 This paper describes the method used and results obtained in testing a hand-fired down-draft furnace at a plant in Washington, D. C., in order to determine the method of firing that would give the best results with a minimu of smoke. The smoke regulations of the District of Columbia are very rigid, and are well enforced, A paragraph of the ordinance relating to furnaces other than household, reads, "The emission of dense or thick black or gray smoke or cinders from any smokestack or chimney 113ed in connection with any stationary engine, steam boiler, or furnace of any description within the District of Columbia shall be deemed, and is hereby declared, to be a public nuisance". This ordinance, if literally enforced, would eliminate all ordinary hand-fired grates and furnace combinations where coal other then anthracite is used. However, in several Gov- ernment plants where hand-firing of coal is still necessary conditions have been satisfactorily met by installing the down-draft type of furnace. In these plants, as at all hand-fired plants, considerable difference in operating details and methods is found. The firemen are paid day laborer's wages and are often inexperienced. The instructions of the furnace makers fre- quently do not appeal to the firemen, and are not closely followed, This is partly due to the necessity of running the boilers continuously at much higher ratings than were intended by the manufacturer. Tests were made on a Hawley furnace of this type to improve the methods of firing, particularly at the higher ratings.

Maintaining ground stability in the gate roads, particularly the tailgate, has always been critical to the success of longwall mining, both in terms of safety and productivity. Several new support technologies have been developed in recent years to replace conventional wood and concrete cribbing for secondary roof support. Since their performance characteristics are unique, the best practices that have been developed with conventional wood cribbing may not be applicable for these alternative support technologies. Therefore, with so many options to consider and the importance of achieving adequate ground control at minimal cost, the trial and error approach to longwall gate road support is no longer prudent. This paper discusses a design methodology for standing secondary tailgate supports. This design technique requires in-mine measurements of tailgate support loading and convergence to establish a tailgate ground, reaction behavior based on the support and strata interaction. The methodology uses the performance characteristics generated in the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH) Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) to match the stiffness and load characteristics of various supports to the measured ground reaction behavior. It can be used to determine the appropriate -- application of alternative roof support systems or to design in- mine trials such that a fair and equitable comparison of different support systems can be made. A case study if the methodology at a western Pennsylvania mine site is presented in the paper, including a comparison of four alternative support technologies to conventional wood and concrete cribbing historically used at this particular mine.

"In a cooperative study by the University of Minnesota and the U.S. Bureau of Mines, diesel exhaust and mineral dust concentrations have been measured for aerosols generated in the laboratory and in five underground coal mines. Three mines utilized diesel-powered haulage equipment and two used all-electric equipment. Two source apportionment techniques have been applied to differentiate between the mineral dust and diesel exhaust aerosol concentrations measured. The first technique, using a micro-orifice, uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI) for size selective sampling, is based on modeling aerosol size and the premise that the diesel exhaust portion of the aerosol is predominantly submicron and the mineral dust portion is mostly greater that one micrometer in size. The second technique, Chemical Mass Balance (CMB) modeling, was used to referee the analysis of diesel exhaust and mineral dust aerosol concentrations from the size selective sampling results.The MOUDI size distribution data were modeled to obtain parameters describing the fine and course fractions of the sampled aerosol and to estimate the contributions to each mode from both mineral dust and diesel exhaust aerosol sources. The results showed the size distribution of the mixed aerosols exhibited two definite modes with the minimum between the modes occurring at 0.8 µm. Less than 5 pct of the coal mine diesel aerosol was found in the coarse size fraction. CMB analysis confirms the original premise for using aerosol size to separate diesel exhaust and mineral dust aerosol during sampling.Based on the results from the size selective sampling, a personal diesel aerosol sampler has been developed for measuring diesel aerosol mass concentrations. Th.is sampler uses an inertial impactor to size separate the respirable aerosol at 0.8 µm. All material less than 0.8 µm is collected on an after filter for subsequent gravimetric analysis."

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted research to improve the ventilation of large-opening mines whose entries are at least 93m2 (1,000 ft2). The ventilation of large-opening mines is unique compared to other types of mines because (1) it is challenging to keep airflow velocities high enough to effectively remove or dilute airborne contaminants because the entries are so large, (2) large air volumes can be moved through the mines with little static pressure drop, and (3) stoppings that are used to direct ventilation airflows are costly to construct and to maintain. The research results suggest that the ventilation of large-opening mines is improved significantly by incorporating ventilation planning into the mine planning process, using propeller fans to direct airflow, developing new stopping materials and construction methods, and using long pillars to eliminate crosscuts where possible.

