"SUMMARYA chronological list of accidents at metal and nonmetal mines and quarries (excluding coal mines) in the United States in which five or more lives were lost has been compiled. Many accidents were described in more detail because of their unusual features. Tables have been included to indicate the number of major disasters and fatalities by the principal product mined, by State, and by 10-year intervals prior to 1945. The number of men employed to indicate man-hours exposed is unavailable; therefore, a true picture of disaster data by principal product mined, by State, and by 10-year intervals is not possible. However, the data are presented to indicate the causes of major accidents and bring to the attention of those affiliated with metal and nonmetal mines and quarries the hazards involved and lessons that can be practiced to keep such accidents at a minimum.INTRODUCTIONThe Bureau of Mines was requested to compile a chronological list of accidents at metal and nonmetal mines and quarries (excluding coal mines) in the United States in which five or more lives were lost. Data have been assembled on accidents from all causes in these mines and quarries from the earliest available information (describ¬ing an underground mine fire in Nevada in 1869) to the last reported major accident (a fire at a company-owned bunkhouse in Arizona in 1945).The accounts of the accidents were taken from articles in the technical press and from published and unpublished reports of the Bureau of Mines. Many of the accidents have been selected for more detailed descriptions because of the unique circumstances and to show the variety of dangers involved.Tables are included to indicate the number of major accidents, with resultant fatalities, by the principal metal and nonmetal producing groups, by State, and by 10-year intervals previous to 1945. The Bureau of Mines used a windowed cell to measure the phase-boundary pressures of two related series of gas-condensate fluid mixtures. Normal butane was added to the mixtures incrementally to determine its effectiveness for lowering phase-boundary pressure. All the experimental data were correlated, so that the pressure required to maintain light oils mixed with natural gas in the single phase may be computed for secondary recovery applications. The heavy hydrocarbon parts of the mixtures were distillation fractions of a Gulf Coast condensate. Intermediate normal hydrocarbons in the butane-heptane range and natural gas were added to the fractions in selected proportions, so that phase-diagram pressures of 26 fluids were actually studied. The experimental range of temperatures was 50° to 280° F. Two correlations were developed to represent phase-boundary pressures by means of a polynomial. Independent variables represent natural gas content, disparity of properties of components comprising the mixtures, and temperature. A fourth variable, for one correlation only, was the quantity of normal butane added to the original mixtures. The latter correlation with four independent variables contains 15 coefficients and is estimated to be accurate to 135 psi.

This paper reviewing the leaching practice of the New Cornelia mines of the Calumet & Arizona Mining Co. at Ajo, Ariz., is the first of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on leaching methods and costs in the various mining districts. Dump site injuries occur in all major mineral industries. Working in elevated areas near an edge is a common hazard for operators of off-highway mobile mining equipment. In this Information Circular (IC), serious injuries involving haulage trucks working at dump sites are examined for the period 1988 to 1997. Data were acquired from injury reports gathered by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). The IC is organized into three sections. The first presents an overview of the frequency and severity of injuries. The second analyzes injury characteristics using MSHA-defined data fields and author-defined injury classifications. Key findings are discussed in the third section. In summary, 370 serious injuries were identified that involved trucks at dump sites, of which 26 were fatalities. Although haulage truck activities at dump sites resulted in a small proportion of the total number of injuries at surface mines, these injuries were much more likely to result in death or significant amounts of lost time than most other surface mine injuries. These findings support the belief that haulage truck activities at dump sites are worthy of continued study by those interested in improving the health and safety of workers at surface mines.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines identified respirable dust sources and controls on four continuous auger mining sections, two with relatively low dust levels and two with high levels. Factors adversely affecting dust levels included auger equipment design, continuous haulage, and low seam height. Dust controls included ventilation practices and spray systems. Maximizing airflow seemed to reduce dust levels most. Air leakage and shock loss can be reduced by constructing stoppings with brushed-on mortar containing fiberglass and by keeping areas between curtains and ribs free from obstructions and storing equipment not essential for face activities in outby crosscuts. Curtain configuration, setback distance, and installation can also affect dust levels. Use of both blowing and exhausting curtains is the most effective configuration. Setbacks from the face should not exceed 15 ft. Installing brattice curtains at least 5.5 ft from ribs, when entries are 26 ft wide, minimizes velocity head. Installing curtains tightly against the mine roof and floor helps maintain a forward airflow movement in the center of the mine heading; curtain overlap can create a tighter seal. The wet-auger spray system also effectively controls dust, provided the mine is already exercising good ventilation practices.

