"INTRODUCTION During its wartime program of exploration for minerals essential to the national economy, the Bureau of Mines was instructed to investigate sources of raw materials used in the manufacture of iron and steel. As a part of this investigation, some work was done on the iron deposits on the Neutral and Aztec claims on Buckhorn Mountain Canogan County, Washington, which was designed chiefly to indicate the nature and behavior of the ore deposits below the surface exposures. Diamond drilling was started in June and completed in July 1945. Preliminary laboratory tests on iron, ore from Buckhorn Mountain were completed during the fall and winter of 1945. This report presents the data obtained from the investigation.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The feasibility of simultaneously burning several paths through a coalbed to develop a multiple path underground gasification system was investigated by the Bureau of Mines during two experiments, Boreholes were drilled through the overburden and into the coal and arranged in a circle approximately 50 feet from a central borehole. In the first experiment, in an area which had previously been hydraulically fractured,5 air was injected at the center borehole. The coal was ignited at the other boreholes and the fire fronts traveled toward the center, counter to the flow of air, to backward burn paths through the coalbed. Two paths were linked during the first 5 days of operation. The outlets of these two paths were throttled and air pressure was increased to maintain the flow of air, but no other linkages were made. Fourteen days after the two linkages these two paths were opened and gasification was carried on for 10 days, but with only moderate success. In an effort to overcome operating difficulties air was injected at the peripheral boreholes, and the gases were drawn off at the center borehole. Reversed flow operations continued for 12 days and two more paths linked. The heating value of the gas generally was higher than 100 British thermal units per standard cubic foot (B.t.u. per std. c.f.). Because only four of seven paths linked, however, the entire system could not be evaluated with respect to product-gas output and recovery of energy.

This paper is a preliminary report of the results of the Bureau of Mines' twenty-second semiannual survey of motor gasoline marketed in the United States. A more detailed discussion of the whole survey is in preparation and will be published as a companion, report. The second paper, in addition to giving a more complete summary of the data included in this report, will present results of the determination of copper-strip core lion (method 530.22), color (method 10.11), sulphur content (method 520.11) evaporation residue (method 530.1), and gum content as given by the Bureau of Mines steam oven method.9 The retail price at the time the sample was taken and tax will also be stated for each sample. The present paper deals specifically with data relating to gravity, vapor pressure, and distillation. It has been the feeling of some investigators that the practice, followed in previous semiannual surveys, of grouping all types of motor fuel together without discriminating between "competitive price gasoline," benzol blends, Ethyl gasoline, "high-test" fuels, etc., has detracted from their usefulness because the data did not permit drawing conclusions in regard to any one type of fuel, and tended to obscure differences between fuels of the various types. Therefore, in order to remedy this condition, the samples of the present survey have been divided into two groups; one called "competitive-price gasoline" and a second group called "premium-price motor fuels."

This report describes coal-mining methods, power requirements, coal production and distribution, and coal resources of the Bull Mountain coal field in Musselshell and Yellowstone Counties, south-central Montana Investigations in the field, were conducted by Bureau of Mines engineers The report contains a short summary of the geology and geography of the field and discusses the following information secured during the field study: Method of mining practiced at each mine, including a description of each phase of the mining cycle. Coal produced and its distribution at each mine. Power requirements and the consumption of electricity per ton of coal produced by mines. Number of non employed by mines, and the production per man per shift underground and the over-all production per man employed. Estimates of future production and power requirements for the field as a whole. This information should be of benefit to any company or individual planning the development of now coal mines in the area or the expansion of present operations.

