In the absence of values for each influencing parameter and a known relationship of input-output space, novel approaches should be implemented as proxy solutions to mathematically complicated problems. Proxy solutions can be in the form of linear or non-linear multiple regression equations. Predicting the performance of gob gas ventholes is one of these mathematically complicated problems as it is difficult to know the exact relationships between various parameters influencing gob gas venthole (GGV) performance from active and sealed (completed) longwall panels. In this paper, a discussion of the NIOSH-developed software suite for methane control and prediction (MCP) based on an artificial neural network (ANN) is presented. The application of the ANN-based software suite to develop algebraic relationships for gob gas venthole performance prediction in sealed and active longwall panels is sought. Output information obtained from the NIOSH-MCP software as a response to various input parameters were used to create an input-output database for total flow and methane percentage from GGVs operating in active mines during completed and sealed panel situations. Due to the multi-variable nature of the software, outputs generated using the software for various inputs were used to develop analytical equations first using linear and then second using non-linear multivariable regression techniques. The advantage of this method is its ability to better understand the significant parameters of the relationships between the inputs and outputs for gob gas venthole production in active and sealed panels and to be able to predict their performances using relatively simple analytical functions.

"The recovery or partial recovery of the oil remaining in oil sands after the usual methods of production have become unprofitable is perhaps the greatest problem in the petroleum industry today. The amount of this oil remaining in the sand is variously estimated by those familiar with the subject to be 25 to 90 per cent of the original content.2Lewis3 states, ""The estimate of 80 to 90 per cent of the oil left underground does not seem incredible.""It is estimated by the writer that approximately 91 per cent of the oil originally held in the Elliott pool, was still in the formation on January 1, 1924, and that it would take at least 12 years, at the 1923 rate of production, to further reduce this quantity by one per cent of the original content.The progress made in the oil industry during the past few years relative to the prevention of evaporation losses; to improvement in cracking processes, whereby the gasoline yield from many crudes has been doubled and trebled; to the increased recovery of gasoline from natural gas; and many other developments, remarkable as they are, can be applied only to that comparatively small portion of petroleum products which are raised to the surface. A device or process which would cut development costs to one-half would probably result in a much smaller profit to the oil industry, than the profit derived from an additional 10 per cent recovery of the total amount of oil in a pool. Various methods have been used and many others proposed, for the increase of oil recovery from normally depleted sands.In France, oil sands are being mined by means of shafts and galleries. In other places, notably the Bradford, Pennsylvania field, the yield has been increased by means of water flooding, wherein water is introduced into the sand to displace oil, and drive it to producing wells."

A new generation of hydraulic mine support prestressing devices has been developed. These thin-walled steel shells are machine-welded and can be inflated with water or any liquid to provide prestressing for a wide variety of roof support products ranging from Can supports to props and cable bolts. With an expansion capability of several inches, depending on the geometry and size of the unit, they can also establish roof contact eliminating the need for wooden wedges or crib blocks that are commonly employed with several standing roof support products. Capable of withstanding pressures from 1,000 to 6,000 psi, these cells are able to transfer roof loading into the support structure without rupturing. A recent development has been the addition of an inexpensive yield valve that provides control of the maximum pressure and load development on the support. This paper examines the performance capabilities of these inflatable prestressing units and the impact they have on the performance of various support systems, including an evaluation of the overall stiffness of the support system and the load control during yielding of the prestressing unit. Recommendations are made regarding the design requirements of the prestressing unit to optimize the support performance. A summary of mine applications using this technology is provided with general comments regarding their impact on ground control.

Ten proposed processes for the recovery of manganese from domestic resources as a high-grade oxide product are described. Nine of the processes employ sulfur dioxide, sulfuric acid, or a combination of both for leaching. The tenth process utilizes sulfur dioxide to sulfatize the ore at 600° to 850°C before water leaching. In addiction to these ten complete processes, six processes from the patent literature are described. Methods for receovering MnSO4?H2O are also reviewed.

