"Understanding adsorption mechanism of polymeric organic process modifierssuch as carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) on talc hasbeen a major challenge due to anisotropic nature of talc basal planes and edge surfaces. The main objective of this study is to investigate the adsorption of CMC on the basal planes and edge surfaces of talc.Smooth basal plane and edge surfaces of talc were prepared successfully by simple cleavage and sophisticated ultramicrotome cutting method, respectively. The prepared surfaces were characterized by atomic force microscope (AFM) imaging to be sufficiently smooth for colloidal probe force measurements using AFM. Anisotropic surface charge characteristics were determined,with the basal planes to carry a permanent negative surface charge and edge surfaces featuring a pH-dependent charge characteristic. The adsorption of CMC on talc basal plane and edge surfaces at pH 9 in KClaqueous solutions of various ionic strengths wasinvestigated by in situ AFM imaging technique. Themorphology of adsorbed CMC on talc basal planes and edge surfaces was found to be significantly different, due to different binding mechanisms involved. Interaction of CMC with the talc basal plane was found to bedominated by hydrophobic interactions while its binding with the talc edge surface was mainly through chemical complexation and hydrogen bond. The amount of CMC adsorbed on both talc basal planes and edge surfaces increased with increasing ionic strengthof solutions. The methodology developed in our study opens the door to probe polymer adsorption on anisotropic phyllosilicate surfaces, which can help us better understand the mechanism of polymer adsorption on specific mineral faces."

In this study, the effect of adaptation of B.subtilis to sphalerite and galena with respect to the selective flotation of sphalerite from the sphalerite-galena synthetic mixture has been examined. The changes in the surface charge of the mineral and the bacterium, cell wall components and the profiles of secreted proteins are discussed. The flotation recovery of galena increases with the increase in the adaptation cycle of B.subtilis to sphalerite and galena, while the flotation recovery of sphalerite is independent of the adaptation cycle with either mineral. From the gel electrophoresis analysis, the protein profile for the unadapted and adapted cells is found to differ distinctly and this may be attributed to varying molecular weight fractions arising from different growth conditions. Electrokinetic measurements showed shifts in the iso-electric points of not only B.subtilis but also of the chosen minerals after adaptation. Additionally, the zeta potential of B.subtilis is found to become less negative after bacterial adaptation to the chosen sulfide minerals, while it showed an increase in the magnitude of surface negative charge after various enzymatic treatments. The change in the surface morphology and cell wall components such as phosphate, uronic acid and acetylated sugars of the bacterial species during adaptation to sphalerite and galena has been assessed. Selective flotation tests on a synthetic mixture of galena and sphalerite confirm that sphalerite can be preferentially floated from galena in the presence of the insoluble fraction of lysed B.subtilis cells initially adapted to sphalerite, with a high selectivity index. Methods of treatment of pyrite concentrates differ, depending on the content of pyrite and non-ferrous metals: oxidation roasting, sulphatization roasting, smelting, direct hydrometallurgical treatment and so on. Existing technologies do not provide for high recovery of metals, expenses associated with existing technologies are high, and environmental issues, associated with the existing technologies need serious attention. We have developed universal technology of the activating-dissociating autogenous roasting of pyrite concentrates using air based, or air, enriched with oxygen, blow. The basic process is taking place in accordance with the following reaction: (1-x)FeS2 + (1-2x)O2 = Fe1-xS + (1-2x)SO2 +Q The products of this reaction are pyrrhotinized cinder and roasting gases, rich in SO2 (up to 18 % in case of air blow) and poor in SO3, that contain up to 1 % of elemental sulphur. Cinder contains different forms of pyrrhotite. These forms of pyrrhotite differ by its content (from Fe0.843S to Fe0.945S), thermodynamic, magnetic (from 4.10-1 to 3.6 SI units), flotation properties (with pyrite dissociation the ?-potential of the product is moving towards more electrically positive charge, from 0.95 for pyrite to 0.2 for dissociation products) and other properties that depend on the conditions of roasting. The combination of pyrrhotizing roasting with different methods of cinder treatment allows to increase the level of sulphatization of non-ferrous metals during the roasting; reduce the amount of blow used during the processing; reduce dust losses to the gas phase; reduce the capacity of gas cleaning system and increase resistance to corrosion of the gas-treatment system, used for the production of sulfuric acid from pyrites. This combination of treatments also allows to use magnetic separation and flotation for separation of ferrous and non-ferrous metal compounds during cinder treatment; perform de-arsenation of arsenic containing concentrates and by-products. Pyrrhotinized cinder may be treated by oxidizing and non-oxidizing hydrometallurgical methods. During Zijinshan copper heap bioleaching, pyrite was leached in plenty resulting in high ferric concentration in solution. It has affected bioleaching and extraction processing greatly. It results much acid and iron in solution and bad effect to extraction processing. The paper studied the influence factors in the course of pyrite leaching and ferric ion chemical oxidation, especially studied the redox potential for copper bioleaching so as to find key factors affecting the dissolution difference between chalcocite and pyrite. The results show that the redox potential is important factor. Copper and pyrite leaching rates are 95% and 11% respectively and there is great dissolution difference between them at redox potential 700 mV (SHE). During pyrite bioleaching, the indirect action of bacteria gives priority to bioleaching cooperating with the direct attack of microbial cells attached to the mineral surface. Redox potential is determined by ratio of ferric and ferrous, ferric in solution was supplied by the way of oxidation of T. f bacteria, sufficient bacteria concentration and active character were two vial factors of controlling redox potential. It is indicated that copper can be selectively bioleached during copper bioleaching by controlling redox potential of bioleaching. The conclusion will provide theoretic foundation on balance of acid and iron during bioleaching for copper of higher S/Cu ratio. The experinment proved that bacteria activation was decreased on condition of both low pH value and intermittent aeratation during bioleaching. It resulted that the oxidation velocity of ferrous ion was decreased and redox potential was controlled. The dissolution of pyrite was depressed. It would be possible to actualize selective leaching of secondary sulfide copper ore during bioleaching process.

