"MAGNETITE HAS BEEN found in many .parts of the coastal area of British Columbia, but the more important deposits are on Vancouver Island and Texada Island. The locations of these deposits are shown on Figure 1.Interest in the magnetite deposits dates back to the 1870s, when land was acquired on the southwest coast of Texada Island by the Puget Sound Iron Company. This ground included the Prescott, Paxton, and Lake deposits. During the years 1885 to 1903, and 1908, 28,898 tons of magnetite ore was shipped to the company's blast-furnace plant at Irondale, Washington, U.S.A. This production was almost entirely from the Prescott open-pits.In the years following the Texada Island discoveries, other magnetite deposits were found in the coastal area, and various plans were proposed to utilize the local ores in the establishment of a steel industry in the Pacific Northwest. None was carried to fruition but, in 1951, open-pit mining was begun at Iron Hill, Vancouver Island, to furnish iron concentrates for steel mills in Japan. In 1952 mining of the Texada deposits was resumed to supply the same market. Production figures for these recent operations are as follows:"

Magnesium additions to aluminum enhance strength and hardness, lowering density, and improving corrosion resistance. However, during melting and casting processes, significant amounts of magnesium are lost due to selective oxidation. Preventing these losses would reduce the production cost and improve the quality of the final product. The effects of strontium addition on the oxidation behaviour of aluminum-0.5% and 1% magnesium alloys were investigated by monitoring sample weight gains with time with a thermogravimetric balance at 750°C. Sample cross sections have been examined using Field Emission Gun Scanning Electron Microscope.

Multiphase steels are quite sensitive to hydrogen embrittlement. Laboratory tests to evaluate this often use electrochemical, charging to introduce hydrogen into the sample, but damage purely caused by hydrogen charging has to be avoided. A ferrite-bainite steel, was charged using various conditions to identify when surface blisters occurred. Samples were also checked for internal, damage by electron microscopy. This study was repeated for three other multiphase steels and pure iron. An HSLA steel, was found to be more resistant whereas pure iron was quite susceptible to internal, hydrogen damage. For al, industrial, steels, cracks concentrated in the middle of the sample were attributed to inclusions and segregations, inherent to production.

Electronic Product and Process Management [EPPM] systems provide the capability to establish and map information flow between different parties in a construction project as well as model project processes. Much of the information relating to processes and their structure, the actors that operate them, and the data associated with each instance of a process is encapsulated within workflows. The wealth of information contained in an EPPM system can be exploited to extract knowledge that can provide significant cost benefits to construction companies. Workflows provide an ideal medium for the capture of knowledge over the course of a project lifecycle. We demonstrate how this knowledge may then be used to analyze workflows and determine metrics that establish the suitability of workflows to construction processes. We present a conceptual approach to measure the performance of a workflow, its constituent components and evolution, which may be used to lay the foundation for establishing paragon workflows suited to classes of construction activities.

Unknown goafs and roadways of abandoned coalmines can be a great water inrush hazard for coalmine workers. Consequently, advance detection of such hazards is of great importance. By detonating seismic charges in underground coal seams, we can collect seismic data using a surface survey line, which is located across the ground projection of the underground shot point. This experiment was conducted in a coalmine in Shaanxi Province, China. After surface elevation compensation and travel time adjustments, we accurately determined the position of the goaf boundary along the survey line based on the wave velocity anomaly on the seismic record. Then we used a scattered wave imaging technique to enhance the energy of the scattered waves that are generated when the coal seam roof slide wave (refracted wave when the incident angle bigger than the critical angle) hits the roadway, thus confirming location of a geological discontinuity (roadway). This experiment shows that the coalmine ground seismic method, employing an underground explosive charge and a surface seismic array, has the ability to detect an abandoned roadway and goaf in advance of coal mining, thus can improve worker safety.