A mineral survey of the 520-acre Quigg West Wilderness Study Area (MT-074-155) was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1986 at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The Wilderness Study Area is in Granite County in western Montana about 16 miles northwest of Phillipsburg and 27 mi les northeast of Hamilton, MT. Stony Mountain, a study area on lands administered by the U.S. Forest Service, is about 1 mile to the south-southwest and was studied concurrently. No mineral resources were identified in the Quigg West Wilderness Study Area, but high grade gold assays, as much as 1.24 ounce gold per ton, were obtained at the one prospect found. Samples from four workings contained significant gold; minor silver, molybdenum, and copper were also present. The prospect containing the narrow and discontinuous gold-bearing quartz vein straddles the south boundary of the Wilderness Study Area. The shear zone containing the vein projects toward the old Crescent mine, about 4.5 miles to the south, which shows a similar geologic structure.

It is apparent that coal will play an increasingly important role in satisfying the nation's energy requirements for the remainder of this century. Both deep mining and surface mining will be practiced to develop known U.S. coal reserves, but until significant improvements in the productivity of deep mining emerge, surface mining is likely to be predominant. This report addresses the problems of coal extraction and surface mine reclamation in the 11-state Midwestern coal resource region, where surface stripping of high-sulfur, bituminous coal has been a well-developed industry for most of this century. Midwestern coal markets have declined in recent years. In part this is a result of widespread conversions to more convenient and (apparently) economical liquid and gaseous fuels, but the decline in Midwestern coal use is also attributable to the impact of current air pollution control regulations that prohibit emissions of sulfur oxides and particulate matter. A part of the regional demand for Midwestern coal has been transferred to the Northern Great Plains where extensive low-sulfur coal reserves are currently being developed.

Long-haul dump (LHD) vehicles used in underground mining are known to expose workers to important levels of whole-body vibration1. These vehicles are generally designed without suspension and may be categorized as small or large LHDs depending on whether their respective load capacities are lower or larger than 3.5 cubic yards. While the majority of older vehicles are equipped with a rigid or unsuspended seat, more recent LHDs often incorporate a suspension seat. The objective of this study was to define the vibration spectral characteristics of most commonly encountered large and small LHD vehicles operating in mining operations. This was done in an effort to categorize the vehicles in terms of vibration spectral classes to be reproduced on a laboratory whole-body vibration simulator to assess the vibration attenuation performance of a typical LHD suspension seat. Methods Vertical vibration measured at the seat attachment point of 8 small and 8 large LHD vehicles operating underground in typical mining operations under loaded and unloaded conditions was considered as the basis for defining the spectral classes. By regrouping the data collected for each LHD vehicle size and load condition, the overall distribution of acceleration power spectral density (PSD) of measured floor vibration was determined over the 0.5 to 20 Hz frequency range. Mean and envelopes of maximum and minimum values of PSD spectra were computed to define the spectral classes, along with the corresponding values of frequency weighted rms acceleration determined in accordance to the ISO 2631-1 standard2. These spectra were further used to calculate the displacements needed to drive a whole-body vibration simulator consisting of a platform supported by two servo-hydraulic actuators having a total stroke of ±100 mm. For validation purposes, the vibration acceleration spectra measured on the simulator were compared with the target spectra representing the spectral classes. Finally, the vibration transmissibility characteristics of a typical suspension seat were determined under sine sweep excitation using both a rigid mass load and a human subject having a mass of 62 kg and 85 kg, respectively. The SEAT value, representing the ratio of seat to base frequency-weighted rms acceleration, was further measured under each of the defined LHD vibration spectral classes by loading the seat with an 85 kg subject. Tests were repeated three times and the mean SEAT values were determined to assess the seat’s ability to reduce exposure to whole-body vibration in LHD vehicles. Results Three spectral classes applicable to both loaded and unloaded conditions were defined as shown in Figure 1: one for large and two for small LHDs. The influence of load on frequency-weighted rms acceleration was found to be negligible for large and Class I small LHDs, while a shift of the peak acceleration PSD to lower frequencies was noted for the loaded vehicles. IN 1942 the Bureau of Mines began to develop the Kroll process for use in the large-scale production of titanium. Titanium and titanium alloys are now commercial metals. These metals are relatively expensive, but It is now evident that they will have important industrial uses and that in many instances these will be related to their remarkable corrosion resistance. This bulletin presents the known corrosion properties of titanium and its alloys in useful form. In marine environments titanium is highly resistant to corrosion and does not pit, or undergo crevice corrosion, stress corrosion, or corrosion fatigue. Titanium is also highly resistant in many salt solutions, including most chlorides. It is very resistant to corrosion in nitric acid solutions. It is also resistant to white fuming nitric acid. However, it may react violently with red fuming nitric acid. In phosphoric acid solutions titanium has rela¬tively good resistance to corrosion, but it has less resistance to sulfuric acid and still less to hydrochloric acid solutions. Titanium corrodes very rapidly in hydrofluoric acid Solutions. It is very resistant to corrosion in many organic chemicals. However, it has only moderate resistance to formic acid solutions and poor resistance inn oxalic acid solutions. Titanium does not corrode in dichloroaretic acid but, corrodes rapidly in 100 percent trichloroacetic acid at 100° C. Titanium is resistant to barium, calcium, magnesium, ammonium, and sodium hydroxides. Titanium is inert in wet chlorine, bromine, or iodine gases. However, in dry chlorine gas titanium reacts rapidly enough to ignite. It also reacts rapidly with dry bromine gas, but, it is resistant to dry iodine gas. When titanium is exposed to red fuming nitric acid solutions with high nitrogen dioxide content and low water content, it corrodes, undergoes stress-corrosion cracking, and becomes pyrophoric. This occurs more readily with some titanium alleys, such as titanium-8 percent manganese. A fresh titanium surface immersed in water or in an aqueous solution and in contact with an oxygen-rich atmosphere under sufficientt pressure is unstable and will ignite spontaneously. Inherently an active metal, titanium has a tendency to become less active in environments containing oxidizing agents such as air, oxygen, chlorine, or ferric, cupric, or platinic ions. Titanium is more noble than most structural metals in roost, environments and its excellent corrosion resistance is generally not, affected by contact with these metals. However, some of the other metals corrode faster because of contact with titanium. Titanium undergoes anodic polarization readily, so that even when it is the less noble member of a galvanic couple it may corrode less because of the contact. Titanium alloys often have corrosion properties and electrochemical characteristics similar to those of commercially pure titanium. Titanium alloys containing noble metals, zirconium, molybdenum, vanadium, tantalum, or copper sometimes have better corrosion resistance than pure titanium.

