Preliminary studies showed that direct hydrolysis of H2SiF6 to SiO2 and HF at elevated temperatures was subject to many mechanical difficulties, and that corrosion of construction materials was a serious problem. Elimination of SiO2 from the HF product was generally poor. An alternative procedure, hydrolysis of lime-neutralized H2SiF6 by steam at 950° to 1,100° C, yielded a product very low in SiO2. Condensates containing up to 300 g/1 HF were prepared.

In conjunction with pilot steamflood tests in the Venango sands of Warren and Venango Counties, Pa., the Marx and Langenheim (4)3 calculations were adapted and programed for digital computer solution to predict test performance. The Monte Carlo technique was incorporated in the calculations to provide values of several variables which could not be adequately defined from available information. The computation methods are explained and the FORTRAN IV program listing is presented. Data and results of the prediction calculations for Venango oil sands are also shown.

Brown iron ore resources in Barbour , Butler , Crenshaw , and Pike Counties were investigated in a drilling program and geological study by the Federal Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Alabama Geological Survey and the University of Alabama . The aggregate footage drilled was 18,010 linear feet . When developed , reserves of 12,664,000 long tons of crude ore were indicated , containing from 26.9 to 29.0 percent iron and 0.2 to 1.6 percent manganese under a maximum overburden of 40 feet . Total inferred crude ore for the four counties was calculated to be 827,700,000 long tons . Beneficiation of samples by simulated log washing and use of a 1 / 8 - inch screen yielded from 46.8 to 51.7 percent iron and 0.2 to 2.6 percent manganese . Screen- test studies indicated no appreciable interlocking between the iron and manganese minerals and the waste particles of materials retained on a 200 - mesh screen . Clay was prominent in micron - size slimes . Silica was deleterious in the minus 20 - mesh size . While an indicated 2,198,000 dry long tons of usable iron ore can be recovered , sink - and - float tests show that it may be possible for 4,654,000 dry long tons to be recovered by other than log washing . However , applicable commercial processes have not been demonstrated .

This report documents the work performed by Battelle-Northwest and its sub-contractors in Phase I of a project to develop a cross pit conveyor system for the Bureau of Mines. The conveyor system description includes details of the conceptual design as well as system and component specifications. The selection of primary and back-up sites for system demonstration is discussed. Maneuvers and operating sequences required for mining the selected demonstration site are described and illustrated in detail. Economic viability of the cross pit conveyor system was analyzed by estimating the cost of overburden removal per ton of coal using the Battelle-designed concept and comparing these costs to the cost of an available state-of-the-art 30-yd3 dragline operation. Testing and trade-off studies conducted are documented and the results presented. Alternate designs considered in developing the selected cross pit concept are included for completeness. Based on the evaluation of the selected concept, it was concluded that the cross pit conveyor system proposed by Battelle is a technically and economically feasible overburden handling method with a good potential to improve western coal mining efficiency.