Structural alteration of pyrophyllite during mechanical activation in a planetary mill was investigated by X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques. Mechanochemical effect markedly promotes the decrease in reflection intensities with increasing the grinding time. Prolonged grinding causes the pyrophyllite to become the amorphous structure. It can be indicated that pyrophyllite is very susceptible to alteration by grinding. Crystal size (d006) of pyrophyllite appears to be a limit after 2h grinding. IR spectroscopy analysis shows a little alteration in the bands of pyrophyllite after mechanical activation. The results indicate that the ordered structure of pyrophyllite is destroyed and lattice deformation occurs. Porous silica was then successfully prepared via leaching the mechanically activated pyrophyllite. Pyrophyllite was first ground for 6 h. Ground samples were subsequently leached with 4 M hy-drochloric acid at 80 °C for 2 h to produce porous silica with specific surface area of 188.1 m2/g, total pore volume of 0.18 mL/g and average pore size of 3.9 nm from N2 adsorption analysis. Otherwise, the porous silica obtained from direct leaching of the original pyrophyllite only has a specific surface area of 4.3 m adsorption analysis. 2/g and total pore volume of 0.03 mL/g. It is inferred that grinding is favorable for the formation of microstructure pores. It offers a simple and convenient route for the preparation of porous materials from natural minerals.

Drying operation can have a major importance in a mineral processing undertaking. The proper sizing of dryers can ensure the specified dewatering level without energy wastage. However, often the sizing of fluidized bed is done disregarding the actual residence time distribution (RTD) of the particles inside the reactor. In this case it is usual to adopt the average residence time as a design criterion. In this work, we have quantified the effect of residence time distribution on drying, ensuring that a previously adopted fraction of the particles remains inside the reactor for the required time lapse needed for drying. Design criteria such as particulate flow rate and drying time, taking into account the statistical distribution of residence time was studied, matching the thermodynamic and fluid dynamic aspects of the drying process. Experimental tests carried out have confirmed the RTD for a teetering bed as the same for a canonical ideal mixing system. Although the fluidized bed volume using the proposed formulation was higher than that found for the average time based procedure, the efficiency gain in drying has proven advantageous.

