The Semenov hydrothermal sulfide cluster (13º31´N), consisted of five fields (Semenov-1, -2, -3, -4, and -5), was discovered in 2007 in the 30th cruise of R/V Professor Logatchev [Beltenev et al., 2007; 2009]. The hydrothermal fields are located on a seamount composed of ultramafic and mafic rocks, gabbro, plagiogranite, and their altered rocks. The Semenov cluster is considered to be the largest sulfide accumulation in the Ocean with massive sulfide (MS) resources of about 40 million tons [Beltenev et al., 2009]. MS of the Semenov-1, -3, -4, and -5 hydrothermal fields are mostly characterized by marcasite-pyrite composition whereas rich copper-zinc MS with high Cu and Zn contents (11.37?19.33 and 5.89?18.32%, respectively) and anomalous Au and Ag grades (22?188 ?127?1787 ppm, respectively) were dredged only at the Semenov-2 hydrothermal field associated with basalts (13°31.13´N, 44°59.03´W; 2360?2580 m of depths) [Ivanov et al., 2008].

A C-CORE study on behalf of the government of Newfoundland identified the inner continental shelf off northeast Newfoundland as having a relatively higher potential for hosting placer gold than other parts of the inner shelf. Under the auspices of the Canada-Newfoundland Cooperation Agreement on Mineral Development, the Geological Survey of Canada conducted a three-year project to map the distribution of surficial sediments and the abundance of placer minerals (particularly gold) from White Bay to Cape Freels. Much of the study area is a fjord coast, with steep rocky slopes and scattered gravel beaches. The extreme east, from Hamilton Sound to Cape Freels, has a wide, shallow inner shelf, sandy beaches, and extensive coastal dunes. Relative sea level was high in the late glacial period. It has fallen continuously in the west, but in the east it dropped to -19 m, before rising to within several metres of the present level by 3 ka. In terms of surficial sediments and processes, five zones are identified: (1) Deep offshore deep basins that contain thick postglacial mud overlying glacialmarine gravelly sandy mud. This zone is below a depth of 370 m in White Bay, 300 m in the Notre Dame Basin. 2) Basin transition zone in which the sea bed has been eroded by currents, so that glacialmarine sediments are exposed in places. Winnowing has formed an uppermost layer of muddy gravel. There is a slight potential for enhanced levels of fine particulate gold, but the gold would not be exploitable. (3) Iceberg impacted zone Above 200 m the keels of icebergs impact the sea bed, causing furrowing and pitting. Furrows predominate in deeper areas, and pits are concentrated at the inner boundary of this zone. Iceberg turbates have developed in shallow waters (60-100 m). Combined with winnowing, iceberg turbation could enhance the potential for concentration of fine particulate gold, but not into economic quantities. 4) Wave dominated zone Above approximately 60 m the sea-bed sediments are highly mobile due to waves, currents, and iceberg impact. Growth characteristics of Co-rich crusts from the Western Pacific have been approached. The thick crust shows 3 structural layers: compact upper layer, porous middle layer, and compact lower layer. The middle and lower layers have obviously different microscopic structure, color, and luster. Preliminary study of Calcareous nanofossils in one crust shows that the crust began to grow since Paleogene. The porous middle layer was formed from late Miocene to late Pliocene (Ca. 0.5 ~ 11.9Ma) and the compact lower layer was formed from late Paleocene to late Oligocene (Ca. 56.3 ~ 23.2Ma). The sedimentary hiatus of a 14.26Ma was observed between the middle and lower layers. The boundary between them to be Oligocene/Miocene (O/M) shows an important message on growth age.