Physiol. 13): L165-Ll 70, 1995.-Infiammation and fibrosis subsequent to the inhalation of certain mineral dust particles has been suggested to result from the activation of eicosanoid synthesis by the alveolar macrophage (AM). To determine if surfactant modifies dust-induced generation of eicosanoids by the AM, we evaluated the effect of the surfactant lipid dipalmitoyl lecithin (DPL) on the production of eicosanoids by rat AM exposed to respirable silica dust in vitro. During the first 24-h exposure period, DPL alone significantly increased basal production of eicosanoids but completely inhibited silica-induced thromboxane A2 synthesis. In contrast, leukotriene B4 (LTB4 ) production was only partially reduced by DPL. During a second 24-h exposure period, LTB4 production in response to the highest dose of silica remained significantly elevated in the presence of DPL. Similar results were obtained when the surfactant preparation Survanta was evaluated. These results suggest that 1 ) DPL and Survanta independently activate AM eicosanoid production, 2) DPL and Survanta modulate the response of the AM to silica dust, and 3) L TB4 may be the most important eicosanoid mediator of the long-term effects of silica dust exposure on lung pathophysiology. THE OXYGENATED METABOLITES of arachidonic acid (AA) (here collectively termed eicosanoids) have been implicated as important regulators of lung physiology and are thought to be involved in pathophysiological sequelae such as acute respiratory distress syndrome, asthma, and the pulmonary complications of sepsis (20). This role is manifested through both direct effects on lung physiology as well as through an indirect modulatory effect on the release of other mediators of lung injury, in particular profibrotic cytokines such as the interleukins and tumor necrosis factor (15). Recently, exaggerated eicosanoid production by both the alveolar macrophage (AM) and the type II epithelial cell has been demonstrated to result from the exposure of these cells to several particulates, including crystalline silica (quartz) dust (5, 9, 17). These observations have led to the suggestion that eicosanoids play a major role in the etiology of pneumoconioses.Another secretory component of the pulmonary environment, surfactant, has been shown to modulate crucial AM functions, such as bactericidal activity and the recruitment of circulating immune cells (25). Indeed, an important feature of the lung's reaction to inhaled mineral dust is an increase in surfactant production, perhaps as a compensatory or protective response (1, 16). In addition, the alteration of the surface properties of mineral dust by surfactant or its components has been shown to influence the biochemical response of the AM to the dust, perhaps by altering the surface charge of the dust particle (11, 29, 32). And recently, Wallace et al. (28) have shown that the coating of mineral dust with surfactant, and its subsequent removal by lysosomal phospholipase, unmasks differences in dust cytotoxicity that are not apparent when AM are exposed to uncoated dust. Thus it appears that the inclusion of surfactant in in vitro exposure studies may be important in evaluating both the absolute levels of eicosanoid production by the normal and dust-exposed AM and the temporal relationship between dust exposure and the production of inflammatory mediators by the AM. Therefore, we characterized the effects of the surfactants dipalmitoyl lecithin (DPL; the primary lipid component of natural surfactant) and Survanta (a commercially available surfactant derived from bovine lung) on basal and silica-induced AM eicosanoid production during two 24-h periods after exposure to dust particles to both allow the enzymatic removal of surfactant from the particle surface and evaluate the k"

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting an ongoing research project to better understand the phenomena involved within electric arcs utilized in electric furnace steelmaking. With a better understanding of the physical and electrical characteristics involved, dynamic or predictive control of electric arc furnaces may be possible. A mathematical model is presented, but not solved, and the system of coupled equations is analyzed. Characteristic parameters are used to determine relative importance. In this manner, significant quantities are dermed. The parameters found to contribute little to the system of equations of motion are ignored. A resultant simplified system is identified, and directions for further study are indicated toward control of electric arc furnaces.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated tthhee feasibility of substituting platinum- coated metals for bulk platinum shapes as a means for conserving platinum . Platinum coatings were prepared using four different methods of electrodeposition , then tested and evaluated . In order for platinum coatings to be useful in process environments , they must be thick , adherent , stress - free , and pore - free . The Bureau evaluated direct - current , current reversal , cathode shielding , and pulsed- current plating techniques for producing a pore-free platinum electrodeposit from a molten cyanide bath . Aqueous corrosion tests of Fe - 10Cr substrates coated with approximately 25 μm of platinum showed that pulse plating yielded the most corrosion- resistant and , hence , the most pore -free coatings . The morphology of coating cross sections was in all cases columnar . The average grain size of pulse -plated deposits was independent of thickness , while all other plating techniques produced grains that increased in size as the coatings became thicker . It is believed that the constant grain size in the pulse - plated deposits resulted from better mass transport during the electrodeposition .

The Aluminum Co. of America raised its 99.5 percent unalloyed aluminum ingot selling price in March by 34 to 514 per pound. Other producers, including Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp. , Anaconda Aluminum Co. , and Reynolds Metals Co., followed Alcoa's lead, raising their quotes to 51$. In late March, domestic merchants quoted ingot at levels ranging between 49.56 and 50.50 per pound. BISMUTH: Several domes tic dealers lowered their bismuth prices in recent weeks by 50t-606 to within a range of $5.60-$5.75 per pound; producers continue to hold published prices at $7.50.