This report describes reconnaissance by the Federal Bureau of Mines of titanium-bearing sandstone in Kemper County, Miss. The purpose was to determine the ilmenite, rutile, and associated heavy-mineral content of black-sand-bearing Eocene deltaic formations" The investigation was part of a survey of titanium resources of the United States. Ilmenite (FeTi03), an iron-titanium oxide, is the major titanium-bearing mineral consumed in the titanium pigment industry. Rutile (Ti02), titanium oxide, is used mainly in producing welding-rod coatings and titanium metal. The fieldwork was conducted during the first half of November 1959. Seven holes, totaling 304 feet of bore, from which 64 samples of cuttings were taken, were drilled in the north-central part of the county; and two holes, totaling 172 feet of bore, from which 34 samples of cuttings were taken, were drilled in the southeastern part.

The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the U. S. Geological Survey, developed the property of the Tungsten Metals Corp. by surface trenching and diamond drilling from November 1940 to June 1941 and from August 1943 to December 1943. The purpose of the work was to determine possible reserves of tungsten in the downward extension and lateral eastern extension of three major tungsten-bearing quartz veins. The property is 50 miles south of Ely, White Pine County, Nev., in the Minerva Mining District. Tungsten ore was discovered in the district in 1915, and mining started in 1916. The tungsten ore bodies occur as shoots in quartz veins that occur along faults in limestone. With the exception of a small-scale leasing operation in 1932, the property was idle from 1919 until 1936, when Tungsten Metals Corp. was organized to acquire the mines. Production ceased in May 1945, and the mines were idle until leased in 1947. Development by the Bureau of Mines during 1940 and 1941 consisted of surface trenching, sampling, and diamond drilling 37 holes for a total of 6,959 feet. Subsequent drilling of eight holes, totaling 3,067 feet, in 1943 disclosed additional reserves. This report sets forth in considerable detail the exploration work completed by the Bureau and briefly describes the mining and milling methods employed. Diamond-drill halo logs and sample analyses are shown graphically in the illustrations that accompany the report.

"The use of diesel equipment in underground coal mines is controversial because ""whole diesel exhaust"" is regarded as ""a potential occupational carcinogen"" by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Threshold limit values (TLVs) are recommended for the gaseous pollutants; CO, CO2, NO, NO2, SO2, and some hydrocarbons emitted in diesel exhaust. There is, however, no TLV recommended for diesel exhaust aerosols (DEA) nor is there a standard method for sampling these aerosols.The University of Minnesota and the Bureau of Mines have collaborated to develop a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler (PDEAS) which utilizes size selective, inertial impaction and gravimetric analysis. During the field tests of this sampler, numerous air quality measurements were conducted in underground coal mines using diesel equipment. The objective of this report is to present these data and to assess the impact of diesel face haulage equipment on mine air quality.Air quality data were collected in four underground coal mines using continuous mining methods with diesel haulage equipment. Daily samples were collected at the section intake, haulageway, and on haulage vehicles. Both full-and partial-shift samples were collected using a variety of aerosol instruments, including the PDEAS and the micro-orifice, uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI) which sample the mine aerosol diesel exhaust fraction. Two of the mines were also monitored for the major gaseous constituents found in diesel exhaust CO, CO2, NO, NO2, and SO2. These measurements were made by either collecting bag samples for subsequent gas analysis or by Palmes dosimeters.The concentrations of CO, CO2, NO, NO2, and SO2, were well below regulated levels. The mine average DEA concentration determined by the PDEAS in the haulageway for the three mines surveyed using this instrument was 0.79 mg/m3, with a standard deviation of 0.19 mg/m3. DEA contributed 65% of the respirable aerosol, at this location. These results were the same as the mean DEA concentrations calculated from size distribution measurements obtained using the MOUDI. This was 0.78 mg/m3, with a standard deviation of 0.22 mg/m3."

As part of its mine subsidence research program, the Bureau of Mines and the American Electric Power Co. cooperated on a study, conducted at the Price River Coal Co. No. 3 Mine, directed toward developing the capability to estimate the surface subsidence resulting from longwall mining in a geologic, topographic, and mining environment common to coalfields in the Western United States. Subsidence was monitored at the No. 3 Mine over two adjacent longwall panels. The subsidence study area was reduced when the two planned panels were reduced in length because of equipment failure and a mine fire. Subsidence was measured for 21 months. Subsidence continued for 6 months after mining had been completed. A maximum of 2.2 ft of subsidence occurred over the two longwall panels mined at an overburden depth ranging from 300 to 1,500 ft.