"The paper provides the principle considerations for a novel vehicle class within the scope of the project Large Modifiable Underwater Mothership (MUM). The main idea for these ships is to create a highly modular building block system for the global layout. This building block system allows for a mission-dependent module assembly. For the purpose of deep sea mining for example, the range of tasks reaches from multipurpose transportation and exploration missions to supporting tasks in up to 5000 m depth, e.g. energy supply. Topics covered in this paper are related to potential missions for these vehicles, the modular layout and the structural layout of a separate block module. INTRODUCTIONAs one of the leading economic nations, Germany is in need of energy and raw materials. In the 21st century, marine resources are a prominent and promising alternative to land based resources. However, there are challenges that need to be considered. Rough and often poorly plannable weather conditions prevail distant to the marginal seas. Ice coverage makes offshore services inefficient and costly in Polar Regions. The average ocean depth of 3500m and the associated environment conditions cause difficulties in fulfilling tasks in the deep sea. The project Large Modifiable Underwater Mothership (MUM) [1] will enable more efficient solutions in order to accomplish undersea duties and services in harsh conditions.This joint project comprises workshares from Atlas Elektronik, EvoLogics, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, the University of Rostock and the Technische Universität Berlin. The principle idea of the project is the conception of a novel vehicle class. With highly modular autonomous underwater vehicles, this class will be capable of undertaking a variety of different tasks. Classically engineered vehicle structures will be split into single basis modules which can be flexibly assembled with specialized mission modules to form potent systems for individual assignments. The group of basis modules consists of units for navigation, vehicle control, propulsion and energy generation via fuel cell technology. The potential reusability of system relevant modules leads to a significant cost reduction and to shortened development periods compared with conventional vehicle concepts. The integration of newly designed additional mission modules is possible with little effort and a separate commercialization of single modules is feasible."

Recent research both on active and fossil systems has demonstrated that shallow subseafloor replacement processes are not only viable depositional mechanisms for massive sulfide mineralization, but likely contributed as a major component of the mineralization occurring in large VHMS deposits and in many present-day seafloor hydrothermal systems. In the giant Neves Corvo deposit, as in many others VHMS deposits of the Iberian Pyrite Belt, there is overwhelming evidence for silicate-sulfide replacement processes being largely responsible for the efficiency of the ore-forming systems and huge size of the deposits. Textural evidences at all scales, coupled with a well-constrained mass-balance geochemical analysis, indicate that extensive replacement in the lavadominated volcanic rocks of the footwall sequence, and disseminated replacement mineralization in the volcaniclastic and/or sedimentary units were major mechanisms of ore formation in the Neves Corvo deposit. Shallow metal deposition prior to fluid discharge on the seafloor is likely to play a major role in seafloor massive sulfide mineralization. This premise should be envisaged as critical in evaluating the economic potential of seafloor resources, and should certainly be part of the equation when plans for seafloor mineral exploration missions are drawn.

A new data set of cobalt-rich ferromanganese (Fe-Mn) crust chemistry has been completed for the first detailed sampling of a latitudinal crossing of the Pacific equatorial zone of high biological productivity. Samples were collected in January-March, 1999, during the AVON 2 cruise aboard the R.V. Melville, Scripps Institute of Oceanography. Samples were collected from 4.6° N to 9.2° S latitudes along two ridges, the Marshall Islands-Gilbert Islands ridge (4.6° N to 3.5° S) and the Howland Island-Tokelau Islands ridge (1° N to 9.2° S). The two ridges are offset east-west in the region of overlapping latitudinal sampling by about 466 km. We determined the concentrations of 48 elements for 147 samples from 39 dredge hauls taken on 33 seamounts and island flanks that occur between the Marshall Islands to the northwest and Samoa to the southeast. Element concentrations can be examined as varying spatially and with water depth in the ocean and we examine those relationships based on statistical analysis of the chemical and spatial data. The mean Fe/Mn ratio of 1 and mean Co content of 4645 ppm are typical of West Pacific hydrogenetic crusts; but the mean Co content is low compared to those of some equatorial North Pacific sites, such as the Marshall Islands and Johnston Island EEZs. In contrast, the mean Cu concentration (1540 ppm) is 35% higher than the mean concentration for Pacific Ocean Fe-Mn crusts (998 ppm). Another striking difference is the 40% higher Ba concentrations (mean 3107 ppm) compared to typical Central and West Pacific crusts (mean 1876 ppm); but Ba concentrations are lower than those in California continental-margin Fe-Mn crusts (mean 4085 ppm). A final significant difference in Fe-Mn crust chemistry is Zr concentrations, mean 921 ppm (maximum 1523 ppm), which is about 30% higher in this data set compared to the previously determined mean value of 613 ppm for Central and West Pacific crusts. Zirconium has a strong positive correlation with Ba and a weak positive correlation with Mn.