This report contains results of two major efforts related to electrical transients on mine electrical power systems. The first area concerns the use of digital computers to model mine electrical power systems and predict transients or duplicate field recordings of transients. Two existing general purpose circuit analysis programs were used. The first was the TRW Engineering System Simulator or TESS. The second was Electronic Circuit Analysis Program or ECAP. TESS proved to be superior to ECAP in several important characteristics, including system size limitations and modeling nonlinear elements. The second major topic covered in this report is the evaluation of commercially available surge suppression devices. These devices were found to be quite acceptable and guidelines for the selection and placement of surge suppressors were included. The final important item is a listing of the worst-case transients, from a design point of view, for ac and de utilization systems and ac distribution systems.

Preventive maintenance practices are listed in the manufacturers' instruction books. In general, equipment that requires frequent and extensive preventive maintenance is generally the most costly. The manpower spent on these frequent trips to remote areas is such that it is usually better to invest in a more costly system which requires little preventive maintenance. The best preventive maintenance for the system is a good installation. 7.2 Preventive Maintenance and Inspections With any system, periodic inspection is required because of the corrosive atmosphere and adverse conditions that exist in underground mines. These inspections can spot potential trouble in the system. Repair or replacement at that time averts the possibility of losing effectiveness of all or part of the system. 7.2.1 Cables Approximately once per month all cables in the communications system should be inspected for kinking, chafing, cracking, wear, stretching, or other signs of physical abuse. Particular attention should be paid to cable glands at the entry or exit points to the various units in the system, where the cable goes around sharp corners, in the vicinity of holding cleats which may be clamping the cable too tightly causing potential damage, and across the areas where the cable is exposed to physical damage from outside sources, such as equipment or falling objects. If a cable is damaged, it should be replaced as soon as possible. It is mandatory that the ground leads and connections to carrier current phones be thoroughly inspected and maintained in good condition, since considerable hazard may exist to the operator or equipment if a ground connection is broken. 7.2.2 Pager Phones The most readily available test set to determine if a pager telephone is operating correctly is the pager phone itself. The following physical check of the system can be performed at any phone station. 7.2.2a Listen Circuit Remove the handset from its cradle and listen to determine if the circuit is functional, as indicated by the presence of noise or conversation on the line. If no noise or voice signals are present at the handset receiver, take the following corrective action: 1. Operate the handset press-to-talk switch several times. Any corrosion on the contacts of this switch may cause a receiver to be temporarily inoperative. Repeated operation may clear the condition. 2. Open the cabinet and see if the battery cables are properly connected and are making firm contact. Check the handset cable and its connections in the cabinet of the pager phone, and see if there is any evidence of a break in the cable, corroded contacts, or poor connections. 3. Remove the handset receiver earpiece by unscrewing it counterclockwise (to the left), and remove the receiver from the socket. Examine the handset cavity; in some units, a patch of cotton batting or floss is used as a barrier to reduce acoustic feedback in the handset. If the cotton patch has absorbed moisture, remove it and replace with a crumpled ball of soft rubber, stuffed just far enough into the handset so it will not touch the receiver or switch terminals. 7.2.2b Page Circuit and Talk Circuit Push the page switch, squeeze the handset press-to-talk switch, and call any other phone. In this Bureau of Mines study, sealants containing mineral wool, cement, etc, were sprayed through dry-process equipment that propels dry material pneumatically to the water-adding nozzle. Advantages over slurry applications include no mixing, no extensive cleanup, and freedom from hardened cement in equipment should power be lost. Sealants with large mineral wool nodules (>l-inch) were sprayable at rates to 900 square feet per hour for 1/2-inch thickness with little dust and smooth material flow through equipment, but they were weak for mine use, Materials containing small wool nodules (1/4-inch) were stronger but tended to plug lines because the nodules were inadequately separated in the shredder. Increasing the dedusting oil also increased line plugging by holding the nodules together in larger lumps. Best results were obtained using a 3/4-inch-nodule wool with cement binder, which provided both smooth flow through the machine and adequate strength.

