The gas chromatographic method, devised by the Bureau of Mines for analyzing routine mine air samples, was compared with the infrared method used for confirmatory determination of methane in mine air. While maintaining the specificity of the infrared method for methane determination, the gas chromatographic method is more precise, much more rapidly performed, and more convenient.

Illinois has the largest reported bituminous coal resources of any state and is one of largest coal-producing states in the nation. Coal-bearing rocks underlie about 65 percent of Illinois, including all or part of 86 of its 102 counties. An estimated 18 1 billion tons of coal resources are still in the ground. Using present mining methods, more than 30 billion tons of coal are classified as recoverable. This represents almost one-eighth of the total recoverable reserves of all types of coal in the United States. The state's surface mining regulatory program was conditionally approved June 1,1982. It received full approval October 25,1988. The Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved June 1, 1982, and the AML emergency authority June 11, 1984.

"ORIGIN OF INVESTIGATIONThe Federal Mine Safety Code for Bituminous Coal and Lignite Mines of the United States, July 24J 1946, contains the following provisions with regard to rock dusting: Article VI. - Section 2. Rock dusting.(a) All mines, except those mines or those locations in a mine which are too wet or too high in incombustible content to propagate an explosion, shall be rock-dusted to within 80 feet of the faces of rooms and entries; however, if the mine or any part of it is wet but becomes dry, the mine or portion of the mine so affected shall be rock-dusted as ·soon as it becomes dry. (b) In mines partially rock-dusted or in mines that are required to start rock dusting, haulageways and parallel entries connected thereto by open crosscuts shall be rock-dusted. Back entries shall be rock-dusted for at least 1,000 feet outby the junction with the first active entry. Inby this junction, the rooms, entries, and crosscuts shall be rock-dusted by generalized rock dusting as provided for in section 2(a).(c) Where rock dust is applied, it shall be distributed upon the top, floor, and sides of all open places and maintained in such quantity that the incombustible content of the mine dust will not be less than 65 percent. In trackless entries and air courses, protection in lieu of generalized rock dusting may be had by using bags filled with rock dust, if they are placed at regular intervals and staggered as described in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 3411."

[Stimulative methods of production, whereby the total recovery of oil from natural reservoirs is increased, have come into considerable prominence during the past 15 years. In many oil-producing areas properties considered ready for abandonment by ordinary producing methods have responded to some form of stimulation, and their economic lives have been extended. The stimulative method having widest application is the injection of air or gas into the reservoir formations through selected input wells and is commonly referred to as the ?gas drive." As a result of the many successful "gas-drive" operations operators are depending more and more upon this method for increasing the ulti¬mate recovery of oil from their properties. A number of factors influence the efficiency of different gases as propulsive agents in recovering oil from sands. Gases of high density and viscosity shrew a tendency toward a slightly higher efficiency than those of lower density and viscosity. The solubility of the gas in the oil also affects the efficiency of oil recovery. Not only does dissolved gas decrease the viscosity of the oil, but dissolved gas that expands from solution in the oil tends to increase the effectiveness of a "gas drive." Interfacial tension between the oil and the gas and its effect upon the recovery of oil by gas injection are factors of which little is known. Dr. A. G. Loomis5 expressed the opinion that interfacial tension probably plays a minor role in the recovery of oil, except under conditions that produce a gas-oil foam. In connection with the above physical properties that influence the action of a pressure medium, control of the injected volume of the pressure medium is perhaps the major factor. The rate ofg;as injection determines to a great extent the amount of slippage and the resulting efficiency of the operation. The importance of volume control is realized when one considers that frequently it is the only factor that is under complete control of the operator.]

Procedures in which manganese compounds are reduced and the metal is volatilized and selectively condensed, a hitherto neglected area, were investigated. More than 95 percent of the manganese was recovered from high-melting-point ores whether vacuum volatilization or atmospheric pressure volatilization was used, but neither process is economically attractive under present price-cost conditions.

