"The Bureau of Mines exploratory work on the Bear Lodge, Wyo., fluorite property wider the strategic minerals Program was completed in November 1944. Exploration consisted of surface trenching, shaft sinking, and drifting at shallow depth. Doak C. Cox of the Federal Geological Survey visited the area during the latter part of 1944 and napped the Bear Lodge property.The Bear Lodge property is situated in the Black Hilts National Forest in eastern Crook County, Wyo., 6 miles north of the community of Sundance (fig. 1). Sundance is 29 miles northwest of Upton, Wyo., a station on the Chicago, Burlington, & Quincy Railroad and 43 miles southwest of a siding on the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad, 3 miles south of Belle Fourche, S. Dak. U. S. Highway 14 passes through Sundance in an east-west direction. Sundance may be reached from the south over U. S. Highway 85 and Wyoming State Highway 585.The Bear Lodge property i a situated in the Boer Lodge Mountains in secs. 15, 22, and 23, T. 52 N., R. 63W., 6th P.M.The topography in the vicinity of the fluorite deposits consists essentially of rounded hills which slope gently to the valley floors. Near the north end of the Property the terrain steepens locally, and the canyon walls are Precipitous along the courses of several streams. There is an adequate supply of water and native timber for mining purposes. The average elevation near the deposits is 5,700 feet.The climate of the region is relatively moderate. The summers are usually warm, with frequent rainstorms. Temperatures often fall below zero during the winter months. Snowfalls are moderate to heavy.Fluorite occurrences in the Bear Lodge area have been known since 1914; however, fluorite was not discovered on the Bear Lodge property until 1943, when prospectors working on a nearby manganese deposit found fluorite mineralization in the limestone. No production has been recorded from the property."

The Veta Chica and Cerro Colorado chromite deposits of the McGuffy Creek area, Siskiyou County, Calif. were selected as worthy of investigation by the Bureau of Mines in accordance with the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939. These were two of many chromite deposits examined by engineers of the Bureau of Mines during their extensive wartime mineral examination and exploration campaign. Exploration by the Bureau of Mines consisted of 2,234 feet of diamond drilling, surface trenching, and sampling during the months of May and June 1942.

This is the first report published by the Bureau of Mines on washability characteristics of coal from beds in Tennessee. It is based principally upon screen-sizing and float-and-sink tests of raw coal from a bed on the Cumberland Plateau. Stripping operations were undertaken recently on this bed by the Cumberland Collieries, Inc., near Chalybeate,Van Buren County, Tenn. The bed has not been definitely correlated, but it may be an extension of the Sewanee bed, which has been mined extensively in the Tracy City district to the south-vest and at points near Dunlap and Pikeville to the southeast and east. It was spoken of by officials of the Cumberland Collieries as the Sewanee bed at the time of sampling for this study. In a letter dated October 16, 1948, W. D. Hardeman, geologist of the Department of Conservation, Nashville, Tenn., states: "The stripping operations of the Cumberland Collieries near the old postoffice at Chalybeate are, I am fairly certain, in the upper part of the Whitwell shale, which carries the Sewanee coal. This coal may be a stray seam, but it probably can be correlated with the Sewanee coal, which is mined farther east. "There are no detailed geologic maps or reports covering the area, and this opinion is based on what was observed in visiting the strip mines in that general vicinity." The laboratory work upon which this report is based was done at the Southern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama and the Cumberland Collieries, Inc.

This Bureau of Mines report presents a finite element analysis of roof stresses associated with a 4-foot-high by 18-foot-wide underground coal mine entry. This analysis starts with known loading conditions determined in an underground coal mine in West Virginia and is extended to other possible underground loading conditions. The roof failures predicted by the finite element analysis under known loading conditions correlate well with the roof failures observed underground. The most probable failure modes are identified for the various loading conditions considered. Various failure preventive measures are discussed.

