A simplified, routine method for determining lithium in lithium-bearing rock is presented. The sample is decomposed by repeated treatments with nitric, hydrofluoric, and perchloric acids. Since this procedure does not appreciably dissolve beryl, interference by beryllium (the principal interfering cation) is minimized for most samples. The salts are brought into solution with water and enough citric acid-ammonium citrate buffer is added to make the final volumetric dilution 0.20 M with respect to citrate. The addition of citrate greatly reduces anion interference in the hydrogen-oxygen flame, slightly increases the intensity of the lithium 671 millimicron emission line, and reduces the effect of most of the interfering cations to the extent that analytical separations are not necessary. The accuracy of results of single determinations of lithium in a pegmatite containing spodumene, lithium-bearing mica, and beryl are approximately equal to that obtained by other flame methods, INTRODUCTION This investigation was undertaken in Bureau of Mines laboratories to develop a reliable, rapid, routine analytical method for determining lithium in lithium-bearing minerals. The requirements of the procedure were that the method should be applicable to the analysis of a variety of lithium-bearing ores and test products, and the results would be reasonably accurate for materials containing 0.05 to 8 percent Li20.

The Bureau of Mines used laminar hot air jets of l/8- to 3/4-inch diam-eter to determine the hot gas ignition temperatures of various combustible vapor-air mixtures. The combustibles were n-hexane, n-octane, n-decane, a hydrocarbon jet fuel (JP-6), and an adipate ester aircraft engine oil (MIL-L- 7808). Minimum ignition temperatures occurred at a fuel to air weight ratio of about 0.5 and were not greatly sensitive to variations of fuel concentra¬tion. Moderate variations of jet velocity also had little influence on these ignition temperatures. However, these temperatures decreased with increase in heat source dimensions (jet diameter). The hot gas ignition temperatures of the combustibles were not necessarily much greater than corresponding autoignition and wire ignition temperatures when the size (,F the heat source and the ignition criterion were the same.

"This report presents the physical properties and related geological and petrographic data of some 84 rock types from operating mines, quarries, or blasting research test sites. These fundamental rock data were collected as a quantitative approach to underground mining problems, blasting research, or other related studies; however, the data are equally applicable to any problem wherein rock characteristics are important factors. Stress-strain curves are given where available, and the standardized procedure for determining elastic constants from static tension tests is described. Computed (laboratory) and measured (field) free-medium velocities are compared in those instances where such data are available. A chart is given showing both the optimum and minimum number of test specimens for the various core sizes employed in the Bureau of Mines standardized physical-property tests. Rock-type, geographical, and geological indexes are included to aid the reader in locating physical-property data in this and previously published Bureau of Mines physical-property reports.INTROD'OCTI ONThis report presents the physical properties of 84 rock types tested from 16 different projects (sections 37-52). The organization of the Explosives Division is indicated by the accompanying chart (fig. 1). As this has been discussed in a previous report3/, it will not be considered further in this report. The activities of the various units are outlined below. I. INFLAMMABILITY OF GASES AND VAPORS4/ Determination of the Explosion Hazards of Combustible Gases and Vapors Found in Mines and Industries The Explosives Division maintains, at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station, a laboratory specially equipped for the determination of the explosion hazards of combustible gases and vapors. Of particular importance, is the determination of the chemical composition within which explosions may occur and beyond which there is no danger of explosion, combustion or inflammation. These limits, known as the limits of inflammability, as determined by this and other laboratories, have been compiled in Bulletin 279 of this Bureau. The last revised edition (1931) of this bulletin has been exhausted. Since it was published, the Pittsburgh laboratory has determined the limits of about 40 combustibles and has ascertained more precisely ant accurately many previously published limits.

In an investigation of the incineration of combustible wastes, the Bureau of Mines studied the effect of dimensional parameters, process variables, and fuel properties on the operation of an incinerator that consisted of a single cylindrical combustion chamber in which all combustion air was supplied tangentially above the fuel. Construction and operation of three designs of such a device proved that the tangential overfire air design is effective in providing efficient combustion and low concentration of particulate matter in the effluent gas. A correlation was found that related burning rate with air rate, chamber diameter, and inlet port diameter. In one of the incinerator models, ignition was by radiation from a preheated surface. The temperature of this surface was required to be 1,400° to 1,600° F to insure ignition of moist refuse; however, this had little effect on combustion rates. In the combustion of moist refuse, evaporation of the water proceeded through the fuel bed as a wave, with an ignition wave following the evaporation.

This report presents a detailed study of low temperature, entrained-bed carbonization of an Australian coking coal. The coal studied was high-volatile B bituminous from the Foybrook mine, an open-cut operation in the Liddell seam, New South Wales, Australia. Carbonization was conducted in an 8-inch diameter, continuous vertical reactor at several temperatures from 960° to 1,300° F. It was demonstrated that this bituminous coal can be carbonized within this temperature range to produce tar and a nonagglomerated char, without prior oxidation or char recirculation. Carbonization rates from 138 to 287 lb/hr (as-carbonized basis) were investigated. It was found that the carbonization temperature and the air-to-coal ratio must exceed minimum values to insure continuous operation. At the higher air-to-coal ratios employed, all or most of the carbonization heat was provided by internal combustion with air in the reactor. At the lower air-to-coa1 ratios, part of the heat for carbonization was supplied externally. On the moisture-and ash-free basis, the yield of tar plus light oil ranged from about 26 to 44 gallons per ton, and the char yield ranged from approximately 1,160 to 1,370 pounds per ton. The heat in the gas ranged from about 900 to 3,000 Btu/lb of moisture-and ash-free coal. Carbonization product yields correlated well with air-to-coal ratio and carbonization temperatures. The volatile matter in the char was found to be temperature dependent. At 1,300° F carbonization, the volatile matter in the char was 8.7 percent (dry basis), whereas at 9600 F carbonization, the residual volatile matter was about 16 to 18 percent (dry basis).

The Bureau of Mines gathered test data on the use of a continuous borer in mining an anthracite bed, which was 30 feet thick on a pitch of 15° to 45°. Gangways were driven with the continuous borer, ventilation openings between gangways were driven with a large-diameter auger, and the blocks of coal between completed gangways were mined by the long-hole method, Conveyors were used to transport the mined coal. The continuous borer operated on a coal floor that was frequently soft because of heaving. The continuous borer could not bore openings on a grade exceeding 27 percent (15° pitch). Because 150 was also the lower limit of the pitch, of the bed, the continuous borer was used only to drive gangways. The continuous borer virtually filled the workplace, leaving insufficient space to place heavy-duty timber and cushioning material between the timber and coal back to allow for normal expansion of the uncut coal. The light? weight yieldable steel arch against the coal back gave inadequate support to control convergence, which in a disturbed area sometimes occurred with explosive violence. This exposed the machine operator to a hazardous condition, since a satisfactory solution could not be found, the company discontinued the use of the continuous borer.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of various bisbenzylisoquinoline (BBIQ) alkaloids on respiratory burst activity of alveolar macrophages and to characterize the interaction of these drugs with alveolar phagocytes. BBIQ alkaloids were chosen for study because they exhibit a wide range of antifibrotic potencies in a rat model, with tetrandrine being very effective and tubocurarine being ineffective. These drugs inhibited zymosan-stimulated oxygen consumption with a potency sequence of tetrandrine (IT) = fangchinoline (FA) > berbamine (BE) ., cepharanthine (CE) "" cycleanine (CY} ~ tubocurarine (TU). This inhibition of respiratory burst activity could not be attributed to a drug-induced decline in the ATP content of these pneumocytes. Drug binding to alveolar macrophages was directly dependent on temperature and drug concentration. The sequence for binding capacity was FA > TT = BE = CY > CE ~ TU. Therefore, there was no simple relationship between binding capacity and inhibitory potency. Binding capacity was not related to lipophilicity of these alkaloids. In addition, tetrandrine failed to bind to metabolically dead cells or sonicated macrophage preparations. These data suggest that the interaction of BBIQ alkaloids with phagocytes is not simply nonspecific binding to membrane lipids. Alteration of the cytoskeletal system with vinblastine, taxol, or cytochalasin B decreased tetrandrine binding by approximately 33% when adtkd separately and by 93% when added jointly. Pre-exposure of alveolar macrophages to stimulants increased the ability of BBIQ alkaloids to inhibit both oxygen consumption and superoxide release. These data suggest that the mechanism by which BBIQ alkaloids inhibit activation of phagocytes involves microtubules and bules and microfilaments. Pre-exposure of macrophages to stimulants would change the conformation of cytoskeletal components and may make these structures more susceptible to drug interaction.

"INTRODUCTION Several mining properties in the Pine Creek area of the Coeur d'Alene mining region of Idaho were examined by engineers 3/ of the Bureau of Mines in 1942. As a result, a broad program of exploration was recommended for the area, particularly in the eastern end, where chances for the discovery of new ore shoots seemed favorable. This report describes the work done and the factual information obtained by the Bureau of lanes.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. An ethanolamine purification unit for removing carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide from Firscher-Tropsch synthesis gas was installed at the Bureau of Mines synthetic liquid fuels demonstration plant at Louisiana, Mo. The unit was a surplus Radford Girbotol unit from the Missouri Ordnance Works modified for a capacity of 90,000 std. cu. ft per hour of synthesis gas at 450 p.s.i.g., operating pressure. The hydrogen sulfide loading of the feed gas was specified at 500 grains per 100 cu. Ft. The unit was designed by the Girdler Corp. and installed by the Koppers Co. Initial operations were conducted far 11 days in May 1951. Thereafter 7 additional runs were made, varying lo duration from 8 to 54 days. The last run was terminated on May 29, 1953, the total time the Plant wars in operation being 219 days.

The heats of formation of anhydrous ferric sulfate and anhydrous indium sulfate were determined by solution calorimetry. At 298.15° K the heats of formation from the metal, rhombic sulfur, and oxygen were -615.6 ±O.7 kcal/mole for ferric sulfate and -649.6 ±O.6 kcal/mole for indium sulfate. Heats of decomposition at 298.15° K are given for the reaction that forms metal oxide, sulfur dioxide, and oxygen) and for the reaction that forms the metal oxide and sulfur trioxide.

This study was undertaken to obtain some fundamental information about hazardous mixtures of coal dust and methane (firedamp) likely to occur in mines. Fuel concentration limits for ignition of mixtures of coal dust, methane, and air have been determined by a hot-gas ignition method. The limiting concentration of each of the two fuels was usually less than that corresponding to its lean flammability limit in air. The lean limits of flammability of coal dust vary with the type and size of the dust; in this study coal dust concentrations were less than 80 mg/liter. Ignition jets were turbulent pulses (emerging from a channel of 0.5 cm diam) resulting from explosions of stoichiometric mixtures of methane, oxygen, and nitrogen, Temperatures of the ignition jets were varied by changing the oxygen index (OI) = O2/(02 + Nj2) of the primary methane-oxygen-nitrogen mixture (adiabatic flame temperatures from 2,000° to 3,000° K). The objectives of the study were to establish quantitative relations between concentrations of each fuel at ignition limits of hybrid mixtures and to study the mechanism of ignition of these hybrid mixtures by hot turbulent gases, Empirical equations were fitted to concentrations for four coals, namely) Pittsburgh Seam (sizes A, B, and C), Sewell No.2 Seam, pocahontas No.3 Seam, and anthracite. Equivalences of coal dust to methane were computed from these equations; equivalence being defined as -Ac/Am, where c is the coal dust concentration and m is the methane concentration, each in milligrams per liter of air. It was found that the equivalence increases as the temperature of the hot-gas jet decreases. In general, the equivalence is also an inverse function of volatile content of the coal and a direct function of the particle size, However, volatile con-tent in itself is not a sufficient correlating variable, nor is the specific surface area of the coal dust.

The evaporation of crude oil without doubt causes one of the largest single losses to which the oil is subjected after it is taken from the ground. The few days during which crude oil is stored on the lease before being taken by the pipe line, causes an aggregate loss per year from evaporation estimated at 122,100,000 gallons of gasoline in the Mid-Continent field alone. This has a value, at 22 cents per gallon, of $26,880,000 and represents about 3 per cent of the total gasoline produced in the United States from all fields and all sources. HIGH ACTIVITY, continuing the substantial recovery from the slump of 1954, characterized the domestic nonfuels-mining industries during 1956 Income generated in producing nonfuel minerals and mineral products3 increased 9 percent over 1955 as compared with a 6-percent increase for all industries. Thus, the 1956 performance of the mineral industries, while not as dramatic as the 27-percent increase obtained in 1955, continued to exceed the gains of the total economy. Other measures of mineral activity strengthen this conclusion. The index of physical volume of mineral production, presented for the first time as an integral part of this review, reflects significant gains in all major sectors during 1956; and, although the overall increase was diminished somewhat by the steel and iron-ore strike in July 1956, the all-mineral index (including fuels) reached a new high.

