One phase of the work of the Bureau of Mines in health and safety is promoting the use of safe, satisfactory, and reliable respiratory-protective devices. To insure that such devices will be available, the Bureau has established schedules of minimum-performance requirements for the approval of self-contained breathing apparatus (1),4/ gas masks (2), supplied-air respirators (hose masks, air-line respirators, and abrasive-blasting helmets, hoods, or masks) (3), dispersoid (dust, fume, and mist) respirators (4), and nonemergency gas respirators (chemical-cartridge respirators) (5). Approval tests of self-contained breathing apparatus are conducted by Health and Safety District B; approval tests of other types of respiratory-protective devices are conducted by the Branch of Health Research. Manufacturers of respiratory-protective devices may submit their equipment to the Bureau of Mines for approval under the requirements of these schedules. If the device, when tested by the Bureau, meets the schedule requirements, a certificate of approval will be granted, which not only states that the equipment has passed the schedule requirements but also gives information about the limitations of the device. If it is found at any time that approved devices do not meet the requirements of the pertinent schedule, the Bureau may rescind approval.

The mass spectra of 23 alkylthiophenes are presented , including 21 that have not been previously reported . Correlations between mass spectra and the structure of the thiophene homologs are discussed . Comparisons with , and corroboration of , earlier workers ' correlations and predictions are made . Several additional correlations are reported to enable the spectroscopist to identify the substituents on alkyl - substituted thiophenes , and the relationship of the mono - substituted and 2,5 - disubstituted alkylthiophenes is discussed in detail .

The Bureau of Mines established geologic factors affecting the mining of the Lower Kittanning coalbed to aid in coalbed minability studies and examined the occurrence of "wants" (places where coal is missing) and types of unstable roof rock strata. Trends established from mapping, including prediction of areas of high methane emissions, were extrapolated to unmined areas. "Wants" in the coalbed are of two types: Erosional and depositional. Erosional features occur where north-south-trending sand-filled channels cut into the coalbed. Variations in depositional environments have caused the coalbed to "split" into several thinner units. Slickensides, commonly indicative of unstable roof, are adjacent to and on the underside of sandstone channels; they were caused by differential compaction and by soft sediment sliding along the contact between the sandstone and adjacent shale. The frequency of unstable roof also increases where the interval between the Middle and Lower Kittanning coalbed is less than 30 feet. The zones of weakness at the contacts above and below the Middle Kittanning coalbed are the controlling factors for unstable roof in these strata. Methane emissions from the coalbed are controlled primarily by depth, fracture permeability, and rank of coal. Local geologic factors are coalbed thickness, associated rock strata, structure, and proximity to outcrop.

This publication presents original thermal data for a typical variety of perlite and supplies basic information for use in computing energy requirements in processes for expanding perlite. Perlite has been defined by Raiston 4/ as any silicious lava containing dissolved water in sufficient amount to errand into bubbles when the material is quickly heated to a suitable point in the softening range." The uses of expanded perlite in) the construction and ceramic industries have been discussed by Ralston 4/ and King. 5/ The work described here had a dual purpose: (1) It was desired to ascertain quantitatively, using a typical variety of perlite, just how firmly the contained water is held, and (2) it was desired to obtain basic thermal data sufficient for energy-requirement calculations in processes for expanding perlite.

[This Is the ninth in a series of reports on properties of commercial motor fuels, made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the interior. The first report gave data on motor gasoline sold during the winter of 1935-36.3/ The Present report presents analytical data for 2,033 samples, representing the products of approximately 80 companies, which, as in previous surveys, include both large and small suppliers. In addition, the Pacific coast is represented by data that were average by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before 'being submitted and are published exactly as they were received. As in previous surveys, the data are divided into the three groups of samples of regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines, and each group has been averaged separately. The cumber of samples, items, and brands comprising each group, exclusive of those of the Pacific coast, arc as follows: Regular price, 1,066 samples, 208 items, and 49 brands; premium price, 575 tamales, 154 items, and 38 brands; third-grade gasoline, 7;4 samples, 150 items, and 53 brands. The tungsten potentialities of the Combination mine were examined by a mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines in 1947. A report based upon his personal knowledge of the mine and the results of the examination contained recommendations for further investigation. This report presents factual data from Bureau of Mines field investigations begun in August 1947 and continued until December 1948, except for a 5-month recess during the first winter. The Combinat.ion mining property of 52 patented claims and 15 patented mill sites is in the Black Pine mining district, Granite County, Mont., 11 miles northwest of Philipsburg. The altitude in the mine vicinity is approximately 6,500 feet.