The EarthProbe DCIP system deploys tightly spaced electrodes connected to a centralized data acquisition system that enables arbitrary selection of current and potential electrodes through relays. Rapid data collection (approximately 1000 readings per hour) and advanced signal processing allow for efficient use of conventional and novel arrays and the removal of natural and cultural noise. What is unique about the system is its electrode and borehole cable design, which allows seamless integration of borehole and surface measurements. EarthProbe operates in four configurations - surface, borehole, borehole-to-borehole, and surface-to-borehole (a variant of the borehole-to-borehole configuration).

The Badgeley Island quartzite deposir in Georgian Bay is worked by lndusmin Limired and was developed in 1969 to produce a high-qualiry silica for use in rhe ferrosilicon and glass industries. The quartzire is part of the Precambrian Bar River Formarion, and is a generally whire, fine-grained rock containing rhin sericire seams. Primary sedimenrary features wirhin the deposit are bedding and ripple marks. Amphibolite and diabase dykes cur the quarr zire body.

The development of the Gubin lignite deposit, located in western Poland is the first mining investment of this magnitude in 30 years. Gubin is the second largest prospective lignite deposit in Poland, with over one billion tonnes of indicated reserves, which would be sufficient for a 2700 MW power plant for almost 50 years. The paper presents select problems related to the mining development of Gubin deposit. Attention has been paid to changes in legal and formal requirements for mining investments that were introduced after the change of Polish social and economic system. The significance of spatial, environmental and social conditionings has been emphasized. Typical attributes of the mine planning process have also been presented. Those include the long time horizon of the investment, uncertainty of external conditions and resulting difficulties in the project?s economic evaluation. Focus has been placed on mutual connections between particular elements of the project and time dependence during the process of their development. Iterative characteristics of the design process have been proven, together with resulting necessity of frequent verification of previous assumptions. As a background for presenting selected problems related to future development of Gubin lignite deposit, the methods of design have been discussed ? the variants method, the empirical method and the method of consecutive approximations. The tools and the possibilities of their use for solving specific problems related to mine design of an open pit have been broadly discussed. The chapter in which the authors relate to the specific problems of Gubin deposit development constitutes the main part of the paper. It depicts the assumptions on which the annual production and the total extraction of lignite during life-of-mine period have been based. The process of mine designing has been discussed, taking into consideration environmental, geotechnical, spatial, social and mining conditions. The criteria for choosing the location of the opening cut and the external dump have been mentioned. In the summary, the present state of mine design progress has been presented, together with some problems that will need to be solved during the next stages of the deposit?s development.

"Impact energy absorbing system for automotive is an important technology. Open-cell porous aluminum alloys were manufactured through Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) process. Compressive properties of the porous aluminum alloy depend on the cell structure as well as the porosity. The authors manufactured two ordered cell structures, truncated octahedron and rhombic dodecahedron, and one disordered cell structure, random Voronoi structure using a 3D-CAD software. Compression tests revealed the anisotropic deformation of the porous aluminum alloy with ordered cell structure. On the other hand, the porous aluminum alloy with disordered cell structure showed relatively isotropic and uniform deformation, which is suitable for energy absorbing applications. Therefore, controlling the disordered cell structure designed by Voronoi diagram enables to develop the advanced porous aluminum alloy having various mechanical properties.INTRODUCTIONAdditive manufacturing (AM) process enables to manufacture near net-shape mechanical parts. The AM technology is typically focused on titanium alloys due to their high specific strength and biocompatibility (Attar, 2014). Recently, aluminum alloy parts can be manufactured through selective laser melting method (Leary, 2016). Metal foams or porous metals are lightweight cellular materials having closed-or open-cell structures (Banhart, 2001). Aluminum foams are focused on as an energy absorbing material for transport industries (Baumeister, 1997). The purpose of the present study is to investigate the optimal cell structure of open-cell porous aluminum alloy manufactured through AM process. Most previous researches on the AM aluminum lattice structure has been considered ordered and periodic cell structures. On the other hand, classical aluminum foams manufactured through cast or powder metallurgical processes have disordered and heterogeneous cell structures (Körner, 2000). The authors use a concept of Voronoi diagram (Moukarzel, 1993) in order to manufacture various cell structures."