NAUTILUS MINERALS is a leader in the commercial exploration for and evaluation of seafloor massive sulfide (?SMS?) deposits. Nautilus has exploration licences covering 15,000 sq km of seafloor in Papua New Guinea and is evaluating other areas in the Western Pacific. The Nautilus Western Pacific Gold-Copper project is an interesting case study of the interaction of the disciplines of Science, Engineering and Environmental Science to solve and attend to the challenges of a project without precedence. The Science books of geology and marine biology with respect to seafloor massive sulfides are still being written or at best are thin volumes with recognition still we know very little at this time. Science?s early discoveries and study of these mineral processes on the seafloor provided invaluable data from which to develop an exploration strategy and the genesis of Nautilus itself. The Engineering required for development of such deposits is a combination of yet to be tested ?theory and engineering principles? and adaptation of best practice from other fields such as oil/gas and telecommunication cable laying. The Environmental guidelines for exploring these deposits, let alone mining them, is at the moment still being debated by a panel of experts chosen by the International Seabed Authority.

In 1994 and 1998 the German research vessel R/V Sonne undertook detailed mapping and sampling of the largely uncharted offshore areas of the Tabar-Lihir-Tanga-Feni island chain in the New Ireland Basin of Papua New Guinea. The New Ireland Basin occupies a fore-arc position with respect to the formerly active Manus-Kilinailau arc-trench system and hosts a series of Pliocene to Recent alkaline volcanoes which are built on rifted Miocene sedimentary basement. Several of the volcanoes possess high-level porphyry stocks and active geothermal systems, including gold-depositing hot springs and the giant (40 million ounces) Ladolam gold deposit on the island of Lihir. On the southern flank of Lihir island, a group of three volcanic cones were discovered at water depths from 1.000-1.500 m. The volcanoes are located in a narrow zone of recent seismic activity and elevated heat flow (up to 100 mW/m2). The recovered volcanic rocks consist of fresh alkali-olivine basalts, clinopyroxene-rich basalts (ankaramites), porphyritic phlogopite basalts, and trachybasalts. Unusual gold-rich hydrothermal precipitates were recovered from the summit of the 600 m high Conical Seamount located only about 10 km south of Lihir Island. 1200 kg of sampled material systematically collected with a TV-guided grab from the top plateau (150 x 200 m, 1.050 m water depth) are intensely mineralized with pyrite, marcasite, minor sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena, tennantite/tetrahedrite, and orpiment/realgar together with traces of anglesite, cerrusite, and amorphous silica in stockwork-like veins. Bulk samples of the vein mineralization consist mainly of clays, silica, and disseminated sulfides, and have an unusual high gold content ranging from 1.2-44.0 ppm Au. In some of these samples, grains of native gold (about 1 micron in diameter) were identified by SEM in pyrite and sphalerite. The gold-rich material also contains high concentrations of silver (up to 1000 ppm) and typical epithermal elements such as As (2.6 wt.%), Sb (0.2 wt.%), and Hg (34 ppm). Similar to epithermal deposits on land, which usually have only low base metal contents, the samples from Conical Seamount contain only minor amounts of Zn (max. 4.5 wt.%), Cu (2.0 wt.%), and Pb (2.0 wt.%). Many of the samples recovered from Conical Seamount are virtually identical to the gold ore at Lihir.