"INTRODUCTION An electrolytic process for the preparation of metallic cobalt has been developed recently in the Bureau of Mines Experimental Station at Boulder City, Nev. Chemical analysis shows this cobalt to contain impurities in small percentages, chief of which is nickel. It is desirable to be able to determine these impurities spectrographically. This report is concerned with a procedure for the spectrochemical determination of nickel in cobalt.Previous spectrographic work on cobalt was done by Breckpot and Mevis,/ who used the method of homologous pairs of lines. Two-stage electric smelting tests, using small submerged arc furnaces, were made on high-iron manganiferous materials from the Pioche District, Nev., and the Cuyuna Range, Minn. The object was to reduce sufficient iron in the first stage to give a slag with a favorable Mn to Fe ratio for smelting to ferromanganese in the second stage. The nodulized flotation concentrate from the Pioche District contained 29.2 percent Mn and had a Mn to Fe ratio of 2.3:l. When smelted with coke and silica or alumina as flux, more than 90 percent of the manganese was recovered in slags with Mn to Fe ratios of 10: :24:1. The Pioche slag was smelted to ferromanganese using coke and lime- stone or dolomite as flux. The ferromanganese was high in silicon but other- wise met specifications. Recovery of manganese to ferromanganese in this step was 73 to 78 percent. Overall recovery of manganese was about 70 percent. The sintered flotation concentrate from the Cuyuna Range material contained 12.9 percent Mn and had a Mn to Fe ratio of 0.3:1. When smelted with limestone as flux, about 83 percent of the manganese was recovered in a slag with a Mn to Fe ratio of about 6:1. The Cuyuna slag was smelted to ferromanganese with coke and limestone for flux. Recovery in this step was 61 percent of the manganese in a high silicon ferromanganese. Overall recovery of manganese was about 50 percent.

This report discusses the construction and use of an all-pressure psychrometric chart in which the requirements of simplicity of appearance and absolute accuracy have been waived, to a certain extent, to provide for the rapid determination of psychrometric data and for the rapid solution of air-conditioning problems of major interest to the mining industry. Many mines in which air-conditioning problems are important are situated at elevations far above sea level and embrace great differences in elevation - in excess of 8,000 feet in certain mines - throughout their airflow circuits. Under these conditions, the effects of variations in the pressure of the atmosphere upon the physical properties of the mixture of air and water vapor of which it is composed are considerable and should be taken into account in the solution of problems. The simple types of psychrometric charts in common use, such as the Carrier, Bulkeley, Hill, and Goff (American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers Guide), are not generally suitable, in that they are drawn for a single barometric pressure - 29.92 inches mercury.

The Bureau of Mines has been involved in the drilling of vertical, horizontal, and directional coalbed gas drainage boreholes for mine safety since 1964. In that time, boreholes have been drilled in most of the major coal regions of the United States under a wide variety of geologic conditions. Many of the geologic conditions that occur in the coal measures are detrimental to gas drainage; others may be beneficial. Analytical techniques to determine the gas content of coal samples and evaluate regional trends of gas distribution have been developed. Drilling techniques that maximize the acquisition of coalbed gas data and geologic information have been determined. Although some of the geologic factors influencing the placement and potential success of coalbed gas drainage boreholes have been reported in papers on individual projects, a complete, systematic compilation has not previously been available. The objective of this paper is to pro- vide information on specific geologic factors that should be considered prior to, during, and after the drilling of coalbed gas drainage bore-holes. Many of the commonsense considerations that have been learned through many years of Bureau of Mines experience, but have generally not been reported formally, are included for those who may be considering coalbed gas drainage drilling for the first time, or who have not had the opportunity to encounter a substantial number of geologic situations.

