"Industrial-grade limestone is found in both the Lower Silurian La Vieille Formation and Upper Silurian LaPlante Formation of the Chaleurs Group in northern New Brunswick. Currently, between 150 000 and 200 000 tonnes of limestone are produced per year from the proximal facies of the LaPlante Formation at the Sormany quarry of Elmtree Resources Ltd., located west of Bathurst.The proximal facies of the LaPlante Formation was deposited on the margins of tectonically uplifted Ordovician terranes. This facies comprises stromatoporoidal-algal bindstone intercalated with wackestone, packstone, and floatstone in variable proportions. The distal facies comprises calcareous shale and minor limestone deposited deeper offshore.Folding and faulting related to Middle Devonian Acadian tectonism have caused an increase in the apparent thickness of the limestone sequences, especially adjacent to the regional Rocky Brook-Millstream fault. Structural and stratigraphic observations indicate that some of the limestone bodies in the area have been tectonically displaced from their site of deposition.A variety of prospecting techniques was used to locate new limestone resources, including geological mapping, airborne and ground electromagnetic surveys, and satellite remote sensing. Clastic rock units above and below the LaPlante Formation have distinctive properties that help to trace the intervening limestone along strike. Because of water-saturated glacial cover, thick vegetation, and the small size of targets, airborne geophysical methods did not prove effective in delineating limestone beds, but aeromagnetic surveys helped map the underlying clastic unit. The remote-sensing data and especially high-resolution digital elevation models helped in identification of karst topography related to limestone."

"The milling of sulphide ores inherently generates “thiosalts”, a series of partially oxidized sulphur oxyanions (S2O3 2-, S3O6 2-, S4O6 2- etc.), which make control of effluent treatment systems difficult because their natural oxidation produces acid with the potential to lower the pH within the treatment system and/or receiving environment.At the Xstrata Copper Kidd Metallurgical Site, thiosalt oxidation in the Tailings Management Area continues after buffer storage Ponds A and C where lime is added to precipitate metals and elevate the pH to within the required range for discharge. If the additional acidity generated during the continued process of thiosalt oxidation is not neutralized there is a risk that the final effluent will be non-compliant with regulated standards.To mitigate this risk, in 2007 a full scale pilot trial was conducted with hydrogen peroxide in order to force the complete oxidation of thiosalts prior to the lime treatment stations. This method of chemical oxidation had been shown to be effective at Xstrata Zinc’s Brunswick Mine. The pilot results indicated that a maximum of 50% of the stoichiometric quantity of hydrogen peroxide is required to reduce the thiosalt concentration in the No. 2 thickener overflow stream (feed to buffer storage Ponds A and C) to less than detection (10 mg/L); however, treatment was only effective in the presence of a 20 mg/L iron (Fe) catalyst. Since the hydrogen peroxide addition point at the No. 2 tailings thickener overflow typically contains <1 mg/L total Fe, a second reagent, ferric sulphate, was used to increase the total Fe concentration to the required level. PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) operates copper and gold mining operations in a mountainous area of the Mimika regency, near Tembagapura, Papua (formerly, Irian Jaya), Indonesia. The mining and concentrating operations typically produce 240,000 metric tonnes per day of Copper and Gold ore from the combined mining of an 80,000 tonne per day (ore) block cave operation (DOZ Mine) and a 160,000 tonne per day (ore) open pit mining operation (Grasberg Open Pit). The Grasberg Open pit mine will be complete in 2016 at which time PTFI?s operations will convert to Underground. Mining operations will transition from today?s mixed surface and underground operation to full underground mining over the next 6 years. This paper reviews the history of Redpath?s relationship with PTFI, beginning with a raiseboring contract in 1981 and evolving into vertical and horizontal development contracts of up to 37,700 equivalent metres of lateral development and 4,000 metres of vertical development in 2011. An overview of the current operations (PTFI?s Grasberg Open Pit and DOZ Underground Mines) and transition period (challenges for the transition from current to future underground mines) is presented with details of development of common underground infrastructure and future mines; Big Gossan Mine, DMLZ Mine, Grasberg Block Cave Mine, and the Kucing Liar Mine.