This paper reports the results of solution calorimetry conducted to obtain the heats of formation of crystalline FeS04?6.952H20 and FeS04?1.008H20, from. which values were derived for the stoichiometric compounds FeS04?H20 and FeS04?H20. Also included are derived values of the free energies of formation and dehydration. This work was undertaken primarily to fill a need for data for pure, easily obtainable ferrous compounds that are suitable for use as calorimetric intermediates, The ferrous sulfate hydrates meet the essential requirements for this use.

A major contributor to the problem of short life expectancy for blade-type conveyor belt cleaners is uneven wear along the blade edge. Uneven wear results in the formation of channels in the blade edge, which allow material to be carried back between the blade and the belt. In an effort to reduce the uneven wear problem, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has studied the mechanisms responsible for effective belt cleaning. From this study emerged a design for a cleaner blade that would greatly reduce uneven edge wear. The design consists of a standard cleaner blade incorporating air passages that allow for the expulsion of air along that part of the blade edge in contact with the conveyor belt surface. The results of 18-h tests indicated that the expulsion of air on the blade edge prevents scratches from developing into deep grooves. These tests showed that effective blade cleaning life can be extended 25 times using the pneumatic cleaning blade, compared with solid metal cleaning blades.

The average quantity of heat needed to refine a barrel of crude oil in 1934 was 638,000 B.t.u., or about as much heat energy as contained in 5 gallons of fuel oil. Although the total heat utilized in 1934 was slightly above 1933, crude runs to stills increased 4 percent, hence the average requirement per barrel declined from 660,000 B.t.u. in 1933 to 638,000 B.t.u. in 1934 (see fig. 1). The average for 1934 constitutes a new record for firing efficiency, being just under the previous low of 1929. Heat consumption at refineries depends on many factors, of which the trends in yields of gasoline and lubricating oils are probably most important. The yield of gasoline is indicative of activity at cracking plants, which type of plant utilizes more than the average amount of heat per gallon of product. The yield of lubricating oils is indicative of the extent to which credo oil is refined; that is, it takes considerably more heat to refine a barrel of crude through lubricating oils than it does to separate only gasoline and kerosene. The yield of gasoline decreased from 43.7 percent in 1933 to 43.4 percent in 1934; on the other hand, the yield of gas oil and fuel oil increased. Although the yield of lubricating oils increased slightly in 1934 the theoretical increase in fuel requirements probably was offset by technical improvements, such as solvent refining.

The health and financial costs of cumulative injuries are plaguing the mining industry. Industry leaders are concentrating on reducing the risk of injury to their workers through design and redesign of work environments. While ergonomics is not a currently regulated field, many mines are realizing that the only way to tackle their most costly injuries, cumulative injuries, is to make the proactive choice to understand those injuries, their root causes and to make workplace changes to prevent them from occurring. Reduction of these injuries not only improves the health and morale of the workers but increases productivity and profit for the companies. Knowledge and reporting of ergonomic risk factors by employees and ergonomics committees is key to these changes and to the reduction of cumulative injuries. NIOSH is developing strong relationships with industry associations and equipment manufacturers to leverage their communication abilities to transfer knowledge to their customers and make a difference in the health and safety of U.S. miners. The benefits of a formalized approach to reducing these injuries along with examples will be presented.

"INTRODUCTIONMany of the facilities and much of the equipment available to the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust are highly specialized and therefore, unique to the universities associated with the Center as illustrated in FIGURES 30 through 39.For example, a sample bank of 1300 U.S. coal specimens housed in the Coal Research Section, Deike Building of The Pennsylvania State University has been characterized for physical, elemental, mineralogical and maceral compositions. The results of this research have been used to initiate a study of the relationship between pneumoconioses and coal properties. Selected samples from this bank have been used in animal (primate) studies at the Milton S. Hershey (Penn State) and West Virginia University Medical Centers. These laboratory facilities for research in the medical and biological disciplines is state-of-the-art and includes a primate colony where dust research is currently underway. The Materials Research Laboratory and the Rock Mechanics Laboratory at PSU, and the Mechanical Systems Design and Control Laboratory, the Rock Mechanics Laboratory and the Mine Electronic System Laboratory at WVU are equipped for fundamental research on dust generation and characterization. While the majority of respirable dust research projects fall into these two categories, dust generation and characterization and interaction of dust and lung, there are other laboratory facilities available to the Center which are unparalleled in the type of equipment and expert personnel that they contribute to the program. The Mine Particle Laboratory located at the University of Minnesota and the Diesel Engine Laboratory at Michigan Technological University are examples. They house equipment and instrumentation that is unique to these facilities. much of it having been developed specifically for dust research by the research scientists there. The dust collection equipment and the fine particles measurement, characterization and analysis apparatus are essential to research in the areas of dust collection, particle characterization and diesel particulates. In addition to university laboratories, the research facilities of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are available to the Center through its relationship With West Virginia University."