This contribution deals with bubble adhesion on particle surface which consists of three steps ? the liquid film thinning, the film rupture and expansion of the three phase contact (TPC). Our attention is devoted to the third step ? to the description of the TPC expansion. Three-phase contact line expansion can be theoretically described using hydrodynamic and molecular-kinetic models. Both of these models were originally developed for the interaction of the bubble with horizontal plane in pure water. Our experiments deal mainly with the interaction of the bubble with the inclined plane in the solution of surface active agents. It was proved experimentally that molecular-kinetic model corresponds also to these conditions and this model was used for the description of the TPC expansion. The model is based on the theoretical description of the bubble contact angle on the three-phase interface. These contact angles change dramatically from 180o to equilibium (Young) contact angle close to 90o. Modificated ADSA method is used for the calculation of the contact angle. This method utilizes the Laplace equation of the capillarity; the bubble profile and the contact angle are evaluated using the set of experimental points around the edge of the bubble. The comparison of the experimental and calculated bubble profile shows a good agreement. The aim of the project is to describe the process of the TPC expansion during the adhesion of the bubble with the diameter up to 1 mm. Inclined planes were used instead of an experimental solid particle. Our experiments were provided in the solution of surface active compounds. The process of the adhesion was recorded using high-speed digital camera and images were evaluated using the image analysis software NIS-Elements. "Mineral and industrial raw material mining and preparation make a negative impact on the environment. The main types of impact are the land resources gathering, soil and water balance disturbance, surface-water, underground space and atmospheric air pollution, as well as the vast amount of solid and liquid waste production. Considerable attention in recent decades has been given to waste recycling. The task is to maximize the use of both newly formed and accumulated solid and liquid wastes. The mining and mining and smelting enterprises industrial waters are a very promising source of secondary hydromineralic raw materials. They have high concentrations of not only calcium, sodium, but also, for example, lithium, rubidium, heavy non-ferrous metals. In general, unfortunately, we have to state that today there is no wide practice of extracting valuable components from waste enrichment, as well as processing of man-made waters to extract metals from them. The quantity of extracted components from underground, and furthermore passing waters, is insignificant. At the same time there is a tendency to increased demand for rare metals: Sr, B, Br, I. This is explained by their wide use in many industries. For example, the consumption of lithium products is steadily increasing. The obtained results showed that in the liquid phase in connection with high salt content and a significant difference in the macro- and microcomponents contents, conditions are initially created for the microcomponents selective isolation possibility. The identified conditions realization is most possible in such technological processes as cryotechnology, sorption and ion flotation. There is an urgent need to expand research in this direction and to recognize as a publicly important task the mining and industrial waste processing full-scale introduction into the practice of operating mining and processing enterprises and iron and steel companies.INTRODUCTION Mineral and industrial raw material mining and preparation make a negative impact on the environment. Separation performance of a Floatex Density Separator (FDS) has been studied both experimentally and theoretically. Experimental results reveal that at a lower bed pressure the FDS acts like a classifier. Higher bed pressure is required to attain the concentration effect as proper development of suspension density occurs under these conditions. It is seen that the size or density alone is not able to describe the partition fully. The terminal settling velocity, which includes both the size as well as the density of the particle can be a useful descriptor of separation in a FDS. While a narrowly distributed feed offers better performance of a FDS, a wide size distribution of feed results in large scatter in the terminal settling velocity distribution and renders the separation difficult. The closely sized feed enhances the density effect in concentration. A higher teeter water flow rate also helps in carrying larger-lighter particles to the overflow by increasing the cut off terminal settling velocity as it increases the net upward force. A detailed description of separation performance in a Floatex Density Separator has also been established from theoretical considerations. Separation performance of the separator is described using a simple slip velocity model. The model has been validated com-paring the predicted FDS performance results with those experimentally measured under widely different operating conditions.