Introduction Although the equilibrium conditions of the copper-tin alloys have been the subject of a ?great amount of research, the equilibrium diagram is still in doubt. The first systematic investigation of the series was made in 1894 by Le Chatelier, who published a freezing-point curve. In 1895, Roberts-Austen and Stansfield published the complete liquidus and partial solidus curves, which they modified somewhat in 1897. Their liquidus as given in 1897 is essentially that accepted today (Figure 3). Haycock and Neville also published a liquid us curve in 1897. In 1898, William Campbell published a series of micrographs showing the changes in microstructure which accompanied the thermal changes of Stansfield? s diagram. The classic work on the bronze series was published by Heycock and Neville in 1903. Their diagram was based on both thermal and microscopic evidence, and is the first for this series of alloys which can be considered nearly complete. Further, it was the first bronze diagram in which any attempt was made to apply the phase rule in the interpretation of the thermal and microscopic results. That portion of Heycock and Neville&apos;s diagram covered by the present work is reproduced in Figure 7.

Résumé Six modèles métriques de remblai cimenté en pâte (RCP) ont été suivis durant 120 jours par l?utilisation de deux méthodes géophysiques non-destructives : la résistivité et la micro-sismique. Les RCP étaient constitués de trois résidus miniers et de deux proportions de ciment (3% et 6% en poids). En parallèle, des cylindres de RCP étaient utilisés pour évaluer périodiquement l?UCS. La résistivité augmentait quasi-linéairement de 28 à 120 jours pour tous les RCP investigués. Des variations de résistivité selon le type de résidu et le pourcentage de ciment ont été observées. Une équation empirique a été dégagée entre l?UCS, la résistivité, le temps, la densité relative et le rapport eau/ciment (E/C). La mesure de la vitesse des ondes de cisaillement a permis de dégager une équation mathématique de type exponentielle qui relie la résistance mécanique sans correction préalable par les paramètres de la recette de RCP. La réalisation de ce projet avait pour but de dégager la meilleure approche non-destructive afin d?estimer la résistance mécanique des remblais en chantier minier. Sur la base des résultats obtenus, les deux méthodes utilisées ont donné des résultats probants afin d?estimer la résistance mécanique et les deux méthodes sont donc à même d?être utilisées en chantier souterrain. Abstract Six scale models of cemented paste backfill (CPB) were followed during a 120 days period using two nondestructive geophysical methods: resistivity and micro-seismic. CPB were made up of three mine tailings and two cement proportion (3% and 6% by weight). In parallel, CPB cylinders were used to periodically evaluate uniaxial compressive strength (UCS). Resistivity was increasing nearly in straight line from day 28 to day 120 for all CPB models. According to the tailing type and cement percentage, resistivity variations were observed. An empirical equation emerged from UCS, resistivity, time, specific gravity of tailings and, water/cement ratio. The use of shearwave velocity allowed to identify a mathematical exponential equation related to mechanical strength without prior correction of the CPB?s formula parameters. The purpose of this project was to identify the best non-destructive approach in order to evaluate the mechanical strength of backfill in a mine site. On the basis of those results, both methods gave conclusive results in order to estimate mechanical strength and both methods can be used in underground operations.

The teaching of geophysics in Canada at the present time presents a variety of approaches to the subject, and the different paths adopted imply, in turn, an uncertainty in the minds of some educators as to the role this science is to play in the future progress of geology, and a hesitancy to commit themselves to foster its development. The pedagogical attitudes vary from a whole-hearted acknowledgment that the science of geophysics is fundamental to the understanding of terrestrial phenomena (including, of course, geological processes) to a hesitant immersion of the toe to test the water&apos;s temperature (which is, of course, essentially a geophysical experiment) before deciding whether or not the time is ripe for total immersion. The present discussion has been organized in the hope that it will help to clarify the roads to geophysics and assist educators in making a more understanding choice of the best paths for them to follow, according to their particular requirements and objectives. Before proceeding further, however, it is necessary to define the term geophysics and circumscribe the field it covers. In the first place, it should be emphasized that geophysics is NOT confined to the art of geophysical prospecting. The popularization of geophysics has unfortunately engendered a general misconception of the word, and consequently a tendency to ignore the wider meaning of the term. Etymologically, geophysics means the physics of the earth. It is so understood by the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics and the various geophysical societies which adhere thereto. To them, geophysical prospecting is but a very small field indeed, which they consider had best be left to engineering and prospecting organizations.