Fine refuse slurry impoundment is a requirement for the coal industry to dispose the fines. Impoundment maintenance is an on going problem for the coal industry and its breakage creates environmental as well as financial problems. Deep Cone thickener technology which has been successfully applied in the alumina industry to dewater red mud was evaluated for fine refuse slurry. Preliminary obtained in a pilot-plant test showed that properly flocculated conventional thickener underflow slurry could be thickened to about 52.5 wt % solids and could replace belt filter press. The Deep Cone thickener was also found to dewater clean coal slurry to about 70 wt % solids. Further testing of the unit at other coal preparation plant is in progress.

"AMAG investigated different aspects to improve the resistance against grain coarsening in aerospace alloys during recrystallization and was successful in finding several opportunities to minimize this effect. The studies show that one aspect to counteract grain coarsening is the chemical composition and subsequently all phases that are formed during homogenization. Starting with a fine grain (~ 50 µm) can lead to a final grain size of few mm. On the other hand with a coarse initial grain size (approximately 150 µm) and the right chemical composition the grain size can stay almost constant despite different deformation steps. Additional we investigated different sequences for the component production to eliminate the problem of grain coarsening as a coarse grain has a detrimental effect on product performance.INTRODUCTION In the aircraft industry, aluminium sheets are most commonly deformed in their soft state, followed by solution heat treatment and natural or artificial aging. If the preceding deformation is in a critical amount, during the recrystallization at solution heat treatment grain coarsening can occur. A subsequent deformation to this condition leads to an orange peel surface, which requires additional polishing. Next to this extra effort the coarse grain size produces a drop in the mechanical properties, often below specification limits. If there is no subsequent deformation, this effect is not visible and without destructive testing there is no possibility to detect the error. As mentioned before, this effect occurs during recrystallization, which is a process that is driven by the stored energy in the microstructure. The two most important aspects for an increase of the stored energy are the increase of the grain boundaries fraction (smaller grain size) and the increase of the dislocation density caused by deformation. The increase in dislocation density during the deformation arise from trapping of existing dislocations and from the generation of new dislocations. In December 1994, Polaris decided to investigate the use of cemented rockfill (CRF) to supplement the existing frozen rockfill system. Extraction plans for the remaining ore reserves required a backfill with superior stiffness proper-ties and capable of developing high early strengths. Although CRF has been used success-fully at several mining operations, there was the additional challenge of making a reliable cemented product in permafrost conditions. There was also the challenge of procuring and storing one year’s supply (13 000 tonnes) of bulk cement. By the spring of 1995, following three months of research, test work and process design, the decision was made to proceed with the procurement and construction of a 3000 tpd batch plant. An ambitious completion date of December 1995 was set. Team Manufacturing of Langley, British Columbia was awarded the contract, complete with the considerable task of having the batch plant fabricated and ready for sea lift shipment by August, 1995.