A technique for use in underground coal mines measures the response times of machine-mounted methane monitors. This technique uses a calibration cup to deliver gas to the sensor head to measure response times. For comparison, in the current study, response times were measured by placing methane sensor heads in a specially designed test box where they were exposed to an atmosphere containing a constant concentration of methane. Response time readings measured in the test box were shorter than the readings obtained using the calibration cup. The response times measured in the test box were comparable for sensors from three different manufacturers. The effects of dust cap and flame arrestor design on response times were also evaluated using the test box.

With the ever increasing consumption of mineral commodities, the vital question is not whether sufficient mineral quantities will be available, but rather can the known existing low grade resources be mined economically. Conventional conveyor systems are being used in some open pit mines to decrease haulage costs. n an effort, to take this concept one stop further, this contract study examines the use of a high angle conveying system in an open pit mine. It identifies available high angle conveying equipment and examines the haulage and crushing costs associated with both a conventional truck and shovel mining operation and a high angle conveyor operation. These costs analyses were performed on a hypothetical copper, taconite and phosphate mine. Information was gathered from a series of high angle conveying equipment and open pit mining operations in the U.S. Volume I includes a detailed review of the state-of-the-art in high angle conveying concepts, the, hypothetical mine development, and the cost analyses. Volume II includes the appendices.

The presence of considerable mineralization at the surface together with other favorable conditions suggested inclusion of the Nigger Jim diggings area in a comprehensive study of shallow lead deposits in southwestern Wisconsin. The area, which was the site of considerable shallow development some 60 to 70 years ago, offered the possibility of substantial quantities of lead at near-surface horizons. The investigation included completion of 30 churn-drill holes totaling 1,808 feet of drilling, 2 diamond-drill holes totaling 164.5 feet of drilling, and 25 feet of test pitting in two excavations. The degree of mineralization was determined in an area l,500 feet long and 150 to 300 feet wide along a mineralized trend that has not been investigated beyond the limits of the zone drilled by the Bureau of Mines.

