This study examines the surface alteration and flotation behaviour of synthetic moncheite, PtPd(BiTe)2, in the presence of pentlandite. The telluride minerals contribute around 20% ~ 30% and up to 45% of the PGM present in the Platreef ore and are considered to be slow floating as there is evidence of these minerals reporting to the tailings. It was proposed that oxidation products from other minerals and grinding media would affect the mineral surface composition and floatability thereby causing inadvertent depression of moncheite due to precipitating ions. ToF-SIMS analyses (time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry) was used to characterise the mineral surface as well as the extent of surface alteration. Microflotation was used to deter-mine the hydrophobicity of the synthetic minerals. Conditioning of moncheite in the presence of pentlandite reduced the flotation response of the + 38 -106µm size fraction from > 99% to 56%. This was due to pentlandite dissolution products (iron and nickel hydroxy species) which formed overlayers on the mineral surfaces thereby inhibiting the adsorption of collector. In addition, further grinding of these samples, with and without pentlandite conditioning showed a negative effect on recovery due to the fineness of the particle size distribution and there was no advantage gained from any possible exposure of fresh sites in the sample.

The research on selecting of an efficient technology of pyrite cinders complex treatment, sulfuric acid production wastes, have been made. The grades in the initial product were 2.04 g Au/t, 35.0 g Ag /t, 0.38%Cu, 1.1% Zn. Laboratory tests on cyanide technology, thiourea and sulphite leaching were carried out. Magnetic and flotation beneficiation and biohydrometallurgical technology were tested. After considering the results of the tests, the most economically efficient technology of pyrite cinders complex treatment with cyanide leaching of precious metals was determined. The technology involves water washing of soluble copper and zinc compounds, lime treatment and cyanide leaching of gold and silver, detoxification and utilization of mineral wastes. The precious metals are recovered from solutions by cementation onto zinc. Copper is recovered from rinse waters by SW/EW and then zinc is precipitated as hydroxide. All the solutions and organic agent are used in recirculation and therefore the technology is practically waste-free. Mineral wastes can be used as iron-containing materials for cement industry. The technology has been tested in pilot-plant scale under continuous operation with complete re-circulation of cyanide solutions. In this process recovery of 54% Au, 45% Ag, 30% Cu and 50% Zn has been achieved.

The slag produced in metallurgical smelting processes contains considerable amount of valuable metals. The present work focuses on recovery of copper value by froth flotation from the copper smelter slag. The slag samples are subjected to detailed characterization including automated quantitative mineralogy using Mineral Liberation Analyzer (MLA). The MLA results indicate that a part of copper is present in sulphide form in fayalite (iron-silicate) matrix and very poorly liberated. SEM-EDX analyses also reveal that a certain part of the copper is present within the fayalite (Fe-Ca-Si) matrix, perhaps either as lattice impurity or very fine grain. The copper smelter slag is ground in wet mode in a ball mill, to particle size distribution suitable for flotation. Subsequently, the slurry undergoes froth-flotation in lab-scale Denver-type flotation cell. Various combinations of sodium iso-propyl xanthate (SIPX) and alkyl hydroxamate collectors are used along with pine oil as frother. A multiple collector dosage is required for effective flotation of non-sulphide copper phases associated fayalite and alkyl hydroxamate is identified as one of the effective collector for non-sulphide minerals. The copper recovery can be enhanced by 7-10% with a combination of collectors as compared to conventional sulphide flotation using only xanthate type collectors. The status of utilization of copper ore resources, and the application and development of biohydrometallury technology in the world is reviewed. Based on the characterization of Zambia?s copper resources, biohydrometallurgy technology is shown to be a practical approach to extract and utilize the enormous low grade copper resource, such as ore tailings and low grade copper ore in this country. Through the cooperation of CSU, China and MMMD, Zambia, ?CNMC-CSU Demonstration Base of Biohydrometallurgy Technology in Zambia? was launched and several biohydrometallurgy plants are being constructed. This indicates that the biohdyrometallurgy technology would be applied soon in Zambia and in the whole Africa. Biohydrometallurgy technology stands as an efficient alternative to the traditional pyrometallurgy process and it can be the key to unlock mineral resources value. Cenospheres is a sandlike hollow sphere component of the fly ash that is collected in coal-burning electric power generating plants. Metal coated particles have been widely used in industries. Magnetron sputtering method which was used to coat copper film on the surface of the cenospheres is a widely used coating technique in large surface metal coating. A newly designed equipment is used to make the fine particle coating can be carried out because the fine particle is hard to disperse and it must make the particle keep moving to let every direction of the particle be coated. The copper film coated is compact, smooth, even and without uncoated spots under the optical microscopy and SEM. The film has good affinity to the cenosphere surface. The film does not separate with cenoshpere surface even when the cenosphere is crushed. The XRD, SEM, XPS, SPM was used to study the copper film characteristic. It is shown that using this newly designed magnetic sputtering equipment can coat high quality copper nanofilm on the cenoshpere surface.