"In this study, hardness test, differential scanning calorimetry(DSC)and transmission electron micros copy were carried out to investigate the age-hardening behavior of Al-Mg-Si alloy with a Mg+Si concentration of 1.5mass%, and a Mg/Si ratio of 1.0. Pre-aging treatment was conducted for the solution-treated and then water-quenched specimen at 100, 80, 60, 40, 20 (natural aging), 0 and -20°C for 20min or 5h, followed by artificial aging at 170°C for 20min. It was found that when pre-aging time is prolonged from 20min to 5h, the bake-hardening response is deteriorated irrespective of the pre-aging temperature. In particular, the specimens subjected to pre-aging at 20-40°C for 5 h hardly increased the hardness with the subsequent artificial aging. From the results of DSC measurement, it was suggested that as pre-aging temperature is lowered, the amount of solute clusters formed during pre-aging, i.e. Mg-Si clusters and Si-rich clusters, is decreased, but the ratio of Si-rich clusters is increased, resulting in the deteriorated bake-hardening response.INTRODUCTIONIn recent years, Al-Mg-Si alloys have been widely used forautomotive body panels due to their excellent characteristics such as high strength-to-weight ratio and good formability. Their strength is increased not only by artificial aging during paint-bake treatment; i.e. “bake-hardening”, but also when kept at room temperature(RT);i.e. “natural aging”, in association with the suppressed bake-hardening response. Such a “negative effect of two-step aging” has been a serious problem because Al-Mg-Si alloy coils are unavoidably maintained at RT in the manufacturing process of body panels; e.g. shipping and storage. However, it was reported that pre-aging above 70°C before the two-step aging can restore the bake-hardening response, and such an improvement is related to the formation of solute clusters(Sato, 2006; Abidet al., 2010; Takaki et al., 2014; Zandbergen et al., 2015). From the comprehensive analysis by three-dimensional atom probe (Aruga et al., 2014 and 2015), it is believed that Mg-Si clusters formed during pre-aging transform into the strengtheningß"" phase, whereas Si-rich clusters formed during pre-aging act as a detrimental precursor of ß""phase. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the effect of pre-aging conditions, especially pre-aging temperature and time, on the formation of solute clusters during pre-aging, in order to elucidate the mechanism of the age-hardening behavior of an Al-Mg-Si alloy."

"Flotation is possible when the forces operating between a bubble and the attached particle are properly balanced. There are many forces operating in the bubble-particle aggregate. The magnitude, location and direction of the forces depend on the type of process. The simplest arrangement in flotation is when a spherical bubble is attached to a spherical particle and both are immersed in water. In such a system there are four essential forces which shape the stability of the bubble-particle aggregate. They are excess pressure and interfacial solid/liquid, solid/gas and liquid/gas forces. A proper analysis and balance of the size, location and direction of these four principal forces lead to a general equation delineating the stability of the spherical particle–attached bubble system. Specific cross sections of the system and solution of the general equation lead to different relationships including the Young formula as well as the well-known geometrical relation between contact angle, particle and bubble radiuses. The arrangement of forces in the proposed graphical representation of the Young law is different from that presently used in literature for a bubble attached to an unmovable solid particle. Many real solid/liquid/gas systems are more complex due to the presence of additional forces which change the regular curvature of the liquid/gas interface leading to advancing and receding contact angles.INTRODUCTIONThere are numerous papers (Athukorallage, Aulisa, Iyer & Zhang, 2015; Chau, Bruckard, Koh & Nguyen, 2009; Drzymala, 1994; Lubarda, 2012; Pellicer, Manzanares & Mafe, 1995; Wang, Cui, Zhou, Xu, Sun, & Zhu, 2014; Young, 1804) and books (Davies & Rideal, 1963; Defay & Prigogine, 1966; Lee, 2013; Lyklema, 2000) dealing with the solid/liquid/gas system. Many of them concern the three involved phases having the shape of a sphere or spherical cap and the formed contact angle. The contact angle is usually measured through the liquid phase and can be either smaller or greater than 90o. The essential part of these publications is a graphical representation of the system with the Young equation shown as a result of balance of only three forces that is the excess Gibbs (or Helmholz) free energy per unit area of the three involved interfaces (Davies & Rideal, 1963; Defay & Prigogine, 1966; Israelachvili, 1985) (Figs. 1a-c). "The occurrence of recrystallization in cold-worked aluminum sheet during the brazing process leads to loss of strength, an inhomogeneous grain structure and reduced corrosion resistance. AlMgScZr alloys are known for their extraordinary recrystallization resistance due to the influence of Sc and Zr addition on their microstructure. Here, we investigate the effect of alloy composition (i.e. Mn, Mg, Sc, Zr content), cold-roll reduction and pre-aging treatment on the recrystallization behavior of cold-rolled sheets at brazing temperatures typically used during the manufacture of heat exchanger units. The analysis of recrystallization behavior is carried out through microstructural characterization and the results are compared with the behavior of a commercial, AA3xxx-based heat exchanger alloy.INTRODUCTION Control of recrystallization is of critical importance during brazing, which is a widely-used joining technique for aluminum alloys in aircraft structures (Heinz, 2000) and automotive heat exchangers (Miller, 2000; Marshall, 1993). Due to excessive local heat at brazing temperatures, the cold work texture of aluminum alloys in the cold-rolled sheets may undergo a local recrystallization process (Marshall, 1993). This leads to the formation of an inhomogeneous microstructure and thus anisotropic mechanical properties (Miller, 2000) and low corrosion resistance (Marshall, 1993) across the sheet. X800, a commonly-used Al-Mn alloy series for automotive heat exchangers applications, has been developed specifically for a higher strength as well as an enhanced corrosion resistance as opposed to the traditionally-used AA3003 alloy (Marshall, 1993). X800 alloys, however, exhibit a low recrystallization resistance at normal brazing temperatures, i.e. 590°C. In contrast, Al-Sc-Zr alloys have been shown to exhibit an extraordinary recrystallization resistance at such temperatures (Riddle, 2004) while also being corrosion resistant and possessing a high room-temperature strength (Fuller, 2002). This has been shown to be due to the formation of coherent, nanoscale Al3(ScZr) precipitates that effectively impede grain boundaries while also exhibiting very slow coarsening kinetics at high temperatures (Riddle, 2004; Jones, 2003; Ocenasek, 2001). In this study, we analyze the recrystallization behavior of X800 alloys under brazing conditions through introducing Sc and Zr into the system as well as varying the Mn and Mg content. The effect of processing route is also studied by introducing a pre-aging stabilization treatment as well as varying the cold-roll reduction prior to the final brazing anneal."