ERP systems have been widely implemented nowadays in several industries. However, ERP was originally designed to fit former MRP and MRP II users, and most of the ERP research has been focused on discrete manufacturing . On the other hand, process industries ? and mining in particular ? present many peculiar characteristics, which are difficult to comply with ERP systems standard functionalities. Again, very limited research has been developed covering enterprise management systems in mining. The objective of this paper is to identify, through an explanatory study that includes a case study methodology, how ERP systems manage the functional areas of the mining industry, and how they fit into the mineral value chain IT requirements. A secondary objective is to identify the gaps between ERP?s functional capabilities and the mining industry business requirements, and to point out the perceived benefits they generate to the companies.

This paper presents the results of comparative analysis of effective income-based tax rates for mining in the Northwest Territories (NWT), selected Canadian provinces and international jurisdictions. The study was done as background to a review of royalty regulations for the NWT. ObjectiveThis paper presents results of comparative analysis of effective mining royalty1 rates, and combined effective mining royalty and income tax rates on selected mine models for the Northwest Territories (NWT), with those for several other jurisdictions in Canada and abroad which compete with the NWT for mining investment.BackgroundThe February 27, 1995 federal budget directed the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development (DIAND) to proceed with a comprehensive review and amendments to northern natural resource management legislation in order “to increase revenues and ensure a fair return to the Crown.” DIAND is responsible for the administration of the Territorial Lands Act, and its regulations.The Territorial Lands Act gives the Governor-in-Council the authority to “… make regulations for the leasing of mining rights in, under or on territorial lands and the payment of royalties therefor,…”. In the NWT, the Canada Mining Regulations (CMR) provide for the disposition of mineral rights for most minerals, other than coal, petroleum and related hydrocarbons, in return for the payment of a royalty to the Crown.As part of this review of the NWT mining royalty regime, several computer mine models were developed and tax regimes in a number of jurisdictions were analyzed. Effective mining royalty rates, and the combined effective mining royalty and income tax rates were compared across the jurisdictions. The results presented in this paper are a part of the background work done in preparing a discussion paper on proposed changes to the NWT mining royalty that is expected to be released for public consultation in the very near future."

Heat-shrinkable products were introduced initially for use as low-volt age cable accessories in the aircraft and electronics industry. A program of continuous development and product introduction now enables the manufacturer to offer a broad range of products for mining, industrial and utility electrical systems.With the advent of atomic energy, an important discovery was made-exposure of some plastic materials to high-energy electrons can cause the permanent crosslinking, or intermolecular joining, of adjacent molecules. Once the material has been crosslinked, it will not melt or flow at any temperature.The unique properties of heat-shrinkable products also result from the exposure of special thermoplastic formulations to high-energy electrons. Because of crosslinking, these products have perfect elastic memory. The heat-shrinkable products are supplied in expanded condition. When heated, they will shrink and tightly cover the object over which they have been placed. &apos;The functional and operating demands of mine cable accessories exceeded the classic electronic applications of heat shrinkable materials. Introduction From the earliest times it has been an inherent trait of man to build or create something for his own use or convenience. The need of some form of shelter other than that of the caves led him to bind together stones and other materials to form walls for his abode. Moistened clay which hardened upon drying was no doubt first employed. The Assyrians and Babylonians appear to have employed it or the bitumen found in their country. The early Egyptians and Greeks used some form of lime in their construction work. In addition to these shelters, other structures received attention, and, long before the Roman Empire was established, the Carthaginians made use of a natural cement as binding material. Portions of an aqueduct, seventy miles long, in Northern Africa, built in those early days, are still in use. The Etruscans were the first people in Italy to employ a mortar in their buildings. The Romans, learning the art from the Etruscans, improved the mortar by using a mixture of lime and volcanic ash, called &apos;puzzolan&apos;, and built not only roads but those famous structures, the ruins of many of which exist to this day. The Pantheon at Rome, built by Hadrian about 120 A.D., is perhaps the finest example of the early use of cement in building construction. With the decline of the Roman Empire, the art of making cement seems to have been lost, and for centuries the builders of Europe used only lime mortar. Pure limestones were selected for making the lime and great care was taken in the preparation of the mortar, the supply for one year being made the previous season and left to thoroughly slake or &apos;ripen&apos; in pits covered with earth. The mortar thus produced gave excellent service above ground or where it was exposed to the hardening action of the air, but would not harden under water.