Geometallurgy aids the understanding of ore body variability but has the most value if the data is easily available along the entire mining value chain. This requires cross-discipline communication and collaboration across traditional silos, and an organizational culture that encourages that to flourish. Data that are collected by the numerous groups (i.e. mining, geology, milling, processing, refining, smelting, marketing, environmental etc.) involved in the mining process may have relevance to other stakeholders; mineralogical and textural data for example has value to all these groups. Data required for modeling comminution or identifying acid potential from waste rock may already exist, however it needs to be made available to all the relevant stakeholders in the right format at the right time. As part of the GeM (AMIRA P843 & P843A) project the opportunity has been taken during the sponsor meetings, short courses, case studies etc. to ask the question: ‚What information do you want from further up the chain?? For example, to metallurgists ‚What information would you like from the geology group before the ore enters the mill?? The geology group may already have information important to mineral processing but not know it is of interest. This could, for example, be in the form of a geometallurgical drill core log that contains quantitative measured values. This paper focuses on the interaction between the mining, geology, mineral processing and environmental groups, using ore properties resulting from geological alteration to identify potential impacts throughout the mining process and discusses how a cross discipline approach can benefit all.

Coal preparation plants usually operate with water in a closed circuit mode. In this practice, large quantities of water is continuously being recycled. To compensate the natural losses, only small quantity of fresh make up water is added into the circuit. As a result, a gradual build up of residual concentrations of flotation reagents (frothers, collectors, coagulates etc.) take place in the water and the concentration levels of the contaminants increase. Besides, the recycled water accumulates higher amounts of total dissolved components (1600 ppm) and hardness (740 ppm) than the fresh water. Nearly 80 ? 85% of the process water used in a coal preparation plant is utilized in treating the coal fines in flotation circuit. The presence of certain alkali earth metal ions (e.g., Ca++, Mg++) may adversely affect the flotation performance as they precipitate sparingly soluble hydroxyl complexes on the coal surface and change its surface charge. These studies showed that the use of recycled water in flotation has a significant effect on the selectivity and kinetics of the flotation process because, the dissolved compounds, both inorganic and organic, alter the chemistry radically. By treating the recycled water through a softening process, the concentrations of alkali earth metals and hardness were reduced significantly. The concentration of alkali earth metals and hardness were reduced to 10 ppm and 35 ppm respectively in the softened recycle water. From the selectivity studies, it has been observed that the flotation yield and recoveries increased by four to seven units by softening the recycled water. The kinetic studies indicated that the clean coal particles followed first-order kinetics. The kinetic parameters namely, flotation rate constant (k) and maximum recoveries (R8) of flotation, were found higher with softened recycle water than the recycled water. This reduces the residence time in the flotation cell and thereby, increases its productivity. The Sarcheshmeh new concentration plant uses a 32 ft×16 ft constant speed (10.5 RPM) SAG mill with two 5500 hp motors which could rotate in two directions. The mill liners are chrome-molybdenum steel casting type with a Brinnell hardness between 325 and 375 with the lifter face angle of 14° and lifter height of 152 mm. The shell liner consists of 120 (two 60 rows) pieces with a High-High configuration in a rail design. A specially designed liner wear profile measuring device enabled fast and accurate measurements inside the mill during the mill shut-down periods. The measurements indicated that the liner wear profile along the liner length is non-uniform and the highest wear occurs between 1.25m and 2.75m of the mill length. The average weight of liners at the time of removal was 47% of the original weight indicating a significant metal loss. The modification of liner shape was undertaken with the aim of having a uniform profile at the liner removal time. The proposed liner unlike the pervious type did not have a uniform shape with a lifter height of 187mm at the section where the wear rate was high. It was believed that this new profile could arrive at a uniform profile at the liner change out time. A study was also directed to the possible change of charge motion due to the liner profile modification. The dynamic behaviour of charge was investigated through the analysis of forces acting on a single ball using mill characteristics such as mill diameter, rotational speed, lifter height and release angle. The simulation of charge motion with this method and Milltraj TM software indicated that the impact position of charge will change only one degree due to the maximum increase of 35 mm in the lifter height. This assured that the installation of the modified liner would not have any adverse effect on the mill because of ball impacting the mill shell. It was predicated that the amount of scrap metal will reduce to 30% from the current value of 47% beside 1500 h increase in the liner life time.