Most magnesium alloy sheets show low deformability in rolling. Edge cracks and transverse fractures are common difficulties. In addition, rolled sheets show well-developed basal texture <0001>//ND. The texture causes high anisotropy in mechanical properties and low formability in subsequent metal forming. Differential-speed rolling, where the upper and the lower rolls rotate at different speeds, introduces shear deformation through the thickness. Not rolling texture but shear texture evolves in the sheet so that the asymmetric rolling can be a method of texture control. However the primary slip system of the hcp alloy, is basal, the shear texture should be also basal. Differences between the two basal textures, i.e., the rolling texture and the shear texture, have not been understood completely. In this study, conventional (same-speed) rolling and differential-speed rolling have been applied to commercial AZ31B sheets at 623K. Microstructures, textures and mechanical properties of the rolled sheets before/after annealing are compared. It is found that the basal texture is more pronounced by the asymmetric rolling. On the other hand, the asymmetric rolling is effective to decrease the grain size and the planar anisotropy.

"TioMin Resources Inc. is evaluating the feasibility of exploiting the heavy mineral sands deposit at Natashquan on the north shore of the Gulf of St-Lawrence, Quebec. TioMin holds the exploration rights to 180 square kilometres, on which 1.6 billion tonnes of sands grading approximately 6% heavy minerals were outlined. The heavy minerals of value include magnetite, ilmenite/hematite, garnet, and zircon. An important part of this evaluation is the development and testing of a mineral separation flowsheet. Under a comprehensive mandate from TioMin, the Centre de recherches minerales (CRM) provided technical assistance to build and operate an on site primary concentrator pilot plant. This plant produced a 93 tonne concentrate, providing over 60 % heavy minerals. This concentrate was shipped to the CRM pilot plant in Quebec City. It was used for further flowsheet testing and for preparation of products and concentrates of heavy minerals with regard to marketing possibilities. This paper presents the flowsheet developed to produce these concentrates.IntroductionIn late 1992, an 11 tonne bulk sample of sand was collected from within the mineralized zone of the Natashquan deposit. This sample was processed over conventional spirals and wet tables at the pilot plant facilities of the Centre de recherches minerales (CRM) in Quebec City. A primary concentrate was produced, from which several 20 kg samples were forwarded to five research laboratories in North America and in Australia. Their tasks were to determine the mineralogical composition of this concentrate and the potential for recovery of marketable minerals from the heavy mineral sands. Satisfactory results obtained from this approach encouraged TioMin to proceed with a more detailed pilot plant program."