This paper, describing the milling practices at the White Bird concentrator, Picher, Okla., is one of a series on milling practices being published by the Bureau of Mines. The concentrator of the White Bird mine, Canam Metals Corporation, is located in almost the geographical center of the present Picher mining cam' in the Tri-State district, one-half mile east of the town of Picher, 1 mile south of the Kansas State line, and about 18 miles west of the Missouri State line.

Diamond -drilling blast holes at Eastern Magnetite Mine C is proving economical in boundary shrinks , in removing pillars not readily accessible for percussion drilling , and in driving scraper drifts . The cost per foot drilled is greater than for percussion drilling , but savings in associated factors outweigh this handicap . The rocks drilled include trap rock and magnetite ore . The mining method is the panel , block- caving system utilizing scraper sublevel drifts instead of branch raises to convey the ore to the haulage level . Diamond -drilling blast holes was begun early in 1945. Three rigs equipped with noncoring bits are now in active operation two shifts per day . They are owned by the company , and the drill operators are paid by the day . In shrinkage stopes the drill is mounted on a horizontal bar set against opposite walls of the stope . Stoping holes are horizontal , which gives better results in blasting and requires fewer set ups . In scraper drifts the drill is mounted on a horizontal bar clamped to two columns about feet apart . Trim holes around the periphery of the drift and reliever holes are drilled 50 to 80 feet in length . A 10 - foot wedge cut drilled with a stoper is blasted in conjunction with a corresponding length of the trim holes to effect a 10 -foot advance of the full- sized drift . Recent drilling averages 97 feet per machine shift , excluding time utilized in setting up and moving the machine , hand mucking , and barring down . The feet drilled per bit at present is 417. These data represent the average for drilling in both rock (waste) and ore . Percussion drilling utilizes three types of wet drills . Detachable bits are standard . Gage changes for new bits is 1/8 inch and for reconditioned bits 1/16 inch . The life of a bit is five uses . Resharpening is on contract . A drill carriage is used in haulage headings .

This Information Circular describes copper mining and concentrating methods, practices, and costs at the Silver Bell Unit of American Smelting and Refining Co., Pima County, Ariz. It is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. The Silver Bell mining district, one of the older districts in Arizona, is in the western part of the Silver Bell Mountains in Pima County, about 40 miles west of Tucson and about 20 miles southwest of Red Rock, a station on the main line railroad of the Southern Pacific Co. The Oxide and the El Tiro open-pit mines of the American Smelting and Refining Co. are in the district (fig. 1. The principal ore deposits are in T. 12S., R.8E., Gila and Salt River base line, at an altitude of about 3,000 feet. The present town of Silver Bell, established in 1952, is reached by a paved highway, the Avra Valley road, that turns west from Highway 84 at Plata siding near Rillito and extends westward 25 miles to the townsite (fig. 2). The present town is about 5 miles southeast of the old town of Silver Bell that flourished from 1900 to 1930.