During 1990-1999, a total of 458 fires occurred in all coal mining categories; 157 of those fires caused 164 injuries and 2 fatalities. The greatest number of fues and fire injuries occurred at surface mines, whch also had the highest risk rate values. A total of 66 fuefighting interventions were required. Of these, there were 25 mine rescue team interventions in underground mines, including 5 mobile equipment firefighting interventions, and 41 fire brigade and fire department interventions at all surface operations, including 19 mobile equipment interventions. In all, 50 fires destroyed or heavily damaged equipment (including 16 pieces of mobile equipment) because of failure of other firefighting methods, late fire detection, undetected fires, or fire size. A total of 1 14 fires were detected late by smoke, and 42 fires were not detected.

Increasing use of Birmingham and other roof trusses prompted a Bureau of Mines study of support forces produced on a mine roof by these members. Equations, obtained from laboratory and field tests, are given for calculating the contact forces between the roof strata and a typical truss. Actual contact forces for a specific truss are difficult to estimate because of variable friction loss at the contact points. A finite-element analysis, using typical contact forces, indicated that trusses have a negligible effect on the stress field in massive, competent roof strata. The effectiveness of trusses in supporting broken rock strata was not analyzed. However, experience has shown that trusses are effective in supporting incompetent roof.

Because of the absence of an iron-producing industry, the Pacific Northwest is working under an economic handicap. This is particularly apparent in the gray-iron-foundry industry because of the high price of pig iron imported from foreign sources or shipped in from producing ?areas within the United States. The high prices and sometimes short supply of ferrous metal products has put a brake on industrialization, which has been only partly compensated by the availability of cheap electric power. The economic condition of the gray-iron-foundry industry could be improved by establishing a small iron-producing industry based on the locally available ores. Moreover, establishing a local iron smelter would create a market for resources now dormant. Low-grade ores of manganese, chromium, and nickel would become usable in industry when combined with the iron ore from Scappoose. Pig iron produced in even limited quantities would level out the fluctuation in supply. The ore deposits, being small, would not supply enough pig iron to satisfy the entire demand. This condition necessitates designing special pig irons that will carry abnormally high proportions of scrap in the cupola charge.

This report summerizes the various studies made to determine the size and support of roofs in the upper shale formation, White Pine Copper Mine, Michigan. These studies were a cooperative effort of the White Pine Copper Company and the Federal Bureau of Mines. Before this investigation, the upper shale formation had been found to contain about 30 to 40 percent of the total mineralization in the ore zones. Investigators estimated that this shale could be economically mined by room-and-pillar methods, provided that the roof would stand over spans of 25 to 32 feet. The problem remained to determine the number of bolts required to safely support these spans. Unbonded fractures in the roof structure of the deposit complicated the use of laboratory methods for determining bolted roof support. Therefore, a method was devised to determine the in-place support which would consider the unbonded fractures. In this method the roofs of 3 rooms with spans of 20, 28, and 36 feet were intentionally overbolted as the rooms were mined. Following stability tests that sometimes exceeded 6 months, the bolts were selectively removed and roof sag, roof strain, and changes in bolt loads were measured concurrently. The number of bolts required for support of these spans was computed from these data.

Few studies have specifically measured and documented the large-scale loading behavior and durability of ventilation stoppings to mining induced movements, particularly from longwalls. Ventilation stoppings are more commonly the concern of ventilation engineers, and ventilation stopping response to ground movement has only been documented in an incidental manner. This paper presents the investigations of underground measurements that have been conducted to determine the loading response of stoppings constructed from lightweight aggregate concrete masonry units (CMU). These investigations have produced some interesting results that may prove beneficial, not only for developing and assessing alternative stopping construction techniques, but also for designing and selecting standard construction methods for use in varying mining conditions. For instance, the interface friction that results from wedging a CMU stopping during construction plays a substantial role in its ability to resist both lateral and vertical loads. Although they are not intended for ground support, the study showed that block stoppings can resist vertical loads of at least 2,700 to 3,000 kN. Asymmetric loading of a stopping may result in localized failure of blocks within a stopping, which, depending on the severity, can be a precursor of impending stopping failure. In addition to measurement results and implications, the paper will also present details of field measurement methods used to assess stopping response. Stopping stiffness and material strength characteristics will also be presented.