"The first 90 years of the last century generated a considerable volume of technical literature on the subject of grinding mill power and its prediction. It is therefore surprising that during this time there were no published models for predicting grinding mill power draw which were validated using a wide range of comprehensive industrial scale data.Notwithstanding this lack of data, the majority of models placed limited emphasis on the internal dynamics of mills and relied on simple assumptions which considered the charge to take up a fixed position and shape.Laboratory based studies (Liddell, 1986), and industrial data (Morrell, 1993), showed that these assumptions did not hold over a wide range of operating conditions, and brought into doubt the ability of the (then) existing models to accurately predict grinding mill power draw. Furthermore no model treated AG,SAG and ball mills as a single class of devices whose power draw could be predicted with the same equations.Through a detailed investigation of the charge dynamics, coupled with a large data base of industrial mill power draws, this situation was rectified by the end of the century, by which time a model had been developed and validated, which accurately predicted the power draw of all wet tumbling mills. This paper describes this model and reviews some of the earlier attempts at mill power modelling."

"Deep concentration of iron ores involves extraction, in addition to magnetite concentrate, of hematite and martite concentrates and recovery of other valuable components. A flotation technology was designed specifically for finely disseminated hematite ore, allowing producing saleable hematite concentrate containing 64-66% Fe. The main process challenge is caused by the presence of other ferruginous minerals such as carbonates, silicates, and phosphates, and fine hematite and martite mostly concentrated in the -0.044 mm fraction. Main operations of the processing circuit are removal of slime, flotation to remove impurities (carbonates, phosphates etc.) with an anionic phosphorous collector in an alkaline environment, hematite and martite flotation using same collector in a slightly acidic environment to produce commercial iron concentrate. Tailings of wet magnetic separation of magnetite containing 24.5% Fe and finely disseminated hematite ore containing 51% Fe were processed to produce iron concentrates with a yield of 15% and 50%, respectively, containing approximately 65% Fe and 5% of silica. Hematite flotation tailings had the highest content of gold (up to 0.09 - 0.11 g/t), while in other products it never exceeded 0.02 g/t. Using a Knelson concentrator was able to recover 40 to 45% of the gold into 3.31 g/t Au gravity concentrate. The success of gravity concentration is due to high gravitational contrast of gold to mostly quartz and aluminosilicates in the hematite flotation tailings. In general, the proposed process can be used as a solution to the challenge of selective concentration of finely disseminated iron minerals."

According to the difficulty of dolomite removal from collophanite,normal-reverse floatation process has been adopted in floatation with the use of highly selective collector G-4 and depressant S721. Good indexes of flotation have been obtained with the run-of-mine ore containing 17.96 % P2O5 and 2.31 % MgO being upgraded to a concentrate containing more than 30% P2O5 and less than 1% MgO. The reagent interaction mechanism in low grade collophanite flotation has been stu-died by FTIR analysis and theoretical calculation. The results indicate that the interaction between collector G-4 and collophanite is the result of chemical adsorption in combination with physical ad-sorption with chemical adsorption playing the major role. Depressant S721 adsorbs on dolomite surface to form a water film and effectively depresses the flotation of dolomite and reduces the MgO content in the concentrate.