The Snowbank study area, which had been proposed as Wilderness, lies about 5 air mi southwest of Cascade, Idaho, and about 60 air mi north of Boise. The eastern boundary of the north-south-elongate study area lies 1-to 2-mi east of Cascade Reservoir; the western boundary is contiguous, in part, with the western boundary of Valley county. The 8,200-acre study area is underlain by Cretaceous granitoid rocks of the Idaho batholith. Three prospects were found in or near the study area during a library and field search. Gold occurs at one 30-ft adit, but the gold-bearing structure appeared too narrow to contain resources. Two other prospects appeared essentially unmineralized. No evidence of geothermal activity was observed. Rock in the area is not potentially useful as dimension stone because it does not split into flat slabs. To be used as aggregate, the rock would require crushing and hauling to distant markets. One of 18 alluvium concentrate (placer) samples contained free gold, worth $1.07 per cubic yard of gravel (at a $350 per oz gold price). No alluvial bars were seen; deposits were too small to contain gold resources or be considered gravel resources.

This report describes preparation characteristics of significant coalbeds in Tazewell County , Va . In 1961 Tazewell County produced 933,110 tons of clean coal from six coalbeds ; the Lower Banner , Raven , Jawbone , Upper Seaboard , and Pocahontas No. 3 and No. 5. Samples from all of these beds , except the Lower Banner , were included in this study plus a sample from the Pocahontas No. 4 bed . Of the samples collected , only one would require upgrading to be of metallurgical quality . The coals ranged in rank from high- volatile -A to low- volatile bituminous .

This is the sixth report of investigations in cooperation with the steel industry to establish the technological acceptability of electrolytic manganese in steelmaking processes. The bulk of the .electrolytic manganese used in these tests was produced by the Bureau Of Mines from domestic ores at its Boulder City, Nev., pilot plant by the process developed by the Bureau. Electrolytic manganese for the first series of tests made in 1940 was supplied by the Electro manganese Corp., Knoxville, Tenn. The first report dealt with the application of electrolytic manganese to the manufacture of stainless.steel;9 the second with tests in acid electric and acid open-hearth low and medium carbon-steel castings; the third with its use in rimmed and? killed low-carbon steels; the fourth with its application to the manufacture of stainless steel as well as the Timken 16-25-6 alloy for gas turbines; and the fifth with tests in acid and basic electric steel foundry practice and basic steel ingot production.

The stripping of coal with mechanical. equipment has progressed since the introduction of the first steam-powered shovel for the retóval of overburden at a mine in Pittsburg, Kans., in 1877...From the smart steam-powered shovels with dippers of less than a cubic yard capacity, small digging radius, and shovels that required manual moving, the trend has been toward large-capacity machines. Steam as power has been replaced largely by electricity, gasoline, and Diesel fuel, and dipper capacity as great as 35 cubic yards has been attained. Shovels and drag lines are self-propelled and revolve through 360°. The cost of these large-capacity modern machines is great, and in order to assure the return of the investment during the life of the property the reserve of coal in the area to be mined must be large;" Many comparatively small areas of coal suitable for strip mining exist, but these areas probably could not be mined, profitably with this large equip- ment. Therefore, heavy equipment has not been used in small areas because of the high cost in place of this equipment, the time and Atpense required to transport the machines to the mine site, and the construction of power lines if the machines are electrical powered.. Scrapers and light excavating equipment ane mobile, and the investment cost is not high. These units have been used in sirring the coal in small areas. A study to determine the methods in, yogue, and economic considerations involved in the use of such equipment was undertaken, and the information obtained is discussed in this report.