Diesel-powered equipment operating in a gassy underground mine could conceivably ingest a methane-air mixture from the mine atmosphere that could cause the diesel engine to overspeed, or exceed its rated speed. Engine overspeed, particularly if extreme (engine runaway), could result in personal injury, a possible mine explosion, and/or catastrophic engine failure. In this report, the Bureau of Mines reviews the literature on the potential hazards of methane-induced diesel engine overspeed. Also included are the Bureau's findings from consultations with representatives of the diesel engine industry to determine the specific engine behavior that could he expected under the overspeed condition. The report summarizes data on mine accidents involving methane, discusses results of tests on the compression ignition of methane in diesel engines, and examines fuel governors and intake-air-cutoff devices, two kinds of devices used to prevent overspeed. Analysis of the information gathered suggests that the conditions necessary to cause a diesel engine to overspeed uncontrollably are not likely to occur, particularly if the engine is equipped with flame-proofing devices. The available literature and lack of actual overspeed case histories suggest that the safety devices currently in use are sufficient to prevent diesel engine overspeed.

In 1987 Wyoming became the largest coal producing state in the country. The state is known for its extensive coal resources and extremely thick coal seams. Wyoming's coal reserves total about 69.3 billion tons, or 14.2 percent of the U.S. coal reserve. Coal seams range generally from 10 to 80 feet in thickness, although one seam is 220 feet thick. The coal-bearing areas of Wyoming underlie approximately 41 percent of the state's total land area. Wyoming's coal ranges from lignite to high volatile bituminous. Most of the coal produced is subbituminous from the Powder River coal region near Gillette. The presence of coal in Wyoming was discovered before 1834 on the Belle Fourche River. The state's first mine opened in Carbon County in 1865, and with the completion of the trans- continental railroad, the demand for coal increased. Currently approximately 80 percent of Wyoming's coal production is shipped out-of-state to meet the growing demand for low- sulfur coal to fuel electric generating plants. Wyoming received conditional regulatory approval November 26, 1980. Its Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved February 14, 1983.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing clay mining, crushing and grinding methods, and costs, at various operations throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The, cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs may in many instances cause embarrassment to the individual operator as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulation shall ensue. The following report deals specifically with the methods employed by the Evans Pipe Co., Uhrichsville, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. In 1981 the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey conducted a mineral survey of the Pyramid RARE II area (No. 5023) covering 23,500 acres (9,500 ha) of E1 Dorado National Forest and 7,900 acres (3,200 ha) of the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (fig. 1). The Bureau of Mines investigation did not reveal mineral deposits in the area. Samples taken from silicified and limonite-stained metasedimentary rocks and aplite dikes were void of precious or base metals or uranium. Placer samples from stream gravels contained no gold values. Molybdenite occurs in quartz stringers within quartz monzonite near Grass Lake, adjacent to the area; no extension; were found in the area.

Research by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has pursued quartz analysis for the specialized ?lter assemblies of a new worker-wearable personal dust monitor (PDM). The PDM is a real-time instrument utilizing a tapered element oscillating microbalance (TEOM®). Standard ?berglass TEOM ?lters cannot accommodate the desired P-7 infrared analytical method used by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Novel ?lter materials were tested with the objective of demonstrating this type of analysis. Low temperature ashing and spectrometric examination were employed, revealing that nylon ?ber candidate ?lters left minimal residual ash and produced no signi?cant spectral interference. Avoiding titanium dioxide in all ?lter materials proved to be a key requirement. Fine quartz particulates were collected on prototype ?lters in a Marple chamber, either open-faced or through PDMs during test runs. The ?lters were then subjected to MSHA P-7 analysis and the spectrometrically based analytical results for quartz mass were compared to reference measurements. Also, PDM instrumental mass readings were compared to ?lter gravimetric measurements. Results suggest that the P-7 method is adaptable to variations in ?lter materials and that quartz dust analysis by the P-7 method when utilizing the new ashable PDM ?lters can have accuracy and precision within 10% and 4%, respectively. This is within the declared 13% accuracy and 7–10% precision of the P-7 method itself. Instrument mass readings had modest positive bias but met NIOSH accuracy criteria. Continued work with specialized PDM ?lters is merited, as they are a new type of TEOM sample amenable to ashing analysis of particulates.