Thiosulfate as an alternative lixiviant for gold has received much attention in recent years due to the growing environmental concerns over the use of cyanide. Cu(II) is used to catalyze the oxidation of gold and ammonia is to stabilize Cu(II) in alkaline solution. However, the presence of Cu(II) enhances the oxidative degradation of thiosulfate. The high consumption of reagents has made thiosulfate leaching uneconomical to date, in comparison with cyanide leaching. Therefore, further investigations are required to leaching under low reagent concentrations over extended periods where reagent consumption is low and gold leaching rate is low as well. It is thus necessary to find additives to enhance gold dissolution in the thiosulfate leaching system. Electrochemical studies using rotating gold disc showed that the oxidation of gold in ammoniacal thiosulfate solution increased significantly in the presence of a small amount of thiourea and the beneficial effect increased with an increase in the thiourea concentration up to 7.2 mM. Thiourea improved gold extraction in the thiosulfate leaching of gold from a sulfide ore under low reagent concentrations. Excessive addition of thiourea inhibited the leaching of the gold ore. The decomposition of thiosulfate was reduced with the presence of thiourea. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) results indicated that thiou-rea likely decomposed to sulfide and formed gold sulfide species at the gold surface.

To comprehensively utilize the valuable resource in tailings, increase the economic benefit of mine, reduce the amount of tailings, prolong the service life of tailing dam, the comprehensive utilization of tailing resource is arousing the attention of more and more mines. Research of comprehensive recovery of feldspar and silica from Cu-Mo floatation tailings has been furthered. Technology of "De-sliming-Magnetic Separation-Reverse Flotation-Feldspar and Silica Separation" has been developed to utilize the resource. Slime is removed and reagents cost is reduced by de-sliming. The specific effective collector ZL is used in gangues reverse flotation, and GZ-818 is the collector in feldspar and silica separation. The grinding operation is vital to ensure the liberation degree of feldspar and to eliminate the reagents pollution on minerals surface. To a Cu-Mo flotation tailing assaying K2O 5.22%, Na2O 2.22%, Fe2O3 1.95%, Al2O3 12.05%, SiO270.66%, superfine K-feldspar and silica concentrates can be produced. The feldspar concentrate productivity is 29.67% assaying K2O 8.99%, Na2O 2.86%, Fe2O3 0.16%, Al2O3 16.99% and SiO2 68.92%. The silica concentrate productivity is 14.20% assaying 0.17% K2O, 0.04% Na2O, 0.01% Fe2O3, 0.55% Al2O3 and 98.17% SiO2. The technology provides technological reference model for the similar mines.

"Tumbling mills are machine, operating in non-equilibrium, capable of applying forces on the ore contained within, causing the ore to break down. The action of the mill on the ore is very inefficient, producing a large quantity of heat. The inefficiencies of the mill drive the desire for improvement, spawning research and development activities. Given the non-equilibrium nature of the mill, the theory of Large Deviations is proposed as the framework that captures the state of the mill. The theory of Large Deviations allows for the determination of the rate function and the scaled cumulant generating function (SCGF), for systems in either equilibrium or non-equilibrium. Powerful connections can been made between familiar concepts of statistical physics and the concepts introduced by the theory of Large Deviations: entropy can be associated with the rate function; the scaled cumulant generating function with the free energy. It is shown that observables, compatible with Large Deviation theory, can be identified for the tumbling mill. Here, the time series of the energy associated with an element of the charge is such an observable. Furthermore, using some experimental data, it is shown that the time series of the energy can define a rate function, thereby describing the system within the Large Deviation framework. Finally, a discussion of the results is given, particularly how this theory can be further developed for tumbling mills."

