The Rambler mine is in the Douglas mining district, Albany County, Wyo. (fig. 1). The property was first operated about 1870 for gold found in the outcrop of a leached ore body. Copper and metals of the platinum group were discovered, in 1900, or soon thereafter, and intermittent mining was done until 1918, when a fire destroyed the surface plant, and the underground workings caved. The mine has since been idle. The Bureau of Mines conducted a development project on the property from October 1942 to October 1943, with a recess period between November 1942 and August 1943. Ten diamond drill holes, totaling 1,859 linear feet, were drilled on the property (fig. 2). The mine dump was sampled after preparation with a bulldozer. Assay determination and spectrographic analyses disclosed small quantities of copper and metals of the platinum group in the samples. Determinations were made on 11 samples from the diamond drill holes and 23 samples from the mine dump. The assay results and spectrographic analyses are given in tables 1 and 2. The logs of the diamond drill holes are given in an appendix to this report.

"The size distributions of carefully screened 2 size fractions of ground materials were determined using a Microtrac laser dif-fractometer. The size distributions were fitted to the empirical function P(x) = 1/[1 + (x50/x)1] where P(x) is cumulative mass fraction less than Microtrac size, x. The standard deviation of A for a 50 second test time was approximately 0.5, so that seventeen test times give a mean with an estimated error within t 0.25 (95% confidence level). Values of were 5.44, 4.82, 4.40 for a coal ground under different conditions, indicating statistically different shape distributions; the average value for mica was 2.91 owing to the high aspect ratio of the particles. The ratio of x50 to the geometric mean sieve size was 1.2 for the coal and 0.70 for mica.1 IntroductionKoka and Trass have presented evidence [1,2] that materials ground in the Szego mill [3] give different shapes depending on the milling conditions. The variations in shape were deduced qualitatively by viewing SEM photomicrographs of selected 1/2 screen fractions. This paper quantifies their observed differences in shape by using measurements of the size distributions of screen fractions examined in a laser diffractometer [4] (Microtrac, Model 7991). The basic concept is that particles of 'a given ""screen"" size will give a wider distribution of ""Microtrac"" size when the particles are flaky with high aspect ratios, and a narrower distribution when the particles approach the cubical and spherical geometries.2 TheoryAustin and Shah [5] have shown that coal screened within a 1. 1/2 upper-to-lower sieve size range will give rise to a much wider distribution of Microtrac size. The Mateen deposit comprises two large spodumene-bearing pegmatite dikes that outcrop along the, side and crest of a hill overlooking 'Rill City in the southern Black Hills of South Dakota. The Bureau of Mines investigated the Mateen deposit as part of a comprehensive study of the lithium mineral-production possibilities in the Black Hills area. The work was undertaken during the second World War, when the demand for certain lithium salts and compounds exceeded the small productive capacity of the industry. During the course of the investigation, the Bureau of Mines took 61 large channel samples from surface trenches, 4 channel samples from a shaft, and 3 from the face of an open cut. In addition, 8 diamond core-drill holes were completed to investigate the attitude of one of the dikes at depth. Metallurgical tests were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the feasibility of beneficiating spodumene-bearing ores from the Mateen dikes.