Hydrothermal sulfides were recovered from the16°50?S triple junction area in the North Fiji Basin, at a water depth of ca. 1900 m. The chimney samples can be divided into three groups according to their major metal contents: 1) type 1 (Fe-Cu-rich), 2) type 2 (Fe-Cu-rich with minor Zn), and 3) type 3 (Zn-rich) chimneys. Type 1 chimneys are mainly composed of chalcopyrite and pyrite, and are enriched in elements commonly precipitated under high temperature conditions (> 300°C), such as Cu, Co, Mo, and Se. Type 3 chimneys consist dominantly of sphalerite and marcasite with traces of pyrite and chalcopyrite, and are enriched in elements commonly associated with low temperature (150 to 250°C), such as Zn, Cd, Pb, As, and Ga. Type 2 chimneys show mineralogy similar to that of type 1 chimneys but their metal contents range between type 1 and type 3 samples. Trace element compositions of basaltic rocks indicate that magma generation in the triple junction area was influenced by two different sources: N-MORB and E-MORB. Sulfur and lead isotope patterns of the hydrothermal chimneys show distinct differences between the type 1 and type 3 chimneys. For example, type 1 sulfides are depleted in 34S and have lower Pb isotope ratios compared to type 2 and 3 chimneys. The d34S values (0.4 to 5.6?) of chimney sulfides are typical range of sulfur isotope composition of sediment free mid-ocean ridge hydrothermal system. Type 2 and 3 sulfides show slightly higher d34S values than type 1 sulfides, which can be explained by subsurface boiling of hydrothermal fluids followed by mixing of saline solutions with ambient seawater. Lead isotope compositions of the chimneys indicate that the Pb in type 1 and type 3 chimneys originates from hydrothermal leaching of N-MORB and E-MORB volcanic rocks, respectively. Considering that both these chimneys are located in the same area, our model suggests that type 1 chimneys formed by hydrothermal circulation controlled by an intrusion of N-MORB magma; the fluids were not influenced by boiling during the formation of type 1 chimneys. In contrast, type 3 chimneys are younger and were formed by hydrothermal circulation closely related to E-MORB magma intrusion at shallower depth. The necessary conditions for phase separation of the hydrothermal fluids that formed the type 3 chimneys might result from changed P-T conditions in a shallower high-temperature reaction zone beneath the hydrothermal venting site. Under these conditions the fluid may cross the two-phase boundary for seawater, ensuring subcritical phase separation. The mineralogical and geochemical properties of these chimneys suggest that type 1 and type 3 chimneys were probably black smoker and white smoker, respectively. Type 2 chimneys might be product of low-temperature replacement of type 1 chimneys, which is related to formation of type 3 chimneys.

The Benthic Impact Experiment (BIE) is designed to address the effects of sediment redeposition prior to the commencement of commercial mining. The experiment is being conducted in collaboration with Russian scientists from the Yuzhmorgeologiya Association aboard the R/V YUZHMORGEOLOGIYA. Sediment resuspension and subsequent redeposition during manganese-nodule mining is predicted to be one of the primary impacts on benthic communities living on the abyssal seafloor. The redeposition thicknesses that will cause significant faunal mortality in the deep sea are unknown. Sediment redeposition could adversely affect abyssal benthic communities through entombment, or through starvation caused by food dilution and obstructed feeding. This spring NOAA conducted the main portion of the BIE experiment, blanketing the experimental area with varying thicknesses of sediment using the Deep Sea Sediment Resuspension System (DSSRS). The DSSRS was conceived by NOAA scientists, designed and built by Williamson and Associates, and is the critical piece of equipment used to generate the controlled sediment redeposition environment on the 4800-m deep abyssal plane. The DSSRS consists of an 1800-kg sled, 4.8 m long, 2.4 m wide, and 2.2 m high. The sled was towed and powered using an 8,000-m, 26-mm single conductor cable having a 3,000 VAC capacity. As the sled was towed across the bottom, mud was ingested through two rear-facing, 45-cm wide intakes using two 7.6-horsepower pumps, and discharged 10 to 20 m above the bottom through two 20-cm diameter riser hoses. Each pump was instrumented with optical backscatter sensors providing real-time information about the discharge concentration.