Vanadium ore is widely distributed in black rock series (Fan, Zhang and Ye, 2004) in many provinces of China, which accounts for 87% (Zuo, Peng and Dugang, 2001) of vanadium reserves in China. In Cambrian black rock series in south Qinling Mountain, there are large or medium-sized sedimentary deposits such as Zhongcun vanadium deposit, Yinhua vanadium deposit, Qianjiaping vanadium deposit, Xiajiadian gold-vanadium deposit and Lengshuigou vanadium deposit. The vanadium is distributed in other minerals mainly in the form of isomorphic replacement. These types of ore are characterized by no independent vanadium mineral, low grade and vast reserves. Now in China the vanadium extraction technology is backward with low utilization rate of resources. The difficulties of vanadium extraction from black rock series are that the enrichment by means of mechanical beneficiation is difficult; the cost of direct chemical extraction is high and the emission of waste gas from pyrogenic process does not conform to environmental protection standard. Therefore the study of vanadium occurrence, the improvement & optimization of vanadium extraction technology and the realization of pollution-free and low-cost extraction of vanadium from black rock series are of great and realistic importance for environment-friendly exploitation & utilization of vanadium resource in China. The study is based on carbon content in ore of Cambrian black rock series in south Qinling Mountain. Two kinds of ore are selected. Vanadium ore with low carbon content (TC<1%) is taken as Sample 1 while vanadium ore with high carbon content (TC>10%) as Sample 2. Based on analysis of ore?s lithologic features and vanadium?s occurrence, a vanadium extraction technological process characterized by selective grinding, low cost and no pollution is proposed.

Mechanical activation of gibbsite [?-Al(OH)3] is the theme of this paper. Industrially prepared gibbsite used in the study has a mono modal size distribution with a median size, d50=110 µm. Mechanical activation of this gibbsite has been carried out in a planetary mill at ambient conditions. Mechanical activated gibbsite samples are characterised in terms of particulate characteristics, structural characteristics and reactivity. As a result, of milling, mono modal size distribution of the unmilled gibbsite changes to a broad multimodal distribution. Size reduction has been sharp in the initial stages of milling; median size reduces to ~7 µm during 15 min of milling. Thereafter no decrease in median size is observed; rather it is found to increase gradually with further increase in milling time, indicating particle aggregation. Morphological studies of milled gibbsite have shown that the platelets forming the agglomerate are separated first; the separated platelets then undergo breakage. Aggregation of particles sets in the later stages of milling as a result of increased surface area and surface energy. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies have clearly revealed the changes in gibbsite structure during milling. Analyses of XRD data show that the crystallite size of gibbsite decreases as the milling time progresses whereas its microstrain is found to increase. Accumulation of energy in the structure is the result in both cases. TEM micrographs with signs of defects leading to disordering of gibbsite structure complement the XRD results. Reactivity of milled gibbsite, decrease in its deydroxylation temperature and increase in alkali dissolution, is found to increase with mechanical activation. Increased reactivity of milled gibbsite is found to have a strong correlation with the BET specific surface area. Until recently, in consideration of fundamentals of gravity concentration theory, all computations have been based on determination of particles? fall velocity in an unrestricted medium (hydraulic size). Meanwhile, gravity separation processes are realized under conditions of particles? restricted fall, when important and sometimes decisive role is played by interacting forces of particles, dependent on their varying size, density and shape, i.e., segregation forces. We have developed devices and methods for measuring segregation velocities of fine particles of various size, density and shape during their loosening in air or aqueous medium. Besides, to exclude influence of medium upward flows, loosening was provided by superposition of vertical harmonic oscillations on measuring cell. It was established, that maximum segregation velocities are observed at certain optimal acceleration values and amplitudes of oscillations; excessive loosening leads to mixing and worsening of segregation. Velocity of some particles segregation through others depends on particles? size, density and shape, as well as nature of medium (air, water). Absolute segregation velocities of particles in air medium may reach 1~2 mm/s, in aqueous medium such velocities are by an order smaller. Analysis of rare-metal sands material gravity concentration results showed, that owing to segregation process during gravity separation, fine-size isometric particles of heavy minerals are recovered into gravity concentrates more actively, than larger ones, but more elongated in shape. It is convenient and simple to estimate mineral grains? shape by extent of their oblongness, described as ratio of particle minimal dimension to maximum. Besides, mineral mixtures gravity separation results are directly related to extent of oblongness of heavy particles, recovered in gravity separation process, and also to root-mean-square coefficient of their shape variation. The performed research showed that particles segregation in gravity concentration process plays not a lesser role, than hydrodynamics parameters, and demands further theoretical inquiry and experimental studies.