Because backfill has occasionally collapsed into an active working area, posing a hazard to miners, engineers from the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and Hecla Mining Co. installed instruments in a cemented, backfilled, stope-ramp intersection at Hecla’s Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, ID. The purpose was to measure stress and strain changes in the backfill and reinforcing members during undercut mining. The instruments were monitored for 6 months while three successive cuts were mined below the intersection. Readings showed induced loads up to 3450 kPa (500 psi) in the backfill as stope walls converged 2.5 to 12 cm (1 to 5 in). The backfill then deformed against the top and bottom plates of the 2-m- (6-ft-) long vertical rock bolts installed as reinforcement, producing loads to 177 kN (40,000 lb)on the rock bolts. We hypothesize that a compressive zone was created in the backfill that allowed the backfill to remain stable as long as the compressive zones from adjacent rock bolts overlapped. This hypothesis is presented in graphical form. Of particular interest was the effect of loading on trusses installed to augment the vertical rock bolts and wire mesh typically installed in backfill. Data from the instruments indicate that wall closure perpendicular to the vein induced loads in truss legs parallel to the vein and in the rock bolt driven through the center of the truss, but, because they are designed to function under tension, truss legs perpendicular to the vein supplied in significant support as a result of compressional forces from wall closure. Based on this study, use of trusses was discontinued, and an alternative support system of wood beams and posts was installed as needed to ensure the safety of miners working beneath the backfill in stope-ramp intersections.

"INTRODUCTIONGomez and Austin (1,2) have recently described calibration procedures for quantitative chemical analysis of particles by energy dispersive spectroscopy using particles mounted and polished in a resin matrix and scanned by an SEM under computer control. Their software is specifically designed for the analysis of Si, Al, Ca, Na, K, Fe and S in coal particles, and in this case the resin is loaded with iodine (3) to enable the exposed cross-section of an embedded coal particle to be differentiated from the matrix. However, the basic ideas of their procedures could be extended to any system of particles where it is desired to measure inorganic species in particles containing light elements such 0, C, H and N which are not directly detected. In these circumstances it is necessary to perform a quantitative determination of the measured components, so that the equivalent volume of light elements in the excited sample volume can be estimated by difference using ZAF and other corrections applied to the raw count intensities.Part of their procedure involves a new technique (2) for estimating background spectrum intensities; the intensity for a particular energy window is then subtracted from the total measured intensity for that window to enable the concentration of the corresponding element to be calculated. In addition, corrections for overlap of peak spectrums are applied. For example, Figure 1 shows some typical spectrums for known materials for the system they used, demonstrating a wide Gaussian spread about the theoretical peak energy. Since background spectrum and peak overlap corrections require a knowledge of the composition of the material, as does the application of the ZAF corrections, it is necessary to have an iterative solution of the equation sets, starting with estimates of the composition based on initial count rate corrected solely for dead time and detector efficiency."

A commercially available Halon 1301 extinguisher has been evaluated as part of an explosion-suppression system for use in coal mines. Studies were made both of the dispersion pattern of the Halon 1301 at an initial pressure of 280 psig, and of the efficacy of this suppressant against 9.5 percent methane-air flames. These flames were quenched successfully only when the suppressant was applied before the fireball diameter exceeded 18 inches.

This publication describes abandoned-mine fire-control work administered by the Bureau of Mines under cooperative agreements with State and local governments. The work was done by private contractors under the supervision of Bureau engineers. The work is authorized by Public Law 738, approved August 31, 1954, and Public Law 89-4, approved March 9, 1965. Earlier work was authorized by Interior Department Appropriations Acts for fiscal years 1949-55. A total of 70 fires have been controlled under this program in the eastern bituminous region. The nature and extent of the abandoned-mine fire problem in the bituminous region is discussed, and the methods used for controlling these fires are described. The methods that have been used, either singly or in combination, include loading out and cooling the burning material, installing fire barriers, surface sealing, and water and pneumatic flushing.

Chlorination of sulfide minerals and several prepared metal sulfides was studied. The resulting data were analyzed with respect to kinetics of the reactions and application to nonpolluting methods of winning metals from sulfide ores. Sulfides of iron, copper-iron, nickel, lead, zinc, silver, bismuth, arsenic, rhenium, molybdenum, and tungsten were investigated at temperatures up to 600° C. Copper-iron, lead, and zinc sulfides showed at least some product-controlled (parabolic) kinetics at the lower temperatures within the temperature ranges studied, but only nickel and silver sulfides had chlorination rates controlled by parabolic reaction kinetics in the commercially important temperature range of 450° to 600° C.