Data on 18 grade-80, 20 grade-91/98, 20 grade-100/130, and 9 grade-115/145 aviation fuels are presented. These gasolines represent July 1947 production.

The Bureau of Mines has been developing and evaluating methods for beneficiating the large deposits of nonmagnetic (oxidized) taconite located on the western Mesabi Range. In this segment of the research, a sample representing about 0.5 billion tons of nonmagnetic taconite from near Grand Rapids, Minn., was beneficiated using a reduction roasting, magnetic separation, flotation process. The sample contained 32.1 pct iron and 49.1 pct silica. Tests were conducted both on a bench scale and with a 1,000-lb/h pilot plant. In the bench-scale research a con-centrate containing 69.0 pct iron and 4.5 pct silica was produced with an iron recovery of 82.1 pct. In the pilot plant, reduction roasting was conducted in a 35-ft kiln using lignite as the reductant and major source of fuel. Dust from the kiln exhaust was pelletized and recycled to the kiln. The roasted taconite was beneficiated by magnetic sep-aration and flotation to produce a product containing 67.9 pct iron, 5.5 pct silica, and 69.7 pct of the iron in the kiln feed. The cyclone separation in the grinding circuit was sharpened by demagnetizing the cyclone feed in a 400-Hz, 1,000-Oe magnetic field.

A numerical method is presented to calculate the isopressure (isobar) lines and streamlines for an oilfield from the pressure distribution. A knowledge of these lines is useful in the study of the flow of fluids in underground reservoirs, especially for those containing gaseous and/or liquid hydrocarbons. This work was done primarily to enable determination of the shape factors needed in the calculation of petroleum reservoir performance. However, it has application for the flow of water in aquifers, or electricity or heat in odd-shaped geometry. Techniques previously developed were used to calculate the pressure distribution. From this pressure distribution, the isopressure lines were calculated accurately by the method presented in this paper. Then by successively projecting orthogonal lines from one isopressure line to another, the streamlines are determined. From the coordinates of the isopressures and the streamlines, the shape factors can then be determined by a published method. Computer methods are presented to calculate the streamlines and isopressures for any well-spacing pattern existing within a field with multiple wells. The method reproduces the flow net for several well configurations having extensive geometrical variations. Such information provides the petroleum engineer with data from which he can compute oil recoveries for different patterns and thereby maximize the recovery of hydrocarbons from the reservoir.

This report summarizes the work accomplished under Bureau of Mines contract H0188068. The contract required design and construction of a high voltage (7.5 KV) explosion proof cable connector for use on underground coal mine drag cables. A connector was constructed with elastomeric phase insulators that provide insulation shielding throughout the connector length. Connector housing was made of flame resist-ant cast poly urethane with no exposed metal components. Electrical and mechanical testing of the completed coupler resulted in satisfactorily meeting most of the design testing requirements.

The purpose of this Bureau of Mines investigation was primarily to isolate and examine the effect of liquid content upon the apparent porosity and bulk density of compacts pressed from high-purity, fused aluminum oxide, and, secondarily, to study the actual mechanism by which the liquid content affects the bulk density. No attempt was made to approach the theoretical maximum density of the oxide by introducing additives, particle packings, or similar variables; instead this study is an intercomparison of the bulk densities obtained as functions of the water contents of the compacting mixtures. Water content was varied from 7 percent to 25 percent, on a total-weight basis. The data gathered indicated a well-defined optimum water content for obtaining minimum apparent porosity and maximum bulk density, under the conditions of the experiment. During the course of this study, a number of additional variables in the forming process were discovered and are introduced in this report, although a thorough evaluation was found to be beyond the scope of this present investigation.