Due to detrimental effects of cyanidation process on the environment in gold industry, application of cyanide alternatives such as thiourea are being highly considered in recent projects. In this study, the extraction of gold from poly metal ore, using thiourea was precisely investigated. The representative sample contained 2.5 ppm Au and 160 ppm Ag. The sample was categorized as oxide gold ore, because the main part of its pyrite was changed to iron oxide and hydroxide such as goethite and lepidocrosite. According to mineralogy, the main gangue mineral was quartz. It shows that gold grains are free and interlocked with quartz matrix. Also, the presence of a high amount of silver in free and sulfide forms and also the low content of other sulfide minerals such as base metal sulfides is a remarkable point of these studies. In the gold extraction process with thiourea, there are several parameters that affect the rate of gold dissolution such as concentrations of thiourea as a gold lixiviant and ferric sulfate as an oxidant, pH and size fraction of feed and leaching time. The influence of these parameters on the gold dissolution rate were investigated and optimized. The results showed that the concentration of thiourea is the most influential parameter which could increase the gold recovery to 71% (at 10 g/kg sample). The optimal amount of ferric sulfate was determined as 6 g/kg sample. Also, the optimal levels of size fraction of feed and pH of solution were 88% under 75 micron and 2 as acidity; respectively. Leaching time was 6 hrs. In addition, this sample was leached with cyanide and the optimized values of size fraction of d88=75 microns, pH=10.45, 2500 ppm of sodium cyanide with time leaching of 24 hours were concluded for maximum recovery of gold in solution. Finally, the results of cyanidation tests were compared to the thiourea dissolution after optimizing all affected parameters in cyanidation process.

Reutilization of waste printed circuit boards (PCB) can not only prevent potential environmental pollution, but also achieve recycling of secondary resources. Study on recycling of discarded PCB belongs to the front edge of environmental pollution prevention and resource recycling. In order to effectively crushing waste PCB, and solve the problem of secondary pollution of fugitive odor and dust during the crushing process, a wet impacting crusher was adopted to achieve comminution liberation of PCB in water medium. 96.79% of the crushed yield was distributed in ?2mm, and metal took 97.18% in this grade of production. Size distribution of PCB particles was characterized double peaks at the sizes of ?1+0.5mm and ?0.074mm. A double Rosin-Rammler function, is called DRR function, is put forward to describe the size distribution of PCB particles. The DRR function of cumulative weight percentage oversize of PCB was non-liner fitted by self-defining DRR function of the Origin 7.0. The evaluation indexes of the fitting results are the correlation coefficients R2 of 0.9994 and residual E of 0.18671, those show that DRR function is perfectly accurate. Based on the research the mechanical separation and material properties of PCB, a wet process of reclaiming metals from PCB using a new style separator ? tapered diameter separation bed (TDSB) in water medium was designed, and the related separation mechanism was studied. The fluid field of the tapered diameter separation equipment was simulated by the Ansys Flotran software, the variation laws of the velocity in each position in the fluid field as well as the equation of axial distribution sectional max velocity were analysed according to the simulation result, the stress change and motion trajectory of the pellet in the certain fluid field were analysed. The results show that the expanding tubular structure of the varied diameter separation bed indicates gradually decreasing velocity of water flow along the axis, assuming a certain angle in the bed, as a result of the gravity?s influence, and there was corresponding change to the distribution of the flow velocity, thus the whole formed a special fluid field where velocity variations exist in different positions. When the material passed through the fluid field along with the water flow, as a result of the difference to the particle density, the granularity and the shape, there would appear the difference to the motion trajectory as well as the movement distance under the action of the fluid: The lower density materials discharge along with water flow, but the higher density materials would be kept in bottom of the bed and discharge through material mouth. Therefore, light and heavy products were separated effectively according to the density. Using tapered diameter separation bed to process the ?1mm size crushed material of waste printed circuit boards, with the discharge of water 5.5m3/h, feed-rate of the material 250g/min and with an obliquity 35°, product with 93.92% in integration efficiency and 93.73% in recovery ratio of the metal were obtained by the primary separation. Compared with other mechanical methods, the range of particle size was broaden using the TDSB to recovery metals from PCB, and lower limit size of separation almost approach to 0. An innovative process of ?wet impact crushing+ classifying+ tapered diameter separation? recycling metals from waste PCB was developed.

