Direct observation of charge shape and its motion in industrial mills is not possible; therefore, a combination of analytical and physical studies is used to determine charge trajectory. Software packages, which predict charge motion consider only the outermost layer of charge (single ball) and ignore the charge and the interactions of grinding elements. In the new version of the GMT (Grinding Media Trajectory) software, the effect of liners specification and bulk load on charge shape and trajectory are considered. The charge trajectory was measured in a laboratory mill with the diameter of 100 cm and length of 21.5 cm with the transparent end and compared with that of the old version of GMT. Four types of polyurethane rings were accurately machined to scale down the liners arrangements at two industrial mills. The model mill was operated at 55, 70 and 85% of the critical speed for five levels of mill filling (10, 15, 20, 25% and 30% by volume). The experiments indicated that the end walls effect was negligible for the model mill with the length of 10.8 cm and beyond. The proposed relationships to correct the trajectory and charge shape were validated by using the new liner of the Gol-E-Gohar iron ore company AG mill. The positions of shoulder, toe, toe departure and impact points were predicted with the relative errors of 5, 0.7, 2 and 0.2%, respectively. The GMT software was updated with the new relationships. The results of GMT simulation indicated that when the lifter face angle increased from 7 to 30°, the distance between the charge impact point and the toe decreased from 40.1 to 11.2° for 30% filling. The change in the position of the impact point meant increasing the probability of charge impacting the toe, not the liner which favored more efficient comminution practice.

Natural hazards such as rock bumps, methane, coal dust explosions, airborne respirable dust, outbursts of gas and rocks, water, radiation caused by natural radioactive materials, spontaneous fires, and climatic hazards, occurring in the Polish hard coal mines, should be controlled. These hazards are characterized by different scale levels numbered from 2?5. To recognize the amount and levels of hazards, research works were carried out in 109 mining districts of mines belonging to Jastrzebska Spólka Weglowa, Katowicki Holding Weglowy and Kompania Weglowa. These are 86 % of all mines and could be regarded as representative of the majority of Polish mining. The hazards have been classified as regards the frequency of their occurrence as: commonly occurring ? with a frequency of 100 % (like airborne respirable dust and fire hazards), high occurrence frequency ? frequency from 60 to below 100 % (methane hazard ? 83.5 %, coal dust explosion hazard ? 92.0 %, and water hazard ? 99.1 %), medium occurrence frequency ? from 30 to below 60 % (rock-bump hazard ? 52.3 % and climatic hazards ? 51.4 %), and episodic occurrence frequency ? below 30 % (outburst of gas and rocks and radioactive hazards). The dynamics of effects of growth in hazard levels to their intolerable values is diverse. Some of them are passive in nature, which allows for longer observation of changes and appropriate early response (as for climatic and spontaneous fire hazards). However the majority of them take on the character of disasters, like methane or coal dust explosions and damage of the excavation structure ? as occurs after a rock-bump or rock outburst; and creation of an atmosphere unfit for breathing ? during open or spontaneous fires, or after gas outbursts containing methane. There are also latent hazards whose effects do not influence indeed a process of production; however they are detrimental to health when a worker is exposed for a long time to airborne respirable dust and radiation. For other types of hazards a level of danger may be only estimated. Since the systems monitoring allows a wider range of control, therefore, aside from rock-bump and methane hazards, there are monitored also fire hazards including measurements of other air parameters (velocity, pressure, humidity, temperature, O2, CO2 concentration). A few types of monitoring systems are used in Polish mines, like the monitoring systems for environmental parameters such as SMP-NT, SMP-NT/A, the telemetric systems CST-40, CST/A, including the computer-aided system for methanometry control officer SWµP, the computer-aided measuring systems KSP-1, KSP-2, KSP-2C, or the production and safety control system VENTURON. The underground part of the systems monitoring of natural hazards contains measuring devices and equipment for automatic control (power-off) of machines and electric devices in case of increased methane hazard. The surface part of the monitoring system allows the measuring data to be visualized and pre-alarm (warning) and alarm states to be displayed. Furthermore it makes it possible to archive and report the data and to control the underground supply and signalling devices. The EMAG Institute developed monitoring methods to extend a measuring range of monitored parameters (such as methane and fire hazards) as well as to monitor so far unmonitored hazards like dust hazards (by continuous monitoring of dust levels in mine air) and climatic hazards (by online monitoring climatic parameters of mine air).