"IntroductionRocks in the Kirkland Lake district form part of the Timiskaming Group, a south-facing homoclinal sequence of wackes, conglomerate, trachytic flows and pyroclastic rocks and syenitic intrusive rocks. Hewitt (1963) indicates that the thickest section, about 5 km, of the Timiskaming Group rocks is attained in Lebel Township. Several writers (Thomson, 1948; Hewitt, 1963; Hyde, 1978; Jensen, 1978; and Downes, 1979) have observed that the Timiskaming Group unconformably overlies the Keewatin volcanics, particularly along the northern contact. Recent work by Downes (1979) in McGarry and McVittie townships to the east of Kirkland Lake has shown that much of what had formerly been classified as Timiskaming actually belongs to an older group of rocks, the Larder Lake Group (Jensen 1978).General GeologyA series of fluviatile, braided-stream sedimentary rocks (Hyde, 1978) form the oldest of the three major rock suites at Kirkland Lake. Conglomerates constitute a large proportion of these sedimentary rocks and typically contain a large percentage of a variety of locally derived alkalic rock clasts as well as the distinctive red jasper iron-formation pebbles (Fig. 1a). The associated wacke units can be massive to finely bedded and are interbedded with the conglomerate. They also contain a large alkalic tuffaceous component.Interbedded with these sedimentary rocks are alkalic extrusive rocks, including tuffs, agglomerates, breccias and flows, which represent episodes of fissure and explosive crater eruption (Cooke and Moorhouse, 1969). The tuffs, although dominantly alkalic in composition, are commonly reworked and contain sedimentary features such as graded bedding, scouring and crossbedding (Fig. 1 b). The trachytic flows are massive to porphyritic and outcrop mainly east of Kirkland Lake in the adjoining townships. Altered leucitic porphyritic flows, locally referred to as red and green spotted trachytes, commonly occur."

Mining induced ground movement and/or stress redistribution could cause ground instability issues. This is particularly true when the extraction of large stopes is done with one or two large production blasts. Often enough, it is the nearby mine development like haulage drifts and cross cuts that are influenced the most by production blasts. Proper and timely mitigation of ground control issues due to stress redistribution is required. This is usually done by drift rehabilitation involving the installation of secondary support system in the affected areas of the mine development which include; slashing, wire mesh, and in some cases the use of shotcrete liners. It is imperative that such rehabilitation be implemented to the mine infrastructure in a timely manner in order to avoid aggravated ground control problems and production delays. If the real time performance of the support system is captured, it would be possible to determine the timing for rehabilitation job. Birchtree Mine in Thompson, at the Vale Manitoba Operation, has begun mining the 84 Deep Orebody. One of the identified risks is the stability of the crusher room under mining induced stress redistribution. It is proposed to use the U-Cell technology to monitor the primary support system performance (rebar bolts and extension bolts) and monitor the real time performances of the bolt axial loads. The U-Cell technology is a 7-inch long, coupler load cell that is screwed onto the threaded portion of a rock bolt prior to installation. Rehabilitation in the vicinity of the crusher area where U-Cells are installed is recommended when the bolts have reached 70% of their yielding capacity. Catastrophic ground failure can be avoided by adding secondary support in a timely fashion. This paper presents a case study at Birchtree Mine in Thompson Manitoba, where the performance of primary ground support system is monitored and recorded during production.