This compilation of statistics covering competitive fuels consumed for heating of residential and commercial buildings is in response to numerous requests for data of this nature to show the relative changes in the demands for the different fuels in recent years. The figures presented cover the amounts of various fuels ant electric energy reported as used for heating dwellings and commercial buildings. However, the totals for gaseous fuels and electricity necessarily include amounts consumed for both cooking and lighting purposes, as these associated household uses could not be readily broken out. A deep cutting continuous miner, HH456, was tested under production-mining conditions at the Joanne Mine, Rachel W. Va., for about 1 ½ years (226 production days). The miner was run in two modes: a low head-rpm, deep cutting and high rpm, shallow-cutting mode. These tests confirmed that deep cutting and slow cutter speed reduce respirable dust significantly under production mining conditions. Quantitative reductions in dust, in deep vs shallow cutting, were 73°; in return air and 63% at the operator's location. Production rate, (tons/shift), and bit consumption rate did not show any relationship to deep or shallow cutting. Reliability and maintainability of the miner were worse in deep cutting mode due to cutter drive shaft failures; the cutter shaft problem was solved through improved material and design. This paper is the twelfth of a series on smelting in the lead blast furnace and the fifth dealing with blast-furnace gases. It was noted in Report of Investigations 2957 that the gases evolved from the top of the lead blast furnace at Tooele were similar in composition to those from the top of an iron blast furnace. It was noted in Report of Investigations 3095 that at Kellogg, where a smaller percentage of coke on charge and shorter stock column were employed, the gases evolved were much less reducing. At times there was a considerable amount of oxygen in the top gases at the second plant. More SO2 was also evolved from sulphides in the charge. Then operations were conducted as at Kellogg, the gases were alternately reducing and oxidizing. This paper deals with the gases evolved in smelting a charge containing more zinc than at either of the other two plants with about the same amount of coke as was used at Kellogg,: To compare other factors influencing the composition of the gases, it may be noted that at Tooele the approximate height of the charge column was 15 feet, at Kellogg 9 feet and at Trail 13 feet. The furnaces have about the -same cross-sectional area- tog. The furnaces at Tooele are about 6 inches wider at the tuyeres, being 54 inches wide against 48 for the other two plants. At Tooele and Kellogg the furnaces are fed at the top from bottom-dump cars. At Trail the charges are dumped from Decauville cars (bottom cars which dump when tilted), which run on tracks placed on both sides of the blast furnaces. The hoods through which the waste gases are conducted are directly above the shafts of the furnaces. The flues for removing the effluent gases lead off from under the charge floor at Tooele and Kellogg. (Charging and distribution of the feed in the furnace covered later in a rate paper of series.)

In 1987, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied 13,374 acres of the 14,994-acre Ireteba Peaks Wilderness Study Area (NV-050-438) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Clark County, NV, about 4 miles south of Nelson, NV. No identified resources were found within the Ireteba Peaks study area, although there are identified subeconomic resources just outside of the study area boundary. Most of the area is underlain by Tertiary granitic rocks, which apparently postdate mineralization. The area is virtually surrounded by mining districts with mines developed in older rock units. On the north side, quartz monzonite, volcanic tuff, and tuffaceous sediments in the Eldorado mining district host deposits of gold, silver, copper, zinc, and mercury. On the south side, Precambrian gneiss, intrusive andesite porphyry, and hornfels in contact with Quartz monzonite in the Searchlight mining district host gold, silver, copper, and lead deposits. The Newberry mining district to the southeast had copper, gold, and silver mineralization in Precambrian gneiss and andesite.