"At the beginning of 1920 a general feeling of optimism was noted in many talc-producing districts. The industry seems to have recovered from the temporary depression of the first half of 1919 and many mills are running at capacity production with their entire output for 1920 contracted for. The imports of talc for 1919 were only slightly larger than in 1918 by weight and probably no more by value. Thus foreign competition has not begun to be seriously felt. Several new companies in this country have been organized, some to operate new deposits and others to continue the work done by others.An interesting phase of the present situation is the possibility of increased use of talc in paint. There is a shortage of barium sulfate used as,paint filler. Since, for some uses, talc is considered second only to BaSo4 as a filler for paint, it is possible that part of the shortage could be relieved by an increased use of talc.A series of physical tests upon all pigment materials used in the manufacture of paints is being conducted for the Paint Manufacturers Association of the United States. It is important that all types of talc be represented in these tests. Producers of finely ground talc, 200 mesh and finer, are urged to submit samples of at least two pounds each of these grades that are available to paint makers with trade name and quality data, to the Institute of Industrial Research, 19th & B Streets, Washington, D. C., where the tests are being conducted.The Talc Products Company, Inc., Washington Building, Los Angeles, California, has recently been organized to develop a large body of talc one mile north of Riggs, San Bernardino County, California, This deposit contains a compact, white talc which can be sawed into crayons. The company's mill, at Los Angeles) is equipped with a unit of the Raymond system of grinding and air separation, and pencil sawing machines. It is reported that the pencils are being successfully used in Pacific Coast ship yards.The mining of talc where no mill is owned by the operator and the consequent sale of talc in its crude massive state has not proved profitable in a number of cases recently noted. Under exceptional circumstances, where mining costs are low and the product can be sold to a mill near the mine, the operation maybe profitable, but this condition is not common. One mine of this type has recently closed down, at least temporarily; but a second, more fortunately situated, in another district, is continuing operations, although plans are being made to erect a mill in the early spring. Most satisfactory results are ordi¬narily obtained where the mine and mill are owned by the same company.The sale of the Balmat mine of the International Pulp Company, near Gouverneur, N. Y., to J. H. McLear, Gouverneur, and H. G. McLear of New York, has been reported. It is stated that a large part of the property has been already leased to the Sylvia Lake Company, who will operate it. ""Cement, Hill, and Quarry""* states that ""the first mining done on this property was for silver and lead, but it developed into a good zinc producing property and later it was worked for its talc deposits. It has passed through several hands, the American Pulp Co., the Union Talc Co., and the International Pulp Co., all having had it in successive periods since 1891."""

"INTRODUCTION Diesel-powered locomotives designed specifically for underground operation were used in the construction of some of the tunnels that comprise the Delaware Aqueduct in New York State. Before this there had been limited use of Diesel-powered equipment such as trucks, bulldozers, and shovels in tunnel construction in various parts of the country, but this equipment was used without modification for underground use and, in some instances, appar¬ently without due consideration of the hazards that might be created by the introduction of fuel-burning equipment into confined underground spaces.As certain definite advantages were apparent if Diesel haulage could be used in tunnel construction in some sections of the Aqueduct, the contractors who were to construct the tunnels in these sections were desirous of using, this type of haulage equipment if it could be used with safety. This matter was given careful consideration by the various agencies concerned with the establishment of safe practices on the Aqueduct project before tunnel driving was started. Of chief concern were the quantities of toxic or objectionable materials that would be discharged into the tunnel air by the exhaust of the locomotives and the volume of ventilating air that would be required to dilute these exhaust gas products to concentrations permissible in the atmosphere of working places."

[The explosability of coal dusts has been the subject of many investigations studies have been conducted in laboratories, in galleries and in coal faire; of several countries to obtain information on the causes, development, and prevention of mine explosions. Early laboratory experiments on it American colas dealt with pressures developed in test bomb by explosions of dust clouds and with, the effects of gas in the dust atmosphere.5/ Later, the emphasis shafted to evaluation of the relative fleet flammability and the ignition temperatures of coal dusts.6/ Much worthwhile effort was devoted to the development of Laboratory apparatus and test procedures that gave good correlation with large-scale explosion tests in the Experimental cost mine. The Bureau of Mines investigated methods for removing dragline bucket wire rope terminations with the objective of finding efficient methods that are safer than the method most commonly used at U.S. surface mines, which is to use the explosive impact of a projectile fired from a cannon to remove the rope termination. Removal of a wire rope termination for repair or replacement requires separation of the wedge and socket that lock together to secure the rope end. The Bureau investigated currently used methods and improved upon and tested two safer alternate methods for removing wire rope terminations. A cannon test program was conducted, using 40-and 50-gr primer (detonating) cord, to establish the possible force produced with a 4-in-bore cannon and a 55-lb projectile. Wedge and socket units supplied from cooperating mines were separated under controlled conditions to establish data on separation force requirements. The two alternate methods investigated were use of the force generated by (1) a pendulum ram and by (2) a portable hydraulic pusher. Both methods are capable of providing sufficient force to effect wedge and socket separations on draglines with up to 78-yd3 buckets under normal conditions.