The North Fiji Basin (NFB) is a mature intraoceanic back arc basin with an age of ~12 Ma. Recent volcanism and spreading activity are focused along the Central Spreading Ridge (CSR), A ridge segment more than 800 km long, composed of four main segments, the N160°, N15°, north-south (N-S), and southernmost segments from north to south. The dominant volcanic rock in the entire central spreading ridge is normal mid-ocean ridge basalt (N-MORB), very similar to those emplaced along mid-oceanic ridges. Conversely, influence of an oceanic island basalt (OIB) source increases northward from 18°20'S. Several basalts which show a significant subduction-related component are also observed in the southern part of the NFB. Hydrothermal activity along the spreading centers of the North Fiji Basin was investigated by several previous works, especially by the STARMER project in 1989 and 1991. Both extinct and active hydrothermal vents are found on the N15° and N-S segments. In contrast, only traces of hydrothermal activity have been found on the N160° segment. Although high temperature activity and related massive sulfide deposit on the N15° segment was further investigated by several follow-up studies, no systematic survey for other hydrothermal sites was conducted after their discovery. In 2012 and 2013, KIOST performed two hydrothermal expeditions aboard the R/V Onnuri in the three targeted areas of hydrothermal activity along the CSR of North Fiji Basin. The new ship-submersible system with R/V Ka'imikai-o-Kanaloa as a mothership and the PISCES V as the submersible completed its first season of dives. The dives involved deployment of the PISCES V in the Hawaiian Islands between the months of July and October 1996. Submersible deployments up to depths of 2,000 meters in sea states up to a high three were made. The new hook and clasp deployment and retrieval connection for PISCES V to the telearm was shown to be an effective system for handling the PISCES V with the A-frame. The shipboard multibeam survey and seawater sampling capability proved to be especially effective in re-mapping the summit of the submarine volcano Loihi following a major volcano-tectonic event and for following the source and configuration of the new hydrothermal plume. Following the earthquake swarm of July 17 to August 18,1996, major changes in the geological setting of Loihi submarine volcano took place. Prior to the seismic event, the geology and structure of the summit of Loihi was represented by a platform-like area 8,100 meters long and 5,400 meters wide enclosed by the 1,200-meter depth contour. The summit was characterized by the presence of two prominent pit craters and eastern and western crater located at water depths of 1,100 and 1,370 meters, respectively. A hydrothermally active volcanic cone, named Pele's Vents, was located at a depth of 960 at the southern edge of the summit. The floor of the summit of Loihi was largely covered by prismatic talus, with interstitial hydrothermal clays. Pillow and tube lavas with volcanic cones 5 to 50 meters high were exposed along the axes of the southern and northern rift zones. The inner margin of the summit displayed fissures and normal faults with the downthrown component towards the center of the summit. The pre-earthquake structural data suggest a pre-caldera structural stage for Loihi. Maximum sustained hydrothermal activity observed on Loihi over the past 10 years existed at Pele's Vents with other sporadic venting occurs along the summit platform and along the south rift. Following the earthquake swarm, the hydrothermally saturated Pele's Vents cone gave way and slid into the inner pit crater. Subsequently, the observed above- bottom hydrothermal plume source deepened from 960 to 1,160 meters, possibly emanating from the same intrusive heat source as Pele's Vents. The observed inward collapse of the summit structures and subsequent opening of fissures gave rise to diffuse venting from the newly formed caldera-like depression with the bottom-hugging hydrothermal pool located at depth between 1,250 and 1,220 meters at the sites of the pit craters.

"Recent concerns over the availability of many mineral raw materials, and newly available technological developments, produced renewed interest in deep-sea mining. However, environmental concerns, with variable degrees of justification, are raising opposition to the concept. The forecast for the behavior of consumption versus availability of many raw materials, nearly all critical metals, arguably show that consumption will grow much faster than resource discovery onshore. Finding new sources of raw materials seems inescapable. The deep seafloor stands out as the only likely candidate.Sea Floor Mining and the EcosystemMarine mining has already started, decades ago, for diamonds, currently up to depths near 400m. Although the industry recognizes there is a footprint, it considers the footprint quite minor, because the area mined is small: in Namibia, where offshore diamond mining is now 70% of the country’s total, only 3% of the concession of 3,700 sq miles (9600km2) have been mined. As plans to mine deep-sea massive sulphide deposits and polymetallic nodules progress, the environmental concerns grow. In mid 1993, Bauer Spezialtiefbau GmbH, based in Germany got the order to develop a sampling tool capable of penetrating all different types of seabed sediments including cobbles and boulders and into bedrock. BHP and their partners Benguela Concessions Ltd., had been convinced by the Bauer Trench Cutter Technology and a large scale test in Germany that this system will be the right one to fulfill their expectations for sampling the diamond area off the coast of Namibia. The technique of the tool is based on Bauer's standard cutter technology, which is widely used for the installation of cut-off and diaphragm walls all around the world. The two counterrotating cutter wheels with 12.1 tom torque each cut an area of 3 x 1.2 m (up to 3 x 3 m are possible). The material mixed with seawater was then pumped to the separation plant on board the vessel Geomaster with a capacity of approximately 700 m3/h. Cutter wheels and mud pump were mounted on a special cutter frame and connected by wire ropes and hydraulic hoses to the vessel. An outer frame with four telescopic legs supported the cutter vertically on the uneven seabed and allowed a controlled penetration of the tool up to 6 m into the diamond bearing ground. The tool required a total power installed of approximately 800 kW. All hoses, the 6-inch mud hoses as well as the hydraulic hoses, were stored and compensated on drums on board suitable for a water depth of up to 200 m. Launch and recovery of the tool was effected through the moon pool of the vessel and the 25 m high, special designed drill tower. The 65? to sampling tool had been commissioned in early 1994 in Cape Town. After intensive testing the sampling programme of more than 4000 holes could be successfully completed by January 1995.