"A procedure for evaluating the size/specific gravity distribution of ultrafine coal and the distributions of sulfur and ash with respect to particle size and specific gravity is described. The procedure is essentially an extension of the conventional coal washability technique in which special precautions are taken to ensure particle dispersion in the heavy organic liquids, centrifuges are used to obtain adequate separation rates, and micromesh sieves are used for size separation at fine sizes. An example of the application of this technique to the evaluation of the extent of liberation of sulfur and ash in a coal sample ground to 90Z passing 200 mesh (74 um) is described.INTRODUCTIONIn order to determine the potential for deep cleaning of coal by fine grinding to liberate sulfur and ash-forming minerals, it is necessary to obtain data on the distributions of these species by size and specific gravity. In conventional coal processing operations, this information is obtained by means of a standard ""washability"" analysis. Attempts to extend this procedure to ultrafine coal, however, have generally been unsatisfactory and have often led to unreliable and inconsistent results [11. The present authors have described a modified washability procedure in which cumulative specific gravity fractionation is combined with sub-sieve size analysis (by laser diffraction/light scattering) to determine the particle size/specific gravity distribution of ultrafine coal [2]. Unfortunately, because this technique does not involve separation of the individual fractions, only limited information can be obtained on the specific distributions of sulfur and ash.The objective of the work described in this paper was to develop and evaluate a procedure for size and specific gravity fractionation of ultrafine coal and to use conventional analyses for sulfur and ash to determine their relative distribution in the coal. The procedure is essentially a simple extension of the standard washability analysis [3] but incorporating special precautions for treating ultrafine particles.EXPERIMENTAL Material The material used in the development and evaluation of the ultrafine coal fractionation procedure was a medium volatile bituminous coal from the Lower Kittanning seam. A sample of the coal (nominally - 1/4 inch), obtained from the Penn State Coal Data Base, was ground to 90% passing 200 mesh by the following two-stage grinding procedure: About 2 kg of the as-received coal were ground to about 30Z passing 200 mesh in a Model 4-E Quakertown mill (""coffee grinder""). About 1 kg of this product was then ground to about 90Z passing 200 mesh in a Holmes Model 300 Pulverizer."

During early development of the blast furnace, Connellsville coke made entirely from Pittsburgh-bed coal proved to be an excellent fuel. The need for blending coking coals arose as the industry grew and it became necessary to carbonize coals having voking properties inferior to those of Pittsburgh coal Most coals carbonized today in continental Europe and this country are blonded: This practise has improved the quality of coke and permitted the utilization of coals that would yield inferior coke, if carbonized sepa- rately, The depletion of the world's better coking coals, which has been noted by leading coal technologists,2/4/wes accelerated during the recent war and. It is important, therefore, that reserves be evaluated and conserved. In the principal, steel-producing sections of this country, Pocahontas coals have been blended so extensively that the terms "low-volatile coking coal": and. "Pocahontas" have become virtually synonymous. Other low-volatile coals. have been used to manufacture metallurgical coke and will be used more extensively as, the supply of the better known and more accessible Pocahontas coals decreases. Recognizing the need for augmenting the supply of high-rank coking coals, the Bureau of Mines has included both low- and medium-volatile coals in its Survey of the Carbonizing Properties of American Coals, which was started with the cooperation of the American Gas Association in 1929. Twenty coals, 12 of low-volatile and 8 of medium-volatile rank, have been blended with high-volatile A Pittsburgh-bed coal, and five standard low- volatile coals have been blended with various high-volatile coals. Many attempts have been made to develop methane detectors that will be safer and more accurate than the flame safety lamps used to detect methane in mines. The development has taken two general forms, namely: (1) Methane detectors, in which the evidence of methane depends entirely upon changes in the appearance of the detecting element, such as a flame or filament; (2) indicating methane detectors or those equipped with scales upon which the approximate percentage is definitely indicated. As an aid in the development of suitable detectors, the United States Bureau of Mines has assembled and published in its Schedule 8B a set of minimum requirements which tests and experience have shown desirable for methane detectors. Any manufacturer may submit his detector for inspection and tests leading to approval under this schedule.

The Capital Mine is one of, the more important zinc mines in Lawrence County, Mo. Owing to the urgent need for additional zinc during the war and the available facilities for the treatment of zinc-lead ores at the property, the Bureau of Mines examined the mine during July and August 1942 and selected it for further investigation by churn drilling, which was accomplished in the fall of 1943 and spring of 1944. At the conclusion of the drilling on the Capital holdings, the Greenland property, immediately south, was investigated by drilling two additional holes. Results of the investigation are presented in this report.