The investigative work described in this report was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines under a cooperative agreement with the department of mining engineering of the University of Illinois and the Illinois State Geological Survey." The purpose of this agreement was to provide for a comprehensive investigation of coal-mining conditions in the State, with especial reference to the possibility of lessening waste in the mining and preparation of coal and of reducing the dangers to which miners are exposed. The Bureau of Mines paid particular attention to those phases of the investigation that were of general interest from their bearing on safety and efficiency in the coal-mining industry as a whole. Thus, it studied the occurrence of gas (methane) in the mines of the southern part of the State," tested the inflammability of the coal dust from many mines, examined the efficiency of the control of ventilating currents, and investigated the factors affecting the humidity of mine air with respect to their bearing on the occurrence of mine explosions. Following the establishment of the fact that under certain conditions dry bituminous coal dust is inflammable, there arose the problem of finding efficient methods of preventing or limiting coal-dust explosions. Experiments in the gas-and-dust gallery at the Pittsburgh testing station of the Bureau of Mines verified the fact that certain dusts that explode violently when dry are rendered inert by proper humidi- .fication of the atmosphere within the gallery, and the importance of humidity as a factor in limiting the inflammability of coal dust in a mine is demonstrated by the fact that there has never been in Illinois a dust explosion during the summer months, whereas the records show a number of dust explosions during cold weather. It is easy to see that the warm moisture-laden air that enters a mine in the summer must deposit moisture on cooling, whereas the cold and relatively dry air that enters in winter must take up moisture as it becomes heated in traveling through the mine.

This is one of a series of pacers being published by the United States Bureau of Mines, describing mining and milling methods at crushed-stone plants throughout the United States. These pacers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total production costs. Although the publication of total production cost might not be advisable in some instances, yet a knowledge of operating costs is essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called o this differentiation in order that there will be no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations. This paper deals with the quarrying and crushing methods used at the Plainville plant of the New Haven Trap Rock Co., which produces annually between 275,000 and 300,000 tons of trap rock, Although pct the largest quarry operated by the company, it typifies the standard methods used by all the quarries in producing crushed stone and has one or two rather unique operating features. The cost of production at this plant is close to the average cost at all quarries of the company.

The effects of impurity elements silicon , aluminum, copper , nitrogen , and manganese , at 50 to 300 ppm, on properties of the zirconium alloy Zircaloy 2 were investigated . Variations in microstructure , mechanical properties , and corrosion behavior in some inorganic acid and salt solutions were observed with variations in level of impurity element . Corrodents were solutions of sulfuric acid , phosphoric acid , copper chloride , and iron chloride . Silicon was found to modify annealed microstructures by spheroidizing and dispersion of secondphase material throughout grains . Silicon or manganese improved ultimate and yield strength of the alloy without loss in ductility . All five elements affected corrosion rates of the alloy , the effect being generally different for each element .

Guidelines are provided for the design of explosion-proof electrical enclosures that will meet MSHA certification requirements according to Part 18, Title 30, of the Code of Federal Regulations, and fulfill their intended service underground. The guide covers only those aspects of design which affect enclosure strength, ruggedness, endurance and flame path, i. e., the enclosure ability to properly contain an internal explosion. Internal static and explosion pressures, external impact and thermal heating load are treated as well as the proper selection of materials and welding procedures.