The world-class Neves-Corvo deposits were intersected by drilling in 1977. They occur in the (Carboniferous) Iberian Pyrite Belt (IPB), Western Europe&apos;s largest stock of base metals (see Bamga, 1990, in Dallmeyer RD, & Martinez E, eds, Pre-Mesozoic Geology of Iberia, Springer-Verlag). Massive and stringer sulfides in the area sum up to about 200 Mt (109 kg), in five main orebodies (Neves, Corvo, Graca, Zambujal and Lombador). They include unique, extremely high grade copper and tin ores ( - 33 Mt Cu ores, -7.5% Cu, and -4 Mt Sn ores, -2.6% Sn, - 12.5% Cu). Also present are -50 Mt polimetallic ores (-6% Zn, 1.2% Pb, 64 ppm Ag). The remaining are relatively low grade pyritic massive and stringer sulfides (Cu < 2%. Sn < 1%, Zn equivalent < 4%). The geological setting is one of bymodal submarine volcanism, with predominant felsic, explosive volcanism and associated sedimentation (detrital and chemical), which took place on a shelf-facies, quartzite-phyllite basement (of Upper Devonian age). The plate tectonic setting has been the object of much debate. Current interpretations favour that the IPB volcanism took place in a tensional fore-arc region, associated with oblique subduction and collision (Silva et al., 1990, same volume as above). At Neves-Corvo there are many different ores, that may be grouped in four main types: fissural (at the base), breccia, massive (intermediate) and "ruban6 " (at the top). Fissural ores seem to correspond to stockworks in contrasting types of host rocks (gray to black shale, sericitic, chloritic and graphitic, and light gray volcanic rock). Massive ore may contain significant shaly gangue, at the base of individual orebodies, and silica-rich (cherty) varieties towards the top. The more sulfide-rich varieties predominate, and are usually well banded.

The 1982 United Nations Convention on the Low of the Sea includes provisions under Article 76 for extending a coastal State&apos;s jurisdiction beyond the 200-nautical-mile (nm) Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and for establishing the seaward limits of sovereign rights over natural resources. Article 76 prescribes a set of methodologies for determining these outer limits based on physiography and sediment thickness. The methodologies were applied to each of the five continental* margin areas of the United States - Atlantic, Pacific, Gulf of Mexico, Alaska, and Pacific Islands-using existing digital hydrographic and geologic data. Figures 1 and 2 show the results of applying the methodologies to the Atlantic, Pacific, Alaskan, and Gulf of Mexico continental shelves. Figure 1 depicts the preliminary limits of each of the Article 76 determinations for the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico continental shelves. The Atlantic limits were described by Carpenter, Thormahlen, and Amato (1995) at the 26th Underwater Mining Institute.1 The limits for the Alaskan continental shelves are shown in Figure 2. Additional areas beyond the 200 nm EEZ are highlighted. These include a small area north of the U.S. - Canada boundary, containing 7,000 km2, a large area north of Point barrow (395,000 km2), and a third area north of the Aleutian Islands (178,000 km2). The shelf between the first two areas appears to have sediments thick enough to qualify for the 1 percent method (Irish Formula); however, year-round ice cover has prevented acquisition of seismic or drill data. The entire northern Alaska shelf is prospective for petroleum The Gulf of Mexico (Figure 1) has two small areas beyond the EEZ known as "doughnut holes." One is south of Louisiana and includes part of the Sigsbee Escarpment, an area believed to have potential for oil and gas. Oil was found on Sigsbee Knoll in cores from Deep Sea Drilling Project&apos;s Leg 1 cruise in 1968. The Sigsbee areas contains about 6,000 km2. The second area is south of the Florida panhandle and contains about 12,000 km2.