Dissociative adsorption of hydrogen (deuterium) on thin gold films grown on Ir{111} surface has been studied with temperature-programmed desorption using a quadrupole mass spectrometer and nuclear reaction analysis. Thin Au{111} films are epitaxially grown on Ir{111}. Surprisingly, H2 (D2) can dissociatively adsorb on these Au{111} films, although it is well known that Au surfaces are noble enough not to dissociate hydrogen molecules [B. Hammer and J.K. Nørskov, Nature 376, (1995) 238]. We attribute this to the sensitivity of hydrogen to changes in the local surface properties, e.g., electron localization (the narrowing of the s-band, the s-band center model), which could explain the upto now unexpected high for the reactivity of a thin Au{111} surface. Moreover, we found that H (D) atoms can be confined into a Au thin film and/or the interface between an Ir surface and the thin Au film. We demonstrate how anomalously reactive thin Au films grown on an Ir surface are, and also compare the Au films with Ag films grown on Ir to test the validity/generality of our proposed s-band center model.

"Abstract - The Las Cañas stratabound Pb-Zn deposit, in northern Chile, is hosted by the Lower Cretaceous back-arc marine carbonate and subordinate andesitic volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks of the Chañarcillo Group, one hundred meters above a thick pile of magmatic arc-related basaltic to andesitic lavas of the Bandurrias Formation. The deposit is not obviously related to local intrusive rocks, which include an Upper Cretaceous granodiorite batholith and dacite dikes emplaced along normal faults. Stratabound Pb-Zn-Ba mineralization is constrained within several porous stratigraphic units, including a 50 cm thick lapilli-tuff and less well mineralized algal-laminated limestone. Veins that locally carry some Pb-Zn occur along normal faults that displace the stratabound orebodies, and this study shows that they represent a different type of mineralization.Fluid inclusion microthermometric data for ore-stage quartz and barite indicate saline fluids (6 to 30 wt% NaCleq) and a formation temperature in the range of 80°C to 160°C for the stratabound mineralization. Two types of fluid inclusions occur in the veins. The type I vein fluid inclusions indicate less saline (average 7 wt% NaCleq) and slightly higher temperature fluids, in the range of 110°C to 220°C. The type II vein fluid inclusions indicate highly saline fluids (25 to 40 wt% NaCleq) which might be related to minor copper mineralization.206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb and 208Pb/204Pb ratios for galenas from the stratabound mineralization, with mean values of 18.42, 15.59, and 38.25, respectively, fall within the range of stratabound polymetallic deposits of northern and central Chile, and indicate a Lower Cretaceous magmatic rock source. Galenas from veins have slightly more radiogenic 206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb and 208Pb/204Pb ratios, with mean values of 18.47, 15.61, and 38.34, suggesting two distinct episodes of mineralization.?34S values for galena and barite range from negative values (-31.2‰ to -12.5‰ and -7.7‰ to +12‰, respectively) in the mineralized tuff to higher values in the algal-laminated limestone (-2.5‰ to +1.2‰ and +13.2‰ to +17.4‰, respectively), close to Lower Cretaceous marine sulfate values for barite, and homogeneous values for the galena from veins (-12.0‰ ±1‰). Changing redox conditions can partly account for ?34S variations in the tuff. Sulfur sources include magmatic rock sulfur (-1.5‰ to +9.7‰) as well as sedimentary sulfides and marine sulfate."