The J. B. fluorite deposit is in the Washington mining district, southwestern Beaver County, Utah (fig. 1). Fluorite outcrops were found during 1942, and three lode claims wore located. Little work was done on the property until October 1943, at which time the Bureau of Mines started development to determine the subsurface extent of the fluorite mineralization exposed at the surface. The most prominent rocks in the J. B. mine area are porphyries, which vary considerably in composition. Dacite porphyry appears to be the most common host rock for the fluorite-quartz-calcite lenticular masses. The dacite porphyry in the area is highly brecciated over a strike length of more than 1 mile. Fluorite deposits in the brecciated zone cover a strike length of approximately 400 foot. The fluorite lenses range in length from 40 to 200 feet and in width from 4 to 10 feet (fig. 2). The Bureau of Mines work on the J. B. property was started in October 1943 and completed in October a year later. The work consisted of surface trenching by bulldozer and hand methods, shaft sinking, drifting, and crosscutting. Eleven trenches totaling 1,800 linear feet were excavated. An inclined shaft was sunk to a depth of 105 feet, and from thin shaft 577 feet of drifts and crosscuts were driven to outline the extent of the mineral deposit (fig. 3). Two hundred ninety-seven samples were taken in the surface trenches and underground workings. The locations of the samples and analyses arc shown in accompanying figures and tables. Results of metallurgical tests comprise the concluding section of this report.

"An airborne dust study was undertaken at a Southwestern Pennsylvania underground bituminous coal mine by the Pennsylvania Department of Mines and Mineral Industries in 1964 for the purpose of making recommendations and requirements regarding compliance with health and safety aspects of The Bituminous Coal Mining Laws of Pennsylvania, approved by the legislature on July 17, 1961. The study was designed to accurately represent the airborne dust conditions of the subject mine. Sampling by midget impinger of specific worker locations throughout the mine was accomplished. Sample analyses yielded dust concentrations to mppcf, particle size determinations in cumulative per cent less than specified cut-off diameters, and determinations of free silica percentages in total dust samples. The data from this study is further analyzed, and the results are presented.INTRODUCTIONThe Bituminous Coal Mining Laws of Pennsylvania, enacted in 1961, prompted a study of respirable coal mine dust by the Department of Mines and Minerals Industry in 1964. In recognition of their obligation for ensuring the health and safety of bituminous coal miners, the department set out to characterize the airborne dust of mines throughout the commonwealth. The purpose of the studies was to make recommendations and requirements for compliance with the law and for control of airborne coal mine dust in Pennsylvania mines.One such study was undertaken at an underground bituminous coal mine operating in the Pittsburgh Seam in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The study was desig11ed to sample specific worker locations throughout the mine site and characterize the respirable dust relative to each of them. A midget impinger was used to gather respirable range dust samples during an 8-hour shift. Continuous miner operator, roof bolter, stoper bolter, loading machine operator, shuttle car operator, gathering motorman, mainline motorman, and rotary dumper jobs were sampled underground. In addition, barge mover, coal sampler, fine coal operator, heavy media operator, and boiler room attendant occupations were sampled on the surface. The surface sampling was over a 71-hour shift because of UMWA contract provisions."

The Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation of the Nightingale tungsten deposit about 38 miles north of Fernley, Nev., from September 1939 to March 1940, to determine possible resources of tungsten ore. The property was owned by the Gold, Silver & Tungsten, Inc., which maintained its offices in Boulder, Colo. Ore was discovered in 1917, and some ore was mined in 1918 and treated in a mill at Toulon, a station on the Southern Pacific Railroad, 40 miles east. Same shipments were made since 1918, but no production figures are available. The ore is mined from nearly vertical tactite bodies at the limestone-granite contact. The Bureau of Mines excavated 944 linear feet of trenches, drifted 52 linear feet, sunk a shaft 20 feet in depth, sampled the underground workings by cutting 743 linear feet of channels, sampled the surface trenches by cutting 415 linear feet of channels, and drilled 9 diamond-drill holes, totaling 3,000 feet. The ensuing sections note the location and physical features of the district and specify the property and ownership. The history of the mine is briefed, and the geology and mine workings are described. The work done by the Bureau of Mines is summarized and supplemented in detail by assay maps, logs of diamond-drill holes in appendix A, and a table of sample analyses in appendix B.

The present lists supplement those in Bulletin 543. Permissible Mine Equipment Approved to January 1, 1953; Information Circular 7722, Permissible Equipment Approved During the Calendar Years 1953-54; and Information Circular [40], Permissible Equipment Approved During the Calendar Years 1955-56. These [ew] lists also contain equipment meeting those standards revised since the last listing. A revision of Schedule 16C (now Schedule 16D4/) was officially approved on September 28. 1958. Schedule 29 was another standard revised in 1958. The revision was officially approved on September 8. 1958, and is known as Schedule 29A5/ .