External control of the electrochemical potential of a bed of mineral particles has been investigated by the Bureau of Mines as a method for controlling particle inter-action with organic collectors and thus, flotation response. A cylindrically shaped, 200-to 300-g bed of sulfide mineral particles was used as the working electrode to examine the potential distribution in the bed. The dissolved oxygen concentration of the electrolyte had a significant effect on the potential profile across the mineral bed. Low oxygen levels were necessary to achieve uniform electrochemical potential distributions. Flotation separation of a chalcocite-pyrite mineral mixture by controlled potential was achieved using ethylxanthate, but the flotation behavior of chalcocite and pyrite from the mixture does not follow the flotation behavior of the individual minerals. That is, the presence of another sulfide mineral alters the flotation behavior with ethylxan-thate. Galvanic interaction due to mineral-to-mineral contact between chalcocite and pyrite contributes to differences in the recovery. Chalcocite dissolution products had a deleterious effect on pyrite flotation by activating flotation below -0.1 V (saturated calomel electrode) and depressing flotation above -0.1 V. Pyrite dissolution products had no effect on chalcocite flotation.

This Bureau of Mines report describes a series of rapid wet chemical methods for the analysis of blast furnace slags. A "complete" analysis for total iron, manganese, silica, lime (calcium oxide), magnesia (magnesium oxide), sulfur, and mixed oxides (R203) can be routinely performed in less than 3 hours. These methods were employed as the analytical control procedures for the Bureau's experimental blast furnace operations and have been satisfactorily applied to the analysis of other slags and calcareous materials.

The Bureau of Mines undertook a theoretical and laboratory study to determine the feasibility of using ethylene as a tracer for natural gas in underground gas-storage reservoirs. The study indicated that ethylene was a useful gas tracer in underground gas storages. Tracer losses were not excessive. Laboratory tests were conducted at pressures as high as 500 psia in both wet and dry consolidated-sandstone cores, evaluating tracer loss with gas blends containing natural gas with different concentrations of ethylene tracer. Under certain conditions losses were less than 17 percent.

High-quality sheet of electrowon molybdenum was attained by a sequence of procedure on pressed and arc-melted crystalline powders. The procedures included high-temperature, high-vacuum sintering treatments and the use of metal deoxidizers instead of carbon to improve the mechanical properties of the molybdenum sheet. Rolled sheet 60 mils thick was evaluated by tensile and bend tests, hardness measurements, microstructures, and recrystallization treatments. After stress relieving, yield strength ranged from 85,000 to 110,500 psi (0.2- percent offset) and ultimate strength ranged from 87,200 to 117,250 psi with 4.5- to 25-percent elongation observed for arc-melted sheet, and 5.0- to 23- percent elongation observed for powder metallurgy sheet. In room temperature bend tests the sheet yielded plastically, indicating that the ductile-brittle transition point was below room temperature. The diamond pyramid hardness (DPH) of the molybdenum sheet changed from 214 to 293 DPH for the stress-relieved condition to 177 to 185 DPH for the fully recrystallized condition. The brittleness of recrystallized molybdenum, reported by other investigators as characteristic of sheet prepared from commercial-grade hydrogen-reduced powders, was not in evidence. Recrystallized tensile specimens pulled at room temperature had an average elongation of 31 percent.

"The significant facts in the problem of the relation between the production of crude petroleum, and the ever-increasing demand for petroleum products are that in spite of continually increasing production, improvements in methods of refining and utilization, and heavy increases in imports, demands grow still more rapidly and we seem always faced with a shortage at hand or lust ahead. On the other hand, our foremost authorities warn um of entirely inadequate domestic reserves. Looking abroad we find some large fields and many of speculative promise, 'tut the situation is complicated by international relations and demands by other countries which promise to be even more insistent than oars. This is the situation, then. We can not rely upon our own Crude Petroleum to meet the Ever Increasing Demand for Petroleum Products.I wish to follow this somewhat alarming statement by saying at once that the Bureau of Mines is not pessimistic in facing this situation. To my mind those who discuss the oil situation may be placed in three categories; the pessimists, the optimists, and the super-optimists. The pessimists I call those who see darkly and will concede no possibility of solution. According to them a few years will see the automobiles piled in windrows of 'dilapidated junk, I have no sympathy with this point of view and deem it vicious and entirely unwarranted.The optimists I term those who believe that there is a solution and that we shall be able to meet all of our reasonable requirements for as far into the future as can be foreseen, yet who recognizes that this desired end can not be attained without prevision and energetic effort.The super-optimists are those who will say to you, ""There is nothing to this talk of shortage, whenever we have needed oil we have always found it and always will."" To these gentlemen the possibility of an inadequate supply of oil is as incomprehensible as the possibility of the extinction of the passenger pigeon was to the early settlers who saw flocks that hid the sun for days during their passage. The passenger pigeon disappeared within two generations thereafter, and I deem this point of view as being perhaps more vicious than that of the extreme pessimist. It seems to me it is nothing less than improvidence lulling us into a false sense of security. There is an old proverb to the effect that ""The Lord helps him who helps himself."" I believe that we shall solve the oil problem, but I do not think it will be solved by vague optimism. It is going to call for our most energetic efforts and I believe we shall have to do a lot of ""helping ourselves."""