The emerging marine minerals exploration and mining industry is currently focused mainly on the technical elements for its success such as developing exploration and mining technologies. However, in one sense, the technical challenges are quite soluble whereas those arising in the fields of the environment and public opinion could present this new generation of miners with problems that are far more difficult to overcome. One need only look at the issues currently faced by mining projects on land to see how powerful the new forces of so-called ?civil society? are in stopping mineral developments in many countries. From the geographic viewpoint, there are many countries but there is just one ocean, so the impacts experienced by any one operation are likely to have pervasive repercussions throughout the industry. A well-oiled NGO development protest lobby will see leverage in resisting this new industry and will seize on the single-ocean angle. The Australian Minerals Industry has established a voluntary Code for Environmental Management that provides an active and valuable model for satisfying the ?court of public opinion? and in delivering economic results to industry that are in current jargon, sustainable. An explanation of the Code for Environmental Management, and the reasons behind 44 companies representing more than 300 operations and 85% of Australia?s sizeable mineral production being signatory to it will be given. Participants see it as a means to future shareholder wealth.

INTRODUCTION High tellurium contents in the ancient volcanogenic massive sulfides (VMS) and modern seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) have been reported by V.Maslennikov (Maslennikov et al., 2013). However findings of tellurium minerals in SMS are rather rare. The only reported coloradoite and bi-melonite, have been found in massive sulfides from Rainbow hydrothermal field (Fouquet, 2010). Here we present data about Te - minerals in sulfide chimneys of different ages (up to 84.7 kyr - Cherkashov et al., 2010 ) from Semyenov-2 hydrothermal field. The obtained results The Semyenov hydrothermal cluster was discovered and studied in the course of cruises 30 and 32 of R/V Professor Logachev (2007 and 2009) at 13º31´ N, MAR. This area is associated with an oceanic core complex and associated with serpentinized gabbro- peridotites and basalts. Plagiogranites and tonalites have been dredged on seafloor in the Semyenov cluster area (Cherkashov et al., 2013; Pertsev et al., 2012). In total, 25 sulfides samples have been studied. The major and minor mineralogical phases were identified using reflected light microscope. Major element compositions of ore- forming minerals were analyzed on a Hitachi S3400N scanning electron microscope at the Geomodel Center, St. Petersburg State University (St. Petersburg, Russia) with an AzTec Energy 350 (EDX) detector and an INCA 500 (WDX) detector.

Shallow-water formation of marine ferromanganese nodules as well as their deep-water analogues is found throughout the global ocean. The Baltic Sea is a key province for the shallow-water type of marine minerals. The following main distribution areas of Fe-Mn nodules have so far been discovered in the Baltic Sea: the Gulf of Bothnia, the Gulf of Riga, Central Baltic area (Gdansk- Klaipeda) and the Gulf of Finland. The last area (Gulf of Finland/Finnish Bay) is the best studied from all aspects including geological prospecting and environmental assessment.

Bottom sediment sampling by means of a box corer, as a direct method of deep seabed exploration for polymetallic nodules, is the most comprehensive way to obtain various types of geological information on points forming a network of stations. However, direct information is lacking from areas separating those stations and has to be approximated by interpolation or extrapolation, which leads to uncertainties. Sediment sampling with a gravity or piston corer can provide information on the superficial, up to 4 m thick, part of the sedimentary cover. As opposed to box coring, gravity or piston coring provides no information on nodule abundance. Information for unsampled areas can be gained by application of remote techniques of exploration. The techniques of choice in visualising nodule-rich fields, nodule-free areas, hard rock outcrops and other obstacles for seafloor mining involve using sonar and continuous deep sea (CDS) camera. Seafloor mapping can be rendered with two major sonar types: the side scan sonar used to obtain seafloor imagery and multibeam sonar for bathymetric data; the two types are usually combined and work with an intermediate frequency profiler. Photo-profiling by means of a deep sea towed camera provides a series of seafloor photographs, each supplemented with information on the area covered by each frame, including the nodule abundance. Remote techniques have been quite frequently applied by the Interoceanmetal Joint Organization (IOM) in nodule field exploration. Recently, geoacoustic techniques (side scan sonar + profiler) and CDS were applied for exploration of IOM?s first prime area H11 (5372 km2) on 6 transects. During the IOM-2009 cruise, a total of 295 km of geoacoustic transects and 344 km of photo-transects were surveyed. The data obtained were processed with the aid of earlier information produced by multibeam sonar surveys. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the advantages of remote techniques, particularly with regard to application of the towfish device, for geological and geotechnical applications in exploration for polymetallic nodules.