An important goal in the development of coal mining explosives has been to improve their safety characteristics through suitable formulation. In the United States no systematic effort to establish factors influencing the incendivity to firedamp and to coal dust of explosives through research was made until the last decade. In consequence, American permissible explosives underwent only very slight modifications and many remained substantially the same as in the early years. As part of a long range program for increasing the safety of permissible explosives, the Bureau of Mines undertook to determine how the amounts and particle sizes of the principal constituents of these explosives affect their incendivity. It was found that an increase in the relative amount of sodium chloride and a decrease in its particle size significantly decreased the incendivity of our permissible explosives to firedamp (7-9).6 This is in agreement with findings reported by Dolan (4) for compositions of nitroglycerin and salt. One important result of the work at the Bruceton station has been the recent introduction of salt-formulated permissibles by several explosives manufacturers. This paper describes a statistically designed experiment for studying the effects of the particle size of ammonium nitrate and the type of carbonaceous materials used on the incendivity of permissible explosives. Interest in these particular effects goes back as far as the first formulations of coal mine explosives, around 1910 in the United States and even earlier in Great Britain and other countries. The Bureau of Mines, as part of an agreement with the Bear Coal Co., Somerset, Col o., evaluated the response of a coal mine roof to time lapse. Time lapse, the interval between exposure and support of the roof, was studied using both instrumentation and statistics. Instrumentation studies were designed to equate displacement and rates of displacement with areas of roof left unsupported from 15 minutes to more than 4 days. A statistical study was completed to compare roof fall occurrence with time lapse intervals encountered during normal room-and-pillar mining. Results from this investigation show time lapse, in the Bear mine, to he insignificant with respect to roof stability after installation of permanent support.

A polyester-type resin and deformed-steel reinforcing bars (rebars) were used in to strengthen and to stabilize bolted, fractured wall rock along pas 1:'y. in a western gold mine. Reinforcing bars were placed in boreholes drilled into fractured rock and then were surrounded by resin pumped under pressure into the holes and intersecting fractures until the wall rock was thoroughly impregnated. Pumping and injection equipment and infusion procedures are described. Visual examinations for movement in bonded and adjacent unbonded rock were made for 3 years. Fractured walls containing resin-rebar installations were strengthened. The results suggest that resin-rebar support can be used advantageously and economically in repairing fractured or broken rock when compared with rock bolting or timbering.

"Engineering design involves, in addition to numerical calculations, considerable amount of expertise and judgement. The expertise and judgement is required to conceptualize and idealize the problem, select a suitable mathematical model for the problem and to interpret the model results in terms of stipulated design constraints. In recent years, knowledge based systems (KBS) have provided the capability to integrate the qualitative experiential and expert knowledge with ~he quantitative knowledge for improved analysis and design of systems. A possible KBS architecture for mine ventilation system design was discussed by Ramani and Prasad · (1987). The expert system (ES) component of the KBS supports the analysis and interpretation phases of the ventilation design process with an algorithmic program used for the solution of alternate designs. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the data and knowledge needs for developing such a system and a formal means of their representation on the computer. A number of ES shells were evaluated to explore possible development and delivery environments for the system. A brief summary of this evaluation is also provided.INTRODUCTIONLuxbacher and Ramani (1979) have discussed the design process of mine ventilation systems and have provided the interrelationships that exist between ventilation, strata control, drainage and material handling systems and mining methods. They have also outlined the importance of correct analysis of the problem, choice of the right solution method and a rigorous interpretation of the solutions. The expertise required for analysis and interpretation phases was identified as the key element in developing effective and efficient ventilation system designs. Such expertise is embedded in the right choice of questions to be asked of the user as well as in directing the user to a wide array of alternative methods that may satisfy the design requirements. With advances in artificial intelligence applications in recent years, particularly expert systems, the integration of expertise into traditional mine planning and design algorithms has been facilitated. These planning and design aids, employing the integration of numeric and symbolic logic and called coupled systems, are powerful tools for engineers to tap the benefits of experts (Kitzmiller and Kowalik, 1985; Fenves, 1985). The purpose of this paper is to discuss the means of representing knowledge for the design of mine ventilation systems through the use of a coupled system. The Bureau of Mines designed a cell having four variable compartments in series to facilitate analysis of multicomponent mixtures. Use of the cell considerably decreases the time required for differential absorption analyses. A solution of a major component is placed in each compartment, and the light absorbed by each of these components is varied by increasing or decreasing the path length of the appropriate cell. Simple calculations then establish the amount of the component present. In analyzing unknown mixtures, compensation is made for compounds known to be present, and the differential spectrum representing components not accounted for is recorded and analyzed.