I have been asked to speak briefly about recent progress in the mining industry of the United States, and to touch on the general advancement of en- gineering science as applied to mining. By recent, I shall mean within the past 20 or 30 years. Such a period includes a great many of the changes which are of particular interest to the present generation of engineers, and the undergraduates of today will hardly turn back farther than the beginning of the present century in their study of develop- ment of methods and processes. Also, my own professional life spans this period, and I have seen or have been aware of most of these developments as they were taking place. In my review of developments, for the sake of simplicity and clarity, I shall deal separately with improvements in metal mining, coal mining, mechanical and electrical machinery for mines, metallurgy, petroleum engineering, and safety practices. Under each of these headings I have set down what appear to me to be the outstanding changes brought about during the past 2 or 3 decades. Other points will occur to other engineers; I do not represent that the following re- view is complete; it is only intended to be suggestive. In general, improvements in mining and metallurgical practices have come gradually, the charges being effected little by little, simultaneously in widely scattered places, and through the experience and inventive genius of many men. These changes have has small beginnings, and are generally the cumulative result of many steady and unsensational progressions, which still continue. What we today might be inclined to consider the culmination of a series of betterments in mining is, of course, but an instantaneous phase of developments which will continue in the future at even a more rapid pace than they have in the past. We are looking at but a flesh of a moving picture, with an endless reel to come after we finally leave the theatre. Behind all the changes in the mineral industry, the driving force has been the increasing demand of an expanding population for more metals and minerals with which to advance civilization. Progressive mine management is placing increased emphasis on improved ventilation as a contribution to better safety , health , and productivity of miners . Management is on the alert for means of bettering the working environment by increasing the flow of air and distributing it more effectively to the working places , having in mind the necessity of avoiding exorbitant ventilation costs . A basic need in planning betterments of this kind is knowledge of existing rates of flow and air pressures , infCoorrmmaattiicon that is supplied through ventilation surveys . Some companies make partial surveys from time to time , but few make complete surveys on a routine basis . This report describes the practice of a large British anthracite -mining company , which operates 24 collieries in South Wales , in carrying out a routine program of ventilation surveying . Ventilation characteristics and climatic conditions in the working places of its collieries are determined at frequent intervals with a view to increasing the effectiveness of ventilation and protecting the health of workers . It is thought that many of the points of the procedure used in making the surveys and in compiling and reporting the results will be applicable to American practice and that a discussion of the program may be helpful to colliery managers who are planning similar work .

The deformation modulus of coal mine pillars theoretically can be reduced by drilling holes in advance of the mining face. This reduction of modulus along the edge of the pillar has the effect of decreasing the stress concentration in the roof; control of roof caving is thereby predicted. Initial field work indicated that a high horizontal stress field existed at the field test site: Subsequent field work was undertaken to confirm the high horizontal stress field and to attempt to relieve the horizontal stress in the immediate roof. A method of softening pillars in conjunction with normal mining activity was developed. Instruments to measure horizontal roof strain, roof parting, roof tilt at the rib, and changes in vertical and horizontal stress in the roof and in the coal were used. These instruments were installed in both softened and unsoftened entries and in locations to indicate the effect of vertical slots in the roof. Significant stress reduction due to pillar softening was indicated, but the effect of this reduction on roof stability was not established. The vertical roof slots relieved the horizontal stress in the immediate roof very effectively, and observations of roof conditions indicated that the slots definitely improved roof stability.

Research work in the Bureau of Mines cryogenic laboratory requires the use of high-sensitivity galvanometers of the d'Arsonval type in a building that is subject to unusually severe vibrations. A modified form of the galvanometer suspension described by Julius3 has damped the vibrations so successfully that a short note concerning it is thought to be desirable, The laboratory is on the site of the Amarillo helium plant near a building that houses gas engines of from 180 to 250 hp., driving compressors and electric generators. The distances from the galvanometers to the individual engines range from about 80 to 180 feet. The subsoil, consisting of black clay loam, transmits the impulses without much damping. The usual methods of protecting galvanometers from vibration were tried and proved fruitless. A Julius suspension purchased on the market was carefully installed in the hope that it would overcome the difficulty, but the conditions were too severe even for this elaborate arrangement. Several mudifications of the original Julius suspension, which were then introduced, resulted in almost complete elimination of all vibrational effects.

This paper describing the mining methods of the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods and costs in various mining districts of the United States. The story of mining at Inspiration is of particular interest because, after 127,812,000 tons of low-grade copper ore were successfully mined, the mining method was changed from block caving to open-pit. As the open pit became deeper, many features of the former block-caving operation that were exposed elucidated concepts of the mechanics of caving that previously had been assumed but not observed. The conversion to open-pit mining was accomplished by unique combinations of equipment and the introduction of ingenious engineering and operating practices that have extended the expected life of the mine for many years.
