish with dissolution of the Precious Metal bead followed by AA or ICP analysis of the solution. The newly developed FIP A (Fast In-line Fire Assay) method allows full automation of the fire assay process from sample preparation to spark analysis of the Pb button. This results in fully quantitative analyses for Pt, Pd, Rh, Ru, lr, Au and Ag in typically less than an hour after a sample is entered into the system. Detection limits are theoretically Pt 0.08 ppm, Pd 0.002 ppm, Rh 0.002 ppm, Au 0.08 ppm and Ag 0.002 ppm but in practice the lower measurable limits are about double these figures. Few opportunities have been available to present data obtained using the FIFA system as all FIFA laboratories have been in the domain of a Pt mining company which prefers to keep all Pt analytical matters confidential. However, IMP has recently participated in the round robin exercise to establish recommended values for a new series of Merensky Reef and UO-2 Layer reference materials produced by African Mineral Standards. The precision of the results was excellent being on average Pt 2.05%, Pd 1.25%, Rh 4.08% and Ru 4.94% being expressed as Relative Standard Deviation. The excellent precision is a reflection of the efficient collection of POEs in the Pb buttons and the homogeneity of the Pb buttons. However, the accuracy was not as good. The poorer accuracy is interpreted as the calibration of the spectrometer not being as good as desired due to the difficulty in acquiring a suitable range of standards with reliable recommended values for the PGEs. The most recent spectrometer was calibrated with the greatest care and produced slightly better results for Pt, Pd and Rh and slightly worse for Ru.

In view of the limited reserves of good-quality coking coals in South Africa, Iscor has been involved in direct reduction since the middle sixties. Since the early seventies, its interest in direct reduction was stimulated further by a swing towards' continuous casting, which, in turn, contributed to a shortage of the scrap supply for electric-arc-furnace (EAP) steelmaking. "The Kamoa-Kakula copper project—a joint venture between Ivanhoe Mines, Zijin Mining Group Co. Ltd, and the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo—has been independently ranked as the world's largest undeveloped high-grade copper discovery by international mining consultant Wood Mackenzie. It is a very large, near-surface stratiform copper deposit with adjacent prospective exploration areas within the Central African Copperbelt, approximately 25 km west of the town of Kolwezi and about 270 km west of the provincial capital of Lubumbashi. A phased development approach is currently envisaged. The first phase of the project involves the development of a 6 Mt/a underground mine and surface processing complex (dual stream concentrator) at the Kakula deposit, a discovery announced in early 2016. The second phase involves an integrated 12 Mt/a two-stage development, beginning with initial production from the Kakula mine, to be followed by a subsequent, separate underground mining operation at the nearby Kansoko mine, along with the construction of a smelter. Project description and locationThe Kamoa–Kakula project comprises a newly discovered, very large stratiform copper deposit with adjacent prospective exploration areas, located within the Central African Copperbelt in Lualaba Province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The Kamoa–Kakula project lies approximately 25 km west of the town of Kolwezi and about 270 km west of Lubumbashi. Ivanhoe owns a 49.5% share interest in Kamoa Holding, an Ivanhoe subsidiary that currently owns 80% of the project. Zijin Mining owns a 49.5% share interest in Kamoa Holding, which it acquired from Ivanhoe in December 2015 for an aggregate cash consideration of US$412 million. The remaining 1% interest in Kamoa Holding is held by privately-owned Crystal River.The Kamoa–Kakula project consists of the Kamoa exploitation licences (exploitation permits 12873, 13025, and 13026, which cover an area of 397.4 km2) and one exploration licence (exploration permit 703 covering an area of 12.74 km2). The Kamoa exploitation licences, approved 20 August 2012, grant Kamoa Copper the right to explore for, develop, and exploit copper and other minerals, for an initial 30-year term, expiring on 19 August 2042. The permits can then be extended for 15-year periods until the end of the mine’s life."

Newmont is one of the few remaining large mining companies that was established in the early nineteen hundreds. The company has a long, colourful and enviable history. This paper provides highlights of Newmont?s business and technical history since its inception in 1916, its transition to a ?gold only? company in the early 1990s and progress since that time up until the present day. Details of Newmonts current gold operations and its gold production profile for 2008 are also provided in the paper Over the last 50 years Newmont has developed a host of innovative gold technologies to meet the challenges of treating the complex refractory gold ores, found at the company owned mines in the Carlin region and around the world. Details of the technologies are provided and they include chlorination, roasting, bacterial and pressure leaching, leaching gold with thiosulphate and thiocyanate, N2Tech flotation, HPGR treatment of hard and abrasive ores and, finally, the use of Hydro-Jex technology for improving gold recovery from heaps.