The Greenburg-Smith impinger was developed at the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the United States Public Health Service in 1922 in the course of an investigation of dust-sampling instruments available at that time. Although it is not used extensively outside of the United States, it is now soused in this country to collect samples for the determination of any dustiness, and most of the information correlating degree of dustiness with physiological effect has been obtained by the impinger method. The chief disadvantages in the use of the regular impinger, especially in mines and other places accessible with difficulty, are its bulk, weight, and power requirements. It requires a source either of electricity or of compressed air, which necessitates connections and extension of existing supply lines to each sampling point; the only alternative is the use of a relatively large pump hand-operated with considerable effort.

This paper describing the mining practices at the Argonaut mine, Amador County, California, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The mining practices described are those used in exploiting the low-grade gold ores in the heavy and swelling ground that occurs on the Mother Lode belt. The author acknowledges the assistance of E. Probabilities of encountering coalbed discontinuities during vertical or horizontal drilling in a specific coalbed can be estimated based on analysis of mined-out areas of the coalbed where the size, shape, orientation, and distribution of discontinuities are known. The result- ant probability estimates can be applied to cost-risk evaluations of drilling programs proposed for exploratory, developmental, or methane drainage purposes in undeveloped areas of that coalbed. Data compiled from mine maps of the Beckley Coalbed in southern West Virginia were used to estimate the probabilities that discontinuities would be encountered in two illustrative hypothetical drilling programs--one for drilling vertical boreholes and the other for drilling horizontal boreholes. Analysis based on a mined-out area of the Beckley Coalbed indicated that vertical methane drainage boreholes spaced 1,000 feet apart in a square grid pattern would each have a 29 percent probability of encountering a discontinuity in a geologically unexplored area of the coalbed. It was also determined that exploratory vertical drilling could locate most of the discontinuities if a borehole spacing of 2,500 feet were used. For horizontal drainage boreholes in the Beck- ley Coalbed, the analysis indicated a linear relationship between hole length and the probability of encountering a discontinuity.

The Great Eastern nickel deposit is located in the western foothills of the Virgin Mountains in the Copper King or Bunkerville district situated in the southeastern part of Clark County, Nev. It is covered by a group of eight claims that can be reached by turning south from U. S. Highway 91 at Riverside, Nev., and driving about 12.6 miles southeast over a winding mountain road, which rises from about 3,000 feet to 4,000 feet in elevation. The climate is dry, with only a small amount of rainfall throughout the year. The temperature ranges from hot during the summer to short periods of freezing weather during the winter months. The vegetation is of the desert variety, and no timber is available for mining. Water for mining purposes would have to be pumped from lower areas. A granitoid gneiss comprises the largest part of the rock outcrops. It has a steeply dipping foliation that strikes about N. 75° E. The gneiss was intruded by basic dikes, which in turn were intruded by pegmatite dikes. The ore occurs as lenticular bodies formed by the convergence of several pegmatite dikes within the main dike. The principal sulfide minerals are pyrite, pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite, which contain a small amount of nickel. Late in the year of 1939, the Bureau of Mines undertook an exploration project on the Great Eastern property to extend or delimit the known mineralization. Underground work, consisting of 590 feet of drifting and crosscutting, was completed in September 1940, and 1,091 feet of diamond, drilling for downward extension of an ore body in the Lower edit, which was completed in February 1941.