From the perspective of metallurgical processing, gold ores can be classified into freemilling and refractory ores. Their extractive metallurgy is largely driven by mineralogical factors such as gold particle size, association with other minerals, coatings and rimmings, presence of cyanicides, oxygen consumers and preg-robbers, presence of refractory gold minerals, and invisible gold in sulphide and sulpharsenide minerals. Gold process mineralogy helps address issues and problems related to gold ore processing. It is widely used as a predictive and trouble-shooting tool in gold ore processing, and provides useful information on process selection, flowsheet development, recovery improvement, and reagent consumption optimization. By combining classic mineralogical techniques, modern instrumental analysis, and diagnostic metallurgy, the mineralogist is able to balance the various types of gold occurrence in an ore.

"A campaign was undertaken during the greater part of 2001 at Noranda’s Brunswick Mine Concentrator to investigate the role of gas (air) superficial rate distribution (Jg profile) to the cells in the final Zn cleaning stage (bank of seven cells). Three profiles were tested: Balanced (each cell with same Jg), Increasing (from cell 1 to 7), and Decreasing, along with an “as found” profile in a parallel control bank. The experimental design allowed for two confounding factors, changes in ore type and circulating load. The Increasing profile consistently gave the best metallurgy (down-the-bank grade / recovery). The reason for improved performance was traced to the response of the first few cells. The Increasing profile gave the highest selectivity of sphalerite against non-sulphide gangue (NSG) in these cells with relatively even recovery per cell down the bank (10-15% based on feed to each cell). The other profiles gave lower selectivity and higher zinc recovery in the first cells (up to 25% in cell 1), which combined to reduce overall bank performance. The increased selectivity with the Increasing profile is attributed to the low gas rate in the first cells reducing water recovery and hence limiting entrainment of NSG gangue. The Increasing profile was subsequently configured for all four stages in the zinc cleaner circuit.INTRODUCTIONThe performance of a flotation circuit is largely the result of the operator’s response to visual clues. This includes manipulation of the gas (air) input and how it is distributed to cells in a bank. A lack of sensors prescribes this approach. Over the past ten years the Mineral Processing Group at McGill University have developed a set of gas dispersion sensors including one to measure gas superficial rate (or simply “gas rate”), i.e., volumetric gas rate per unit cell crosssectional area, Jg (Gomez and Finch, 2002). The device collects bubbles in a tube immersed in the pulp and infers Jg from the pressure-time curve generated after a valve is closed and air starts to accumulate. The usual units are cm/s. It is robust, reliable and suited for plant use.A version of the Jg sensor was tested extensively during 2000 at Noranda’s Brunswick Mine Concentrator (Dahlke et al., 2001). The results were sufficiently encouraging that a sensor was fabricated to suit local requirements (Insta-Jg). The sensor detected malfunctioning field instruments and flotation mechanisms, and demonstrated that gas distribution to cells in a bank “as found” had no particular pattern, or profile. Preliminary testing suggested that a balanced profile (i.e., all cells with the same gas rate) gave superior metallurgy (grade / recovery down the bank) than the “as found” profile. This observation prompted a focused campaign to explore the impact of the gas rate (Jg) profile, introducing the notion of “gas distribution management”."