"INTRODUCTION During the summer of 1945, the Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation and program of churn drilling near the village of Tennyson in Grant County, Wis. The work was undertaken as part of a general investigation of the zinc-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin at a time when all effort was being made to increase the production of metals important to the war program.The area for special investigation was selected on the basis of favorable structural disclosures, evidence of widespread zinc mineralization, absence of any great amount of exploration to depth beneath the productive shallow workings, and the favorable results of several churn-drill holes in the village of Tennyson.During the Bureau's investigation, 30 churn-drill holes aggregating5,888 feet were completed.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to-the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Phenol was discovered in coal tar by Runge (1)1/ in 1834 and was isolated (2) in 1841 as pure phenol by distilling the tar, extracting with caustic soda, acidifying the extract, and fractionating the tar acids. Later, o-cresol was isolated (3) through careful fractional distillation of the tar-acid mixture. The m-and p-cresols distilled within a boiling range of about 1.50 c. and had to be separated by other means. Raschig (4) fractionated the tar-acid mixture to obtain pure o-cresol, sulfonated the mixture of m-and p-cresols, and treated the cresol-sulfonic acids with superheated steam at 1200 to 1300 c. to hydrolyze the m-cresol sulfonic acid, the p-isomer was not affected at that temperature. He also attempted to make use of the different crystallizabilities of the m-and p-cresol sulfonic acids (5). When treated with sodium bisulfate and sodium pyro-sulfate at 100° to 110° C. or with sulfuric acid (90/0) at 20° C., only the m-cresol was sulfonated (6). Hoffman-La Roche (7) treated the meta-para mixture with concentrated sulfuric acid at 40° to 100° C., when m-cresol and part of the p-cresol was sulfonated, and precipitated the m-cresol sulfonic add by diluting with water. The same sort of separation may be carried out by means of 80 percent sulfuric acid at 35° C. and 35 mm pressure (8).

The Bureau of Mines performed drill calibration tests on two industrial percussive drills of 2-5/8- and 3-1/2-inch piston diameters to determine operating characteristics for their use in conjunction with penetration rate data in developing drillability equations and furthering the knowledge of percussive drills. The use of a linear velocity transducer for measuring piston velocities and application of its instrumentation are described. Data presented include relationships between maximum piston velocity and feed air pressure other results confirm the theory or data of previous investigators, and some comparisons are made with the performance prediction formulas of other investigators.

Thermodynamic properties were determined by the Federal Bureau of Mines for lithium metasilicate (Li2Si03) and lithium disilicate (Li2Si205). Their enthalpies of formation were investigated by hydrofluoric acid solution calorimetry. The standard values are ?Hf°298 -393.8 ± 0.8 kcal/mole for Li2Si03, and ?Hf°298 -611.8 ± 1.0 kcal/mole for LiSi205. Enthalpy increments above 298 K were measured by copper-block drop calorimetry from 298 to 1,404 K for Li2Si03, and from 298 to 1,281 K for Li2Si205. Low-temperature heat capacities were determined adiabatically from 6 to 305 K for Li2Si205 only. The derived standard entropy is S°298 = 29.20 ± 0.10 cal/deg-mole. The various experimental data were combined with other data from the literature, and resulting properties of ?Hf°, ?Gf°, and log Kf were tabulated as a function of temperature.

Shales from 14 locations in Indiana were sampled , tested , and evaluated to determine feasibility of producing lightweight aggregates by rotary - kiln and sintering methods . Sampling procedures and the geology of the significant shale units are discussed . Preliminary testing was conducted in a muffle furnace , and continuous tests were made in a 16 - inch by 14 - foot rotary kiln . The aggregate weighed 37.0 to 47.2 pounds per cubic foot . Concrete cubes employing the aggregate were tested to determine the qualities of the concrete . Compressive strength of the concrete using seven bags of cement per cubic yard , after autoclave curing for 6 hours , ranged from 3,600 to 5,850 pounds per square inch . Four samples made suitable lightweight aggregate in the laboratory rotary kiln . Four samples tested by sintering methods made unsatisfactory aggregate .