"An in vitro study of the biologic responses of surface-modified and native silica and kaolin was made to provide comparative information on the supression of cytotoxicity by pulmonary surfactant. The release of alveolar macrophage cytoplasmic enzyme, lactate dehydrogenase (IDH), and lysosomal enzymes B-N-acetylglocosaminidase (B-NAG) and B-ghucuronidase (B-GLUC) and sheep blood-cell hemolysis were moni¬tored as indicators of cell membrane damage and cytutoxicity. Surface modification of silica and kaolin with dipalmitoyl lecithin (UPI) resulted in complete abrogation of cytotoxicity of both minerals. These findings indicate that surface modification of minerals with different adsorption properties by pulmonary surfactant generally lessens their prompt adverse effects.INTRODUCTIONAcute and chronic silicosis are well-characterized clinical and pathologic entities resulting from the inhalation of crystalline silica (Morgan and Seaton, 1984). Kaolin, a layered aluminosilicate clay frequently mined and used in manufacturing, contains tetrahedral silica alternately layered with alumina octahedra. Kaolin is relatively .inert biologically, and distinctly greater pulmonary burdens are seen in patients with kaolinosis than are seen in patients with silicosis. Crystalline siliea (quartz) induces a significantly greater degree of fibrosis in exposed animals in vivo than does kaolin (Hamilton and Hardy, 1974; Parkes, 1982; Hunter, 1976; Sheers, 1964; Warraki and t-lerant, 1963; Lynch and Mciver, 1954; Lapenas et al., 1984).This difference in pulmonary disease associated with the two types of dust is not reflected by in vitro cytotoxicity as Jetermined by pulmonary macrophage bioassays or erythrocyte hemolysis. Cytotoxicity studies using crystalline silica and kaolin of similar size fractions show comparable bioassay response on a mass basis. These cellular bioassays, therefore, do not correlate with the relative in vivo pathogenicity of silicates."

"INTRODUCTION A preliminary examination of the Green Monster and Benich copper prospects was made by engineers E. W. Newnan and George N. Bennett, of the Bureau of Mines, on December 13, 1943. In an unpublished report, it was stated that certain geologic features appeared to be similar to those associated with the copper deposits of the nearby Butte district. On these premises, a preliminary diamond-drilling program was recommended to explore 300 to 400 feet below the mineralized outcrops for the possible presence of a sulfide enrichment zone. In accordance with that recommendation, three holes were drilled. This report presents the data provided by that preliminary drilling exploration.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell D. While apparently the hysteria with regard to silicosis and other occupational diseases has largely subsided and this subject is being more carefully considered and soberly judged, it would be poor policy for any employer to maintain that the storm has ended and that he can relax and revert to conditions as they were 5, 10, or more years ago. The fact is that the plan of paying occupational-disease compensation is now in its infancy and can be expected to grow rapidly. At present, while all of the States of the Union, including the District of Columbia and excepting only Arkansas and Mississippi, have compensation acts, only the following make provision for occupational diseases to some extent or in one way or another: California, Delaware, Connecticut, District of Columbia? Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. Silicosis is compensable in one way or another in California, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Wisconsin, and possibly in other States. During the past few months, occupational-disease legislation (largely silicosis) has been considered in some form in Arkansas, California, Delaware, Idaho, Maryland, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah and Washington. It will be surprising if comparatively comprehensive occupational-disease legislation is not on the statute books of nearly every State in the Union within the next 5 years. With this situation confronting him, the farsighted industrialist who has the interest of his organization at heart, if he has not already done so will immediately start to "put his house in order" by studying possible occupational disease hazards to his employees and promptly applying known remedial measures or attempting to devise such measures if none exist. Unquestionably, one of the most important of the surveys to be made relates to dust occurrence, as State laws on occupational disease are almost certain to contain provisions, on silicosis and, with almost equal certainty, the provisions of any State law are not likely to be particularly similar to those of other States.

This paper describing the methods employed in the purchasing and supply departments of the Miami Copper Co., Miami, Ariz., is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on office practice in mining operations. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Miami Copper Co.'s plant is located about 1 mile from the town of Miami, in the Globe-Miami Mining District, Gila County, Ariz. The property consists of a complete mining plant, concentrator, high-pressure steam power plant, and many other attendant structures. In normal times the company employs about 1,500 men, and mines and mills about 6,000,000 tons of ore annually.