In this study, the dissolution behavior of copper and arsenic from five different copper concentrates containing 21-34.7 %wt. of Cu, 1.3-7.3 %wt. of As and 15.6-27.5 %wt. of Fe were investigated under high pressure oxidative leaching conditions. Leaching experiments were conducted using different leaching reagents such as ferric sulfate, sodium chloride, deionized water, sulfuric acid and ferric sulfate-sodium chloride mixture in order to compare the effectiveness of each on the dissolution of copper and arsenic from copper concentrates. The effects of ferric sulfate (0.1-1 mol/L), sodium chloride (0.1-0.5 mol/L) and leaching temperature (100-180C) were investigated under 1 MPa autoclave pressure , particle size >45 m, pulp density of 100 g/L, stirring speed of 750 rpm and leaching time of 60 min. Results showed that the most effective leaching reagents for the dissolution of copper are 0.34 M NaCl and a mixture of 0.1 M Fe2(SO4)3 - 0.34 M NaCl, in which As extraction did not exceed 7%. The copper concentration in the pregnant leach solution obtained after leaching using 0.1 M Fe2(SO4)3 - 0.34 M NaCl was 13-30 g/L, while the concentration of As and Fe were in a range between 0.3-1 g/L and 0.2-10 g/L at 160C. INTRODUCTION Copper sulfide minerals, such as chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), chalcocite (Cu2S) and covellite (CuS) are used for the production of copper in mining and metallurgical industries worldwide. The conventional pyrometallurgical processing followed by electrorefining is a common process for the production of high purity copper (Moskalyk, & Alfantazi, 2003; Padilla, Aracena, & Ruiz, 2012). However, the degradation of copper content and an increase in the amount of metal impurities, especially arsenic (As), antimony (Sb) and bismuth (Bi) in copper concentrates cause serious problems to the production of copper and environmental pollution (Basha, Selvi, Ramasamy, & Chellammal, 2008; Long, Peng, & Bradshaw, 2012). Hydrometallurgical processes are used to recover metals from refractory ores, concentrates and tailings by leaching (Long, Peng, & Bradshaw, 2012; Masloboev, Seleznev, Svetlov, & Makarov, 2018). During the last decades, hydrometallurgical processing for the recovery of copper from enargite-bearing copper ores and concentrates has been extensively investigated due to its relatively more environmentally benign and less capital costs than the conventional pyrometallurgical processes (Long, Peng, & Bradshaw, 2012; Masloboev, Seleznev, Svetlov, & Makarov, 2018; Choubey, Lee, Kim, & Kim 2018). However, several issues facing the hydrometallurgical processing are incomplete extraction of copper associated with the coprecipitation of iron compounds, difficult stabilization of toxic impurities and production of a contaminated copper product (Dreisinger, 2003; Safarzadeh, Moats, & Miller, 2014). Hence, a number of studies have been conducted on the selective dissolution of copper from copper ores and concentrates or selective removal of arsenic leaving a clean copper residue using various leaching reagents or lixiviants (Safarzadeh, Moats, & Miller, 2014; Mihajlovic, Strbac, Zivkovic, Kovacevic, & Stehernic, 2007; Tongamp, Takasaki, & Shibayama, 2009). More extensive studies on the selective extraction of copper from enargite- bearing copper ores and concentrates are much needed to improve copper recovery.

A rough simulated borehole has been developed for the installation and dynamic testing of rock bolts a the WASM Dynamic Test Facility. The rough simulated borehole is used for rock bolts that are sensitive to equipment installation technique or borehole geometry (particularly friction rock stabilisers and resin encapsulated bolts). An extensive axial test program has quantified a difference between the static and dynamic capacity (kN/m of embedment) for friction rock stabilisers once sliding starts. The 47mm split tube bolt has a 50% reduction in embedment capacity (but with significant variation) dissipating 2.7kJ/100mm of sliding per meter of embedment, and the Omega (inflatable) bolt had a 70% reduction in embedment capacity dissipating 6.2kJ/100mm of sliding per meter of embedment. The Omega bolt dynamic capacity remainder at least equivalent to the split tube bolt static capacity.

Coastal and marine mines affect the seabed?s biological resources, eg fisheries, when large volume wastes such as tailings are placed on the seabed, and by the extraction processes from marine mining. Worldwide monitoring of such effects for the past 30+ years now provides information to describe Best Practice design, construction and monitoring procedures. The critical environmental factors for submarine tailings placement (STP) are the selection of an appropriate deposition site and discharge depth, the deposition rate of the tailings, and the speed of biodiversity recovery to a sustainable ecological succession. These should be predictable at new sites using current modeling and experimental procedures. Prediction procedures are still needed to minimize potential destabilization of deposited tailings, and consequent biodiversity recovery setbacks. Comparable environmental information is needed from marine mining sites.