"INTRODUCTION The Eunice field is one of a group in southeastern New Mexico producing oil and gas from so-called limestone-type reservoirs in which the productive strata are dolomite or dolomitic limestone ordinarily, wells in reservoirs of this type show wide differences in their productive characteristics, indicating erratic variations in porosity and permeability. Often there is a large difference in total footage of actual ""pay"" penetrated in neighboring wells and the vertical distribution of the ""pay"" within the productive strata varies. In the Eunice field there are few easily recognizable geologic markers to indicate true structural conditions of the oil-productive section, due to horizontal and vertical gradation in chemical compositions and lithologic characteristics of the strata. Geologic markers are found some distance above the oil-producing zones in this field and consequently they indicate only the general structure. Furthermore, no direct relation has been found between the general structure and the accumulation of oil within the reservoir.Many problems in well-completion and production practice have been met in the Eunice field because of erratic variations in porosity, permeability, in vertical distribution of ""pays,"" and the apparent departure from ordinarily accepted relations of oil accumulation to structure. A detailed study of the position and characteristics of the oil- and gas-producing zones aids production procedure. The methods employed in studying the Eunice field, discussed in this paper, may be applicable to other limestone-type reservoirs."

As part of a continuing effort to reduce the weight and bulk of equipment that mining personnel must carry underground, the Bureau of Mines and the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) investigated accurate and convenient gas samplers for use by mine inspectors in sampling mine atmospheres. The samplers are septum-stoppered glass vials commonly used for routine blood sampling. These lightweight, compact samplers yield results comparable with those obtained with conventional bottle samplers of 250-ml nominal capacity.

"This paper presents a laboratory simulation of regrinding and resulting dust generation. An Automated Rotary Coal Cutting Simulator (ARCCS) was modified to conduct regrinding experiment. In order to estimate the effects of coal properties and operating parameters on regrinding and dust generation, an orthogonal fractional factorial experimental design was implemented in regrinding experiment. Marple personal cascade impactors, Series 290, were used to measure dust concentration during experiment. Three types of coal seams, namely, Waynesburg, Pittsburgh, and Lower Kittanning, were used to represent different coal properties. Experimental results and complete parametric analysis were presented.In a rotary cutting system, all the broken coal and part of the remaining coal from previous cutting cycles must be transported through part or entire circumference of the cutting drum. This transportation of already recovered coal through the cutting zone of rotary head makes it a rotary grinder. Some of the coal particles will be subjected to secondary fragmentation or regrinding in the process. The potential effect on dust generation by regrinding is significant because the cutting head utilizes kinetic energy to comminute recov¬ered coal material. The moving bits and bit blocks on the cutting head impact coal particles and transfer some of their kinetic energy to the particles. After obtaining kinetic energy, coal particles are free to impact one another and they also impact the coal seam or cutting head. During impact, high impact force and high internal stress concentration are created in the particles. Kinetic energy is transformed into strain energy. When stored strain energy exceeds allowable strain energy, the particles will break. A great amount of respirable dust will be generated due to impact failure. In reality, regrinding occurs at the same time as primary cutting. The particles to be ground are the result of primary cutting. Both primary cutting and regrinding produce dust. Therefore, it is impossible to separate regrinding from primary cutting. In order to study respirable dust generation by regrinding and analyze the influencing parameters, a laboratory approach was adopted. In this approach, it is possible to study the regrinding separating from primary cutting."

A lignite from west-central North Dakota (Mercer County) was dried by the Bureau of Mines by the Fleissner process at saturated steam pressures to 1,500 pounds per square inch absolute (p.s.i.a.). Normally, the process is operated at pressures of 200 to 370 p.s.i.a. At the highest pressure the temperature of the saturated stearn is 596° F. The purpose of the investigation was to evaluate the influence of very high stearn pressure and temperature on moisture removal, steam consumption, and physical and chemical characteristics of the dried lignite. Two drying cycles were used: A normal cycle, corresponding to previously established standard time requirements, and an accelerated cycle, wherein time requirements were determined by boiler capacity and handling speed. Blank tests to determine stearn requirements for heating the empty autoclave were performed for each cycle and each test condition. Moisture removal, final moisture content, net steam consumption, and size stability of the dried lignite were determined.