"The removal of iron asgoethite from the high iron bearing solutions generated in zinc hydrometallurgy using a strong airflow device was investigated. The influence of oxygen flow, copper ion concentration, temperature and reaction time on iron precipitation as goethite was studied. The optimum conditions were: oxygen flow 0.2-0.35m3/h, copper ion concentration 0.25-0.5g/L, temperature 80-90oC, zinc oxide powder neutralizing agent and a reaction time of5to 7hours. Under the optimal conditions, the Fe2+concentration was reduced to 0.025g/L after iron precipitation, and the goethite residue contained 38.7wt.%Fe. The SEM and XRD analyses showed that the iron was present as well formed FeOOH crystals in the iron residue, and the amount of iron sulphate was very low. Production practice shows that, when the average iron concentration in the feed solution was 11.61g/L and 4.08g/L after precipitation, the weight of iron removed was 1,439kg/day. When the average iron concentration in the feed solution was 14.51g/L and 2.73g/L after precipitation, the weight of iron removed was 2,454kg/day. This represents a ~70 percent increase in iron removal.INTRODUCTIONThe objective of iron removal is to produce a small volume of iron residue, and our industrial goethite process meets this requirement. The high Fe(II) solution in our reactor isoxidized/hydrolyzed to precipitate goethite and the precipitate is sent to a pyro metallurgical furnace for final residue treatment. Some literature discusses (DengYong-guiet al., 2008;Meiguang-guiet al., 2001;Zhongzhu-qianet al., 1980) research on iron hydrolysis; one of the reported rate limiting parameters was the low availability of the oxidant when using air and another was the inhomogeneous air distribution. There are two iron hydrolysis-goethite precipitation methods; the Electrolytic Zinc process (EZ) and the Vieille Montagne process (VM) (Lei Xiang, 2006; Xuguo-qiang, 2007;ZhaoYonget al.,2005). The EZ method hydrolyzes the Fe3+directly to FeOOH. The weakness of the EZ process is the low recovery rate of the associated minor metals. The VM method reduces the iron to the ferrous state and then oxidizes the Fe(II)to Fe(III),with simultaneous hydrolysis/precipitation of the Fe(III) as FeOOH. Before iron hydrolysis, the minor metals, such as indium, could be selectively precipitated, because Fe(II)requires a high pH for hydrolysis. The selection and provision of mineralogical services to assist in developing a GeoMetallurgical program for a Cu Porphyry Mine in South America is covered in this paper and presentation. The objectives of the study were to provide a rapid mineralogical scoping protocol to support and confirm results of sequential Cu leach data and to provide detailed mineralogical analysis of four composites and products on which locked cycle test-work were performed. Results showed good reconciliation was achieved between measured chalcopyrite and secondary Cu mineral contents with leach data using a linear intercept mineralogical procedure by TIMA (Tescan Integrated Mineral Analyser), as well as a generally positive correlation between pyrite and Cu-sulphide grain size. Size-by-size analysis of Composite feeds and test products was used to outline comparisons between feeds on a mineralogical basis and provide liberation and association data with which to diagnose and better explain performance. Identifying key mineralogical drivers to Cu recovery and concentrate grades using these results, a greater understanding of the role of chalcocite and pyrite on metallurgical performance was established. INTRODUCTION As a global supply of copper, porphyry copper deposits are typically very large, often in excess of a billion tons of ore (Keeney, Walters, & Kojovic, 2011; McMillan & Panteleyev, 1980) with grades typically between 0.2 and 1.2% Cu, and up to 2% Cu in places. They are also a source of gold. The complexity of copper porphyries arises from their classically zoned nature, the type of host rock, as well as whether or not they have been overprinted by oxidation, weathering and supergene enrichment (Sillitoe, 2011). Zones of alteration and other geological attributes give rise to varied mineralogy, ore mineral textures and material properties, all of which result in different processing characteristics. Due to the interdependencies of geological and processing characteristics, it is vital to study links between the geology at the macro-scale and mineralogical features down to millimeter and micrometer scale (mineral content and texture) and their influences on mineral processing behaviour (Cropp, Goodall, & Bradshaw, 2013). The growing field of GeoMetallurgy aims to provide an Orebody Knowledge framework by which to gather such information as it pertains to: (1) Understanding and predicting likely flotation response; (2) Guiding relevant test work to investigate and validate links, interdependencies, theories and data interpretation/evaluation; (3) Populate a block model with relevant information and; (4) Implement and refine the model for ongoing optimization and control. Specific questions addressed by using mineralogy often include flotation diagnostics as aids to interpretation, causes of dilution and losses to tailings, as well as guidance to sampling for test work (Cropp et al., 2013).