It is a well-known fact that usage of reverse cationic flotation in magnetite ores processing enables to improve the quality of magnetite concentrates. We designed an iron ore concentrate technology (with 70 -71 % of iron) including reverse cationic flotation in pneumo-mechanical flotators RIF (developed by RIVS Corporation, Russia) with good biodegradable etheramines as collectors for flotation of quartz. Practical application of high biodegradable flotation reagents decreases environmental impact risk of objects and enterprises of mining industrial complex. This work presents results of development of flotation technology for production of high quality ferruginous concentrates from magnetite ores of Russia and Ukraine deposits. "Beneficiation of the epithermal gold mineralizations associated with an extensive alteration zone in the Serrenti-Furtei region on the island of Sardinia, is proving a complex issue. Experimental investigations have in fact demonstrated that while the ores contained in the upper parts of the deposit are amenable to conventional cyanidation, the gold contained in the refractory ores in the lower portions needs to be recovered by means of flotation, combined with leaching where necessary.The results of commercial heap leaching, carbon-in-leach (CIL) processing and flotation, designed on the basis of the experimental findings and applied to the oxidized portions and transition zones of the deep sulphide mineralizations, confirmed the expectations emerging from the laboratory tests."

"In this work, a novel compound 4-Amino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole was first synthesized and its selective adsorption mechanism on the surface of chalcopyrite was comprehensively investigated using UV-vis spectra, zeta potential, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FTIR), X-ray Photoelectron Spectrscpy Measurements(XPS), and Time of Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and first principle calculations. The experimental and computational results consistently demonstrated that AMT would chemisorb onto the chalcopyrite surface by the formation of a five-membered chelate ring. The first principle periodic calculations further indicated that AMT would prefer to adsorb onto Cu rather than Fe due to the more negative adsorption energy of AMT on Cu on the chalcopyrite (001) surface, which was further confirmed by the coordination bonding energies of AMT-Cu and AMT-Fe based on the simplified cluster models at a higher accuracy level (UB3LYP/Def2TZVP). The bench scale results indicated that the selective index improved significantly when using AMT as a potential chalcopyrite depressant in Cu-Mo flotation separation.INTRODUCTIONFroth flotation is one of the most important processes to separate valuable minerals from gangue by taking advantage of differences in the physical chemistry of their surface properties(Laitinen et al., 2014), particularly in their surface hydrophobicity. Hydrophobicity differences between valuable and gangue minerals could be regulated by adding different chemical additives (surfactants)(Kor, Korczyk, Addai-Mensah, Krasowska, & Beattie, 2014), such as collector and depressant. It could be conducted economically to selectively separate and enrich the complicated and/or poor ores, by adopting appropriate surfactants. For example, the beneficiation of molybdenite usually relies on a two-stage process to realize flotation separation of molybdenite from other unwanted sulphide ores(Wie & Fuerstenau, 1974). In the first step, a bulk molybdenite concentrate is produced by utilizing kerosene/ diesel oil and pine oil/alcohols as collector and frother, respectively. Second, sodium hydrosulphide, sodium cyanide, ammonium sulphide, or Nokes reagent are adopted as depressants in the separation stage. However, these depressants are usually toxicant and cannot meet the requirements of environmental protection. A large number of efforts have been taken to develop alternative environmentally-friendly depressants (Ansari & Pawlik, 2007; J. H. Chen, Lan, & Liao, 2013; Li et al., 2015; Yin, Sun, Hu, Zhai, & Guan, 2017; Yin, Sun, Hu, Zhang, Guan, Liu, et al., 2017; Yin et al., 2016). Although some novel and environmental-friendly depressants have been reported to achieve good performance in Cu-Mo flotation separation at a laboratory scale, there are still some challenging problems, including toxicity, high price or poor performance in practice, which severely limit their practical applications in Cu-Mo flotation separation on a commercial scale."