These extracts are sufficient for the purpose of emphasizing the practical difficulties of averaging iron-mining conditions so as to make general vital statistics concerning iron miners useful Tor scientific. purposes. It is self-evident that conclusions based upon iron miners, so called, working largely above ground and employed chiefly in open-cut blasting ~perations or the management of steam shovels, etc., can not be made to apply to miners working continuously underground with an exposure of dust and other conditions quite similar to underground mining methods in the extraction of gold, silver, copper, lead, and other ores. The so-called "milling" process as practiced on the Mesabi Range may here be referred to, the same being explained in the report of the Immigration Commission to consist "in the sinking of a shaft on the edge of the ore body from which a tunnel is run in under the ore and connected with a vertical, funnel-shaped hole from under the surface, through which the ore is 'milled' down into the tramcars placed under the opening under the tunnel. After being loaded at the bottom of the funnelshaped hole, the cars are run out to the bottom 0.£ the shaft. where the ore is dumped into skids or elevators and raised to the ~urface and unloaded into the tipple, where it is loaded into thecal'S ready for shipment." It is properly pointed out that the so-called " milling" process employs some of the features of both the open-pit and underground methods of mining. For these and many other reasons it is self-evident that general statistics concerning iron mining are quite likely to be inconclusive and possibly seriously misleading. Aside from the foregoing the problem is seriously complicated by the extensive employment of foreign labor in the iron-mining ind ustries of the Lake Superior districts and of Negro labor in iron mining in Alabama. Within recent years, according to the report of the Immigration Commission, a considerable displacement has occurred in t~e quality of labor employed in iron mining, the displacement bemg referred to as "progressive," in that one race or group of races has entered the region and taken up the work offered in the lower occupations, the race or races already holdinz such positions having. moved up in the scale of occupation leaving the field to the newcomers. This statement is quite suggestive in that it indicates a comparatively short average trade life or trade exposure, quite at variance with the relatively long average ascer- MINES, QUARRIES, ORE REDUCTION, AND SMELTING. 377 tained for the iron mines of New <Tersey. It is said in the report of the Immigration Commission that- The Scandinavians and the other northern European races have given way to the Finns and Slovenians, and in the open-pit mines the Finns and Slovenians have given way to the south Italian, Montenegrins, Croatins, and other southern European races. In the underground mines the common labor and mining is chiefly done bv Finns and Slovenians because the races from the southern countries can not stand the heavy physical work required in this kind of mining. Here, too, is found the same upward movement, for formerly the English (Cornishmen) and Scandinavians' were in the lower occupations in the underground properties, At present the south Italians, Serbians, Montenegrins, and Croatians are performing the most menial work and are the races who are now at the foot of the scale of occupations. It is a matter of conjecture on the ranges as to who will push these races up or whether they will remain the commou laborers of the region. Inquiry was made into the prevalence of diseases OIl the ranges, but more with reference to outside sanitary conditions than to occupational exposure. The most common diseases on the ranges, however, were ascertained to be pulmonary tuberculosis and typhoid fever, and to a lesser extent smallpox and venereal diseases. With -cgard to pulmonary tuberculosis it is said that the disease is most Eevalent among the Finns and the Swedes, and is chiefly imported, I'here is no reference to a possible connection between disease occur- ~ence and occupational conditions, above or below ground, but there .s no evidence that this aspect of the iron-mining industry was made .he subject of a special investigation.

The Federal Bureau of Mines provided five test materials--amosite, short-and long-fiber chrysotile, crocidolite, and nonfibrous tremo1ite--to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) for studies on the biological effects of orally ingested asbestos-related materials. An inter-agency agreement between the Bureau and NIEHS made possible this program to characterize these test materials. The Bureau in turn received support through contracts with the Ontario Research Foundation for the milling of amosite and crocidolite, and with the University of Maryland for microscopic measurements. The five test materials, which were supplied in quantities of 960 to 1,200 pounds each, were characterized by chemical-instrumental analysis for elemental composition, surface area, density, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, mineralogy, and particle size analyses. Particle size distributions were emphasized because of the current theories relating adverse biological effects to length-width characteristics of durable elongated particles.

This report presents the results of washability examinations of seven coals from the principal coal-producing fields of Montana. A complete performance test of the Baum-type jig operated at one of the mines is included, as are the results of cleaning tests made on two of the coals in a dense-medium pilot plant. The coals examined from the Red Lodge, Bull Mountain, and Forsyth fields are comparatively easy to clean. Ash contents of 5 to 10 percent can be obtained at yields of washed coal ranging from 90 to 95 percent. The coal from the Great Falls field, however, could not be cleaned readily to less than 14 percent ash, and the rejection of impurity would amount to over 25 percent. The two coals treated in the dense-medium pilot plant were characterized by sharp separation of impurity, high recovery efficiency, and satisfactory reduction in ash content.

The design of a dual-inlet system for a Consolidated model 21-103C mass spectrometer is described in detail. The system permits both high-mass and low-mass samples to be run by using a single instrument. The difficulties of using a single instrument for both purposes are given and a method of minimizing these difficulties through the use of the present design is discussed, After examining the experience of five years of use, the conclusions are that the bimodal operation is practical and the low-mass analyses had nearly the same precision as before the modifications to the instrument were made. In 1951, O&apos;Neal and Wier.5/ published the first description of the modifications made to a mass spectrometer so that the spectra of hydrocarbons with molecular weights up to 600 could be obtained. Further discussion of the equipment of O&apos;Neal appeared in 1953.6/ Also, Brown, Melpolder, and Young7/ described a parallel inlet system designed to reduce sorption effects at room temperature.

A small-scale laboratory coke oven similar to those described by Swiniarski, Cryan, and Altieri and Fuchs, Sandhoff, Taylor, and Gauger was built by the Bureau of Mines in 1943. Tests made since that time have indicated that such a small oven is of questionable value in predicting the coking pressures to be expected in commercial coke ovens. This summary of the work done has been prepared at the suggestion of the Advisory Committee to the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association Survey of Carbonizing Prop¬erties of American Coals.