Mechanical cells are the dominant unit operation in base metal rougher flotation applications worldwide. As economic demand for metals increase, and as the feasible ore grades decrease, the installed capacity of mechanical flotation units worldwide has greatly increased, adding significant capital and operating cost. One opportunity to improve this situation is to use fundamental knowledge to make the industrial flotation process more efficient. A key insight is that the flotation process can be optimized by dividing the processing of the pulp into two distinct fluidic environments; a collection cell where air and pulp mix in a highly energetic compartment, and a low energy gravity separation cell. This is the basis of the “2-stage flotation device” that has been patented by Eriez and marketed under the tradename StackCell™. Two industrial case studies will be presented to highlight the potential metallurgical and commercial advantages of the StackCell. In the first, a train consisting of three pilot scale StackCells (each 0.6 metre diameter) was run in parallel with a train of conventional mechanical cells in a major copper concentrator and benchmarked against a batch Denver test. In the second, the performance of a 3 metre diameter StackCell in a nickel sulfide cleaning application was benchmarked against a batch Denver test. The flotation kinetics observed in the StackCells were 2.4 to 2.9 times faster when compared with the lab Denver test. In the first case study, the kinetics of the StackCell was about six times faster than conventional mechanical cells. It is hypothesized that the efficiency improvement in kinetics is because of reduced “drop-back” during the froth recovery phase, which is reduced because of the reduction in the shear that is present in a conventional mechanical tank cell. This result suggests that a 2-stage flotation system can be used to reduce the working volume of flotation units by five to six times. This would allow operators to significantly reduce the size of their flotation lines for a comparable flotation objective. Some discussion will follow about the scale-up criteria, maintenance and operability issues, comparisons of layout, and possible cost savings. INTRODUCTION The solution that most equipment suppliers have offered to reduce the cost of mechanical flotation equipment over the last 30 years has been to increase the size of the flotation unit cell (Mankosa, 2017). For example, three 100 m3 machines with three smaller motors, mechanisms and control valves could be replaced with a geometrically similar 300 m3 with a larger version of each ancillary component. While there are some efficiencies and cost improvements to be gained by this approach, it does not take advantage of fundamental insights into the flotation process, and it does not represent a step-change in terms of process design or economic benefit for the customer. The advantage of the “bigger is better” approach is that there is past experience of incremental improvements by making cells larger and there is a well-established scale-up method, which allows practitioners to estimate equipment capital costs based on very simple laboratory test- work. A different paradigm, which is gaining interest rapidly is to use a unit operation in which it is easier to optimize the flotation process, which will be described in this paper. This approach is often referred to “2- stage flotation”. Because this approach is new, it is important to benchmark it against existing conventional technology and to demonstrate a robust methodology for sizing equipment and flowsheets. This paper aims to address these issues with two case studies.

"Areas of bubble contact were delineated for cassiterite in the presence of chloride, fluoride, sulphate, phosphate, oxalate and citrate ions using dodecylamine hydrochloride collector. The limits of pH, and the minimum collector concentration were established using the bubble pick-up technique.Bubble contact did not occur below the p.z.c. (point of zero charge), estimated to be 4.7, in the presence of chloride ion, and fluoride ion showed only a weak response in the same pH range. These anions are considered to act as indifferent electrolytes. Activation at pH values below the p.z.c. was obtained with sulphate, phosphate, oxalate and citrate ions; the greatest response was by oxalate and phosphate ions extending pick-up to between pH 2.0 and 2.5.Activation appeared to be strongest when anionic protonated species were in maximum concentration. Strong activation also corresponded to the formation of very stable metal ion species, thought to be formed on the surface of cassiterite, between exposed stannic ions and modifying anions; dodecylammonium ions being absorbed on the surface so modified."

Mineralogical investigations in connection with gold metallurgy are usually performed to find the reason for poor recoveries by cyanidation or by other leaching techniques. Poor recoveries most commonly are obtained when (I) native gold is encapsulated in an insoluble mineral as "invisible gold"; (2) native gold is coated with a precipitate; (3) gold-bearing products are insoluble in cyanide solutions; (4) carbonaceous material in the ore adsorbs gold; and (5) associated minerals decompose and consume cyanide. Samples of refractory material quite often have low gold tenors. It is difficult to find the gold-bearing minerals in such samples with an optical microscope because the probability of finding trace minerals in samples is small. The probability decreases with decreasing grain size of the gold-bearing mineral and with decreas¬ing gold tenor of the sample. Techniques have been developed to increase the success rate of finding gold grains; some are (1) concentrating heavy minerals; (2) preparing special polished sections; (3) searching with an image analyzer; and (4) dissolving associate silicate and sulphide minerals.