It is therefore surprising that during this time there were no published models for predicting grinding mill power draw which were validated using a wide range of comprehensive industrial scale data.Notwithstanding this lack of data, the majority of models placed limited emphasis on the internal dynamics of mills and relied on simple assumptions which considered the charge to take up a fixed position and shape.Laboratory based studies (Liddell, 1986), and industrial data (Morrell, 1993), showed that these assumptions did not hold over a wide range of operating conditions, and brought into doubt the ability of the (then) existing models to accurately predict grinding mill power draw. Furthermore no model treated AG,SAG and ball mills as a single class of devices whose power draw could be predicted with the same equations.Through a detailed investigation of the charge dynamics, coupled with a large data base of industrial mill power draws, this situation was rectified by the end of the century, by which time a model had been developed and validated, which accurately predicted the power draw of all wet tumbling mills. This paper describes this model and reviews some of the earlier attempts at mill power modelling.INTRODUCTIONThe early 1900?s saw the beginnings of published papers which tackled the problem of what influenced the power draw of tumbling mills and what equations (models) were suitable for predicting power draw. This interest continued for the rest of the 20th century and the literature contains many papers that attempted to satisfactorily answer these questions. A common and disappointing theme in the majority of them, however, is the distinct lack of suitable experimentally derived power draw data. This deficiency consequently limited the practical application of many of the attempts at modelling mill power draw. Prior to the early 1990?s some limited data on the power draw of grinding mills in the literature can be found, but as Harris et al (1985) remarked they are ?... too frequently unusable simply because one or more essential variables have been omitted?. The absence of published results, from vigorous experimental testing of the various models, has resulted in a general lack of evaluation of the validity of assumptions and hypotheses that such models contain. Harris et al (1985) however, did make some efforts in attempting to evaluate the performance of various power prediction equations and in so doing further developed a semi-empirical one of their own. However, in using manufacturers? published data, which themselves were undoubtedly generated by proprietary equations of unproven validity, they probably succeeded in generating little more than a consensus of the various errors in these models."

The present research covers the results of experiments carried out with high frequency vibration screen on dewatering of coal fines. In the tests, the addition of surface active reagents was studied employing a high frequency vibrating screen. To increase the efficiency of mechanical dewatering processes, ultrasonic treatment was applied along with surfactants and optimum dewatering conditions were obtained. The moisture content of the feed material was from 82.5% to 41% by the optimization of operation parameters including the angle of the screen, vibration frequency, feed rate and screen opening size. Optimum parameters obtained in dewatering processes carried out with the vibrating screen were kept constant and the effects of surface active reagents and ultrasonic treatment on dewatering were investigated. Finally, the moisture level of the material was further reduced from 41.0% to 37.66%.

The performance of Knelson Concentrators (KC) used in gravity gold circuits often rely on manufacturers recommendations for selecting operating parameters such as, fluidising water flow rate and cycle time. These parameters are not only dependent on the machine parameters but also on the feed characteristics such as, size distribution of the gold and gangue particles and the composition of its constituent minerals. Particles entering a KC experience a centrifugal acceleration due to the high bowl rotational speeds. The required centripetal force to maintain a circular orbit is provided by the fluid drag force created by inwardly moving fluidising water and the Bagnold?s force arising from the particle/particle collisions. When the fluidising water flow rate is low particles move towards the outer rim of the bowl forming a packed bed within the grooves. On the other hand, if the fluidizing water flowrate is high the bed expands and some particles would move towards the centre of the bowl and gets carried to the tailings stream, thereby reducing the amount of material retained within the grooves of the bowl. Based on a force balance on a particle captured within the KC, a criterion which can be used to predict the amount of material recovered in the bowl has been derived and validated by experimental data. It has been shown that this criterion may be used to demarcate the transition of the bed from a packed-bed state to a fluidised state depending on the fluidizing water flowrate. By identifying the conditions for the optimal expansion of the bed comprising different constituent mineral particles, it is possible to estimate the optimal fluidising water flow rate that would maximise gold recovery while minimising gangue recovery. It was also observed that the accumulation of valuable mineral in the bowl takes place by the displacement of the gangue particles in the bed by the incoming heavy mineral particles. The kinetics of this segregation process was also studied using synthetic mineral mixtures. The experimental data suggests that this process follows first order kinetics and that the build up of heavy mineral reaches a maximum which could be used to identify the optimal cycle time. In this work, the suitability of the above model in optimizing the performance of a KC have been reviewed. Also the necessity and merits of testing an unaltered feed samples in a larger KC as op-posed to the commonly adopted GRG test has been discussed.