This paper describes the pumping operations at the Ajax, Cresson, and Vindicator dines in the Cripple Creek mining district of Colorado during the summer of 1936. At that time the three mines wore pumping 6,500 gallons of water per minute into the Roosevelt drainage tunnel. Cripple Creek is the most important gold district in the State; it has yielded gold valued at over $365,000,000. The mines engaged in pumping are among the largest producing properties in the district. Mine operators and managers for a number of years have known that the maintenance of health among the workers has an appreciable financial value, In order to maintain the health, it has been found ne cessery to imow; 1. The health hazards existing in the industry as a whole and the specific hazard in the individual mine. 2. The physical condition of applicants for employment as well as that of the old employees. This can be determined only by systematic physical examination of all applicants and of regular employees at intervals of at least once a year thereafter. 3. All cases of sickness that occur among the workers. No operator or manager, or personnel, medical, or safety organization can control or prevent sickness without knowing where, when, and under what conditions the sickness actually occurs. In order to obtain information as to the hazards of industry, investigations have been and are being made of the effects of the condi- tions both in the field under usual working practices and in the laboratory. In the field several factors are generally present which affect the health. The effect of these factors may be determined by studying each of them separately in the laboratory. However, both the field and the laboratory studies are limited in value in that such studies usually have been made over a comparatively short period. While we have some information as to their immediate effect, we do not know to what extent extreme heat, humidity, the presence of dust or other health hazards are the cause of disability. Mortality statistics are probably the most easily available indices as to the hazards of industry. As an example, a study of such statistics among coal miners of Indiana shows a marked increase in the death rate in 1918.

Two hydrated calcium aluminates , formed by side reactions in the leaching step and desilication step of the lime- soda sinter process , were investigated to better define their influence on alumina recovery . The two calcium aluminates , Caз [ Al ( OH) 6 ]₂ and зCa0.Al½ 03 · ( 8-12 ) H₂ ) , were prepared and identified by chemical and X- ray analysis . The relative proportions of each of these compounds formed in typical leach solutions at several temperatures were determined . The influence of free lime as a promoter of calcium aluminate formation was also investigated . The formation and precipitation from leach liquors of calcium aluminates contributes to the low alumina recoveries in the process . The presence of carbonate ion in the leach solution suppresses calcium aluminate formation and precipitation and results in higher alumina recovery . Hydrated calcium aluminates are formed in the aging of lime - soda sinters in the normal atmosphere .

The Bureau of Mines determined the factors involved in the corrosion of starting sheets used in the production of electrolytic zinc with the ultimate purpose of adapting zinc starting sheets to commercial practice . Under present practice , zinc is electrodeposited on aluminum cathodes and subsequently stripped for melting . The use of zinc instead of aluminum would eliminate the need to strip the deposit , thereby reducing the cost of handling and melting it , but zinc has not been suitable because it was too vulnerable to the corrosive attack of the electrolyte . Serious attack was found to be limited to the areas of the cathodes situated immediately above the surface of the electrolyte and to re - entrant corners . It was possible to avoid solution - level corrosion by immersing the starting sheets completely , exposing only a relatively heavy suspension member to solution - level attack . Zinc starting sheets could be made as reliable as aluminum and could be continued in residence for periods up to 39 days . Periods as long as a week were feasible under conditions similar to those found in commercial practice . A test of zirconium as a starting - sheet material showed that it promoted corrosion of the deposit to a lesser extent than aluminum and that the deposit adhered less tenaciously . These two properties lend themselves to the development of ways to strip deposits mechanically from zirconium starting sheets . Titanium was unsuitable for use as a starting - sheet material .

The rate of the heterogeneous reaction between titanium-oxygen solid solutions and titanium trichloride in molten sodium chloride was determined at high temperatures. In the alpha phase, the reaction rate decreases uniformly with the increasing concentration of oxygen. The gamma crystalline form of titanium (above 33 atomic percent oxygen) was much less reactive than the alpha phase, and the reaction rate approached zero at 50 atomic percent oxygen. The activation energy for the reaction of titanium-oxygen solution containing 22.8 percent oxygen was 11.7 kcal/mole of TiCl3 as compared with 8.3 kcal/mole of TiCl3 for pure titanium.