An aluminizing dross which is accumulating as a waste material in substantial quantities was tested for possible use as a steel deoxidizer. This material, consisting mainly of aluminum, silicon, and iron, was used to deoxidize laboratory-scale melts ranging from 7 to 100 pounds. Oxygen analysis showed that the aluminizing dross was effective in reducing oxygen levels in steel. A direct comparison with aluminum wire showed the dross material to be at least as effective. Under similar test conditions with 7-pound melts, 3 grams of aluminum reduced the oxygen concentration from 210 to 175 ppm, while 4 grams of aluminizing dross (equivalent to approximately 2 grams aluminum) reduced the oxygen concentration from 250 to 170 ppm. An additional 4 grams of aluminizing dross produced a final oxygen concentration of 140 ppm.

This Bureau of Mines report has been prepared to provide a means whereby mineworkers without specific geologic training can recognize and record the existence of potentially hazardous geologic features encountered in coal mines. Each geologic feature described in this report has been implicated in roof failure. Through the recording of the observations of mineworkers, based on this report, a geologic map of mine workings and the associated ground control problems can be compiled. From such maps, the trends of changes and features can be determined and projected ahead of mining. The face crew can be alerted to a potential problem and what to look for as the face is advanced.

"The prevailing practice of washing unsized coal, 1/2-inch and finer, to 1/8-inch and finer, on a table is subject to certain limitations which are commonly overlooked. In some instances good results are obtained by this method, but often the opposite is true and the efficiency of the washing operation is low. Although the separation taking place on a concentrating table is not fully understood, the actual distribution of particles of various sizes and specific gravities was determined a number of years ago by ore-dressing investigators. Hence this paper consists of an analysis of an old problem by new methods. The experimental data on which the discussion is based were obtained in the course of coal-washing investigations conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines at the Northwest Experiment Station in cooperation with the University of Washington and with certain coal operator: of that State.Experimental WorkThe general method of study has been to take a large number of zonal products from the table, and separate them according to specific gravity and size into their component parts. The table used is one of the standard commercial sizes with a diagonal deck. The coal to be washed is split into representative portions, which are stored in separate bins. One portion is used for ""timing as"" the table; the products are collected continuously in the same turned to the feed bin, and thus a closed circuit is completed. When the despite conditions on the table are obtained, coal is fed from one of the re. After the table is operating smoothly the entire product is minute; such a sample is sufficiently large to represent accurately the work of the table and at the same time to minimize the effect of beginning at the end next to the head motion, separate samples are made for each foot along the edge of the deck."

This volume summarizes the contract work performed over a nine-month period by Westinghouse Electric Corporation on a Cost Plus Fixed Fee Contract for the Department of Interior's Bureau of Mines. The contract has been extended primarily to carry out improvements recommended for equipment produced under the contract for communicating with and locating trapped miners. These improvements will enhance the performance and utility of this equipment for operational use in actual mine emergencies. An additional complete set of the equipment will also he furnished to the Bureau under this extension. The work of the basic contract was to design, produce and test hardware in accordance with the Westinghouse response to a Bureau of Mines Request for Proposal which was based technically on recommendations of a study performed for the Bureau by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). The NAE study made suggestions for new equipment in three areas of need:
