Laboratory experiments were conducted to study the carbon deposition characteristics of a high-gravity, paraffin-base crude oil. The results of these experiments indicate that a fuel supply adequate to initiate a combustion wave can be deposited in high-gravity-oil reservoirs. These results are significant because there has been considerable doubt whether oils over 35° API gravity are able to deposit sufficient fuel. Considered in these studies were the effects of air flux, temperature, initial oil saturation, and time on carbon deposition. Conditions that maximized carbon deposition in the laboratory and an understanding of the nature of carbon formation are shown by graphical interpretation of the data. Statistical techniques were used to design and analyze the results of the retort tests. For the same amount of laboratory work, this approach yields more information about the systems that were studied than the classical method of research presently used in many laboratories. In addition, the accuracy of calculating the effect of each variable on carbon deposition is twice that of the classical approach. This paper develops the statistical approach to research without complex mathematics, thus enabling the reader to grasp the concept of how statistics can be applied to study many complicated problems.

Experiments were made with a batch reactor to determine the effect of gas pressures, temperature, and gamma radiation intensity on the reaction CO + Ch ? COC12. The equation, [dp = 0.0110 (1 - 0.01t) (PCOI)1/2 PC12] where [dP] is the change of pressure of phosgene with time (atm/hr), t is the temperature (°C), PCO and PC12 are the reactant pressures (atm), and I is the radiation intensity (r/hr), was found to best fit the data. Oxygen and a large ratio of reactor surface to volume retarded the reaction, but inert gases had no effect. A low-temperature reactor system is proposed to take advantage of the conditions which give a high reaction rate with gamma radiation and a simple scheme of product purification.

"INTRODUCTION In the course of the investigation of manganese mineral occurrences in continental United States, the Bureau of Mines has collected several lots of ore from properties in the vicinity of Long Valley, Ariz. The ore occurs as irregular and random pockets in a brecciated zone. As only high-grade portions of the deposits obtained by selective mining would be acceptable as commercial-grade manganese ores, an investigation was made to determine amenability of the ores to concentration by ore-dressing methods. Several types of ores, differing in grade and mineral associations, were studied.Ores from the Vaiazza property are of special interest, owing to the successful application of silica flotation for their concentration. Ores from the Shroup and Conner-Hough properties are very similar but differ somewhat in their response to ore-dressing Method's. In all instances, the man¬ganese minerals are psilomelane and pyrolusite, with minor amounts of other manganese oxides. The country rook is a brecciated limestone; the diluent in the high-grade ore pockets is chiefly silica. The low-grade manganese ores are limestone replacements, and the chief gangue material, of course, is limestone."

In 2006, 14,885 mining operations reported employment data to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Almost half (48.2%) were sand and gravel mines, followed by stone mines (30.7%), coal mines (14.2%), nonmetal mines (5.0%), and metal mines (1.9%).

The Bureau of Mines investigated hydrometallurgical procedures for concentrating precious metals from a mechanically processed metal fraction of obsolete military electronic scrap. Feed material for the leaching procedures described in this report was the high-tension-separated metal concentrate obtained as a fraction from mechanically processing partially stripped electronic units. Initial pretreatment with a 20-wt-pct-NaOH solution solubilized most of the aluminum. After washing, the resulting residue was incinerated to destroy any organics attached to metal particles. The incinerated residue was leached with 20-vol-pct H2S04 solution using two methods, countercurrent pressure and ultrasonic-aided leaching to solubilize the base metals, predominantly copper. Silver was recovered from the base metal leach residue using 50-vol-pct HN03, and gold contaminated with several percent palladium was recovered from the silver leach residue using aqua regia. The impure silver and gold plus palladium products represent about 1.5 wt pct of the high-tension-separated metal concentrate. Included is a three-step process evaluation study of mechanical processing of general electronic scrap and two hydrometallurgical procedures for leaching high-tension-separated metallic concentrates obtained from the mechanical processing step. Process evaluation concluded that only mechanical processing is economically viable.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes the research effort and results for a computer-assisted appendage control system of a Joy 14CM continuous mining machine. The cutter head (shear), gathering head, conveyor, and stabilizer jack are the appendages. Positional control of each appendage is accomplished by specifying the desired position to the appendage control computer, which uses appendage position sensor data. Appendage movement is actuated until the desired position is attained as determined by control algorithms. A description of the sensors, mechanical and electrical interfaces, data acquisition and control (DAC) system, experimental method to determine appendage response characteristics (range of motion, start and stop delay times, and movement rates), and their application to the position control loop algorithms are presented. Also, the test results for the shear in an unloaded (free space) and loaded (cutting) condition of the shear are presented.

"The O'Jack Mining Co.'s zinc and lead deposits in Jasper County, Missouri, have been worked intermittently since the early nineties; production from these deposits was greatest during World War I and II - 4,668 tons of zinc and lead concentrates. The deposits are in a sink-hole structure in which intense deformation has taken place and in areas of disturbance in the sheet-ground horizon.While high-grade ore was being mined, the operators sank seven churn-drill holes for the purpose of extending reserves. They then asked the Bureau of Mines to explore the deposit with the object of developing a reserve of lower-grade ore that could be mined by open-pit methods. Twenty-two holes were sunk. The methods of drilling and sampling and the logs of the holes, as of those drilled by the operators, are given later in this report.INTRODUCTION AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mined has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Literature was searched and cases of alleged water well damage were investigated. Occurrence of ground water in Appalachia is primarily in low yield, fractured, water table aquifers. Four test sites were chosen based on geographic and geologic diversity. Test wells were drilled at each site and base line data on water quality, static water level, and drawdown characteristics were obtained before surface mining commenced. Blast induced ground vibrations were measured at the surface by the wells at levels up to 5.44 inches per second maximum resultant particle velocity. Measurements made at the bottom wells indicated that vibrations were considerably attenuated at depths of 140 to 160 feet. No direct evidence of change in water quality or well performance was produced by blast vibrations, but removal of downslope support by excavation does cause lateral stress relief which permits the water-bearing fractures to become more open. This additional storage capacity causes the static water level to drop and for well-bore permeability to improve. Static water level recovers if sufficient recharge is available and well performance is improved.

This study presents the results of core-log analyses from the exploration boreholes, the analyses of face advance rates, and the results of downhole monitoring studies performed in gob gas ventholes for calculation of changes in hydraulic properties in the longwall overburden at a mine site in southwestern (SW) Pennsylvania section of Northern Appalachian Basin. In the ?rst part of the study, coal measure rocks in overburden strata were analyzed and the locations where possible fractures and bedding plane separations would occur were evaluated. In the second part, the hydraulic conductivities were computed by two different slug test analyses methods using the water level changes measured in gob gas ventholes as longwall face approached. Hydraulic conductivities were analyzed with respect to the changes in overburden depth, the locations of the borehole, and mine face advance rates. These data were used to interpret the potential productivities of the gob gas ventholes as a result of fracturing and changes in hydraulic conductivities. The general results showed that the probability of fracturing and bedding plane separations in the overburden increase between strong and weak rock interfaces. Also, the probability of bedding plane separations increases as the interface is close to the extracted coal seam. Evaluation of slug tests showed that the hydraulic conductivity developments in the boreholes and their potential production performances are affected by the underground strata and the roof materials. In situations where the roof material is stiff and thick, the development of high permeability fractures around the borehole will be less. Results also indicated that borehole location with respect to face position affects the fracturing time and permeability evolution as well. Greater overburden depths generally cause earlier fracturing as longwall face approaches, but eventually result in lower hydraulic conductivities and potentially less effective boreholes. Increasing mining rates also resulted in generally lower hydraulic conductivities in the overburden. The results of this study were intended to improve the interpretation of gob gas venthole performance and to provide better siting of these boreholes.

The Federal Bureau of Mines is publishing a series of studies on the methods and costs of mining uranium on the Colorado Plateau. This report describes the longwall-mining methods and techniques used at the Radon mine, Big Indian district, San Juan County, Utah. The tabular Radon ore body lies on the southwest flank of the Lisbon Valley anticline, strikes N. 10° W., dips 7° SW., and has an average thickness of 4-1/2 to 5 ft. The mine is developed by a three-compartment vertical shaft, a haulage level driven beneath the ore, and a system of drifts driven within and parallel to the strike of the ore.

"In the study of ball-mill grinding at the Intermountain Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines at Salt Lake City, Utah, it was desirable to measure the work input to a ball mill at the mill itself so that consideration of motor efficiency and transmission losses would be eliminated.The device adopted is essentially that used by Prof. H. E. T. Haultain4 in measuring work input to rolls. The mechanism was changed only so as to adapt it to a ball mill.Figure 1 is a diagrammatic sketch of the apparatus.The pulley which rotates the mill is loose on the mill shaft and is equipped with ball bearings. This pulley is connected by means of three tangential springs to the driving plate, which is solid on the mill shaft. Power applied to the loose pulley is transmitted to the driving plate, and hence to the mill, by the three springs; the greater the resistance of the mill, the greater the spring extension. The extension of the springs is transmitted by the steel extension tape to the differential integrating meter.The integrating meter is operated by two friction wheels in contact with the integrator disk which revolves at a definite ratio of speed to that of the mill. The friction wheels are held in contact with the disk by the spring suspension of the integrator and are connected to a differential gear cage, the revolutions of which are recorded on a counter such as is used in gas meters. Due to the differential gears the c e is stationary when the two friction wheels revolve at the same speed in opposite directions; this condition exists when the integrator is centered on the disk and corresponds to no load or to a zero spring extension. As the lead is applied, the springs extend and move the integrator from the center or zero point, resulting in a difference of speed between the two friction wheels. Due to the revolution of the differential cage this change in. speed is transmitted to the counter. The integrator and extension tape system is kept taut by means of a light spring attached to the integrator, the spring having just enough tension to assure that the integrator returns to zero when the load becomes zero."

The Petrographic Section of the Bureau of Mines, Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory, Albany, Oreg., annually examines thousands of minerals and rocks. Samples are received from mining, engineers, prospectors, and government agencies, both State and Federal. During the past 2 years certain uncommon minerals have been identified in the samples submitted. Eleven occurrences have been selected for reporting in detail. These selections were made because in most cases a new locality is involved. The data reported are the result of application of the latest techniques, and widely disseminated references concerning each mineral have been added for completeness. Several occurrences have been described by other investigators; in those cases new data have been supplied to supplement the already published information on these occurrences. No uranium-bearing minerals have been included; they will be treated in another paper. The Bureau of Mines does not make chemical analyses or assays for individuals or firms In direct competition with private laboratories. Mineral¬ogical examinations, however, are made for prospectors and the general public. Such examinations a call surface to determine whether the sample in question has possible commercial value. If it has apparent value, the sender is so informed, and suggestions as to its .Arc, development and marketing are offered. The latest scientific apparatus is available to aid in identification. The apparatus includes microscopes, both wide-field and polarizing, a Bunsen-type spectroscope for visual observation of the Zinc and band spectra of many elements, differential thermal apparatus for the examination of hydrous material, apparatus for cutting and mounting either thin sections for study in transmitted or polished surfaces for reflected-light studies, and a high-intensity magnetic separator for concentrating minerals according to their magnetic susceptibility. Also, available, but not an integral part of the Section, are several laboratory-type Geiger counters, a grating spectrograph, and X-ray diffraction apparatus. If need be, all of these tools may be employed to identify a mineral or rock.

Benzene and toluene are the first two members of an important homologous series whose general formula is CnH2n-6. The members of this series differ in composition from benzene by some integral multiple of CH2; they can all be prepared in the laboratory by the Wurtz-Fittig, Friedel-Crafts and Grignard syntheses. Because 'of the industrial importance of these-hydrocarbons, the limits of flammability of eight members of the series have been determined at 100° C.-(A temperature of 1000 C. was chosen because the determination of the upper limit of flammability of p-cymene requires an apparatus temperature. of at least 90° C. As elevated temperature data are available for other combustibles at 100° C. but not at 90° C., all data were taken at 100° C. in order to obtain comparable results.) Minimum ignition temperatures of these combustibles have been determined at laboratory-pressures.

"This paper presents an analysis of fracture mechanisms in coal subjected to bi-axial state of stresses, indentation of laterally confined coal specimen. Coal specimens were loaded to failure by the straight wedge indenters at various lateral confinement pressures. Strain distribution and acoustic emission characteristics of coal specimens under stress were recorded. The influence lines of vertical forces acting on the horizontal straight boundary of the coal specimen for each type of wedge indenter have been established using holographic interferometry technique. The effects of wedge indenter angle, confinement pressure, and coal anisotropy on fracture types, failure modes, and post-failure conditions were studied. The results indicated that combined application of holographic interferometry and acoustic emission monitoring techniques is not only suitable ·for studying deformability of heterogeneous and microscopically discontinuous material under stress but it also enhances the mode of fracture during the post failure stage. INTRODUCTIONOne of the relevant processes in the coal cutting technology is the application of indentation theories. Since most cutting tools in the coal industry are wedge shaped most of the indentation research is found for a wedge shaped tool.A wide range of behavior is found in different rocks subjected to the wedge penetration. A rock which is elastic brittle at standard pressure might become elastic plastic at high confining pressure (Gnirk and Cheatham, 1963). It was also observed that some rocks will merely be crushed and indented by a wedge whereas others will crack and form chips, furthermore the existence or non-existence of chips depends mostly on the geometry of the indenter, type of rock and the depth of penetration (Evans and Murrel, 1958). However, coal cutting technology is mostly explained by models which use rigid wedge to penetrate into a brittle material in which both crushing and chipping will occur (Evans and Murrel, 1958, 1962)."

Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7516, Bibliography of Investment and Operating Costs for Chemical and Petroleum Plants, was published in October 1949 to aid in estimating investment and operating costs of processes for manufacturing synthetic liquid fuels. Development of such processes by the Bureau of Mines was authorized by Public Law 290, 78th Congress. This bibliography included references to and abstracts of publications appearing from. 1930 to September 1948 on all processes in general use in the petroleum refining and chemical industries. Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7705, Supplemental Bibliography on Investment and Operating Costs for Chemical and Petroleum Plants, was prepared to cover the area from September 1948 through June 1952.

This report describes the sinking of No. 3 shaft at the Westvaco mine. It is one of a series of publications of the Bureau of Mines on mining methods and practices in the United States. The Westvaco mine is in Sweetwater County, Wyo., approximately 23 miles northwest of the town of Green River (fig. I), There are no permanent habitations in the vicinity of the mine, and employees live in Green River or Rock Springs, Wyo., 14 miles us t of Green River. The mine plant is on a windswept, treeless plain, from which low buttes and flat-topped ridges rise. The altitude at the collar of No. 3 shaft is 6,351 feet. The climate is arid, with temperatures as low as 40° below zero in the winter. Blacks Fork, a tributary of the Green River and a perennial stream, flows near the mine.

"INTRODUCTION In the course of a general investigation of mines and mineral deposits in the Upper Mississippi lead and zinc field, attention of the Bureau of Mines was first directed to the Coker mines area by the presence of large tonnages of old mill tailings containing economically recoverable percentages of lead and zinc. Later, the results of extensive geologic studies of the area were presented to the Bureau of Mines by the Federal Geological Survey, directing attention to the possibility of extending the known ore limits of the area to the north and northeast of the old Coker No. 1 mine workings.With this end in view, the Bureau of Mines undertook a program of churn drilling and sampling. This report describes the work done and presents the data obtained during the period of the Bureau of Mines investigation.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. [Microscopic methods have proved to be valuable assets in the study of low-grade ores. While the chemical assay u a ally discloses tine total content of valuable metals in such an ore, a thorough knowledge of the nature of the ore should form the from which to prepare an efficient means of recovery. In the treatment of low-grade ores, inefficient recovery, as indicated bay the amount of valuable mineral permitted to go to waste in the tailings, is too frequently the rule rather than the exception, As methods of recovery become more efficient, many low-grade 10 mineral A posits suddenly assume o commercial significance, In much of this material the minerals are so finely disseminated and intermixed that identification even by microscopic methods is a difficult matter. The application of microchemical qualitative analysis with the aid of new device described in this paper, will solve many of the problems of identification encountered in the study of low-grade potential ores. In these ores, especially, the limitations of ordinary microscopic methods are liable to become very great. The microchemical tests obtained by applying a standard set of reagents to a polished knoting whether or not a tarnishing action develops, have considerable value but arc far from being infallible. It is well-known that electrolytic effects are apt to affect seriously the diagnostic value of the tests, end this effect is encountered much more frequently in dealing with finely desseminated minerals. resort to microchemical qualitative analysis, therefore, becomes indispensable.]