"Those having an intimate knowledge of the relation between production and consumption of crude oil in the United States have realized for some time that production will not be able to keep pace with consumption. The American public has had this called forcibly to its attention by the increased prices of gasoline and crude oil, and by the recent shortage of gasoline on the Pacific Coast. In substance, each year we are consuming millions of barrels of oil more than we produce, and this deficit must be made to by importations. A careful analysis of the situation makes it evident that we need every barrel of oil that can be produced.Need for the Petroleum Production Engineer.Under present production practices perhaps 80% of the oil still remains in the sand. (See Lewis, J.O., Methods for increasing the recovery from oil sands, U. S. Bureau of Mines, Bulletin 148 p. 8.) Many wells are making water, and even whole pools are being flooded. The burning of fuels under field boilers is not generally efficient, and often gas is not made to do its full duty in bringing the oil to the well.In the past the producer has had to combat these and other problems single-handed. He has been too busy to give them special attention, and he has had little competent engineering advice. Oil, gas, and water occur underground according to certain natural laws. Undoubtedly an engineer, who is familiar with production practices and understands the fundamentals of the accumulation of oil and gas, can be of service to the producer by specializing on certain problems with a view of getting mare oil from the sand. In every other enterprise of similar magnitude the engineer is regarded as a necessary unit to its operation, and he should be so in the production of oil. His field of work should extend to every phase of production in which science and engineering and geology"

"INTRODUCTION The first important discovery of petroleum in New Mexico was near Dayton, Eddy County, where the Brown well was drilled in 1909, and small quantities of oil were produced. In 1911 and 1912 wells were drilled in McKinley County, but commercial production did not begin until the discovery of the Hogback field, San Juan County, in 1922. The discovery well in the Artesia field, Eddy County, drilled in 1923, gave impetus to active drilling in many areas. Since 1924 New Mexico has produced petroleum in commercial quantities and since 1930 the State has joined the ranks of the big produc¬ing States, being sixth or seventh in total production in recent years.Production by years. 1924 to 1940, inclusive, taken from annual figures in Bureau of Mines Minerals Yearbook, are given in table 1. The total production shown is 274,331,000 barrels. Andreas 3/ has published production figures for the year 1940 and a resume of all production to the end of 1940. Data from his report are presented in table 2 for each field sampled. The cumulative production, as given by Andreas, is 270,618,575 barrels."

This report was prepared by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to present a brief history of the listing of Iron Mountain Mine as a Superfund site on the National Priorities List (NPL) and subsequent remedial actions. The mine area is located on 4,400 acres near Redding, CA, and includes underground workings, an open-pit area, waste rock dumps, and tailings piles. This property involves multiple sources of acid mine drainage (AMD) that are high in copper, zinc, and cadmium. The selected remedial actions, based on the Record of Decision of 1986, would partially cap the Richmond mineralized zone to reduce infiltration of clean water, divert clean surface waters away from contaminated areas, fill surface subsidence areas, and enlarge the Spring Creek debris dam to provide increased surge capacity. Site remediation efforts at Iron Mountain are well into the remedial design-remedial action phase. Costs to date for remedial action are $7.5 million. Details of activities and designs of remedial elements are presented and future activities discussed.

In the design of plants to separate helium from natural gas, it is necessary to estimate the enthalpies of the various streams at various positions in the process. This Bureau of Mines report surveys the various methods that have been used to determine enthalpies and gives information on the organizations with such capabilities. The minimum information required for developing an enthalpy diagram is presented, and the relative merits of the various methods are discussed. It is concluded that methods that require no mass flow rate or energy measurements are to be preferred.

Defluorination studies on refractory fluoride - bearing compounds and minerals , particularly on partly defluorinated residues from high - temperature pyrohydrolysis , required a dependable and reasonably accurate analyticalcontrol method for the analysis of fluorine . The difficulty in liberating fluorine from the fluorides of metallic elements such as aluminum, zirconium , and rare earths by steam- distillation can be largely overcome if the distillation is made from a sulfuric - phosphoric acid solution of a sodium carbonate fusion of the sample material and if the distillation temperature is maintained at about 155 ° C. The data presented in this paper show that liberation of fluorine by this method is more complete and proceeds more rapidly than by usual distillations from perchloric or sulfuric acid alone or a mixture of phosphoric and perchloric acids . Fluorine in amounts ranging up to about 140 mg can be recovered by collecting only about 300 ml of distillate . Determination of fluoride in the distillate is made by the usual thorium nitrate titration .