In recent years, high performance thermoplastic composites such as PEEK and PEKK have been developed for aerospace applications. These materials offer, among the other properties, high toughness and damage tolerances. These are semi-crystalline materials and their processing can lead to different crystallinity that in turn have some impact on the final properties. The effect of cooling rate on degree of crystallinity of PEEK is studied to identify the processing window for manufacturing. Samples were heated at the constant heating rate of 20°C/min up to 375°C (above melting point) and held for 10 minute. The enthalpy of the crystallization was measured at different constant cooling rates of 0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 30, and 40°C/min. After cooling, the samples were heated at constant heating rate of 2°C/min using modulated DSC. At temperature between 90°C to 375°C, two endotherm peaks were observed. Results suggest that endotherm peaks are related to a melting and recrystallization phenomenon of one crystal morphology. However, the second endotherm peak could be associated with another crystal structure or morphology.

It is well known that the refinement of grain size in metals leads to a significant improvement in important mechanical properties. As part of a European collaborative project, processing schedules have been investigated aimed at producing a homogeneous ultra-fine ferrite and spheroidised carbide aggregate microstructure structure in high carbon (CMn) steels (0.6-1.2wt%C), via conventional 'warm' rolling and innovative Equal Channel Angular Extrusion (ECAE). Suitable deformation schedules were determined from dilatometry and thermo-mechanical Gleeble simulations. Evidence of an ultra-fine ferrite and carbide aggregate microstructure following 'warm' rolling is given. A significant improvement in tensile strength, particularly proof stress (0.2%) was also noted in comparison to material deformed at higher temperatures. Concurrent Equal Channel Angular Extrusion (ECAE) experiments investigated microstructural evolution with incremental strain. Extensive analysis was carried out using various techniques, including high resolution Electron Back Scattered Diffraction (EBSD). Evidence of ferrite grain refinement was noted in a eutectoid composition steel. A sub-micron ferrite structure was observed following high strains (E-3.33) and the mechanical properties exhibit a marked increase in tensile strength.

The Corbet deposit is one of 17 proximal Cu-Zn massive sulfide deposits located. within the Noranda Cauldron which occurs within the core of the Noranda Volcanic Complex. The deposit is located at the top of the Havrian Formation, the lowermost formation of the 3000 m thick Mine Sequence; the deposit has Yielded 2.75 M tonnes of ore grading 3% Cu, 0.96% Zn, 2.06 g/t Ag and 1.0 g/t Au. The multi-lens Corbet deposit formed within a 250 m wide crater that occurs within a localized breccia pile. The Corbet breccia pile was constructed by explosive magmatic and hydrovolcanic eruptions localized along the south flank of a larger andesitic shield volcano that formed during the waning stages of Havrian volcanism. The breccia footwall of the deposit allowed unfocused and widespread hydrothermal discharge that resulted in the development of a large area of chlorite and fringing sericite alteration that exceeds, by six times, the size of the sulfide lenses and represents a significant exploration target.

Smelting reduction as an ironmaking technology for the 21st century has been challenging the traditional blast furnace. The process has many attractive advantages over the blast furnace, however, the massive by-produced coal gas mainly containing CO, H2 and CO2 requires further treatment. From a chemical engineering view, coal gas is a valuable chemical stock and can be transformed into hydrogen-rich synthesis gas. Hydrogen can be directly used as clean fuel and synthesis gas can be used for the production of some important chemicals such as methanol, ammonia and dimethyl ether. Among those chemicals, dimethyl ether as an alternative clean fuel for diesel engine and liquefied petroleum gas has been drawing more attention. It has excellent environmentally-benign behaviours not only in compression ignition combustion, but also in the much lower emission of SOx and NOx. In this work, a combined technology of smelt reduction ironmaking and direct synthesis of dimethyl ether, which will strongly promote the energy efficiency, environmental protection and resource recovery, is proposed and described in detail.

Different authors and publications indicate that Optibar Segmented Intercell Bars cause a remarkable distortion in the distribution of the current in a cell group. However, these results were based in inaccurate computer based models and do not represent the technology. During the last trimester of 2010, a 92 cells circuit from Barrick Zaldívar EW plant was implemented with Optibar Segmented Intercell Bars. The technology was incorporated progressively without disrupting the plant production. Depending on operational conditions, this led to a 2 to 4% current efficiency increase and 3 to 5% specific energy consumption reduction. By October 2011, 40,000 tons of copper will be produced with the technology.

By achieving production within 10 years and funding Twin?s share of development and construction costs, Kennecott earns further 4% ! If no election to develop a mine within 2 years of feasibility study completion, Twin may present development proposal which Kennecott has 60 days to elect to follow or transfer management to Twin and dilute to 49% !