The Elizabeth Bay aeolian deposit in Namibia comprises a sedimentary package of diamondiferous grits that have been deposited, reworked and concentrated to various degrees by dominant southerly winds. Diamond concentration in these deposits is highly variable and often unpredictable. The deposit is marginal from an economic perspective and therefore requires selective mining which in turn requires correct sampling and accurate estimation. Three methods of sampling have been used at Elizabeth Bay for mineral resource estimation: (i) pit samples utilizing an excavator to produce a sample 1 to 3 metres deep with a 10 to 20 m2 footprint, (ii)GB50 grab sampling with a 3.34 m2 footprint and (iii) a BG36 bucket auger drill with a 5 m2 footprint. Pit sampling, being easy to execute, has been the most widely used despite a limited penetration ability and, at times, questionable integrity. The GB50 grab sampling tool was tested at Elizabeth Bay and although it had better penetration ability and sample integrity, it struggled with cemented horizons. No sample optimization was conducted prior to the GB50 grab sampling. The latest phase of sampling was conducted using a BG36 bucket auger drill which is capable of penetrating thick overburden, penetrate cemented horizons and provides an acceptable sample support size. Geostatistical simulation methods were applied to establish the optimum sampling parameters required to estimate a mineral resource at an indicated level of confidence. The results show that a 5 m2 sample support size is adequate and that a 50 m 100 m sample configuration is optimal. Sample data obtained from the three methods confirms that the BG36 bucket auger tool combined with the parameters identified in this exercise produce the best results for diamond resource estimation.

"This paper provides a progress update on three tapblock monitoring technologies that Hatch has been developing with our clients for non-ferrous smelting furnaces.The Tapblock Diagnostic System (TDS) is an advanced on-line monitoring system that uses temperature data along with embedded thermal model results to evaluate the condition of a tapblock over its campaign life. Hatch recently installed a second Tapblock Diagnostic System, some details of which are provided in this paper.The Tap-hole Acoustic Monitoring (TAM) system is installed on water-cooled copper tapblocks and uses the noise from the tapping channel to provide a qualitative indication of wear and deterioration of the tapping channel refractory. In addition, TAM can be used to monitor drilling and lancing performance, and potentially could also be used in the future as a guide for automatic drilling and lancing systems (Sadri et al., 2008).The third technology is the use of fibre optic sensors to measure temperature on the hot face and in the tapping channel of a tapblock. Fibre optic technology allows installation of numerous sensors in key locations where they are very sensitive to tapblock condition and also provide more extensive spatial coverage than is possible with traditional instruments. This paper provides an update on our efforts to address issues with premature failure of the sensor cables due to corrosion, and also converting the vast amount of data from the sensor cable into information that can be used by furnace operators."

Muckpile fragmentation formed by blasting depends on the specific charge factor, the discontinuities in the rock mass, and the rock strength. Determination of the discontinuity characteristics and rock strength is a long and difficult process. These two parameters are directly associated with the rock drilling speed. Therefore, it is the drilling speed of the machine used for the blast-hole, rather than the blasthole discontinuity characteristics and rock strength parameters, that is used in the prediction of muckpile fragmentation before blasting. Primarily, it has been suggested that the muckpile fragmentation values can be correctly determined by establishing correlations between the efficiency of the loader and muck pile fragmentation, since fragmentation is directly correlated with the former parameter. Subsequently, a correlation predicting the drilling speed of the drill machine was developed according to the discontinuity characteristics of the blasting surface and the rock strength. Finally, a correlation was developed predicting muckpile fragmentation according to the specific charge factor and the drilling speed of the drill machine The data was obtained by conducting blasting tests in two different limestone quarries.

The science of soil mechanics is 100 years old, and rock mechanics is about 80 years old. While methods of analysis and design have been developed and have evolved over time, these are relatively young sciences. The rapid increases in computing power and new technologies have enabled more sophisticated modelling and monitoring. However, there are still many aspects of soil and rock mechanics that are not well understood. Geotechnical failures, which have major consequences, still occur. These consequences may include environmental damage, major production holdups and associated loss of revenue, damage to infrastructure, and loss of life. High-consequence events, which are rare, are more difficult to anticipate and to design for, because by their nature they involve extraordinary circumstances or conditions, often geological in nature. The risks are usually mitigated by conservative designs and monitoring. Detailed geotechnical investigations help us to understand the natural variability of soil and rock masses and identify unusual or unexpected conditions. Investigating and researching major geotechnical failures is essential to enable these unusual circumstances to be anticipated. In the past, severe unanticipated events may have been treated as natural events or ‘acts of God’. However, society now has much greater expectations and it is essential to have policies and procedures in place that enable appropriate management of these rare, high-consequence risks. A good example is the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM), which was introduced after the catastrophic dam collapse at Vale’s Corrego de Feijao mine in Brumadinho, Brazil. The address will explain the concepts of uncertainty and variability, and how they should be taken into account in geotechnical design. The challenges facing geotechnical engineers, mine owners, and managers will be discussed. referencing a number of real case studies.

The paper discusses the treatment problem of mine (waste) water for enterprises of the Russian Arctic. The wide range of relevant pollutants, financial resources, the availability of land for the construction of a treatment plant, waste generated during the treatment process are some of the factors controlling current and future process design solutions. All mining operations have adopted water treatment and water quality monitoring solutions, however there is no single approach to the problem and each industry participant operates within the scope of its available resources. The range of existing and emerging methods is extensive — from using constructed wetlands for the deposition of mineral nitrogen compounds in settling ponds, reagent deposition and chemical coagulation in exhausted mine workings, and filtering dams on the surface to retrofitting existing mine drainage treatment plants with the adoption of the electrochemical coagulation process. Methods of wastewater treatment from heavy metals, oil products, and nitrogen compounds are demonstrated in the example of two industrial facilities in the Murmansk region. It was found that the use of electrochemical coagulation provides effective treatment of mine water from NO3, NO2, Ni, Fetotal and petroleum hydrocarbons (the degree of purification from 50.5-99.7%), the use of phytotreatment system provides wastewater treatment from ammonium ions and nitrite ions by 53-84%, nitrate ions - by 22%.