The aim of this work is to compare three different results of charge motion in a modified 5ft diameter lab mill and to identify differences and similarities in these results. The lab mill is modified from tumbling a ball charge to tumbling a charge of disks. This modification replicates 2D motion. This 2D condition is measured using an instrumented disk (iDisk) and analysed using a video imaging system. The iDisk is equipped with a 3D accelerometer array and rotation rate sensors. With the help of a video system, some measured quantities are also determined externally. The results of these three predictions or measurements are presented. A discussion is included.

The country ranks among world?s top five nations for its commodity reserves of coal and iron ore. Interestingly, only small part of country&apos;s landmass has been explored that provides opportunity for future substantial mineral discoveries. India plans to double infrastructure investments to US$ 1trillion. Despite the challenges in infrastructure project implementation, mining sector remains a key driver of demand growth for commodities in the years to come with a good prospect to grow in future.

The Mojiang nickel deposit is situated in Mojiang county, yunnan province, a tropical area in the southwestern China. The known geological resource (measured and inferred) includes 4 million tons of nickel sulphide ore at an average grade of 0.50% Ni and 0.34% As. Nickel minerals are mainly gersdorffite (NiAsS), millerite(NiS), morenosite (NiSO4?7H2O), and more than 50% nickel minerals is gersdorffite which contains arsenic. Pyrite is the dominant sulfide mineral, 22% in the ore and part of nickel minerals are locked in pyrite. It is difficult to attain the nickel concentrate quality allowed by a smelter and the acceptable nickel recovery through flotation due to the high arsenic in the ore and the nickel minerals locked in pyrite. The shake flask tests and column tests for nickel recovery from the Mojiang nickel sulfide ore had been finished by the end of 2003. The column bioleaching tests were carried out using the columns with diameter of 120 mm and height of 1200 mm, and 70% of nickel dissolution was attained in 300 days. A 10,000t pilot test heap was built in the Mojiang Nickel Mine by June 2003. The ore used in the test heap was supplied from the underground mine and was crushed to -20 mm before being feeding to the test heap, which is 4~5 m high, 30 m wide and 50 m long. The naturally adapted mesophile and moderate thermophile have been inoculated into the leaching pile by June 2003. The operating temperature in the heap ranges from 38? to 55?, varying with season. 30% of nickel dissolution was achieved in 3 months and the typical pregnant leach so-lution (PLS) contains 2~3 g/L Ni and 20~30 g/L Fe. The Ni sulfide which was produced by us-ing Na2S 10 t/t?Ni contains 16%~20% Ni and Ni recovery was 98%. 70% of Ni dissolution is expected in 12 months. The test heap was scaled up to 60,000 t of ore per year by mid of 2005. In this paper metallurgical studies and performance of the pilot test heap will be described. The results of mineralogy, shake flask tests and column tests on bioleaching of the nickel sulfide ore are reviewed. The key test heap operation parameters, the performance of bio-heap leahing-Na2S precipitation, ferrous oxidation-ferric precipitation-Na2CO3 precipitation, bacteria in the pile, water and acid balance, effluent disposal, capital and operation costs are also discussed.

Gole - Gohar Iron ore mines located in Sirjan, Southeast of Iran, have more than 1 billion Iron ore deposit and this area comprises 45 % of Iran Iron reservoirs. The aim of Wet tailing processing line is recovering Hematite ore from wet tailing of Gole - Gohar iron ore processing plant. The Investigations of Hematite recovery plant showed that the recovery of Iron ore to concentrate in Wet Tailing Processing (WTP) line is very lower than that has been predicted, sampling, and designing of the process parameters are not accurate and designed magnetic field intensity is not reasonable for the recovery of Iron in form of Hematite in this line feed. Applying of MIMS in WTP separator and changes in circuit caused in overwhelming increase of Fe recovery, from 11 to 40%. Although recovery of WTP line was improved, but low recovery of this processing line and high content of Hematite ore in WTP tailing, made applying Wet High Intensity Magnetic separators unavoidable. Two kinds of WHIMS have tested for processing of WTP line tailing. Results showed that traditional Jones separator with grooved plate matrix, is more suitable to achieve a better quality of concentrate compared to Slon® separator.
